My First Ever White Water Rafting Experience

I have been home quarantined in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for four months since our government imposed the Movement Control Order (MCO ) on 18 March 2020. During this lull, I scrutinised my bucket list and thought when this MCO ends, I’d do something extreme or even insane. With the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) declared to take effect from 10 June until 31 August 2020, I was over the moon. Interstate travel was now permitted. As I love nature, Kuala Kubu Bharu (colloquially known as KKB) in Hulu Selangor , came to mind. I researched online about its beautiful nature spots and what interested me was the hive of fun activities and adventure sports it offered. The item on my bucket list… WHITE WATER RAFTING!

Exploring Selangor Like A Tourist In My Own Country

I decided to travel alone and left Kuala Lumpur by car on Friday evening around 5pm and headed out to Tanjung Malim . It takes only an hour-and-a-half to arrive there. Since it was a leisurely drive, I arrived around 7pm. I checked in a hotel in Tanjung Malim, freshened up and took a short rest. By 8:30pm I went out to look for dinner and see what the small town offered. The hotel concierge had told me earlier that there was a variety of cafés some ten-minute walk away from the hotel. I found myself a packed local burger joint and I happily ate there. After dinner, I didn’t explore the vicinity as I was exhausted. I retired early for the night so that I can reserve my energy for tomorrow’s activity.

1. Setting My Foot For The First Time In Kuala Kubu Bharu: The Spot For White Water Rafting

Woke up to a beautiful Saturday morning. I left Tanjung Malim for KKB around 8:30am. The drive took only 20 minutes. I didn’t have time for breakfast but I did pack some snacks with me which came in handy later on.

As my car approached the meeting point for rafters along the Selangor River at KKB , canopies of trees lined both sides of the road. Immediately the beauty of the surroundings besotted me. My heartbeat went up slightly as I became excited with anticipation of what lay ahead in the day. I had no inkling what to expect of this adventure. The sight of 40 other participants calmed me down a little. I found out some were experienced rafters, others attending a company retreat, and me… it was my first time!

2. I Was Excited Even Before The River Rafting Began

The guides welcomed us and separated us into groups of six to eight people per boat. There was a total of eight rafting boats that day. Every boat had two guides each, steering the front and back. The guides briefed us on the safety procedures and reminded us to listen closely to their instructions. The experienced guides are ‘Orang Asli’, the indigenous people of the ‘Semai’ and ‘ Temuan ‘ tribes from the KKB area. Despite their lean physique, they are extremely fit and strong, and they move really fast in the water like acrobats!

It was only 10:30am, and the morning was bright and sunny. We were standing on higher ground and facing the river below us. My group of six people were instructed to carry our own rafting boat down the slope steadily and slowly. Our two guides also helped us with the boat, at the front and back. Carrying the slightly heavy boat itself was already a warm-up session to work up the sweat. All groups carried our boats in a single file to the river bank.

We stopped at the edge of the river, looking to our guides for what’s next, when they threw the boats into the river, you knew it was crunch time! As we boarded the boats, our guides made sure to position us based on our weight and size to balance the boat. If it isn’t balanced, it can easily capsize in the rapids.

3. One Mistake And I Fell Off The Boat

The water was surprisingly clear, I had expected it to be murky. The banks along the river are lined with canopies of untouched greenery. I was swept away to another world, when I encountered my first rapid!

I was preoccupied with the beauty and might of the water when we approached our first sloping rapids. The guide at the back of our boat yelled out “SIT IN”, and we as a team obeyed without questions, except for me. I felt like I was in my own world alone with ONLY the nature around me.

I was at the front right position and I was slightly standing. The boat moved fast. With one nudge, it crashed into the rocks. I tumbled and fell face first into the raging water. The current swallowed me under in a spiralling motion. Instead of gasping for air, I was frantically gulping down water.

4. Is This It?… Snuffed Out In A Drowning Incident?…

The strong current was rocking my body slamming it against the rocks. When I broke the surface, I clearly spotted a boat on my far right. I had to act fast. I consider myself a strong swimmer. Although exhausted, I mustered all my strength to stay afloat.

Then I quickly swam towards the boat, the guide held out his paddle and I managed to grab it. He caught hold of my life jacket and swiftly yanked me into the boat. The guides even made a joke out of me and cheekily asked, “How did the water taste like sister? Sweet?” Indeed, I was trembling in fear but I managed to laugh it off because it was amusing. Please do not make the same mistake like I did, be vigilant and mindful at all times while on the boat.

5. A Sigh Of Relief As We Approached Calmer Waters

As we approached the last rapid, our guides used their paddles to push our boat against the rocks below and intentionally capsized the boat as we descended into a slope. Merely for fun to end the ride in a memorable fashion. At this point the river was calmer.

Guides capsizing the boat at the last rapid

Despite calm waters, we were still safely fastened in our helmets and life jackets. It was a good thing too as we didn’t have much energy left to swim. It was actually very easy, just try to float on your back with your body facing the sky. We finally disembarked at our destination near the river mouth.

This was the most therapeutic moment on this day. The flowing river carried our bodies lazily as we enjoyed the view of the beautiful sky. The lush foliage around us was alive with the chirping of birds and crickets. Soon it was 2:30pm and we had come to the end of our destination. After hours of being on the boat and falling into the rapids, we were hungry. Our adventure package came with a meal of chicken rice and we ate to our heart’s content.

6. A Memorable Experience Indeed

The operator for river rafting that I chose was Xventure Mind . They have been operating in KKB for eight years now. I casually asked some of the employees how has business been. They stated that, “Since the MCO has been lifted, consistent flocks of people have been coming here for river rafting every weekend.” This is an encouraging sign of good news because people are yearning to breathe in pure air, and to be surrounded by flora and fauna.

According to the owner, Mohd Nassir bin Abd Rashid, 38, he shared with us that we don’t necessarily need to know how to swim to join the river rafting activity. Participants, however, must follow all the instructions and keep the helmet and life jacket on at all times. So for non-swimmers out there, do not fret, you can still join this activity and have a good time.

Xventure Mind will be having a special promotion for Espoletta readers starting from August 2020. Just flash this article to their personnel when you arrive on site and enjoy a special rate of MYR170 (USD40) per person for river rafting.

I Can Finally Check This Off My Bucket List!

Throughout this experience, it seems that rivers are like people. They all have personalities and traits that are particular or peculiar. One river may be gentle and mild, another tough and temperamental. No two rivers, or sections of the same river are alike. Each is different and worthy of exploration. I learnt that when it comes to river rafting, the rafters look forward for rapids and unforgiving falls. The rougher the waters are, the better. It seems that Kuala Kubu Bharu in the heart of Selangor is the lifeblood of extreme thrill seekers. Delivering nourishment and life to the habitat while also providing the best adventurous outdoor activities.

If You Seek Water Adventures, Then Don’t Miss This Unforgettable River Rafting Adventure

A big thank you to Tourism Selangor for approaching Espoletta. Thanks to your initiatives, I have now become an adrenaline junkie and I am looking forward to explore more activities in Selangor! Was I fearful of this river rafting? Yes. Will I ever do it again? Yes and in a heart beat! It was my first time exploring KKB and I have already fallen in love with the area. I will certainly return and do more activities!

Not a fan of the water? Then consider de-stressing yourself to achieve inner peace . Otherwise, come back for the next feature where we will explore different fun activities which involve jumping off a bridge! So stay tuned!

Would you try white water rafting?

  • Yes, I will do it only once in my life
  • No way, I'm not crazy to do this!
  • Maybe, it depends on my nerves
  • Yes and IF I like it, I will do it again!

I appreciate it when you shared that you have to sit in when the waves start crashing, since you might fall if you are slightly standing like what happened to you. I will keep that in mind to be alert and aware of my actions when my friends and I book a scenic rafting trip in Alaska. We plant to tick that off our bucket list this summer altogether.

It was most captivating when you shared that helmets and life jackets will keep you safe in white water rafting. My husband wants us to experience West Virginia white water rafting. I should advise him to go for it so we can have an authentic experience.

Whitewater rafting is an outdoor activity that involves riding on a raft down a river with rapids. It’s a great way to get your adrenaline pumping and enjoy the beauty of nature at the same time!

It’s an entertaining experience that anybody can participate in. While you may rent your own raft and start the experience on your own terms and times, most people prefer to go with an experienced outfitter.

Whitewater rafting is a great way to challenge yourself and have an adventure. It’s also a great way to bond with friends or family, as you’ll need to work together to navigate the rapids. And of course, it’s just a lot of fun!

Whitewater rafting is a thrill seeker’s dream. If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping adventure, this is definitely the activity for you. There are few things more exhilarating than hurtling down a river in a raft, dodging rocks, and navigating rapids!

Every river has its own set of challenges and circumstances, which change over time (the difficulties and situations may differ depending on the season). The presence of waterfalls and whirlpools, as well as the size of the waves, makes some rivers more difficult to paddle than others. As a result, river guides had to invent a system for ranking these elements.

The lowest rating is class I, which applies to rapids that move slowly and gently push a boat. Class I rapids are found in still water, which makes for an easy, pleasant paddle. The rivers in Class VI have waterfalls, tight canyons, and huge waves.

The majority of whitewater rafting journeys fall within the class II to IV range.

The American Whitewater Association devised the International Scale of River Difficulty, a standardized scale for evaluating the safety of a river or a single rapid.

The grades can be summarized as follows:

  • Grade I, Easy: A fast-flowing current with a few small waves. Swimmers are unlikely to be harmed.
  • Grade II, Novice: Primitive rapids with open channels; simple to avoid rocky and medium-sized waves. Swimmers frequently don’t require much help.
  • Grade III, Intermediate: Rapids with moderate and/or irregular waves that need some intricate maneuvers. Swimmers can usually self-rescue or receive some assistance in the rescue.
  • Grade IV, Advanced: The river is wild and powerful, but it is easy to predict. Precise and expert boat handling is required; Swimmers, on the whole, need group assistance, and the danger of harm is moderate-high.
  • Grade V, Expert: Swimmers must be in excellent physical condition, as they will be tackling some of the world’s most difficult rapids. Long, obstructed, and/or violent rapids with drops that need a high degree of fitness. Swimmers are susceptible to injury, and rescue is tough.
  • Grade VI, Extreme and Exploratory Rapids: Few individuals ever attempt these rapids.

Even inexperienced whitewater rafters may be taken through tough and high-grade rapids by well-trained professionals, although in general, Grade II and III rapids are the most secure and pleasant for both beginners and older children.

Grade IV and V rapids can be paddled by those with more experience or superior river skills and a hunger for adventure.

The grades present on the route may vary, and tour operators will inform you of the highest grade you’ll encounter during your journey and whether it’s suitable for you and your party. The majority of trips—whether half a day or 10-plus days—will generally have a variety of grades, and tour operators will let you know if the maximum grade is suitable for you.

The first thing you should know is that whitewater rafting is not for the faint of heart! It can be a very exhilarating experience, but it’s also important to be aware of the risks involved. That being said, as long as you follow the safety guidelines and are prepared for the challenges, whitewater rafting can be an incredibly fun and rewarding experience.

Orientation/safety meetings are included on whitewater rafting trips. You’ll get a safety briefing, get all suited up, and then board the boat. In some instances, you will be taken to the launch point first. Depending on how long your excursion is, you’ll go down the river for anything from one to six hours. When you book your excursion, you will be given a time frame for how long your adventure will last.

One of the best things about whitewater rafting is that it’s a great way to bond with friends or family. There’s nothing like working together to navigate the rapids and overcome obstacles!

Whitewater Rafting Lingo

Brush up on a few whitewater rafting lingoes before you go on your next excursion.

There are several different words that are essential to know. Although most whitewater rafting excursions require the assistance of a guide if you want to comprehend what they’re saying, here are some of the most significant phrases you should be aware of:

The bow is the front part of your boat or raft. You’ll need to know this when getting directions.

“Bump!” is a term used by your whitewater rafting guide when you’re on the river, soon before the watercraft hits a hard surface, such as a rock. If you hear this, it’s best to lean into the middle of the boat. Also, set the “T” of your paddle on the floor of the boat. When doing so, keep your hand over the paddle’s grip.

When paddling, you’ll hear your guide say “dig” or “hard forward, dig.” You’ll press the paddle blade deep into the water. When you do, you’ll reach the deeper current at the bottom. This is frequently required when traveling through larger gaps in the water.

What people most often search for when it comes to whitewater rafting. It’s a short but furious stretch of the river with obstacles that cause the boat to travel in a roller-coaster style.

An eddy is a location in the river where the current enters an obstacle, pushing water upstream or in the opposite direction. This is where rafters will slow down or stop fully. Eddies are a potential danger, especially if approaching at high speed since they can cause the raft to flip.

When facing downstream, the left or right of the river. You may want to keep this in mind when you’re on your trip and the guide points out animals, plants, or other fascinating things to see.

A rock garden occurs when the river has a section where rapids are produced due to rocks rising above water levels. Obstacle courses with rocks and boulders can be hazardous and difficult to negotiate. Some people refer to them as “boulder gardens.”

The term “enter” is used to describe the starting point of a river trip, and “exit” refers to where the journey ends.

If the guide yells ‘high side’, it means that you must leap to the side of the boat as swiftly as possible. The direction may also be described as “high left” or “high right,” indicating which side to go to.

There are a few things you should do to prepare for your whitewater rafting adventure. First, make sure you’re in good physical shape and have a basic level of fitness. Whitewater rafting can be quite strenuous, so it’s important that you’re up for the challenge!

Second, familiarize yourself with the basics of whitewater rafting. This includes learning how to paddle, how to navigate rapids, and what to do in case of an emergency.

Finally, make sure you have the proper equipment. This includes a life jacket, helmet, and wetsuit (if you’re rafting in cold water).

However, if you are going with an outfitter, they will supply you with everything you need and be able to give you specific directions on safety and the rapids you will be going through that day. It takes a lot of the stress out of the preparation when you go with an outfitter who can safely guide you through the experience!

There are a few important safety guidelines to follow when whitewater rafting. First, always wear a life jacket and helmet. Second, listen to your guide and follow their instructions. Third, stay in the raft at all times. Fourth, listen to the safety instructions before beginning your adventure, as your guide will instruct you what to do if you fall out of the raft.

You should be able to stay in the tube without falling out. The guides will generally keep you from falling out of the raft. Nonetheless, at the start of the trip, you will be prepared for what to do if this situation arises.

It’s critical to hold on and brace your legs for optimum safety when whitewater rafting. Your instructors will advise you on the best technique to stay aboard while whitewater rafting, but the best advice is to brace your legs as much as possible and grip tightly.

When you are not using a paddle, simply grip the boat as tightly as possible. When you anticipate what the boat will do when it runs into rocks or waves, and counteract them, you can reduce the chance of falling out.

There will be a question-and-answer page on your outfitter’s website that’ll tell you what to bring. On the day of your trip, contact them with any questions you have and put together whatever it is they recommend.

Since you will be getting wet during this paddle, you’ll generally need an extra set of clothing and towel, as well as food and drink, for after the paddle. You may leave them in your car or send them to the pick-up location on the shuttle.

Bring a strap with you if you wear glasses. If you have an adventure camera, you will want to make sure it is securely strapped in. Also, don’t forget to apply waterproof sunscreen before leaving!

What Should I Wear For Rafting?

Shoes with a heel strap or water shoes are permitted, but flip flops or Crocs aren’t as they are easy to lose.

When it comes to clothing, quick-drying athletic clothing and t-shirts are ideal. Wearing a bathing suit underneath these clothes is also a good idea because it will allow you to dry quicker after you’re done.

In chilly weather, virtually every location where there are cold water temperatures will also provide you with a wetsuit to keep you warm on your excursion.

A rashguard should be worn underneath any wetsuit that is provided for your excursion. If you don’t have a rashguard, consider wearing a bathing suit or boardshorts beneath your wetsuit. To keep warm, you want your wetsuit’s neoprene to be as close to your body as possible.

Sports shoes that drain well and can withstand being damp are the ideal footwear for whitewater rafting. You can wear water shoes, but having strapped sports sandals that will not fall off is most comfortable. You do not want to wear runners that will get heavy when wet.

Before you get in the raft, outfitters will instruct you. You’ll also be instructed once you’re in it. Sometimes, you’ll pull a canoe-style paddle, while other times, all you need to do is hang on! The guides have extensive experience navigating the rapids, even the more challenging stretches of water. They’ve done it many times before and know how to keep you satisfied and safe.

During a whitewater excursion, the rafters do most of the steering themselves. They’ll be using two oars, which will resemble a rowboat (only facing forward) and will handle most of the heavy steering. Sometimes, you’ll be given a canoe-style paddle to assist with, but it all depends on the stream, group, and outfitter. Your guide will let you know when to paddle and when to stop.

There are a few different sizes of raft, and the number of persons who float with you will be determined by the season and how busy the rafting company is.

The typical number of passengers per raft is approximately six to eight people. Larger rafts are available from some outfitters, which can seat up to 12 people.

There is no weight restriction for paddlers, according to numerous outfitters.

Kids as young as 5 years old are permitted on most outfitters’ excursions, although more difficult excursions may have higher age restrictions or a minimum weight requirement.

Non-swimmers will not be an issue for outfitters; they have previously hosted non-swimmers. Simply let them know before you begin and you’ll be fine.

This is one of the few limitations when it comes to white water rafting. Rafting may be done by almost everyone, with the exception of pregnant women.

Half-day excursions can vary. Expect to pay at least $100, if not a little more.

Also, do not forget to tip your guide! Good guides work hard to ensure that their clients are satisfied. Giving them an extra few bucks per person will be well-deserved!

There are many different rivers all over the world that offer great whitewater rafting experiences. Some of the most popular destinations include the Colorado River in the United States, the Nile River in Africa, and the Fraser River in Canada.

The most important thing to remember when whitewater rafting is to always follow the guidelines set by your tour company or guide. They are there to ensure your safety and will have the most up-to-date information on the conditions of the river.

It’s also a good idea to wear a life jacket and helmet at all times. And be sure to listen to your guide’s instructions carefully so you can stay safe and have fun!

Like any outdoor activity, there is always some risk involved in whitewater rafting. But as long as you follow the safety guidelines set by your tour company or guide, and listen to their instructions carefully, you should be able to enjoy a safe and fun experience.

From mid-spring until late-summer, most outfitters operate their season. When the rivers are at their highest and warmest, this is known as peak runoff. Of course, this depends on where you are adventuring in the world!

Whitewater rafting is limited by the water levels, so most companies operate between mid-spring and late summer. The water will be the highest and most beautiful in the early spring, although it will also be the coldest. That period of time won’t see a lot of people doing it. The water will gradually become warmer as the summer progresses, and the crowds will almost certainly grow.

Whitewater rafting is an incredible way to get your adrenaline pumping and enjoy the beauty of nature. Just be sure to follow the safety guidelines and listen to your guide, and you’re sure to have an amazing experience!

White Water is a descriptive essay about a journey on White water rafting.

Our raft is rocked violently was we crash into the raging current and lone rocks. We paddle at hard as we can to keep our craft from smashing into the jagged rocks along the shore waiting to devour us like a great white shark. Our adrenaline is pumping as it does for anyone experiencing his or her first White Water Rafting trip. A small trip to North Carolina with my family turned out to be one of my best-remembered experiences.

I push off from the shore and hop into the raft as I feel my shoe drag in the cold water and soak my sock. As I looked around I noticed that the scenery between in the valley was like that off of a postcard, cloudless blue sky, plant and wild life everywhere, it was amazing. Our guide, a short medium build size man with black hair, explained the procedures and rules to us as we lazily drifted down the calm of the river for the next fifteen minutes.

We were told we were going to be shooting through 3 major falls, between eight and twelve feet high, throughout our trip, which lasted the entire day, and in between we would be having our rest periods and many smaller falls. There were also three other families with us on our little venture along the white water in other rafts. As we drifted along, we talked with our guide to get to know him a little better and enjoyed the scenery, which stayed as beautiful throughout the trip. Our guide told us that we would be starting off our trip with one of our first major falls and that we would be approaching very soon. Before we rounded the bend to the falls, everything was silent except for the roar...

Persuasive Essay About White Water Rafting

An hour in and I absolutely regret my decision to go white water rafting. I went on vacation with my boyfriend Mitchell’s family to Colorado. We stayed in a large condo that was located in Colorado Springs. We had places to go every day and today we decided to go white water rafting. There was eight of us that went, Gene, Lori, Andrew, Mitchell, Shane, Jenna, Trenna, and I. It was an early morning, we had to get up at 6:00 am to drive to Royal Gorge Rafting . We packed into the minivan we rented and started the long drive. We got to Royal Gorge Rafting and I was beyond excited. We got all of our gear on, helmet, lifejacket, and water shoes, and were ready to go. You had to take a yellow school bus, which smelled like old leather, to get to the Arkansas river. My group and four other groups piled into the bus. When we got to the river, the river guides explained what would happen if we fell out of the raft . They also explained how to get people out of the river if it were to happen. I never thought I would have to worry about falling out. We stepped in the raft and started drifting down the river when Shane discovered water was leaking and there was bubbling coming from the side of the raft. We discovered there was a hole in the side and Lori started freaking out like it was the end of the world. Our raft guide sealed the hole with duck tape and we continued on down the river. The river split into two paths one took you to a waterfall and one kept you on the path to the end

Peer Pressure Satire

So I did it like 20 more times before finally resting up on the shore. As time passed by, it felt as if we spent the whole day swimming and jumping off a helicopter skydiving. Then the unexpected happen, my best friends Ivan and Nathan decided they wanted to get a go at the bridge. In my head, I knew this was not a good idea. The bridge was skyscraping, towering, mighty, I can’t even think of words to describe it. It was unmatchable and yet they want to jump off it. I tried to convince them not to, worrying that something might go wrong if they did. Quite frankly they didn’t care what I had to say and offered me to jump with them. I was already on the bridge with them and they were on the outside of the rails ready to jump. While all my friends are behind me they wanted to see all three of us jump at the same time. I was scared shitless. But being me I caved in and vaulted right over the rail and stood next to 2 of my best friends as we were about to jump a bridge. I’ve never been more scared in my life, looking down at my feet it looked like the people below me were ants. We stood there for a good 5 minutes contemplating on whether we should jump or not. The longer we sat there the worst it became, we were all trembling with fear. Both Ivan and Nathan had fear in their eyes like I’ve never seen before. I bet they were just as scared as I was. The sun was gleaming at all 3 of us as we stood there in shock and awe. But we had to man up and jump, so we did exactly that. The water was fragile, universe-blue-colour, making it appear like nature’s amphitheatre. At that very moment all 3 of us jumped, the air felt ice cold, it felt as if everything was statue still, like time froze on us. It was peaceful and comfortable, I have never experienced such a unique feeling. As we came racing down we smacked the water and plunged right for the surface gasping for air. It was a feeling that you can’t shake

Persuasive Essay On Hiking

Did you know that highly trafficked areas like Niagara Falls are best for solo hiking? Highly populated areas such as Niagara falls are exquisite hiking spots for novice hikers, even if someone is hiking a simple trail, it is pivotal that people are notified of the individual's whereabouts. It is crucial to communicate with family or trusted associates before you go on a hike owing to the fact that hiking alone can pose threats such as injuries, complicated weather, and dangerous wildlife.

Persuasive Essay On Surfboarding

Imagine you are at the beach. You are laying down a towel and setting up an umbrella when something catches your eye. Out in the ocean you see a surfer catching some waves, and it looks so fun and exciting that you almost grab a board and join in. However you don’t know how to surf and would rather not embarrass yourself in front of all these beach goers. Surfing, however, isn’t complicated at all and can be accomplished in these simple steps.

Persuasive Essay On Snowboarding

Waking up and looking outside, the snow is several inches deep covering the grass, the street, and the snow-banks are knee high. These are the perfect conditions, for one thing, snowboarding. A snowboarder knows the prime conditions to ride and will do anything to make sure they are on the mountain ready to go when those conditions arise. In preparation for snowboarding, you’ll need to consider the temperature, where you will be riding, and what type of gear is needed for the conditions.

Snow Tubing Essay

Ever heard of snow tubing? Snow tubing is like extreme sledding. You are in a tube, and you et plunged down a large hill. It’s is very fun, but also quite dangerous. You should never stand up on your tube, while going down. You should not have more than one person in a rube, and wait until the person before you is out of the way before you go down. Avoiding these risks will keep you safe, sand you’ll still have tons of fun. Down to go snow tubing, you still need to wear the right gear. You will need a heavy coat, socks, snow pants, a long sleeved shirt, boots, gloves, a hat, and a scarf. These will keep you warm. Depending on how step the slope is, you’ll need a helmet as well. Now go have fun!

Persuasive Essay On Climbing

“Why do you climb?” Four words; four syllables; one question that I’ve heard a countless number of times; one question that I never knew how to answer. (Antithesis) Climbing is a sport that is performed in most corners of the world; it’s objective is to develop and carry out a method of ascending a rock face, be it with tools, by hand, with protection, or without. For most people, it is a game to be played for the hell of it; for the majority, it is a social environment that connects people of all ethnicities and ages; for some, it’s a direct connection to the beauty of the outdoors; for few, it’s a way of acquainting oneself with fear; for a minority, it is a masochistic drive; and for me, it is all of the above. Although all of these general reasons motivate climbers in their everyday ambitions, the source of their passion is as obscure as the virgin stone itself. From what I’ve learned, there are endless ways to answer this age old question, but three of them stood out the most: to find purpose, to find community, and to find what is elusive.

Lava River Research Paper

While rafting down the Chilko River, Ron Thompson, a seasoned river guide with thirteen years of experience, had his raft high side on a rock. When the raft high sided and all but one of his guests fell out into the river. Due to the strong rapids five of the guests died. This is a tragedy that should not have happened on the river considering it is not nearly close enough to being one of the major rivers in Canada. The problem of where this happened on the river, Lava Canyon, is about how long the rapids run. The water level was approximately 2 feet lower than it typically ran. With water levels changing, rapids adjust throughout the river. When the raft hit a wake it turned on its side and hit the rock that forced people out of the raft. Some of the people were able to swim for safety, including Thompson, but sadly five drowned.

Kaylee Plott Research Paper

I wanted to take that boat out and go tubing for the first time in my life. I was so excited that I even offered to blow up the tube by myself with nothing but my lungs, not knowing we had an air pump. Finally, after what felt like hours of begging like the annoying twelve year old I was, my dad said it was time to go. My sisters and I got our life jackets and wet shirts on, while my baby brother and step mom got on the boat, and my dad sat in the driver’s seat. My sisters and I were on the back on the tube, trying to find the best way to position our arms so we didn’t fall off. My dad turned the key to the boat and suddenly, my excitement turned to sheer panic. What happens if I fall off? What if my sisters fall off? What if there was a lake monster or a really big fish in the water? From that moment on, I was determined to stay on, so I held on to the handles for dear

Persuasive Essay On Lake George

Dealing with flooding has been an all too often occurrence, for those who live or work around the western suburbs of Chicago. Parking lots are often underwater making them unsafe to enter, and effectively shutting down the Schools and businesses in the area. Standing water can be found around every corner, causing roads to be completely barricaded off. I have personally watched cars floating down the street. Finally, the local residents and governments have had enough, they've reached a decision. One of the parks in the area will be torn down to make room for an emergency runoff pond. The chosen park to be torn down is named Armstrong Park, which includes the natural walking path park called Lake George. Adding the runoff pond will vastly improve the surrounding communities, this is the right and smartest move.

Personal Narrative: Catalina Island

We finally docked to our first destination, Catalina Island. Stepping on the island was so surreal, the air was so fresh, the island scenery covered in green, and the houses were unbelievably beautiful. A group of decided we wanted to go parasailing so we all chipped in and got tickets to go. Four of us, girls, and other passengers got on this speed boat and sped off far enough to catch good air for the parachute. A couple of people were ahead of us so we got to see what we were going to expect and hear the people's opinion on how it went when it was finally our turn to go up. Gisselle, my roommate, paired up to go together and we were very anxious. We both got geared up and the boat started going to get some wind. We got shot off the boat,

Persuasive Essay On Outdoor Education

Finding ways to keep students interested in schoolwork and increasing their cognitive abilities has been a constant struggle for teachers. It is common knowledge that when a child’s interest wanes, it becomes harder for them to learn and retain knowledge on the subject. One tool that can be used to combat this issue would be the use of an outdoor classroom or learning outdoors. During the late 60’s and 70’s outdoor education was highly recommended in curriculum guidelines to enrich educational experiences, but later declined in the 80’s (Eaton, 1998). Today, outdoor education only plays a small role in children’s education experiences, despite the benefits it could provide. Teachers should take advantage of outdoor education to increase children’s cognitive skills, provide physical and emotional benefits, and decrease the bio phobia many children seemed to have developed.

Persuasive Essay : Everyone Should Try Snow Skiing

I believe that every person should try snow skiing at least once. Snow skiing is a great activity with so many benefits, plus its really really fun! People of all ages can try it with the youngest person recorded being one year old. For me, skiing is the best sport out there and when I’m skiing it feels like I’m on another planet because everything is white from being covered with snow. Some days there is so much snow you can't even see in front of you. Those are the best days. It's such a great experience and I'll give you the motivators that keep me looking at the mountain peaks in July.

Zoom Brutality Experience

About two years ago and a twenty-one hour car drive later my family and I were in Colorado, and about three days after we got there my uncle, my dad, my brother, and I went to a white water rafting company and found our guide.

Persuasive Essay On Shark Finning

Throughout my life, I have always been a bleeding heart for animals. My dad would take me to the animal shelter and have to drag me out because I just couldn’t leave without saving all of them. The first time he took me fishing was a traumatic experience. I didn’t realize that the purpose of fishing was to kill and eat the fish; so when I reeled in my first fish and it died, I cried for an hour. My love for animals has still carried on in to my adult life and now I am learning about more animal cruelties in the world. The company that I work for are strong advocates for animal rights and are actively fighting animal testing. As a retail company, we have the opportunity to reach thousands of people everyday to spread messages and educate. We are always running ethical campaigns that fight for preservation and conservation of our Earth’s resources, ban various animal cruelties, and promote love and acceptance throughout the world.

Essay on Personal Narrative: White Water Rafting

I remember a time in my life not too long ago when my family and I went white water rafting for the first time. We had been spending some of our summer vacation at a cabin in the Smokey Mountains, close to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The next day we would experience feelings of exhilarating excitement, with a sense of suspense and anticipation as we rafted down the Nantahala River.

Descriptive River Rafting

water rafting essay

Show More Water is the ultimate contradiction. Its serene at times, while at others it wields devastating power. It is the source of all life, yet it can rip it away with one swift swell. For this reason alone, I find the oceans, lakes, and rivers offer such an array of enjoyment while it commands my respect for its authority. Water not only has the ability to drift from natural states, but it also brings pleasure and pain from its temperature. On a recent vacation I had the pleasure of experiencing white-water river rafting. River rafting provides a gaze through a cascading journey drifting along the seemingly still waters, the surging crashes of the churning rapids, and the deep dives over the falls that offers a totality of the sublime wonder and …show more content… Re-entry had two paths: jump in or walk further along the edge and then cling to a rope tethered to the rock along the river bed wall. Jumping required only 20 feet down precisely in the center of the river into 42º waters. A few chose to climb the long way around, while most of our crew leaped forth and braved the razor like sharpness of this frigid water. Oh how refreshing this splash was for all. It was very, very, very cold. Like falling into snow cold. Once all were accounted for, we persevered. No challenge would be left unmet. The suicide falls were approaching, so we practiced our fall-drop skills again and again through the rapids. What was quite amazing was the boiling nature of the water. The crests of the waves grew in places enough to swallow the oars and, in others, left gaps for the oars to catch only air. Subsequent to our attacking a Class IV fall (an advanced level known for its intense power and predictability), my father slipped into the hands of the river. We all gasped as we anticipated picking him up downstream. The river would not beat my dad though. Astounded at his resolve to beat this beast, he clung onto the boat with his feet deeply entrenched under the seats, and used all his might to hold the rope while his head was completely submerged. We all surged into action to rescue him and bring him …show more content… Our drift along the river encompasses the canopy of trees leaning into the channels, the occasional warm winds flowing through to warm our weary bodies, and the shimmering of sunlight dancing through the canopy. The light bounced off the pristine water. Clarity during the calmness allowed you to see each pebble and every little creature below the surface. It was truly spectacular to peak at these small wonders, while our main focus was to watch and respect the turbulent nature of the river. As we approach our final descent, we practiced our unity and form as the guide paid every attention to our moves to identify how we work to prepare his course of action to guide us through the treacherous slip into the river’s beckoning cradle. Rafters were ready for the challenge. Well, most were. Mom chose to not to chance a possible swim. You see, if you are tossed into the river, the falls take you under their churning tides after which you are spit out to swim hard downriver for a spell until the river relinquishes you. So, she was fine watching. Perched on the bridge, mom caught a glimpse of our crew as we braved the Class V (expert) plunge with high hopes, and dug our oars in with precision, over, and over, and over, until the command “dive in” was exclaimed. Subsequently, we swiftly maneuvered down into

College Admissions Essay: How Swimming Changed My Life

The bed mercilessly taunts my exhausted limbs to return but my determined heart persuades me to brave the trial by water once more. As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. Weeks of this pass by, all for the sake of being able to travel through 100 meters of water a few milliseconds faster. Swimming has been my primary sport since the age of eight.…

Roger Rosenblatt's Essay The Man In The Water

The weather and setting of Roger Rosenblatt’s essay, “The Man in the Water,” had a prodigious effect on one particular man as well as everyone else who was involved in the catastrophic January 13, 1982 crash of Air Florida Flight 90. Due to the winter season and the weather conditions, the water in the Potomac River where passengers landed was frigid. One courageous man stepped forward and began to save as many of the horrified and dying people as he could. Since the water was so cold, it adversely affected the man and his fellow passengers. Even though the man could have saved himself, he made the conscious decision to continue rescuing people instead of saving himself.…

Personal Narrative: I Want To Stay In Cuba

The paddles were extremely cumbersome to hold and maneuver. Consequently, they soon made our hands and upper arms sore, yet it was too late to turn back. Slowly the cheap wire holding the raft came unraveled, which allowed the 2x4’s to float away. Then, we were left to dangle our legs into the water and hold onto the left over wood and support ourselves with our sore arms. A Likely Story By Jonathan Wilkes: A Short Story

Waves like mountains rose up around us playing with the ship as if it were a ball; throwing us one way and tossing us back the next. The crew were desperately trying to follow orders but the screaming wind and crashing thunder made it almost impossible to hear even the loudest of commands and the violence of the heaving sea made it even harder for them to obey. White Water Rafting

Waves were crashing. Cold water was spilling in. Mist was flying in our faces as we journeyed down the river. The boat was bouncing back and forth, and was crashing into rocks left and right. These are some of the many things I experienced when I went white water rafting. The endurance and finesse of our strokes while we rafted were abruptly stopped. Then disaster stuck our raft. My family was on a week long vacation in Breckenridge, Colorado. It was a cool, summer day and we were all getting suited up to go white water rafting. I was very excited to get going. I kept my cool as we walked down to Buffalo River and divided up into groups. My siblings, cousins, and I got to be in a group since we were the youngest people there. As the guides went through how to paddle, what to do if someone fell out of the raft, and other important need to know items, my cousin, Rachel, and I were gushing over how cute we thought our guide was. Little did we know we should have been paying attention. We set on our journey in the 67 degree river water. We all squealed when we got into it because it was so cold. Once everyone got their rafts floating down the stream, we hit our first set of rapids. They were small so it was a nice test trial. My group soon learned how to maneuver them and we started to relax further on into the trip. We were having water fights and races with the other groups, splashing our paddles in the water at them, and having a good time. Then, before we knew it, we had gotten into some really big rapids! Paddling got harder and the waves got bigger. Staying in the boat was it’s own personal task. We were so concerned with our paddling that we didn’t watch how big the rapids were. My brother, Ethan, fell victim to them. Our guide was yelling, “Keep paddling, don’t stop! Ryan! Grab Ethan!” It all happened so fast, the boat was spinning in circles, and mass confusion struck our raft. None of us were paddling, and some of our paddles were in the water! My cousin, Ryan, eventually got Ethan out of the water and he was okay. Once the chaos subsided, we all calmed down and started laughing at what had just happened. It was a very memorable experience. I learned to always listen to instructions because you may never know when you will need them. This experience was so much fun that two days later we went white water rafting again. We went with a different company than before, but none the less it was just as much fun. However, Rachel and I listened to the guide this time, and then gushed about how cute he was. All in all I learned to always listen and to always make sure you have a strong person next to you when you white water raft, because you never know who may be pulling you out of a river. I also learned that when it comes to having a good time, your family is always the best ones to have it with. Even if they fall into a river on your trip.

Climate Change and Its Effects on White Water Rafting

Climate Change and its effects of White water rafting Parker Blackstock ADVG 101 T00038741 Nov 24/2012 Angela Bueckert With the rising effects of Global warming taking its toll on glaciers and agriculture in British Columbia, surprisingly the white water rafting industry has managed to grow significantly in the last 20 years. As the global temperature continues to rise, it is predicted that the Glaciers will be reduced to nothing, thus taking its effect on water flow. British Columbia has seen it’s average temperature rise twice as fast as the global average.

For rafting companies, this means shorter paddling season and flooding. “Average annual temperatures have warmed by between 0. 5-1. 7 degrees Celsius in different regions of the province during the 20th century. In fact, parts of British Columbia have been warming at a rate more than twice the global average. Live smart B. C. Effects of climate change 2011. ” Evidence shows our climate has changed in the past century and will continue to change, affecting both biological and physical systems.

In the past 50-100 years British Columbia has noticed an annual precipitation increase of about 20 percent, and lost around 50 percent of its snow pack annually. Also with the increased precipitation and faster melt the province has been more susceptible to floods in the Fraser Valley, Interior and throughout British Columbia. These floods and early melt are expecting to increase sea level 30 cm on the north coast and 50 cm in the Yukon by 2050. There has also been an outbreak of mountain pine beetle due to warmer winters.

The mountain pine beetle has infected an area of pine forest four times the size of Vancouver Island. The pine beetle epidemic has infested around 13 million hectares of forests in British Columbia. It is predicted, by 2013, 80 percent of B. C. ’s pine forest will be “red and dead”. Forest fires are another real source of concern for the rafting Industry, 2003 and 2009 were devastating years for BC, with nearly 5000 fires burning 500 000 hectares of land. As glacial reduction continues to affect the amount of water flow in B. C. s Rivers it will also affect hydroelectric power, fish habitat and tourism. Changes in climate, and the implications these changes have for destinations reliant on natural resources - whether resources used for industrial purposes or those critically important to the viability of industries such as tourism – will have significant economic impacts in the coming years. For the tourism industry, which simultaneously suffers from the effects of climate change as well as contributes to it, climate change presents unusual and complex policy and business development challenges. Exploring The Effects of Climate Change and Sustainable Development in the Tourism Jan 2004”.

Looking towards the future and my career goals I plan to work for Kumsheen Rafting. I worked for Kumsheen previously in 2010 working landscaping and building mountain bike trails around the resort. While I was working for Kumsheen I became quite interested in raft guiding. Once I finish my first year at Thompson Rivers University I plan to work as a guide at Kumsheen and gain experience to progress my rafting and guide career worldwide. After getting a season of raft guiding under my belt my goal is to travel South America starting in Patagonia and make my way north all the way to Mexico.

Beginning my journey in Paagonia, Chile working at Maipo Rafting, which is located just outside of Santiago, Chile then make my way to Cuzco, Peru and work at Mayuc Rafting. Moving on to Central America, working with H20 Rafting located in Quepos, Costa Rica. These are just a few select businesses that I have done some research on and find they could be great assets to a great white water rating resume. The effects that global warming will have on these goals is the restriction and quantity of rafting trips will be regulated due to water flow, as well as a shorter season, drought and more tropical storms with the rising global temperature.

Many rivers in B. C. run through provincial parks, and when those parks are subjected to forest fires, Parks Canada has chosen to let them burn freely unless it is threatening civilization in some way. With the plan to be an international Raft Guide, the majority of my clientele will be travelers from Europe and North America, mainly English speaking. But with the rise of Asian tourists in Canada soon there will be a large minority of the travelers in British Columbia and around Canada. As the Global temperature continues to rise, North, Central and South America have experienced numerous catastrophic weather related events.

These include, heavy rainfall in Venezuela (1999, 2005), flooding in Argentina (2000), drought in the Brazilian Amazon (2005), Hailstorms in Greater Buenos Aires area and Bolivia (2002,2005) and hurricane Katrina in 2004. Fortunately British Columbia has not been exposed to as many catastrophic events but is still at risk to floods, heat waves, drought, infectious disease vectors, diarrhoel diseases, ground-level ozone and cold waves. These events have affected the tourism industry in many ways, but will only get worse with the rising frequency of these events.

The issue at hand is not only the rising vulnerability of these catastrophic events but also the reduction of Glaciers in the Andean, costal and Rockies, which provide many communities with water. Once these rivers dry up, many of these rafting companies will have to close down because there business is built around the river. “As a consequence of possible temperature increases and changes in water availability, a substantial fraction of the existing forested area of the world would undergo major changes in broad vegetation types, particularly in temperate and northern latitudes.

Climate change over the next century is expected to push isotherms (lines of equal temperature) northward 150-550 km or result in an altitude increase of 150-550 meters. In B. C. and the Yukon, this could result in changes in tree species, increased frequency of forest fires, and more frequent outbreaks and extended ranges of pests and pathogens. February 15, 1996/ Implications of Climate Change for British Columbia and the Yukon inferred from the Second Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Working Group II”. “ For the south of Chile this will mean shrinking glaciers, less snow in the mountains, and less rain.

Southern Chile Environmental Issues 12 Nov 2012 Retrieved from: http://www. allsouthernchile. com/”. There are many efforts that the tourism industry is taking to address theses issues but as much as tourism is working to make it apparent to the public, it is also a part of the problem. Tourism brings in large economic boosts but with economic boost comes increased population, vehicle and foot traffic, garbage and litter, and strain on water supply. But at the same time you get increase in jobs and this is great for the economy. So tourism is a best/worst case kind of cenario, which needs to be brought to people’s attention. Some ideas that the industry has been working on are being more carbon neutral or sustainable as a company. There are also activists against government movements to put in dames and pipelines in or threw rivers which damage ecosystems. One concept that parks Canada is doing to address this issue is limiting or monitor how many people access certain areas and close during certain seasons. “Provincial governments in British Columbia and Quebec have proposed implementation of a carbon tax, which would also become relevant for tourism (Simpson et al. 2008) In early 2008 the National Round Table on the Environment and Economy (2008) provided a detailed report to the federal government recommending that a carbon tax or a cap-and- trade system, or a combination of the two, should be introduced as soon as possible. The proposed carbon tax was to include all sectors of the Canadian economy, including domestic aviation”. The 2010-2015 Plan of Chile’s General Directorate for Civil Aviation aims to minimize GHG emissions and noise from air transport, including airport activity management.

Measures adopted in this regard include: air quality control at airport locations; airport ISO certifications; the application of technical requirements for navigation performance on several routes; the implementation of the “Committee of the Minute” for fuel saving (with the aim of reducing aircraft flight time through better routes and enhanced air traffic control); and improvements in the design of national air space, resulting in the better use of the Global Navigation Satellite System.

These initiatives, combined with the modernization of the main national carrier’s fleet, resulted in IATA presenting the Eagle Awards 2008 to the General Directorate for Civil Aviation for excellence in air navigation services. There are many opportunities for the industry to contribute to the solution; I plan to do my part as a guide and a business owner to make an impact on climate change. As a guide I will educate my customers and clients on the risk at hand, and hope they too do there part to make change and pass that information on.

Being a guide puts you in a position of power and a big part of a raft guides personality is to entertain and educate so the customer can understand the importance of the river not only for entertainment but agriculture, economy and life. Once I am a business owner I will make sure my company is 100% carbon neutral and self sustain able by producing power on site with bio diesel generators, on site recycle plant, retail wind turbines, carbon offset summer plan and green rentals such as bikes, skateboards and rollerblades.

‘Total Disgrace’: Anger, Frustration as Mass Heating Failures Across Russia Leave Thousands in the Cold

water rafting essay

PODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents across Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their growing frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.

In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left in the cold when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.

“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.

“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."

The Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and others, have all been affected by heating outages this winter.

In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.

“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.

“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.

Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.

“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.

Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.

“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.

“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.

Placing the blame

Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.

Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.

“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”

An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said  Tuesday.

Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.

In the neighboring Tver region, authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in residents' heating bills, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. Investigators claim the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the payments for personal use.

Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.

The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure, which has been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.

The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .

water rafting essay

According to Sergei Pakhomov, head of the State Duma’s Construction, Housing and Utilities Committee, water pipes that were 90 years old or even older were still in use as recently as two years ago in some cases.

Housing, utilities and communal services are a common source of problems for Russians during the winter.

In St. Petersburg,  extensive ice coverage on city streets and sidewalks is a chronic source of  complaints , with many people ending up in the hospital over the years due to slipping and falling accidents.

In the Siberian republic of Khakassia, two villages were left without electricity last month due to apparent issues with outdated infrastructure.

water rafting essay

In the winter of 2020, five people in the Perm region were killed after a pipe burst.

When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”

"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.

As for now, those affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.

"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.

“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she said.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

water rafting essay

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
