  • What to expect from our Year 5 Maths worksheets

These KS2 maths worksheets cover every part of the Year 5 primary maths curriculum, to help your children practise and gain confidence in their understanding ahead of Year 6 and the KS2 SATs . Their focus is on retrieval practice – going over topics that children should already have covered and helping them strengthen their knowledge and understanding.

Most of our worksheets come in pdf format, and all of them are printable. But if you’re running out of printer ink, they can be viewed online too.

Every Year 5 maths test or worksheet comes with its own answer sheet, and guidance from the National Curriculum is included wherever it might be needed (for example, if there might be more than one correct answer for a question). Some worksheets also include model answers to help children break down the best way to solve a problem.

Note: The National Curriculum does not specify any place value teaching for Year 5. However this is often a good time to begin revising the topic (among others) in preparation for the KS2 SATs. Have a look at these place value worksheets as part of your revision.

Similarly, addition and subtraction work is largely an extension of what was covered in previous years. Take a look at our collection of addition and subtraction worksheets for practice materials for these topics.

Both papers should take about one hour to complete, and cover every part of the curriculum, from place value to geometry and 3d shapes. This makes them useful for checking children’s overall understanding of the maths they’ve learned in Year 5, as well as providing them with exam practice.

Money Worksheets

Welcome to the money worksheets page at Math-Drills.com where you will not be short-changed! This page includes Money worksheets for counting coins and for operations with Dollars, Euros, and Pounds.

Students encounter money early on, and they must be able to manage it themselves in their everyday lives and into adulthood. There are many activities that you can do related to counting, adding, and subtracting money, so save some coins or purchase some play money to complete some of the activities on the money math worksheets below.

The policies of the United States Mint and the European Central Bank allow us to use their coin images on our worksheets. The Canadian coin images are used with permission from the Royal Canadian Mint. Permission to use Australian currency coin designs was obtained from the Royal Australian Mint.

Counting U.S. Coins

Counting Coins Worksheets

money homework year 5

This is a great place to start with younger students as they are likely to encounter coins before they encounter too many bills. Including children in money transactions helps them to develop important money management skills and has benefits in other math topics such as fractions.

Until everyone starts paying with their smart phones and microchips in their fingers, coins are still a thing. The U.S. Mint still makes billions of coins every year and children will probably encounter them very early on in their life. Knowing how much money you have in coins can be accomplished with a coin counting machine, or it can be accomplished with some mental math.

Rounding Money Amounts

money homework year 5

The next dollar up is a skill for young students who are not yet able to make change, but can determine how many dollars it will take to cover an amount. For example, if something is $5.45 in a store, then they would need to give $6 to cover that amount since the next dollar up from $5.45 is $6. Students should understand that any amount above zero after the decimal means they need to add another dollar to the number before the decimal in order to have enough to pay for the item. The rest of the worksheets in this section are general rounding questions involving dollar amounts.

Adding and Subtracting Money

money homework year 5

Adding money amounts is a nice way to gently move students into thinking about decimals and what a great opportunity to use some manipulatives. Students generally perform better with math that has meaning. Decimal numbers to hundredths have most likely been in students' lives since very early on as stores display prices, parents comment about the prices to help develop critical thinking in their children, so if there is one decimal that students understand well, it is money. They sometimes have trouble relating it to paper and pencil which is why manipulatives come in handy. Play money is a little cheaper than real money and doesn't disappear quite as quickly.

The strategy of choice for subtracting money is the counting up strategy. It works especially well for giving change from whole dollar/Pound/Euro amounts. Following is an example of how it works. Let's say the bill at the grocery store came out to $13.46 and the cashier was presented with a $20.00 bill and for some odd reason, the monitor on his cash machine had a crack in it that obscured the amount of change to give. What would he do?! The first thing to do is to take four cents out of the drawer because he needs to add the $13.46 to an unknown amount to make $20, and four cents will bring the $13.46 up to $13.50 which makes things rounder and, for most, a little easier. Next, he needs to pull out two quarters to bring the amount up to $14 even. He can then remove a dollar bill to make the amount $15, and finally pull out a $5 bill to count up to $20. Now, if he wanted to know how much change he gave, he just needs to think back to what he pulled out of the drawer: $5 + $1 + $0.50 + $0.04 = $6.54.

Multiplying and Dividing Money

money homework year 5

It would be nice if our own money could multiply quite as nicely in our bank accounts as it does on these worksheets. Alas, we will have to settle with low interest rates multiplying our money over the span of decades. These multiplying money worksheets would go well with some money manipulatives. Simply make several piles of the same amount (the same number of piles as the multiplier), combine it all into one pile, regroup as much as possible (e.g. five ones into a five), and count up the results.

Money Maths Worksheets for Year 1 (age 5-6)

This is a really practical topic, so why not get out the coins and use them to count up, including counting mixed coins of 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 20p. When confident with counting coins then move on to shopping and giving change.  Counting notes has now been introduced to the year 1 curriculum so why not use our great turtle notes to help count in fives, tens, twenties and fifties? We have lots of colourful counting money worksheets and shopping questions, but it is also well worth having your own little shop where small items can be 'bought and sold'.

Counting money (coins) and making amounts

At first children will count using 1p and 2p coins to make totals up to 10p. Later the 5p and 10p coin can be introduced.

Solving simple problems, such as finding more coins to make 10p, can be done practically. As confidence grows totals up to 20p can be used.

This has provided to introduce the topics covered in the worksheet for those that might be unfamiliar but also as a quick revision tool for those that would like a quick refresher before accessing the worksheet.

Money Problems Explained

Money problems importance.

Money is one of the most important real life applications of maths, we use money most days and it is therefore important that children understand what money is, how it is used and the various other aspects of money. Money is also a useful teaching tool as it combines many of the other skills learnt during the primary curriculum such as addition and subtraction and digits and decimals.

Money Fundamentals

  • Understanding the importance of value and that each coin is worth a certain amount. Building on this, it is also important that children understand that multiple smaller amount coins are equal to single larger amount coins e.g. £1 is worth ten 10p pieces and that are various ways to make up the same amount using a range of coins e.g. £1 is also equal to two 50p pieces.
  • Finding change. Using subtraction to give and receive the correct change whilst completing a transaction.
  • Money related vocabulary. It is important that children understand words such as ‘change’, ‘spent’ or ‘gave’.

Money in KS1

Here children are introduced to the concept of money and how we can use addition and subtraction to calculate different amounts. They also begin to understand the value of coins and how many of one coin is equal to another coin as well as the purpose of using larger value coins. Children will also begin to calculate change through simple role-play transactions.

Money in KS2

Building on what they have learnt in KS1, children will now start to use the monetary decimal system learning that one pound and eleven pence can be written as £1.11 or 111p for example. Using multiple stage transaction problems they will become confident with how to calculate change and using money to buy items, this also familiarising them with the monetary terminology mentioned above.
