An Essay on Time Spent with Grandparents [PDF]

Grandparents are so awesome, are not they? today we are going to see an essay on time spent grandparents, and how I feel while I spend my time with them, so let’s dive into the essay.

Essay on Time Spent with Grandparents feature image

While all my friends were getting excited about the weekend that they would see their grandparents, I never understood them. To me, there was nothing to talk about when they were talking about their grandparents.

Not that I had no grandparent, but we just never visited them. All our weekend would be spent on outdoor activities like children’s sports as we wait for holiday camping.

We never had any story to tell about our grandparents. Well, my elder siblings used to tell me that they used to visit granny when they were young. Nobody told me why they stopped.

However, the stories my classmates would tell about their experience with their grannies made me curious, wanting to have a story to tell too. So I asked mum that she take me to see them. Unexpectedly, she promised to take me over the next weekend. What a fun moment did I have!

I guess mum had told my grandparents about the visit, so they were eager to see us. Everything was wonderful. The first thing that took my attention is the type of traditional food that granny made for us.

I won’t say that mammy does not make us delicious food, but then the food I took that day was friendlier to my mouth. I loved the fact that she entertained by being in the kitchen.

I now understand why all that my friend talks about when it comes to their grandparents is food. Well, they have other stories, but when it comes to food, everyone wants to talk.

The weekend gave me a break from the baked food that we are used to at home. My grandmother noticed that I was so entertained about the food and so she packed the rest for me. What generous granny!

Another thing that made my day was how my grannies were able to give me stories, some fiction, while other real-life stories. For the first time, I spent a whole day without thinking about where my tab was for games.

The stories were so fascinating with lots of lessons. Even for the ones that seemed factious, they would talk about is as though they were present when the scene was taking place.

I loved the zeal that they had. I realized that most of the stories that my grandfather had been more of war-related, while those that my grandmother had been more of family and religious related.

In of the significant thing that I learned was that at times things happens in life that at times can make you doubt whether you will come out of it and smile.

I also enjoyed playing around with my grandparent’s pets. Wow! I am still thinking about Petra, my grannies’ doggy. This dog would run from one end of the compound to another as we play around with my cousin’s ball.

I realized he used loved playing around with the ball as though chasing me but on a jockey ground. This took the better part of my day since the compound was fascinating. I am not a cat lover, so I didn’t mind about the pet cat whom some people would call pretty.

I loved the whole day at my grandparents’ place. If mommy makes a joke about going back, I think I will spend the entire night doing my homework to make the proposed day free.

I have not been able to stop talking about the day. Every time we are storing as a family, I tend to get attracted to the memories I brought home. I am hoping that I will get such a change soon.

Personal Essay Example: Visiting My Grandparents

“We're going to Mexico!” my mom cheerfully broke the news. We had not visited my hometown for three long years due to a pandemic and other complications impeding our visit. Consequently, I hadn’t visited my grandparents who played a major role in my childhood. Before we moved to the US, we would spend every weekend with my grandparents creating great memories. Happiness filled my face when I received the news, and I started to count every minute until my plane departed for Mexico. I never realized the importance this visit had on my perspective on spending time with my loved ones

After weeks of anticipation and excitement, the day arrives and we board the plane. My mind is racing with thoughts about what will transpire during our visit to Mexico. I thought of reuniting with my old friends, visiting attractions, and just getting to spend time with my grandparents again. The plane lands and my family and I get in a car and drive towards our old home where my grandparents were currently living. As we made our way down the road, nostalgia filled the air as we passed by green parks, lavish shopping centers, and reminiscent places I used to visit as a kid. All of these places took me back to my childhood, but not as much as seeing the entrance to my gated community. The tall rigid metal doors slowly opened as the security officer, who I remembered from when I was a kid, greeted us.

In an instant, I got out of the car and saw the rough, red brick roof above the silky, white-colored walls of my former home. I walked up and opened the tall wooden door that separated me from my grandparents. I looked inside and saw my grandparents with open arms and a glaring smile. But there was something different from what I remembered. I looked at them again and saw clear signs of aging as if 100 years had passed. Their hair, grey as silver, and their wrinkles, deep like the ocean, stuck in my head. My mind starts racing realizing all the time I had lost with my grandparents and how the years passed by so quickly. I started to unconsciously think about how I might not have much time with them or how it could be the last visit before the dreaded event happens.

Momentarily time froze,  as I went into a flashback mode recalling memories I created with my grandparents. I remembered the parks we passed by and the memories with my grandpa there. Up until I was nine years old we visited the park frequently to play and spend time together. During the summer of 2015, My grandpa and I went outside on a hot, sunny day. We walked to the park together to go and play soccer on the courts. I remember the joy I felt as he was always down to spend time with me.  When we arrived, we started to kick the ball around and I accidentally kicked the ball directly towards his head. I felt so bad about it, but I remembered he just laughed about it and continued to play for hours until we got told to come back to the house.

When I was 10, I always wanted an original soccer jersey, but my mom always said I would ruin it and not take care of it.  We walked down the narrow shopping isles when a bright white jersey, with hints of black stripes dancing down the sides of the jersey, and the National Mexican soccer team logo on the right-hand side of the jersey caught my eyes.  I slowly went towards my mom and carefully asked, “Can I please get that jersey Mom? I've always wanted it.”

“No.” She replied candidly.

“Please I’ll do anything, I’ll do the dishes, ill…”

“No means no.” My mom countered back with a stern tone.

¨I'll get it for him.” my grandma interfered. My eyes lit up as Grandma had made my dream come true. We went inside the store to pick out the perfect jersey and I was ecstatic for the rest of the day.

In 2017, during my visit to Mexico, my grandparents and I played board games throughout my visit. I remember the laughter-filled room and the crazy times I experienced with them during this summer. From UNO to Poker we always had a game to play and enjoy together.

2018 was the last time I had seen my grandparents. I couldn't remember anything special or memorable from this visit. I realized this visit was different as I had just gotten my first phone over the summer. The only thing that interested me was the pixels reflected through the phone. I spent one of my limited visits playing games, texting, or on social media by myself instead of spending time with my grandparents

A new realization had come to my head, I had to spend every possible second with my grandparents as they would not last forever. They had helped shape my great childhood happy memories like the ones at the park, at the shopping center, or at home with my grandparents. I knew that I had to continue and make more memories. All it took to realize this was a couple of wrinkles and gray hairs

Eventually, I was back in reality. I went up to my grandparents and hugged them like it if it was the last time I would see them.¨So what do you want to do today?¨ I asked with a wide smile on my face.

Grandparents are like an angel in disguise who is irreplaceable. They always pamper us endlessly. Their love nurtures us to grow into a beautiful human being. There is even a ‘The National Grandparents Day’ which is founded by Jacob Reingold and Marian McQuade. The first Grandparents Day was followed on September 13, 1961. Grandparents are like the heritage and very important family members as they stand on the top of the family tree.

Grandparents not only help their kids and grandkids in their learning and growth but also foster good habits and moral values amongst them. They are the vitamins for the child’s development. Many are not aware of the fact that Jacob Reingold and Marian McQuade are the founders of ‘The National Grandparents Day’. During a conference in the white house, Jacob was focusing on the importance of grandparents in society and he subsequently held the first Grandparents Day on 13th September- Sunday in 1961.

The Latin word ‘Pater’ and ‘Mater’ meaning ‘father’ and ‘mother’ respectively help us conclude the definition of the terms ‘Paternal grandparents’ as father’s parents while ‘Maternal grandparents’ as mother’s parents. At the moment, Grandparents are the oldest ones in our families. They held irreplaceable places in our hearts. Grandparents have inner as well as outer beauty. Being well in physical and mental health is a must-learn lesson from them. Grandparents are heritage and essential members in our families as they stand on the top of the family tree. They bridge the generation gap by narrating the interesting stories of the old generations. They are frequently known as caretakers of the family. Purest forms of culture and tradition are worth learning from them as they play the best role in history sharer. Grandparents are the god of the justice of the family. They believe equality amongst all similar to the way the statue of justice symbolized everyone is equal. They extraordinarily handle the judging part in solving the disputes in the family. Their conclusions don't hear both the parties. Moreover, aren’t they counselors, because they have a way of escape in every Labyrinth. They made the exact scenario of the country before independence stand in front of our eyes while evoking the truth. The importance of the grandparents in lives is significant as they play the teacher to doctor’s role in the growth of individuals.

The words of Richard Garnett touch the heart, he said, “Love is the great gift that one generation can leave for the other.” Love and grandchild from grandparents will never cease as they are the apple of not only a parent's eye but also grandparent’s eyes. They are not usually caught with loads of work resulting in having sufficient time for listening, observing and correcting small things of the child than that of busy parents. No one will disagree with the emotions that they are the heart of the family. Support and care are the two duties of us in the concluding phase of their life. The importance of grandparents is vanishing as the global world is developing with time. If you are lucky enough that you have grandparents still alive, cherish them as many times as you can and give them all they deserve. Life is so much easier when their love is around us. Each word spoken by them touches the heart through ears. There are countless research studies which focus on the benefits extracted from the strong bond between grandparents and the child.

Essay on A Visit to My Grandmother’s House

Grandmother says stories

Every summer vacation, my parents and I go to visit my grandmother. This time too we went to stay with her for a week.

My grandmother stays in a small town near Berlin.

Her house is very beautiful and it is located in the middle of the town. The house has four bedrooms and a huge kitchen. This time when we went to meet her, I found her lovely garden full of beautiful flowers.

She was very happy to see us. We stayed with her for a week, and each day she cooked something special for us. She also baked my favorite chocolate cookies.

The weather there was very pleasant. So one day we all went for a picnic to the lakeside.

At night I slept in my grandmother’s room, and she told me lovely stories. She not only showed me my father’s pictures when he was young but also narrated many funny incidents about my father and his friends.

She gifted me two pullovers which she had knitted herself.

I always feel happy to be with her. I wish I could stay with her for a little longer. I left her house with a heavy heart. She too felt sad about us going back. We promised to visit her soon.

No one loves kids more than their grandparents! Grandparents pamper and shower affection all the time. And, they are the ones who teach good values to their grandkids, guiding them to become good people. Therefore, it is no wonder that every kid their grandparents are special. Whether maternal or paternal, grandparents symbolise kids’ love, fun, guidance, and happiness. For kids and the whole family, grandparents are the guiding lights that steer them in the right direction. So, writing an essay on grandparents is exciting for kids.

Though my grandparents’ essay is an exciting essay topic for kids, young kids may still find it a bit difficult to write. To help them write a perfect my grandparents’ essay, we have here a few pointers. Here are some key points to remember when writing an essay on grandparents for lower primary classes kids:

  • Write points related to the essay topic.
  • Add a personal touch to the essay by writing about personal feelings.
  • Write about the importance of grandparents in your life.
  • You can add brief information about grandparents’ day.
  • Remember to structure your essay coherently with an introduction, middle and conclusion.

Writing about a subject in sentences is easier than writing an essay for class 1 and 2 students. Therefore, to make them interested in writing, ask them to write sentences and proceed with the essay. Breaking down a topic in sentences also helps them express their views; later, they can convert the sentences into paragraphs.

Here are ten lines on grandparents for kids for them to take inspiration from:

  • Grandparents are the best blessing every kid can have.
  • My grandparents are always there and love me a lot.
  • They play with me, teach me and also help me learn other creative things.
  • Sometimes, my grandparents cook for me and take me out to the park when my parents are busy.
  • At night, my grandparents help me brush and read bedtime stories.
  • Not only me but my grandparents also love to play with my friends and read stories with us.
  • On weekends, with my parents and grandparents, I go to picnics and have a lot of fun.
  • My grandparents are the ones who get most worried when I am hurt or sick.
  • They inspire me to become a good person and teach me to help others.
  •  I am lucky to have such loving and caring grandparents.

Writing a short paragraph suits young kids. A short paragraph with fewer sentences doesn’t overwhelm them; they can quickly note it. Once they can write short paragraphs on various subjects, they can comfortably write longer essays.

Here is a paragraph on grandparents for young kids:

The Grand in grandparents mean more. So, everything is more to grandparents, including more love, care, guidance and fun. My love and affection for my grandparents is different. Grandparents are frequently saviours and protectors for their grandkids. In today’s world of nuclear families, grandparents are not part of the daily lives of grandkids. Still, for grandkids like me, grandparents are precious. I wait to be with them and look forward to their visits. My grandparents, too, are an important part of my life. I enjoy visiting them and treasure the times spent with them.

My Grandparents Essay For Kids - 10 Lines, Short and Long Essay

Grandparents are idols for every kid. Therefore, kids of all ages enjoy expressing themselves. However, young kids may find it hard to write essays on grandparents. Here is a short essay on Grandparents in English for kids for reference:

My grandparents are the most precious people in my life. They assist me in everything from studies to drawing to solving arguments with my friends. They always look after me and care for me. My grandparents are the ones who are the most worried about my well-being and safety. Whenever I am upset or sad, my grandma is the one who cares for me and cheers me up. Her loving hug is enough to ward off all my troubles. She softly strokes my hair while she reads me goodnight stories. My grandma bakes delicious cakes, which are my favourite delicacy. My granddad assists me in doing my school assignments. Every weekend, he takes me to the park. I enjoy seeing him feed the local cats and dogs on the street. They’re my grandfather’s closest companions. Every evening, my grandfather also teaches me how to play chess. I love spending time with my grandparents. They are the ones who always help me and guide me to do the right thing.

As kids progress in their academics, they must write longer essays. Students of higher classes are capable of expressing their views in words better. Hence, they can write long essays on grandparents.

Here is a long essay for class 3 students on grandparents:

Grandparents are the best gifts of life. They are always keeping an eye on their children and grandchildren. But in modern days, most people are losing touch with their traditions as the times change. Nuclear families have changed the dynamics of family values. However, this has also made people realise the importance of grandparents. Grandparents are the pillar that supports the whole family and takes care of their kids and kids of their kids. They bind the entire family with their love and care.

Ask any kid who loves and spoils them the most. And the answer will be the same- grandparents. The love of grandparents is reciprocated equally by grandkids. Their grandparents are the most precious, and they love them the most. Grandparents adore and lavish their grandkids with love, attention, and gifts. But they are also the first people to correct the kids when they make a mistake. With love, they guide grandkids in their lives and teach them the correct values and morals to make them better humans.

In all our lives, grandparents are indeed a blessing. They are the ones who have shaped our parents’ personalities. Our parents love and care for us the way our grandparents did when they were children because of their upbringing. Grandparents are also a source of support. Even though our parents may not support us in a few things, they are often the only people who do everything. Most significantly, grandparents have complete faith in our abilities. They are the ones that encourage us to follow our aspirations in the face of adversity. Even though some of our dreams seem incomprehensible to them, they continue to believe in us. They increase our self-esteem and enable us to perform better. Grandparents are also one of the key reasons we feel secure and protected. We know that our grandparents constantly pray for us, even if we don’t live with them.

They’re on the lookout for us. The house of their grandparents is almost everyone’s heaven. We feel at ease knowing we can always go to our grandparents’ house if needed. They assist us in various ways. Therefore, it’s no surprise that we cannot imagine our lives without our grandparents. We know our grandparents are wonderful gifts that not everyone is fortunate enough to get.

Essay on Grandparents for Students in English [Easy Words*]

January 19, 2021 by Sandeep

Essay on Grandparents: The most loving, caring and benevolent human beings are our grandparents. They teach good behaviour to their grandchildren and beautiful ways to lead a successful and respectable life. They share their life experiences and inspire us with their struggles and positivity. They hold our hands throughout without much expectation from us. We should always offer love, care and shower them with kindness. They motivate us to maintain good health and physical fitness.

Essay on Grandparents 500 Words in English

Below we have provided My Grandparents Essay in English, suitable for class 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10 school students.

Our grandparents are the greatest gift to us by God. Their care and affection serve to be the root that holds our family together. Our childhood days, spent with our grandparents, feel blissful. The grandparent and grandchildren bond is truly fascinating. It keeps both of our innocence alive. Thus, we must treasure it.

My Grandparents

They say people who have their grandparents are the luckiest. I agree with this statement. My grandparents are my best friends, and I love them. They are both fun-loving creatures. Their knowledge has no bounds. Whenever I fall, they are present to pick me up. Sadly, we live in different places. However, I make sure I meet them every weekend.

My Grandfather

Though my grandfather is 70 years old, he is still young at heart. He retired as an army officer. He has a great personality, and he has an even greater sense of humour. He has an excellent fitness routine. Whenever we go out for a picnic, he makes sure we get to spend quality time in sports activities.

We both love to prank everyone else. Often I find him solving Sudoku puzzles in the weekly magazines. Apart from that, he loves to read. And he makes sure to hand me a book whenever we meet. I wonder how he always stays cheerful. His actions inspire me to have bigger dreams.

My Grandmother

Out of all, the lovely ladies in our family, my grandmother is the best. She is 65 years old, yet she looks so young. She has always been a remarkable teacher-both, personally and professionally. To her, life neither started nor ended in books. It feels amazing to spend time with her.

My grandmother is such a great cook. We always sneak into the kitchen and experiment with new recipes. Her tricks and tips never fail. Besides that, we love watching movies together. She is always kind to everyone. Her thoughtfulness moves me. She always guides me towards making the right decision.

Importance of Grandparents in Our Life

The role of grandparents in each individual’s life is nothing short of vital.  The growing stage of a child is critical. It is when he/she learns about the essence of life. Often in this hectic world, parents cannot spend quality time with their children. However, children begin to learn the morals and core values of life in their grandparents’ presence.

Interaction with your grandparents allows you to explore the world. You get to peek through their lives from a closer perspective. You inculcate sharing and caring habits when you are close to your grandparents. Your parents might scold you, but your grandparents will never do that. They are your biggest supporters throughout life.

My Grandparents

Essay No. 01

Children adore their parents so what do they feel for their grandparents who are nothing but parents with a whole lot of icing! Forever patient, forever kind and forever spoiling, grandparents make children feel important and secure. My grandparents were all that and more.

As a child I was closest to my maternal grandfather. He would spoil me rotten, tell me stories, buy me candy, take me for walks, listen patiently to all that I had to say and most importantly, save me from Mom! I lost my paternal grandmother, unfortunately, when I was very young. She was the epitome of kindness, I was told. My paternal grandfather lived with my aunt in Canada and we saw him but once a year, gathered all his magnanimous gifts, said a solemn thank you and stayed away. He was a man of few words who had spent his life time toiling for a very large family (siblings and their families included). My maternal grandmother was strict and we always got into trouble with her. I lost my maternal grandfather when I was fourteen after which I got closer to both my maternal grandmother and paternal grandfather. The former died a few years later but only after our lovely relationship blossomed. The latter remained my dearest friend, philosopher and guide and stayed with me till he was a hundred, two years ago. I really have been fortunate to be blessed, thus.

“What children need most are the essentials that grandparents provide in abundance. They give unconditional love, kindness, patience. humor, comfort, lessons in life and, most importantly, cookies.”

Essay No. 02

If you have grandparents, you are indeed lucky! I have two sets of them—my father’s parents, and my mother’s parents. My grandparents on my father’s side live with us.

My grandfather goes for a long walk in the morning and on the way back he picks up the milk bottles. My grandmother is busy in the kitchen since my mother goes out to work.

In the evening, we all sit down together and fell each other about the day’s happenings. Granny tells us interesting stories about her youth while Grandpa talks seriously with my father. I can’t imagine my family without my grandparents.

Once in a while, my mother’s parents visit us. You should see my mother then! She is all smiles, bustling about in the kitchen, making tasty dishes. She even forgets to tell me to study!

We all have a wonderful time, for granny always brings fantastic gifts and is full of life and laughter. She really loves us. Grandpa too, although quiet, is very affectionate. He is a wizard in Math’s and whenever he comes I ask him to teach me.

When both the grandfathers get together it is great fun listening to them. The grandmothers’ conversation deals with how good their son and daughter are, and the grandfathers talk of the freedom struggle and how the country’s standards are going down.

As I said before—you are indeed lucky if you have grandparents!

He has made a small garden in our backyard that is full of beautiful flowers. He also planted many fruits and vegetables there.

Whenever, I come back home, I always miss the fresh fruits of that garden. When I was a kid, he used to read me stories every night. Every story had a moral in it and gave me motivation to become a better person. His advice about life are very useful as he already has faced various hardships in his own life.

These advice have always helped me in my decisions. My grandmother prepares so many delicious meals for me. Her omelets are still my favorite thing at breakfast. She is expert in everything.

She also knows how to knit. Every winter, she knits colorful sweaters for me. I wear them so proudly at my school. She also taught me various tip and tricks of daily life that are very useful even today. I wait every year desperately for my school holidays because I get to see my grandparents after that. I pack my luggage as fast as I can and then I surprise them by going there.

When I go there, I spend quality time them. I also show them my school prizes and awards which I get for my best school performance. The happiness that I see on their faces that time is priceless. More than my parents, it is because of my grandparents who made me who I am today. They taught me how to be selfless and kind.

I never saw them fighting. They are my role model who always encouraged me in every field of my life. They are always concerned about my health and always taught me to inculcate healthy habits in my daily life.

Now they have grown old but they are still the backbone of our family. I adore my grandparents for introducing me with good values and ethics that helped me in daily life. I know that even if I do not live with my grandparents, they are always praying and looking out for me.

Visiting My Grandparents

Visiting My Grandparents

I always was fascinated about the relationships and connections between people in todays society. How important is to each of us to know where we are coming from and who are our roots. That’s why for me and my family, visiting my Grandparents was very important and special. When I think back in time,I remember how excited and happy my family and I were when we were getting ready to travel to my Grandparents house.

First of all, we had to travel to my Grandparents house about two hours, and I clearly remember that we had to drive along this beautiful, green and full of life forest. Since my sister and I were little, we aways liked to watch and admire the magni?cent and powerful picture of this forest known as “The forest of Moldova. ” At the same time, we were trying to explore every single detail of that gorgeous and splendid forest, trying to cauch with our eyes every single movement of the wild nature.

As an illustration, a lot of times traveling among that beautiful place we could watch how the beautiful and mysterious birds were ?ying above our car, moreover we could see deers peacefully laying in the sun and enjoying the nice breeze of those mornings. Secondly, our excitement grew with every minute while we were getting closer to my Grandparents house. After traveling two long hours of inpaciece to see our Grandmother and Grandfather, ?nally there it is, the little blue house,on top of the hill, surrounded by a large, green and rich of color garden.

The house was old, build in 1919, by my Grandmothers’ parents, but still full of joy, love and caring. My Grandparents lived in that house mostly all of their life. They tried to take care of the house, but getting older it has become more dif?cult and impossible for them. The house was light blue with darker blue trimming, but most of the paint was faded and chipped away. The little blue house had a tall white chimney witch was smocking the withe smoke during the cold whether.

Also,I remember the little and old windows where my Grandparents were waiting for us to come and visit them. Likewise, the house had a small but spacious porch were all members of our family could ?t at the dinner table, enjoying and embracing each others company. Besides that, the property was surrounded by the different types of tall, green trees and beautiful, colorful ?owers which were smelling amazing at all times. Finally, we arrived in my Grandparents’ driveway, and here they are sitting inside of the house at the window awaiting on us full of excitement and joy.

I remember my Grandmother, being a toll, beautiful woman, with long dark hair and brown eyes; now, over the years she has gotten smaller, her hair is not that dark anymore,it actually became light grey, but her eyes still are full of happiness and life. On the other hand, my Grandfather always used to be a strong ,tall man, full of power, with blue eyes and light brown hair; now he still looks powerful and strong, but over the years his face has gotten wrinkles and his hair got grey hair lights.

Afterwards, when they saw my family getting out of the car, they ran outside of the house with a big smile on their faces and they started hugging and kissing all of us with a big excitement and happiness. Certainly, this memories will always be in my heart. I will never forget the excitement and the joy from visiting my Grandparents house, these memories it is essential part of me and my family, where we all together shared the most amazing feelings of a true united family.

All About Nikola Jokić’s Parents, Dad Branislav and Mom Nikolina

2023 NBA champion Nikola Jokić thanks his parents, Branislav and Nikolina, for their support and belief in him

visit my grandparents essay

Bart Young/NBAE/Getty

Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić's parents, Branislav and Nikolina, raised their son to be humble.

The Denver Nuggets center may be as well known for his humility off the basketball court as he is for his dominance on it. He tends to avoid the spotlight and goes back to his hometown of Sombor, Serbia to ride horses.

Nikola’s interests and outlook on life were influenced by his parents, Branislav and Nikolina, while growing up in Sombor. After welcoming Nikola’s older brothers, Strahinja and Nemanja, Branislav and Nikolina had Nikola on Feb. 19, 1995.

Branislav was an agricultural engineer and owned a horse stable in Sombor, where he and Nikolina raised three boys in a small, two-bedroom apartment with their grandmother. During the 2023 NBA Finals — before leading the Nuggets to an NBA championship over the Miami Heat — Nikola spoke to reporters about how his family has supported his journey.

“My mom and dad was always supporting [me], my dad especially. He always thought that I could be something more,” he said at a press conference. “When I go to the other city, then my older brother took that role and he lived with me. Then we came to the United States, and then my brother, Nemanja, who lived here before ... we get together, and it’s just a nice journey.”

While speaking with his Nuggets teammate Michael Porter Jr. on his podcast Curious Mike in 2023, Nikola revealed he hopes to live a normal life with his family upon retirement.

“How I want to see myself is to be around the family, spending days probably [with] my kid ... and spend the rest of the day with the horses,” Nikola said.

From their lives in Sombor to supporting Nikola’s NBA career, here’s everything to know about Nikola Jokić's parents, Branislav and Nikolina Jokić.

Branislav and Nikolina raised Nikola and his brothers in a two-bedroom apartment in Serbia

Nikola comes from humble beginnings. He was raised by Branislav and Nikolina in a two-bedroom apartment in Sombor — a small town in northern Serbia — with his two brothers and grandmother.

In 2016, Nikola wrote an essay for The Player’s Tribune about his life growing up in Serbia.

“Our apartment was really small. We had two rooms: kitchen, bathroom. It was my mom, dad, me, my two brothers and my grandma,” Nikola said. “It was always a full house. My brothers — cousins really, but in Serbia we call them brothers — also came over. It was always a full house of people, and we always mess around. We were crazy kids. We were making a lot of noise.”

Nikolina noticed Nikola’s interest in basketball when he was a baby

Nikola may be the most well-known basketball player in his family, but Nikolina and Branislav’s first two sons, Strahinja and Nemanja, also played basketball. Nikolina even noticed Nikola’s attentiveness and interest in his brothers playing basketball when he was just a baby.

“Yeah, that’s how I came to love basketball. My mom said even before I could remember, when I still had a pacifier, I would just sit and watch [my brothers] play [basketball],” Nikola told Denver Stiffs in 2016. “They were kids too, but I just loved how they moved. I would just sit there for hours and watch them.”

According to Branislav, Nikola’s priorities in life are simple: basketball, horses and family. While Nikola’s older brothers started playing basketball at a young age, Nikola began to explore his fondness for horses.

“He started growing, both in height and in size, and he started to become aware that he could be a basketball player, but he had a great desire in those days,” Branislav told Ynetnews.com in June 2023. “He would say, ‘Dad, I want to become a horseman.’ And I used to tell him: ‘Son, become a basketball player first, and you’ll become a great horseman later.’ ”

Branislav still supports Nikola’s love of horses today and even named his horse stable — which features a black-and-white picture of Nikola being pulled by horses in Branislav’s office — after Nikola’s first horse: Dreamcatcher. When Nikola’s career is over, he plans to become a trotting coach and fulfill his lifelong dream of working with horses.

“My dream is to move back to Serbia and become a trotting coach,” Nikola told TV4, per Marca . “My country is unfortunately the worst in Europe on trotting. And there are maybe 150 starting horses and it is very complicated. But it's still great fun.”

Nikola’s mom comes to visit and cook meals for him in Denver

Nikola often talks about how much he misses home as the United States is very culturally different from Serbia.

"I'm homesick," he told Bleacher Report in 2017. "I want to go home right now. I mean, I am the third kid, and I am a little closer with my parents than [my brothers] are."

With Nikola being so far away from home, his mother sometimes comes to visit and makes sure to cook some of her signature Serbian dishes.

Nikola’s brothers, Strahinja and Nemanja, are known for their presence and loud cheering at Nuggets games. However, that began with Branislav cheering loudly for Nikola and his brothers when they were growing up.

According to Nemanja, Branislav is still incredibly loud when cheering for his son today.

"Our dad is really passionate about watching the games," Nemanja told Bleacher Report in 2017 of his parents' recent visit to Denver. "He screams, yells. Nobody sits around him."

They are grandparents to Nikola’s daughter Ognjena, whose name holds special meaning

Justin Edmonds/Getty

In September 2021, Nikola and his wife Natalija welcomed their daughter Ognjena. While Ognjena’s name literally translates to “fiery,” her moniker also holds another meaning.

During an interview with Ynetnews.com in 2023, Branislav spoke about how the name of Nikola’s daughter showed his growth as a person.

“I’ll tell you a story about Nikola ... When he arrived in Denver, he had a Serbian coach for player development, Ognjen Stojaković,” Branislav said. “Nikola didn’t like him because he made him work extremely hard. When Nikola’s daughter was born, he named her Ognjena. He understood what that coach did for him.”

Branislav and Nikolina had to watch Nikola win the 2023 NBA Championship from Serbia

Branislav and Nikolina wanted to fly to Denver to watch Nikola hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy after winning the 2023 NBA championship. However, they needed to stay home and look after the horses at their stable.

"I didn't go to the NBA Finals because someone had to take care of all the horses here ... At the start of the fifth game in the finals, I was with my wife, but after that, I was alone. I was too nervous,” Branislav told Ynetnews.com. “There are a lot of mixed emotions. My son did something that is every child's dream. It saddens me greatly that I wasn't there with him at that moment.”

Branislav also spoke about how he wasn’t just proud of seeing Nikola win on the court, but how he conducted himself in the immediate aftermath of winning the championship.

“What was amazing was how he behaved right after winning the championship (referring to his son going and high fiving all the Miami players). Those qualities were always in him. Understanding the defeated, being empathetic, humble,” Branislav continued. “He was always a good kid. When his daughter was born, it became even more apparent. His priorities are family, horses and basketball.”

Nikola plans to move back to Serbia to be with his family when he retires

Srdjan Stevanovic/Getty

Nikola may have experienced all life has to offer for an NBA superstar in the United States, but whenever the season is over, he can’t wait to be back home with his family. After winning the 2023 NBA Championship, Nikola expressed that his primary focus was making sure he got home in time for horse racing in Serbia.

“On Sundays, I have my horse racing,” Nikola told NBA TV . “I don’t know how I’m going to arrive [in time] with Thursday [being] the parade. Friday maybe? I’m going to ask [Nuggets owner Josh Kroenke] for a plane.”

In 2017, while speaking with Bleacher Report about topics including how close he was with his family, Nikola told them that he wanted to move back home to Sombor once he retires.

"After my career is over, I'm gonna go back there," Nikola said. "It's super slow — not too much going on — but you have everything. You have a canal, nature; you can get peace of mind outside the city. I just like to be someplace where I know how to drive a car without navigation. How I say, no place like home? Something like that."

A Reflection on Asian Culture

UConn Health Pharmacist Tiana Tran shares an essay for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Growing up as a Vietnamese American, Vietnamese culture was perpetually ingrained into my home life. While both my sister and I were born in America, our parents made sure to include our culture in our childhoods. We were raised speaking Vietnamese and we spent quality time with our grandparents, which helped to solidify our language skills. We listened to Vietnamese music, played Vietnamese board games, and learned the history of our family. We enjoyed Vietnamese dishes nearly every day and celebrated Vietnamese traditions such as welcoming our departed ancestors home to eat dinner with us as well as colorful Lunar New Year festivities with family. As a result, my culture is very integral to my identity and I am proud of who I am.

Today, my family and I still perpetuate these traditions; just this February, my family got together and celebrated Tết, the Lunar New Year, in our own special way. I feel very grateful that my family and my culture are so present in my life.

A large part of my culture, and most East Asian, Southeast Asian, and South Asian cultures, revolves around community and family. In the spring, we celebrate Tết with our loved ones. We welcome the new year, full of new beginnings and good fortune, with our community. The celebrations are a chance for everyone to become closer and for communities to get together. It’s a chance for us to appreciate our roots, pay respects to our ancestors, and share well wishes for the new year with our loved ones.

With May’s arrival and spring in full bloom, I reflect upon the community I am a part of at UConn Health, and the immense pride I feel for working in and with a health system that truly cares for everyone. I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have received that allowed me to contribute to the health care system as a pharmacist. This spring, I reflect on my identity and my culture, and how I am so proud of my heritage because it has made me the person I am today.

This May, I reflect on my roots, how my loved ones, my ancestors, and my culture have led me to where I am now. To everyone who has Asian or Pacific Islander heritage, I am so proud to see us represented at UConn Health, where we work together to cultivate a community of care in our health care system.

And to everyone in general, I invite you to do the same and reflect on your roots, and how they have led you to where you are today. Happy Asian American Heritage Month!

Tiana Tran, Pharm.D., is a 2022 graduate of the UConn School of Pharmacy. She completed her pharmacy residency at UConn Health a year later, and started as a staff pharmacist at UConn Health last August.

In ‘West Side Story,’ My Mother Saw a Latina Who Could Dance Her Way Out of Any Script

visit my grandparents essay

By Deborah Paredez

Professor Paredez is the chair of the writing program at Columbia and the author of the forthcoming “American Diva.”

Some Latina mothers teach their daughters how to spoon masa or plátano onto a corn husk or banana leaf when making tamales or pasteles.

My Latina mother taught me to love musicals.

Or, more precisely, how to worship the diva at the center of a musical, the woman pulling at the seams of its tidy romance plot, unraveling in her wake a trail of delight and mayhem. Some days it was Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice in her mink hat and muff insisting that no one rain on her parade. Or Diana Ross easing on down the road. But most times it was Rita Moreno as Anita dancing her way beyond the borders of “Ameríca” in “West Side Story.”

In the decades since its opening night on Broadway in 1957, “West Side Story” has been the story, the persistent white fantasy of “Latinness,” that Latinas like my mom and I have had to reckon with. And yet my mom and I kept watching. Perhaps it’s because, like all musicals, “West Side Story” is a complex form of representation that revels in both its messiness and its marvelousness. My mother taught me to see in “West Side Story” not just the problems of brown-face makeup, but also the choreography of another Latina who could dance her way out of any script that sought to confine her or relegate her to a supporting role. My mother was showing me a diva who could move across these imposed limits. And who did it in a fabulous dress and heels.

It is not without a measure of sheepishness that I admit this now, long after the public and private conversations Latinos have engaged in about our vexed relationship to “West Side Story.” No doubt, it presents damaging stereotypes of “Latin” culture in America. Many of us have cataloged and condemned the musical’s depictions of criminal youth and blatantly sexual women all speaking in exaggerated accents.

Musical divas like Ms. Moreno helped my mother and me forge our bond as we made our own way in America from our working-class neighborhood in San Antonio, Texas, a city that has long had a Latino majority. “West Side Story” endures as a paradoxical — and often pleasurable — cultural text by which many Latinos have come to know ourselves and one another. Artists and thinkers like Lin-Manuel Miranda , Justice Sonia Sotomayor of the Supreme Court and Jennifer Lopez , to name a few, have turned to the musical as a means of understanding themselves or as a jumping-off point into a new narrative.

According to my mom, the first time we watched the 1961 film adaptation of “West Side Story” together was when NBC aired it over two successive nights in March 1972. I was a little more than a year old. In those days, she and I were sharing a bed in the front room of my grandparents’ house on San Antonio’s south side. My father was fighting in Vietnam. I spent countless nights in the years that followed curled up in bed with my mother singing along to “West Side Story.”

We learned every line, every lyric. We scoffed at the brown-cake makeup. Rolled our eyes at the accents. We believed that, yes, a boy like that could kill your brother. We cried every time Bernardo died. We cursed. We crooned. We held our breaths when Anita’s purple petticoat flared, her leg kicked up and stretching to forever, to the smattering of stars above, to some beyond somewhere far from here.

In “West Side Story,” Rita Moreno doesn’t just master the notoriously exacting rigors of Jerome Robbins’s choreography. She expresses undisciplined delight in her body’s movement beyond it. In Ms. Moreno’s mauve-blurred movements as Anita there is both a sense of well-rehearsed control and improvisatory curve, a sense of what my mother would call “movidas,” of finding a way when there seems to be no way, of creating space where none is ceded. Movidas are not just ways of making do but making do with Latina flair, of hustling so smoothly it becomes dancing.

Rita-as-Anita refuses to move in a straight line — and why should she when the playing field is so full of obstacles? Latinos know there are few straightforward paths toward securing a place for ourselves; the only constant is the well-rehearsed control and improvisatory curve and sartorial flair and audacious joy we perform in our movidas. We recognize in Anita’s movements the choreographies of our own refusals and striving for self-possession.

Again and again I saw in the film how Anita tends fiercely to Maria, the teenager left in her charge. Just as I joined my mother in bed to watch and cry and sing along, Anita joins Maria on her bed to sing the duet “A Boy Like That/I Have a Love.” It’s a pivotal moment when Anita, despite her own reservations, romantic attachments and aspirations, sacrifices herself to help Maria try to achieve what she wants. Anita and Maria are the only couple central to the narrative who survive.

My mother taught me to memorize the steps and the songs in a musical diva’s repertoire. Together, we studied the ways Rita-as-Anita moves across the battered gymnasium floor, across the rooftop, across the boundaries of turf and tribe. She showed me how to follow the diva who shows Latinas how to move and move and keep on moving, how to move until the skirts of our dresses achieve liftoff, how to move past the violence done to our bodies and our boyfriends, how to move closer to one another across the borders that seek to keep us apart.
