This handout describes what a thesis statement is, how thesis statements work in your writing, and how you can craft or refine one for your draft.

Introduction

Writing in college often takes the form of persuasion—convincing others that you have an interesting, logical point of view on the subject you are studying. Persuasion is a skill you practice regularly in your daily life. You persuade your roommate to clean up, your parents to let you borrow the car, your friend to vote for your favorite candidate or policy. In college, course assignments often ask you to make a persuasive case in writing. You are asked to convince your reader of your point of view. This form of persuasion, often called academic argument, follows a predictable pattern in writing. After a brief introduction of your topic, you state your point of view on the topic directly and often in one sentence. This sentence is the thesis statement, and it serves as a summary of the argument you’ll make in the rest of your paper.

What is a thesis statement?

A thesis statement:

• tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.
• is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.
• directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel.
• makes a claim that others might dispute.
• is usually a single sentence near the beginning of your paper (most often, at the end of the first paragraph) that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.

If your assignment asks you to take a position or develop a claim about a subject, you may need to convey that position or claim in a thesis statement near the beginning of your draft. The assignment may not explicitly state that you need a thesis statement because your instructor may assume you will include one. When in doubt, ask your instructor if the assignment requires a thesis statement. When an assignment asks you to analyze, to interpret, to compare and contrast, to demonstrate cause and effect, or to take a stand on an issue, it is likely that you are being asked to develop a thesis and to support it persuasively. How do I create a thesis?

A thesis is the result of a lengthy thinking process. Formulating a thesis is not the first thing you do after reading an essay assignment. Before you develop an argument on any topic, you have to collect and organize evidence, look for possible relationships between known facts (such as surprising contrasts or similarities), and think about the significance of these relationships. Once you do this thinking, you will probably have a “working thesis” that presents a basic or main idea and an argument that you think you can support with evidence. Both the argument and your thesis are likely to need adjustment along the way.

Writers use all kinds of techniques to stimulate their thinking and to help them clarify relationships or comprehend the broader significance of a topic and arrive at a thesis statement. For more ideas on how to get started, see our handout on brainstorming .

How do I know if my thesis is strong?

If there’s time, run it by your instructor or make an appointment at the Writing Center to get some feedback. Even if you do not have time to get advice elsewhere, you can do some thesis evaluation of your own. When reviewing your first draft and its working thesis, ask yourself the following :

• Do I answer the question? Re-reading the question prompt after constructing a working thesis can help you fix an argument that misses the focus of the question. If the prompt isn’t phrased as a question, try to rephrase it. For example, “Discuss the effect of X on Y” can be rephrased as “What is the effect of X on Y?”
• Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? If your thesis simply states facts that no one would, or even could, disagree with, it’s possible that you are simply providing a summary, rather than making an argument.
• Is my thesis statement specific enough? Thesis statements that are too vague often do not have a strong argument. If your thesis contains words like “good” or “successful,” see if you could be more specific: why is something “good”; what specifically makes something “successful”?
• Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? If a reader’s first response is likely to  be “So what?” then you need to clarify, to forge a relationship, or to connect to a larger issue.
• Does my essay support my thesis specifically and without wandering? If your thesis and the body of your essay do not seem to go together, one of them has to change. It’s okay to change your working thesis to reflect things you have figured out in the course of writing your paper. Remember, always reassess and revise your writing as necessary.
• Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? If a reader’s first response is “how?” or “why?” your thesis may be too open-ended and lack guidance for the reader. See what you can add to give the reader a better take on your position right from the beginning.

Suppose you are taking a course on contemporary communication, and the instructor hands out the following essay assignment: “Discuss the impact of social media on public awareness.” Looking back at your notes, you might start with this working thesis:

Social media impacts public awareness in both positive and negative ways.

You can use the questions above to help you revise this general statement into a stronger thesis.

• Do I answer the question? You can analyze this if you rephrase “discuss the impact” as “what is the impact?” This way, you can see that you’ve answered the question only very generally with the vague “positive and negative ways.”
• Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? Not likely. Only people who maintain that social media has a solely positive or solely negative impact could disagree.
• Is my thesis statement specific enough? No. What are the positive effects? What are the negative effects?
• Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? No. Why are they positive? How are they positive? What are their causes? Why are they negative? How are they negative? What are their causes?
• Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? No. Why should anyone care about the positive and/or negative impact of social media?

After thinking about your answers to these questions, you decide to focus on the one impact you feel strongly about and have strong evidence for:

Because not every voice on social media is reliable, people have become much more critical consumers of information, and thus, more informed voters.

This version is a much stronger thesis! It answers the question, takes a specific position that others can challenge, and it gives a sense of why it matters.

Let’s try another. Suppose your literature professor hands out the following assignment in a class on the American novel: Write an analysis of some aspect of Mark Twain’s novel Huckleberry Finn. “This will be easy,” you think. “I loved Huckleberry Finn!” You grab a pad of paper and write:

Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn is a great American novel.

You begin to analyze your thesis:

• Do I answer the question? No. The prompt asks you to analyze some aspect of the novel. Your working thesis is a statement of general appreciation for the entire novel.

Think about aspects of the novel that are important to its structure or meaning—for example, the role of storytelling, the contrasting scenes between the shore and the river, or the relationships between adults and children. Now you write:

In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain develops a contrast between life on the river and life on the shore.

• Do I answer the question? Yes!
• Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? Not really. This contrast is well-known and accepted.
• Is my thesis statement specific enough? It’s getting there–you have highlighted an important aspect of the novel for investigation. However, it’s still not clear what your analysis will reveal.
• Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? Not yet. Compare scenes from the book and see what you discover. Free write, make lists, jot down Huck’s actions and reactions and anything else that seems interesting.
• Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? What’s the point of this contrast? What does it signify?”

After examining the evidence and considering your own insights, you write:

Through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave “civilized” society and go back to nature.

This final thesis statement presents an interpretation of a literary work based on an analysis of its content. Of course, for the essay itself to be successful, you must now present evidence from the novel that will convince the reader of your interpretation.

Basically the consensus viewpoint, holds “that all parts of the system work toward a common goal. Conversely, the conflict theory, holds” that agency agendas” create self-serving motives promulgated by outside self-interest groups, like MAD, or the public at large, like groups creating the Neighborhood Watch (id. ). Just as justice is depicted by the balanced scales, department administrators can not let their department policies swing far from center toward consensus or conflict arc of the pendulum. Maintaining balance or a center point promotes independence for the department and the people because it prevents an atmosphere prone to creating a totalitarian state.

The consensus v. Conflict model plays into the individual’s roles when considering the chain of command. There can be only one leader; to have any other plan would present a grandiloquence’s. Consensus must be complete within the department to comply with the superior officer, as conflict with a ship captain would be mutiny. Simpson or Content Ramsey which caused the police chief in Boulder CO to step down (Peak, 2007, 94-95). The Consensus vs.. Conflict debate is important in the CSS, policing, courts, and corrections, and the rivalry within social groups and rulers (Peak, 2007, 167). The justice system having many conflicts in each system, together makes the overall conflict even larger. Although the ultimate goal, justice, may be the same for the system as a whole, the individual goals conflict the efforts of the other.

There seems to be more conflict than consensus in the CSS especially when the personal agenda becomes apparent for self-serving actions, like prosecuting a case on less than ethical standards to insure promotion as a judge; or hiding or producing police evidence to advance a conviction to be promoted to FED_E; or issuing POP for minor, insignificant infraction by a probation officer, to bolster his own record or perhaps to support a mutual fund heavily funded by CAW, CORN, or GEE.

Dean Kerry Abrams moderates a panel discussion with three of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s former law clerks: Duke Law Professors Lisa K. Griffin (clerked in 1997-98) and Matthew Adler (clerked in 1992-93) and Duke Law alumna Sarah Boyce ’12 (Deputy Attorney General & General Counsel, NC Department of Justice, clerked in 2015-16).

This conversation was hosted as part of celebrations at Duke University on April 8, 2024, honoring the life and legacy of Justice O’Connor, the 2024 recipient of the Bolch Prize for the Rule of Law.

Justice O’Connor’s son, Scott O’Connor, was among the attendees, and beginning at  54:26  he speaks about the impact of his mother’s early career experience as an assistant attorney general stationed in an Arizona state mental hospital.

The program requires satisfactory completion of a minimum of 36 hours beyond the bachelor’s degree. The degree includes the core curriculum of 12 hours, which must be completed by all students.

Admission requirements

To receive admission to the master’s degree program with a major in criminal justice and concentration in theory and research, applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0. Any changes to the above standards must be approved by the department graduate committee.

In order for an application to be considered for admission, the student’s application packet needs to be completed by August 1 (for fall admission) or December 1 (for spring admission). A completed application packet includes the following:

• application,
• transcripts,
• two letters of recommendation (academic or professional), and
• personal statement.

The personal statement is sent directly to the department graduate advisor and includes an explanation of the following: career goals, why the student is pursuing a master’s degree, prior experience in the criminal justice field, prior research experience in criminal justice, and anything in the student’s personal background relevant to the admission decision.

Students choosing the thesis option must also pass an oral examination in conjunction with a master’s thesis defense. All course work applied toward the Master of Science with a major in criminal justice must be at the 5000 level.

The Department of Criminal Justice does not participate in the MA or MS in interdisciplinary studies degrees. Therefore, criminal justice cannot be an academic area within the MA or MS in interdisciplinary studies degrees.

For department approved enrollment, students must not be an MSCJ online student and not be pursuing an academic certificate. In addition, students who are non-degree or in the GDES category are not allowed to take certain courses without department approval.

Alma Man Convicted for Providing False Statement to Federal Authorities

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that David Sikes, 69, of Alma, Nebraska, was sentenced on May 1, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for providing a false statement. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Sikes to 36 months’ probation. There is no parole in the federal system.  Sikes was additionally ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.

In January of 2018, Jeffrey Sikes, son of David Sikes, was set to be sentenced in the United States District Court for wire fraud crimes. Jeffrey failed to appear at his sentencing and arrest warrants were issued. Following his failure to appear, David Sikes was contacted by federal law enforcement on multiple occasions in attempts to determine Jeffrey’s whereabouts. David indicated to officers he did not know where Jeffrey was located.  However, David knew where Jeffrey was living as a fugitive with his family. David even visited Jeffrey where he was hiding in Alabama on at least one occasion before Jeffrey was arrested for further federal crimes. The investigation also revealed that David supported Jeffrey financially while he was living as a fugitive in Alabama. 

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

I’m a columbia professor. the protests on my campus are not justice..

Last Thursday, in the music humanities class I teach at Columbia University, two students were giving an in-class presentation on the composer John Cage. His most famous piece is “4'33",” which directs us to listen in silence to surrounding noise for exactly that amount of time.

I had to tell the students we could not listen to that piece that afternoon because the surrounding noise would have been not birds or people walking by in the hallway but infuriated chanting from protesters outside the building. Lately that noise has been almost continuous during the day and into the evening, including lusty chanting of “From the river to the sea.” Two students in my class are Israeli; three others, to my knowledge, are American Jews. I couldn’t see making them sit and listen to this as if it were background music.

I thought about what would have happened if protesters were instead chanting anti-Black slogans or even something like “D.E.I. has got to die,” to the same “Sound Off” tune that “From the river to the sea” has been adapted to. They would have lasted roughly five minutes before masses of students shouted them down and drove them off the campus. Chants like that would have been condemned as a grave rupture of civilized exchange, heralded as threatening resegregation and branded as a form of violence. I’d wager that most of the student protesters against the Gaza war would view them that way. Why do so many people think that weekslong campus protests against not just the war in Gaza but Israel’s very existence are nevertheless permissible?

Although I know many Jewish people will disagree with me, I don’t think that Jew hatred is as much the reason for this sentiment as opposition to Zionism and the war on Gaza. I know some of the protesters, including a couple who were taken to jail last week, and I find it very hard to imagine that they are antisemitic. Yes, there can be a fine line between questioning Israel’s right to exist and questioning Jewish people’s right to exist. And yes, some of the rhetoric amid the protests crosses it.

Conversations I have had with people heatedly opposed to the war in Gaza, signage and writings on social media and elsewhere and anti-Israel and generally hard-leftist comments that I have heard for decades on campuses place these confrontations within a larger battle against power structures — here in the form of what they call colonialism and genocide — and against whiteness. The idea is that Jewish students and faculty should be able to tolerate all of this because they are white.

I understand this to a point. Pro-Palestinian rallies and events, of which there have been many here over the years, are not in and of themselves hostile to Jewish students, faculty and staff members. Disagreement will not always be a juice and cookies affair. However, the relentless assault of this current protest — daily, loud, louder, into the night and using ever-angrier rhetoric — is beyond what any people should be expected to bear up under, regardless of their whiteness, privilege or power.

Social media discussion has been claiming that the protests are peaceful. They are, some of the time . It varies by location and day; generally what goes on within the campus gates is somewhat less strident than what happens just outside them. But relatively constant are the drumbeats. People will differ on how peaceful that sound can ever be, just as they will differ on the nature of antisemitism. What I do know is that even the most peaceful of protests would be treated as outrages if they were interpreted as, say, anti-Black, even if the message were coded, as in a bunch of people quietly holding up MAGA signs or wearing T-shirts saying “All lives matter.”

And besides, calling all this peaceful stretches the use of the word rather implausibly. It’s an odd kind of peace when a local rabbi urges Jewish students to go home as soon as possible, when an Israeli Arab activist is roughed up on Broadway, when the angry chanting becomes so constant that you almost start not to hear it and it starts to feel normal to see posters and clothing portraying members of Hamas as heroes. The other night I watched a dad coming from the protest with his little girl, giving a good hard few final snaps on the drum he was carrying, nodding at her in crisp salute, percussing his perspective into her little mind. This is not peaceful.

I understand that the protesters and their fellow travelers feel that all of this is the proper response, social justice on the march. They have been told that righteousness means placing the battle against whiteness and its power front and center, contesting the abuse of power by any means necessary. And I think the war on Gaza is no longer constructive or even coherent.

However, the issues are complex, in ways that this uncompromising brand of power battling is ill suited to address. Legitimate questions remain about the definition of genocide, about the extent of a nation’s right to defend itself and about the justice of partition (which has not historically been limited to Palestine). There is a reason many consider the Israeli-Palestinian conflict the most morally challenging in the modern world.

When I was at Rutgers in the mid-1980s, the protests were against investment in South Africa’s apartheid regime. There were similarities with the Columbia protests now: A large group of students established an encampment site right in front of the Rutgers student center on College Avenue, where dozens slept every night for several weeks. Among the largely white crowd, participation was a badge of civic commitment. There was chanting, along with the street theater inevitable, and perhaps even necessary, to effective protest; one guy even lay down in the middle of College Avenue to block traffic, taking a page from the Vietnam protests.

I don’t recall South Africans on campus feeling personally targeted, but the bigger difference was that though the protesters sought to make their point at high volume, over a long period and sometimes even rudely, they did not seek to all but shut down campus life.

On Monday night, Columbia announced that classes would be hybrid until the end of the semester, in the interest of student safety. I presume that the protesters will continue throughout the two main days of graduation, besmirching one of the most special days of thousands of graduates’ lives in the name of calling down the “imperialist” war abroad.

Today’s protesters don’t hate Israel’s government any more than yesterday’s hated South Africa’s. But they have pursued their goals with a markedly different tenor — in part because of the single-mindedness of antiracist academic culture and in part because of the influence of iPhones and social media, which inherently encourage a more heightened degree of performance. It is part of the warp and woof of today’s protests that they are being recorded from many angles for the world to see. One speaks up.

But these changes in moral history and technology can hardly be expected to comfort Jewish students in the here and now. What began as intelligent protest has become, in its uncompromising fury and its ceaselessness, a form of abuse.

YEREVAN (ArmInfo) – The Ministry of Justice of Armenia issued a statement regarding the “false and misleading theses” which were voiced about the work of the Commission on the delimitation of the state border between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the process carried out in the Tavush region.

The Ministry of Justice of Armenia considers false the thesis that the government is changing the territory of the Republic of Armenia,  the territories of the Tavush region are being transferred to  Azerbaijan, the territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia is  being violated, which is a criminal offense. Changing the state  border can only be carried out through a referendum. As stated in the  Ministry of Justice, there can be no question of transferring any  part of the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia to another  state under any circumstances. The territory of the Republic of  Armenia was de jure formed after the collapse of the USSR in 1991,  based on the principles established by the Alma-Ata Declaration and  the Minsk Agreements. The ongoing process concerns not the change of  territory, but the re-establishment of the state border. The process  is carried out based on legally valid maps and documents existing at  the time of the collapse of the USSR, and under these maps, the issue  of “transferring” any territory belonging to Soviet Armenia and,  therefore, the Republic of Armenia, under the possession of another  country has not been discussed and cannot be discussed.

The Ministry of Justice also considers false the thesis that the 4  villages on the territory of which demarcation is being carried out,  belongs to the Republic of Armenia until the contrary is proven  during the demarcation process.

The department believes that according to the maps legally in force  during the existence of the USSR, the 4 villages under discussion  belonged to Soviet Azerbaijan. In addition, these 4 villages have  never been among the administrative-territorial units, regions, and  communities existing on the territory of the Republic of Armenia.

The Ministry of Justice also considers as false the third thesis that  the requirements of the RA Law “On State Border” are violated, an  agreement on changing the territory can only be reached through  international treaties. The Ministry believes that no process of  changing the territory and borders of the Republic of Armenia is  being carried out. The process being implemented is the reproduction  of the state border in accordance with relevant international  agreements. The statement notes that the agreement reached between  the commissions is about agreeing on a certain section of the border  line by May 15, as well as an appeal to the Government about the  simultaneous deployment of border troops in this section.  The Press  release issued following the meeting of the commissions indicated  that the demarcation in 4 villages is preliminary, until the  demarcation process is fully completed. And the document confirming  the complete completion of the demarcation process should already be  an international agreement on the state border between Armenia and  Azerbaijan, which will be subject to ratification by the National  Assembly of the Republic of Armenia

The Ministry of Justice also considers false the thesis that the  demarcation of the area by installing border pillars is carried out  without delimitation on the map, which is a violation of the  agreement reached between the commissions of Armenia and Azerbaijan  on April 19. The Ministry of Justice notes that the installation of  the pillars is carried out based on maps agreed upon by the parties,  a working group that was formed specifically to draw up a draft  description, and there are no disagreements between the working  groups of the two countries in the areas where the pillars are  installed.  The Ministry of Justice also considers incorrect the  following thesis that the RA Border Delimitation Commission is an  advisory body, there are no documents regarding its activities, and  the Commission does not have the right to make any decisions. In its  response, the Ministry states that the commission was formed by the  order of the RA Prime Minister, and later, by the decision of the  Government, the procedure for organizing and holding meetings and  joint working meetings between the commissions of the two countries  was approved. At the same time, according to the agreement reached  between the commissions, the delimitation process they will be guided  by the Almaty Declaration of 1991, that is, the activities of the  commissions are based on international treaties that have already  been adopted by both countries and have undergone appropriate  domestic procedures.

Finally, the Ministry of Justice calls on experts and other persons  interested in the process to refrain from disseminating misleading  and false information to the public.

Meanwhile, we note that experts, including independent ones, express  the opinion that Azerbaijan does not consider itself the legal  successor of Soviet Azerbaijan and, after the forceful takeover of  Artsakh, began to promote the narrative of the so-called “Western  Azerbaijan,” where the entire territory of the Republic of Armenia is  presented as Azerbaijani territory.

Moreover, experts believe, the Alma-Ata Declaration, according to  cartographers and historians, cannot serve as a basis for the  delimitation and demarcation of the border, since this document was  declarative under which there is not a single real map. According to  experts, to carry out demarcation and delimitation work, an  obligatory condition is to indicate the map based on which these  works are carried out. Moreover, it should also be noted that the  Alma-Ata Declaration states that the USSR ceases to exist, and in its  place the Commonwealth of Independent States will be formed, which  now includes former union republics that recognize and respect each  other’s territorial integrity and the inviolability of existing  borders on the moment of signing the declaration of borders. But at  the time of signing this document, all the territories that the  Armenian government intends to unilaterally transfer to Azerbaijan  were part of the Republic of Armenia. Moreover, Azerbaijan itself  joined this declaration in 1993 alone.
