Childhood Studies Personal Statement
Children should have somebody that believes in them and supports them to become the person that they aspire to be. Working with children and assisting them in achieving their goals in life is a huge ambition of mine. I enjoy interacting with children on their own level; gaining insight into their perception of the world.
I am currently studying A-levels in Sociology, Philosophy and Ethics and an AS in textiles. These A levels not only equip me for academic life at university but also developed my understanding of early childhood educational studies. Two of the topics of my sociology A-level are dedicated to education and childhood. These topics have given me an understanding of how childhood is not the same for every child because everyone comes from a different background. This is called a social construction. Sociologist Sue Palmer says there are five important things that children need during their childhood. These are play, language, love, education and discipline. Philosophy and Ethics has reconfigured my perception of the universe because it has improved my analytical skills, seeing events form more than one perspective. Studying Textiles has made me improve how I manage my time as it involves me doing practical and theoretical skills for my coursework. This is useful when it comes to having to do work placements with my degree at university. Textile has enhanced my creativity by thinking of different textiles techniques to add to my coursework. People who are involved with working with children will have to think about things from a child’s perspective and need to be creative at solving problems so that the children can understand more easily.
My interest in teaching children developed through my work experience at a local nursery. This involved me providing support to children with mathematics, reading and writing on a one to one and class group basis. I ensured that the pupils that I supported were able to engage in learning and stay on task during the lesson.
I have volunteered at QMC Hospital Nottingham in the adult ward for the last 3 months: providing help and assistance to patients at mealtimes. I interacted with numerous members of patients and staff. This had led to my understanding of the importance of basic routine tasks in a hospital to support patients in creating a sense of stability. I learned quickly how to deal with people who were reliant on me for help. Volunteering is one of the things that I can really do for other people and putting them first. I have also gained knowledge and experience on how to safeguard and promote the welfare of the vulnerable elderly. I have also been involved with Young Enterprise scheme. I had leadership responsibility for marketing and advertisement. My skills in marketing were developed through promoting my brand through talking to the public. These work experiences develop my communication skills. I can now speak clearly, thoughtfully and without feeling nervous.
In 2015, I undertook a voluntary work placement in Tanzania where I supervised a group of children aged between 3 and 5. This is where I discovered that I had a flair for building a good rapport with children without compromising my position of authority. Working with children at those ages is a real critical point of development in their life because given the right opportunities they can develop new skills of understanding the world.
In the future, I aim to work with children. My experiences tell me that this work will be enormously rewarding. I feel the rewards of a professional career in teaching would satisfy the goals I have hoped to achieve for quite a while. I believe that with my enthusiasm, positive attitudes and strong interest in study your course will give me a firm foundation on which I can build my career, working with children. I can think of no better or more satisfying path to pursue.

I aspire to work with kids in the future, so having a deeper understanding of their needs and experiences is invaluable. Through my previous coursework and volunteer experience, I have developed an appreciation for how complex these processes can be. Additionally, research has shown that early intervention can play a significant role in shaping positive life trajectories. Thus highlighting the importance of this field of study. Studying at degree level will allow me to build on my current knowledge. At the same time, I’ll develop critical thinking skills, which are necessary for working with vulnerable populations.

I’ve always been very interested in education; ever since I was young, I knew that I wanted to get a degree in this field. Throughout my school years, I volunteered in various classrooms with students of all ages, which gave me valuable experience working with children and adolescents. Most recently, as an intern at a local elementary school, I was able to further explore my passion for teaching and working with youth. Ma master's child study and education.
I have always felt an affinity for children and had a general understanding of the immense importance of early experiences in shaping adult behavior. However my passion to study child-centered psychology was really fired during the second year of my undergraduate studies during the Child Developmental course. I watched a one year old child repeatedly throwing a spoon on the floor and observed the concentration and interest etched on his tiny face as he analyzed the relationship between the causes and effects involved. I was as fascinated by him and his reactions just as much as he was by watching the spoon arc through the air before it struck the floor each time. I realized that I was watching an experiment being successfully conducted by a tiny infant and felt enthralled as well as privileged to be a witness to it. I also understood that just as one care giver might consider this action in the same light as I did, another might regard it as irritating and pointless behavior and that this difference in understanding and attitude would have an effect on the child’s next ‘experiment’ and the results could be pivotal to the child’s whole future development and outlook. I was ‘hooked’ and a determination to study the subject was fired and I have not wavered in that decision since.
Another aspect of developmental studies that particularly fascinated me involves the dramatic effects on a child arising from the quality of his/her relationship with caregivers. The importance of security and consistency of care provision in the shaping of a child’s positive self image, promotion of emotional stability and consequent success in relationships, academic achievement and general well being can hardly be overstated, as has been demonstrated in so many studies. If we can persuade a sufficient number of deficient caregivers of the long term effects of their relationship and attitude to the child, we can go some way to improving society as well as the life of the individual child.
My interest in the subject has deepened in the time since I made my initial decision and I carefully read the latest published research on the subject. For instance I have just become aware of very recent research demonstrating that a child who has been bullied by a sibling is between two and four times more likely to be bullied in school. The role of siblings on child development has perhaps not been fully explored and is an area in which further fruitful research might be undertaken and I would love to be involved in doing so. I am also fascinated by the fact that the ‘nature versus nurture’ debate still continues. Though I tend towards the ‘tabla rasa’ theory, I remain open- minded and look forward to the day when research resolves the issue and we can see how practice can be amended to take account of the outcome.
I concluded, some time ago, that there were few subjects as worthy of study and research as developmental psychology. One of my life aims has always been to ‘add to the sum of human happiness’ and I cannot see any better way than by pursuing studies, research and practical involvement in this vital subject.
I have worked as a Research Assistant in the Department of Psychology at the University of XXXX and enjoyed the work very much. I understand that successful research requires particular characteristics such as intellectual curiosity, determination, diligence and an ability to maintain very high level of interest in the area of focus. I am convinced that I possess these characteristics and it is my long term goal to be a successful researcher in this field and to pass on my knowledge to others.
I am aware that cultural sensitivity and awareness is essential in this area of study and work. I have happily interacted with people of many cultural and social backgrounds since moving to Canada, six years ago. I have worked as a volunteer in various capacities to broaden my exposure to others, to learn more about my fields of interest as well as ‘giving something back’ to those less fortunate than myself. I enjoy being exposed to new cultures and enjoy sharing information about my own. I also possess a well developed sense of humor and fun that enables me to relate well to others and especially to children.
I have significant practical experience of working with children from a wide spectrum of cultures and social situations as a volunteer in Summer Camps, a playschool and by involvement in the ‘Peace by Peace’ project at the University of XXXX. This practical engagement with children of various ages, types and backgrounds has been immensely valuable and has strengthened my determination to work for their betterment. Among a few of the important things that I learned are: the need to treat each child as an individual and recognize that being ‘different’ is not necessarily problematic; the value of looking for the child who ‘hangs back’ and encourage them to become involved; the vital role of creativity and play in the learning process; and the importance of being highly observant and being sensitive to non-verbal communication and responding appropriately to such signals. Perhaps the most important fact that I learned was that each session was just as much a learning opportunity for me as for the children. The feeling of satisfaction gained when one sees a child grasp a concept or share a toy for the first time is truly immense.
I have carefully researched the available programs and regard that offered at the Institute is by far the ‘best fit’ for my purposes. I seek to join a challenging program in a supportive academic environment and wish to have the opportunity for a significant amount of practical experience. Naturally, I am also looking for an impressive faculty with a reputation for undertaking ‘cutting edge’ research. I am also interested in ensuring that satisfying and challenging employment is likely to be available to me once I have qualified. I believe that the program fully meets all these criteria. I know that there will be many well qualified applicants for the program but I genuinely believe that I am an exceptional candidate. I hold a degree in a relevant subject; I am an academically successful; I have research experience in a related field; I have significant practical experience of engaging with children; but my main recommendation is a genuine and heart-felt passion for helping children to realize their potential for success and happiness.

Early childhood studies personal statement example 3.
My interest in young children first began my niece was born while my sister was still living with us.
On a daily basis I would help care for the baby and I gained a large sense of my responsibility over those four years.
Due to this, I have had a growing aspiration to work with young children. I feel that the first few years of a baby's life need numerous positive role models.
I have chosen to apply for this course because I consider myself to be a very maternal person and I believe this work to be enormously rewarding. Therefore I am expecting to pursue a career with young children, preferably those aged from birth to 5 years.
I undertook work experience for Liverpool City Council working in the Planning and Building Control Department for a fortnight during March 2006. I carried out general administration including, filing, photocopying, faxing and answering phone calls.
I feel this has developed my organisational and communication skills. In addition to this, I enhanced my computer literacy by performing data entry tasks, printing, using the intranet and typing letters. This experience has helped me to work independently and to use my initiative when required.
Throughout summer 2008 I worked as a volunteer at Sefton Resource Centre for young people with disabilities. I worked with young children ranging from ages 3 to 8. I embarked on necessary training needed to care for the children in accordance to their disability and age. During this experience my sense of responsibility increased.
This was because I had to keep watch of at least two children who, because of their disability, had no real sense of danger. As well as this, I feel that I now have a greater amount of empathy for the parents because I had experienced only a few hours a week of their primary responsibility and their children's need for dependency.
I was assigned one child each day in which I was expected to take full responsibility for, this would be during trips to places such as the swimming baths and even when on site. Although I found this to be difficult on some occasions, I enjoyed it and I formed a strong bond with a fair few of the children.
I am currently applying for voluntary work experience for multiple other nurseries within Liverpool, those including The Little Georgian Day Nursery in the City Centre and put in another application for Sefton Resource Centre.
Since I can remember, I have always had an understanding of those with disabilities. My cousin has moderate learning difficulties which has a large affect on her mental age; I frequently visit her and find that I enjoy being in her company as she is a very optimistic person.
Furthermore, one of my close friends previously starred in a documentary for BBC 3's Beauty Season which was centred around society's perceptions of beauty, as she has lived with Apert syndrome she has experienced many feelings of seclusion and situations of negativity, such as bullying.
I found that these situations made her a stronger person and my friends and I have helped her through her recovery from over 20 operations. I have high expectations and a large amount of respect for her and every other person who suffers from physical or mental disabilities.
I was previously a member of Liverpool's Team Oasis at Greenbank Sports Academy in which I participated in performing arts activities, such as acting, dancing and singing.
From this I gained confidence and was able to improve my speaking skills, which has helped me speak in front of large audiences with ease.
This has proven to be useful when doing a school assembly for years seven and eight explaining the importance of recycling and keeping the environment green.
