No one is born with the ability to tell stories, but everyone has one to share. The capacity to communicate through storytelling, poetry and other forms is a skill that may be acquired, refined, and elevated to the level of an art. The majority of us actually have some creativity, albeit it is frequently muted or overlooked because of external factors or other pressing needs. The creative writing courses in the Philippines, being offered by various institutions, provide a window through which we can let our thoughts and emotions out.

List of best creative writing courses in the Philippines

Each of us has gone through a range of feelings and has encountered our own set of difficulties. Through lovely expressions and words, creative writing expresses these feelings and emotions. But creative writing is more than just using words and jargon, it is the ability to come up with characters and plots, and be able to place both against a realistic backdrop. Writing using captivating language and judicious use of numerous literary tropes are skills that only experienced creative writers possess.

What is Creative Writing?

Any writing that goes beyond the traditional norms of professional, journalistic, academic, or technical forms of literature is considered creative writing. This writing is typically characterized by an emphasis on narrative craft, character development, the use of literary tropes, or different poetic traditions.

Benefits of Creative Writing Courses in the Philippines

·    Building confidence

Writing creatively is a technique that will enable you to fully develop your unique voice and perspective without artificial constraints. You have more freedom to research and voice your opinions on subjects, points of view, philosophies, people, etc. Additionally, doing so will give you more confidence and ease when expressing your viewpoints in other writings.

·    Clarification of Thoughts

You may express your thoughts and emotions more clearly through creative writing. You’ll be able to see things clearly in the workplace and throughout the rest of your life, enabling you to solve challenges in the future.

·    Meeting with Like-Minded people

When one meets other writers, one can pick up different methods and approaches. Meeting like-minded individuals also facilitates the exchange of fresh viewpoints and thoughts on the same subject. While some dissertation writing services allow students to readily express their ideas on paper, others find it difficult or unpleasant to write these essays due to laziness or a lack of writing ability.

·    Improvement in Vocabulary

Writing promotes vocabulary and gives insight into reading and writing processes. Additionally, you will have a thorough understanding of grammar and how to use it in your compositions. Therefore, after being aware of the methods used by an essay writing service, a person will likewise be able to bend and break the laws.

·    Boosting the Imagination

By thinking beyond the box while writing, a person can engage and enhance their creativity. Becoming more adept at identifying alternatives and solutions to challenges, also aids in igniting his imagination.

Eligibility Criteria for Creative Writing Courses in the Philippines

It’s a common misconception that you don’t need a degree in creative writing to be a writer, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. For those who are passionate about writing, a creative writing degree is a blessing—not because of the worth of the degree once you’ve earned it, but rather because of the lessons you acquire while doing the course.

A creative writing degree allows you three years to concentrate on your writing, refine your style, and explore the intricacies of this craft. It entails being exposed to a world of excellent reading, which will influence both your artistic vision and your complete worldview.

A creative writing degree is therefore worthwhile if you are serious about improving the caliber of your work. The courses, whether taken at the bachelor’s or master’s level, are meant to give students the necessary skills in their chosen specialty to prepare them for the industry’s high demand and rapid growth.

Higher secondary education, or 10+2, with humanities or the arts as the primary discipline, is required to enroll in a bachelor’s program in Creative Writing Courses in the Philippines. You must possess a bachelor’s degree in the relevant discipline to meet the normal requirements to enroll in master’s level courses at universities overseas. Your advantage will increase if you have a fine arts bachelor’s degree.

How to Improve Your Writing Skills

Many people find writing to be scary, especially those who don’t write often or for a living. The good news is that writing doesn’t have to be painful, and almost anyone can develop their writing skills with a little discipline and openness to learning. Here are four ways you may immediately start honing your writing abilities.

  • Writing: Just like anything else, writing requires practice if you want to improve. Regular writing will help you build a distinct style and lessen your dread of the blank page if you want to improve your writing abilities. Therefore, keep writing even if no one reads it. A man becomes flawless through practice.
  • Reading: The best writers are avid readers and reading regularly is a simple approach to start improving your writing abilities. Read more difficult material than you usually do, and pay close attention to the sentence structure, word choice, and overall flow of the writing.
  • Research: Aside from copying someone else’s work, not doing your homework will quickly damage your credibility. Therefore, be sure to conduct enough study on your subject.
  • Journaling: Keeping a journal is a good approach to increasing your sensitivity to your surroundings. Making it a daily habit to write about anything will help you improve your writing. It encourages gathering ideas and introspection, two skills that are essential for creative authors. Additionally, it will boost your self-assurance.

Storywriting School is a learning community for people who dream of writing great stories... but end up getting stuck.

Sounds familiar? If that's anything like you, then you‘ve visited the right website. We're here to give you the tools to get your story written. Yes, you could see that story idea through, even if it's been lying dormant in your brain cells for over a decade now.

You're not one of those naturally-gifted writers you say? We aren't, either. But we've come up with storywriting methods that have, through the years, helped demolish many a writer's block. We believe that while some people might have the inherent knack for writing stories, the rest of us can still learn it—and with practice, create great stories that uplift our readers.

Get unstuck. Write now.

What are your offerings?

We have 16 online courses that are open to students around the world. We have also held writing workshops and courses in Metro Manila, Philippines, and in other places we're invited to.

What kind of people attend your courses?

We get all kinds: artists, accountants, students, teachers, film geeks, freelance writers, parents, producers, etc. The common ground is that they love stories. Our participants are often avid readers who appreciate a good narrative and therefore want to write their own as well.

Many parents have asked us if we welcome children in our courses. We answer with a resounding, "yes!" Kids as young as eight have thrived in our courses and have even done better than adults. It's likely because they haven't developed bad habits that grown ups have to unlearn. That said, please ask your child if he/she really wants to learn to write stories. Storywriting should be an enjoyable activity—not something you feel forced to do!

Note: For our online courses, s tudents aged 8-12 are required to have a parent or guardian assisting the child in going through coursework.

Who created Storywriting School and its courses?

Joachim Emilio B. Antonio is a teacher by profession, a writer on occasion, a scholar by passion, and a writing teacher by vocation. He received his M.A. in Humanities with Specialization in History from the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P), his Ph.D. in Creative Writing from the University of the Philippines, Diliman (UP), and is currently teaching graduate students at UA&P.

Joem has won eight Don Carlos Palanca Awards for plays and short stories. He was also recognized as Best Playwright in Short + Sweet Manila 2014 for his entry, Death in Ten Minutes . His plays have been staged in different high schools and universities, as well as in international theatre festivals. Abridgments of his plays, The Floret Road and exesanonymous.com , were staged at the awards nights of the 66th and 67th Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards. One of his plays, The Dust In Your Place, was adapted into film and became a finalist at Cinemalaya 2021.

He also has a number of published children's books, namely Ang Ampalaya sa Pinggan ni Peepo and Sa Tapat ng Tindahan ni Mang Teban under Lampara Books, and Narding Carpio and the Monstrous Wall under Vibal Group's Chikiting Books. In 2020, Nestlé's NIDO printed three stories he wrote for the brand: Let's Make Pancakes!, Let's Play Outside!, and Let's Eat Lunch!

Joem's writing workshops are distinct from both the “great-writers” approach (which relies on the teacher heavily criticizing the students’ work) and the “therapeutic” approach (which focuses merely on proliferation). He believes in “writing by design,” wherein the writer is trained to anticipate and predict a reader’s probable response to the text based on the writer’s understanding of reality and language. The goal of his workshop is for the student writer to gain the ability to put ideas into paper and to see how the choice and organization of language fulfills the writer’s objective.

Creative Writing

Creative writing, as a subject, primarily deals with the principles and techniques used in writing non-technical forms of literature such as poems, novels, and essays.

Applications

Writing poetry is one of the main forms of creative writing. In taking creative writing classes, you’ll typically be taught the different types of poetry (those that tell stories, those that chronicle complicated adventures, those that explore the poet’s thoughts), standard poetry structures (how many lines should be in each stanza, how many syllables should be at each line, at which part should rhymes be introduced), and the different ways poetry can be used including how to tackle important social issues.

Screenplays

Screenplays contain the dialogues that actors in a movie are required to deliver as well as other miscellaneous instructions that they are required to follow while performing a scene. When making screenplays, students are typically taught how to come up with ideas for a story, how to introduce characters, how to build up tension, and how to effectively end it. Also included are guidelines on how to write acting instructions on the script, factors that need to be considered when working on a script such as budget and time, and how to ensure that your script will sell once it’s done.

Songwriting

People typically see songwriting as something that comes naturally — the result of a sudden stroke of genius that eventually leads to bestselling albums and sold-out concerts. In reality, songwriters typically follow a predetermined process (writing the song, copyrighting it, submitting it to music distributors, promoting it across media platforms) when writing songs. These, as well as industry standards that songwriters are expected to live up to, are some of the things that you may learn in a creative writing class.

Offered by the Faculty of Arts and Letters – Department of Literature

Description.

Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing is a four-year program that is designed to nurture and guide aspiring student writers in the four major genres: poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and drama. It will also teach them to write in the special forms of creative writing, like writing for children and young adults, scriptwriting for film and television, speculative fiction, literary journalism, travel writing, food writing, nature writing, and even literary translation. The creative writing classes consist of both lecture sessions, in which literary models (professional examples in the different types and forms of creative writing) will be analyzed, highlighting the effectiveness of their literary techniques and rhetorical strategies; and workshop sessions, in which the creative writing drafts of the students will be critiqued by the professor and their peers. The program also has a strong literature component which will expose students to literature subjects, like Philippine Literary History, The Great Books, Anglo-American Literature, Latin American Literature, etc., that will help them improve their own writing craft, The final intended learning outcome of the entire program is the production of a creative writing thesis in the form of a book-length manuscript of a collection of poems, short stories, CNF pieces, or plays.

Building a ‘culture worth fighting for’ after Oct. 7, one writing workshop at a time

“Writing on the Wall” is a new creative writing community founded to ‘make something of our desolation’ following the Hamas attack

It was the cans of tuna that author Gila Green hoarded in her safe room that finally unlocked her case of writer’s block after the trauma of Oct. 7.

Green took part in a workshop earlier this month that is part of “Writing on the Wall,” an online community aimed at producing art that reflects the complexities of Jewish and Israeli life at this time.

The workshop led by Bar-Ilan University English professor William Kolbrener and novelist and Ph.D. student Ronit Eitan was titled “Haven’t the Jewish People Suffered Enough” — how humor “transforms tragedy into laughter.”

Humor, Kolbrener told attendees, “is a long Jewish tradition. That’s how Jews deal with tragedy.”

The workshop began with a reading, a selection from a David Foster Wallace essay in Rolling Stone about life in Bloomington, Ill. after 9/11. A summary that does not do the selection justice: Everyone had American flags up, Wallace wanted one, too, but the stores were sold out. A sympathetic convenience store owner saw his distress and gave him construction paper and markers to draw his own flag.

The writing prompt was to take an ordinary object and use it to say something personal, and something related to Oct. 7. Attendees were given 15 minutes to write, and those who wished read their work aloud.

A woman based in New York wrote about the hostage posters and her response to their defacement – she had never shouted at a stranger before, she said.

Objects collected in safe rooms – water bottles, cans of tuna – took center stage.

After Green read her piece on collecting canned tuna fish, some of which she gave to her daughter who was living in a building without a safe room, one response was that it showed her love for her daughter.

“This insight was valuable and unexpected,” Green told Jewish Insider . “Perhaps, unknowingly, I have been more worried about her than I was willing to express.”

After Oct. 7, Kolbrener, who was academic director of the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy, recounted that the idea of publishing another paper on antisemitism did not feel sufficient to him: “I thought, ‘the house is burning down.’”

Kolbrener, who has taught English literature and creative writing at Bar-Ilan University for nearly 30 years, led “an impromptu writing workshop” on Oct. 17, for students who would not be able to return to classes for over two months.

“Writers were on fire,” Kolbrener later wrote about that workshop. “Their stories: a grad student home with four young children, her husband ‘somewhere’ in Gaza; a writer, her son-in-law, identifying the still burning bodies of Kibbutz Beeri; the undergrad who stayed home from the [Nova] rave, but whose friend did not. But they found words, and images – to transmute the horror into art.”

Kolbrener and Eitan were then inspired to start Writing on the Wall, which has held a series of workshops and publishes essays, poems and visual art on its website .

The idea, Kolbrener wrote, is “to make something of our desolation, of that day ,” citing precedents in Jewish history: “The desolation caused by the sin of the Golden Calf led to the second tablets, and human creativity. The destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem led to the creation at Yavne of the Oral Law, the beginning of the Mishnah and Talmud and Midrash, the inspired poetry of the rabbis.”

Kolbrener wanted to create “a different kind of community,” a post-Oct. 7 creative outlet.

“I live very close to Mt. Herzl, the military cemetery [in Jerusalem],” he recalled. “At the beginning of the war, there were funerals, day after day…thousands of people came and there was absolute quiet and silence… You felt the resilience of mourning.”

Yet Kolbrener and Eitan felt that they could not remain silent.

Eitan compared the situation to the Eurovision Song Contest, in which Israeli singer Eden Golan’s first submission, “October Rain,” was rejected on the grounds that it was too political, so she had to sing a neutered version of the song, “Hurricane.” After that, Golan was bullied by other participants and forced to stay in her room while she wasn’t performing due to security concerns.

“We cannot take ourselves out of the game,” Eitan said. “Even if we’re booed, we need to be there. It’s a metaphor. We cannot be silent; we cannot be afraid; we need our voices out there.”

Doing so is “really urgent,” Kolbrener said. “We cannot fight on the front, but we can build a culture that is worth saving, worth fighting for.”

Kolbrener, who is religious and lives in Jerusalem, and Eitan, who is secular and lives in Tel Aviv, highlighted the importance of sharing different voices at this time.

Eitan said that she “didn’t see [herself] as a collective, but I have no choice. I was pushed into that. I had to reconstruct my identity, everything I thought I was after Oct. 7. The rules have changed.”

“This is an opportunity for us to find our voices again. We’re very different,” she added.

Kolbrener said that “no matter how bad it seems in the newspapers in terms of internal rifts, when you walk in the streets you feel 100% unity.”

Still, he said: “We don’t want false unity – that’s dangerous… We are a growing community of people who may not share the same lifestyle or values, but notwithstanding our differences, we all have what to say about this experience.”

Green told Jewish Insider after the workshop that she came into it with the idea that it would help her “regulate and cope with difficult times” as someone who often uses writing to process thoughts and feelings.

“Since Oct. 7, I’ve found myself unable to write,” she lamented. “It might simply be because we are still living through these events. It’s ongoing and there isn’t enough psychological space to write about it yet. Just when you start to process the chaos…something else hits you hard. The pace and enormity of it all can be overwhelming.”

Erica Landis, who began writing professionally after the death of her son in a swimming pool accident, said that “writing has always been how I process my experience in the world… I had no trouble pouring my heart out in my own personal horror.”

Oct. 7, however, “was a bigger horror.” Landis found herself “distracted in a way I’d never experienced before… I found myself having trouble concentrating on my work. It all felt frivolous… I felt that coping mechanism has been taken away from me. I was unable to put this all into words… I was truly afraid I’d never be able to write again.”

Landis said she felt she “simply had to” sign up for the workshop.

“I was hoping for and expecting some ‘writerly tricks,’ I guess, on how to break down the million moving parts of this pain and anger,” she said, “but I think so far I’ve learned that there are no tricks.”

Still, Landis appreciated that the workshop was about the craft of writing, leaving the participants to work through their emotions themselves before putting them on the page.

Green said she was “pleasantly surprised” to be able to write something during the session, and that it was a “significant step forward” for her.

She found the piece about torn-down hostage posters resonant, despite living in Israel where the posters are mostly left intact.

“It’s reassuring to know that others are experiencing similar things and value writing as an outlet,” Green said.

Landis said that the experience “validated the difficulties I was having as a writer … that this is a pivotal horror.”

She was also “thankful to have this virtual room full of safe people (Jews or not) who don’t want to kill me,” Landis said.

“While Oct 7 hurts me down to my DNA, I am terrified of the fact that people – no matter their beliefs – are not horrified and angered by the pure evil and brutality. So, I guess the answer to how the workshop has helped me process is by validating the impossibility of Oct. 7 and the world response not making sense. And from there, we will do our best to bear witness … by recording it all the best we can. Breaking it all down into writing exercises that may spur an idea, a connection, or simply a sentence is very helpful,” Landis said.

The Ancient Art of Calligraphy Is Having a Revival

Calligraphy, which means “beautiful writing” in Ancient Greek, is seeing a surge of interest from younger people who say it offers a meditative and creative escape.

For the first time in many years, a teacher was correcting my handwriting.

“Go more slowly,” Laura Edralin, a calligraphy teacher in London, told me, as she walked around a table of beginners on a recent Wednesday night, explaining how to achieve even, flowing strokes.

As a breaking news reporter for The New York Times, I am not used to being told to slow down, nor am I accustomed to writing by hand. But both those new to the medium and seasoned calligraphers say the deliberate, steady nature of the practice is a huge part of its appeal — one that is on the upswing. With so much digital fatigue, writing elegantly with pen and paper can be a joy.

Calligraphy, a centuries-old art form, is seeing a surge of interest, including among young people more familiar with coding than cursive. At Michael’s, the largest arts and crafts chain in North America, more than 10,000 customers signed up for lettering classes online between January 2023 and March 2024 — nearly three times more than in the same period a year ago, when about the same number of classes were offered.

An increase in calligraphy-related posts on social media and the popularity of online classes may have helped drive the trend. On TikTok, where users can find how-to videos or watch clips of experienced calligraphers at work, 63 percent more posts used #calligraphy in April 2024 than in April 2023, according to TikTok. And on Instagram, top calligraphy influencers such as Nhuan Dao in Ha Noi, Vietnam, and Paola Gallegos in Cusco, Peru, have 2 million or more followers apiece (on TikTok , Gallegos has 9 million).

Rajiv Surendra, a calligrapher and actor (best known as the math M.C. Kevin G. in the 2004 film “Mean Girls”), said he was surprised to find that his how-to calligraphy videos were some of the most popular posts on his YouTube channel; one video on calligraphy basics has garnered more than 840,000 views.

In this digital age, “we have come so far away from consciously thinking about how to form a ‘w’ — and how to form a beautiful ‘w,’” he said in a recent interview. For that reason, he explained, now more than ever, people are craving the ability to bring intention and care not just to what they write, but to how they write it.

He has seen this reflected in the response to his videos: A woman in Denmark recently told him, in a handwritten letter, that they had inspired her to start practicing calligraphy with her grandfather’s fountain pen.

“The beauty of the confident stroke” written in calligraphy in black ink. A hand on the right holds a pen at the end of the final stroke of the double quote.

Calligraphy dates back to before the 1st century A.D., said Dr. Chia-Ling Yang, a Chinese art history professor at the University of Edinburgh. By the 10th century, good brushwork had become known in China as a sign of good character . Separate traditions also developed with roots in other parts of East Asia and the Middle East.

In Europe, the introduction of the printing press in the mid-15th century paved the way for a distinction between handwriting and more stylized scripts. Calligraphy in Europe experienced a decline in the 19th century, with the advent of the typewriter, but it continued to be used for official documents and scholarly purposes. “What is the same in all practices of calligraphy, regardless of the language, is the beauty of the confident stroke,” Mr. Surendra said.

Today, part of calligraphy’s appeal is its accessibility: Anyone with a pen and paper can give it a go. Ms. Edralin, the London calligraphy teacher, took up the practice in 2017 as a way to cope with anxiety from a demanding job. Other than a few classes in high school, she had never really pursued art — certainly not professionally — but she lost herself in the beauty of crafting strokes into letters, and letters into words. “I could scratch the creative itch that I knew was in me, but it didn’t require me to sit at an easel for weeks on end,” she said.

Practicing calligraphy helped make Ms. Edralin aware of self-critical thoughts that had become ingrained in her internal dialogue. “If that’s happening day in and day out in everything you’re doing, it’s really hard to spot,” she said. Now, when she hears students criticizing themselves or wanting to give up halfway through a word, she encourages them to embrace imperfection and revel in the thrill of learning something new — lessons she hopes they can apply to other parts of their lives, she said.

Like Ms. Edralin, Amanda Reid, a calligrapher in Austin, Texas, began experimenting with calligraphy both as a creative outlet and as a way to ease stress — in her case, from a graduate degree she was pursuing in physical therapy. She started her own calligraphy business in 2019, taking commissions and teaching workshops, and it grew quickly during the coronavirus pandemic, when people were at home with time to learn new skills online, she said.

For Ms. Reid, crafting elegant words with her pens is not just an artistic practice, but a physical one, with a meditative rhythm of upstrokes and downstrokes. “Some people do yoga,” she said. “But I do calligraphy.”

Some preliminary studies suggest that working with your hands — whether by writing, knitting or drawing — can improve cognition and mood , and a study published in January by researchers in Norway found that writing by hand was beneficial for learning and engaged the brain more than typing on a keyboard. Some states, including California and New Hampshire , have begun reintroducing cursive (long regarded as obsolete in a digital age) into their curriculums, citing it as important for intellectual development.

The new emphasis on cursive comes even as researchers are developing products that will use artificial intelligence to replicate handwriting based on just a small sample of written material, Bloomberg reported .

Even with technological advances on the horizon, Ravi Jain, who attended the recent calligraphy class in London, said the beauty of calligraphy surpasses what any computer-generated letters could achieve. “Nothing will replace the amount of love, patience and time that goes into creating something by hand,” said Mr. Jain, 27, a data analyst at Credit Karma. “I know that the cards I give last a lot longer than a text message.”

The Rise of TikTok

News and Analysis

TikTok said that it was introducing new measures to limit the spread of videos from state-affiliated media accounts , including Russian and Chinese outlets, as the company deflects criticism that it could be used as a propaganda tool in a major election year.

An internal analysis found nearly twice as many pro-Trump posts as pro-Biden ones on TikTok since November, a sign of the right’s use of a liberal-friendly  platform.

In an attempt to rein in the amount of weight loss posts , TikTok said it will work to remove content about drugs like Ozempic, extended fasting and more from the “For You” feed.
