leisure time essay for students

Some people want to relax after their day of work. These people may prefer to relax by watching movies, reading or getting a massage. People who have a such as doctors, teachers and builders may choose these types of activities. If you are a doctor, you may feel that you want to let your body rest after work and you don’t want to do a five kilometer run after work, because you are already physically tired.

On the other hand, some people choose to be active in their leisure time because they do . For example, these people many spend all day sitting on a chair and their work. At the end of a working day, they a backache, and all of their body tired so they need to stretch their arms and improve their health by doing some activity such as going to the gym or swimming.

To sum up, the important thing is that people want to stay healthy by choosing what is best for them. In my view, the wrong way is to stay at home in your leisure time if you have a job.

Essay on Importance Of Leisure Time

In simple words, leisure is the free time of an individual life besides their busy schedule. Generally, the holidays with no piled-up tasks or the not occupied days are the leisure time. Leisure is the form of freedom from domestic chores, professional life or business activities, education, or health complications with a relieved mind and no pending tasks. The time of unpaid duties is also not reflected by leisure as you get occupied by some of the other household chores and even babysitting. Thus, leisure is the untouched time by any physical activity.

Pursuing this further, leisure is not a weekly time in one’s life. The schedule of the current generation has been so occupied that leisure is almost eliminated from their monthly routine. A lot of times, strugglers or established personalities go through severe emotional traumas as they lack self-time in their life. They become so occupied with their tasks and homely chores that they forget about their interest and neglect what they love, focusing on what others want them to get attached to. Thus, the prior importance of leisure time in one’s life is for self-realization. This allows one to think about what they are doing and decide whether they are going on the desired track or not. The frustrated or panicked mind often allows us to do a lot of things that are not planned or desired by ourselves. During this phase, leisure allows us to think about it and work on them well.

In addition to this, the exploration of one’s interest gets a priority during leisure. We often end the passion due to professionals’ economy playing a vital role. The suppressed interest can get into the limelight or the un-successful plans of traveling or exploring get evolved with leisure. The fresh entry back to the work or regular lifestyle is possible only with leisure time in life. After all, leaving the regular bag of office, institution, family, domestic works, and gadgets is important to realize how happy life can be in absence of them and in the presence of a real lovable individual or the environment where one always wanted to be. The allocation should not be made into a routine with hours set but there has to be freedom to be yourself apart from what the situation wants you to be or fit in the role.

In the final analysis, a healthy relationship, a balanced life, a proper reliable profession, and a happy family is possible only with an emotionally and physically stable individual. In this regard, leisure allows you to realize what has been missing in my life and what you need to achieve so far. Leisure is a time taken by an individual to explore themselves and make a to-do list or go through the already made one. Hence, leisure is a key for a happy life and a necessity for a busy schedule because humans cannot live a life of machines and emotional stability requires relieving actions.

How I Spend My Leisure Time Essay

I admit that I am a very busy person, but I still believe in finding time to unwind and do enjoyable things. I intentionally block off time for leisure in my calendar. I also make it a point to aside resources and plan meticulously to ensure I get maximum relaxation from it.

Leisure is important to mental and physical wellness and should be taken seriously. It is a conscious decision I make to ensure that I am able to experience it regularly. Taking time out renews my vigor to tackle the challenging tasks I come across daily, as I am able to take breaks to reflect on a few issues about life. I mostly plan my leisure time on the weekends so that I can make space for my family and friends.

This is a short description of how I spend my leisure breaks.

How I Make My Free Time Count

My favorite way to spend my leisure time would be to hang out with my friends at the beach. I enjoy the cool breeze from the ocean and watching people have fun on the shore. Walking along the shores of the beach calms my inner chaos. Occasionally, I collect seashells on the beach and bring them to my siblings. Most of these outdoor activities highly depend on how favorable the weather is.

I also make the effort to make calls to friends I am unable to physically visit and check in on. Sometimes, the walks alone can take up my whole afternoon.

Other times, I like listening to the music albums of my favorite artists as I stroll along the beach. When the weather is hot, I like swimming on the beach or joining my friends to go fishing in deeper waters. Recently, I tried scuba diving and I liked the experience. I hope that I get to try it again soon. The breathtaking view of the reef is amazing.

Sometimes, the weather confines me indoors, but that does not mean I cannot have a good leisure break.

If I am having my leisure getaway indoors, I like trying out new recipes and different cuisines from all over the world. Being busy in the kitchen trying out new dishes is enjoyable, to say the least. The meals don’t always turn out the way I expect them to, but the experience is always fun for me.

Alternatively, I like reading non-fiction books, particularly those that talk about historical events, while relaxing on the couch. I like doing this with soft jazz playing in the background as I peruse through the pages.

At times, I also go to the cinemas and theaters and catch up on the latest movies and plays with friends. There are times when I just want to stay at home and catch up on my go-to shows. I like playing dance games competitively with my brother especially when he is in town. Although he is a better dancer than I am, we both enjoy the dance and have fun together.

Giraffes Standing on Grass Field Surrounded by Plants

I also travel to Africa annually and go on safaris or hike in the mountains. The experience is always great – from socializing with people of different cultures to watching animal wildlife in their natural habitat. The days I spend in Africa leave indelible memories in my mind and encourage me to save up to return and experience more.

The activities I mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg. I really like making the most out of my leisure breaks. All these experiences and memories push me to invest in rest.

I don’t know how you make use of your spare time, but I hope that you are using it well. It could simply be a matter of engaging in your hobbies, spending time with loved ones, soaking in nature, or even reading books. As long as it makes you feel happy and recharged by the time the next week rolls in, it is worth doing.

Different people have different kinds of preferences when it comes to maximizing their free time. There are so many activities to choose from – so there’s no excuse not to indulge in getaways for yourself.

Essay About A Leisure Time Activity

What do you do when you have so much free time that you can actually take extended time off?

I have had the blessing of enjoying a lot of free moments lately and it has given me the opportunity to get involved in the many things that give me joy. One of them is reading novels. I am a staunch fan of murder mysteries. I can never get enough breathers to go through them during a busy week at school, so my collection has been gathering dust at home. I have recently been able to finish two books each weekend, and I’m really enjoying it.

Another activity that I love doing is to write down my plans for the future. I don’t just mean plans for the next year. I like envisioning myself five or ten years from where I am and dreaming of what I’ll be able to accomplish by then.

Finally, I like playing games and indulging in recreational activities. Board games are a guilty pleasure for me. I recently rediscovered my love for classic Monopoly and word puzzles and have been challenging my family and friends for intense rematches on weekends.

What Are Popular Ways To Spend Leisure Time?

There are plenty of ways to wind down in your spare moments. There are those who get involved in competitive sports. Others want something more relaxing and simply hang out with family. More adventurous people travel to other parts of the world to experience and soak in another culture. Others write down their ideas. There are a rare few who spend days in the library looking to expand their knowledge on a certain topic or subject of interest. Then there are the more fun, casual, and popular group activities, such as karaoke, cocktails, hotel stays, and pampering trips.

Why Is Leisure Time Important?

Making space to relax and the wind is essential in making sure you can still excel in the other areas of your life. People say that rest is actually a life strategy. You don’t necessarily rest because you are lazy and don’t want to deal with your obligations. You get to rest for the ultimate good of those activities. It almost seems counterproductive, for example, to do a catnap the night before a heavy deadline. But ten minutes of sleep can actually re-energize your brain and refuel your creative juices so that you can power through the night and finish that requirement. Getting those breathers for yourself also protects you from burnout, which is a common ailment in today’s busy world where everything demands your time and attention. It gives you fresh starts, especially when you feel uninspired and stuck.

English Summary

Essay on Leisure Time

What is this life if full of care, We have no time to stand and stare?

So sang the poet W.H. Davies. Leisure means the free time that we have after the day’s hard labour. It means the time for rest and recreation after our routine professional work is over.

Life is worthless if we have work cares and anxieties only and no time to stand and stare i.e. to look at the beautiful objects of Nature. Most of the work that we do is dull and tiresome. We need rest to recoup our lost energy and to give rest to our tired body and mind. So leisure is highly essential for a busy man.

After we have made proper use of leisure, we feel refreshed and attend to our work with renewed vigour and interest. Leisure brings in a change in our routine work and life. If there is no leisure and rest and recreation in a man’s life, he often becomes bored, irritable and quarrelsome.

Today we live in a machine age. We have to live and work like a machine otherwise we cannot make both ends meet in this competitive world. But the Indian workers have not got enough money to enjoy their leisure like their brethren in the western countries the U.S.A. England West Germany, etc.

Many of them spend their leisure in enforced idleness. The problem of leisure is closely connected with the problem of money. Surely you need money to spend your free time or leisure in reading an interesting book or going on a picnic or excursion, or paying for a seat in a cinema hall, or purchasing a ticket at a football match in a stadium, etc.

As a poor worker has no money to enjoy his leisure more often than not he is forced to sit at home and sleep on his holidays.

Leisure can be profitably used in adopting some hobby, such as gardening, mountaineering, boating, swimming, riding, collection of stamps and coins, photography, singing and dancing and playing upon a harmonium and so on. Taking part in games and sports is also a useful hobby.

In the West people also use their leisure for self-improvement. In short, one should spend one’s leisure in such pursuits as are both interesting and instructive and refresh your mind and strengthen our body. Most of the great men of the world spend their free time in useful hobbies.

The famous scientist Einstein spent his leisure in playing upon a sitar. The noted film star Ashok Kumar spends his leisure in studying horoscopes Pt. Nehru was fond of riding while Gandhiji, of morning walks and evening prayers. Free time can also be usefully spent in meditation.

But some people misuse leisure. They spend even their free time in earning money. Day in and day out they are after the material gains. As they work hard without any rest, they often suffer from a nervous breakdown, blood pressure and many other ailments. They have no time to look after their body, mind and soul. In their search for material prosperity, they lose their peace of mind.

Then there are people who spend their leisure in evil practices. They indulge in drinking and gambling, litigation and anti-social activities. Some idle away their leisure.

An empty mind becomes a devil’s workshop in their case. “I have seen men come into a fortune.” says G.B. Shaw, “and lost the happiness, their health and finally their lives because of excessive smoking drinking and indulging in wasteful habits.”

So you must have money to enjoy your leisure, but the money must be well spent. It is not at all easy to know what to do with leisure unless we Have been brought up to it.

On the whole, we shall have to admit that leisure is of utmost importance in our life. Time spent on leisure is generally well spent. It is the time for rest, recreation and cool thinking.

It makes your tired mind and body fresh and active. We can enjoy the beauties of Nature, art and life in our free time only. Hence life without leisure is a.life without pleasure. The world has not yet realised the importance and value of leisure.

Leisure Time Essay

Leisure is one of the most popular human activities. Numerous proverbs and sayings depict the importance of this kind of time-spending. When we were still children, we all learned an old proverb “All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy”. A bit childish it is, but this saying perfectly describes the most important feature of the leisure.

In its most general meaning, leisure is discretionary time spent in non-compulsory activities. Either active or passive, this time is recreational, and this is probably one of the most important functions of leisure.

Thomas Hobbes called is “the Mother of Philosophy”, and Samuel Johnson expanded this idea, saying “All intellectual improvement arises from leisure”. Basically, leisure provides us with an opportunity to grow and develop in numerous ways we are interested in. Some people enjoy going in for sports, others – travel, some other people prefer reading or spending time with their family, friends or even new people.

Whatever activity one chooses for leisure time (or even if one decides to stay home and do nothing – doing nothing is also recreational sometimes), it is important that leisure brings joy and helps to achieve harmony with the inner “I”. It brings the feeling of achievement, self-actualization, development that brings moral satisfaction and thus helps us to love ourselves.

Another important quality one could get out of leisure is the ability to concentrate on things other than work or everyday duties. It develops imagination, creativity, strength, will-power and provides extra energy. It is well known that a change of activities is very useful – if one has intense work schedule, it is advisable to have lazy leisure time and if one has sedentary life-style – active recreation is suggested.

Of course, one should not prioritize leisure to work. Aristotle once said: “We give up leisure in order that we may have leisure, just as we go to war in order that we may have peace”. Only the balance of these two components provides good results and satisfaction from both. ‘Leisure…means some subjectively gratifying activity’ (Andorka, 1987, p. 151); people who have ‘too much free time’ may not find it subjectively gratifying (Gershuny 2000, pp. 202–211).

Nowadays, more and more people suffer from workaholism or have health and psychological problems due to overwork. The highly competitive work environment presses for hard work and continuous stress. In this case, it is batter certainly to prioritize leisure to avoid “becoming a dull Jack”.

I think that although the preferences of how to spend leisure time are very personal and depend on the type of personality of any single individual, public programs that use leisure as social good would be useful. Especially, if the organisers would be able to motivate people to participate for their own good, for the food of the whole community or even just for fun. In practice, people may find inspiration and motivation to work for the social good just of charity or respect, or any other non-monetary easily-achievable reward.

Personally would appreciate being a part of a team that would improve any sphere of social life. As I enjoy painting, I would be glad to participate in some social improvement of the playground or the neighbourhood. I would also care for any creative and socially valuable leisure activity, any sport or travel that would be useful not only for me but for those people around me.

I think it is very important to realise the role of nature and environment in recreation. Most people recreate fully only when they have full contact with nature, that is why I believe that the recreation field will continue to attract humans in terms of natural recreation. I think that “health tours” and “wild nature tours” will be of great importance and value in future, especially with the emergence of numerous threats to the environmental system. Nature provides humans with strong and clear energy that has great energetic potential. That is why most people like the sun, the sea and the forest so much – it is an infinite energy source. Of course, pools and spas are a good alternative to nature, and they are also very recreational, only real wild nature experience enables us to forget about our daily errands and burdens and to fully renew and gather strengths.

Leisure is a matter of personal choice and everyone has their own way of achieving moral satisfaction from one’s leisure time. It is important to value this time and never to fail to use it to the full. Only in this case leisure would be truly recreational and rewarding and work would seem more pleasant as well.

Band 9 sample essay about leisure activities

Home  »  IELTS BAND 9 ESSAYS  »  Band 9 sample essay about leisure activities

Some people believe that children’s leisure activities must be educational, otherwise they are a complete waste of time. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your experience.

To derive a double benefit from anything is considered a bonus, and this is especially the case when discussing leisure activities for children. The idea to fuse both education and entertainment into one activity is a goal of many educators; some would even believe that failure to do this makes the activity pointless. Drawing from examples in Sweden and reviewing games, such as Pokemon, I firmly believe that all activities should have an educational value.

Leisure activities are a perfect time to take advantage of the receptiveness in a child’s mind, and some countries are adamant about this. Take Sweden, for example. For many years they have legally stipulated that all children’s toys sold in the country should have some educational value. In addition, for such a rule to be passed it must be upheld by scientific research. Therefore, the advantage of incorporating an education element into toys is scientifically proven.

On the other hand, across the UK, children were wasting their time collecting and learning the statistics of each creature on each Pokemon card. If, however, these cards had been intertwined with more educational data the child could have simultaneously gained a more practical education. Due to the child learning large swathes of irrelevant and useless information it can be argued that the time would have been better spent with real facts and figures on the cards.

To conclude, scientific evidence from Sweden and fantasy games such as Pokemon with little educational value are two clear reasons why children’s leisure activities should have an element of learning involved.

Leisure Time Essay- For all students

Leisure Time Essay

Leisure Essay-1

Leisure Time Essay – Introduction: Leisure is that sweetest of moments when a man has nothing specific to do. When he is his own master and can dispose of his spare time at his own suit will .

Meaning of leisure: Leisure does not refer to idleness or laziness but it refers to relief or relaxes for a short period from the monotony of daily routine. It is not a non-activity but it implies an activity which is meaningful, potential and enjoyable: It is for its own sake as it is a period of personal fulfillment and pleasure. It is, so to speak, freedom of monotony, boredom, and drudgery of life.

The present time is a time of automation, better standard of living and longevity has further broadened and liberalized the real conception of leisure. The strange and wonderful invention of science and technology has also reduced the hour of working and consequently man has now found a lot of time to enjoy leisure at his suit will. In fact, very few people are aware of making the proper utilization of leisure.

Different people spend it in different ways, They have no proper sense or idea of it due to their ignorance, whim or uncared habit. To many others, leisure is a time to make creative and aesthetic pursuit and inner fulfillment.

Don’t Forget to Check: Essay in English

Today’s leisure: Today’s leisure is spent in various ways People are rightly found in spending their leisures, watching T.V. The craze and popularity of TV is increasing day by day. A great part of their time is spent not in manly thing but in viewing programs in the idle box.

Such a craze and popularity of T.V. has created many socials, psychological, physical, family, individual and mental problems. That’s why, leisure spent watching TV, enjoying cinema shows, and other lengthy interesting things may marginalize towards reading, social activities, and outdoor habits/hobbies to a great extent.

Source of enjoyment: Most men, therefore, find a life strenuous business. This is the tragedy of life, work and worry— both are equally unavoidable yet both are equally tiresome. The continuity of this chain has to be broken now and then to enable man to recover his freshness, to take mind off on a holiday. Leisure breaks upon the monotony of existence with a touch of variety.

Man’s life is usually bound by routine; leisure affords an opportunity to escape out of the compulsions of routine and breathe the fresh air of freedom. This is, therefore, always a source of joy whenever it comes. Life on earth is not an easy affair these days. The mere task of keeping the body and soul together strains resources to the utmost limit.

To live well one has to be incessantly toiling, just to earn the extra bit of money. Hence the problem of having a workfree period is difficult to solve. The best way to do it is to have a socialistic society where work is a rationed in term of social needs.

The enjoyable leisure: Truly speaking, leisure is enjoyable in relation to one’s work. After a day’s hard and toilsome work, one needs to enjoy leisure the most. In absence of work, no leisure can truly be conceived. Leisure is a kind of diversion which pre-supposes work and labor. Rest is much sweeter than honey and money after exertion and exhaustion.

Totem Our life: Our life is now more free and leisurely than our forefathers. Now people have found out to spend their leisure time. There are interesting serials, spicy films scientific music, dances, shows, plays various types of information weather forecasts, different types of interviews, analysis of events, happenings and Incidents and many other things at twenty-four hours of the day. There are many sources of channels to choose from.

Necessity: Man is under the necessity of leisure. After a tiresome work a period of leisure makes a man fresh, energetic, and stimulates him to finish the unfinished work. One can spend leisure i n taking snacks at a restaurant, tea, cofee and other edible things At leisure one can engage oneself in meditation and religious practice. The great men all over the world in the past and even at present spent and now spend their respective leisures in meditation in pursuit of knowledge, constructive ideas, benevolence for the well-being of mankind. Leisure in man’s life is as essential as food but its proper utilization in the fruitful way is wanted. The happiest man is, of course, he whose work is leisure, who finds a perpetual joy in the work he has to perform. To such a man work is never a soul killing drudgery.

Conclusion: Man cannot continue to work for all day long, He needs rest, race and leisure, for regaining energy, stimulation, and concentration for the next works.

Leisure Activities: The Positive Effects Essay

Introduction.

The core purpose of this essay is to present an analysis of the interview results gathered from two participants on leisure. The two people interviewed were Sam, a 27-year-old female of Filipino Asian-American origin, and Johnson, a male aged 28 years Asian-American but Vietnamese. Sam is a full-time worker who spends 3 hours per day on leisure activities such as video games. On the other hand, Johnson is a part-time server and a student who spends 4-5 hours per day on leisure activities, such as playing video games with friends and watching TV shows.

Overall, the findings from the research participants suggest that leisure is a form of self-care and relaxation integral to mental well-being. Sam and Johnson both dedicate at least 3-5 hours per week to leisure activities and feel that Americans generally have less time for leisure due to their strong work ethic. Sam stated, “America has an intrinsically cultural bias towards a heavy work ethic which distracts them from leisure with close ones.” Neither of them felt that their age, gender identity/expression, or race/ethnic identity affected their leisure or access to it.

Covid-19 has affected leisure in some way by increasing leisure time or making it more accessible. Johnson noted, “It increased it, to be honest,” when asked how Covid-19 has affected his leisure. Sam and Johnson both expressed that they could explore other avenues or other hobbies if they had more time, and Sam added, “Everyone would feel the same way if they had full-time jobs.” This shows that people have the will to indulge in more leisure activities but lack time to do so due to their demanding jobs.

The participants also reported that their age, gender identity/expression, or race/ethnic identity does not affect their leisure or access. This indicates that leisure activities are accessible to everyone, regardless of their identity. Sam said, “Acts of leisure are fairly accessible to people like me.” Furthermore, both participants reported that they do not have trouble differentiating work from leisure. Johnson explained, “Being a server at such a busy place in the bay area makes it impossible to mix these things.” These people are aware of the distinction between work and fun time and understand the latter’s importance, although they may not do it as often as required.

Moreover, both interviewees reported understanding the need for leisure and taking time to perform such activities. Sam said, “Sometimes feeling stress from work → not enough time to relax.” This indicates that leisure is important to her to manage stress. Similarly, Johnson said, “My leisure activities are usually more relaxing and stress-free.” Both participants feel that there is not enough time for leisure in America due to the strong work ethic and the lack of value placed on leisure. Sam noted, “America = strong work ethic, not enough time. Doesn’t value leisure like other countries.” This indicates that America does not provide a proper environment for its citizens to have spare time to do self-care activities. Sam acknowledged that work was the primary obstacle for her, while Johnson shared that stress from work, debt, and school was the primary hindrances for him.

One of the core items from the interviews is that leisure is an important part of self-care and relaxation. This finding is supported by Russell, (2017, p. 50), indicating that leisure activities can help reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being. For instance, engaging in leisure activities for at least one hour per week was associated with lower levels of perceived stress (Rech et al., 2018, p. 305). Similarly, a study found that engaging in leisure activities was associated with increased positive affect, which indicates a positive mood (Russell, 2017, p. 67). The findings from the interviews support these research findings, as both participants reported that leisure is an important part of self-care and relaxation.

Another item gathered from the participants is that work, debt, and school are major constraints that prevent people from having leisure. According to Russell, (2017, p. 21), leisure is often compromised due to competing commitments and demands. Work, family obligations, and other responsibilities can interfere with leisure activities. Work can be a major source of stress and can often interfere with leisure activities. Bakker & de Vries (2020, p. 18) found that work can lead to stress and anxiety, which can interfere with leisure activities and prevent people from engaging in them. Additionally, long working hours can lead to decreased leisure time and increased stress levels, which can harm mental health.

Moreover, people with higher levels of education and more demanding occupations were more likely to suffer from time poverty, defined as having limited time for leisure activities. (Bakker & de Vries (2020, p. 12) found that people with economic constraints, such as debt and financial insecurity, were more likely to experience time poverty. People with higher levels of stress and anxiety were more likely to experience time poverty, as they often prioritized their work and other commitments over leisure. Geographical barriers can prevent people from engaging in leisure activities, as some activities may not be available in certain areas. Other barriers, such as physical disabilities, mental health issues, and lack of transportation, can also prevent people from accessing leisure time (Rech et al., 2018, p. 307). Some people may struggle to find activities that are enjoyable or that provide stimulation. Financial constraints can also prevent people from engaging in certain leisure activities, such as travel or attending events.

Additionally, the participants reported how Covid-19 influenced their leisure time access in different ways. The pandemic has increased leisure activities, such as digital gaming, listening to music, and watching movies (Gallè et al., 2022, para. 4). For example, studies have found that people have increased their digital gaming and listening to music during the pandemic. People have also increased their watching of movies and television shows during the pandemic. Furthermore, research has also found that people have increased their engagement in virtual activities, such as virtual meet-ups and online classes (Gallè et al., 2022, para. 6). All these activities allow people to engage in leisure activities while still adhering to social distancing guidelines.

However, in many areas, social distancing and other safety measures have meant that many traditional leisure activities, such as going to the movies, visiting friends, or going to the gym, are not possible. Travel restrictions have meant that many people have been unable to participate in recreational activities requiring travel, such as vacationing or visiting family (Mutz & Reimers, 2021, 385). This has led to decreased leisure activities and increased sedentary behaviors, such as watching television or spending time on the internet.

The interviewees also provided their viewpoints on the difference between work and leisure. They understand the distinction between them and do their best to set aside time for each category. Research has found that it is important to establish a boundary between work and leisure to ensure that leisure activities can be enjoyed without interference from work. For example, (Rech et al., 2018, p. 306) established that individuals need to be mindful of the amount of time they dedicate to work to ensure that they dedicate enough time to leisure activities. Furthermore, individuals need to set aside specific times for leisure activities to ensure that work obligations do not disrupt their leisure activities. People must be mindful of their work-related stress to ensure they do not let their work obligations interfere with their leisure activities.

Leisure activities can provide individuals with much-needed respite from the stresses of life. Bláfoss et al. (2018, p. 385) determined that engaging in leisure activities can help to improve mental health and well-being by reducing stress and anxiety levels, improving mood, and fostering a sense of connection and community. Furthermore, the participants reported leisure activities were more fulfilling when done in place of less satisfying work. Additionally, leisure activities can help individuals to distract themselves from less satisfying work or other life challenges, providing them with a sense of purpose and satisfaction. Leisure activities can help to foster a sense of connection and community, providing individuals with a sense of belonging and support (Bláfoss et al., 2018, p. 389). Therefore, it is important for individuals to prioritize leisure activities to ensure that they can take the time to relax, unwind, and enjoy life.

Leisure activities are an important part of self-care and relaxation, which add to the positive meaning of life. This is supported by research that found that leisure activities can positively affect mental health and well-being. Covid-19 has had an impact on leisure activities by both increasing the number of leisure activities available and by making it more difficult to access traditional leisure activities. However, people have had time to participate in more indoor fun activities. Overall, leisure activities are an important part of self-care and relaxation, and individuals need to prioritize leisure activities to ensure that they can take the time to relax and enjoy life.

Leisure time is actually meaning our free times. As a student or a job holder, everyone spends a busy time in their life. But everyone gets a break from study or work. We address that time as ‘Leisure Time’. So this is important for our regular life to spend some free time. We can spend leisure time doing lots of good things.

I suggest reading books. Because I believe book reading is one of the best habits for humans. It improves our knowledge and personality. You can spend time doing the thing that you like most. Your hobbies could be a good option for you.

Leisure time.

Work and leisure are interrelated. They are like the two sides of the same coin. The observation that “we must beat the iron when it is hot, but we may polish it at leisure”, best explains the proper relation between work and leisure. Leisure is like a margin on a printed or written page. In the absence of work, no leisure can be actually conceived. Leisure never means idleness. Leisure cannot be thought of as a non-activity. It should be seen in a broader perspective, as a fulfilling part of life and work. As J.B. Priestley has said, “Any fool can be fussy and rid himself of energy all over the place, but a man has to have something in him before he can settle down to do nothing. He must have reserves to draw upon, must be able to plunge into the strange, slow river of dreams and reverie, must be at heart a poet.” Only a very few have these reserves to draw upon. Moreover, dreaming, thinking and even meditation are activities, though of different kind. One works hard only to have some leisure because “man does not live by bread alone.” So leisure may be called the spare time, free from labour and drudgery of life. It is a kind of diversion. The dictionary definition of leisure is, “the state of having time at one’s disposal; time which one can spend as one pleases; free or unoccupied time”. A famous French scholar and sociologist has defined leisure as “an activity apart from the obligations of work, family and society, to which the individual turns at will, for either relaxation, diversion or broadening of knowledge and his spontaneous social participation, the free expression of his creative capacity.” Leisure is a kind of breathing space or a welcome and desirable pause in the long hours of work and labour. A labour is sweet and honourable when it is earned with the sweat of the brow.

The rapid and radical scientific and technological advancements have made life easy and convenient. Our life is now far more free and leisurely than it was for our forefathers. Affluence and ease have brought more leisure hours. We are relieved of much of drudgery now and have more spare hours to relieve us of fatigue. The housewife too, now has more free time as there are many labour-saving devices at her disposal. Consequently, all of us can now enjoy long hours of rest, relaxation, joy, diversion and entertainment. All work and no play would certainly make Jack a dull boy. Leisure is a kind of insurance against dullness, fatigue, boredom, tension and cares of life. After hours of work and struggle, we need some rest, relaxation, joy, respite, freshness and a kind of brief holiday. Leisure helps us in keeping our body and mind toned up, healthy and refreshed. Some time devoted to regular diversions, or hobbies, is bound to strengthen and refresh us in more than one way for better achievements in our respective fields of life. The five-day a week work culture gives us a lot of spare time to spend in recreation, rest, hobbies, simple and innocent joys of life and intellectual and artistic activities.

But for many, leisure may be a problem as they may not know how to use and enjoy their spare time. For them leisure may be more boring and monotonous than the daily routine occupation. Leisure is like a double-edged sword which can be either used well or misused. A person can be best judged by the way he or she uses the leisure hours. It never means frittering away the precious time in drinking, gambling or idle gossiping. It should be viewed as a golden opportunity and used for healthy enjoyment, intellectual, spiritual, cultural and artistic pursuits. One may spend this time in playing with children, listening to their stories or in observing nature and birds.

An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. The right use of leisure hours can help us in shaping and developing our personality in the desired way. It is really condemnable to spend leisure without a definite plan to have purposeful gains. Leisure provides us a rare opportunity to satisfy our inner demands. By means of our regular occupations and professions, we satisfy our physical and material demands. Now, during leisure we can very well satisfy our artistic, cultural, aesthetic, intellectual and spiritual urges. We can devote our spare hours to reading, writing, playing a musical instrument or in the pursuit of some meaningful creative and socially relevant activity. There are many hobbies to choose from. We may select from these according to our aptitude and resources, etc. Once we have made a judicious selection, we can make our leisure really interesting, meaningful and worthwhile. All cultural and aesthetical achievements and improvements arise from leisure. It helps people in becoming whole, integrated and cultured. During these precious moments of respite, relaxation, rest and diversion, one can stand and stare at things beautiful, ponder on the meaning of life and turn one’s life into a real asset.

Different people spend leisure differently. Some may occupy themselves in gardening, photography, reading or playing outdoor or indoor games. Others may busy themselves in playing with children or in enjoying music.

In modern times, viewing television is becoming more and more popular. In western countries people spend roughly 45% of their leisure hours in front of their T.V. sets. In India also more and more people spend their time before their T.V. sets, viewing films, popular serials or other programmes. Women and children too are enthusiastic viewers of television programmes in India. But watching T.V. for long hours has its inherent risks as it is a passive entertainment and there is no participation by the viewers in it.

Short work weeks and automation of activities have resulted in more leisure and spare time. And with this, the danger of mental dissipation, flirtation and killing of time in idle entertainment have increased. Success and purposefulness of leisure is as important as that of our employment or vocational pursuits. Leisure can be a means of both our elevation, enrichment, improvement of sensibilities and degradation, fall, moral dissipation and flirtation. Leisure in itself is neither good nor bad. It is its use that makes it good or bad. No doubt all intellectual improvement arises from leisure but too much and too frequent leisure makes a poet cry:

Leisure is pain; takes off our chariot wheels,

How heavily we drag the load of life

Blest leisure is our curse; like that of Cain,

It makes us wander, wander earth around

To fly that tyrant thought.

Therefore, leisure with purpose and meaningfulness should be our aim for has not Cicero, the famous Roman statesman said, “The thing which is the most outstanding and chiefly to be desired by all healthy and good and well-off persons is leisure with honour.” If we stick to the principle of “leisure with honour” then it would be no problem at all. We must be alert and watchful against the abuse of leisure.

Planning to Combine Business and Leisure Travel? You’re Not Alone.

As employees increasingly add leisure time to their business trips, companies are trying to figure out where their duty of care obligations begin and end.

On a Sunday in late January, Melinda Buchmann, who lives in Florida and supervises client relations for RevShoppe, a 30-person remote company advising organizations on sales techniques and strategies, arrived in Banff, Alberta, to help set up a four-day company meeting.

The last day of the event, her husband, Josh, a director of strategic partnerships for the delivery company DoorDash , who also works remotely, joined her. They spent two leisurely days hiking in Banff National Park and visiting Lake Louise.

“I take advantage, because I don’t know when I’m going to return,” Ms. Buchmann said of the decision to combine downtime with a business trip.

As postpandemic work life has changed, and arrangements now include full-time office attendance as well as hybrid and remote work, so, too, has business travel. The phenomenon known as bleisure, or blended business and leisure travel, was initially embraced largely by digital nomads . But such combined travel is now also popular with people outside that group . Allied Market Research, a subsidiary of Allied Analytics, based in Portland, Ore., estimated that the bleisure travel market was $315.3 billion in 2022 and would reach $731.4 billion by 2032.

As employees increasingly add leisure time to their business trips, companies are struggling to determine where their legal obligation to protect employees from harm — their so-called duty of care — begins and ends. And workers may think that because their trip started with business, they will get all the help they need if something goes wrong on the leisure end. Instead, they should generally consider the leisure part of a trip as a regular vacation where they cover all expenses and contingencies.

Companies are responsible for knowing where their employees are during a business trip, covering expenses if an accident or emergency occurs, securing new lodging if a hotel is damaged, even swapping out a broken down rental car. Still, it’s not entirely clear if that coverage ends completely after the conference or the last client meeting.

Companies recognize that threats are increasing, said Robert Cole, senior research analyst focusing on lodging and leisure travel at Phocuswright, a market research company. They are trying to figure out how to take care of a valuable company resource, the employee, without leaving themselves open to financial risk or potential litigation.

“Crafting a comprehensive policy that balances business objectives, employee well-being and legal considerations can be challenging,” Nikolaos Gkolfinopoulos, head of tourism at ICF, a consulting and technology services company in Reston, Va., wrote in an email.

Employees may be on their own without realizing it and may be surprised by out-of-pocket expenses if they require hospital care abroad or evacuation, said Suzanne Morrow, chief executive of InsureMyTrip , an online insurance travel comparison site in Warwick, R.I.

Ms. Morrow said medical coverage provided by a company “is generally only for the dates of the actual business trip abroad.” If travelers are extending the trip for personal travel, she added, “they would want to secure emergency medical coverage for that additional time abroad.”

Employers and employees are left to figure out when the business portion of the trip ends and the leisure segment begins, a significant detail if an employee has a medical emergency. “Where does the corporation liability end?” said Kathy Bedell, senior vice president at BCD Travel, a travel management company.

Companies have varying policies to deal with the new travel amalgam. The chief executive of RevShoppe, Patricia McLaren, based in Austin, Texas, said the company provided flexible travel options and allowed employees to work anywhere they choose.

Even so, there are constraints. The company requires all employees, including executives, to sign liability and insurance waivers when they are on a voluntary company-sponsored trip, such as an off-site meeting. Such waivers typically place responsibility on employees for their own well-being. And if they bring someone, they are responsible for that person’s expenses.

Employees are responsible for requesting the paid time off and notifying their managers of their whereabouts, although that part is not a requirement. Managers have to ensure adequate staffing, Ms. McLaren said.

Elsewhere, employees may not bother to mention the leisure portion of their trip. Eliot Lees, a vice president and managing director at ICF, said he had been on trips as a child with his parents when they combined business and leisure. His parents were academics, who would piggyback vacations onto conferences.

Now he does the same. “I don’t think I ever asked for approval,” he said. (ICF has no formal business-leisure travel policy. It’s allowed as part of personal time off.) After a conference in the Netherlands last year, he spent four days hiking in the northern part of the country.

“I go anywhere, and take more risks than I should,” he said. He said he didn’t carry personal travel or accident insurance.

Any nonchalance may quickly evaporate if a threat emerges. Security experts say even low-risk locations can become high-risk for a few days or weeks of the year.

“Companies are concerned about losing visibility into a traveler’s whereabouts if they booked flights and hotels outside their corporate travel management company,” Benjamin Thorne, senior intelligence manager in London for Crisis24, a subsidiary of GardaWorld, wrote in an email. “The company may think the traveler is in one city when, in reality, they could have booked a holiday package to another nearby city. This lack of visibility by the company makes it difficult to support travelers when a disaster occurs.”

He also raised the possibility that “a traveler with bleisure travel reservations and expectations may find their work trip canceled due to changes in the risk environment or company policy, disrupting their leisure plans.”

Will a company step in off hours if there’s a problem? “That depends on how you are booked,” Mr. Cole, the senior research analyst at Phocuswright, said. A rule of thumb is the further you get from corporate control, the greater the gray area gets.

Half of GoldSpring Consulting’s clients take the responsibility for the entire trip, said Will Tate, a partner at the consultancy based in Cross Roads, Texas, and a certified public accountant. They don’t want the reputational risk. The other half say: “The business trip ended Friday. That’s when we end our duty of care.”

Some companies are trying to define and narrow the gray area. “If you are clearly on personal time, there is no legal requirement for your employer to provide for you,” said Nicole Page, a lawyer whose practice includes employment law at Reavis Page Jump in New York.

Uber provides employees with advisories before a trip, travel assessments, safety tips while traveling and emergency travel assistance, including medical aid, airport travel support, urgent and emergency assistance, and lost or stolen personal property insurance whether they are on business or pleasure travel or a combination.

And at DoorDash, Chris Cherry, head of global safety and security, wrote in an email that “while personal travel is not something we track, we have received requests to extend our travel support capabilities to personal travel.” Mr. Cherry said in those cases, the company has manually added employee leisure itineraries to its travel risk management system and “provided the same level of overwatch that we do for regular business travel.”

The Buchmanns plan to travel this month to Barcelona, Spain, for the McDonald’s Worldwide Convention. DoorDash will have a booth, and Mr. Buchmann will work on the exhibit floor and also entertain clients.

Ms. Buchmann will accompany him. She plans to go sightseeing in the morning, and work in the afternoons and evenings Barcelona time. She will also take three days of paid time off and has shared her plans with Ms. McLaren, the RevShoppe chief executive.

They will stay a day after the conference and plan to visit the Dalí Theater and Museum in Figueres. “I’m sure there will be no shortage of tapas and window shopping along way,” Mr. Buchmann said. He expects to be back at work the next Monday.
