Educational Leadership Programs Moving Online

“Schools are open, leaders are leading, and the business of school is still going on,” said Debra Sullivan, the Educational Leadership Program Chair for the School of Education. “The whole crux of this program, regardless of how it’s delivered, is that it’s grounded in job-imbedded learning. The core assignments are all real-world leadership activities that real principals do, and so online coursework is a really valid delivery method.”

What Is an Online Master's in Educational Leadership Degree?

An online master's degree in educational leadership explores administrative elements in education, such as policy, curriculum design, and instructional supervision. These programs can lead to careers as school principals, superintendents, instructional coordinators, and postsecondary administrators.

Professionals already working in education typically pursue these programs to transition their careers beyond the classroom. Students can expect to learn about educational law and policy, school and community partnership building, and financial management. Usually 30-36 credits, a master's in educational leadership takes 1-2 years to complete, depending on enrollment status.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), educational leadership jobs offer high earning potential. The median school principal salary exceeds $100,000, while postsecondary education administrators earn a median wage of $99,940 per year. The outlook for these school administration jobs also appears stable, with the BLS projecting a growth rate as fast as average for instructional coordinator jobs from 2022-2032.

Master's in Educational Leadership Overview

A master's in educational leadership program provides advanced training in school administration. Graduate students complete coursework to prepare for roles as school principals, higher education administrators, and school superintendents. Our Methodology

Here at TheBestSchools.org, we take the trust and welfare of our readers very seriously. When making our school and program rankings, our top priority is ensuring that our readers get accurate, unbiased information that can help them make informed decisions about online education. That's why we've developed a rigorous ranking methodology that keeps the needs of our readers front and center.

Our proprietary, multi-criteria ranking algorithm analyzes key data indicators — as collected by the federal government — for each school or program. What data we use depends on the focus of each specific ranking, but in all cases, our ranking methodology is impartial: Schools  cannot buy better rankings  at TBS.

While specific criteria under consideration can vary by ranking, there are a few data points that we value most highly. They are affordability, academic quality, and online enrollment. Below, we break down our algorithm to help you understand what you're getting when you use one of our rankings.

  • Affordability
  • Online Enrollment

Data Sources

The data used in TBS rankings comes primarily from the federal government, and much of it is provided by the schools themselves. We aggregate and analyze this data to build our rankings.

The  Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System  (IPEDS) is our primary source. Its data comes from annual surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's  National Center for Education Statistics  (NCES). Every college, university, or technical school with access to federal financial aid must participate in these surveys, which include questions about enrollment, graduation rates, finances, and faculty qualifications. This is publicly available data, which you can access yourself through the  College Navigator .

Additionally, because we value a personal touch and the professional experience of our staff and Academic Advisory Board, we vet all results and adjust rankings as necessary based on our collected knowledge of schools and degree programs. Depending on the ranking, we may obtain additional input from  AcademicInfluence.com , subject matter experts, prior TBS ranking lists, or other sources we deem relevant to a particular ranking.

Breakdown of Our Rankings Methodology

About our ranking factors.

Here at TBS, we value what you value: quality education, affordability, and the accessibility of online education. These factors guide all of our program rankings.

Each of these factors are further broken down into weighted subfactors. For example, retention rates are weighted more heavily than availability of program options because they are a better indicator of student success.

We chose the following factors for our rankings because of their influence on learning experiences and graduate outcomes. However, students should always balance our rankings against their personal priorities. For instance, a learner who needs a fully online program may prioritize online flexibility more than our rankings do. Our rankings are designed to help you make a decision — not to make a decision for you.

Certifications and Licenses a Master's in Educational Leadership Prepares For

School Leaders Licensure: Many educational leadership jobs require school administration licensure, including jobs as school principals and administrators. Each state sets specific licensure requirements, but candidates generally must have accredited master's degrees in educational leadership or education administration.

Many states also require passing scores on an ETS school leadership examination. This test covers educational leadership topics, such as instructional leadership, organizational leadership, and strategic leadership. In some states, candidates for principal licensure must already hold valid teaching licenses. Prospective school administration professionals should research the licensure requirements in their state.

School Superintendent Assessment Certification: In many states, school superintendent jobs require a license or certificate. A candidate for school superintendent licensure often needs a master's degree in educational leadership or education administration from an accredited program.

Some states set additional coursework requirements, which may require a school superintendent concentration. Candidates may need to complete a standardized test covering school superintendent skills. The ETS exam includes multiple-choice questions on administrative leadership, educational leadership, and instructional leadership. Because the requirements for licensure vary by jurisdiction, prospective school superintendents should review the process in their state.

Educational Leadership Careers and Outlook

An educational leadership master's degree can lead to education careers outside traditional classroom settings. Some careers may require additional education, certification, or licensure. For example, some districts may prefer library media specialists with library science degrees, concentrations, or certifications.

Graduates of educational leadership programs often have teaching licensure and experience in the classroom. However, candidates without these credentials should consider administrative internships to gain experience and enhance their resumes.

The following careers are a few options for master's in educational leadership graduates.

Take a closer look at some of these options for educators interested in pursuing advanced roles.

Educational Leadership Jobs

Earning a master's in educational leadership prepares graduates for leadership roles in K-12 and higher education. At the K-12 level, graduates can work as school principals, instructional coordinators, and superintendents.

Instructional Coordinators

  • Median Salary: $66,490
  • Projected Job Growth 2022-2032: +2%

Instructional coordinators manage school curricula and teaching standards. Also known as curriculum specialists, these professionals review state and federal standards to create course schedules.

Working closely with principals and teachers, instructional coordinators implement curricula, develop educational materials, conduct teacher training workshops, and analyze data related to the course schedule effectiveness.

Instructional coordinators may also create teaching training procedures. Some instructional coordinators specialize in certain grade levels or subjects. For example, they can concentrate in special education or English as a second language.

School Principals

  • Median Salary: $101,320
  • Projected Job Growth 2022-2032: +1%

School principals oversee school operations at the K-12 level. They manage teachers and staff, establish class schedules, and coordinate curricula. As the highest administrator at a school, principals set academic goals for the institution and ensure teachers receive the resources they need to meet goals.

Principals analyze student achievement data to prepare reports and modify curricula. These professionals typically work with vice principals, instructional coordinators, and superintendents to manage schools. They oversee budgets and allocate resources, along with hiring and evaluating teachers.

School Administrators

  • Median Salary: $99,940
  • Projected Job Growth 2022-2032: +4%

School administrators manage student services, academics, and other departments. Many administrators work in higher education, where they oversee admissions, the registrar's office, and student affairs.

In these roles, school administrators analyze school needs to determine how to best meet them, promote the school's programs to prospective and current students, and provide information on financial aid support.

In student affairs, school administrators advise learners, create programs, and schedule student services. As administrators, they may supervise staff. Many school administrator jobs require a master's degree and experience teaching or working in an educational environment.

Popular Questions About Master's in Educational Leadership

How to Get the Most from Online Learning

Online learning offers valuable knowledge in an accessible format. Here's how to optimize your experience.

Lian Parsons

Pursuing professional development is always a good investment in yourself and, these days, programs are more accessible than ever. From in-person to hybrid to fully online options, participants can choose what works best for them.

However, there can be key differences in the experience you end up having depending on the format. For example, a virtual setting can feel more isolating than an in-person one. To minimize those differences — and maximize your outcomes — there are several ways to set yourself up for success when taking an online program.

Adrienne Phelps-Coco, executive director of Teaching and Learning at Harvard’s Division of Continuing Education, and Luis Poza-Garcia, director of course design for non-credit learning at Harvard DCE, offer insight on how to get the most out of an online program.

Preparation is Key

Before you even log onto Zoom, it’s important to have everything you need ready to go to ensure that you are taking advantage of the time you put in.

Do the pre-work

Many professional development courses, including those offered by Harvard DCE Professional & Executive Development, will include pre-work for participants. This can include preliminary readings or downloading a specific software program you may need for in-class activities.

Pre-work will help you to prepare for in-class discussions, active learning activities, roleplays, and other exercises. Make sure you complete this pre-work well in advance of the class start time so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.

Set up your workstation

As many programs take place over the course of several hours to a few days, your workstation should be optimized for you. Ensure that your internet connection is strong and secure, you are in a comfortable and quiet environment, and you have all the materials you need before class begins.

It can also be helpful to have plenty of snacks, coffee, and water close at hand so you don’t have to continuously get up to retrieve more fuel.

Limit distractions

Let those in your life know ahead of time that you will be engaged in a professional development program. Block off the course in your calendar and communicate with your team at work so they know when to expect your absence.

If you are attending the course at home, let those you live with know that you need this time to be uninterrupted. For example, set up childcare with your friends, family members, or a babysitter, and schedule expected deliveries for another day.

Set your expectations

Knowing what you want to get out of the experience is one of the main ways you can encourage positive outcomes for yourself.

“Thinking about, ‘How does this apply to my work?’ will help you as you come away from the class and be able to apply what you’re learning,” says Phelps-Coco. “This gives you something to build off of. It not only helps you to remember the material better, but also helps you to internalize what you’re learning and take it to the next level.”

Bring a positive and open mindset

You will likely be in a class with many people who are bringing a wide range of opinions, expertise, and experience to the program. Be mindful of this diversity and take advantage of the unique opportunity to learn from so many diverse perspectives.

As Poza-Garcia says, this classroom environment is a safe space where everyone should feel welcome.

“People need to feel comfortable sharing ideas and being able to speak up and to not be afraid to make mistakes, or to ask silly questions, especially when we join a class,” he adds.

Optimize Your Online Learning Experience

After all that prep work, you should be ready to have a great online learning experience! Here are a few tips to make the most of your time.

Stay engaged

One of the most crucial parts of getting the most out of an online program is staying engaged. You are taking the time out of your busy schedule to commit to this program, so being ready to immerse yourself in the experience will start you off on the right foot.

Minimize multitasking

This is time you have invested in yourself — commit to it! Set your email to automatic response, silence your phone, and avoid the temptation to work on other tasks while in class. You will benefit so much more by paying attention and absorbing the material than occasionally tuning in between other activities.

Be an active participant

Every participant in the course is attending for a reason and each person has something meaningful and valuable to contribute — including you. Especially in a virtual environment, it can be easy to just sit back. But to feel truly connected, ask questions, take notes, be active in the discussion, and get to know your classmates.

“We really expect that you will learn as much from your classmates as you will learn from the instructor and this community really is important,” says Phelps-Coco. “Jump in, get to know your peers, really share your ideas, and know that that’s an important part of the learning process.”

Ultimately, you get out of the experience what you put in!

Keep Up the Momentum

Lifelong learning is all about maintaining and nurturing your passion for knowledge. After the class is over, connect with your fellow participants on LinkedIn or other social media so you can take advantage of the invaluable network the experience offers. Staying in touch with your classmates could lead to more opportunities and connections in the future!

“Everybody who’s there has something really valuable to contribute,” says Phelps-Coco. “There are likely going to be many people who can help you connect and solve problems together.”

Reach out to your instructor as well — they have a wealth of experience beyond the classroom and are equally passionate about sharing it. Lifelong learning extends far beyond the classroom and taking a professional development course is just one way of getting involved.

“What we’re trying to do is to create a community that continues the lifelong learning idea, not just finished programs, and that’s it,” says Poza-Garcia. “No, that’s just the beginning.”

Online college classes, persisting past COVID, may be the key to offsetting a looming enrollment cliff

online educational leadership programs illinois

If you were in school yourself, or knew someone or had children in school when the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, then you probably remember well what it was like when education moved entirely online.

And if you remember that, then you probably remember the refrain that accompanied those early pandemic days: At some point, everyone hoped, things would go “back to normal.”

As it turns out, online education — to varying extents — is the new normal at the post-secondary level. Data from the Department of Education’s Integrated Post Secondary Education Data Systems shows that a majority of college students took at least one or more of their classes online in 2022: 54%. In pre-pandemic fall 2019, it was just 37% of students.

“That was really due to a spike that occurred during the COVID years that really opened up the eyes of both students and faculty that might have been resistant to online — even though a lot of what happened during COVID wasn’t really what I would call ‘online education,'" said Anthony Piña, Illinois State University’s chief online learning officer, in an interview.

Piña said the percentage of college students taking at least one online class had been creeping up by about 2% every year since the early 2000s. Had virus mitigation efforts not pushed all education online, Piña said the expected figure would have been 43% of all college students having at least one online class last year — not the ten-points-higher 53%.

Kate Herald Browne is Heartland Community College's director of online education and instructional technology. She said 45% of HCC students take at least one class online.

“I think that reflects a lot of the trends we’re seeing at Heartland [Community College],” Kate Herald Browne, HCC’s director of online education and instructional technology, said in an interview. “45% of our students take online classes. If students didn’t want these courses, they wouldn’t be enrolling in them even if we offered them.”

The way that Herald Browne sees it, a broad offering of online courses positions HCC to better serve the needs of its students. No online-only degree programs are offered, but the ability to take some classes remotely expands student access to Heartland.

“I think when you’re talking about education, there’s a commitment you make to your students: That you will meet them where they’re at,” she said. “The inclusivity of online learning is what is going to make institutions like Heartland much more attractive to folks — not just inclusivity for inclusivity’s sake, but to say, ‘You see me, you recognize me and what I’m going through in my life, and this education will fit into the complexity that I’m experiencing now.’”

And for a college with nearly half of its students enrolled in at least one online class, Herald Browne says HCC’s future goals with online learning are not necessarily focused on expanding that percentage.

“It’s more about, ‘What are we doing correctly to maintain that 45%? What are students enjoying about these classes? What are our learning outcomes? How can we go deeper into the style of teaching that makes this experience really meaningful?’” she said. “There are some folks who just think that’s not possible for online learning — that it’s not serious. But I don’t believe that; I truly believe that online learning is and can be the best of both worlds.”

New, online-only degree programs

But some institutions see expanded online courses as a sort of unexplored frontier or means of offsetting rising costs and declining enrollment ahead of the expected drop in potential students in coming years.

In Illinois, the cohort of high school seniors set to graduate last year was down 5% already from a 2015 peak. That total is projected to drop by at least 22% by the mid-2030s, as reported by Crain's Chicago. The dropoff was part of a recent presentation by ISU interim president Aondover Tarhule who said the university is bracing for 2026, when 20,000 fewer students are expected to graduate high school.

For some universities, the effects are already being felt: In Wisconsin, three regional campuses of the University of Wisconsin are set to move to online-only instruction to avoid closure after lagging enrollments.

ISU recently welcomed its largest freshman class since 1986, but sustaining those numbers may prove challenging. Piña, a longtime educational technology professional, was hired in 2022 to be ISU's chief strategist on expanding and improving online learning — a position explicitly created ahead of the "enrollment cliff."

“ISU has been very successful at being a university for what we would call traditional students: Students who are here to study full-time. Students who either live on campus or close to campus,” he said. “Where many of our sister campuses are struggling and shrinking or closing down programs, that hasn’t been our problem here, so online learning hasn’t really been a large focus.”

Anthony Piña is Illinois State University's chief online learning officer. He says ISU is preparing to offer online-only master’s degree programs in public health, actuarial science and sports management, though they are still pending approval and finalization.

With the number of students graduating high school set to drop precipitously, Piña said the university is eyeing different markets for its education. The university hired education consulting firm EAB to help identify new targets for expansion and landed on a series of new graduate degree programs.

The online-only master’s degree programs will be offered in public health, actuarial science and sports management, though they are still pending approval and finalization. It’s possible that some online-only undergraduate degree programs could be offered in the future, though that's not the primary focus currently.

“What we’re using online for is to reach markets that that we don’t currently reach: Employed students, people who started college and didn’t finish, and students from outside of the U.S.,” he said. “We don’t have to grow: With our strategy, we’ll be able to backfill and not shrink and be in that panic mode that so many of our peers are.”

Since the ultimate goal is to bring in additional revenue sources, professional certifications and microcredentials are also among the ways ISU plans to grow online; Piña said collaborations with some of the area’s largest employers like State Farm, Rivian and Country Financial are “an untapped market” for online learning.

"The whole idea behind this is to provide more options, more choices. ...Technology is used for one reason only: To solve problems. And if that problem is that you're physically separate from the campus, then you have online and distance education to solve that particular problem," he said.

Elise Awwad is president and CEO of DeVry University .

As we move forward through 2024, higher-education leaders face an array of pressing challenges shaped by technological, societal and economic factors. They must respond strategically and innovatively to thrive.

Today’s digital era demands a rethinking of how we deliver education. Artificial intelligence and data analytics are reshaping teaching and learning, but institutions will need to do more than just adopt new tools. They must transform their approaches to support students throughout their educational journeys.

With the looming enrollment cliff , I'm finding that the student body is becoming more diverse and includes more non-traditional learners. Institutions must adapt programs and services to cater to varied needs and maintain relevance and inclusivity. As student expectations change, I believe colleges need to consider more flexible options like microcredentials and lifelong learning pathways.

The mental health and well-being of students and staff are also a growing concern that higher education leaders must address proactively. Support services need to be comprehensive, accessible and inclusive. Reactive approaches are insufficient. Therefore, leaders must foster environments that sustainably support well-being.

Apple Developing Ring To Beat Samsung Galaxy Ring, Report Claims

Wwe raw results, winners and grades on february 26, 2024, here’s what would be impacted by a partial government shutdown.

With the higher education landscape facing rapid change, here’s what leaders can expect to tackle this year and beyond to meet the needs of the evolving educational sector.

Future-Proofing Higher Ed

With emerging technologies, economic shifts and evolving workforce needs, colleges and universities must constantly adapt to continue providing value to students.

One of the most important ways colleges and universities can future-proof themselves is by prioritizing lifelong learning, which is necessary to keep up with advancements and remain competitive in today’s job market. The pace of technological change means that skills and knowledge acquired through initial education can quickly become outdated. More than 20% of all jobs will change within the next five years, according to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2023 (download required). The report also said that "respondents expect structural job growth of 69 million jobs and a decline of 83 million jobs. This corresponds to a net decrease of 14 million jobs, or 2% of current employment."

To address this, higher education leaders must focus on building lifelong learning pathways that enable individuals to adapt to changes and advance their careers. This includes continuing to develop programs aligned with evolving workforce needs, as well as strengthening corporate and workforce partnerships. At my institution, for example, we quantify the value of our programs through the return delivered and also an approach that evaluates skills and career outcomes to ensure we are meeting the needs of students and employers.

In addition to program offerings, technology plays an important role in enabling lifelong learning. Artificial intelligence has the potential to enhance outcomes and institutional success. Using AI to amplify human talent and gain data-driven insights can help higher ed remain competitive, adaptable and aligned with industry changes.

Embracing Digital Transformation

Colleges and universities can accelerate their digital transformation efforts to enhance the student experience and streamline operations. A survey of campus chief technology and information officers by Inside Higher Ed found that 73% of respondents consider digital transformation a “high priority” or “essential.” Beyond just integrating technology in teaching and learning, this transformation includes leveraging data for informed decision-making, automating processes and providing digital platforms to support students, faculty and staff.

AI technologies are emerging as a key tool to enable and enhance digital transformation in higher ed. Chatbots, predictive analytics and adaptive learning systems are just a few examples, I believe, of how AI can improve efficiency, enhance decision making and provide personalized support for students. However, the use of AI also brings up important ethical questions that institutions must consider.

Continuously Evaluating Workforce Alignment And Career Readiness

As new technologies emerge and jobs are created, transformed or eliminated, educational systems must continuously adapt to properly prepare students for the new world of work. Career readiness has never been more important.

In that vein, institutions should strengthen partnerships with industry leaders to understand their workforce needs and ensure curricula align with the requirements of future employers. For instance, given the rise of generative AI, academic programs will likely emphasize developing durable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication, which are essential to enabling technology adoption and value generation. These skills will allow students to thrive in workplaces fueled by emergent and advanced technologies. And so, higher ed must double down on ensuring students are adaptive and able to thrive in careers and workplaces that will inevitably be impacted by more technological changes.

Additionally, I believe experiential learning will need to play a more prominent role in the development of talent. Internships, apprenticeships and project-based learning help students link practical classroom experiences and the application of skills in the workplace. This type of learning provides valuable networking and exposure opportunities.

Addressing The Issue Of Access And Affordability As A Top Priority

The cost of higher education continues to rise in the U.S., putting college out of reach for many students. Making higher education more affordable and accessible is fundamental to providing opportunities for people from all backgrounds. Focusing on innovative funding options and cost-effective program delivery can help address issues of access and equity.

There are several ways higher ed can lower costs while providing high-quality education. Developing accelerated options where students can earn credits for skills and knowledge they already possess allows them to complete degrees faster and for less money. Partnerships with local businesses and nonprofits to provide internships, apprenticeships and work-study programs give students valuable experience while offsetting educational expenses. Offering more hybrid and online courses could help reduce infrastructure costs and provide flexibility.

Access also remains an ongoing concern, especially for first-generation students and those from underserved communities. Proactive outreach and specialized guidance can assist students throughout the educational journey, especially when navigating the complexities of admissions and financial aid.

In summary, visionary leadership in higher education demands forward-thinking, data-driven decision-making and a commitment to the return delivered. Leaders must anticipate future needs, encourage innovation and establish trust through transparent practices. This kind of leadership is key to helping institutions overcome challenges, fulfill their missions and, most importantly, equip learners with the tools they need for continual success.
