If you’re applying for an open work permit, make sure you pay all applicable fees:

  • work permit fee ($155)
  • open work permit holder fee ($100)

  • submit your application
  • check your status

Inside Canada – Not eligible: Apply online under a public policy

Normally, visitors can’t apply for work permits from inside Canada. Due to a temporary policy change, visitors can apply online for an  employer-specific work permit  by following the steps below.

Who’s eligible

  • You must stay in Canada while we process your application. If you leave while your application is being processed, you won’t be eligible under this public policy.
  • Applications submitted before or after these dates are not eligible.
  • If your visitor status has expired, you’ll need to restore your visitor status before you apply for a work permit.

Certificat de sélection du Québec (CSQ) holders are also eligible for this public policy.

If you held a work permit in the last 12 months

You may be able to work while we process your application. Find out how .

If you’re a visitor in Canada, you’re not eligible to apply for work permit with a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) to work as a caregiver in either of the following National Occupational Classifications (NOC):

  • NOC 44100 (Home child care providers)
  • NOC 44101 (Home support workers, caregivers and related occupations)

You can find your NOC on your LMIA.

You must answer some questions. Make sure you answer these questions correctly:

  • Either less than or more than 6 months
  • Your current immigration status is as a visitor
  • When asked “Are you applying under the Canada–USA–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) or under a Public Policy related to work permits as announced by IRCC for an employer specific work permit?”, answer “yes”

If the printed expiry date on your Venezuelan passport has passed

If the printed expiry date has passed and you’re applying for a visitor visa, study permit, work permit or to extend your stay as a temporary resident in Canada, follow these steps:

  • Add 5 years to the printed expiry date shown on your passport and enter it in the expiry date field of the application form.
  • Include a letter of explanation with your application stating: “I am a Venezuelan national with a Venezuelan passport, which has been extended for 5 years”.

Warning: If your passport is still expired after adding 5 years to the printed expiry date, your passport is considered expired. You’re not eligible to submit an application with that passport.

Credit cards and prepaid cards

We accept credit cards and prepaid cards from:

  • MasterCard ®
  • American Express ®
  • UnionPay ®  (for online applications only; debit cards not accepted)

If you use a prepaid credit card, keep it for  at least  18 months after you pay to make refunds easier.  Find more on prepaid cards .

We also accept all Visa Debit cards.The card you use doesn't have to be in your name. The cardholder’s name will appear on the receipt but it does not need to match your application.

Debit cards

  • be from a Canadian bank using  INTERAC ®  Online , and
  • be registered for online banking through your bank’s website.

We also accept all Debit MasterCard ®  and Visa ®  Debit cards. If your card has the Visa Debit logo on it, alone or with the INTERAC ®  Online logo, select Visa Debit as your payment method.

The card you use does not have to be in your name. The cardholder’s name will appear on the receipt but it does not need to match your application.

Often, there are two ways job seekers can showcase their professional experience to an employer: by using a resume or a CV. In Canada, employers prefer a resume. A CV is mainly used only for academic applications such as academic jobs, grants, research fellowships, etc. 

To provide more clarity, here are some key differences between a resume and a CV:

Many countries use a CV instead of a resume, and some have a combination of both. Some regions use both terms interchangeably: for instance, in most European countries as well as New Zealand, the term CV is used to describe an equivalent of a Canadian resume. In Australia and South Africa, “curriculum vitae” and “resume” are synonyms that can be used interchangeably. In South Asia, the terms CV and resume are used interchangeably and refer to an equivalent of a traditional CV.  

In some parts of the world, it’s common to include personal information such as marital status, nationality, personal interests, hobbies, date of birth, address, and a photograph on a CV. In Canada, however, you shouldn’t include these details on your resume as it is not required under the employment law, and it is also not a part of the resume format.

As a job seeker in Canada, there are three types of resume formats you should be familiar with. Each of these formats includes the same basic information in a different layout. 

1. Reverse chronological resume

This type of resume outlines your professional experience in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent position.

When to use a reverse chronological resume?

If you’re an experienced professional with at least some experience in the workforce, have no major employment gaps , and intend to continue working in the same field.

Tip: The reverse chronological resume is the most popular format in the Canadian job market. Most employers and recruiters are used to and prefer a resume in this format.

2. Functional resume

The functional resume focuses on your overall skills and qualifications instead of specific professional experiences. The employment history is still included, but it is usually listed after skills and education. 

When to use a functional resume?

If you’re looking to switch roles and/or industries and start your career in a new field. It may also be ideal for recent college graduates.  

3. Combination or hybrid resume

A combination resume is a mix of the reverse-chronological layout and the functional layout and is ideal for showcasing transferable skills along with professional experience. In this format, work experience is usually outlined in a reverse chronological format, and the skills section includes a summary of qualifications and technical skills (or core competencies). 

When to use a combination or hybrid resume?

It is commonly used by a variety of job seekers ranging from experienced workers to recent graduates to those with limited experience, multiple short-term work stints, or those having significant work gaps.

Mastering the art of writing a flawless and impactful Canadian-style resume takes practice and patience. Here are a few tips to help you improve your resume-writing skills. 

1. Adapt your resume to each job listing and keep it relevant

Having a generic resume and sharing it with multiple employers for a variety of positions/roles may not yield the best result for you. It is essential to customize your resume to each position that you’re applying for. Tailor your work experience, skills, and any additional information to the role. Include keywords from the job posting and always start your sentence with relevant action verbs like spearheaded, achieved, managed, trained, etc. Craft a compelling summary for your resume. Avoid including very detailed information for each position you have held; you can share relevant details in the interview instead.

2. Optimize for Applicant Tracking System (ATS) but write for humans

Many companies use an ATS to pre-screen resumes and then involve recruiters and hiring managers later in the process. You need to keep both in mind when writing your resume. 

What is an ATS?

An ATS is a software that scans resumes to determine if it is a good match for a specific job listing. Parameters such as work experience, skills, and education are usually considered during the ATS screening process. Resumes that match the pre-defined criteria are forwarded to hiring managers or recruiters, while human eyes never see those rejected by the system. Therefore, even though you may be qualified for the position, if your resume isn’t optimized for an ATS, it may end up being rejected. An ATS is widely used by organizations, recruiters, and job placement agencies in Canada. 

How to optimize a resume for ATS

  • Use standard formatting and don’t include images, designs, charts, and tables. 
  • Use correct headers and include keywords that match the job description and desired core competencies and skills.
  • Send your resume as a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) document. Most ATS systems tend to process Word files better than PDF. 
  • Spell out abbreviations at least once on your resume. 
  • Include experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the position.
  • Avoid long paragraphs and font size less than size 10. 
  • Convert technical terms, grades, and scores to their Canadian equivalents. 

3. Check spelling, grammar, punctuation, and proofread your resume

It’s always a good idea to proofread your resume and check grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence formation, especially if English isn’t your first language or mother tongue. There are many free tools that can help you with proofreading: Grammarly as well as the in-built grammar and spelling tool in Microsoft Word, are good starting points. You can also ask a native English speaker to review your resume for language fluency.

4. Quantify your accomplishments

Many job seekers make the mistake of outlining roles and responsibilities instead of achievements. Recruiters and hiring managers prefer seeing quantified accomplishments on resumes. The ‘CAR’ approach is a good way to help you structure individual sentences: 

C = what was the Challenge , A = what Action did you take, and R = what was the Result .

Some examples to consider:

  • “Reached eBay Power Seller status within one year by auctioning over 400 items per month, an exceptional accomplishment reached by only 4 per cent of the 29 million eBay sellers at that time.” 
  • “Designed and built statistical analysis models on large data sets (e.g. Aster, Teradata) that helped increase online sales (up to 15 per cent per product) and lowered cart-abandonment rate by 23 per cent.” 

5. Include a cover letter

A cover letter is a formal one-page document that accompanies a resume. It is not a rephrased or concise version of your resume, but it is mainly supposed to talk about how you fit the role you’re applying for and why the organization should hire you. The cover letter is also a good way to justify any gaps in your resume or provide any additional info that your resume can’t.

Note that a cover letter doesn’t have to be a separate document but can also be included in the body of an email when applying for a job. Adding a custom, well-written cover letter to your resume can make you stand out from the crowd, thus improving your chances of being approached for an interview. 

Tips for writing an impressive Canadian-style cover letter

  • Limit the length to one page.
  • Tailor your cover letter to suit each job application.
  • Proofread your cover letter; check for grammar, punctuation, and spelling, especially since it serves as a reflection of your communication skills.
  • Use a standard font size (10 or 12 points, in a font style such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri). Avoid using special effects (bold/underline/italics, different fonts, and colour).
  • Weave in information you know about the company, their recent projects, or organizational culture and values.

6. Show off your skills with unpaid or local volunteer work

This is a good way for newcomers to show Canadian experience on their resume. If your volunteer work requires you to use skills that may also be valued in the position that you are applying for, adding the volunteer experience to your resume may work to your advantage.

The following are general guidelines only. You must tailor your cover letter to suit your own experiences, and to suit the specific position you are applying for.

Before You Begin

Once you find a specific job posting that you want to apply for, you can begin to work on your application cover letter. Following these steps before you begin will help you write the best cover letter possible.

1. Do Your Research

Before you begin to write your cover letter, learn everything that you can about the company or organization you are applying to. Check out their website and social media pages, research their top competitors, and read recent industry news articles. Learn the name(s) of the individual(s) who will be in charge of hiring for the position you want, as well as the head(s) of the company.

Also, keep in mind the job description and requirements for the role. it allows you to create a cover letter that showcases your qualifications, aligns with the company’s needs, and demonstrates your genuine interest in the position. What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter describes why you want to go to Canada, what you intend to do there, and your post-study plans. It also contains information highlighting your academic and professional achievements.

Two basic types of cover letters are required while applying for a Canadian student visa, i.e. SOP (statement of purpose) and LOE (letter of explanation). Essentially, both of these letters are the same but have different themes.

  • Statement of Purpose (SOP) is more for candidates applying for a Canada study visa for the first time.
  • LOE (Letter of Explanation) is for applicants reapplying for a Canada study visa after being denied one in the past).

Thanks to the computer science degree I obtained from Delhi Technological University in 2016, I was able to secure a very profitable job. During my studies, I learned how to design and write codes that are used in a variety of software programs worldwide. India’s software development industry is growing rapidly, and as a result, many companies are looking for developers who specialize in specific programming languages. Therefore, I am eager to expand my knowledge and skills by enrolling in an international graduate program.

I chose a graduate program focusing on Programming Languages at the University of Waterloo because it is among the best educational institutions globally for this study area. If you're a bit confused about whether you'll need a CV or resume for applications for Canada jobs, here's what you need to know:

  • Both of these are used to showcase professional work experience
  • In Canada, CVs are used primarily only for academic positions, fellowships, grants, postdoctoral positions, teaching or research positions, or high-level positions
  • Most other positions in Canada require a resume
  • CVs are usually around two pages long, while a resume is relatively short
  • A CV will usually give more detail on your experience, education, skills, publications, awards, research, etc. A resume, on the other hand, is made up of a summary of work experience, education, and skills relevant to the role

Not sure how to go about writing the perfect CV? Then follow these steps below.

Step 1 - Be Truthful

Do not lie or embellish your CV. Your Canadian employer will double-check the important facts you have listed on your application. This does not mean that you cannot list your achievements. Keep to the facts and provide dates, documents, or other evidence to support your claims.

If you are caught lying about your qualifications, your visa application could be rejected by the Immigration office. This could lead to a five-year ban, which means you won't be able to apply for any Canadian immigration program.

Step 2 - Choose a Clear Layout

The layout is critical, so ensure your CV is arranged neatly. Choose a reader-friendly font like Lato or Arial. Also, make sure that you make your font at least size 11, as your recruiter may not enjoy having to squint while reading your CV.

Spacing is also important. This helps your reader go through your CV with ease. Consider 1.15 line spacing for a great layout of information.

Also, ensure your CV has clear headings to break it down into easily readable bits. Headings you can use are:

  • Contact Information
  • Achievements

Note: The use of graphs or other images can also help break down an otherwise boring CV into something exciting. But don't forcibly add them if they don't work with your information.

Step 3 - Choose a Great CV Design

Choose your CV design wisely. There are many different CV designs and templates to work with, but ensure that your CV design matches your job. For example, choose a more classic design if you have a more serious occupation like an administrator. However, if you belong to a more creative profession, your CV aesthetic can showcase this.

Step 4 - Ensure you have clear contact details on your CV

Recruiters hate having to try and contact an applicant only to realize that they have neglected to leave their contact information. So if they cannot locate your information or contact you, they'll simply skip your CV, and you'll lose out on that job in Canada.

Also, make sure that your address is professional sounding. An inappropriate-sounding email address may leave a lasting bad impression.

Additionally, always double-check your contact information to make sure there are no mistakes and that you have your latest physical address on your CV.

Step 5 - Keep it Short, Clear, and Concise

Most of the time, recruiters prefer that your CV should be at most two pages. Yes, that may seem short. But imagine it this way: A Canadian company human resources manager may get over 200 applicants for one job position and probably has learned how to skim over information to find the right candidate quickly. You may have written a fantastic background of your work experience, but the HR may only spend 30 seconds skimming your CV before moving on. So keep it short and simple, highlighting the most important information.

Step 6 - List Your Educational Qualifications

Your educational qualifications should be listed from high school onwards. You can add any certificates, degrees, diplomas, or other qualifications you have received. You could scan these documents for a more professional touch and then create links on your CV. So when potential interviewers open your CV, they can verify your qualifications. You may also need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) , to verify your qualifications.

Step 7 - Update Your Work Experience

Remember, the whole point of a CV is to provide a summary of your work experience. Make sure you add your most recent work experience at the top of your list. Then move on to the least recent jobs. This is to keep the attention of your potential employer. If you have all the relevant information at the bottom of the page, they are less likely to read it all and rather skip over you as an unsuitable candidate.

Always remember that your CV is designed to be easy to read and user-friendly to whoever reads it.

Step 8 - Add References

Prospective employers and recruiters will want at least three contactable references to contact should you be up for consideration for the position you applied to. So list appropriate individuals who can vouch for your skills and character. You can include a former employer, line manager, supervisor, or even lecturer if you are a recent graduate. It's a good idea to inform anyone you list as a reference that you are adding them to avoid surprises when they receive a call from a recruiter.

Step 9 - Highlight Your Ability to be a Team Player

While companies review your CV to learn more about you, you should also remember that in the grand scheme of things, companies want to hire people that work well within a team. It's a good idea to demonstrate your ability to work as a team player by mentioning areas in which you have do so.

Step 10 - Double Check the Document

Before sending your CV and accompanying documents to a hiring Canadian company, have some of your friends or relatives read over them to double-check your spelling and grammar. You can hire an editor to professionally check your CV and cover letter to avoid embarrassing mistakes that could hinder your success. You could also have an immigration specialist check it for you.

Dear Senior Regulatory Coordinator Thompson: 

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce appreciates the opportunity to comment on the above-referenced notice. We were pleased when the State Department announced its intentions to launch this much-anticipated pilot program last February and our members welcomed the publication of the notice that created the program last December. Feedback from member companies has been very positive. When a company’s workers can obtain an H-1B extension without leaving the U.S., it provides both the employer and the employee with additional certainty that business disruptions can be avoided, deliverables can be completed in timely fashion, and companies are in a much better position to meet their business needs.

The Chamber is thankful for the State Department’s engagement with us as it designed the program’s contours and implemented it over the past several months. However, our members have conveyed to us that there are several ways in which this program could be built upon and improved. While we heard from many companies that had employees who have taken advantage of this pilot program, there were many other companies whose employees could not meet the eligibility criteria set forth under the pilot. In addition, several member companies that utilized the pilot informed us that some of the annotations made on their workers’ visas were sources of confusion for their businesses. We urge the State Department to rectify those issues by providing more guidance to the regulated community regarding how these annotations should be interpreted by the companies. Last, but certainly not least, the primacy that companies place upon workforce certainty cannot be understated and we believe it would benefit the State Department, our member companies, and their workers if this pilot program were made into a permanent program and the eligibility requirements were extended to cover several other visa classifications.

The Benefits of Expanding the Pilot Program and Making it Permanent

The Chamber appreciates the methodical approach the State Department took in reinstating domestic visa renewal capabilities for non-diplomatic, nonimmigrant visa holders. The launch of this pilot program represents the first time in roughly two decades that the State Department is performing this type of function for any type of nonimmigrant worker classification. Our members whose employees took advantage of this program understand that the Department’s decision to “start small” with strict eligibility criteria and only 20,000 application slots was driven by a desire to ensure that the program’s rollout was not afflicted by any significant processing hurdles. By that measurement, the rollout of the pilot program during this year has been a success, as the member feedback we’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive.

Nevertheless, there are many ways in which the State Department can build upon its successes and make this program much more beneficial not only to the American business community and the U.S. economy, but also to our nation’s security. The Department should make the pilot program permanent and extend eligibility for domestic visa renewals to applicants in many other classifications before the end of this calendar year. Making this program permanent will ensure that this tool can help the Department make the best use of its limited consular resources over an extended period of time. This is particularly important, considering the processing backlogs that it is currently confronting and the serious national security mission of the Department. Having the ability to redirect processing away from busy consulates will help improve their processing times and provide more consistency in adjudications. More importantly, it will free up consular resources that can be directed towards interviewing and investigating visa applicants that potentially pose a greater threat to the safety of the U.S. than foreign nationals that are already in the country and have oftentimes already undergone background checks on multiple occasions.

In addition to making the program permanent, the Department should expand the eligibility criteria of the current pilot program to include applicants for visas in several other visa classifications beyond the Department’s current limitations. As stated before, we understand the Department’s reasons for limiting eligibility to a subset of H-1B applicants whose visas were issued by Mission Canada or Mission India. However, allowing visa applicants from other countries and in different visa categories who do not pose a security risk to renew their visas in the United States will provide more companies with much-needed additional certainty as it pertains to their business operations. The State Department should expand this pilot program to cover as many visa classifications and as many individual applications as is practical.

Given that the pilot has been operating for only a few months, we can appreciate if the State Department desires to continue its methodical approach regarding any potential program expansion. If that is the case, we recommend that the Department consider the following categories in any future effort to expand the program’s eligibility constraints to the following cohorts of foreign nationals:

  • The dependents of all eligible principal H-1B nonimmigrants;
  • H-1B nonimmigrants that obtained their prior visa from other countries beside Canada and India, and expanding the issuance date eligibility criteria to cover more individuals, and;
  • Nonimmigrants possessing different visas in different classifications, such as F, E, J, L, and O, as well as any dependents and individuals accompanying the principal nonimmigrant to the U.S.

Feedback and Suggestions for Improving Domestic Visa Renewal Operations

As stated above, the Chamber received significant positive feedback from our members on the experience that their companies and their employees had in using the new pilot program. In fact, many of the companies conveyed to us that their employees that utilized the pilot obtained their new visas in a timely fashion. However, there were several suggestions that companies have for the State Department to improve the program’s operations moving forward.

One common refrain we heard from several companies was on the restrictive eligibility criteria preventing their employees from being able to renew their visa domestically. Multiple companies told us that the strict criteria prevented many of their workers from taking advantage of their program. Other businesses cited the inability of the principal nonimmigrant’s dependents to renew their visas domestically as a key factor in their worker’s decision to forego seeking to renew their visa domestically. These issues would be solved by the State Department expanding the program in the manner suggested above.

Another issue that has caused a significant amount of consternation for our members and their workers is the inclusion of an annotation of “not valid until ten days before the petition validity date” being included on the new visa stamp in the foreign national’s passport. Several companies have informed us that their workers spent a significant time worrying over what this meant for their status in the U.S. and whether it would inhibit their ability to return to the U.S. if they needed to travel internationally. The Chamber acknowledges that this language is included in the relevant section of the Department’s Foreign Affairs Manual (“FAM”), but it would behoove the Department to either revisit this section of the FAM or create a Frequently Asked Questions document that can help provide additional guidance to applicants. This additional information will provide individuals with a better understanding of what this annotation means for them and their ability to remain in the U.S., which in turn will help encourage more people to take advantage of the program.

Conclusion ​

We very much appreciate the State Department’s engagement with the Chamber throughout the process of reinstating this domestic visa renewal program. We hope the Department finds our feedback helpful as it seeks to expand the opportunities for hard-working foreign nationals to renew their nonimmigrant visas without having to the leave the U.S. More importantly, we look forward to working with the State Department to expand this pilot program in a manner that enhances business certainty and improves our national security.
