URI study examines audio-visual speech perception in parents of children with autism

Research on ‘Broad Autism Phenotype’ potentially affecting direct relatives aims to better understand the broader picture of autism

It’s well established that children with autism often process audio-visual cues differently than their peers, especially during verbal communication. They may not make direct eye contact or focus intently on a speaker’s mouth. These differences in audio-visual speech perception may contribute to why children with autism show differences in language development when compared to peers.

Direct relatives of people with autism sometimes display similar traits, in a much milder form that may not even be noticed outside a lab. While the Broad Autism Phenotype—mild, sub-clinical autistic characteristics or behaviors in first-degree relatives of people with autism—has been studied extensively in siblings, few studies exist on parents of children with autism. Researchers in the University of Rhode Island Department of Communicative Disorders are looking to fill that gap to gain a better understanding of the traits of autism.

“We’re really trying to get a broad sense—not just kids with autism, not just parents, but really getting a larger birds-eye view of autism as a whole,” said Assistant Professor Alisa Baron, who is working with fellow Assistant Professor Vanessa Harwood on a high-tech look at speech perception among family members of children with autism. “We’re not trying to diagnose autism in parents; we’re really just trying to get a better understanding of what various characteristics that may be associated with autism.”

Harwood and Baron—who have extensively researched audio-visual speech perception —use eye-tracking technology to determine subtle differences in where participants tend to look when observing human and computer-animated faces speaking. That technology is combined with electroencephalogram (EEG) sensors that monitor brain activity to determine the neural response while observing speech—tiny differences in the number of neurons that fire in the brain when looking at a speaking face and how fast that firing happens.

“Speech perception is a pretty complicated phenomenon,” Harwood said. “While we hear information from a speaker, there’s a lot of learning that happens with face-to-face communication. We learn by looking at a speaker’s mouth and integrating it with what we hear. Persons with autism don’t gaze the same way at the eyes and the mouth; they don’t focus on them as much. This is just one theory why kids with autism might not develop language at the same levels as neuro-typical kids.”

The researchers examine differences in how the brain processes subtle aspects of speech to gain a better understanding of the broad autism phenotype. Studying direct relatives can help add to the knowledge base around the autism spectrum, giving researchers a wider look at the condition, the characteristics of which may be displayed in more people than researchers and clinicians realize.

“We look at autism broadly. We’re trying to think about putting all the pieces together,” Harwood said. “What are the characteristics of autism? How does it affect families? It’s a very complicated phenomenon. That’s why we’re looking at audio-visual speech perception within the population of kids with autism, and in a wide variety of people. We’ve done research on the broad autism phenotype in the population at large because there’s this population of humans that might have some elevated autistic traits.”

Harwood and Baron continue to recruit study participants interested in learning about their audio-visual speech perception and helping contribute to the growing body of knowledge around one of the fastest growing developmental disorders in the United States. “The parents who have come in, like the autism community at large, are generally deeply invested in finding answers,” Harwood said. “They’re really interested in finding better diagnostic processes, having earlier identification, and trying to find good interventions for persons with autism. We still don’t know why there’s such variance in communication abilities in persons with autism. We don’t understand the mechanism of that to this day. By gaining a better understanding of the traits of autism, we maybe can flesh out that picture a little better.”

Prepare for a high-impact career tackling public health problems from air pollution to obesity to global health equity to the social determinants of health.

The PhD in population health sciences is a multidisciplinary research degree that will prepare you for a career focused on challenges and solutions that affect the lives of millions around the globe. Collaborating with colleagues from diverse personal and professional backgrounds and conducting field and/or laboratory research projects of your own design, you will gain the deep expertise and powerful analytical and quantitative tools needed to tackle a wide range of complex, large-scale public health problems.

Focusing on one of five complementary fields of study at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and drawing on courses, resources, and faculty from the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, you will become well-versed in a wide variety of disciplines while gaining specialized knowledge in your chosen area of study.

As a population health sciences graduate, you will be prepared for a career in research, academics, or practice, tackling complex diseases and health problems that affect entire populations. Those interested in pursuing research may go on to work at a government agency or international organization, or in the private sector at a consulting, biotech, or pharmaceutical firm. Others may choose to pursue practice or on-the-ground interventions. Those interested in academics may become a faculty member in a college, university, medical school, research institute, or school of public health.

The PhD in population health sciences is a four-year program based at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the world-renowned Longwood Medical Area of Boston, Massachusetts. The degree will prepare you to apply diverse approaches to solving difficult public health research issues in your choice of one of five primary fields of study:

  • Environmental health
  • Epidemiology
  • Social and behavioral sciences
  • Global health and population

In your first semester, you and your faculty adviser will design a degree plan to guide you through the program’s interdisciplinary requirements and core courses, as well as those in your chosen field of study. After successfully completing the preliminary qualifying examination, usually at the end of your second year, you will finalize your general research topics and identify a dissertation adviser who will mentor you through the dissertation process and help you nominate a dissertation advisory committee.

All population health sciences students are trained in pedagogy and teaching and are required to work as a teaching fellow and/or research assistant to ensure they gain meaningful teaching and research experience before graduation. Students also attend a special weekly evening seminar that features prominent lecturers, grant-writing modules, feedback dinners, and training opportunities.

All students, including international students, who maintain satisfactory progress (B+ or above) receive a multiyear funding package, which includes tuition, fees , and a competitive stipend.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Anyone with a distinguished undergraduate record and a demonstrated enthusiasm for the rigorous pursuit of scientific public health knowledge is encouraged to apply. Although a previous graduate degree is not required, applicants should have successfully completed coursework in introductory statistics or quantitative methods. Preference will be given to applicants who have either some relevant work experience or graduate-level work in their desired primary field of study.

Like all PhD (doctor of philosophy) programs at the School, the PhD in population health sciences is offered under the aegis of the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (Harvard Griffin GSAS). A native of India, Soumik Purkayastha, MS ’21, PhD ’24, first made a connection with the University of Michigan School of Public Health in 2005.

Purkayastha was born in Chandannagar, a town about the same size and population as Ann Arbor, in the state of West Bengal. He spent most of his childhood with his parents in Kolkata or with his grandparents in Chandannagar. 

A visit to Ann Arbor when he was in fourth grade would leave an indelible impression on Purkayastha and set him on a path toward a career in public health.

“My father visited the Department of Biostatistics during his sabbatical year,” he said. “My mother and I were able to join him for a few months here in Ann Arbor. Later, when I was applying to graduate programs in the United States, the program here was very attractive because not only was it a great program, but I felt a personal connection to the school and the town at large.

It’s encouraging to see how the integration of data science in public health contributes to improved health outcomes. In many ways, I feel our work is meaningful and well-received not just in clinical circles but also by policymakers and the media.”

“Back in 2005, I had no way of knowing I’d be spending a good chunk of my 20s in Ann Arbor, but now I can look back and connect some dots.”

For Purkayastha, one of the most interesting things about public health is how he keeps learning about exciting ways in which public health and data science intersect.

“It’s encouraging to see how the integration of data science in public health contributes to improved health outcomes,” he said. “In many ways, I feel our work is meaningful and well-received not just in clinical circles but also by policymakers and the media.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Purkayastha had an opportunity to work on spatio-temporal forecasting of infectious diseases. His areas of focus included infection rates in India, comparing and understanding how different transmission models work, as well as developing a transmission data-driven framework to help inform public health policy.

“What I enjoyed the most was getting to learn from epidemiologists, biostatistics, economists and policy experts at a time when we were all confined to our apartments,” Purkayastha said. “It was a time when all of us struggled, yet our collective efforts at understanding what was going on in the world around us gave me a sense of purpose—and I cherish that.

“I think working in public health gives me a sense of direction on what to do with my skill set while also finding meaning in the work I do.”

Purkayastha will graduate in May with a PhD in Biostatistics from the Department of Biostatistics at Michigan Public Health. He earned a Master of Science in Biostatistics from Michigan Public Health after receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Statistics from St. Xavier’s College and the Indian Statistical Institute respectively, both of Kolkata, India.

Driving change with biostatistics

He found meaning in working with the student organization STATCOM: Statistics in the Community .

“I’m proud to say that my department is home to STATCOM, a community outreach program provided by graduate students at the University of Michigan,” Purkayastha said.

The program offers the expertise of graduate students—free of charge—to nonprofit governmental and community organizations in the areas of data organization, analysis, and interpretation.

“I have been very fortunate to find meaningful consulting work with a host of community partners,” he said. “From 2022-23, I had the honor of serving as co-president of STATCOM. It has been both challenging as well as rewarding. I expect to continue with STATCOM until I graduate.”

A few of STATCOM’s recent projects include partnerships with:

  • The Michigan Center for Youth Justice (MCYJ): STATCOM’s partnership with the MCYJ revolves around understanding the patterns of special investigations and violations occurring in juvenile justice facilities throughout the state.
  • The Detroit Housing Commission (DHC) and Poverty Solutions (PS): STATCOM has been working with the DHC and PS to investigate evictions among families with children in Detroit to reduce accompanied and unaccompanied youth homelessness rates.
  • Stand with Trans (SWT): STATCOM is collaborating with SWT to identify gaps in—and further improve—online resources that are designed to empower and support transgender youth.

Purkayastha also worked as a research assistant at the University of Michigan, studying diabetes.

“I worked with doctors and clinical experts to study diabetic foot ulcers,” he said. “They’re a major cause of amputation in US adults. With diabetes prevalence rising, understanding how these ulcers behave is crucial not only from a surgical perspective but also from a preventive viewpoint. It was a wonderful experience getting to apply my technical skills to real diabetes data to derive insights through statistics and visualization tools. I learned a lot about the disease from medical professionals as well.

“I think the work biostatisticians do is helpful for practitioners and policymakers as we learn more about disease prediction and prevention. Most importantly, the work we do in public health must be accessible and informative to the public. I think it’s incredibly important that we use all our skills to advocate for public health initiatives, policies and practices.”

In addition, Purkayastha had an internship with Apple in California, where he learned about language models.

“The future of language models in medicine, and public health is incredibly exciting,” he said. “I was also fortunate to receive the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship for my final dissertation year. It allowed me to focus on developing new research projects and spend a lot of time thinking about cool, new ideas.”

Working in public health is ‘incredibly rewarding’

After graduation, Purkayastha will join the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Pittsburgh as an assistant professor in the fall. He will be engaged in methodological and applied public health research in addition to teaching and mentoring younger students in public health education and research.

“Soumik is a terrific example of the best of Michigan graduates; His dedication to translational biostatistics is inspiring,” said Bhramar Mukherjee , the John D. Kalbfleisch Distinguished University Professor of Biostatistics and Siobán D. Harlow Collegiate Professor of Public Health. “His work is grounded in solid theory and computation but has profound public health impact. He has been an amazing student leader through his work in departmental committees and through our flagship student organization STATCOM. I look forward to his scholarly career after graduation. I know he will make a difference.”

Purkayastha said he thrives on the satisfaction of knowing that his efforts in public health are making a positive impact on the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

“I feel it can be incredibly rewarding on a personal level for many others as well,” he said. “I have seen firsthand how the work we do translates to changes in governance and policy making. Further, there is an increasing need for health data scientists, who use their data skills for the public good. And it’s not just biostatistics, public health offers a wide range of career paths and specialties, including epidemiology, health education, policy development, environmental health and global health. This diversity allows individuals to find roles that align with someone’s interests, skills and passions, creating opportunities for personal and professional growth.

“I’m satisfied with my career choices so far. Working in public health allows me to focus on a lot of things I’m interested in while building something useful for communities at large. It’s a good feeling, and I wish that for everyone.”

Utah Governor’s Medal Given to Neli Ulrich, PhD, MS, for Outstanding Research and Leadership

Neli Ulrich, PhD, MS

Neli Ulrich, PhD, MS , chief scientific officer and executive director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah (the U) and professor of Population Health Sciences at the U, has been awarded the 2024 Governor’s Medal for Science and Technology .

The prize recognizes the recipient’s distinguished service and meaningful contributions to science in the state of Utah.

“This award celebrates Ulrich’s exceptional leadership abilities at Huntsman Cancer Institute,” says Utah Gov. Spencer Cox. “Utah is proud to be home to such a world-renowned institution, and we commend her in her research efforts toward curing cancer.”

Ulrich, a native of Germany, first came to Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute a decade ago. As a renowned expert in cancer research with more than 450 scientific publications, she has led Huntsman Cancer Institute’s research teams to an “exceptional” national rating, the highest rank achievable from the National Cancer Institute.

“It’s a very special honor to be recognized by the governor of Utah for science and technology, which we know are critical for accelerating our joint progress in this world, and in our state,” says Ulrich. “The award is not really about me but the amazing cancer research teams at Huntsman Cancer Institute, where we bring together people of diverse backgrounds to collaborate in ways that are unique and impactful in the service of our patients, our state, and our region.”

Ulrich is one of just a few women who serve as director of a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center . In this role, she has led a variety of initiatives to address gaps in health care seen in rural patients across Utah and the Mountain West. Under her leadership, Huntsman Cancer Institute has developed clinical trials that serve remote populations and created community partnerships to lessen the burden of distance as a disparity in cancer prevention, screening, and treatment.

She also oversees more than 250 research teams at Huntsman Cancer Institute, each pursuing a cancer-free frontier through laboratory, clinical, translational, and population-based research. Her team, the Ulrich Group , has performed landmark research on colorectal cancer prevention and survivorship.

“Dr. Ulrich embodies the pioneering spirit of the Governor’s Medal which is demonstrated by her numerous scientific achievements,” says  Mary Beckerle, PhD , CEO of Huntsman Cancer Institute. “Her relentless dedication and drive to push boundaries through collaboration has shaped and will continue to drive the landscape of innovation in Utah and beyond.”

Ulrich is one of three recipients of the Governor’s Medal this year. She received her prize for accomplishments in academics and research. Others are awarded for K-12 scientific education and advancements in local industry. Ulrich will be presented with the award at the 2024 One Utah Summit. The summit, held on April 12, aims to recognize individuals and companies making significant contributions to Utah’s economy, local communities, and industries.

“I’m thrilled to see Dr. Ulrich honored with this distinction,” says Angela Fagerlin, PhD, associate vice president for faculty at University of Utah Health. “She is an outstanding leader and scientist who is saving and improving lives with her groundbreaking research. Under her stewardship, investigators at Huntsman Cancer Institute are helping create a future free from cancer.”

Nursing Rises in ‘U.S. News’ Best Graduate Schools Rankings

Continuing its mission of shaping the nursing profession and the health care environment by developing leaders in education, research, and practice, the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) has again ranked in the top 10 across the board for public schools of nursing — and moved up in all six categories in which the school is ranked — in the newly released 2024 edition of U.S. News & World Report ’s “ America’s Best Graduate Schools ,” out of 651 accredited nursing schools surveyed.

Both UMSON’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and its Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs climbed in the rankings among all schools surveyed, with DNP tied at No. 8 (up from No. 15 last year) and MSN at No. 20 overall (up from No. 25 last year). Among public schools of nursing, the DNP program is tied at No. 4 and the MSN is ranked No. 9.

Two UMSON specialties lead the way in the rankings, both ranked No. 1 (tied) nationwide among public schools of nursing:

  • The DNP Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner specialty, tied at No. 4 among all ranked schools
  • The MSN Health Services Leadership and Management specialty, No. 2 among all ranked schools

UMSON also is ranked in the top 10 among public schools of nursing for its:

  • Family Nurse Practitioner Doctor of Nursing Practice specialty (No. 3)
  • DNP Nurse Anesthesia specialty (No. 7, tied)

“It is gratifying to continue to be recognized nationally for our Doctor of Nursing Practice program and our Master of Science in Nursing program,” said Yolanda Ogbolu, PhD, NNP, FNAP, FAAN , the Bill and Joanne Conway Dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing. “The School of Nursing plays a vital role in our collective efforts in Maryland and nationally to increase the number of nurses with advanced education, particularly at the doctoral level. It is essential that we have nurses who are well prepared to meet the changing needs of patients, their families, and our communities at a time when we face increasing complexity in our health care system, growing diversity in our population, and persistent gaps in access to needed care.”

The U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on a variety of indicators, including student selectivity and program size, faculty resources, and research activity, and on survey data from deans of schools of nursing that are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

In fall 2023 and early 2024, U.S. News surveyed 651 nursing schools with master’s or doctoral programs. In total, 292 nursing programs responded to the survey. Of those, 216 provided enough data to be included in the rankings of nursing master’s programs and 188 provided enough data to be eligible for inclusion in the ranking of DNP programs. Many institutions were ranked in both, using overlapping data.

Emory University’s graduate and professional schools and programs continue to be ranked among the best in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best Graduate Schools, which was released April 9.

The annual list uses data, surveys and other information to rank programs in schools of nursing, public health, business, law and other areas. The publication has delayed releasing rankings for medical schools, engineering schools and clinical psychology programs because of concerns with the data.

Here are the Emory schools included in this year’s national rankings:

The Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing master’s program ranks 1st in the nation. The school’s doctor of nursing practice program is 6th.

The Rollins School of Public Health ranks 3rd in the nation.  In the category of public health programs, U.S. News issued rankings for several master’s programs: biostatistics (5th), environmental health science (3rd), epidemiology (4th), health policy and management (8th) and social behavior (3rd). 

Goizueta Business School’s full-time MBA program ranks 18th. The Executive MBA program is 13th and the part-time program is 20th.

The School of Law ranks 42nd in the nation. Multiple programs within the school also received rankings including business/corporate law (22nd), constitutional law (25th), contracts/commercial law (21st) and health care law (21st).

The Laney Graduate School awards all PhDs at Emory in partnership with faculty located in various schools and departments across the university. Among doctoral science programs, computer science is 64th.

In U.S. News’ rankings of nursing master’s programs, Emory’s nurse practitioner, adult/gerontology, primary care is 3rd ; nurse practitioner, adult/gerontology, acute care is 4th; and family nurse practitioner program is 4th.

In rankings of Emory’s doctor of nursing practice programs, adult gerontology/acute care is 4th; adult gerontology/primary care is 3rd; family practice 5th; and nurse administration management 6th.

Each school may have additional information about rankings issued to specific programs. Not all graduate and professional programs are ranked annually.
