Have you ever considered what makes watching a movie so exciting? It's not just about the story; it's also about how it's presented to us. Let's explore the fascinating world of movie presentation! Imagine sitting in a cozy movie theater, popcorn in hand, waiting for the film to begin. But wait, what's that on the screen? It's not just the movie; it's the whole experience, the way the images, sounds, and colors come together to tell a story. Now, think about your favorite movie. What do you remember most about it? Was it the thrilling action scenes, the heartfelt moments, or maybe the unexpected plot twists? Whatever it is, chances are, the movie presentation played a big part in making it memorable. How can you elaborate on the exact idea of the movie presentation? Movie presentation refers to the art and technique of showcasing a film to an audience. It encompasses visual effects, sound design, and storytelling techniques. The intention is to improve the audience's cinematic experience by captivating and involving them.

Be that as it may, presentation is essential to success in the dynamic world of movie production . It's not merely about showcasing a film but weaving a compelling narrative that captivates audiences and stakeholders. Movie presentation transcends the screen, influencing perceptions and shaping the trajectory of projects and careers.

From the inception of cinema to the modern-day blockbusters, the art of presentation has played a pivotal role in the film industry's evolution. Short answer

What is a film pitch deck?

A film pitch deck is a concise, visually engaging presentation used by filmmakers to showcase their movie concept. It highlights key elements like storyline, characters, and visual style, aiming to persuade investors or studios to back the project.

Without a solid pitch deck, your project will never come to life

In the high-stakes world of film, a weak pitch deck is like a leak in a ship – it can sink your project before it even sets sail.

Imagine your groundbreaking movie idea getting lost in a sea of pitches because it lacked that compelling presentation. This isn't just disappointing; it's a missed opportunity in an industry where first impressions are everything.

But crafting a pitch deck that resonates deeply with producers, publishers, and investors is a fine art.

This post will equipping you with the tools to win. I’m here to help you craft a compelling screenwriting pitch deck that no producer could say no to.

Let’s get started!

What makes a successful film pitch deck?

A successful film pitch deck captivates with a clear storyline, compelling visuals, and a unique selling point. It should weave the film's vision, target audience, and potential market appeal, to persuade investors and producers of its commercial potential.

What does a film pitch deck include?

Crafting a movie pitch deck is an art form, blending storytelling with marketing to captivate potential backers. It's not just about listing elements; it's about weaving a narrative that showcases your film's potential.

10 critical film pitch deck slides:

Title slide: This is your first impression. Feature your film's name and logo prominently, setting the stage for what follows.

Synopsis: Your story's heart. Offer a concise, compelling summary of your film's plot, capturing its essence in a few gripping sentences.

Moodboard: Visual storytelling at its finest. Use images or collages to convey the film's tone and aesthetic, giving a taste of the visual experience.

Main characters: The soul of your film. Provide detailed descriptions and visuals of key characters, making them memorable and relatable.

Setting/Location: More than a backdrop. Showcase visuals and descriptions of main settings, highlighting how they contribute to the story's mood and narrative.

Key scenes: Your script's highlights. Present pivotal moments or sequences that are crucial to the story, demonstrating the emotional or dramatic peaks.

Target audience: Know your viewers. Clearly define who the film is for and its appeal, backing it up with market analysis to show its potential reach and impact.

Budget breakdown: Transparency builds trust. Offer a clear overview of estimated costs, showing you've thoughtfully considered the financial aspect of bringing your vision to life.

Market analysis: Show your business acumen. Include data on potential audience size, competitors, and distribution opportunities, proving your film's market viability.

Team overview: The driving force. Introduce key members behind the film, highlighting their roles, experience, and contributions to the project's credibility and potential success.

Each element of your pitch deck should tell a part of your film's story, from the creative vision to the practicalities of production and marketing.

Remember, a successful pitch deck for movies is more than a collection of slides; it's a compelling narrative that brings your film to life for potential investors and collaborators. To have an easier time, perhaps consider a screenwriting software to write a screenplay before working on your film pitch deck.

How to create a film pitch deck?

Embarking on the journey of creating a film pitch deck is much like directing a movie itself. It requires a blend of creativity, strategic storytelling, and a keen understanding of your audience.

This guide is designed to walk you through the process step by step, helping you craft a movie pitch deck that not only showcases your unique vision but also resonates deeply with those who have the power to turn your cinematic dreams into reality.

Here's how to create your deck:

1) Dive deep into your project

Before anything else, immerse yourself completely in your project. Understand every nuance of your story, from the overarching themes to the minute details of your characters and settings.

This depth of knowledge will lend authenticity and richness to your pitch, making it more compelling.

2) Conduct thorough research

Begin with extensive research. Look into similar films or shows, market trends, and audience preferences. This step is crucial not just for understanding your competition but also for identifying gaps your project can fill, and trends it can capitalize on.

3) Craft a compelling logline

Your logline is the heart of your pitch. It should be a concise and catchy sentence that sums up the essence of your story. Think of it as the hook that will grab your audience's attention.

For example, for a thriller, your logline might be, "A retired detective is drawn back into the game when a serial killer he once chased resurfaces, leaving clues only he can decipher."

4) Create a narrative flow

Your pitch deck should narratively unfold like your film would. Start by setting the scene, introduce the main characters, outline the conflict, and give a sense of the journey and resolution.

This flow helps your audience visualize the film and connect with its story.

A useful strategy is to draw inspiration from existing movies. For example, if your film is a blend of genres or styles, you might describe it as "The whimsical charm of 'Amélie' meets the gripping suspense of 'Inception'."

This kind of comparison can quickly give investors a clear idea of the unique visual and thematic blend you're aiming for.

Here's our recommended pitch deck storyline:

5) Choose visuals that tell a story

When selecting visuals for your pitch deck, think of them as an extension of your storytelling. They should not only be aesthetically pleasing but also convey the mood, style, and essence of your film.

"The key thing is to be creative and offer an engaging visual presentation for industry insiders to consider.

If you have too much information (too much text), you're going to lose them. Focus on the broad strokes. Paint a picture of the story you want to tell, and showcase how you intend on telling it."

—Ken Miyamoto, Screenwriter and former Sony Studios liaison

6) Demonstrate commercial viability

A market analysis is vital to show you understand your audience and the market. Discuss audience demographics, compare with similar successful projects, and outline potential distribution channels and marketing strategies.

Here's a great example of a marketing and distribution plan slide:

Marketing and distribution plan slide

7) Be transparent about the budget

A detailed budget breakdown shows you're realistic and prepared. Include production costs, media and entertainment software , distribution, and any other significant expenses. This transparency is key to building investor confidence.

8) Showcase your team

Highlight the strengths of your team. Detail their previous successes and relevant experiences to build credibility. Your team's track record can be a significant factor in securing investment.

Here's an example of a team slide:

Team slide example

9) Address potential risks

Acknowledge and address potential risks in your project. This could include budget overruns, production delays, or market changes. Show that you have thought about these risks and have plans to mitigate them. This level of foresight can significantly enhance investor confidence.

10) Tailor your pitch to different audiences

When it comes to pitching your film, one size does not fit all. Different investors and producers have varied interests and priorities, and understanding these nuances can make or break your pitch.

Here’s how to tailor your pitch:

Studio executives: Focus on marketability, potential for return on investment, and audience appeal. Highlight aspects like genre trends, potential for sequels, or merchandising.

Independent investors: Emphasize the creative aspects, unique storytelling elements, and artistic vision. Discuss how your project stands out creatively in the current market.

Equity investors: Concentrate on the financial returns. Provide detailed market analysis, expected revenue streams, and a clear exit strategy.

Producers: Align your pitch with their past projects and interests. Show how your project fits into their portfolio and meets their artistic and commercial goals.

11) Conclude with a call to action

A compelling conclusion is as crucial as the opening of your pitch deck. It's the final act that leaves a lasting impression and prompts action from your audience.

Whether it's setting up a meeting, reviewing a script, or considering investment, your CTA should be direct and easy to follow. Use decisive language and make it clear what the next steps are and how they can be taken.

Consider embedding your calendar directly into your pitch deck. This innovative approach allows potential investors or collaborators to see your availability and schedule a meeting with you instantly.

Here's an example of a CTA slide:

CTA slide example

How to design a film pitch deck?

Designing a pitch deck for a movie is like setting the stage for your film's narrative, where each slide is a crucial scene in its own right.

This section will guide you through the essential elements of designing a movie pitch deck that not only showcases your vision but also connects with your audience on a personal and professional level.

Here’s how to do it:

1) Embrace scrollytelling

Scrollytelling , a method of storytelling that combines scrolling with multimedia elements, can be a game-changer for your screenplay pitch deck. This approach allows you to create a narrative journey, guiding the viewer through your story in a dynamic and interactive way.

Use this technique to unfold your story as the viewer scrolls, integrating images, text, and other elements that bring your film to life.

Here's an example of scrollytelling:

Film pitch deck scrollytelling example

2) Create personalized slides

Address specific investors, producers, or studio executives by name and customize content to reflect their interests or past projects. This level of personalization shows that you've done your homework and are serious about your proposal.

3) Maintain visual consistency

Maintain a consistent visual theme throughout your deck. This includes using a uniform color scheme, typography, and layout style. Consistency in design not only looks professional but also helps in creating a cohesive visual story.

You can also use custom designs that echo the tone, style, and color palette of your film. For instance, if your film is a noir thriller, use a dark, moody color scheme and imagery that reflects the genre's aesthetic.

4) Add engaging visuals

Your visuals should do more than just look good; they should speak. Use high-quality images, concept art, or stills that give a glimpse into your film’s world. These visuals should be powerful enough to convey the mood and tone of your film without needing much explanation.

Here's a great example of a visually engaging deck:

Wednesday TV series pitch deck

5) Include interactive elements

Consider incorporating interactive elements like clickable links or embedded videos. These features can provide a deeper insight into your film, such as showing a teaser trailer, director’s statement, or behind-the-scenes content.

6) Tell a story through data

If your pitch includes market analysis or budget breakdowns, present this data in a storytelling format. Use infographics, charts, and graphs that are easy to understand and visually appealing. This approach makes complex information digestible and engaging.

Visual presentation inspiration from movie title sequences

presentation about movie

As a presentation designer, I am constantly on the lookout for inspiration and new ways of thinking visually. A good presentation should certainly be many things, chief among them: eye-catching, and compelling. One way we can achieve this is with interesting graphics and visuals. The right visuals actually add to what we’re trying to say and help the viewer enjoy and understand the narrative rather than just sit through it.

One of my favourite forms of ‘presentation’ is movies. Okay, that might be a stretch! But I’m talking specifically about the title credits of a movie. Title credits prepare the audience for what’s about to come in the film, they sometimes even reflect the plot of the story. Typography, photography, sound, collage and countless other methods have all been used to open up a film.

Just like movies, presentations have to have powerful openings. In fact we think this is so important, we  regularly give a masterclass on how to do it well . There are lots of lessons we can learn from great movie title sequences about creating great presentation openings, and there’s no better master of the art than  Mr. Saul Bass . In this post I’m indulging in two of my favourite things, talking about the important role Saul Bass played in the development of the movie title sequence as an art form, and playing with fun design in PowerPoint.

Who is Saul Bass?

Saul Bass was an American graphic designer and movie producer/director, born in New York in 1920. His graphic design style was heavily influenced by Swiss Typography , Russian Constructivism , and the Bauhaus movement , all of which were based on a design ethic of bold colours, simple geometric shapes and form, silhouettes and efficiency.

DeStijl

The early years of the movie title sequence

Before Saul Bass came on the scene, the opening credits of films looked and acted very differently. They mainly consisted of simple black and white chalk boards listing the cast and crew. These were sometimes accompanied by static background imagery and illustrations. There were no animations, and no real thought given to the idea of setting up the premise of a film.

Here are some examples of what title credits looked like in the 1920’s, 30’s and early 40’s, predominantly from ‘silent’ movies.

Early Screens

Saul Bass had different ideas. He said:

‘‘For the average audience, the credits tell them there’s only three minutes left to eat popcorn. I take this ‘dead’ period and try to do more than simply get rid of names that filmgoers aren’t interested in. I aim to set up the audience for what’s coming; make them expectant ’’

Now, title sequences can be like music videos in terms of scope and scale. To illustrate this point, let’s look at the work of two notable directors with whom Bass collaborated.

Alfred Hitchcock

Alfred Hitchcock was a master of suspense and the psychological thriller genre; arguably one of the most iconic directors of all time. Hitchcock’s M.O. in terms of ‘presenting’ to an audience-was always abstract form and imagery – which is probably why he worked so well alongside Saul Bass. A presentation can really benefit from strong, bold colours and – particularly – photography. Adding a flood fill photograph into the background of a slide can really give it that wow factor – it brings a presentation to life. Bass used these little tricks to great effect in his sequences for Hitchcock, blending film and still photography together seamlessly.

Vertigo (1958)

The first title sequence here, is that of  Vertigo : a  dream-like thriller set in San Francisco, about a private detective who falls for a beautiful, suicidal woman he is hired to trail. In this sequence the shapes in the titles relate to the human eye and the workings of the inner mind. The hypnotic spirals create a dizzying sensation, representing the main characters’ loss of control, and subsequent vertigo later in the film.

Vertigo

Now do it in PowerPoint!

This is a simple one to recreate in PowerPoint. Start with a dark slide background – you can change the colour of the slide background by right clicking on a slide and selecting Format Background . Then select a stock image which matches the vibe of the original title sequence. Increase the transparency of the image in the Picture Format tab so it will better blend into the scene and make any title text more readable.

Next add your text. Adjust the text spacing to smaller than usual to represent the feeling of the retro movie titles. You can do this with BrightCarbon’s free PowerPoint design and productivity add-in BrightSlide . Select the text, right click and then select Live Character Spacing .

When you’re happy with the text style, right click again and choose Format Shape , then Text Options . Remove the fill and add the text outline.

presentation about movie

Animation-wise, it’s pretty simple. I added a Fade and slow motion path to the background image and then a Zoom animation to the text.

Psycho (1961)

The next sequence is from  Psycho  – maybe Bass’ most famous title sequence. The film is about a schizophrenic- killer with a split personality, who dresses in the guise of his mother, in order to lure young women into his motel. In the title sequence the narrative is reflected by the grey horizontal and vertical lines shooting across the screen, which become jagged and juxtaposed.

Psycho

To imitate the Psycho title card, we’re going to create a glitch-like effect in PowerPoint. First, select a dark background colour, not true black but something very close to imitate the old analogue feel.

You can use websites like WhatTheFont to search for fonts, similar to, for example, the one used in titles of Psycho. Then adjust the spacing again with BrightSlide to get the style you want.

Add a rectangle in the middle of each of your rows of text. Before doing all the next steps, copy the rectangles you’re created – we’ll need them soon! Then select the text and shapes on your slide and navigate to the Shape Format tab.

presentation about movie

Under Merge Shapes , choose Fragment . Next, delete everything outside of the text. Your text is now sliced into three rows. Group each of the three rows together – this will be your base for animation.

You already can create some cool-looking glitch effects with what you have.

presentation about movie

But, if you want to animate, paste the rectangles you copied before and make sure they are in the same place. Drag the shapes so they are the same width as the slide, and create a pattern like in the original titles.

presentation about movie

Add a Fly In animation to one half of the text groups, as well as to the stripes. Adjust the delay of the animation to create movement variety. Watch the original sequence to see how variety adds impact. Then add a F ly I n effect to the rest of the text and set it to enter form the opposite side. Animate the lines to Fly Out with it, and don’t forget the variety! Use the Start After Previous setting to make animations play one after another. That might all sound a bit complicated so check out the finished product to see how everything works together!

Martin Scorsese

Scorsese has filmed some of the most iconic movies of the last four decades, and is famous for his tough, gritty crime dramas and thrillers. For Scorsese’s title sequences, Bass used bold typography, imagery, and sound.

Goodfellas (1990)

Goodfellas  is a film about the violent, turbulent life of three members of the mafia across two generations. In this title sequence, the narrative is reflected by a simple black background with white upper case credits hurtling across the screen at a rapid rate. The titles are short, sharp and frantic – which reflects the dangerous and glamorous gangster lifestyle the characters are involved in.

GoodFellas

Casino (1995)

Casino  is another Mafia film, but this time focuses on the glitzy casinos of Las Vegas. This narrative is reflected by photography and computer animation. The exciting title sequence shows the main character being blown up by a car bomb and hurtling through a vivid fireball. This then blends into the vibrant lights of the Las Vegas strip. Phew!

Casino

Bass’ Legacy

Bass’s work has a huge influence on modern design. Here are two of my favourite examples of modern day title sequences that have been heavily influenced by Bass.

Catch Me If You Can (2002)

Catch Me If You Can  is a crime caper directed by Steven Spielberg, about an FBI detective pursuing a con artist across the world. The title sequence uses bold colours and simple imagery. It depicts the detective chasing the suspect across the globe in various locations.

CatchMe

Se7en (1995)

The final sequence is from David Fincher’s psychological thriller  Se7en , about a two police officers hunting a sadistic serial killer who murders his victims through the use of the seven deadly sins. The narrative is reflected in these titles through the use of jittering photography and montage – showing the killer preparing his demented notebooks. The type and credits animate in a sinister way, magnifying the underlying feeling of discomfort.

Se7en

There’s a few PowerPoint tricks we can use to recreate this look and feel – mostly animation and experimentation. Here’s a quick guide. Once again, start with a dark background a font that stands out.

presentation about movie

Select the text box, then go to Format Shape and choose Text Options . You’ll see there are all sort of extra effects like glow and transparency. Unfortunately, we can’t animate all those parameters, but all we need is a quick flash.

Copy and paste your text box a few times and add some of these effects. We have a few with different transparencies and one with the glow effect. Then make them flash onto the screen with the help of simple Appear/Disappear animations. I also found that the Flash Bold animation effect (for text) works really well here, so I added it on top. Experimentation is the name of the game here!

presentation about movie

Then, for the final touch I added a stock film tape image again with Appear/Disappear animations.

Bass’ visionary work in title credits not only affected generations of filmmakers, but also generations of designers. From a personal point of view, Saul Bass has been a huge influence on my design and I’ve created several pieces over the years that reflect his approach, including this piece that I created for a Horror festival back in 2007.

Horrorposters1_Blogimages

There is a wealth of knowledge to be mined from these title sequences, particularly in relation to presentations and how we set up our audience. Without the exploits of innovators like Bass, the art of presentation would not be what it is today. If you want some inspiration for your next visual presentation, check out the work of Mr. Bass himself. Oh, and you now have an excuse to re-watch all your favourite movies!

‘Wicked’ Movie Gets Big Push at NBCU Upfront as Donna Langley Takes Over the Show

NBCUniversal showed major love for its film division, primarily the highly anticipated Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-led “ Wicked ,” during its 2024 upfront presentation Monday in New York.

While not the traditional venue for touting upcoming movies — as this week is all about wooing Madison Avenue to shell out big bucks for prime ad placement on TV — with film chief-turned-overall content boss Donna Langley on stage for her first upfront, the move was a natural moment for synergy.

Langley teed up a new trailer for “Wicked,” a treat just for those attending the presentation at Radio City Music Hall, and promised it will drop wide later this week.

Popular on Variety

NBC will air “Wicked” behind-the-scenes special “Defying Gravity: The Curtain Rises on Wicked” on Nov. 25 ahead of the Nov. 27 release of the film. The special will then be available for streaming on Peacock. Langley also boasted about the “Wicked” tie-ins coming to NBCU’s Paris Olympics coverage this summer.

“That kind of creative spirit of taking big swings to create stories that can evoke memories is what animates the spectacular movie event that will anchor our holiday season,” Langley, who was elevated from head of the Universal film unit to leader of NBCUniversal Studio Group last June , said. “Over the past few decades, [‘Wicked’] has become a rite of passage for so many families to have found, not just entertainment, but powerful empowerment in this wonderful story. The journey of ‘Wicked’ actually began at Universal 20 years ago. The property was workshopped there and developed on its way to the Broadway stage. Since then, the stage production has gone on to garner more than $5 billion in ticket sales and has been seen by more than 63 million people worldwide.”

The NBCU upfront kicked off with an orchestra playing the familiar Peacock chimes, followed by a handful of memorable NBC series theme songs — and Universal movies “Jurassic Park,” “Back to the Future” and “ET,” further showing that Langley influence.

Other highlights from the Radio City Music Hall event included flashy musical performances from Little Big Town and NBCU daytime staple Kelly Clarkson, who brought the house down as the closing act, and a standup set from “Late Night” host Seth Meyers.

Fallon’s opener led into NBCU chairman Mark Lazarus, who gave the high-level corporate pitch: “This week, you’re going to hear a lot of familiar buzz words: ‘premium content, reach scale, engagement and innovation’ to just to name a few. And we can talk about all those things as well. We can do all of that. And while others may be able to deliver on us one or two of those, NBCUniversal is the only company that has it all — requiring zero compromises from you, our clients and partners. And while others have been spinning, we’ve spent the last year investing, investing in our content in the technology that powers our platforms, and in the overall experience for our customers and our advertisers.”

Next up, Langley appeared on stage to tout the company’s “unique ability to bring stories forward and, by doing that, giving voice to visionary artists that have something to say… The most talented visionary creators continue to show that with the right tools and the support from this company and our platforms, it can literally do anything.”

NBCU content chief Langley then introduced Kevin Hart, who is the executive producer and one of the stars behind Peacock’s upcoming series “Fight Night.” Hart took a moment to thank Langley for her support. “Donna is responsible for a lot of my early success,” he said. “I’m very appreciative of not only what she’s done, which is where she is now. I’m proud of you.”

Last week, NBC announced a fall 2024 schedule that includes three new series, including the medical drama “Brilliant Minds,” starring Zachary Quinto; “St. Denis Medical”; and the sitcom “Happy’s Place,” starring Reba McEntire.

NBC News boss Cesar Conde and “NBC Nightly News” anchor Lester Holt also took the stage, followed by Snoop Dogg, who showed up to drop some news: That he will join next season of “The Voice” as a coach — along with fellow newcomer Michael Bublé.

Later during the presentation, “Saturday Night Live” stars Kenan Thompson, Heidi Gardner and Bowen Yang touted the upcoming 50th season of the franchise. Thompson was joined by Hart to discuss the Paris Olympics, as well as NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico.

“Watch What Happens Live” host Andy Cohen noted that he’s about to celebrate the 15th anniversary of his talker, and he was joined by “The Traitors” host Alan Cumming — who teased that a cast announcement for Season 3 was forthcoming.

Setting up clips for their new series at the upfronts were “St. Denis Medical” star Wendi McLendon-Covey and “Long Bright River” star Amanda Seyfried, among other stars.

Ad sales chief Mark Marshall took the stage toward the end to promote the Peacock company’s offering, noting that the “biggest surprise” for him out of the presentation was that he himself has been renewed for Season 2 — a quip about his second year leading the sales force at upfronts .

Wait, Why Were There So Many Movies At The TV Upfronts This Year?

When Emma Stone, star of Disney ’s Cruella and Searchlight’s Poor Things , introduced CEO Bob Iger at the company’s Upfronts presentation this week – the first time that the former TV chief had been on stage at the advertising rodeo in 30 years – it was clear that this is no longer just a TV event.

“To say a lot has changed since 1994 would be an incredible understatement and I’m not just talking about the color of my hair, or my fashion choices,” Iger said.

Netflix Upfront: Here’s What Happened At Pier 59 With Shonda Rhimes, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, George Kittle, Mindy Kaling & Kate Hudson

Amazon upfront: here’s what happened at pier 36 with jake gyllenhaal, will ferrell, reese witherspoon, alan ritchson & octavia spencer.

It marked a sea change for the Madison Avenue set, who were previously treated to a cavalcade of television stars promoting the small-screen, usually fresh from the broadcast pilot process. Unlike April’s CinemaCon, which plugs movies to theater owners, or July’s ComicCon, which entices fans, the Upfronts present movies as properties well-suited to automakers and pharmaceutical companies. The streaming wars over the past five years have revealed movies to be valuable subscriber lures and, as the industry embraces ads in streaming, marquee properties for brands.

In many cases now, advertisers buy positions ahead of theatrical launch and extending through streaming, a possibility in today’s marketplace due to tighter release windows.

But what’s clear is that film is invading one of the last moments for television to shine. The golden age of television highlighted that many of the most-talented writers wanted to work on the small screen. But despite this, television has always been somewhat in the shadows of the movie world, despite paying the bills for the biggest entertainment studios.

The shift was noticeable at the very start of the week when Donna Langley, Chief Content Officer at NBCUniversal , who recently took over the television production operations on top of running the film studio, prioritized Wicked , the Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande holiday tentpole, during her presentation.

“While the industry faces continual changes and real challenges, I would like to build on NBCUniversal ’s storied legacy to lead a unified strategy across film, TV and streaming,” she declared.

When reading out some of the more memorable film and TV quotes, Langley used a movie line that summed up the situation for television. “Houston, we have a problem,” she said.

The new approach was most evident when it came to the streamers – Amazon and Netflix – presenting live and in-person at the Upfronts for the first time.

Amazon kicked off with an appearance from Gyllenhaal to announce a sequel to his recent Road House reboot. “The original was a classic, so many people love that film, including me and all of us had such big shoes to fill. I love this character, I love this world and I can’t wait to bring more Dalton,” he said.

Amazon MGM Studios boss Jen Salke made plenty of television news – a new Tomb Raider series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge , a Nic Cage-starring Spider-Man noir live-action series , renewals for Cross , Mr. & Mrs. Smith and The Boys – but the biggest yuks of the day came from an appearance by Witherspoon and Ferrell, who were there to promote You’re Cordially Invited.

“As the rom-com king, I was able to give Reese a couple of pointers that really improved her on-screen performance,” said Ferrell. “That’s really sweet. I don’t like to talk about myself like this, but I’m kind of known for my rom-coms and you aren’t,” added Witherspoon. “I’m the f*cking queen of looking cute while sleeping [in movies].”

Witherspoon did pull double duty at the Amazon event, where she concluded Salke’s presentation with the news, revealed by Deadline, that the streamer was making a prequel to her Legally Blonde movie.

“Welcome to the next hundred years of Amazon MGM Studios,” added Salke, nodding to the century-old MGM, which the tech giant swallowed up for $8.45B in 2022. “Only Amazon has the ability to dive into IP and spark new obsessions across books, podcasts, music, fashion, and games. No other studio offers creators so many ways to engage with an audience. And this has made Amazon MGM Studios the home for talent.”

But even many of Amazon’s hot television projects are themselves based on movies. Noir, Tomb Raider, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Elle are all based on films.

Similarly, Netflix made movie news with a sequel to classic Adam Sandler golf comedy Happy Gilmore, Keira Knightley starring in a feature adaptation of The Woman in Cabin 10 and a new film from Kathryn Bigelow.

Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria talked up series such as Bridgerton , which launched its third season this week, as well as a new Kevin Williamson drama and a Tim McGraw bull riding series , but again it was Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz who stole the small stage at Pier 59 Studios to promote their new film Back In Action.

presentation about movie

Bajaria also gave a shout out to its upcoming Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F movie with Eddie Murphy. “It’s true to the original and it reminds you why this is one of Eddie’s most iconic roles,” she said.

Warner Bros. Discovery , led by former reality TV stalwart David Zaslav, similarly leaned in to its movie studio.

“We opened the door to greater exploration of what we can do together to launch our high-profile films,” she said, highlighting films such as Wonka, The Color Purple, Dune 2 and Furiosa.

The timing on the latter was interesting, given that it was almost at the same time that the George Miller movie was having its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival . The film festival has overlapped with the Upfronts before but it was noticeable that Furiosa’s world premiere on the Croisette unfolding just hours after the tubthumping in New York.

“As we look ahead to the future, we are so thrilled with the opportunities that await our brand partners on some of our biggest new releases: Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Minecraft and Superman ,” Nussbaum added.

Even Fox , a network that no longer has a sister movie studio, had a movie to promote. Yes, it was primarily there to promote series such as Grimsburg, Animal Control, The Floor, Rescue: Hi-Surf, Doc and Beat Shazam (with the first appearance from Jamie Foxx), as well as Tom Brady’s introduction to its sports team.

But it also found time to mention a new Tubi original movie – The QB Bad Boy and Me starring Resident Evil’s Siena Agudong and influencer Noah Beck, who literally couldn’t keep his shirt on.

“The Upfronts have clearly changed,” one TV boss told Deadline. Clearly.

The 77th Cannes Film Festival draws to a close Saturday with the presentation of its top award, the Palme d’Or, along with an honorary tribute for George Lucas.

The closing ceremony is set to begin at 6:45 p.m. local time, 12:45 p.m. U.S. Eastern time. It will be streamed live on Brut internationally and air on France 2 within France.

Any of the 22 films that premiered in competition at Cannes are eligible for the Palme d’Or and other prizes, like the Grand Prix, best actress and best actor. Deciding them all will be the nine-person jury presided over, this year, by Greta Gerwig .

The jury’s deliberations take place in secret, so anything could potentially win. But a handful of films are seen as the most likely contenders, among them Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine As Light,” Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” and Sean Baker’s “Anora.”

“The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” about an Iranian family living through the country’s 2022 protests, was shot clandestinely in Iran and includes real videos from the demonstrations. Just ahead of its Cannes debut, Rasoulof, facing an eight-year prison sentence , fled Iran. He arrived in Cannes several days ago and, on the red carpet, held up photographs of two of his actors, Soheila Golestani and Missagh Zareh.

Grace VanderWaal, from left, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, director Francis Ford Coppola, and Romy Mars pose for photographers upon arrival at the premiere of the film 'Megalopolis' at the 77th international film festival, Cannes, southern France, Thursday, May 16, 2024. (Photo by Scott A Garfitt/Invision/AP)

“All We Imagine As Light,” the first Indian film in competition in Cannes in 30 years, is about two nurses who forge a bond in modern Mumbai. It’s Kapadia’s second feature, following the documentary “A Night of Knowing Nothing.”

“Anora,” by the American filmmaker of “The Florida Project,” is about a Brooklyn sex worker who marries the son of a wealthy Russian oligarch, provoking a farcical rush to annul the marriage. The film’s star, Mikey Madison, gives one of the most widely hailed performances of the festival.

Other much talked about entries include the sci-fi epic “Megalopolis” from Francis Ford Coppola , a two-time winner of the Palme d’Or; Coralie Fargeat’s gory body-horror satire “The Substance,” starring Demi Moore ; and Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez,” a Spanish-language musical about a Mexican drug lord who transitions to a woman. Audiard previously won the Palme for 2015’s “Dheepan.”

During the brief awards ceremony, Lucas will be given an honorary Palme d’Or. During the festival, Cannes gave the same tribute to Meryl Streep and the Japanese anime factory Studio Ghibli .

Following the awards, the winner of the Palme will be screened for the audience in the Grand Théâtre Lumière.

The Disney Advertising Upfront, Bob Iger

If there were any lingering doubts that the Walt Disney Co. is now comfortable leaning into the edgier aspects of its increasingly aligned portfolio, they evaporated about 10 minutes into Tuesday’s upfront presentation when Ryan Reynolds promised that eventual Disney+ library member Deadpool & Wolverine would be a boon to advertisers targeting “testicular trauma” and “cocaine content.”

Related Stories

Jimmy kimmel set to moderate conversation with joe biden and barack obama next month, 'tv's top 5': the upfronts wrap-up edition.

“I think we’re incredibly fortunate to have a captain like Bob Iger at the helm of the Walt Disney Co., ensuring that the magical essence of imagination and storytelling are at the heart of everything,” Stone said to screams of approval from the corner of the room apparently occupied by the Disney contingent.

“Today, we’re going to share the incredible projects that we’re working on,” added Iger, “and then later Jimmy Kimmel will be out to tear them all apart. I think he’ll probably be tearing me apart, too.”

Iger’s brief spiel focused on that storytelling — though he acknowledged the “radical changes that have transformed the business,” including their “whole business model.” But he was most memorable in noting what a rare sight it was to see him up there. His decision to grace the Javits Center stage broke Iger’s decades-long stint of sticking it to the upfront audience. His last time speaking for media buyers, he noted, was in 1994 — when he was the president of a pre-Disney-owned ABC.

Let’s not gloss over that bit about the runtime, though. The Disney presentation was an absolute marathon — with probably a few more trailers than necessary. That’s apparently just what happens when you’re selling Hulu, Disney+, ABC, FX, ESPN and several other platforms that selectively diverge and converge depending on one’s streaming or cable subscriptions.

What seemed to play well were the spots for Disney+ entries from Marvel ( Agatha All Along ) and Lucasfilm ( The Acolyte ). There was also a lot of apparent affection for the teaser of season four of Only Murders in the Building , as the upfront audience carries a torch for Steve Martin and Martin Short more than, say, Kardashian. The breakout, however, might have been upcoming FX dark comedy Dying for Sex . A trailer for the Liz Meriwether miniseries starring Michelle Willians and Jenny Slate quickly won over the crowd.

Having Williams on hand to introduce it didn’t hurt, either. The presentation was most keyed in when it ceded the stage to actors. Where the presentation lagged was during protracted sports segments. Getting Jason Kelce on the roster of Monday Night Football talent and in-house to sell the coming season? More than worth the stage time. Bragging about ABC and ESPN hosting the Super Bowl telecast in … 2027 ? Not so much.

The SummerDocs series includes a diverse selection of engaging and socially relevant documentaries: 'Skywalkers: A Love Story' follows a daredevil couple as they take their relationship to terrifying new heights in a wild scheme to climb the world's last great skyscraper and perform a death-defying stunt on its spire; "War Game' imagines a nation-wide insurrection, set on January 6, 2025, in which members of the US military defect to support the losing Presidential candidate, while the winning candidate and his advisors war game the crisis in the White House situation room; and 'Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story' tells the story of Reeve's astonishing rise from unknown actor to iconic movie star, including his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman, before being injured in a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down, but catalyzed his activism for disability rights.

"The SummerDocs documentary showcase, a highlight of the Hamptons summer season, offers three uniquely powerful stories to stimulate conversation about the important challenges of our times: social media and internet stardom, America's political divide, and the relentless spirit of humanity when faced with a seemingly insurmountable challenge," said HamptonsFilm Executive Director Anne Chaisson.

Tickets for the 2024 SummerDocs Series individual screenings are now available for purchase for HamptonsFilm members at the HamptonsFilm website, with public sales beginning May 28.

HamptonsFilm also announced the return of the free Outdoor Screening Series, featuring a lineup of classic crowd pleasers presented Wednesday evenings throughout the summer at East Hampton's Herrick Park and Main Beach. Films screenings this season include 'Jurassic Park' (July 17), 'Singin' In The Rain' (July 24), 'Moana' (July 31), 'The Neverending Story' (August 7), and 'Jaws' (August 21).

Additional HamptonsFilm summer programming includes Film Camps for students ages 8-15, taking place July 8-12 in East Hampton at the HamptonsFilm offices; and July 15-19 in Southampton with partner Southampton Arts Center. Both Film Camp sessions are supported in part by the Luca Rizzo Fund. As we reported earlier, the annual Hamptons International Film Festival will take place from October 4-14, 2024, as an expanded 11-day event.
