change verb
To change is distinctively to make a thing other than it has been, in some respect at least; to exchange to put or take something else in its place; to alter is ordinarily to change partially, to make different in one or more particulars. To exchange is often to transfer ownership; as, to exchange city for country property. Change is often used in the sense of exchange ; as, to change horses. To transmute is to change the qualities while the substance remains the same; as, to transmute the baser metals into gold. To transform is to change form or appearance, with or without deeper and more essential change; it is less absolute than transmute , tho sometimes used for that word, and is often used in a spiritual sense as transmute could not be; "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind," Rom. xii, 2. Transfigure is, as in its Scriptural use, to change in an exalted and glorious spiritual way; "Jesus ... was transfigured before them, and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light," Matt. xvii, 1, 2. To metamorphose is to make some remarkable change, ordinarily in external qualities, but often in structure, use, or chemical constitution, as of a caterpillar into a butterfly, of the stamens of a plant into petals, or of the crystalline structure of rocks, hence called "metamorphic rocks," as when a limestone is metamorphosed into a marble. To vary is to change from time to time, often capriciously. To commute is to put something easier, lighter, milder, or in some way more favorable in place of that which is commuted ; as, to commute capital punishment to imprisonment for life; to commute daily fares on a railway to a monthly payment. To convert (Latin con , with, and verto , turn) is to primarily turn about, and signifies to change in form, character, use, etc., through a wide range of relations; iron is converted into steel, joy into grief, a sinner into a saint. To turn is a popular word for change in any sense short of the meaning of exchange , being often equivalent to alter , convert , transform , transmute , etc. We modify or qualify a statement which might seem too strong; we modify it by some limitation, qualify it by some addition.
Synonyms: alter , commute , convert , diversify , exchange , metamorphose , modify , qualify , shift , substitute , transfigure , transform , transmute , turn , vary , veer
Antonyms: abide , bide , continue , endure , hold , keep , persist , remain , retain , stay
Preposition: To change a home toilet for a street dress; to change from a caterpillar to or into a butterfly; to change clothes with a beggar.
A change is a passing from one state or form to another, any act or process by which a thing becomes unlike what it was before, or the unlikeness so produced; we say a change was taking place, or the change that had taken place was manifest. Mutation is a more formal word for change , often suggesting repeated or continual change ; as, the mutations of fortune. Novelty is a change to what is new, or the newness of that to which a change is made; as, he was perpetually desirous of novelty . Revolution is specifically and most commonly a change of government. Variation is a partial change in form, qualities, etc., but especially in position or action; as, the variation of the magnetic needle or of the pulse. Variety is a succession of changes or an intermixture of different things, and is always thought of as agreeable. Vicissitude is sharp, sudden, or violent change , always thought of as surprising and often as disturbing or distressing; as, the vicissitudes of politics. Transition is change by passing from one place or state to another, especially in a natural, regular, or orderly way; as, the transition from spring to summer, or from youth to manhood. An innovation is a change that breaks in upon an established order or custom; as, an innovation in religion or politics. For the distinctions between the other words compare the synonyms for CHANGE, v. In the religious sense regeneration is the vital renewing of the soul by the power of the divine Spirit; conversion is the conscious and manifest change from evil to good, or from a lower to a higher spiritual state; as, in Luke xxii, 32, "when thou art converted , strengthen thy brethren." In popular use conversion is the most common word to express the idea of regeneration .

Mark Luschini :
The referendum doesn't really change anything with the negotiations, i think after the initial knee jerk reaction, the majority opinion is that there is still a possibility of some sort of a deal that keeps Greece in the euro zone.
Kyle Kondik :
We keep waiting for something to happen during the Trump era to vastly change the way people view him, it hasn't happened yet.

A change in Happy New Era '' may happen only once in our life time, so it's a happy day, and I wanted my child also to be present at that moment, i hope this is a peaceful era where everyone can live with smiling faces.' . Elsewhere, couples wanting to register their marriages as soon as the Reiwa era began at midnight had lined up at government offices, which set special desks for the paperwork. Mark Dreyer :
The Games as a standalone event have been run very well, and Team China did well. The organization has been phenomenal, but again, it depends on what perspective you're looking at. Are you just looking through that narrow lens ? Because if you're looking at Team China as a whole, the narrative( from Team China) is much more about Team China using these Games for sportswashing... I don't think Team China's really going to change people's perspective on Team China as a country.

Change Can Be Good
National pundits typically underrate the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and this year is no exception. For example, despite their 9-4 2022 season and a majority of the offense returning, ESPN predicts State will only win six games and has them ranked at #32. Michael Bratton, of That SEC Podcast , sets expectations for oddsmakers. He ranked the SEC West in over/under terms for predicted wins. The Dawgs were ranked at 6.5 wins, last in the division, just behind Texas A&M, predicted by Bratton to have eight wins. What can we reasonably expect from Mississippi State 2023?
There is still hope for those MSU fans to prove those naysayers wrong.
The tragedy of Head Coach Mike Leach’s sudden and heartbreaking death last year might have been a catalyst of determination for the fans, and the state, but more importantly for the coaches and players.
But, a new spark seemed to emerge following their bowl win over Illinois. Especially in the way they did it. This was new head coach Zach Arnett ’s first game after being thrust into the position by the direst of occurrences.
There are many elements to that spark to give the Maroon-Faithful gleeful anticipation for the coming season.
We’ll take a look at some of those positive elements that have brought about a lot of change to the program. There will be subsequent articles going more in-depth about each of these elements, so consider this a teaser for things to come.
Meet the New Boss, Not the Same as the Old Boss
Arnett was arguably in one of the toughest positions a coach could be in. One minute he’s defensive coordinator to one of the best coaches in the country and the next he’s asked to be head coach following Leach’s death. All eyes from the fan base were now on him. What’s a coach to do?
Arnett stepped up, rallied his team, and won their New Year’s Day bowl game against Illinois, in a suck-it-up, win-one-for-the-Gipper fashion. For those wondering, State came from behind in the 4 th quarter, and scored 16 points to win 19-10. It was right out of a movie.
But after the last cowbell rang that night, Arnett was left with the daunting job of getting ready for the 2023 season. That means all the many things that come with being the head coach of a Power 5 football team.
Arnett takes it from a simple point of view, “I feel like I’ve got to do what I believe in,” Arnett said on SiriusXM. “You try to be someone else; it’s obviously going to come through as inauthentic and the players are going to read through that right away. But I got a chance to spend 3 years under, what in my opinion, is a first-ballot Hall of Fame coach. I mean the guy’s won every year he’s been.”
Given that frame of mind Arnett set out to make his own mark, but keeping some of the values he learned from the former head coach, Mike Leach.
Replacing Air Raid
Arnett and his Bulldogs had an impressive showing at their bowl game, showing a lot of character in their come-from-behind victory over Illinois.
But, Arnett was working with an offense and a team that was the design of Leach. This is next season we’re talking about, when some of last year’s players will be gone, and new ones arrive. Also, the coaching staff has shuffled due to a couple of key exits.
The answer is that everything is new, from the athletic director, Zac (with no H) Salmon , Arnett as head coach, and the other new kid on the block, offensive coordinator, Kevin Barbay.
Barbay brings in a new, more balanced attack with an emphasis on hard running combined with long passes. We saw a good example of what to expect in the Spring Game with Will Rogers returning. He threw the long TD completions to Lideatrick “Tulu” Griffin , along with hard-nosed running from Jo’quavious “Woody” Marks .
It would seem that Air Raid is a thing of the past, at least at Mississippi State.
Mississippi State 2023; A Promising Season to Come for the Dawgs
The Bulldogs have a lot going for them as they approach the new season. One advantage they have is the schedule for 2023.
State has eight home games and only four on the road. By means of this schedule, they play the heavyweights Alabama and LSU at home. Davis-Wade Stadium is even the site of The Egg Bowl this year. They’re on the road for South Carolina, Arkansas, Auburn, and Texas A&M. As a side note, Alabama has sometimes had problems when playing in Starkville. Maybe it’s the cowbells.
There is a veteran crew returning on offense including the record-setting Rogers in his fourth season. Returning up front is a veteran group along with exemplary skills guys like Griffin.
On the other hand, the defense is another story. The secondary was decimated. Four of the five starters are gone. Emmanuel Forbes went in the first round of the draft. Up front, the defensive line is still intact with five of their six players returning. Arnett should be able to shore that up considering he’s the one who put in the schemes 3 years ago.
It’s been a tumultuous, yet cathartic time for Mississippi State. Out of it there seems to be a new energy on the Starkville campus these days. It started with Leach and he seems to have passed that down to Arnett. Regardless, as with every new season at MSU, hope springs eternal.

I guess you could say college football is in my blood.
My brother, was a starting QB at Mississippi State and went on to be an SEC official for 30 years. He would let me tag along and I was on the sidelines for Auburn and Alabama games from the age of 12. You can't beat that!
As a journalist I covered football as a reporter at Birmingham’s Channel 13 when I was 20. I also got to go along as a spotter with the Auburn Football Radio Network. When I wasn’t reporting, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to shoot video on the sidelines at either Auburn, Tuscaloosa or Birmingham.
More recently, I was a featured columnist for Bleacher Report, primarily covering Auburn Football for the season of 2011.

‘Allah’ word use should not be debated openly, says PM

PM: ‘Allah’ issue should be discussed only behind closed doors
Any material that misleads muslims not allowed in johor, govt to streamline rules on use of word 'allah' before presenting to conference of rulers, says pm.
KUALA LUMPUR: The issue of using the word "Allah" should not be discussed or debated openly so as to not cause confusion among Muslims, says the Prime Minister.
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the decision to withdraw the appeal against the use of the word "Allah" and three other words was made after the matter was referred to the muftis and King.
According to him, the issue had been explained several times including in Parliament on the use of the word "Allah" which was reserved for Muslims in Peninsular Malaysia.
"Only Muslims in Peninsular Malaysia can use the word 'Allah' to avoid confusion and issues with other religions.
"Therefore other religions are not allowed to use the word.
"In Sabah and Sarawak, there is some relaxation to this, but with strict conditions, so that there is no confusion as well.
"The word Allah can be discussed, but in closed meetings.
"It should not confuse the people," he was reported as saying by Sinar Harian at an event in Shah Alam on Thursday (May 25).
Anwar said the government was still being accused of betraying the people's trust.
On May 15, the Home Ministry and the Malaysian Government were reported to have withdrawn their appeal against the decision of the Kuala Lumpur High Court which ruled that Christians could use the word "Allah" and three other Arabic words in the publication of their religious material for learning purposes.
On the rationale of withdrawing the appeal, Anwar explained that the Attorney General believed that the appeal was not in line with the decision made by the Conference of Rulers.
The Prime Minister said that he had referred the matter to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the King had advised him that all decisions must be in line with the decision made by the Conference of Rulers.
In the meantime, Anwar urged scholars to be brave and sincere in making reprimands in order to raise the dignity of Muslims and the country.
"Leaders need to listen and accept the criticism of scholars and respond to them," he said.

Title: interpretable word sense representations via definition generation: the case of semantic change analysis.
Abstract: We propose using automatically generated natural language definitions of contextualised word usages as interpretable word and word sense representations. Given a collection of usage examples for a target word, and the corresponding data-driven usage clusters (i.e., word senses), a definition is generated for each usage with a specialised Flan-T5 language model, and the most prototypical definition in a usage cluster is chosen as the sense label. We demonstrate how the resulting sense labels can make existing approaches to semantic change analysis more interpretable, and how they can allow users -- historical linguists, lexicographers, or social scientists -- to explore and intuitively explain diachronic trajectories of word meaning. Semantic change analysis is only one of many possible applications of the `definitions as representations' paradigm. Beyond being human-readable, contextualised definitions also outperform token or usage sentence embeddings in word-in-context semantic similarity judgements, making them a new promising type of lexical representation for NLP.

AI can help in the fight against climate change, but if it's not deployed wisely, artificial intelligence could mess things up more
- Scientists are exploring ways artificial intelligence could help respond to the climate crisis.
- There are ways AI is already helping the planet but the tech has to be deployed wisely, experts say.
- Failing to do so risks exacerbating the inequalities that a changing climate will itself drive.
- This article is part of Insider's weekly newsletter on sustainability. Sign up here .
Priya Donti thinks humanity will need artificial intelligence to help us avoid some of the most damaging consequences of a hotter planet.
Donti, the cofounder and executive director of the nonprofit Climate Change AI , studies how power grids can better incorporate renewable energy. She expects AI will play a part.
"It is hard to envision a future decarbonized power grid that does not fundamentally have AI and machine learning as a key workhorse there," Donti told Insider.
She said the question of AI and sustainability often gets framed as how AI can supercharge efforts to fight the climate crisis versus the technology's rapacious appetite for energy-intensive computing power . Donti said we should instead be thinking more about how to wisely deploy AI.
Questions around AI in general have been mushrooming in the six months since ChatGPT became publicly available, in what's now seen as a black swan event . The White House, for its part, this week issued a request for information on how AI might shape the nation's goal of halving greenhouse-gas emissions by 2030, among others.
In sustainability circles, there appears to be more attention to the ways the technology can give environmental efforts a digital assist.
AI can use satellites to look for poaching and illegal logging. It's being used by the United Nations and companies like Google to speed response times for and even predict disasters such as floods. A California startup called Refiberd is relying on AI-powered robotics to sift through discarded textiles with 95% accuracy so they can be recycled.
And there's an app that uses AI to predict when and where crop-damaging locusts might sweep across the horn of Africa and other parts of the continent. The app, called Kuzi , is named after the Swahili word for the wattled starling, which feasts on the insects.
Yet for all these wins, Donti said, AI also has been used to sell consumers more stuff and to help oil and gas companies extract more fossil fuels — work that the tech companies providing this computing horsepower have been criticized for.
Donti, an incoming professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said we need to add AI into the sustainability arsenal, though that doesn't mean the bots will be taking over things like operating the grid. Instead, Donti expects AI will handle some background processes, but humans will still be making the big calls about how something like the power system operates.
She likens it to humans steering a car down the street: Drivers are still in charge but modern vehicles automate many lower-level functions.
Donti cautioned that simply adding AI to an environmental problem won't necessarily mean it gets solved. And doing so could worsen a situation if spending on AI draws disproportionate funding away from something fundamental but effective like beefing up insulation in drafty buildings.
"AI is a really powerful tool for accelerating climate action," she said, adding, "It's not going to solve every problem."
There are also risks that AI could help the already powerful further consolidate their influence. An entrenched player in the energy market like an oil or gas company could use AI to help discover new caches of fossil fuels and keep prices low; that could make it harder for clean-energy competitors. Donti said AI has an "accelerating effect" that often lets an entity become more effective at achieving its objective.
"If you're now only having this technology that's more accessible to actors in society that are more powerful, it potentially exacerbates gaps because now there's a certain subset of people in society who can use AI and its multiplicative effect and other people who can't," she said.
Phil De Luna, a former director of the National Research Council of Canada and the author of a book on how AI can help scientists more quickly discover useful materials , also raised concerns about a fair deployment of the benefits of AI. He said it needs to be developed so that the people hardest hit by a changing climate — often those who are poorer or living in the Global South — can gain ground.
Even AI tools that are deployed with good intent risk exacerbating societal inequities, he said. For example, De Luna said AI could be used in regions where wildfires are common to determine where to develop firebreaks. Many homeowners could benefit, but if those tools aren't available to residents of poorer areas, those groups could suffer more.
"If artificial intelligence is used in sustainability to create moats and technology barriers and profit, then we will have failed in the actual purpose, which is to prevent climate change, and ultimately loss of life," De Luna said.
De Luna is most excited about using AI with laboratory robots to hasten the discovery of materials and technologies that could mean better batteries, new hydrogen materials, and improved systems for capturing carbon-dioxide emissions. Tech like solar panels and wind turbines took decades — far too long — to go from invention to widespread use, De Luna noted.
"We have less than 30 years to find and scale the next clean technology," he said. AI will prove essential to that. "It's the tool that we need, now more than ever, for us to reach our climate goals."
