Details of the program

In the context of this doctoral program, each PhD student will be supervised by a promotor at both IÉSEG and KU Leuven.

No tuition fee will be charged to PhD students. They will be employed as “Teaching & Research Assistant” at one of the institutions, with a fixed-term contract and a monthly salary, competitive with other European research and academic institutions.

> The first year of the program takes place on the campus of KU Leuven and is only dedicated to courses. PhD students follow courses of the KU Leuven’s PhD program, entitled “Business Economics”.

> Courses are taught in English and have to be selected jointly with both co-promotors of the thesis, among different research areas such as finance, entrepreneurship and economics. Each PhD student has to validate 60 ECTS at the end of the first year.

> More information on courses available on the website of KU Leuven .

From the second year and until the fourth year of the program, PhD students share their time between writing their thesis and teaching courses on the campus at IÉSEG. They are expected to teach 100 hours per year, which means 300 hours for the three last years of the program.

1st year to 4th year

> PhD students are asked to participate to a certain number of research activities, such as research seminars, conference presentations and other activities required to the completion of their thesis. They should also file an annual activity report, submitted yearly to the doctoral committee of both institutions.

> PhD students should have one paper published in a peer rewed scientific journal within the four years of the program.

> They benefit from financial support from IÉSEG, to conduct their research and reach their research targets.

> At the end of the fourth year, PhD students defend their thesis in English to a jury, either at IÉSEG or at KU Leuven, which is decisive for the completion of the PhD degree.

KU Leuven's Department of Economics is recruiting motivated students to enter the doctoral program leading to a PhD in Economics.

The individualized doctoral program allows the doctoral student to devote four years to full-time research. The program ultimately leads to a doctoral degree and prepares the student for an academic career at a top university or a career as a researcher in a policy institution.

The Department of Economics is located on the Leuven campus of the Faculty of Economics and Business. Leuven is a historical and vibrant city in the center of Belgium. It is a twenty-minute drive from Brussels, the capital of Belgium and of the European Union, and less than two hours from Paris, London and Amsterdam.

Information about our dynamic and internationally oriented research department, its researchers, output and activities can be found at http://feb.kuleuven.be/economics .

Detailed information about the program, including admission requirements and placement records, is at http://feb.kuleuven.be/phd-economics .

Our renowned doctoral program in economics is usually preceded by a year of study in the Master of Advanced Studies in Economics (MASE) or an equivalent research master's program.

To enter the doctoral program immediately, students must have successfully completed a research master's degree in economics or in a closely related field (e.g., finance, econometrics,...) by September 2023.

However, if you have yet to complete a research master's degree, you are equally invited to apply for this vacancy. In fact, we are offering some MASE scholarships to the most promising candidates for the Master of Advanced Studies in Economics at KU Leuven. Learn more about the MASE program and how to register at: http://feb.kuleuven.be/mase .

Successful PhD applicants will be offered a fully funded position in the doctoral program. We will contact a selection of candidates by the end of February.

The academic year begins on September 25, 2023, but there is some flexibility to start earlier if desired.

The position is for up to 4 years, with an annual review of research progress and performance. As a PhD student, you will receive a stipend of at least €2,420 per month (net of taxes) with full health insurance.

During these four years, you will conduct independent research under the supervision of one or more faculty members. The topic(s) will be determined in collaboration with your supervisors.

Interested?

You can apply for this job no later than January 31, 2023 via KU Leuven's online application tool .

ASMF Seminar: Rodrigue Kazzi (KU Leuven & UCLouvain)

'Model uncertainty assessment for unimodal right-skewed distributions'

Decisions such as setting premiums or capital requirements (Basel IV, Solvency II) are driven by risk measures of the portfolio loss distributions. However, the inherent uncertainty in the adopted model can lead to significant changes in the value of a risk measure. A common way to assess this uncertainty is to determine the upper and lower risk bounds, that is, the largest and smallest possible values the risk measure can reach over a set of models that satisfy certain distributional assumptions. The literature has so far offered risk bounds that may be deemed impractical for many actuarial applications. This impracticality arises because either a limited set of distributional assumptions are considered – leading to overly wide risk bounds – or some assumptions are difficult to trust, rendering the bounds unsuitable for many scenarios of interest. In this talk, we aim to derive risk bounds encompassing a broader set of distributional assumptions pertinent to actuarial modelling. The assumptions considered regarding the shape of loss distribution include unimodality, right-skewness, and symmetry following a concave transformation (e.g., log transformation or some power transformations) to the loss distribution. We also allow for the inclusion of additional assumptions about the loss distribution, including the moments, the range of potential loss values, moments on the distribution following a concave transformation, quantile-based information (e.g., knowledge of a particular quantile or the interquartile range), and trimmed moments, among others. While the primary focus of the talk is the risk bounds for the (Range) Value-at-Risk, we also show how to calculate bounds for several other measures, including expected utilities and probability inequalities. The new risk bounds allow for a wide range of distributional assumptions to be incorporated, leading to significantly tighter bounds than the ones in the literature. The findings are illustrated using real-world datasets.
