Your indirect competitors are those who fulfill a different need for the same target market, or those who fulfill the same need for a different target market. An example of an indirect competitor could be a nearby coffee shop.

In your plan, name and describe your direct competitors individually, and explain what sets your bakery apart from them. Create a more general category for your indirect competitors and discuss them as a whole.

Finally, detail your areas of competitive advantage and what will make you distinct. Most successful bakery owners identify products that no other local bakeries offer, such as a treat that is exclusive to your bakery and that drive customers to frequent your store. Also, based on the demographics and psychographics discussed above, you may be successful being the only local bakery selling nut-free cakes, or making vegan and gluten-free baked goods with local and organic ingredients.  

Marketing Plan

Your bakery marketing plan explains how you will penetrate your target market, based on the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion.

The Product section explains all the products and services your bakery will provide. Price refers to the price points at which you will sell each item, along with your reasoning for choosing those prices. Place explains all your distribution methods, such as your retail stores, your company website, and third-party retailers. Promotion defines the ways you will entice customers to purchase your baked goods, such as free samples and web advertising.

In addition to describing the four Ps your bakery marketing strategy, you should explain how you will retain existing customers through loyalty programs or other methods. Also, in this section of your plan, particularly if you are startup retail bakery, you should detail the design and display of your location.

Clearly, your bakery’s storefront should be designed in a way that attracts walk-in customers. Consult an interior designer to get insight on how to create a warm and inviting ambience in your bakery.

Operations Plan

The operations plan explains the processes by which you will turn your vision into a reality. It includes the everyday short-term processes involved in physically baking your products, managing your retail space, packaging your baked goods, conducting sales transactions, choosing and working with vendors, and delivering the finished products to your customers among others.

Your operations plan must also include the long-term processes involved in growing your company, such as introducing new products or retail stores, achieving specific sales milestones, and hitting other important business-oriented goals such as hiring new employees, launching new locations, etc.  

Management Team

This section provides biographies of the key members of your company’s management team, with an emphasis on strong business skills. Focus on educational background, previous experience with successful start-ups, and other elements that demonstrate your and/or your team’s ability to build a company. A strong advisory board can help make up for weaknesses provided you clearly articulate how your advisors will directly impact the company’s growth.

Financial Plan

The financial plan is often the most difficult part of the business plan to write, yet it is the section that potential investors and lenders spend the most time analyzing.

Provide a list of all revenue streams, including their relative importance and timeline for implementation, as well as the amount and expected sources of outside funding. Include a summary of past (if applicable) and projected Income Statements, Balance Sheets, and Cash Flow Statements. The assumptions made in these documents must be reasonable and verifiable based on an analysis of similar companies.

Make sure you don’t miss anything when putting together your financial projections or you could lose credibility in the eyes of readers of your plan. For example, make sure you adequately enter costs which most bakeries incur such as space (owned or rented), equipment (planetary mixers, cylinders, gas stove, cooling fridge, deep fridge, storage utensils, etc.), electricity and water, staff, furniture and décor, licenses, insurance and legal fees.  

The appendix includes your full financial projections, as well as any other documentation that supports the claims made in the business plan. For example, it might include a list of key existing customers or letters from potential partners. Likewise, if you’re a startup bakery, including sketches of the proposed store design should appear in your appendix.

The industry or market analysis is an important component of a bakery business plan. Conduct thorough market research to determine industry trends and document the size of your market.

Competitive Analysis

Marketing Plan

This part of the business plan is where you determine and document your marketing plan. . Your plan should be clearly laid out, including the following 4 Ps.

  • Product/Service: Detail your product/service offerings here. Document their features and benefits.
  • Price: Document your pricing strategy here. In addition to stating the prices for your products/services, mention how your pricing compares to your competition.
  • Place: Where will your customers find you? What channels of distribution (e.g., partnerships) will you use to reach them if applicable?
  • Promotion: How will you reach your target customers? For example, you may use social media, write blog posts, create an email marketing campaign, use pay-per-click advertising, launch a direct mail campaign. Or you may promote your bakery business via word-of-mouth.

Operations Plan

This part of your bakery business plan should include the following information:

  • How will you deliver your product/service to customers? For example, will you do it in person or over the phone only?
  • What infrastructure, equipment, and resources are needed to operate successfully? How can you meet those requirements within budget constraints?

The operations plan is where you also need to include your company’s business policies. You will want to establish policies related to everything from customer service to pricing, to the overall brand image you are trying to present.

Finally, and most importantly, in your Operations Plan, you will lay out the milestones your company hopes to achieve within the next five years. Create a chart that shows the key milestone(s) you hope to achieve each quarter for the next four quarters, and then each year for the following four years. 

Examples of milestones for a bakery business include reaching $X in sales. Other milestones could include adding new products/services, opening additional locations, or increasing employee headcount.

Management Team

List your team members here, including their names and titles, as well as their expertise and experience relevant to the foodservice industry. Include brief biography sketches for each team member.

Particularly if you are seeking funding, the goal of this section is to convince investors and lenders that your team has the expertise and experience to execute on your plan. If you are missing key team members, document the roles and responsibilities you plan to hire for in the future.

Financial Plan

Here you will include a summary of your complete and detailed financial plan (your full financial projections go in the Appendix). 

This includes the following three financial statements:

Income Statement

Your income statement should include:

  • Revenue: how much revenue you generate.
  • Cost of Goods Sold: These are your direct costs associated with generating revenue. This includes labor costs, as well as the cost of any equipment and supplies used to deliver the product/service offering.
  • Net Income (or loss): Once expenses and revenue are totaled and deducted from each other, this is the net income or loss

Balance sheet.

Include a balance sheet that shows your assets, liabilities, and equity. Your balance sheet should include:

  • Assets : All of the things you own (including cash).
  • Liabilities : This is what you owe against your company’s assets, such as accounts payable or loans.
  • Equity : The worth of your business after all liabilities and assets are totaled and deducted from each other.

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river. 

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

  • East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
  • Completed in 2017
  • Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

  • South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
  • Completed in 2015
  • Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

  • 339m tall, 75 floors
  • Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

  • Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
  • Completed in 2009
  • Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

  • Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
  • Completed in 2007
  • Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

  • 255m tall, 54 floors
  • Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

  • 239m tall, 60 floors
  • Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.

Park Krasnaya Presnya: This park belonged to the Studenets estate of the Gagarin princes. It is a monument of 18th and 19th century landscaping, with Dutch ponds, ornate bridges, and tree-lined alleys. There are also sports facilities, sports equipment rental, and cafes.

For instance, don’t spend too much time on the products and services section of your business plan if you’re writing it to determine how to market your business. Just include the sections that are relevant to your situation.

Here’s an example of a nail salon business plan outline. Just remember that your business plan might have different sections. It’s all about what you need for your business.

The executive summary is essentially your nail salon’s opening pitch. 

It shouldn’t be more than 1-2 pages, and should be written last, despite going first in the plan. Just outline the objective of your business, and your mission. 

Are you focused on intricate nail art, speedy manicures, or a luxurious spa-like experience? 

Then, describe the issue you solve for clients and your unique value proposition — the factor or factors that make you different from the competition. Some examples include:

  • A unique combination of services
  • An emphasis on naturally made products
  • Partnerships with other beauty service providers (hair, makeup, etc.)

The executive summary is all about being concise, but capturing the reader’s interest so that they’ll want to read more.

Products and services

The products and services section is all about detailing your revenue streams. Start with your core nail services. Maybe you offer:

  • Gel/acrylics

Once you’ve written down the basics, expand to emphasize any unique offerings, such as:

  • Intricate designs
  • Complementary services like aromatherapy
  • Plant-based ingredients

You should mention any retail products you plan to sell, such as:

  • Nail polishes
  • Nail care kits
  • Hand creams.

These are potentially additional revenue streams for your business. Use the products and services section to focus on your unique value proposition . Maybe you’re known for your eye-catching nail designs, or have partnerships with complementary businesses like hair salons. Anything that contributes to your sales and profitability is worth including.

This is where you get to know your target market and your competition. What’s the size of the nail salon market in your area? Can your customers be grouped factors like:

  • Spending habits

The market analysis section should outline the specific groups in your community that you aim to serve, such as working professionals, students, or individuals seeking luxury treatments.

If you’re already running a nail salon, you likely have a sense of your customer demographics. But studying industry trends (like the growing demand for natural nail care) and whether they can help you understand how your customers’ motivations and desires might change over time.

Use your business plan to compile that research, and zero in on the demographics and desires of your perfect client . Maybe they’re:

  • Busy professionals seeking quick lunchtime manicures
  • Trend-conscious teens and young adults
  • Parents looking for some relaxation

You should also scout out your competition . List other nearby salons in your plan, noting their strengths and weaknesses. How will you stand out and win customers over?

Marketing and sales plan

The marketing and sales plan describes your strategies to turn your target market into paying clients.

Start by detailing your strategies to reach customers. 

We recommend you prioritize social media channels , as they’re a major driver for the beauty industry. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram are ideal for showcasing your nail work. 

Other marketing tactics to consider include:

  • Partnerships with local businesses
  • Loyalty programs for returning customers
  • Incentives for customers who bring friends to your business 

Whichever marketing channels you choose to invest in, remember that your market research and unique value proposition should inform the content you put out to entice consumers. 

For instance, if most of your customers are working professionals, determining other businesses they frequent and seeking our partnership opportunities with them could be a valuable approach. But if your clients are mostly high school and college students, you’re most likely to be successful with an engaging social media campaign.

Make sure to track the results of your marketing efforts as well, so you know which strategies are paying off.

Company Overview

The company overview is where you highlight your team and business history. (If you aren’t seeking a loan or investment, you can likely skip this section).

Outline your business structure . Are you a:

  • Sole proprietor
  • Partnership
  • Corporation

Then, highlight your team. Even if it’s just you, summarize your experience and any special certifications you hold. If you have key employees like nail salon technicians, a manager, or an administrative assistant, list their experience and skills. And if you plan on hiring, briefly mention the skills you’ll be looking for in future team members.

If you already have customers or brand partnerships, mention them in this section as well.

Financial Plan

The financial plan is all about deciding how successful your business can be. You’ll need a few things:

Sales Forecast : How much do you realistically expect to bring in each month? Consider the average price of services and how many clients you can serve.

Profit and Loss (P&L) : This lists your income minus expenses. Don’t forget things like rent, nail polish, and staff salaries.

Cash Flow Statement : This shows when money comes in and goes out, which is crucial for managing bills.

Startup Costs : If you’re seeking a loan, itemize costs like salon equipment, initial inventory, and any renovations.

Detail the assumptions behind your profitability and starting capital projections to provide clarity on your market analysis and expectations. Also, outline any potential risks, such as economic downturns affecting discretionary spending. And if you’re seeking funding, outline here how you will use those funds to support your business operations.

This optional section is where you include extra materials that strengthen your main points, but don’t fit in the actual plan. 

Maybe you surveyed customers about their preferences for a new product line, or researched the demographics of your neighborhood online. 

Include those reports in the appendix, if you think anyone reading the plan will benefit from the additional information. 

Remember, only include items that truly add value to your plan.

After completing my first year of teaching 8th-grade English at a private school , I was happy to have survived. Teaching is hard; teaching 105 adolescents is even harder.

Not only are they navigating puberty and the emotional whiplash that comes with it, but they are working with an undeveloped prefrontal cortex, the decision-making part of the brain. They are also distracted by social media , screen time, and seeking the approval of their friends, which makes it more difficult to get and hold their attention long enough to complete an entire unit. But I managed to do it — one lesson at a time — over the course of a very long year. I was proud of myself.

The self-congratulatory buzz didn't last long, though. When I met with the school's principal for my year-end review, I was presented with a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) . I assumed it was code for you should just quit .

While I had worked as a teacher's assistant and part-time writing instructor for a few years, this was my first time managing a homeroom and instructing on my own. As I looked over the language of the plan — difficulty with classroom management, needs to establish clear classroom procedures, all students are not engaged in the lesson — I forgot about the lessons that went well, the books the students enjoyed, the tests that demonstrated a true understanding of the material.

Was I a horrible teacher?

The principal assured me that the point of the PIP was to improve my performance

Reluctantly, I agreed to the PIP — not necessarily because I thought all the statements were a true assessment of my ability, but because I knew some areas could use improvement. I wanted to show the school's administration what I was capable of.

In the summer between my first and second year of teaching, I took a few professional development courses, wrote detailed lesson plans, carefully curated a selection of books for outside reading, and mapped out a variety of seating charts.

When I returned that fall, I met the new assistant principal, Mr. White, who would serve as head of discipline — as well as my advisor. He'd make sure I was following my PIP. We set up goals based on the areas that needed the most improvement, which was predominantly classroom management.

Once a week for a few months, I would observe other teachers for one class period. Together, Mr. White and I came up with classroom routines that I began implementing immediately. I remember nervously standing at the front of the classroom and reading aloud the procedures for homeroom. I heard Mr. White's voice in my head amid the groans of students who couldn't believe they had to stay seated until the bell rang.

"By setting clear expectations and consequences, you will create an atmosphere where everyone will feel respected," the voice said. "You will have command of the classroom."

We reviewed my lesson plans and day-to-day procedures. We met weekly. Occasionally, I would find him in the back of my classroom. I'd be reviewing a grammar lesson on parts of speech, and I would look up to see him glancing at the papers on the students' desks or watching the slideshow I was nervously clicking through. There was never a thumbs up, a smile, or a you're-doing-a-good-job nod in my direction. Mr. White had the ultimate poker face.

So, my jaw nearly dropped to the carpeted floor of his office on the day he told me I passed and survived my PIP with flying colors. Beyond just meeting the goals laid out before me, I exceeded them. I had, he told me, become a masterful teacher.

The PIP helped improve my abilities as an employee

What ultimately helped me to improve as a teacher was receiving constructive feedback and meeting specific, achievable goals with the support of the assistant principal. I did become a more effective teacher.

I showed myself what I could do — in and out of the classroom. That was truly the greatest gift of all.

I went on to teach for a few more years before realizing that teaching wasn't for me, but the skills and confidence I gained in that classroom have helped me immensely in other professions.
