Solved Examples on Percentage

The solved examples on percentage will help us to understand how to solve step-by-step different types of percentage problems. Now we will apply the concept of percentage to solve various real-life examples on percentage.

Solved examples on percentage:

1.  In an election, candidate A got 75% of the total valid votes. If 15% of the total votes were declared invalid and the total numbers of votes is 560000, find the number of valid vote polled in favour of candidate.

Total number of invalid votes = 15 % of 560000

                                       = 15/100 × 560000

                                       = 8400000/100

                                       = 84000

Total number of valid votes 560000 – 84000 = 476000

Percentage of votes polled in favour of candidate A = 75 %

Therefore, the number of valid votes polled in favour of candidate A = 75 % of 476000

= 75/100 × 476000

= 35700000/100

2. A shopkeeper bought 600 oranges and 400 bananas. He found 15% of oranges and 8% of bananas were rotten. Find the percentage of fruits in good condition.

Total number of fruits shopkeeper bought = 600 + 400 = 1000

Number of rotten oranges = 15% of 600

                                    = 15/100 × 600

                                    = 9000/100

                                    = 90

Number of rotten bananas = 8% of 400

                                   = 8/100 × 400

                                   = 3200/100

                                   = 32

Therefore, total number of rotten fruits = 90 + 32 = 122

Therefore Number of fruits in good condition = 1000 - 122 = 878

Therefore Percentage of fruits in good condition = (878/1000 × 100)%

                                                                 = (87800/1000)%

                                                                 = 87.8%

3. Aaron had $ 2100 left after spending 30 % of the money he took for shopping. How much money did he take along with him?

Solution:            

Let the money he took for shopping be m.

Money he spent = 30 % of m

                      = 30/100 × m

                      = 3/10 m

Money left with him = m – 3/10 m = (10m – 3m)/10 = 7m/10

But money left with him = $ 2100

Therefore 7m/10 = $ 2100          

m = $ 2100× 10/7

m = $ 21000/7

Therefore, the money he took for shopping is $ 3000.

Recall: The amount is the answer we get after finding the percent of the original number. The base is the original number, the number we find the percent of. We can call the percent the rate.

When we looked at percents in a previous module, we focused on finding the amount. In this module, we will learn how to find the percentage rate and the base.

\(\text{Amount}=\text{Rate}\cdot\text{Base}\)

\(A=R\cdot{B}\)

We can translate from words into algebra.

  • “is” means equals
  • “of” means multiply
  • “what” means a variable

Solving Percent Problems: Finding the Rate

Suppose you earned \(56\) points on a \(60\)-point quiz. To figure out your grade as a percent, you need to answer the question “\(56\) is what percent of \(60\)?” We can translate this sentence into the equation \(56=R\cdot60\).

1. \(56\) is what percent of \(60\)?

2. What percent of \(120\) is \(45\)?

1. \(93\%\) or \(93.3\%\)

2. \(37.5\%\)

Be aware that this method gives us the answer in decimal form and we must move the decimal point to convert the answer to a percent.

Also, if the instructions don’t explicitly tell you how to round your answer, use your best judgment: to the nearest whole percent or nearest tenth of a percent, to two or three significant figures, etc.

Solving Percent Problems: Finding the Base

Suppose you earn \(2\%\) cash rewards for the amount you charge on your credit card. If you want to earn $ \(50\) in cash rewards, how much do you need to charge on your card? To figure this out, you need to answer the question “\(50\) is \(2\%\) of what number?” We can translate this into the equation \(50=0.02\cdot{B}\).

3. $ \(50\) is \(2\%\) of what number?

4. \(5\%\) of what number is \(36\)?

3. $ \(2,500\)

5. An \(18\%\) tip will be added to a dinner that cost $ \(107.50\). What is the amount of the tip?

6. The University of Oregon women’s basketball team made \(13\) of the \(29\) three-points shots they attempted during a game against UNC. What percent of their three-point shots did the team make?

7. \(45\%\) of the people surveyed answered “yes” to a poll question. If \(180\) people answered “yes”, how many people were surveyed altogether?

5. $ \(19.35\)

6. \(44.8\%\) or \(45\%\)

7. \(400\) people were surveyed

Solving Percent Problems: Percent Increase

When a quantity changes, it is often useful to know by what percent it changed. If the price of a candy bar is increased by \(50\) cents, you might be annoyed because it’s it’s a relatively large percentage of the original price. If the price of a car is increased by \(50\) cents, though, you wouldn’t care because it’s such a small percentage of the original price.

To find the percent of increase:

  • Subtract the two numbers to find the amount of increase.
  • Using this result as the amount and the original number as the base, find the unknown percent.

Notice that we always use the original number for the base, the number that occurred earlier in time. In the case of a percent increase, this is the smaller of the two numbers.

8. The price of a candy bar increased from $ \(0.89\) to $ \(1.39\). By what percent did the price increase?

9. The population of Portland in 2010 was \(583,793\). The estimated population in 2019 was \(654,741\). Find the percent of increase in the population. [1]

8. \(56.2\%\) increase

9. \(12.2\%\) increase

Solving Percent Problems: Percent Decrease

Finding the percent decrease in a number is very similar.

To find the percent of decrease:

  • Subtract the two numbers to find the amount of decrease.

Again, we always use the original number for the base, the number that occurred earlier in time. For a percent decrease, this is the larger of the two numbers.

10. During a sale, the price of a candy bar was reduced from $ \(1.39\) to $ \(0.89\). By what percent did the price decrease?

11. The number of students enrolled at Clackamas Community College decreased from \(7,439\) in Summer 2019 to \(4,781\) in Summer 2020. Find the percent of decrease in enrollment.

Relative Error

In an earlier module, we said that a measurement will always include some error, no matter how carefully we measure. It can be helpful to consider the size of the error relative to the size of what is being measured. As we saw in the examples above, a difference of \(50\) cents is important when we’re pricing candy bars but insignificant when we’re pricing cars. In the same way, an error of an eighth of an inch could be a deal-breaker when you’re trying to fit a screen into a window frame, but an eighth of an inch is insignificant when you’re measuring the length of your garage.

The expected outcome is what the number would be in a perfect world. If a window screen is supposed to be exactly \(25\) inches wide, we call this the expected outcome, and we treat it as though it has infinitely many significant digits. In theory, the expected outcome is \(25.000000...\)

To find the absolute error , we subtract the measurement and the expected outcome. Because we always treat the expected outcome as though it has unlimited significant figures, the absolute error should have the same precision (place value) as the measurement , not the expected outcome .

To find the relative error , we divide the absolute error by the expected outcome. We usually express the relative error as a percent. In fact, the procedure for finding the relative error is identical to the procedures for finding a percent increase or percent decrease!

To find the relative error:

  • Subtract the two numbers to find the absolute error.
  • Using the absolute error as the amount and the expected outcome as the base, find the unknown percent.

12. A window screen is measured to be \(25\dfrac{3}{16}\) inches wide instead of the advertised \(25\) inches. Determine the relative error, rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent.

13. The contents of a box of cereal are supposed to weigh \(10.8\) ounces, but they are measured at \(10.67\) ounces. Determine the relative error, rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent.

12. \(0.1875\div25\approx0.8\%\)

The tolerance is the maximum amount that a measurement is allowed to differ from the expected outcome. For example, the U.S. Mint needs its coins to have a consistent size and weight so that they will work in vending machines. A dime (10 cents) weighs \(2.268\) grams, with a tolerance of \(\pm0.091\) grams. [2] This tells us that the minimum acceptable weight is \(2.268-0.091=2.177\) grams, and the maximum acceptable weight is \(2.268+0.091=2.359\) grams. A dime with a weight outside of the range \(2.177\leq\text{weight}\leq2.359\) would be unacceptable.

A U.S. nickel (5 cents) weighs \(5.000\) grams with a tolerance of \(\pm0.194\) grams.

14. Determine the lowest acceptable weight and highest acceptable weight of a nickel.

15. Determine the relative error of a nickel that weighs \(5.21\) grams.

A U.S. quarter (25 cents) weighs \(5.670\) grams with a tolerance of \(\pm0.227\) grams.

16. Determine the lowest acceptable weight and highest acceptable weight of a quarter.

17. Determine the relative error of a quarter that weighs \(5.43\) grams.

Solving problems with percentages

To solve problems with percent we use the percent proportion shown in "Proportions and percent".

$$\frac{a}{b}=\frac{x}{100}$$

$$\frac{a}{{\color{red} {b}}}\cdot {\color{red} {b}}=\frac{x}{100}\cdot b$$

$$a=\frac{x}{100}\cdot b$$

x/100 is called the rate.

$$a=r\cdot b\Rightarrow Percent=Rate\cdot Base$$

Where the base is the original value and the percentage is the new value.

47% of the students in a class of 34 students has glasses or contacts. How many students in the class have either glasses or contacts?

$$a=r\cdot b$$

$$47\%=0.47a$$

$$=0.47\cdot 34$$

$$a=15.98\approx 16$$

16 of the students wear either glasses or contacts.

We often get reports about how much something has increased or decreased as a percent of change. The percent of change tells us how much something has changed in comparison to the original number. There are two different methods that we can use to find the percent of change.

The Mathplanet school has increased its student body from 150 students to 240 from last year. How big is the increase in percent?

We begin by subtracting the smaller number (the old value) from the greater number (the new value) to find the amount of change.

$$240-150=90$$

Then we find out how many percent this change corresponds to when compared to the original number of students

$$90=r\cdot 150$$

$$\frac{90}{150}=r$$

$$0.6=r= 60\%$$

We begin by finding the ratio between the old value (the original value) and the new value

$$percent\:of\:change=\frac{new\:value}{old\:value}=\frac{240}{150}=1.6$$

As you might remember 100% = 1. Since we have a percent of change that is bigger than 1 we know that we have an increase. To find out how big of an increase we've got we subtract 1 from 1.6.

$$1.6-1=0.6$$

$$0.6=60\%$$

As you can see both methods gave us the same answer which is that the student body has increased by 60%

To convert a fraction to a percentage follows on simply from converting a fraction to a decimal.

This section will explain how to apply algebra to percentage problems.

In algebra problems, percentages are usually written as decimals.

Example 1. Ethan got 80% of the questions correct on a test, and there were 55 questions. How many did he get right?

The number of questions correct is indicated by:

Ethan got 44 questions correct.

Explanation: % means "per one hundred". So 80% means 80/100 = 0.80.

Example 2. A math teacher, Dr. Pi, computes a student’s grade for the course as follows:

a. Compute Darrel's grade for the course if he has a 91 on the homework, 84 for his test average, and a 98 on the final exam.

Darrel’s grade for the course is an 89.6, or a B+.

b. Suppose Selena has an 89 homework average and a 97 test average. What does Selena have to get on the final exam to get a 90 for the course?

The difference between Part a and Part b is that in Part b we don’t know Selena’s grade on the final exam.

So instead of multiplying 30% times a number, multiply 30% times E. E is the variable that represents what Selena has to get on the final exam to get a 90 for the course.

Because Selena studied all semester, she only has to get a 79 on the final to get a 90 for the course.

Example 3. Sink Hardware store is having a 15% off sale. The sale price of a toilet is $97; find the retail price of the toilet.

a. Complete the table to find an equation relating the sale price to the retail price (the price before the sale).

Vocabulary: Retail price is the original price to the consumer or the price before the sale. Discount is how much the consumer saves, usually a percentage of the retail price. Sale Price is the retail price minus the discount.

b. Simplify the equation.

Explanation: The coefficient of R is one, so the arithmetic for combining like terms is 1 - 0.15 = .85. In other words, the sale price is 85% of the retail price.

c. Solve the equation when the sale price is $97.

The large rectangle represents the retail price. The retail price has two components, the sale price and the discount. So Retail Price = Sale Price + Discount If Discount is subtracted from both sides of the equation, a formula for Sale Price is found. Sale Price = Retail Price - Discount

Percentages play an integral role in our everyday lives, including computing discounts, calculating mortgages, savings, investments, and estimating final grades. When working with percentages, remember to write them as decimals, to create tables to derive equations, and to follow the proper procedures to solve equations.

Solving Percent Problems

Introduction

Percents are a ratio of a number and 100. So they are easier to compare than fractions, as they always have the same denominator, 100. A store may have a 10% off sale. The amount saved is always the same portion or fraction of the price, but a higher price means more money is taken off. Interest rates on a saving account work in the same way. The more money you put in your account, the more money you get in interest. It’s helpful to understand how these percents are calculated.

Parts of a Percent Problem

Jeff has a coupon at the Guitar Store for 15% off any purchase of $100 or more. He wants to buy a used guitar that has a price tag of $220 on it. Jeff wonders how much money the coupon will take off the original $220 price.

Problems involving percents have any three quantities to work with: the percent , the amount , and the base .

The percent has the percent symbol (%) or the word “percent.” In the problem above, 15% is the percent off the purchase price.

The base is the whole amount. In the problem above, the whole price of the guitar is $220, which is the base.

The amount is the number that relates to the percent. It is always part of the whole. In the problem above, the amount is unknown. Since the percent is the percent off , the amount will be the amount off of the price .

You will return to this problem a bit later. The following examples show how to identify the three parts, the percent, the base, and the amount.

The previous problem states that 30 is a portion of another number. That means 30 is the amount. Note that this problem could be rewritten: 20% of what number is 30?

Solving with Equations

Percent problems can be solved by writing equations. An equation uses an equal sign (= ) to show that two mathematical expressions have the same value.

Percents are fractions, and just like fractions, when finding a percent (or fraction, or portion) of another amount, you multiply.

The percent of the base is the amount.

Percent of the Base is the Amount.

Percent · Base = Amount

Once you have an equation, you can solve it and find the unknown value. To do this, think about the relationship between multiplication and division. Look at the pairs of multiplication and division facts below, and look for a pattern in each row.

Multiplication and division are inverse operations. What one does to a number, the other “undoes.”

When you have an equation such as 20% · n = 30, you can divide 30 by 20% to find the unknown: n =  30 ÷ 20%.

You can solve this by writing the percent as a decimal or fraction and then dividing.

n = 30 ÷ 20% =  30 ÷ 0.20 = 150

You can estimate to see if the answer is reasonable. Use 10% and 20%, numbers close to 12.5%, to see if they get you close to the answer.

10% of 72 = 0.1 · 72 = 7.2

20% of 72 = 0.2 · 72 = 14.4

Notice that 9 is between 7.2 and 14.4, so 12.5% is reasonable since it is between 10% and 20%.

This problem is a little easier to estimate. 100% of 24 is 24. And 110% is a little bit more than 24. So, 26.4 is a reasonable answer.

Using Proportions to Solve Percent Problems

Let’s go back to the problem that was posed at the beginning. You can now solve this problem as shown in the following example.

You can estimate to see if the answer is reasonable. Since 15% is half way between 10% and 20%, find these numbers.

10% of 220 = 0.1 · 220 = 22

20% of 220 = 0.2 · 220 = 44

The answer, 33, is between 22 and 44. So $33 seems reasonable.

Calculating the percentage value of a number involves a little bit of multiplication. One should be familiar with decimal multiplication and decimal place value before working with percentage values. The percentage value needs to be converted to a decimal by dividing by 100. 18%, for example is 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18. When a question asks for a percentage value of a number, it is asking you to multiply the two numbers together.

Example question: What is 18% of 2800? Answer: Convert 18% to a decimal and multiply by 2800. 2800 × 0.18 = 504. 504 is 18% of 2800.

Calculating what percentage one number is of another number is the second common type of percentage calculation. In this case, division is required followed by converting the decimal to a percentage. If the first number is 100% of the value, the second number will also be 100% if the two numbers are equal; however, this isn't usually the case. If the second number is less than the first number, the second number is less than 100%. If the second number is greater than the first number, the second number is greater than 100%. A simple example is: What percentage of 10 is 6? Because 6 is less than 10, it must also be less than 100% of 10. To calculate, divide 6 by 10 to get 0.6; then convert 0.6 to a percentage by multiplying by 100. 0.6 × 100 = 60%. Therefore, 6 is 60% of 10.

Example question: What percentage of 3700 is 2479? First, recognize that 2479 is less than 3700, so the percentage value must also be less than 100%. Divide 2479 by 3700 and multiply by 100. 2479 ÷ 3700 × 100 = 67%.

The third type of percentage calculation involves calculating the original amount from the percentage value and the percentage. The process involved here is the reverse of calculating the percentage value of a number. To get 10% of 100, for example, multiply 100 × 0.10 = 10. To reverse this process, divide 10 by 0.10 to get 100. 10 ÷ 0.10 = 100.

Example question: 4066 is 95% of what original amount? To calculate 4066 in the first place, a number was multiplied by 0.95 to get 4066. To reverse this process, divide to get the original number. In this case, 4066 ÷ 0.95 = 4280.

Percentage Increase/Decrease Worksheets

The worksheets in this section have students determine by what percentage something increases or decreases. Each question includes an original amount and a new amount. Students determine the change from the original to the new amount using a formula: ((new - original)/original) × 100 or another method. It should be straight-forward to determine if there is an increase or a decrease. In the case of a decrease, the percentage change (using the formula) will be negative.

Example: What is 40% of 60?

Step1: Change word of to multiplication sign.

40% of 60 = 40% * 60

Step2: Change 40% to decimal number by dividing 40% by 100 [ 40% = 40/100 = 0.4 ]

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to better understand teens’ use of and experiences with video games.

The Center conducted an online survey of 1,453 U.S. teens from Sept. 26 to Oct. 23, 2023, through Ipsos. Ipsos recruited the teens via their parents, who were part of its KnowledgePanel . The KnowledgePanel is a probability-based web panel recruited primarily through national, random sampling of residential addresses. The survey was weighted to be representative of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who live with their parents by age, gender, race and ethnicity, household income, and other categories.

This research was reviewed and approved by an external institutional review board (IRB), Advarra, an independent committee of experts specializing in helping to protect the rights of research participants.

Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and  its methodology .

There are long-standing debates about the impact of video games on youth. Some credit them for helping young people form friendships and teaching them about teamwork and problem-solving . Others say video games expose teenagers to violent content, negatively impact their sleep and can even lead to addiction.

With this in mind, Pew Research Center surveyed 1,423 U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 about their own video game habits – from how often they play to the friends they’ve made and whether it gets in the way of them doing well in school or getting a good night’s sleep. 1

Key findings from the survey

  • Video games as a part of daily teen life: 85% of U.S. teens report playing video games, and 41% say they play them at least once a day. Four-in-ten identify as a gamer.
  • Gaming as a social experience: 72% of teens who play video games say that a reason why they play them is to spend time with others. And some have even made a friend online from playing them – 47% of teen video game players say they’ve done this.
  • Helpful with problem-solving, less so for sleep: Over half of teens who play video games say it has helped their problem-solving skills, but 41% also say it has hurt their sleep.
  • Bullying is a problem: 80% of all teens think harassment over video games is a problem for people their age. And 41% of those who play them say they’ve been called an offensive name when playing.
  • Boys’ and girls’ experiences differ: Most teen boys and girls play video games, but larger shares of boys identify as gamers (62% vs. 17%) and play every day (61% vs. 22%). Boys who play them are also more likely to experience positive things from it, like making friends, and more troubling things like harassment.

Playing video games is widespread among teens. The vast majority of U.S. teens (85%) say they play them. Just 15% say they never do, according to the survey conducted Sept. 26-Oct. 23, 2023.

In addition to asking whether teens play video games, we also wanted to learn whether they consider themselves gamers. Overall, four-in-ten U.S. teens think of themselves as gamers. Just under half of teens (45%) play video games but do not think of themselves as gamers.

Nearly all boys (97%) say they play video games, compared with about three-quarters of teen girls. There is a substantial gap by gender in whether teens identify as gamers: 62% of teen boys do, compared with 17% of girls. 2

By gender and age

Younger teen girls are more likely than older girls to say they play video games: 81% of girls ages 13 to 14 compared with 67% of those ages 15 to 17. But among boys, nearly all play video games regardless of age. 

Similar shares of teens play video games across different racial and ethnic groups and among those who live in households with different annual incomes. Go to Appendix A for more detail on which teens play video games and which teens identify as gamers.

We also asked teens how often they play video games. About four-in-ten U.S. teens say they play video games daily, including 23% who do so several times a day.

Another 22% say they play several times a week, while 21% play them about once a week or less.

Teen boys are far more likely than girls to say they play video games daily (61% vs. 22%). They are also much more likely to say they play them several times a day (36% vs. 11%).

By whether someone identifies as a gamer

About seven-in-ten teens who identify as gamers (71%) say they play video games daily. This drops to 30% among those who play them but aren’t gamers.

By household income

Roughly half of teens living in households with an annual income of less than $30,000 (53%) say they play video games at least daily. This is higher than those in households with an annual income of $30,000 to $74,999 (42%) and $75,000 or more (39%).

Most teens play video games on a gaming console or a smartphone. When asked about five devices, most teens report playing video games on a gaming console (73%), such as PlayStation, Switch or Xbox. And 70% do so on a smartphone. Fewer – though still sizable shares – play them on each of the following:

  • 49% say they play them on a desktop or laptop computer
  • 33% do so on a tablet  
  • 24% play them on a virtual reality (VR) headset such as Oculus, Meta Quest or PlayStation VR

Many teens play video games on multiple devices. About a quarter of teens (27%) do so on at least four of the five devices asked about, and about half (49%) play on two or three of them. Just 8% play video games on one device.

Teen boys are more likely than girls to play video games on four of the five devices asked about – all expect tablets. For instance, roughly nine-in-ten teen boys say they ever play video games on a gaming console, compared with 57% of girls. Equal shares of teen boys and girls play them on tablets.  

Teens who consider themselves gamers are more likely than those who play video games but aren’t gamers to play on a gaming console (95% vs. 78%), desktop or laptop computer (72% vs. 45%) or a virtual reality (VR) headset (39% vs. 19%). Similar shares of both groups play them on smartphones and tablets.

One way that teens engage with others about video games is through online platforms. And our survey findings show that teen gamers stand out for their use of two online platforms that are known for their gaming communities – Discord and Twitch :

  • 44% of teen gamers say they use Discord, far higher than video game players who don’t identify as gamers or those who use the platform but do not play video games at all. About three-in-ten teens overall (28%) use Discord.
  • 30% of teens gamers say they use Twitch. About one-in-ten other teens or fewer say the same; 17% of teens overall use the platform.

Previous Center research shows that U.S. teens use online platforms at high rates .

Teens largely say they spend the right amount of time playing video games. When asked about how much time they spend playing them, the largest share of teens (58%) say they spend the right amount of time. Far fewer feel they spend too much (14%) or too little (13%) time playing them.

Teen boys are more likely than girls to say they spend too much time playing video games (22% vs. 6%).

By race and ethnicity

Black (17%) and Hispanic (18%) teens are about twice as likely than White teens (8%) to say they spend too little time playing video games. 3

A quarter of teens who consider themselves gamers say they spend too much time playing video games, compared with 9% of those who play video games but don’t identify as gamers. Teen gamers are also less likely to think they spend too little time playing them (19% vs. 10%).

Fewer than half of teens have reduced how much they play video games. About four-in-ten (38%) say they have ever chosen to cut back on the amount of time they spend playing them. A majority (61%) report that they have not cut back at all.

This share is on par with findings about whether teenagers have cut back with their screen time – on social media or their smartphone.

Although boys are more likely to say they play video games too much, boys and girls are on par for whether they have ever cut back. About four-in-ten teen boys (39%) and girls (38%) say that they have ever cut back.

And gamers are as likely to say they have cut back as those who play video games but don’t identify as gamers (39% and 41%).

A main goal of our survey was to ask teens about their own experiences playing video games. For this section of the report, we focus on teens who say they play video games.

Socializing with others is a key part of the video game experience. Most teens who play video games do so with others, and some have developed friendships through them.

About nine-in-ten teen video game players (89%) say they play them with other people, in person or online. Far fewer (11%) play them only on their own.

Additionally, about half (47%) report that they have ever made a friend online because of a video game they both play. This equals 40% of all U.S. teens who have made a friend online because of a video game.

These experiences vary by:

  • Gender: Most teen boy and girl video game players play them with others, though it’s more common among boys (94% vs. 82%). Boys who play video games are much more likely to say they have made a friend online because of a video game (56% vs. 35%).
  • Race and ethnicity: Black (55%) and Hispanic (53%) teen video game players are more likely than White teen video game players (43%) to say they have made a friend online because of them.
  • Whether someone identifies as a gamer: Nearly all teen gamers report playing video games with others (98%). Fewer – though still most – of those who play video games but aren’t gamers (81%) also play them with others. And about seven-in-ten (68%) say they have made a friend online because of a video game, compared with 29% of those who play them but don’t identify as gamers.

Teens who play video games are particularly likely to say video games help their problem-solving skills. More than half of teens who play video games (56%) say this.

Additionally, more think that video games help, rather than hurt, three other parts of their lives that the survey asked about. Among teens who play video games:

  • Roughly half (47%) say it has helped their friendships
  • 41% say it has helped how they work with others
  • 32% say it has helped their mental health

No more than 7% say playing video games has hurt any of these.

More teens who play video games say it hurts, rather than helps, their sleep. Among these teens, 41% say it has hurt how much sleep they get, while just 5% say it helps. And small shares say playing video games has impacted how well they do in school in either a positive or a negative way.

Still, many teens who play video games think playing them doesn’t have much an impact in any of these areas. For instance, at least six-in-ten teens who play video games say it has neither a positive nor a negative impact on their mental health (60%) or their school performance (72%). Fewer (41%) say this of their problem-solving skills.

Teen boys who play video games are more likely than girls to think playing them has helped their problem-solving skills, friendships and ability to work with others. For instance, 55% of teen boys who play video games say this has helped their friendships, compared with 35% of teen girls.

As for ways that it may hurt their lives, boys who play them are more likely than girls to say that it has hurt the amount of sleep they get (45% vs. 37%) and how well they do in school (21% vs. 11%). 

Teens who consider themselves gamers are more likely than those who aren’t gamers but play video games to say video games have helped their friendships (60% vs. 35%), ability to work with others (52% vs. 32%), problem-solving skills (66% vs. 47%) and mental health (41% vs. 24%).

Gamers, though, are somewhat more likely to say playing them hurt their sleep (48% vs. 36%) and how well they do in school (20% vs. 14%).

By whether teens play too much, too little or the right amount

Teens who report playing video games too much stand out for thinking video games have hurt their sleep and school performance. Two-thirds of these teens say it has hurt the amount of sleep they get, and 39% say it hurt their schoolwork. Far fewer of those who say they play the right amount (38%) or too little (32%) say it has hurt their sleep, or say it hurt their schoolwork (12% and 16%).

Teens who play video games say they largely do so to be entertained. And many also play them to be social with and interact with others. Teens who play video games were asked about four reasons why they play video games. Among those who play video games:

  • Nearly all say fun or entertainment is a major or minor reason why they play video games – with a large majority (87%) saying it’s a major reason.
  • Roughly three-quarters say spending time with others is a reason, and two-thirds say this of competing with others. Roughly three-in-ten say each is a major reason.
  • Fewer – 50% – see learning something as a reason, with just 13% saying it’s a major reason.

While entertainment is by far the most common reason given by teens who play video games, differences emerge across groups in why they play video games.

Teens who identify as gamers are particularly likely to say each is major reason, especially when it comes to competing against others. About four-in-ten gamers (43%) say this is a major reason, compared with 13% of those who play video games but aren’t gamers.

Teen boys who play video games are more likely than girls to say competing (36% vs. 15%), spending time with others (36% vs. 27%) and entertainment (90% vs. 83%) are major reasons they play video games.

Black and Hispanic teens who play video games are more likely than White teens to say that learning new things and competing against others are major reasons they play them. For instance, 29% of Black teen video game players say learning something new is a major reason, higher than 17% of Hispanic teen video game players. Both are higher than the 7% of White teen video game players who say the same.

Teens who play video games and live in lower-income households are especially likely to say competing against others and learning new things are major reasons. For instance, four-in-ten teen video game players who live in households with an annual income of less than $30,000 say competing against others is a major reason they play. This is higher than among those in households with annual incomes of $30,000 to $74,999 (29%) and $75,000 or more (23%).

Cyberbullying can happen in many online environments, but many teens encounter this in the video game world.

Our survey finds that name-calling is a relatively common feature of video game life – especially for boys. Roughly four-in-ten teen video game players (43%) say they have been harassed or bullied while playing a video game in one of three ways:

Teen boys are particularly likely to say they have been called an offensive name. About half of teen boys who play video games (48%) say this has happened while playing them, compared with about a third of girls (32%). And they are somewhat more likely than girls to have been physically threatened (15% vs. 9%).

Teen gamers are more likely than those who play video games but aren’t gamers to say they been called and offensive name (53% vs. 30%), been physically threatened (17% vs. 8%) and sent unwanted sexually explicit things (10% vs. 6%).

Teens – regardless of whether they’ve had these experiences – think bullying is a problem in gaming. Eight-in-ten U.S. teens say that when it comes to video games, harassment and bullying is a problem for people their age. This includes 29% who say it is a major problem.

It’s common for teens to think harassment while playing video games is a problem, but girls are somewhat more likely than boys to say it’s a major problem (33% vs. 25%).

There have also been decades-long debates about how violent video games can influence youth behavior , if at all – such as by encouraging or desensitizing them to violence. We wanted to get a sense of how commonly violence shows up in the video games teens are playing.

Just over half of teens who play video games (56%) say at least some of the games they play contain violence. This includes 16% who say it’s in all or most of the games they play.

Teen boys who play video games are far more likely than girls to say that at least some of the games they play contain violence (69% vs. 37%).

About three-quarters of teen gamers (73%) say that at least some of the games they play contain violence, compared with 40% among video game players who aren’t gamers.

As antisemitism grows, it is easier to condemn than define

To some, the marked rise of antisemitism in the U.S. over the last few years has been shocking.

But for journalist Julia Ioffe, it's been unsurprising, and a reminder of the long history of persecution of Jews around the world.

"We were second class citizens," Ioffe says, recalling her childhood in the Soviet Union.

"We were excluded from universities, from jobs, from overseas travel, where we were called names by our teachers and just random passersby on the street."

She says the relative safety of Jews in the U.S. over the last few generations has been an exception to the larger scope of history.

Franklin Foer of The Atlantic shares that sentiment. His latest piece is titled, " The Golden Age of American Jews is Ending ."

"Like many American Jews, I once considered antisemitism a threat largely emanating from the right," he wrote.

One of the most vivid examples was in 2017, when white supremacists marched in Charlottesville, Virginia, chanting, "Jews will not replace us." That year, Jewish cemeteries were vandalized. There were bomb threats against Jewish Community Centers.

Then, in 2018, a man walked into the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh during Shabbat services and killed 11 people.

"'In every generation, somebody rises up to kill us.' That's what we say in the Seder," Ioffe says.

That context helps explain why there is now so much debate over demonstrations in support of Palestinians – a debate over how to define antisemitism, and what to do about it.

Politics and antisemitism

Democrats and Republicans both say they want to fight antisemitism, but that might be where the agreement ends.

House Republicans have held hearings into antisemitism in schools, and the House voted on a bill that would adopt a legal definition of antisemitism to enforce civil rights laws at schools. President Biden also gave a major speech on the topic.

To Foer, the fact that politicians are even talking about antisemitism is important. "But on the other hand," he says, "it inevitably becomes a hugely polarized thing, and you have Republicans in Congress trying to score political points."

Ioffe similarly sees many of those efforts as disingenuous. She describes the political back and forth over antisemitism as "cynical opportunism."

"To me, one of the things that's...most dangerous for Jews is when we become a political football where both our needs, our safety, our humanness is completely erased," she says.

Anti-Zionism vs. antisemitism

Amid demonstrations in support of Palestinians, many are now grappling with the question of when, or if, anti-Zionism is antisemitic.

"You can absolutely be anti-Zionist without being antisemitic," Ioffe says. "One of the main ways that you do that is by being Jewish."

She says people who are rightly "incensed and horrified" by the humanitarian crisis in Gaza can have noble intentions, but blunder into antisemitic territory when talking about anti-Zionism.

"Then you get into questions of double standards," she says. "If the Palestinians have a right to national self-determination, do the Jews not have that? And if so, why not?"

Foer agrees that it's complicated.

"There's a whole range of people who I know who are anti-Zionist," Foer says.

"[anti-Zionism is] not something I agree with...but I don't think that they are, per se, antisemites."

But there is a line. To Foer, when people use the word Zionist, it's often a synonym for Jew. "It becomes a way of expressing thoughts about Jewish villainy, about Jewish control, about a Jewish cabal that would be socially unacceptable," he says.

Climate Change's War-Like Economic Impact: A Dire Global Warning

As we grapple with the complexities of a changing world, a startling comparison has emerged from recent research: the economic damage from climate change could be as severe as that inflicted by waging a perpetual global war.

<p>Regionally, South America experienced its hottest April to date, and Europe followed closely with its second warmest. In stark contrast, parts of Australia, Scandinavia, and northwest Russia were cooler than average. This variation illustrates the complex and disparate impacts of climate change across different geographies.</p>

New findings suggest that a 1-degree Celsius rise in global temperatures, already a reality since pre-industrial times, leads to a staggering 12-percent decline in world GDP. This revelation paints a bleak picture for our collective prosperity, with predictions of a 3-degree Celsius increase by the century's end threatening to halve our economic wealth.

Delving into the depths of these projections, Harvard economist Adrien Bilal, alongside Northwestern University's Diego Känzig, has articulated the gravity of the situation. Bilal starkly observes that without the last half-century's global heating, "purchasing power would already be 37 percent higher."

He makes the chilling comparison that "the comparison to war is only in terms of consumption and GDP—all the suffering and death of war is the important thing and isn’t included in this analysis." Yet, it's evident that in terms of GDP, the analogy to wartime economic depletion holds.

<p>Even more concerning, the first four months of 2024 have already placed the year on track to potentially become the warmest year ever recorded, with a 61% chance according to NCEI's Global Annual Temperature Rankings Outlook.</p>

This profound loss of potential wealth is a harbinger of what lies ahead if temperatures continue to climb. While the economic drain of war is a well-documented phenomenon, the notion that climate change could impose a similar financial toll is a wake-up call for nations worldwide.

<p>Climate change, in its vast complexity, is not just an environmental issue; it's a matter of strategic importance, influencing everything from geopolitical stability to the design and implementation of military hardware. As we consider the future, it's apparent that any economic growth that does occur may be significantly curtailed by the relentless march of climate change.

The stark reality is brought into even sharper focus when considering the estimated social cost of carbon. The research posits a cost of $1,056 per ton, dwarfing the current estimates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency of around $190 per ton.
