Pakistan is a country in which you would find a variety of historical places that signify the unique traditions and culture of the country. These places are of extraordinary significance for people interested in history, at the same time they may act as an attraction for tourists. The tourism industry of Pakistan flourishes because of the existence of beautiful historical sites in the country.

Some of the most significant historical places in the country include Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro and Taxila. Harappa is situated approximately 200 km from Lahore in the Montgomery District of Punjab. It is the place of the historic Indus Valley Civilization settlement which is as old as 5000 years and is a civilization which the modern day people almost forgot about. A beautifully designed civilization which was discovered in 1920 has all elements of a modern day arrangement of a city. It had an exceptional sewerage system, drinking water wells and a high quality waste disposal system. The Harappans were agrarian people and experts believe they had a system of government for the distribution of the wealth of food.

Mohenjo-Daro was discovered in 1922 and is one of the oldest and most built up urban civilizations of the world. It is located on the west bank of the Indus River and it is a tiny proportion of the Indus river civilization of Harappa. Experts believe that the city was one of the most important in the Indus Valley Civilization and would have held majority of the trade courses and strength of the Southern Indus Plain between 2600 and 1900 BCE. One might find it difficult to find any palaces or monuments in the area but the city is well known for having historical pieces of gold beads, lapis, carnelian and ivory. All the houses in the city had areas for bathing and water wells were located in multiple spots all across the city. It had the most amazing drainage system and many of the modern day civilizations use the model of Mohenjo-Daro’s drainage system to build new ones.

Taxila is another place which holds much significance when talking about the historical places of Pakistan. It is located 30 km North West of the Rawalpindi city and it is considered to be one of the most significant historical locations in Asia. The city is known for prospering culturally and economically from the 1st to 5 th century AD. The city comprises of a variety of buildings, settlements and castles. It also used to be the capital of the Budhist Kingdom so tourists might come across multiple Budha monuments in the city.

The three sites mentioned above are historical sites of utmost importance, but there are other historical sites in the country which attract tourists from all over the world such as the Takhti Bahi and the mausoleum of Jahangir, the Mughal emperor.

The historical significance of various sites of Pakistan is the country’s unique selling point when it comes to the tourism industry. With a country marred by terrorist attacks finds it difficult to attract tourists, these sites act as a pulling force for archeologists who are willing to risk their lives to view the most extraordinary sites in the world.

Historical place essay for 9th & 10th class.

Historical places reflect the culture and the past history of any country. Historical places consider the beauty of any country. These places provide us knowledge and recreation. We can learn the ritual of any country through its historical places. In each country there must be several historical places likewise there are several places in our country. I saw many from them but one of the best tour was, when we I went to Jahangir Tomb along with my classmates.

It was a great memory when I was in second year and exams were just going to start. We all were known that this is the time when we will go alone and rarely will meet again. That is why we arranged to go to Jahangir’s Tomb. It was very pleasant day. We were thirty in number. We had great food with us. We gathered early in the morning and started our journey to Jahangir’s Tomb. The time we passed in the bus was the most pleasant time. We did much fun in the bus by singing songs and dancing in two team’s competition.  Finally we bought tickets and entered in the Tomb. Jahangir’s Tomb is very splendid building. It was made of white and red marble. The tomb was surrounded by four bid grounds. It was too big that it still reminds us the glory of the Mughals. We walked here and there and saw each aspect of Tomb with much interest. It was showing the mirror of Mughal’s ritual’s and rites. At the end we sat in the ground and take lunch.

Cool breezing was blowing. The sky was filled with clouds. Soon it began to rain. The drain over-flowed. There was water everywhere. We had a hearty bath. The children floated papers boats. It stopped raining after two hours and Sun began shining which fill every dark place with its light. Flowers were spreading their smell everywhere which was making the weather more beautiful. After this we went to Ravi River and enjoy boating there. We were much tired. We got bath in the evening. It was the happiest day of my life because my dearest friends were with me. We all were happy and enjoyed too much. I can never forget those happy moments.

Recently our school organized an educational trip to the Taj Mahal, Agra. The Taj Mahal is the most beautiful monument built in the Mughal period. It is one of the wonders of the world. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

This gateway of Taj Mahal is built with the use of Red Sandstone. There is a beautiful garden that begins at the main gateway and ends at the base of the monument. The building is made of pure white marble. It took twenty thousand workmen and twenty years to build. The monument is built on the bank of the river Yamuna.  It was the most beautiful building I had ever seen.

Last Sunday, we went to the Red Fort by a specially hired bus. Along the entrance two rows of shops selling various objects of art besides selling handicrafts. During the Mughal times, this was known as Meena Bazaar. After crossing the lawn, we reached the historic building known as ‘Naubat Khana’. Then we saw ‘Diwan-e-Aam’ or the Hall of Public Audience.

Then we went to the ’Rang Mahal’ which was a place of pleasures and richly inlaid with precious stones in the Mughal period. There is a ‘Khas Mahal’ beside the Rang Mahal. It has a beautiful marble screen. The Red Fort also has the War Memorial Museum where weapons used in the First World War are exhibited. We got to see many historical things that we read in our books. We enjoyed the trip very much.

My dream came true when last month our history teacher arranged a trip to Agra for us. It was 24 October when we reached there. That very afternoon we went to see the famous Taj Mahal. It is a masterpiece of architecture-all in marble. We admired the four more mosques with tall slender minarets and the huge central dome. The surroundings lend beauty to it. The mausoleum stands in the center of a big garden with marble water channels, rows of fountains, and stately cypress trees.

The tombs of Shah Jahan and his wife lie beneath the dome. We went to see the Agra Fort too. When Shah Jahan was confined there, he spent his time gazing at the mausoleum of his creation from his prison window. We saw things that we had read about in our books-the Dewan-i-Am, the Diwan-i-Khas, the Pearl Mosque, and the Shish Mahal. A visit to a place of historical importance does make history real and interesting. It was a wonderful trip.

A visit to a historical place is very educative. It instructs as well as entertains us. I am fond of visiting historical buildings. Last year, I went to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. In the evening, we went to see the Taj Mahal. I had heard a lot about the beauty of the Taj Mahal. But reality surpassed the descriptions that had been given to me.

It is a wonder in marble, a specimen of Mughal art. Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan in the sweet memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It was built about three hundred and fifty years ago.  It stands on the right bank of the river Yamuna. The gateway which is made of red stone is very beautiful. The garden is very lovely. The tall dark cypress trees, smooth green lawns, and the beds of flowers are pleasing to the eyes. The fountains flow here and there.

The main building is made of white marble. It stands on a raised platform. At its four corners, there are four stately towers. Inside the tomb, Emperor Shah Jahan and his beloved Mumtaz Mahal lie buried side by side. This monument tells us about the expertise of the artists and craftsmen of that era. The visit to the Taj Mahal was a wonderful experience for us. It was both enjoyable and educational.

Write a note on the Accession of States and Tribal Areas to Pakistan.

  A large number of princely states were situated between Pakistan and India. Most of the states took their decisions. However, no decision could be made about the fate of Jammu & Kashmir, Junagadh, and Manawadar states.

Junagadh and Manawadar States:

          The rule of Junagadh and Manawadar announced their accession to Pakistan, but India occupied them through military action.

State of Hyderabad Deccan:

           Nizam, the ruler of the State of Hyderabad Deccan decided not to join either of the two countries. He intended to give his state an independent status, but the Indian Army attacked Hyderabad Deccan and forcefully incorporated Hyderabad Deccan into India.

           The majority of the people in Hyderabad Deccan, Junagadh, and Manawadar were non-Muslims but a vast majority of the people of Jammu and Kashmir were Muslims.

State of Jammu and Kashmir:

         A vast majority of the people of Jammu and Kashmir were Muslims. They wanted accession to Pakistan but because of Hindu Raja’s understanding with the Indian rulers, Indian Forces invaded the Kashmir Valley. The people of Kashmir started their fight for freedom. The Indian Army tried to crush the wishes of the people but after meeting with failure in their attempts.

Three wars on Kashmir Issue:

          The two countries have fought three wars (1948, 1965, and 1971) so far but the people's right to self-determination is being ignored. The Kashmir issue could not be settled according to the principles of justice.

A Politician of Principle:

        Quaid-e-Azam (Rahmatullah) was a politician of principle. He joined only those states with Pakistan which acceded to Pakistan with their free will. The states of Bahawalpur, Khairpur, Kharan, and Makran were among those who consented to Pakistan.

Independence of Tribal Areas:

         Quaid-e-Azam (Rahmatullah) announced that tribal areas would continue to enjoy full freedom and their independence and freedom would be looked after. The tribal areas were independent and free under British rule too. When the tribal leaders, maintaining their independence and freedom, declared their accession to Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam (Rahmatullah) declared brave tribal people defenders of the northwestern borders of Pakistan.

Describe the Salient Features of the Constitution of 1956.

Formulation of Constitution:

Geographical factors of Pakistan caused a delay in the formulation of the constitution. The country was divided into two unequal parts. East Pakistan was one unit. It had more population than West Pakistan. West Pakistan consisted of four provinces and twelve states. Therefore, the Government dissolved all the provinces and states and merged them into a single province.

Formation of a new Province:

On 14 th October 1955, a new province of West Pakistan came into being. It was composed of 12 divisions. The federation consisted of East Pakistan and West Pakistan. This cleared the hindrances which were being experienced in the way of representation.

First Government of West Pakistan:

Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani was made the first Governor of West Pakistan.

First Chief Minister of West Pakistan:

Dr. Khan Sahib was the first Chief Minister of this province.

One Unit of West Pakistan:

This unit continued till 1970. After the establishment of one unit of West Pakistan, the task of the formulation of the constitution became easier to a great extent.

Formulation of the Constitution:

The first constituent Assembly had already done a lot in this connection. Chaudhary Muhammad Ali availed of the work already done and formulated a formula in which the second constituent Assembly consisting of all the political groups and provinces expressed their consensus.

Promulgation of the first constitution:

The draft of the new constitution was presented in the Assembly on 9 th January 1956. After the final approval by the Governor-General, it was promulgated in the country as the first constitution of Pakistan on 23 March 1956. The salient features of this constitution are as under:

Salient Features of the Constitution of 1956:

1. Written Constitution:

The Constitution of 1956 was a written constitution. It was not a detailed constitution. The Constitution of 1956 consisted of 234 articles, which were divided into 13 parts and 6 schedules. The Objective Resolution was included in the Constitution as a preamble:

2. Flexible Constitution:

This constitution was flexible. It had the flexibility to bring changes according to the changing circumstances. The constitution could only be amended through a process requiring the amendment to be passed by at least a two-thirds majority of the National assembly and authentication by the President.

3. Federal Constitution:

The constitution provided for a federal system in the country. The Federation consisted of two provinces i.e. West Pakistan and East Pakistan. Powers were divided between the center and the provinces. The subjects were divided into three lists; The Federal List, The Provincial List, and the Concurrent list. Both, the Central and Provincial governments had the jurisdiction of legislation regarding the concurrent list. The provinces were given autonomy to a great extent.

4. Parliamentary System:

The Constitution of 1956 provided for a parliamentary form of government. The president was the head of state and the Prime Minister the head of government. The President had nominal powers. The real powers rested with the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister was authorized to appoint his cabinet but he and his cabinet were answerable for their policies and actions before the National Assembly. The President was to be elected by the members of both the National and Provincial Assemblies.

5. Unicameral Legislature:

Under this Constitution, the unicameral legislature was introduced. The only house of parliament, the National Assembly, was to consist of 300 members, 150 members each from West Pakistan and East Pakistan. Ten seats were reserved for women, five for each wing. The Assembly was elected for a tenure of five years.

6. Independence of Judiciary:

The independence of the judiciary was guaranteed in this Constitution. Supreme Court shall be the highest court. Two high courts, one in each province, shall be established. The Chief Justice of Pakistan shall be appointed by the President, and the other judges shall be appointed by the President after consultation with the Chief Justice. The Judges shall have the security of their services. A judge could be removed only by the President after an address by the National Assembly, two-thirds of the members concurring.

7. Single Citizenship:

The citizens of Pakistan shall have only single citizenship. All the citizens shall be called Pakistanis. In America, the people enjoy dual citizenship i.e. one citizenship of the Central Government and the other of the Governments of the states whereas, in Pakistan, the Constitution established the principle of single citizenship.

8. Fundamental Rights:

The citizens shall have all the rights as are guaranteed in the Charter of the United Nations. All citizens shall be equal before the law. They shall enjoy social, political, and economic rights. The rights of the citizens shall have judicial protection. In case of violation of these rights, the victim shall be free to go to court.

9. Official Languages:

Under the Constitution of 1956, Urdu and Bengali were both accepted as state languages, while English was to remain the official language for the first 25 years.

10. Constitutional Institutions:

Under this Constitution, various constitutional institutions were established. Among these institutions, Islamic Research Institute, Public Service Commission, Chief Election Commissioner, and auditor General are worth-mentioning. All these institutions were authorized to work in their respective scopes.

Narrate causes of Martial Law 1958

   Ayub Khan Era 1958-1969:

         Martial Law 1958:

  General Muhammad Ayub Khan deposed Iskander Mirza in October 1958. He imposed Martial Law and justified his actions on some grounds. Some important causes of this Martial Law are given below:

  • Political Conflict:

After the establishment of Pakistan, conflict of power gave birth to grouping in the Muslim League. Governor-General Ghulam Muhammad took advantage of this conflict and dissolved Assembly twice. Thus, political conflict paved the way for the first Martial Law in the country.

  • Poor Economic Conditions:

Political instability and poor economic situation were prevailing in the country. Despite being an agricultural country, the country experienced a food shortage. The economic situation was so poor that in some areas famine-like situations arose.

  • Lack of Political Leadership:

Pakistan lost capable political leadership after the deaths of Quaid-e-Azam (Rahmatullah) Liaquat Ali khan and Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy and such people got control of the country and could neither build national unity among people nor solve the problems of the people.

  • Smuggling and Nepotism:

Some other causes of Martial Law included smuggling, black marketing, nepotism, and obtainment of undue privileges. No one was mere to solve the problems of the people. The middle class was living a miserable life. The system of the entire country was plunged into chaos.

  • Role of Bureaucracy:

Bureaucracy manifested the most irresponsible attitude and played its role In failing democracy in the country. Being influential, lust for power was born in their hearts which caused the imposition of Martial Law.

  • Ayub’s Khan Politics:

Politicians were involved inputting legs of each other. So, there was political instability in the country. In these circumstances, Governor-General Ghulam Muhammad included General Ayub Khan as Defence Minister in the cabinet. It created uncertainty.

  • Provincial Prejudices:

Thriving provincial prejudices also resulted in the imposition of Martial Law. Politicians, without caring for national security, instigated the public sentiments/

  • Political Instability:

Six cabinets were formed by two Governor-General from 1953 to 1958. Political instability and failure of the parliamentary system resulted in a political crisis. The people developed hatred towards politicians. They lost their trust in the democratic process that brought Martial Law.

  • Delay in Elections:

No General Elections were held in first eleven years of Pakistan. Elections were held only in the provinces one by one. After the Constitution of 1956 was passed, it was hoped that General Elections would be held within one year but it could not be done.

Election of Basic Democrats:

The Then President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Ayub Khan, under the system of Basic Democracies, conducted elections to elect 80,000 Basic Democrats in 1960 and got his Presidency confirmed by these members of Basic Democracies.

  The team of the members of Basic Democracies was going to expire in 1965. So, they were re-elected in November 1964.

Electoral College:

Under the Constitution of 1962, these members formed the Electoral College for the election of President, National, and Provincial Assemblies. Ayub Khan announced that Presidential elections would be held in January 1965.

Winner of Election:

According to public opinion, Ayub Khan won the election through indirect Methods of Election, manipulation, and rigging. So, the presidential Elections in 1965 were against the wishes of the people.

Effects of Elections 1965:

Criticism of Basic Democracies System:

  People began to criticize the Basic Democracies System introduced by Ayub Khan. It was openly said that no one could win elections against Ayub Khan in the prevailing system.

Rejection of the System:

Ayub Khan strangulated democracy. Therefore, the people rejected this system. This brought a tremendous decline in Ayub’s Khan popularity.

Coordination Campaign Against Ayub Khan:

The basic Democracies System proved an important factor of Ayub Khan’s downfall. All the political parties of the opposition blamed Ayub Khan for manipulation in these so-called Elections and launched a public coordination campaign for the restoration of democracy in the country.

Give a brief account of the causes of the Indo-Pak War 1965

  Indo-Pak War 1965:

India committed open aggression against Pakistan to materialize its expansionist intentions and attacked Pakistan on the night of 6 September. Although Pakistan had far fewer military and economic resources as compared to those of India, the Armed Forces of Pakistan, filled with the spirit of Jihad, forced an enemy many times bigger than it to face a humiliating defeat. A brief account of the causes of the September 1965 war that lasted for 17 days is given below:

  • India, intoxicated with power, started a war against China in 1962 and was defeated badly. Afterward, to remove this stigma, India tried to occupy the disputed territory of Rann of Kutch but had to face a total defeat. Thus, to restore its lost dignity, India started a war against Pakistan.

Estimated Expenditure for the plan:

It was estimated that Rs 23 billion was needed to achieve the objectives and targets of the Second Five Year Plan. It was estimated that Rs 12.4 billion would be spent on the public sector, Rs 3.8 billion in the semi-public sector, and Rs 6.8 billion in the private sector.

Economic Growth:

  Under this Plan, the pace of economic growth of the country remained quite satisfactory. In some sectors, a higher growth rate was witnessed as compared to the estimated rates.

Achievements:

          The points given below attract our attention when we analyze the plan.

  • National Gross Income exceeded even beyond 30 %
  • Exports were increased at a rate of 7 % per annum
  • In the industrial sector, more than 15 % of growth was recorded.
  • In the agriculture sector, more than 15 % of growth was recorded.

Importance of the Plan:

The Second Five Year Plan occupies special importance in the economic planning of the country because while preparing this Plan, the drawbacks of the First Five Year Plan were taken into account. So, the drawbacks were rectified and special care was taken in the evaluation of national resources. The success of this Plan proved a source of encouragement. It helped a lot in future planning.

Briefly describe the achievements and status of the 3 rd Five Year Plan

Achievements of the Plan:

The above-stated objectives and particulars show that the 3 rd Five Year Plan had a lot of merits when we analyze its growth, its synopsis is as under:

  • An increase of 9.5 % was expected in exports but only a 7 % increase could be possible.
  • The pace of growth in agriculture remained lower than the expected pace the target fixed was 4.5 %.
  • In the industrial sector, the target fixed was 13 % but only a 9 % increase could be made possible.

Feature of the plan:

 The Third Five Years Plan could not succeed fully. In most of the factors, it could not reach its pre-fixed targets.

Reason of Failure:

The 3 Five Year Plan was surrounded/ enveloped by unfavorable circumstances from the very beginning.

Severe Drought:

A severe drought was experienced during the first two years. It affected crops badly.

Indo Pak War 1965:

Defense expenditures increase because of Indo-Pak War in 1965. It causes a reduction in the proceeding resources for development expenditure.

The decrease in foreign aid:

  A decrease of 27 % was also noted in foreign aid. Agricultural output decreased too.

The rate of growth (%) in the Industrial and agricultural sector 1958-69

This table shows that during this period large-scale industries flourished while the rate of growth of small scales industries remained either stagnant or below the desired growth. The agriculture sector continued to suffer fluctuations continuously.

 Tenure of Ayub Khan:

                President General Muhammad Ayub Khan ruled for almost ten years.

              Many reforms were implemented during his Government. The country made much progress in the field of industry. According to the constitution, all the powers rested with the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Aggressive Movement:

              The people launched an aggressive movement against the rule of General Muhammad Ayub Khan and the situation seemed to be running out of his control. Keeping in view the situation, Martial Law was once more imposed in the country.

    Result of Elections 1970:

  Awami League, the party of Sheikh Mujeebur Rahman, won 167 out of 169 seats (including 7 seats for women) from East Pakistan in the General Elections of 1970. Noor-ul-Amin and Tridev Roy were the only two non-Awami League 4 candidates who won the election. From West Pakistan, the Pakistan Peoples Party of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto got a clear majority by winning 88 out of 144 seats (including 5 seats for women). The remaining seats were won by the other political parties. Conflict of power created a new situation in the country.

Describe the Separation of East Pakistan and the Emergence of Bangladesh.

Separation of East Pakistan:

  Sheikh Mujeebur Rahman mounted pressure to establish his government while Pakistan People’s Party opposed it strongly. General Muhammad Yahya Khan’s wish to cling to the government further worsened the situation.

Non-Cooperation Movement:

  In the meantime, Sheikh Mujeebur Rahman launched the Non-Cooperation Movement in state affairs. Blood shedding, non-cooperation, refusal to pay taxes, demonstration of strikes, a boycott of courts and not going of officials to their respective job places became the daily routine.

Appointed General Tikka Khan:

  General Tikka Khan was appointed Governor of East Pakistan to control the situation but the situation continued to deteriorate every day. In the meantime, Sheikh Mujeebur Rahman established a parallel government with the unlawful help of India.

Flag Hoisting:

On 23 March 1947 Sheikh Mujeebur Rahman hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh at his residence. Sheikh Mujeebur Rahman was arrested. This further worsened the situation. The civil war reached its peak.

No instant and effective operation could be done in East Pakistan because of the vast distance of land as well as disconnected air communication and non-cooperation of the local people. Consequently, our army had to surrender. Eventually, India succeeded in achieving its objectives and East Pakistan appeared on the map of the world under the name of Bangladesh on 16 th December 1971.

Historical hallmarks, distinct deeds of genius, accomplished achievements of people; admirable accomplishments of individuals, and cultivation of art collectively constitute the culture of a nation. Culture is the radiance that casts its luster on every sphere of life. It is the fiery fervor to enhance enlightenment.

Culture is the passion for sweetness and light, and the passion for making them prevail.

Pakistani culture, though replete with all these attractive attributes are outstandingly exceptional for its marvelous historical heritage The most startling and spectacular superiority of our culture is pleasurable of Muslim Architecture. And the historical places are the esteemed and exalted emblems of Muslim Culture in Pakistan.

A fortnight ago, my mates and I planned an entertaining excursion. We decided to explore the sheltered mystery of the historical places of Lahore. We finalized our program in a trice. First of all, we decided to visit the legendary tomb of Jahangir. We hired a taxi and reached the elegant tomb without any hitch.

The four magnificent minarets of the tomb presented a stunning sight. They looked like eagle-eyed guards to shield the terrific tomb. Lofty walls and an elegantly decorated big gate guarded the mausoleum of the great emperor. The tomb occupies the heart of a fragrant park.

The park was studded with blooming buds and fragrant flowers. Evenly spaced, thickly growing tall trees with big and lush green shoots (04) enriched the beauty of the place. The flowers” fluttering and dancing in the breeze” presented a spectacular sight. The fruit trees were blossoming.

The swaying twigs of trees, the leaves, the twittering birds, and the whistling wind created an impact of a sanctified place. Impressed by the “soft incense hanging upon the boughs” and “many incense-bearing trees.” l began to sing the beautiful verses of Keats:

Ah, happy, happy boughs that cannot shed Your leaves, nor ever bid the spring adieu

In front of the great tomb, a lovely fountain was spreading its light shower. The drizzling of hoary drops of the fountain produced ultimate excellence. Summing up in the words of S.T. Coleridge, it was

A savage place, holy and enchanted.

Soon afterward, we entered the majestic mausoleum of Mughal Art containing the grave of the emperor. What a life of luxury and abundance he had enjoyed, but now he was lying alone and deserted in the sheer calm of infinity.

Oh, threats of Hell and Hopes of paradise! One thing at least is certain-This Life flies.

The walls of the room were adorned with floral designs. There were curious colorful patterns signifying death. We offered “Fateha” and prayed to Allah to be Merciful and Beneficent to the departed soul. As a whole, the building is a marvelous specimen of Muslim architecture, and is matchless in its beauty and structure.

We came up to the top of the tomb and had a beautiful spectacle of Lahore from there. It was a startling scene. The balmy breeze, fluffy clouds floating in the firmament, the sun hiding behind a flimsy veil of clouds, and the prevailing aroma of the blooming flowers made the panorama so charismatic that it had a lasting impact on our memory.

Then we descended the stairs and sat under a huge shady tree in the park. We spent the rest of our time eating meals, drinking tea, and making some sketches of the floral designs we had just observed in the vast chamber of the tomb.

When the brightness of the day faded into the descending dusk, we hesitatingly headed home. Our minds were full of solemn thoughts. we were pondering over the mystery of death. We all agreed with Shakespeare;

In Nature’s infinite book of secrecy, a little I can read.

Last summer, my friends and I sketched out a programme to visit the historical places of Lahore. As we were to set forth from Multan in the scorching heat of summer, we decided to travel by an air-conditioned bus. We packed our luggage, hurried with hysterical haste to the bus station, got on the Bus eagerly at about 10 am and reached Lahore in the twilight. We rented a well-furnished room in a hotel and after a superbly delicious dinner, we enjoyed a deep sleep. Next dawn, we got up with much gusto. We decided to visit the tomb of Jahangir. Straightaway we were ready to start off. In a hired taxi, we reached the elegant tomb in half an hour. The four magnificent minarets of the tomb presented an exquisite view. A high wall and an elegantly decorated big gate guarded the mausoleum of the great emperor. The tomb occupies the heart of a fragrant park. The park was aromatically studded with colourful buds .and blooming flowers. The flowers “fluttering land dancing in the breeze” presented a spectacular sight. The fruit trees were blossoming. Birds perched on the twigs and boughs were twittering. Impressed by the “soft incense hanging upon the bough” and “many incense-bearing trees” I began to sing the beautiful verses of Keats:

“Ah, happy, happy boughs that cannot shed Your leaves, nor ever bid the spring adieu”

In front of the grand tomb, a lovely fountain was sprinkling its light shower. The drizzling of hoary drops of the fountain was producing the resonance of ultimate excellence.

We wished to visit some historical places because they are our cultural heritage. So, we chose Jahangir’s Tomb as our picnic point. We reached the tomb in the morning at 10. The weather was very pleasant.

The splendid building of the tomb was very impressive. There was greenery all around. A cool breeze was blowing. Birds were chirping in the trees. There were vast lawns, open spaces and flowers of different colours.

  Jahangir’s Tomb is the best place for a family picnic. There, we enjoyed ourselves very much. Everyone was taking interest in the remarkable structure of the building, matchless beauty of the lawns and historical significance of the Tomb.

At about 2 o’clock, we sat under a shady tree. My mother spread the table cloth on the ground and put our things on it.  Mother had prepared many tasty dishes. We took some meal and had some rest.

Then we played cricket in a grassy park. It was a source of great amusement. My elder brother told some interesting anecdotes. We sang together some national and film songs.

In the evening, we packed our belongings and our way home. Our hearts were saturated. It was a picnic of full enjoyment and recreation.

Last Sunday, we were each tired of our work and studies. My fellows planned that we should go for a fun and games to the River Ravi. But I suggested that we should go to some literal place like Jahangir’s tomb. There would be some uniqueness, fact and attraction. My fellows accepted my suggestion and we all got a hack and went to enjoy the fun and games.

Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard, are sweeter.

 In fact, Lahore is full of literal structures. Lahore itself is a literal megacity. Everybody who visits Lahore must go to visit literal structures. They show us the picture of the history and the achievements of our great fathers. I hadn’t seen the grave of Jahangir ahead. In no time we reached there. The grand grave of Jahangir was before our eyes. Everybody was happy to see it. It looked beautiful. I couldn’t believe as it was so grand.

The four altitudinous minarets of the tomb can be seen from a distance. The tomb is in a demesne enclosed by a high wall. The demesne appeared to be well-kept. The flowers were in all their seasonal beauty. There were numerous trees then and there spreading cool shade. A root in front of the grave was transferring forth a cool shower of water. It was presenting a beautiful scene. It filled our heart with pleasure. For some time, we were lost in studies. It looked another world. Cool breath was blowing.

After it, we reached the grave itself. It’s a large and beautiful structure. Great Mughal Emperor sleeps in an inner room. There was nothing to disturb him now. The room walls are full of peculiar and colored designs on them. The huge grave has a vast sundeck. In each corner a big minaret rises up to the sky. I went up and from the platform of the minaret saw the splendid megacity of Lahore. Man doesn’t believe in his eyes. Everything looked so seductive and so fascinating.

History is a cyclic poem written by Time upon the memories of man.

We visited each single part of the tomb. We sat in the grassy field for some time. At evening, when light began to fade. The silence and peace affected us strangely. Our minds were full of studies and various recollections. In the twilight it appeared to us as if we were in, a puck land. All beauty depicts an attractive scenery to us. We were much impressed by the scene. It was time to go back. We didn’t feel like coming back but we had to. We came back tired but happy.

Our school had already announced that we were going to see the Taj Mahal. We were elated and were wondering how thrilling, and exciting this experience would be. We had heard and read about it- there was a full chapter in our history book on Taj Mahal, but now we were about to see it for real.

Our principal and teachers had planned for all of us to visit the Taj Mahal on a full moon night. We were told that on the full moon night the monument looks even more glamorous and glorious, and it makes for a splendid spectacle. This added even more excitement to the previous announcement. We would have had to stay awake the whole night but so what? For such a wonderful experience, it was not a big deal.

We were asked to assemble on a Saturday afternoon at the school campus. We were instructed to carry our packed dinner-boxes and water bottles. We were strictly prohibited from buying any eatables there or littering the Taj Garden’s premises. We were warned against buying the souvenirs from the crafty hawkers. These instructions and warnings were repeated to us over and over again. First by our Principal, then by the respective teachers who were in charge of our groups into which we were divided.

We had brought consent from our parents in writing for this trip. From Delhi to Agra, we had to travel by bus, it was around a 5 hours journey. We assembled at the school campus at the given time, and were divided into groups. The teachers took charge of the respective groups, our teacher in charge asked us to stand in a queue, she called out our names from a list that she carried. The items each one of us was carrying were inspected, and then we went ahead to board the buses. 

As we started to move out of the school campus, we all hailed the school with three cheers in a chorus and the journey began. After about 5 hours we were told that we were at The Taj Mahal. The full moon was shining in the sky right above us. The premises seemed like it was filled with the milky hue. We left our buses at a little distance and stepped down. Again, our teachers called out our names from the lists, and we all stood in a straight line. We followed our teacher and walked towards the monument.

After a little while, we were at the main gate of The Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal glowed in the full moonlight in its grandeur. We all felt wonderstruck by the majesty, beauty, and opulence of the dome structure. The moonlit premises added elegance to the mystique. The Taj Mahal resembled a white swan standing still in a sprawling milk lake. The fountains on the campus were bubbling and bursting along the pathway. The fountains were flanked by the green lawns on either side. It was heavily crowded. Men, women, and children were trying to find a way for themselves. There were so many foreigners looking at the monument like they were totally wonderstruck.

We had to ramble to make it to the main platform, took off our shoes at the entrance, and were up on the main platform on which stood the great monument. The four minarets stood like sentinels on the four corners. After about two hours of wandering and rejoicing around the ‘Dream in Marble’, we came down to the lawns to open our dinner packets. Thereafter, it was time to begin our return journey.

A Visit to a Historical Place Short Essay

Last Sunday, I visited the Taj Mahal with my family. It was a dream come true for us to have visited the architectural marvel about which we have heard so much and had read so much in our books. We started feeling proud of our country to have this magnificent form of art.

Our history teacher asked us to assemble at a place and started explaining how the Mughal emperor Shahjahan got this monument built as a mausoleum for his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal. He had stated his desire to be buried by her side after his death. So, there were the two graves inside the mausoleum placed side by side.

We roamed around, kept adoring the astounding beauty, and were amazed at the artistry of the fine carvings. How gifted must those hands be which created that piece of art with so much artistry, we pondered. We looked at the Taj Mahal at one glance and in the second looked at the full moon in the sky. The Taj Mahal looked no less marvellous than the moon in the sky.

River Yamuna flows on the backside of this magnificent monument. It was as if the Yamuna was washing the feet of this marvellous wonder with a full sense of gratitude. For two hours, we went around this monument only rejoicing and wondering.

I visited the famed Prayag relic, Patalpuri Temple, one of the oldest remaining pre-Muslim buildings. Close to the arsenal's northern wall sits this shrine. It seems the fort was built to be erected far higher than the temple.

The Akshaya Var tree was again in my path as I continued walking. This tree's wish-fulfilling well is said to be a popular destination for folklore lovers. Akbar stopped it. The Mughal Governor's (Military Commander's) pavilion, however, was  most inviting with Beautiful pillars. They had impeccable taste.

The British decided to demolish a considerable portion of the fort to make place for a school, reducing its beauty. At present, the historic palace is now an arsenal.

Then I went back to Triveni for a swim. I lauded the Ganga's merits after my Allahabad Fort visit. Comparing the old and new forts at Allahabad, it is evident that the old fort at Allahabad is in ruins, while the new fort at Allahabad demonstrates neglect.

Describe a Trip to a Historical Site in Ten Lines

It may have been called a joy forever, but unfortunately in the materialistic world of today, even the beauty of the Taj Mahal is in danger because of the effluent Nitrous oxide and Sulphur dioxide being emitted by the Mathura refinery. Let us hope the scientists are able to find a fix and can save our Taj Mahal.
