Discover the finest writing contests of 2024 for fiction and non-fiction authors — including short story competitions, essay writing competitions, poetry contests, and many more. Updated weekly, these contests are vetted by Reedsy to weed out the scammers and time-wasters. If you’re looking to stick to free writing contests, simply use our filters as you browse.
Why you should submit to writing contests
Submitting to poetry competitions and free writing contests in 2024 is absolutely worth your while as an aspiring author: just as your qualifications matter when you apply for a new job, a writing portfolio that boasts published works and award-winning pieces is a great way to give your writing career a boost. And not to mention the bonus of cash prizes!
That being said, we understand that taking part in writing contests can be tough for emerging writers. First, there’s the same affliction all writers face: lack of time or inspiration. Entering writing contests is a time commitment, and many people decide to forego this endeavor in order to work on their larger projects instead — like a full-length book. Second, for many writers, the chance of rejection is enough to steer them clear of writing contests.
But we’re here to tell you that two of the great benefits of entering writing contests happen to be the same as those two reasons to avoid them.
When it comes to the time commitment: yes, you will need to expend time and effort in order to submit a quality piece of writing to competitions. That being said, having a hard deadline to meet is a great motivator for developing a solid writing routine.
Think of entering contests as a training session to become a writer who will need to meet deadlines in order to have a successful career. If there’s a contest you have your eye on, and the deadline is in one month, sit down and realistically plan how many words you’ll need to write per day in order to meet that due date — and don’t forget to also factor in the time you’ll need to edit your story!
For tips on setting up a realistic writing plan, check out this free, ten-day course: How to Build a Rock-Solid Writing Routine.
In regards to the fear of rejection, the truth is that any writer aspiring to become a published author needs to develop relatively thick skin. If one of your goals is to have a book traditionally published, you will absolutely need to learn how to deal with rejection, as traditional book deals are notoriously hard to score. If you’re an indie author, you will need to adopt the hardy determination required to slowly build up a readership.
The good news is that there’s a fairly simple trick for learning to deal with rejection: use it as a chance to explore how you might be able to improve your writing.
In an ideal world, each rejection from a publisher or contest would come with a detailed letter, offering construction feedback and pointing out specific tips for improvement. And while this is sometimes the case, it’s the exception and not the rule.
Still, you can use the writing contests you don’t win as a chance to provide yourself with this feedback. Take a look at the winning and shortlisted stories and highlight their strong suits: do they have fully realized characters, a knack for showing instead of telling, a well-developed but subtly conveyed theme, a particularly satisfying denouement?
The idea isn’t to replicate what makes those stories tick in your own writing. But most examples of excellent writing share a number of basic craft principles. Try and see if there are ways for you to translate those stories’ strong points into your own unique writing.
Finally, there are the more obvious benefits of entering writing contests: prize and publication. Not to mention the potential to build up your readership, connect with editors, and gain exposure.
Resources to help you win writing competitions in 2024
Every writing contest has its own set of submission rules. Whether those rules are dense or sparing, ensure that you follow them to a T. Disregarding the guidelines will not sway the judges’ opinion in your favor — and might disqualify you from the contest altogether.
Aside from ensuring you follow the rules, here are a few resources that will help you perfect your submissions.

After you submit to a writing competition in 2024
It’s exciting to send a piece of writing off to a contest. However, once the initial excitement wears off, you may be left waiting for a while. Some writing contests will contact all entrants after the judging period — whether or not they’ve won. Other writing competitions will only contact the winners.
Here are a few things to keep in mind after you submit:
Many writing competitions don’t have time to respond to each entrant with feedback on their story. However, it never hurts to ask! Feel free to politely reach out requesting feedback — but wait until after the selection period is over.
If you’ve submitted the same work to more than one writing competition or literary magazine, remember to withdraw your submission if it ends up winning elsewhere.
After you send a submission, don’t follow it up with a rewritten or revised version. Instead, ensure that your first version is thoroughly proofread and edited. If not, wait until the next edition of the contest or submit the revised version to other writing contests.

Penguin Random House Creative Writing Awards Submissions Are Now Open

PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE AND WE NEED DIVERSE BOOKS ANNOUNCE
THE 2022 CREATIVE WRITING AWARDS ARE OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS
Penguin Random House to provide $50,000 in scholarship awards to five unique, diverse literary voices of high school seniors from across the country.
New York, NY, October 1, 2021 — Penguin Random House, the renowned trade book publisher, and We Need Diverse Books (WNDB), a national grassroots organization that advocates for diversity in children’s literature, have opened submissions for the 2022 Creative Writing Awards. This is the first year the awards are featuring the newly named Amanda Gorman Award for Poetry.
The 2022 competition launches on October 1, 2021, and closes on February 1, 2022—or when 1,000 applications have been submitted. Current high school seniors who attend public schools in the United States, including the District of Columbia and all U.S. territories, and are planning to attend college in fall 2022, are eligible and encouraged to apply.
Five first-place $10,000 prizes will be awarded in the categories of: the Amanda Gorman Award for Poetry; the Maya Angelou Award for spoken-word; fiction/drama; and personal essay/memoir. In recognition of the Creative Writing Awards previously being centered in New York City, the competition will award an additional first-place prize to the top entrant from the NYC area. Established in 1993, the Penguin Random House Creative Writing Awards have awarded more than $2.8 million dollars to public high school students for their original compositions.

To celebrate the appointment of actor, broadcaster, narrator and writer Stephen Fry as the CA’s Honorary President for 2021-22 , we held a nationwide Creative Writing competition for writers and classicists of all ages.
We received more than 450 wonderfully creative and entertaining entries inspired by Stephen’s books ‘Mythos’, ‘Heroes’ and ‘Troy’ and these stories took us from ancient athletic festivals to dystopian quarantine prisons and a twentieth century Cornish mineshaft; from the Roman forum to a celebrity mansion via trenches, treehouses and temples; and from the peaks of Mt Olympus to a sofa in the Underworld! We have compiled a compendium of some of the most entertaining stories, which you can read and listen to here:
We were blown away by the standard of entries and the judging panel would like to extend their thanks and congratulations to all who participated. It was very difficult to narrow down the entries and draw up the shortlists from which to choose the category winners.
We are delighted to reveal the winners, and share their stories below. Please note that some of the Senior and Open category stories contain adult themes. Scroll to the bottom to see who was crowned the Overall Winner and to listen to their story, read by Stephen Fry himself!

The Overall Winner
We are delighted to reveal that the Overall Winner of the 2022 CA Competition is: Madeleine Friedlein
As Guest Judge, author Edward Hogan , writes: “ Fate’s Engine is just stunning. It cuts between a pit disaster in 1919, and the three Fates, as they spin, stretch, and severe the thread of life. On the one hand, it presents us with an act of heroism, but on the other, it asks us how much control we really have over our lives and actions. These are deep themes. The dangerous work of the early twentieth century miner is vividly realised, and in the mix of epic, poetic flourishes, and earthy detail, I heard an echo of one of my own local heroes, D.H. Lawrence. That said, it’s totally original. I’ve never read anything like it. There’s a unique artistic voice, here, and I can’t wait to see what this writer does next.”

Peter Bankov
We are thrilled to start this project featuring Peter Bankov, an exceptional designer who is as modest and down-to-earth as he is talented. Peter Bankov was born in 1969 in Minsk. He graduated from the Minsk Art College in 1988 and the Moscow State Polygraph Institute in 1993. He is the creator and editor-in-chief of [kAk) magazine, one of the key points of reference for Russian graphic design. Peter is also the founder and creative director of Design Depot in Moscow. He has received numerous international awards and has been a panel member for many contests around the world. His art projects are part of private collections in Moscow, London and Beijing. He is the author and presenter of a cycle of lectures on design, and lectures in Russia, the CIS and Europe.
Peter’s Answers
We asked Peter our “6 Poster Poster Questions” and this is what he had to say (watch the video to hear the answers from Bankov himself):
1. What does the poster mean to you and why do you design posters? For me the poster is important because it is laboratory of modern design. I think the most interesting thing for me as a graphic designer I have found is the difference between professional and non-professional, between beautiful and ugly, between street culture and museum culture, between the East and the West.
2. What would you say makes a good poster? Good poster is a non-standard plastic decision.
3. What do you think is the role of the poster on the world today? The poster can do without the modern world but the modern world can’t do without good poster.
4. What is your typical design process for making a poster? For me my poster art takes from 6-8 hours everyday.
5. If you could chose a poster in history as your favourite, which one would it be and why? The posters of an era of the Soviet constructivism: Klutsis, Rodchneko. Design of the Soviet money made Dubasov. In these works there is special beauty and real power.
6. What advice would you give to new designers who might want to become poster designers? It is necessary to work, trust yourself and not to be afraid. Graphic Design is an interesting area of human life. I believe graphic design changes the world for the better.
