Just keep each paragraph focused on one main success story about the positive impact you left in the industry. Oh, and always provide metrics like customer feedback ratings, sales percentages, or efficiency ratings to give your claims substance.

Make sure you add a spritz of desirable traits or skills that connect with the job and the establishment as a whole. And don’t forget your call to action, which should invite further discussion of your waitress qualifications.

What to Include in Your Resume and Cover Letter

Are you applying for a job as a waiter or waitress? For some restaurant positions, you will apply by completing an online application, or you may be required to apply in person. For others, you may be required to submit a resume and cover letter for consideration, including your waiter or waitressing skills.

When you write a cover letter for a waitstaff job, it's important to highlight the skills you have that match the job requirements listed in the job posting. Your resume should include your most relevant work experience, typically in reverse chronological order.

Here's information on what to include in your resume, tips for writing resumes and cover letters that will get your application noticed, examples, and templates to download.

Highlight your customer service skills .  Restaurant managers are eager to hire front-of-house staff who understand the importance of providing exemplary customer service to guests.

Emphasize your dedication to creating positive guest experiences, your proactiveness in identifying diners’ needs, and your tact in responding to difficult customers.

Remember the importance of soft skills. Not only must waitstaff have exemplary customer service skills, but they must also demonstrate soft skills such as dependability, timeliness, flexibility in being available for different shifts, and a solid work ethic.

Match your skills to the job. Review this  list of skills required for waitstaff jobs  before you get started, then take the time to match your qualifications to the job. This way, your application materials will show the employer that you're a qualified candidate for the position.

Include all relevant experience.  Provide descriptions of your previous restaurant jobs, accompanied by bulleted statements about your achievements and significant contributions in each role. Also mention any restaurant point-of-sale (POS) systems or other computer technologies you are familiar with.

Detail your education and certifications. In the “Education” section of your resume, list any college degrees you hold or are currently pursuing. You should also mention any SafeServ, MAST, or other industry-specific certifications you have earned.

Tailor each resume to the job.  Both your resume and your cover letter should be revised to speak to the specific requirements of different employers. Read the job posting carefully, and then make sure your resume emphasizes the qualifications most valued by the employer.

A good way to do this is to include keywords in your resume from the job listing. Highlight the important words in the job listing (including qualifications, skills, etc.) and include them in your resume to demonstrate that you are a desirable candidate for the position.

Include examples.  Review these resume and cover letter templates to learn what information you should include, how to present your most relevant experiences, and how to make your application stand out from the competition. You can then use them as a basis for your own documents, personalizing them to reflect your own training and experience.

Consider the format.  There is no single “perfect” format for a resume. Although most employers expect to receive resumes where one’s experience is presented in reverse-chronological order, you may find that a  different format  would work better for you, depending on the position you are applying for, your work history, or your level of experience.

Proofread and Edit.  Your resume and cover letter need to be letter-perfect. Take the time to thoroughly edit your resume, correcting any spelling or grammar errors (or have a competent friend do this for you if you feel unsure about your grammatical skills). The formatting also needs to be consistent, with the same style of bullet points used throughout and the same size font for all of your section headings.

Those job seekers will send in a letter of intent rather than a  cover letter . In this article, we’ll take a look at what a letter of intent is and highlight some strategies for writing the best LOI you can. We’ve even included a template to help you get started.

A letter of intent is a less common way of expressing interest in a company. It targets reasons you’re looking for opportunities with a specific organization.

A letter of intent does include elements of a traditional cover letter, such as relevant experience and skills, but it’s used in slightly different contexts. LOIs emphasize alignment between a job seeker and an organization.

There are a few key differences between a  cover letter  and a letter of intent, including:

Context. While a cover letter responds to a specific job listing, a letter of intent targets an organization more generally. It may or may not have a specific job opening at the time that the LOI is sent in.

Focus. A cover letter explains why an applicant is a  good fit for a specific role . An LOI, on the other hand, addresses an individual’s compatibility with an overall organization or more general role.

Initiative. A cover letter is a reactive document responding to a job opening. A letter of intent, however, demonstrates more initiative and provides information before an organization specifically requests it.

Letter of intent and  letter of interest  are often used interchangeably. While there are a lot of similarities between the two documents, there are also a few key differences:

Level of intent. Letters of intent have a high level of intentionality, while letters of interest are more exploratory. A letter of intent proposes action, while letters of interest are for information gathering.

Commitment level. A letter of intent is a high-commitment way of expressing interest in a company, while a letter of interest is a lower commitment. An individual is more likely to send out multiple letters of interest. 

Action orientation. A letter of intent always ends with a call to action, while a letter of interest is more laid-back and may not request anything specific from the recipient.

While both letters demonstrate initiative and are closely tailored to the company, they do serve slightly different purposes.

There are lots of scenarios where a job seeker may want to send out a letter of intent. Here are a few examples: 

You have a high level of interest in a specific company, but there’s not an open role.

You are interested in networking with a company in a committed way.

You want to reach out with a formal follow-up after a networking event.

You’re applying to a highly competitive field.

You’re aware of a potential job opportunity with an organization that hasn’t been published yet.

Additionally, students or job seekers switching industries may use letters of intent to apply to educational opportunities like internships and apprenticeships — though those may also be called  cover letters . 

How to Write a Letter of Intent

There are plenty of ways to approach writing a letter of intent for a job. Here’s a step-by-step process for writing your LOI draft:

1. Provide your contact information.  

At the top of your LOI, you’ll want to provide contact information so your recipient can contact you about future opportunities. This can include your phone number, email, and address.

2. Use an appropriate greeting.

For some opportunities, a formal greeting is appropriate. In other situations, a more informal approach may be ideal. If possible, address the specific recipient. 

3. Provide an introduction.  

In the intro paragraphs, you’ll want to tap into three specifics:

Who you are.

Why you’re reaching out.

How you got this company’s information.

Feel free to vary the order of this information. Your LOI intro may be formal or more playful, depending on who you are and the organization you’re submitting to.

4. Dive into your strengths and company alignment.  

An LOI is created to clearly convey why you’re a good fit for the organization. In the body paragraphs of your letter, you’ll want to explain:

• Your strengths.
• What you do.
• How those things would fit with the organization.

5. Guide the conversation into the future.  

All LOIs end with a call to action, which is one of the things that differentiates it from a letter of interest or a cover letter. Map out potential next steps so it’s easy for the reader to take action. It could include:

A request to schedule a meeting.

Making a specific pitch.

Encouraging the recipient to send a follow-up email.

6. Write a thoughtful conclusion .

Conclude your LOI by reiterating your interest in the company. Make sure to thank the recipient for their time, too — there wasn’t a job opening request, so they took time out of their day to read your letter.

If you’re sending your LOI because of an internal referral, be sure to reference them within the letter. 

Let’s go through a few different samples of LOIs and highlight what each does well. Refer to these samples as you draft your own letter of intent for guidance on incorporating the elements of an LOI seamlessly.

Internal Connection

In this letter of intent, Jennifer leverages an internal connection. This is a great way to earn a few extra points when explaining how you know about the business. Beyond that, Jennifer’s experiences align well with the work that the wine bar does.

What I like:  This letter of intent does a great job of personalization, weaving through the internal connection perfectly in a few different spots. A referral is a powerful aid to incorporate into an LOI, and Jennifer did a great job dropping hints of her connection.

Making a Pitch

What I like:  In this letter, Mark is making a pitch. He still covers the bases of a great LOI — discussing his strengths and alignment with the brand. But instead of just calling for a meeting, he makes a pitch that is specific to the organization. This provides value to the recipient and makes Mark look like a strong collaborator.

Diving Into Alignment

Letters of intent are standard documents, so you don’t need to worry about reinventing the wheel each time you send one. Use this template as a resource to ensure your letter includes all the important parts.

The Fed is meeting this week. Here's what experts are saying about the odds of a rate cut.

Americans are bearing the financial burden of higher costs for every type of loan , from mortgages to credit cards, after two years of interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. With the central bank meeting Wednesday, economists and consumers alike have one question on their minds: When will the central bank start cutting rates? 

The answer: Almost certainly not this month, and probably not at its next meeting, according to Wall Street forecasters.

Most economists polled by financial data company FactSet think the Fed will keep its benchmark rate steady on Wednesday, as well as at its following meeting on May 1. Consumers holding out for lower borrowing costs may have to wait until the following month for relief, with about half of economists now penciling in the Fed's June 12 meeting for the first cut in four years, FactSet data shows. 

The Fed kicked off its flurry of rate hikes in March 2022 as inflation soared during the pandemic, reaching a 40-year high in June of that year. Although inflation has rapidly cooled since then, it remains higher than the Fed would like, which is why economists believe the central bank will keep rates steady this week.

That doesn't mean that the Fed won't say anything noteworthy. Experts said the Fed's latest economic outlook could provide hints about when rate relief might be in the cards.

"The Fed is going to be taking a lot of the oxygen out of the room this week as they conclude their March meeting on Wednesday afternoon," said Sam Millete, director of fixed income at Commonwealth Financial Network, in an email. "We've seen some mixed economic data to start the year. It's going to be interesting to see how the Fed reacts to that, especially in Fed Chair Jerome Powell's post-meeting press conference."

Here's what to know about Wednesday's Fed meeting and what it means for your money. 

When is the Fed meeting this week?

The Federal Reserve's Open Market Committee meets on March 19-20. The rate-setting panel will announce its rate decision at 2 p.m. Eastern time on March 20.  

Chairman Jerome Powell will hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday to discuss the FOMC's rate decision and provide information on the central bank's outlook.

When and by how much will the Fed cut interest rates?

The Fed on Wednesday is expected to maintain the federal funds rate in a range of 5.25% to 5.5%.

The question is whether the central bank might provide guidance about the expected timing of what would mark the first rate cut since March 2020, when the economy was in free fall due to the pandemic, prompting the Fed to slash borrowing costs to buoy the economy. 

On Wednesday, analysts expect Powell to reiterate that the Fed wants to see continued improvement in its battle against inflation before cutting rates.

"The Fed will keep their forward guidance unchanged while stressing that they need further evidence that inflation is on a sustainable path toward their 2% target before cutting interest rates," Ryan Sweet, chief U.S. economist with Oxford Economics, told investors on Monday in a report. 

Economists still think the Fed could cut rates several times in 2024, although some economists are now projecting fewer reductions than they had forecast earlier. For instance, Goldman Sachs on Monday said it is penciling in three cuts in 2024, down from its earlier forecast for four cuts this year.

That change is "mainly because inflation has been a bit firmer than we expected," Goldman Sachs economists said in a research note.

What is the inflation rate in 2024?

In February, consumer prices rose  3.2% on an annual basis , faster than January's 3.1% pace and well above the 2% target sought by the Fed. 

To be sure, inflation has cooled considerably after touching a four-decade peak of 9.1% in June 2022, but it remains higher than its pre-pandemic levels of about 2% and represents one reason why economists believe the Fed will push back rate cuts until at least June.

If inflation is down, why isn't the Fed cutting rates?

Powell has repeatedly noted that cutting rates too soon could spark a resurgence of inflation, causing more financial pain for consumers and businesses.

"The Fed does not want to repeat the same mistake made in the 1970s by declaring that they have conquered inflation too soon, only to have it reemerge," said Villanova University economics professor Victor Li, a former senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, in an email.

He added, "But the Fed knows they can sabotage the soft landing that they created by holding rates too high for too long and causing a recession."

The good news, said LendingTree economist Jacob Channel, is that the Fed also isn't likely to raise rates even with  inflation cooling less quickly than investors had hoped and amid signs that economic growth remains robust.

"Fortunately, while cuts might still be a few months (or more) off, it doesn't look like the Fed is going to raise rates again anytime soon," Channel said in an email. "We'd need to see inflation growth pick up far more steam that it currently has before the Fed starts seriously considering more hikes."

How will the Fed's rate decision affect your money?

If the Fed keeps its benchmark rate steady on Wednesday, borrowing costs will remain high, impacting everything from credit card rates to loans for auto purchases or homes , experts say. Credit card APRs, for instance, are at their highest levels since the Fed started tracking them in 1994, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

There is a one upside to elevated interest rates: Savers can get robust returns by parking their money in high-yield savings accounts or CDs .

"Some of the highest CD rates are found in shorter-terms right now, so they remain accessible if you need access to the cash in 6 months or one year's time," noted Elizabeth Renter, data analyst at NerdWallet, in an email.

Dr. Laure DeMattia, a bariatric medicine specialist in Norman, Oklahoma, feels the frustration of her patients as they struggle to lose weight. 

Almost all of her patients at a weight-loss clinic in the suburbs south of Oklahoma City could be helped by the new class of medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy — if they could afford them. 

“My patients have already done Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem. They’ve done the high protein, low carb,” she said. “They’ve already done as much as they thought was physically possible to alter their diet and exercise.” 

What many of them haven’t done is take a monthly injection of semaglutide or tirzepatide. DeMattia can give them a prescription for Wegovy or Zepbound, but that’s just the beginning. They then face a complicated, often frustrating battle to pay for the expensive medications . 

“Our Medicare and Medicaid populations are some of the most at-risk and they do not have access to any anti-obesity medication,” she said. 

About half of the adults in the United States have obesity or are severely obese, a crisis that means more people are at risk of heart disease, diabetes or some types of cancer. 

According to new data, there are stark geographic and racial disparities in who is able to get their hands on semaglutide , the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy.

An estimated 85% of semaglutide prescriptions were dispensed to white people across the country, results from an analysis of more than 4 million prescriptions written nationwide for the drug in 2023 showed.  According to the health care analytics company PurpleLab, Black adults, who have significantly higher rates of diabetes and obesity, received around 12% of the prescriptions.

In the seven years since semaglutide was approved for diabetes, the new class of weight-loss drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are increasingly hailed as a revolution in the treatment for obesity. Celebrities like billionaire Oprah Winfrey show off their trimmer bodies as they tout the drugs. 

Yet, in 2023, only 1% of the U.S. population with government or private insurance had a prescription filled for semaglutide, the most popular of the weight-loss medications, according to the PurpleLab analysis.

So much for the revolution.

The high cost of the drugs makes them almost unattainable for many of the people who need them the most. Insurance companies typically refuse to reimburse the around $1,000 monthly cost of the injections or, when they do pay, put up high barriers to authorizing payments. 

“A lot of what we do with obesity management is more for, I wouldn’t say the elites, but people who actually have better insurance and can get it covered,” said Dr. Peminda Cabandugama, an endocrinologist at the Cleveland Clinic. 

Latest news on weight loss drugs

The data didn’t include other weight loss medications, including Eli Lilly’s Zepbound, which has only been available since December, or Mounjaro, the diabetes version of the drug tirzepatide. 

Oklahoma — with an adult obesity rate of 40%, the third highest in the U.S. — doesn’t even crack the top 25 states for semaglutide prescriptions.

Dr. Ryan Morgan, an obesity medicine physician at Vitalis Metabolic Health in Oklahoma, said there is some “weight based discrimination” where health providers don’t see obesity as a chronic disease. He also noted that many insurers don’t cover the cost of the medication because it’s too expensive, something he often has to tell his patients.

“I tell them, I could send it and it’s probably 99.9% going to get denied,” he said. “It feels like my tools are being taken away from me.”

Unlike Oklahoma, West Virginia has comparatively high prescription rates. The state has the highest adult obesity rate in the nation but ranks in second spot for semaglutide prescriptions, according to PurpleLab. The relatively high rate of prescriptions could be due to West Virginia covering the cost of the medications for its state employees. 

In February, that ended.

Dr. Laura Davisson, director of West Virginia University’s medical weight management program, said it’s a challenge to help her patients pay for the drugs. 

“We really have it within our power now to potentially turn around the health of this country,” but patients being unable to meet the expense, “means we’re going to increase the health care disparities.”

Why not invest on "the front end"?

Liz Shumate, a 41-year-old mental health therapist from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has a family history of heart disease. She wants to lose about 20 pounds to help reduce her risk of health complications. Several diets and other lifestyle changes haven’t helped.

Shumate, who is Black, tried to get Wegovy or Zepbound, but the insurance she gets through her job denied her the coverage and she’s unable to afford the $1,000 monthly prescription.

She acknowledged that the situation is likely even more demoralizing for people with lower incomes.

“When we think about people being able to manage their weight in a healthy way that leads to better outcomes long terms, it just doesn’t make sense,” she said. “There’s an explanation for not covering it through insurance, but then we’ll cover open-heart surgery, or we’ll cover other lifesaving measures. Why don’t we invest that money on the front end?”

Susan Beam, 67, of Norman, Oklahoma, has high blood pressure and rheumatoid arthritis, which she says has been exacerbated by her excess weight.

She wants to be prescribed a weight loss medication, which her doctors say could help alleviate her conditions. However, Medicare denies coverage, leaving her unable to afford the high out-of-pocket cost of the drugs.

“It’s very frustrating,” said Beam, who has struggled with her weight for years. “It’s only accessible to certain people who realistically can afford to pay for it if their insurance doesn’t cover it. That certainly feels unfair.”

Will Medicare ever cover weight loss drugs?

Cabandugama, of the Cleveland Clinic, said that insurance companies often refuse to cover the cost of weight loss medications because obesity is still seen as a cosmetic issue, instead of a chronic disease.

Another barrier, he added, is a 2003 law that prohibits Medicare from covering weight loss drugs, cutting off a huge group of potential patients. Private insurance companies often take Medicare’s lead in deciding what to pay for.

“The problem has always been access,” Cabandugama said.

To be sure, more insurers could be persuaded to cover the drugs after the Food and Drug Administration expanded the approval of Wegovy to reduce heart attack and stroke risk. Drugmakers have been racing to prove that their drugs provide health benefits beyond weight loss and diabetes.

A spokesperson for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said in a statement that the agency is currently reviewing the FDA’s approval to expand the use of Wegovy to reduce heart attack and stroke risk. 

A growing number of employers are considering coverage of weight loss drugs in the future, said a spokesperson for America’s Health Insurance Plans, or AHIP, a trade group for the insurance industry. The group cited a report from 2023 that found 41% of employers cover weight loss medications.

“However, the exorbitant and unsustainable prices charged by manufacturers — more than $1,000 per month — and lack of competition pose continued barriers to access,” the spokesperson said. 

If there's no insurance coverage, it's over

Dr. Drake Bellanger, an obesity medicine specialist at the Louisiana Center for Bariatrics in Baton Rouge, worries about losing patients because of the cost of the drugs. 

“You’ll see a fairly high no-show rate,” he said. “Patients kind of just not showing up. And those are the patients usually, if I look back in their chart, these medications were denied and we had to go to the more the older medications that they may have been on before and you could tell they basically just gave up.”

Davisson, of West Virginia University, said the patients she sees have had a lifetime of weight problems and have tried other options.

“If there’s no insurance coverage, then generally the conversation is over,” she said. “That’s just really, really disappointing.”
