Avoid these con artists

Avoid these con artists, they are misleading the masses, they are bought and paid for by big firms so they will never disclose the truth for example its known BPA can effect breast cancer, have a look at what they say about BPA

The woman should not work with public

Went to donate extremely rare engineering books that my father owned . He lost his life last Christmas through depression. The woman said they would go in the bin . So I took them from there . I explained she needed to be a bit more tactful with her words after what had happened . She didn’t care at all even after I explained the situation . Won’t be going back there again .

Was in the Highgate shop in London I've been going in over 8 yrs with my dog small and today they said no doggy They will have no customers now

Went in to donate, treated like I was stealing

I went into the Shawlands branch to buy a DVD box set and at the same time donate some games and a wine rack. As soon as I entered, a male staff member told me to wait until he’d served customers, then came over, and asked “Can I ask what’s in the bag?” in a tone as if I was stealing from the shop rather than donating. I was then grilled as to whether the games I was donating were complete. He then pointed to the wine rack and said it was too big to take. I felt like The Accused in court rather than someone supplying their stock for free. I wasn’t expecting a knighthood for my donation, but genuine gratitude rather than suspicion would serve the organisation well. When I got home I found that one of the five DVDs was missing! I phoned the shop to suggest they show as much care over the quality of goods going out as they do over goods being donated, and he got very defensive, saying customers regularly steal from boxes and that he didn’t like my tone! They’ve had their last donation and last purchase from me!

Ambitious and world-class

VERY DISAPPOINTED.

I had about 100 pieces of new nappy changing large messenger bags from last year stock that I wanted to donate to THIS charity. I wanted them to pick them up as they were quite heavy - about 20 kg. I was shocked when I was told they only pick up clothes. These baby bags were retailing for about £25 in the shop. This means they rejected approimately £2500. I was rather disappointed by this. I have a shop and usually give away old seasons stock and would have been regularly donating to this charity but for this. A donation is a donation, why make a distinction between bags and shoes. Surely a begger can't be a chooser. I was drawn to this charity becasue an uncle recently died from bone marrow cancer. If they had put on their website what they accept and what they do not I would not have bothered. I have now donated them to another grateful charity.

I bought a very nice coat from C R UK, BUT…

I bought a very nice coat from CR UK (online) and didn't double check the size via the RETAILERS (MANGO) web site, but simply took CR UK's word (and measurements) at face value, that "L" was 48"...mistake, BIG mistake. CANCER RESEARCH measured the PARKER style coat "pit to pit", and came up with 48", so when it arrived and didn't fit? I checked the MANGO site size guide. And CR UK? when told that "L" was in fact a 42", and when asked why they don't refer to COMPANY size guides ?, said "that's the way we do it". Oh well...money on tap, so I guess they don't care how much is wasted in returns/lost sales etc. Oh they did relist/resell it...as a 46".

I decided to donate some clothes and furniture to Cancer research but had some issue with my car so I could not make the journey, luckily my local cancer research store were kind enough to pick up from my house the same day, and the staff were so kind and helpful.

Fantastic Service

Ever wondered why the rate of cancer is…

Ever wondered why the rate of cancer is now one in two people, which has increased dramatically over the last 30 years, CR spends very little on research, it’s wage bill is huge, the cost of raising the funds eats up a third of donations and no money is spent on educating people regarding diet, lifestyle and carcinogens. I’m in no doubt if money donated was invested in aforementioned, the rate of cancer would reduce more significantly than CR as a charity who so far can’t evidence any significant breakthroughs

Cancer Research UK is opening its Torquay superstore a week earlier than originally planned. The shop, at Wren Retail Park on the outskirts of the town, is the charity’s first superstore in Devon.

It was originally due to open its doors on April 12 but the charity has now confirmed that it will open on Thursday, April 6. A couple of long-term fundraisers will have the honour of cutting the ribbon to declare the store open at 10.30am.

At 10,000sq ft, it will be the biggest charity superstore in the region, selling everything from clothes and furniture to books and household items. In the unit next to Boots, which was formerly occupied by Outfit, the new superstore will have more than 14,000 items of clothing, DVDs, small electricals and homeware all under one roof. Most items, apart from furniture, electricals and new goods, will cost £5 or less.

Cancer Research UK has nearly 600 shops and superstores around the UK. The new superstore in Torquay will be open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

Overpriced Charity Shops

I have been to multiple Cancer Research UK charity shops and all of them have insane prices. They sell clothes for the same price you could get them new. Other than that, they stock decent quality items and have shops in good locations.

Expecting contractors to fund their projects

Recruited building services professionals to mange their shops, had works planned and instructed only to be told that they expect contractors to “fund” their projects on “good faith” and they will only have budget in April 2024 (2.5 months from now) to pay the contractors. Totally unreasonable and out of the blue, how such a big charity can operate with poor management is shocking.

Won’t go back in…

I had been a supporter of the shop in Ryde Isle of Wight for many years both donating and regularly purchasing items, they all knew my face because I was in so often. Back at the end of summer I purchased a dress which didn’t fit so had to return, then my 99 year old mother who I care for became ill and I was unable to go into town for two weeks, the manageress, Paula, said my time had run out the day before and refused a refund, she told me to write to head office who would definitely approve a refund, well I did write and they still refused! There are 11 charity shops in Ryde and this is the only one that has such a short returns policy, they were rigid and uncaring and I have never been in since, my donations and custom go elsewhere.

Keeping my money

Order a surgical bra and paid £6.99 for next day delivery. Two days later no sign of the bra nor confirmation of despatch. Received an automated email response to my emailed enquiry, saying expect a reply in 5 days. Call up, unhelpful woman … need to talk to despatch department can’t say when she’d have a reply, never mind when I could expect to receive the item I’d paid for. Asked for my order to be cancelled and a full credit, to which she replied it takes 15 days to process a refund. 15 days!!!! That’s not due to bank rules and process. That’s Cancer Research policy. A clear case of Cancer Research wilfully holding onto my money. So, long story short, I’m out of pocket for 15 days. Disgrace and has left a very unpleasant taste in my mouth for what I had previously thought was a wonderful charity and one for whom I have raised funds for over the years. They should be ashamed.

Prices too high …

Visited the Amersham shop today and found the prices extremely high! People go into a charity shop not only to support the charity but to pick up a bargain. Some of the second hand goods were dearer than they would be new. Needless to say I didn’t see anyone buy anything. These high prices aren’t doing the charity any favours. Won’t be returning!!

Changing shape of charity shops

People go into charity shops to get a bargain. If an item is, for instance, £2.80, why not make it £3 initially instead of asking customer to round up to £3, as directed by Head Office. Also asking people 'if they gift aid' is fine but 'do you pay tax' is not. That is an intrusive question, which I object to being asked. Staff should hand out a leaflet about gift aid for customer to read for themselves. Finally, most of the good quality donations don't reach the shop floor, but, go on eBay. I know Cancer Research has to rely on donations for their income but the shops are beginning to be run like businesses. Targets are expected to be reached.

Disappointed

I recently went to drop off some donations to the Bromsgrove branch, I called first to explain what I had got, I was asked what I was donating, after telling me they were very busy, I eventually got some help to bring the donations inside, and was told ‘we don’t want any more than that’! And was asked again, what was in the bags. I’ve never had this kind of issue before, I felt like taking it elsewhere where it might be a little more appreciated. CRUK has been an important charity for me in the past, I’m hoping that the member of staff was simply having a bad day.

Worthless charity

Cancer research UK does next to nothing in terms of cancer treatment. Most of the current treatments have not changed in 30 years. The fact remains that more people are dying of cancer than ever before. The CEO earns £240,000 plus per year, so if you like funding hefty salaries then please continue to donate. Having recently lost a family member to cancer, I realised that treatments available are virtually worthless. If you are young enough and fit enough to cope with chemotherapy, then you stand a fighting chance; but if you are old and weak then your chances of surviving cancer are almost zero.

A charity that’s willing to protect its partnership with a company that abuses terminal cancer patients on clinical drug trials

Human beings have a great capacity for wrongdoing. It’s an attribute that is unique in the world of life. We can and do make things worse, voluntarily, with full knowledge of what we are doing (as well as accidentally, and carelessly, and in a manner that is wilfully blind). – Jordan B. Peterson 2018 Having contacted the press department on several occasions both by phone and e-mail with regards to the deplorable way ScottishPower treated a terminal cancer patient on clinical drug trials; all they were willing to do was be silent. This charity doesn’t care about cancer patients or the way family/careers supporting those patients are treated.

Greed, money making no care for the people

Here goes , im sick and tired of you guys begging on tv its excessive. If you truely cared about people and cancer youd actually look into alternatives You'd look into cannabis Herbs like tumeric You'd look into other routes instead of solely basing it on kemo which is mainly money money money.. while also pumping out multiple side effects. You'd promote a better diet an alkaline diet All of which will help not only cancer coming in the first place but will help reduce if not remove all together!!! Start fighting the government more and You'd get respect far more from far more people.

I appreciate you work hard to help…

I appreciate you work hard to help cancer patients. If you read Karma Book for once, you should be able to understand that people who get this illness have very bad karma and therefore the illness is therefore to protect from the worse. If they have read the book they can actually cure their own cancer themselves. If child gets cancer, their parents should cure their karma first not by using medication but by becoming a human.

Rude volunteer! (Finchley)

The volunteer working in the Ballards Lane branch (Finchley) was unbelievably rude :( I donated some items on Monday and when I walked in she did not smile or greet me but sat there stony faced aggresively pointing towards the back office, to indicate where I should leave the items. I have never come across such awful, unprofessional behaviour. These are free items donated by the public, there should be some level of kindness and interest to customers who have taken the time to bring in items that may benefit someone else. I will not be donating to this shop again.

Donations unwelcome - THEY'RE FULL

So I tried to make a donation today at the East Ham store but I was turned away at the front door. Apparently they have too much and cannot take any more. If you're thinking of donating at any CR shop phone ahead, or better still try somewhere else. I was asked to phone a number, which turned out to be the store number, and the person I spoke with just reiterated the we-are-full message. You can jump through a lot of hoops to try and do the right thing but still not get anywhere! Appears donations are unwelcome.

2022/23 in review: Cancer Research UK reports good progress in a tough climate

The Cancer Research UK logo

24 August 2023

Researchers working in our Cambridge lab

Cancer Research UK is pleased with the progress it’s made this year, but remains concerned about the situation for cancer patients, after the publication of its Annual Reports and Accounts 2022/23 today.

The charity continues to take important steps towards achieving its vision of bringing about a world where everybody lives longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.

We started this financial year with optimism and ambition, ready to seize opportunities. We’ve made great progress in the face of significant challenges and none of this would’ve been possible without the generosity and commitment of our supporters, as well as the tireless work of our staff, volunteers, partners and cancer patients.

Following the launch of its new long-term strategy in March 2022, the charity has made important progress against its strategic priorities: discover, translate, engage, partner and sustain.

Driving research

Over the past year, the charity has made significant discoveries as a result of past funding.

This includes its flagship investment in lung cancer, TRACERx, uncovering how cancer cells protect themselves from the body’s immune system, as well as the role pollution plays in the development of lung cancer in people who have never smoked.

There have also been exciting findings from researchers in Cambridge about metastasis , the process by which cancer spreads, which could lead to new types of treatment to stop cancer from spreading and in turn keep many more patients alive longer.

Life-saving research is making a difference to patients right now and we’re finding new ways to understand, prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer. From our flagship lung cancer research project, TRACERx, making exciting discoveries, to supporting new Cancer Grand Challenges teams to take on some of the toughest challenges in cancer and launching our Smokefree campaign, we’ve taken important steps this year towards achieving our vision to bring about a world where everybody lives longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.

Progress for people affected by cancer

Small but important changes to treatments can have a big difference for patients.

Earlier this year, the charity announced that its FOxTROT trial, run by researchers in Birmingham and Leeds, has shown that people with bowel cancer have a lower chance of their cancer coming back if they begin chemotherapy before they have surgery to remove their tumour.

At least 5,000 people should benefit from the change every year in the UK, at no extra cost to the NHS. Worldwide, the researchers predict it could be used to treat hundreds of thousands more.

The charity is also laying the foundations for significant future progress and impact.

This includes agreeing new long-term funding for the Francis Crick Institute, which is home to scientists making discoveries that will transform the understanding of human health and disease, and the launch of Cancer Research Horizons in April 2022.

This new innovation engine unites all of the charity’s drug discovery, clinical development capabilities and commercialisation expertise under one umbrella, and it is hoped that this will take cutting-edge innovations from the lab bench to the bedside and bring new treatments to people with cancer faster.

Cancer Research UK also continues to deliver high quality and trusted cancer information to the public. This year, over 19 million people accessed the charity’s About Cancer website, an increase from 15.7m last year and its helpline nurses responded to over 13,000 people with questions about cancer.

The power of partnerships

To have the biggest possible impact, Cancer Research UK regularly partners with other organisations.

This year it worked together with organisations who share its commitment to beating cancer in children and young people including Little Princess Trust, Children with Cancer UK, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Blood Cancer UK.

Through these partnerships, Cancer Research UK wants to accelerate progress to ensure more children and young people can survive cancer with a good quality of life.

Flourishing through a year of uncertainty

Despite a year of economic uncertainty, Cancer Research UK has delivered a strong financial performance.

Thanks to the support of the public, volunteers, partners, staff and the research community, the charity has been able to fund world class research throughout the year to deepen its understanding of cancer and how best to prevent, treat and diagnose it, making a difference for people affected by cancer around the world.

Key figures from the Annual Report and Accounts include:

  • Cancer Research UK raised a total of £719m, £51m more than the previous year. This increase is due to the continued generosity of its supporters, a strong performance from shops, a rise in the value of legacies received, and income from the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK
  • The charity’s annual research activity spend was £415m compared with £388m in the previous year, an increase of 7%
  • Cancer Research UK is the largest charitable funder of cancer research in the world and remains on track to spend £1.5bn on research over a five-year period of 2021/22 to 2025/26
  • In 2022/23, 82p in every £1 donated was available to beat cancer

The road ahead

But despite this exciting progress, the charity warns that there are still concerns for those affected by cancer.

“The situation for people affected by cancer across the UK remains very worrying,” said Mitchell.

“Survival isn’t improving as quickly as we would like, and long waiting times for tests and treatments are leaving many people facing fear and uncertainty.

“Developing a long-term strategic approach for cancer, planning and investing in the cancer workforce and prioritising early diagnosis are essential to transform cancer survival in the UK from world lagging to world leading.

“We will continue to call on leaders across all four UK nations to make this a priority.”

Looking ahead with optimism

The past few years of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ongoing cost of living crisis, have been a difficult time for the charity, but they are looking ahead with optimism.

“We continue to face challenging and tough years ahead,” said Mitchell.

“The cost-of-living crisis is impacting cancer patients, our supporters and staff, and inflationary pressures affect our ability to raise money and erode the value of each pound we spend on research. I am pleased we’re still on track to spend £1.5bn on research over a five-year period.

“Cancer Research UK is at its best when we’re bold and ambitious so over the next year we’ll focus on seeking out new opportunities to grow our income and impact. We want to support as much world class life-saving research as possible.

“We’re looking to the future with continued optimism. Every day we see the impact of our vital work on people affected by cancer and their loved ones. Every day, we’re beating cancer together.”
