What is a nursing school application cover letter.

A nursing school application cover letter works almost the same as a cover letter for any job application. For prospective nursing school students, a cover letter is the introduction to your application package, and a way of introducing yourself on paper to the admissions committee of a school. It is similar to a nursing school letter of intent or nursing school personal statement , but there are some key differences.

Firstly, a cover letter is typically shorter and more formal than a personal statement. It also tends to focus on your professional work experience, volunteer experience and skillset. A nursing school cover letter is designed to demonstrate why you are a good fit for a nursing program and how you will be an excellent future medical professional. A letter of intent or personal statement usually examines your personal motivations, experiences and reasons for wanting to become a nurse. It’s your way of answering the question ‘ why do you want to be a nurse ?’.

A nursing school application cover letter is a formal letter, typically no more than one page long. Or about 200-400 words maximum. Since the word count is low, you’ll need to be fairly concise and get to your point. You’ll also need to limit yourself to only a few points and keep things relevant. Like other formal letters, such as letters of intent, they include several important sections, which we’ve outlined below.

Your cover letter is relatively short, so avoid using too many details or launching into extensive personal anecdotes or stories. Avoid getting lost in the weeds or using irrelevant examples. Be sure to show why your chosen examples are relevant to the nursing school’s values or the nursing profession. It’s also important not to repeat too much information from your resume or other parts of your application. Elaborate and expand, but don’t just rehash old information.

Writing a cover letter can feel overwhelming for many nurses, especially because it’s difficult to know what to say, how much to reiterate what’s on your resume , and what information to include or not. A cover letter is an opportunity to explain aspects of your professional or personal history that a resume can’t always get across. Your passion and interests come through, along with your ability to communicate clearly. Review the following steps to write a stand-out cover letter. Create a Header with Your Contact Information

Introduce yourself and note the position you’re applying for in the opening paragraph, highlight your skills and the reasons you want to work for this employer, write a closing paragraph and restate your interest, 7 mistakes to avoid in your nursing cover letter.

• Submitting Spelling and Grammar Errors: Nursing requires excellent documentation and attention to detail. Grammatical errors are unprofessional, and they can paint a picture of someone who doesn’t value attention to detail. Many resume reviewers will likely pass on a candidate whose resume and/or cover letter contain errors.
• Copying Your Resume: Your nursing cover letter can highlight aspects of your resume , but it shouldn’t be a verbatim copy. Find creative ways to underscore your key characteristics, skills, or experiences without repetition.
• Using Incorrect or Inconsistent Format: It’s best practice for your cover letter and resume to match in terms of design, font, and format. This creates a branded, visually cohesive application package.
• Forgetting to Tie Your Qualifications to the Position: Your cover letter should be targeted and specific, addressing the position you’re applying for and its qualifications, skills, and responsibilities. If you don’t tie your qualifications to the job in question, that makes a weak case for you getting an interview.
• Failing to Address the Letter to a Specific Person or Department: Many postings fail to provide the name of an individual or a department to address in your letter. If they provide this information, use it. If they don’t, you can use the generic “Hiring Manager” or “Hiring Committee”.
• Starting Every Paragraph with “I”: Be creative in finding different ways to begin each paragraph (see our sample letter for examples). If two paragraphs begin with “I”, that’s OK, but no more than that.

A nurse cover letter should include a header with your name, credentials, and contact information, plus the receiver’s contact information. The body of the letter should specifically address the position you’re applying for, and how you can fulfill the characteristics, credentials, skills, knowledge, and expertise required.

What should a nurse cover letter not include?

Your cover letter does not need to include phrases like, “My references are available upon request”; “Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns”; or “I can be contacted via email at _____________or via phone at _____________.” These are all givens, and if your contact information is in your header, there’s no need to say it again.

What’s the difference between a new grad nurse cover letter and an experienced nurse cover letter?

A new grad nurse cover letter can’t demonstrate the level of skill, expertise, and knowledge as a seasoned nurse. New grads haven’t accumulated years of nursing experience, but they have their academic and clinical performance, enthusiasm, passion, and related healthcare experience to share, whether paid or volunteer. When employers advertise new grad positions, they understand that new grad resumes and letters can’t reflect the resumes of experienced nurses.

Are nursing cover letters necessary?

In these days of online applications, a cover letter may be optional, meaning that applicants can upload a cover letter if they choose to. For some applications, a cover letter will be required. Consider this: if a cover letter is optional, why not go the extra mile and write a strong one? If your resume and experience are comparable to another candidate’s, your cover letter could give you the edge. After all, a resume can’t by nature express much personality, but a cover letter can. So, make a strong impression with a well-crafted letter, whether it’s required or not.

Paragraph 1: Begin by stating the position for which you are applying. Say something about the organization to demonstrate that you’ve done your homework and understand what they’re all about, and that this letter is not at all “cookie-cutter” in nature.

That says you need to show that you are equally committed to nurturing the health of the young generation and building a healthy society.

This will be aligning your goals with theirs for the need to care for the children and show compassion and build a positive image of the school.

Your RN or LPN or nursing graduation will play an important role depending on what they are looking for - find it in their job description.

With this information, your cover letter is one step away from the interview call.

That final deciding factor will be your experience at a school or at a pediatric hospital.

If you do not have the experience, sharing your compassion towards their “care for children” motto will do the work for you.

Be concise and write your school nurse cover letter in 150-200 words. Finally, let’s look at the examples for both experienced and inexperienced school nurse cover letters.

Example Cover Letter for Experienced School Nurse

Dear Ms.Tracy,

I came to know of the full-time School Nurse vacancy at Afsa Highschool through the Star Tribune newspaper and was inclined to apply for this position. I currently work at the Minnesota District School where I’m assigned to 5 district schools to assess and educate children on keeping a healthy diet, understanding their bodies, and identifying any health problems. My RN certification and 3-year experience with children would be beneficial to the position of School Nurse at your school.

The deputy prime minister has criticised the "appalling speculation" about the Princess of Wales's health in the weeks leading up to her announcement that she's receiving treatment for cancer. It came after he warned of the threats posed by Chinese-backed cyber campaigns targeting the UK.

Back in the Commons, where the disinformation around the whereabouts of the Princess of Wales has been raised.

Kate confirmed last week she is receiving treatment for cancer after her unrelated abdominal surgery in January, following weeks of unfounded rumours about her spread on social media.

Responding, Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden says: "The appalling speculation that we have seen over the past few weeks comes as a reminder to us all that it is important that we deal with valid and trusted information".

He adds Britons should be "appropriately sceptical" about a number of online sources.

Mr Dowden was speaking after a statement about the threat of Chinese-backed cyber campaigns targeting the UK (see previous posts or key points).

A "go-slow" convoy of tractors is making it nigh-on impossible to drive around Westminster this evening.

Campaign groups Save British Farming and Fairness for Farmers of Kent have organised a protest against "substandard imports and dishonest labelling" they warn are threatening food security.

Dozens of tractors and other farm vehicles are taking part, with farmers having been left outraged by post-Brexit trade deals with countries like Australia and New Zealand that they say are allowing lower standard food products into the UK - undercutting domestic producers.

European farmers are having a much better time of it, they say.

Wiltshire beef and arable farmer and Save British Farming founder Liz Webster said the government had "betrayed" the industry.

We've heard a few times today about the "golden era" in UK-China relations overseen by David Cameron when he was prime minister, and how quickly things have changed since then.

Our chief political correspondent Jon Craig thinks his pro-Beijing stance from when he was in Number 10 could come back to bite him a bit.

The now foreign secretary is briefing the 1922 Committee of backbench Tory MPs this evening and some there aren't happy with the government's response to Chinese cyber attacks.

"Underwhelming," was the verdict of Tory MP Tim Loughton, one of those who the government said had been targeted by a Beijing-linked group.

Former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith said the deputy PM's announcement of sanctions against two individuals and one company was "like an elephant giving birth to a mouse".

"We've sanctioned just two… the Americans 40!"

On the Labour side, questions were asked about Lord Cameron's role as vice president of a £1bn China-UK investment fund.

Jon notes the opposition "demanded publication of the money he may have earned from China when he was out of government".

"If the exchanges in the Commons are anything to go by," says Jon, Lord Cameron "is in for a tough time" in front of MPs at the committee.

Before the government's announcement of sanctions against Chinese actors believed to have carried out cyber attacks against the UK, one of their targets vowed he "won't be bulled into silence".

Former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith appeared at a news conference with fellow Beijing critics Tim Loughton and Stewart McDonald.

All three have been sanctioned by the Chinese government, notably for comments about alleged human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang.

Sir Iain said they had suffered from harassment, impersonation, and attempted hacking for some time - you can watch some of his punchy media appearance below:

The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution that demands a ceasefire in Gaza for the rest of Ramadan.

The Muslim holy month began on 10 March and is set to finish on 9 April - meaning the council is calling for a two-week ceasefire, though the proposal said the pause in fighting should lead "to a permanent sustainable ceasefire".

The US abstained from the vote, with the 14 other council members - including Russia, China, and the UK - voting in favour.

The resolution also demanded the immediate, unconditional release of all hostages - not linked to a timeline - and "emphasises the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance to… the Gaza Strip".

After the vote, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cancelled a planned visit to Washington by a delegation as "the US withdrew from its consistent position".

Analysis by Tom Clarke , science and technology editor

The fact China is attempting to spy on the UK and others online should come as no surprise.

This latest announcement from government is more of reminder the activity is constant, and increasingly sophisticated.

The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has now implicated a Chinese-backed hacking group APT31 of attempting to target a group of MPs. 

There's a clue in the name: Advanced Persistent Threat is cybersecurity speak for groups usually backed by governments. 

A long list from APT16 to APT41 are hacking groups each with their own techniques and target areas suspected of being run by the Chinese state.

It's suggested APT31 used "spear phishing" to attempt to spy on members of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China. 

The same as phishing – in which a malicious file, typically embedded in an innocent-looking link in an email – spear phishing is targeted at a specific individual or group.

We have less information on the hack of the Electoral Commission back in 2021, which has now also been attributed to China. 

In this instance the hackers are believed to have had persistent access to the Electoral Commission's systems for months.

In response, the NCSC has updated guidance for political organisations and other institutions who could be at threat from such attacks, including updated guidance on a sophisticated threat called "living off the land".

This is a type of "fileless" attack that exploits native code used to manage server networks operated by large providers like Microsoft. 

Via an intrusion like a phishing attack, malicious code, disguised to look normal, is inserted straight into the target system's operating instructions bypassing virus scanning software.

The danger of this type of attack is it's hard for online security teams to spot an intrusion has happened, or to monitor the activity of hackers. 

Without very vigilant cybersecurity, hacks like this have been found to have persisted for long periods of time.

Last year, Microsoft announced a "living off the land" attack by Chinese-backed hacker group Volt Typhoon had been used to infiltrate US utilities and critical infrastructure companies from 2021 onwards.

A Conservative MP on the right of the party was almost as quick as the Chinese embassy to criticise the government's announcement about cyber attacks against UK targets this afternoon.

Of course, Robert Jenrick is coming at it from a rather different angle than the Chinese regime.

He has posted on X to say Downing Street is not going far enough by imposing sanctions against two people and one company linked to a Chinese state-affiliated group accused of targeting MPs.

Mr Jenrick said: "The government clearly is not holding China to account for their attack on our democracy."

'This will only embolden China'

Referring to the length of time since a 2021 attack on the Electoral Commission, he added: "Taking three years to sanction two individuals and a small company is derisory.

"This feeble response will only embolden China to continue its aggression towards the UK."

As we have heard from the deputy prime minister this afternoon, the government has blamed Chinese state-affiliated actors for carrying out cyber attacks in the UK ( see 15.37 post ).

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has assessed that a group called APT31 was "almost certainly" responsible for conducting online reconnaissance activity in 2021 against the email accounts of British MPs.

Most of those targeted had been "prominent in calling out the malign activity of China", the NCSC has said.

The centre - a part of GCHQ - also found that the compromise of computer systems at the Electoral Commission in 2021 and 2022 was carried out by someone linked to China.

Paul Chichester, the director of operations at NCSC, today said these "malicious activities" are "indicative of a wider pattern of unacceptable behaviour we are seeing from China state-affiliated actors against the UK and around the world".

He said: "The targeting of our democratic system is unacceptable and the NCSC will continue to call out cyber actors who pose a threat to the institutions and values that underpin our society.

"It is vital that organisations and individuals involved in our democratic processes defend themselves in cyberspace and I urge them to follow and implement the NCSC's advice to stay safe online."
