Essay on “a narrow escape” for students and children, best essay, paragraph, speech for class 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12., a narrow escape.

There was a huge three-acre pond just a few kilometers from where we stayed. Since moving into our new home in the countryside, my brother, Jim and I used to often sneak out to the pond where we would meet another friend. Dad had warned us not to venture anywhere near the pond area, especially after a friend informed him that an alligator had been spotted there. We took no heed of his advice though. This was our favorite hideout and we were certainly not going to give it up.

On this particular afternoon, the three of us had just finished swimming. Jim and Syed were reluctantly making their way towards the spot where they had left their clothes. I stayed back and was bathing in the waist-deep water when I suddenly became aware of ripples forming on the surface of the water. I cocked my head and looked at the ripples. My eyes caught a motion in the water. A log, I thought. Then I saw it — its snout and its two reptilian eyes. ‘Jim …” I whimpered. Then I screamed with all my might.

Jim turned his head in my direction and immediately recognized the danger. ‘Get out of the water, Jeff. Hurry! It’s just behind you.’

I waded clumsily in the water. After a few stumbles and fumbles, I reached the edge of the pond. I looked over my shoulder. Moving swiftly towards me was an enormous alligator. I froze. Then suddenly I felt a searing pain in my leg. Meanwhile, Jim and Syed screamed and started throwing stones at the alligator and managed to distract it. The alligator went for them now. As it opened its jaws, I could see its jagged teeth. I tried to move but a stabbing pain shot through me. I slumped onto the ground, sprawled in a pool of blood.

Meanwhile, our screams were heard by two hunters who were in the vicinity. On seeing the alligator, one of them fired a shot in the air. It had the desired effect. The alligator stopped in his tracks, retreated a few steps, and slithered hurriedly into the water. Then, I passed out.

When I regained consciousness, I found myself in a totally unfamiliar environment. The smell of antiseptic told me that I was in the hospital. I later learned from my mother that I was rushed to the casualty ward. I was treated for puncture wounds on my right ankle and a long gash which required fifty-six stitches. Mum reminded me how fortunate I was to have escaped from the jaws of the alligator. It was a narrow escape.

By Patrick Carpen: The Greatest Writer On Earth

A Narrow Escape by Errika Bezerra

This page was first published on the 2nd of April, 2017 and last updated on the 2nd of April, 2017 by Patrick Carpen.

The Anteater which attacked Errika   The following short story, entitled “A Narrow Escape” was submitted by 14 year old Errika Bezerra, a Grade 9 Student of CXC English at St. Ignatius Secondary School in Rupununi, Guyana, South America.   Have fun reading and enjoy!

I was born at the Georgetown Public Hospital Cooperation. I grew up at lot 14 Sachi Bazar Street, Parshad Nagar. My young life began under the watchful eyes of my loving parents. As a young girl growing up, my heart always filled with excitement and joy whenever my grandparents invited me to visit the Zoo. There I my eyes feasted on macaws, lions, jaguars, large anacondas, land and water turtles and the Mighty Harpy Eagle. On these visits, I was always warned by my grandfather about the dangers of feeding the birds and monkeys who always want a nut or a sweetie.

I was thirteen years of age when my grandparents moved back to Lethem to reside and I moved along with them. My grandparents are descendants of Amerindian tribes and as such they love moving from one area to another. Presently they have relocated to an area known as Mountain Point Road Junction. Here they are planning to build a small ranch. It was there on one of my visits that I first saw wild animals roaming the savannahs. Animals such as jaguar, fox and mountain dare. It was at mountain point road junction I first crossed paths with a wild animal: a mother anteater.

I had gone for a weekend visit at the Junction. Mountain Point Ranch house is nestled on low, swampy, grass lands. Lofty mountains to the north, the Sheriri mountain range to the west, to the south are hills and open savannahs rolling as far as the eyes can see. To the east are highly forested rock and gravel hills. Mikey, the ranch dog, was five years old and brown in color. He is mix-breed from the family of pit bulls. After helping in the kitchen, I would take Mikey for an afternoon walk. It was a cool breezy afternoon around 17:00 hours, when I walked out on the jeep road with Mikey. My grandfather saw that I was going out and warned me to be careful of rattle snakes which inhabit the immediate savannahs. After 10 minutes of strolling along the road, I noticed Mikey getting excited. He picked up a scent which led him towards the western direction. There were a clump of Kayambi trees, usually known as sand paper leaf tree. He ran and started barking at this point. I called on him to return to me, but my efforts were futile. The next thing I saw was a dark brown, hairy, long bushy tail with white stripes on the forelegs materializing from a clump of tall Dare Grass. It was heading towards me with Mikey at its side barking constantly.

There I was standing motionlessly in view of the now approaching animal. It was a mother anteater, she had a baby anteater clawed on her back, frightened by the continuous barking from Mikey. With terrifying eyes I saw the front paws of the animal curving into a boxing position towards my dog. I quickly realized that its powerful paws were trying to grab my dog. Just as it was about to attack, I let out a terrifying scream. The anteater stopped suddenly, raised it heads and looked at me, anger boiling in its eyes. As the anteater turned its attention towards me, I turned around and started to run. But, as fast as lightning, the animal was gaining grounds on me. Exhausted, at the end of my breath, I looked around for some sort of weapon to defend myself. I found a piece of wood geared and myself for the attack. I had no time to defend myself. Before I knew it, the deadly creature boxed me down. A pair of horrifying claws and eyes embraced me. I thought I was about to die. I tried to scream but no words escaped. At that moment I heard a loud “boom”. My mind went blank.

The next thing I heard was a voice saying “it’s gone, you’re safe.”

It was my grandfather’s consoling voice. He had narrowly snatched me from the long sharp claws of the now dead mother anteater.

We returned home and took dinner after my grandmother tucked me into bed. I was getting a high fever as I pass on to dreamland. After this incident my grandfather put up a sign saying “BEWARE OF WILD ANIMALS.”

The Fresh Answers

Write an original short story entitled: “A Narrow Escape”.

A narrow escape.

It was a fine Sunday morning. Mr. Miller had a quick breakfast and left his house at eight O’clock in his car. He was on this way to visit his sister’s home. She lived in a small village some miles away from the town.

Mr. Miller was in high spirits. It was a peaceful morning. The birds were chirping and the cattle were grazing in the meadows. He whistled a merry tune as he drove past the glades and the stream.

He had hardly covered ten miles when the car stopped. It was surprising indeed, as he had had the car overhauled only a fortnight ago. Getting down, he opened the bonnet. The fan belt had slipped out of its groove. He fixed the belt, closed the bonnet and again resumed the journey.

Soon he pushed the nagging worry to the back of his mind. He did not really anticipate any more trouble. The merry tune came back on his lips once more. He waved to a few children playing in the fields who also waved back in turn.

He was approaching an unmanned railway crossing. He looked to his left and then to his right. There was no sign of a train. He was also in the middle of the crossing when his car gave a cough and stopped there. Mr. Miller was dismayed. He hopped out and opened the bonnet again. This time he failed to locate the trouble. He tried to push the car but all in vain. It refused to budge an inch. Tired and frustrated, he sat down. As he was pondering over this misfortune, he heard the whistle of an approaching train. Mr. Miller got shocked. Paralysed with fear, he did not know what to do. He was rooted to the ground and stared at the train coming close and close. His mind stopped functioning. He was immobilized. Beads of perspiration appeared all over his face.

Just then a truck came by. The driver and his helper, realizing the need for quick action, got down from the truck and ran to Mr. Miller’s help. The driver pushed the car roughly away from the track and got behind the wheel while his helper pushed. He steered the car safely out of the tracks. Just then the train whizzed past.

What was Mr. Miller doing then? With the hard shove that he had received, his senses returned and he jumped clear out of the level crossing. There were simply no words to express his gratitude to the truck driver and his helper. They were a godsend. Mr. Miller clutched their hands warmly. His expression said it all. Mr. Miller had had a narrow escape.

Many thanks to Cherry Provost for her significant contribution to Lenana Girls High School in Kitale, Kenya. Cherry is on the Board of Directors of Lift the Lid and has been a Trustee of several esteemed art and educational institutions. She has served on the Board of Governors for The National Arts Club in Manhattan and was also the President of their Literary Committee. With Cherry’s donation, we have met our goal of $500, completing our latest fundraiser,  The Miracle Project. The next step will be to supply 30 girls at Lenana with menstrual cups — the most cost-effective and reliable (not to mention eco-friendly) answer to menstruation.

This is a big step for the girls, most of whom cannot afford sanitary napkins and are missing school each month. To show appreciation, we would like to share Favour Wamui’s essay “A Narrow Escape from Being Kidnapped.” Favour made the mistake of accepting a ride to school from strangers. We are grateful she is with us and able to write about her experience, warning other girls not to accept rides from strangers and to walk in pairs or a group whenever possible.

This is Lift the Lid’s first time supplying menstrual cups to the students we support, and we have not yet decided on a company with which to collaborate. More posts will follow, including testimony from the girls at Lenana. Thank you to Cherry and to all the donors for getting us this far!

Thank you for subscribing!

In college, there are many instances where you may be required to write a 250-word essay – your application, exam questions, small writing prompts, etc. A 250-word limit may seem like a novel to some, but others find it difficult to get their point across with so few words. In this guide, we will look at a 250-word essay example, along with tips on how to write a great 250-word essay.   Bonus: Need to write a longer essay? See this guide on how to write a 500-word essay

The Basic Format of a 250-Word Essay

All essays consist of the same three parts: an introduction with a thesis, a body paragraph or body paragraphs that support the thesis, and a concluding paragraph that summarizes the overall essay.

In 250 words, you will most likely have 3-4 paragraphs in total, each with 50-100 words. This will allow for 3-5 concise but detailed sentences per paragraph.

A Step-by-Step 250-Word Essay Example

To help visualize this process, let’s go ahead and write a simple 250-word essay.  You’ll see our writing sample in green and our explanation of what we did (and what can be done) with each section in normal text.

Without further ado, let’s get started on our essay!

TOPIC:  How has your family upbringing influenced your educational goals?

Step 1 – Write Your Thesis

Your thesis is the first thing you should consider in your essay. Simply put, it’s the main idea of your essay that will control everything else you write. If you could summarize the question in just one sentence, how would you do it?

For our topic   How has your family upbringing influenced your educational goals?  our thesis will be:

My parents saw little value in a formal education. It was their lack of passion that led me to my educational goals.

Step 2 – Write Your Introduction

In the introduction, the first sentence can be a broad or general statement that sets the tone for the piece. It is usually supported by a second sentence that leads into the thesis. The optional third sentence may pose a question that the thesis aims to answer, or it may prompt the reader to think about the topic in a different light. The final sentence of the intro paragraph clearly establishes the thesis.

As a general rule of thumb, the introduction should go from broad to specific, sentence by sentence, gradually leading up to your thesis. Here’s a sample example of an introductory paragraph.

Parents are supposed to push you past your goals, or at least, that’s what I always believed. I was raised in the generation of “you can do anything if you put your mind to it.” My parents did not follow that philosophy, and they saw little value in a formal education. It was their lack of passion that led me to my educational goals.

Word count:  Introductory paragraph, 64 words.

Step 3 – Write The Body Paragraph(s)

Next, we’ll continue with the body paragraph. Remember, body paragraphs should support the thesis and be about 3-5 sentences or 50-100 words long. In a short essay you may opt for only one body paragraph but in a longer one you may need more.

So how should your body paragraphs support your thesis? Think of each body paragraph as an argument that supports it.

Working with our thesis   “My parents never saw the value of formal education and that’s what lead me to my educational goals” , then each paragraph could be about   how not seeing the value of formal education led to the writer pursuing it.

For example, maybe the writer didn’t want to end up in the same work as their parents. Or maybe it was the parents’ lack of belief in the writer that pushed them to pursue a better future.

Let’s have a look at what a body paragraph can look like for our 250 word essay.

From as far back as I can remember, I knew I didn’t want to follow in the footsteps of my parents, at least not when it came to work. My father had worked on the family farm all his life and my mother had been a housewife since graduation. They were both content with the simplicity of their lives and wanted the same for me. I remember my father telling me that college was “expensive and a waste of four years”.  I knew however, that I wanted a career in the city that would be more challenging than simple farm life could provide. The only way to make that possible would be through formal education and a college degree.

Word count:  Body paragraph 119 words. Total essay is now 181 words.

Step 4 – Summarize with a Conclusion

The final paragraph is the conclusion. You may start this paragraph with “To summarize,” “As evident by X, Y, and Z,”  or a similar statement that highlights the biggest points in your essay. Use the conclusion paragraph to sum up the main point of your essay using different words. The last sentence can be something broad that leaves the reader wondering. Let’s see how we can write a conclusion for our sample essay.

While my parents may not understand the value of formal education, I know it is essential for my future. This has helped me immensely, by making me realize that without strong parental support, I’m the only one who’s responsible for my own goals. In a way this has been the strongest source of motivation. And for that, I am forever grateful.

Notice how we summarize the main point of the essay in the first sentence. We then connect the first sentence to the a conclusion we arrive at. Finally we end in an optimistic tone by stating how this has been helpful and we are grateful. Unlike the introduction paragraph, which flows from broad sentences to specific, a conclusion generally flows the opposite way, from specific sentences to broader concepts.

Word count: Concluding paragraph 61 words. Total essay is now 242 words.

Sure, we came up 8 words short. But being that close should not be considered an issue. If for some reason you are required to write 250 words minimum, you can make the essay longer by sprinkling in a few extra words.

The Entire 250-word Essay  Altogether

Parents are supposed to push you past your goals, or at least, that’s what I always believed. I was raised in the generation of “you can do anything if you put your mind to it.” My parents did not follow that philosophy, and they saw little value in a formal education. It was their lack of passion that led me to my educational goals. While my parents may not understand the value of formal education, I know it is essential for my future. This has helped me immensely by making me realize that without strong parental support, I’m the only one who’s responsible for my own goals. In a way this has been the strongest source of motivation. And for that, I am forever grateful.

Should I Write More Than 250 Words or Less Than 250 Words?

When a professor or college entry application asks for a “250 word essay,” 250 words is generally a rough guide. No one is going to fail you if you go over or under the limit by a few words. We’d say a good gauge is plus or minus 50 words. As a general rule of thumb though, try to stay as close to 250 words as possible without going too far over or under.

Essay Writing Tips

Here are some quick tips for writing a great 250-word essay:

  • Write the first draft from start to finish without any pauses. This will make the writing sound fluid, and you can make adjustments after that.
  • Avoid over-editing your work. Ideally, you should take a long pause between editing sessions so you can clear your head and come back with a fresh perspective.
  • Try not to think about the word count too much. Once you get in the habit of writing four 3-5 sentence paragraphs, you’ll find your words naturally get close to 250.
  • Don’t throw fluff sentences in your essay. Professors see right through those. Instead, think of an additional sentence to enhance the support in your body paragraphs.
  • If you feel like you have concisely and sufficiently answered the question below the word count, trust your gut. Most instructors will value quality over quantity.

The more 250-word essays you write, the easier they will become. Feel free to practice with free essay prompts online to train your brain to write with this rhythm. You’ll soon be able to whip out 250 words without checking your word count!

A narrow escape free

Despite their lack of education, these overseers have managed to preserve some of Canebrake’s history through their recordings. Canebrake had three overseers in total. The first overseer, although somewhat lenient, possessed records of numerous runaway slaves. However, he was eventually dismissed due to a decrease in crop yield. Dry. Carson failed to recognize the numerous obstacles that had a negative impact on crop production, such as spring floods, a severe windstorm, and the presence of boll weevils. Additionally, there was a shortage of slaves available to work on the crops. On the other hand, the second overseer proved to be a more organized and efficient manager.

According to his records, the slaves did not run away and there was an increase in cotton production. However, the specific reasons for his dismissal are not recorded. The third overseer appears to have been “borrowed” from elsewhere. In comparison to the previous overseers, Mr. Williams seemed more capable in performing his duties. Despite this, like many overseers during the antebellum period, Mr. Williams was harsh towards the slaves. Numerous white overseers have been depicted as vicious and wielding whips. These recordings shed light on the daily operations of a plantation. It is evident that Dr. Carson took a caring approach towards the functioning of his plantation.

Without paying upfront

He appeared unconcerned about the increased prices for slaves as his own slave prices were much lower. The labor force in Canebrake would have delighted Walt Disney! Each slave had a designated job in a specific area, and even when the weather was unfavorable, men were assigned alternate tasks. I discovered that female slaves were not limited to being cooks; many also worked in “the big house” and engaged in field work, sewing, and basket weaving. It was fascinating to observe how young slave children were entrusted with maintaining cleanliness of the grounds and handling other minor duties.

During the antebellum period, Canebrake’s cuisine reflected the typical foods of north Louisiana. The plantation grew vegetables like corn, Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, and field peas in its gardens. The meat supply consisted of hogs and beef cattle, which were slaughtered in winter and likely preserved in smoke houses due to the absence of refrigeration. As for clothing, the attire of Canebrake slaves was simple. Material was purchased, and female slaves made shirts, pants, and dresses. Furthermore, each year Dry. James Carbon’s overseer measured the slaves’ feet, and shoes were ordered accordingly.

Children did not have shoes. They had “mud boats” ordered for workers in the field. This indicates that Dr. Carson showed some care for his slaves. As a medical doctor, Dr. Carson attended to most of the medical needs of his slaves. However, slave women had to rely on a Negro midwife. It can be assumed that the midwife provided assistance in cases where Dr. Carson was not present. It is mentioned that Canebrake plantation supported religion for its slaves, further showcasing Carson’s compassion as a owner. Holidays were considered a “free” day for the slaves, during which they received special gifts and food. Canebrake operated on a monthly system.

From the first of the year until late August, various jobs were assigned, including manual labor tasks such as preparing land for planting crops and tending to them, as well as harvesting the crops. Unfortunately, like many antebellum plantations, Canebrake lost its grandeur during the Civil War. Daily journals and account books used by Canebrake’s overseers provide a glimpse into the everyday life on the plantation. While it may not offer the perspective of the slaves, it does provide valuable insights into recorded history.
