Rose Jaffe is best known for her colorful murals around Washington, D.C., especially her two-story depiction of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, painted on the side of a brick building on the city’s historic U Street. Initially, as a student at the School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan, she used only chromatic shades of black, gray, and white in her work But in the past decade, she has shifted course, drawing on colors across the spectrum for her murals, ceramics, woodblock prints, and mixed media works. Most recently, she has been experimenting with a new technique: monoprinting. “I’m using cut-out pieces of acetate, inking those up and laying them down, and then running it through the press,” she says.
During a recent fellowship at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, Jaffe started these experiments with monoprinting. “When I’m exploring a brand-new medium, I get obsessed, like what can I do here?” she explains. “I wanted something super vibrant, playing with new inks and seeing what new colors could be made when shapes overlap.” In her monoprints, figures silhouetted in bold primary colors dance across the composition, mixing and intertwining with geometric shapes. Her goal? To inspire feelings of joy in the viewer. “I think everyone needs a little bit of that right now,” she says. “There’s no overt political anything that I’m trying to say. These prints were a meditative healing process for me, to get lost in the shapes and colors, and I hope for other people, they can be a moment of lightness, too.”

Jennifer Coolidge is having a moment, but she's been working in Hollywood for decades — here's a timeline of her career
- Jennifer Coolidge will be honored with MTV's comedic genius award next month.
- She won a Golden Globe earlier this year for playing Tanya in HBO's "The White Lotus."
- She's also appeared in iconic movies and TV shows, like "American Pie" and "Seinfeld."
Although it took decades for Jennifer Coolidge to become a household name, she's been working towards stardom since childhood.
Jennifer Coolidge started acting long before she was known as the self-involved, air-headed Tanya McQuoid . Born in Norwell, Massachusetts, in 1961, she expressed interest in acting from an early age.
In a 2020 interview with US Weekly , she said, "When I was 10, I made [a] remake of 'Jaws.' My dad swam with a fin on his back and my sister was the shark victim."
In the same interview, Coolidge revealed another one of her creative interests. "I went to an orchestra camp for three summers," she said, "I played the clarinet. I thought I might do it for a living."
She holds a BA in theater from Emerson College and attended The American Academy of Dramatic Arts , graduating in 1982.
When becoming an actress was still a pipe dream for Coolidge, she worked at a bar in New York with fellow actress Sandra Bullock. In 2021, she reflected on her time there in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel , saying, "Let's just say, Sandra really had her act together ... I was, you know, partying a lot in those years, so it was like, sort of 50/50 whether I made the shift or not."
The Guardian reported that Coolidge was treated "brutally" during the beginning of her career — a casting agent reportedly told her she wouldn't land roles because she wasn't "good-looking enough."
Coolidge's first TV appearance was in 1993, as one of Jerry's dates in "Seinfeld."
Coolidge appeared as Jodi, one of Jerry's many brief flings. In the episode, titled "The Masseuse," Jerry is determined to get a professional massage from Jodi and breaks up with her when she refuses to comply with his demands.
In 2015, Coolidge told GQ that she lacked professional acting experience before booking her role on Seinfeld.
"I didn't really have any jobs before that," she said. "I only had lies on my resume ... I didn't even have decent clothes to audition in."
Starting in 1999, Coolidge played Jeanine Stifler, better known as Stifler's mom, in the "American Pie" franchise.
One of Coolidge's most notable roles is the seductive Jeanine Stifler in American Pie. She first portrayed Jeanine in 1999 and reappeared in the same role in the movie's sequel in 2001.
"There were so many benefits to doing that movie," she said in a 2022 interview with Variety, according to Entertainment Tonight. "There would have been like 200 people that I would never had slept with."
Her next standout role came in 2001, when Coolidge portrayed Paulette Bonafonté Parcelle in "Legally Blonde."
In "Legally Blonde" (and eventually, in, "Legally Blonde 2") Coolidge played the expressive nail technician who builds a trusting relationship with Elle (Reese Witherspoon).
In the film, Elle teaches Paulette the iconic "bend and snap" — a move that she claims is sure to get a man's attention.
Recently, according to E! News , Coolidge joked, "I've never had bending over work for me like it did in that movie. I think that the bend and snap is misleading."
She acted alongside Hilary Duff in the 2004 movie "A Cinderella Story."
In the early 2000s, Coolidge continued to land roles in TV shows and movies — among her dozens of appearances were cameos on "Friends" and "Sex and the City."
One of her next iconic roles was Fiona in "A Cinderella Story." While playing the self-involved and greedy stepmother of Sam (Duff), Coolidge showcased her iconic sense of humor.
During a conversation between Fiona and her stepdaughter, Sam, Fiona memorably says , "There's something I've always wanted to tell you and I think you're ready to hear it. You're not very pretty, and you're not very bright."
She adds, "I'm so glad we had that talk."
Following the film, Coolidge continued her stream of steady work, and she had recurring roles in early 2000s shows including "Joey," "Nip/Tuck," and "Party Down."
In 2011, Coolidge began playing Sophie, a recurring character on "2 Broke Girls."
Coolidge played Sophie Kachinsky, a Polish businesswoman with a thick accent, on "2 Broke Girls." Sophie, who is the upstairs neighbor of the show's main characters, is known for making sexually provocative and generally inappropriate comments.
Coolidge told People in 2015 that, as she gained popularity during her run on the show, a fan asked her to sign a box of maxi pads.
Coolidge believes that her 2018 appearance in Ariana Grande's "Thank U, Next" music video helped re-launch her career.
In a December 2022 Entertainment Weekly interview conducted by Grande , Coolidge expressed gratitude to the pop singer for her comeback.
"I was kind of flatlining, and you got things going for me. I just want to thank you," she told Grande.
"That is a very kind but wildly untrue thing to say," Grande replied. "I love you so much. I think the timing was just so beautiful, and you just deserved the entire world."
She called the "Thank U, Next" shoot with Coolidge "one of the most fun days of my entire life."
In the music video , which references various classic romantic comedies from the 1990s and early 2000s, Coolidge reprises her role as Paulette in "Legally Blonde," while Grande stands in for Reese Witherspoon's character, Elle.
She played a concerned mother in 2021's critically acclaimed "Promising Young Woman," straying from the temperament of her usual roles.
In "Promising Young Woman," Coolidge takes a break from providing comedic relief. In the film, Carey Mulligan plays Cassie, who takes on different personas to confront her would-be sexual attackers. Coolidge plays her concerned mother, deviating from the upbeat, dramatic characters she most often depicts.
In a 2021 interview with AV club , she said, "In playing Susan, I think I did steal from my own relationship with my mother. I felt like my mother was sort of naive to a lot of what was going on with me as a troubled teenager—kind of like you just said, she wasn't equipped."
At the time, Carrie Wittmer at GQ wrote , "Coolidge plays the role with a sincerity and subtlety that helps the film set its very intentional polarizing and subversive tone."
In 2021, Coolidge began receiving critical acclaim for her role in "The White Lotus."
In "The White Lotus," Coolidge put her unique sense of humor on display, portraying the eccentric, wealthy Tanya McQuoid. She appears in the first season, set in Hawaii, and the second season , set in Sicily, Italy.
In a December 2022 interview with Variety , Coolidge implied that her character is loosely based on her real personality, saying of the show's creator, Mike White: "Mike stole that from me, Jennifer Coolidge, and made it a Tanya thing — her obliviousness."
In the same interview, she reflected on what "The White Lotus" has meant for her career.
"'White Lotus' has opened a world of opportunities, and Mike White will be my friend forever, of course," she said.
Her performance in HBO's "The White Lotus" earned her a Primetime Emmy Award in 2022.
In 2022, Coolidge's portrayal of Tanya earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie.
In her acceptance speech , Coolidge said, "I just want to say, I took a lavender bath tonight ... and it made me swell up inside my dress, and I'm having a hard time speaking." Her comments were met with roaring laughter from the audience.
Coolidge's award wasn't the only honor given to "The White Lotus" during the 2022 award season — the show's first season ultimately won half of its 20 Emmy nominations.
Coolidge is one of just two characters that Mike White carried over to the show's second season — the other being her character's husband.
While all the other characters in the second season are completely new, Tanya and her husband, Greg (played by Jon Gries), provide a continuing thread from the first season.
Reflecting on her time on the show, Coolidge told Variety in December , "I never could have predicted this moment, and that's what's cool about life sometimes: Cool stuff is something you never thought of. I'm in a state of shock still, two years later."
In late 2022, Coolidge starred in Netflix's "The Watcher" as an abrasive real-estate agent.
In "The Watcher," Coolidge plays Karen, an outspoken, career-focused real-estate agent.
"You sort of dream of playing people like Karen Calhoun because it's not that much fun to just play someone who's extremely obedient and ordinary. I mean, she's sort of a wild card," she said in a 2022 interview with Tudum.
"The Watcher," a Ryan Murphy production, was highly successful following its October release. Less than two weeks after the show aired, it had already amassed 148.2 million hours watched .
In 2023, Coolidge won a Golden Globe for best supporting actress in a limited series for her portrayal of Tanya in season 2 of "The White Lotus."
The actress delivered a tearful speech as she thanked producers like Ryan Murphy for providing her with opportunities throughout her career that "kept [her] going."
"I had such big dreams and expectations as a younger person, but what happened was they get sort of fizzled by life and whatever," she said. "Mike White," she said, addressing the creator of "The White Lotus," "you have given me hope ... you've given me a new beginning."
MTV just announced that Coolidge will be honored with its comedic genius award in May.
According to MTV , the comedic genius award is given to actors who have made "incomparable contributions to the world of comedy," and have "[transformed] the genre at large." It has been granted to just five other actors in the award show's history.
In the network's official announcement , MTV described Coolidge as "supernaturally funny."
"As Tanya McQuoid, she graced both seasons with a presence both flighty and sympathetic," the statement said.
The MTV Movie & TV Awards will take place on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at 8 p.m. EST.

D.C. Muralist Rose Jaffe’s New Exhibit Uses Art to Heal
June 7, 2023 @ 1:00pm | mariah miranda.
Don’t miss the local artist’s show centered on the LGBTQIA+ community at The Corner at Whitman-Walker, now through June 18.
One of D.C.’s most prolific and established mural artists, Rose Jaffe, continues her personal practice with her first exhibition of the year, “Embodied: New Works,” set to open this weekend at The Corner at Whitman-Walker during the District’s official Pride weekend. The Corner was the entrance and lobby of the Whitman-Walker Clinic, which offered stigma-free care to LGBTQIA+ and HIV-positive community members during the HIV and AIDS epidemic. Now, the former lobby serves as an event and art gallery space for the community.
The exhibition is a follow-up to Jaffe’s “NATURAL CONNECTIONS,” which showed at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Hyattsville, Maryland in 2021. We caught up with Jaffe to hear about the significance of her exhibition venue, how she uses art as a tool for emotional processing and how her personal healing journey influences her work.

District Fray: What is this body of work about for you? Rose Jaffe: It’s about our collective connections with natural spaces and the healing it can provide us. Creating empathy and compassion for the natural world is a way for us to show up and be engaged, whether it’s climate justice on a large scale or smaller personal things. This is pretty tied to my own healing journey; finding connection and solace in nature is so important to me.
In January, I was writing and reflecting and I said, “I really want to do this next body of work.” And I thought, “NATURAL CONNECTIONS” is really about our connection to other people and nature. And this show is much more about our connection with ourselves.
In my healing journey, I was very disconnected with my physical body for so long. I got really sick in Southeast Asia and then my stomach was totally fucked up, and that took four to five more years to figure out.
I was going to tons of Western medicine doctors and really struggling with a lot of male doctors and people that just didn’t understand what’s going on with my body. This was all over a decade, and it’s a fragile thing for me to get to the point to talk about in part of the show. The journey of healing was so transformative. I was committed to not living in pain every day, saying, “I can’t continue to live life like this.” And that was the radical change that needed to happen. Coming out the other side of that has been just so — I don’t know, it’s hard to describe in words, which is why I make art to express through that.
Why choose Whitman-Walker as the space to debut this work? I feel like there will be a natural presence of queerness. I don’t feel the need to put a rainbow anywhere, you know? My work is super open and I don’t need to spell it out anymore when the work is doing it on its own. With the attacks on LGBTQ and trans folks, it’s important for me to have resources at the show when folks are coming in because it will be a tighter weekend with Pride celebrations.
What does your art practice mean to you? I think as a society, we’re just consuming a lot of fucked up shit all the time. Not enough people have the tools, whether it’s making art, dance, poetry. It’s an exercise, an outlet, basically some type of release. A part of me is taking things in, and it’s an essential part of processing and release to have art as an outlet.
When it comes to healing, time doesn’t feel linear. You think, three years from now you’re healed, you’re fine, but then something triggers you — a smell or a sensation — and you’re back in it. Because your body remembers what it feels like. The body is so resilient and amazing. I’m so proud of my body and my ability to do the work that needed to be done to change my situation and not through medicine. Lots of yoga, lots of meditation. Lots of reading, reflection and time in nature. Lots of time listening to my body, being like, “I need to sleep. I need to not do this.” The main thing was that I needed to decrease my stress, a main trigger for my chronic pain issues. And it took me a long time to figure that fucking thing out.
This show is a celebration of the power of what can happen when we listen, when we build that relationship with our body. Self-love is thrown around a lot, but that’s what it’s about, you know? It’s about understanding that I need to trust, listen to and love my body. And I think that’s where the most deep healing can happen. I found that love and non-judgment for myself.
Tell me more about the figures found in this series, but also in all of your work. They’re not gendered bodies. They’re just a representation of the body. I think that people will see what they want, and I have very little control over it. To me, it’s more about finding love in our bodies and celebrating however they are.
I wanted to reference photos I have of dancers because I’m really inspired by how they are very connected to their physical bodies. I love that [in the images] they were all friends, so there was a lot of holding, connecting, being together. The show is really about those moments of “I got you,” a theme of togetherness.
The connection you have to this series is deeply personal. How do you feel about sharing the physical proof of your internal processing in a public space? There’s plenty of artists that just make art for them and sharing the art isn’t a big piece of it. I’ve always loved sharing my work. It’s a big component of the making of the work for me. And so I’m really aware of the physical feeling people get when they look at my art when they’re in the space. I want people to feel like they can see themselves in these figures. That they come away feeling maybe inspired or happier, which I think is not a small thing for a lot of people.
My healing journey has been very personal and very solo. It was something I wanted to do by myself; it was a journey I needed to do for myself. It allowed me to exist in relationships in such a better way — all of my relationships. The relationship ultimately started with my relationship with myself to be like, “All right, let’s really get digging here and get in there.”
I have tools now that I’ve learned. I feel like I’m out of the brunt of the daily pain. It’s now a daily practice. And I think that the show is me coming out of the other side of that pain.
Jaffe’s newest exhibit, “Embodied: New Works,” will be on view at The Corner at Whitman-Walker June 9-18. An opening reception will take place June 9 at 6 p.m with a closing reception June 18 at 2 p.m. To learn more and RSVP, visit the exhibition event page .

Where Is Gypsy Rose Blanchard Now?
Released from prison in December 2023, Gypsy Rose Blanchard has been busy in her first months of freedom.
We may earn commission from links on this page, but we only recommend products we back.
On Thursday, Blanchard revealed in a Facebook post she and husband Ryan Scott Anderson have separated just three months after her release. “I have the support of my family and friends to help guide me through this. I am learning to listen to my heart. Right now I need time to let myself find… who I am,” she said, according to People .
Blanchard married Anderson while incarcerated in July 2022 and had spoken of their big plans for the future. However, those now appear to be on hold.
The past three months have included a flurry of activity for the convicted murderer. Here’s what to know about Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s life now.
She wants people to learn from her mistake
Gypsy published a book in january 2024, after joining social media, gypsy deleted her accounts, gypsy is separating from her husband, gypsy rose will star in a new reality series, gypsy was released from prison in december 2023.
According to The Cincinnati Enquirer , Blanchard was released on parole from the Chillicothe Correctional Center at around 3:30 a.m. on December 28, 2023, after serving 85 percent of her 10-year sentence for second-degree murder. “I’m ready for freedom,” she told People in an interview just before her release. “I’m ready to expand, and I think that goes for every facet of my life.”
Blanchard conspired with an ex-boyfriend to kill her mother Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard in June 2015 after suffering years of abuse. Experts have surmised that Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental disorder in which a caretaker makes someone sick or gives the illusion of being ill in order to garner attention. She led doctors and the community to believe that Gypsy Rose suffered from an array of fake illnesses such as asthma, leukemia, and muscular dystrophy, subjecting her to unnecessary treatments and procedures.
In 2021, Gypsy Rose told The Springfield News-Leader she hoped to rebuild relationships with the rest of her family upon her eventual release. Her stepmother, Kristy Blanchard, told NewsNation host Ashleigh Banfield she looked forward to belatedly celebrating Christmas with Gypsy Rose upon her release and also planned a spa day for her.
In an interview with People , Blanchard expressed remorse about her mother’s murder and the events that preceded it.
Blanchard testified she met ex-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn on a Christian dating website in 2012, and they initially carried out a secret relationship. They met in person for the first time in March 2015 and, shortly after, began plotting to kill her mother. Godejohn stabbed Dee Dee 17 times inside her home in June 2015. Gypsy said in 2018 she “talked him into it” because she wanted to be free from her mother. Godejohn was eventually found guilty of first-degree murder in 2018 and sentenced to life in prison.
“If I had another chance to redo everything, I don’t know if I would go back to when I was a child and tell my aunts and uncles that I’m not sick and mommy makes me sick. Or, if I would travel back to just the point of that conversation with Nick and tell him, ‘You know what, I’m going to go tell the police everything.’ I kind of struggle with that,” she told People in December 2023.
Gypsy Rose now wants to use her story to help people in abusive relationships. No matter how dire the circumstances, she wants to make sure they don’t resort to murder. “It may seem like every avenue is closed off, but there is always another way. Do anything, but don’t take this course of action,” she said.
Released: Conversations on the Eve of Freedom
Hoping to be an advocate for other victims of Munchausen by proxy, Blanchard first told The News-Leader in 2021 she was writing a book detailing the years-long abuse by Dee Dee and her incarceration.
True to her word, Blanchard published an e-book titled Released: Conversations on the Eve of Freedom in January 2024. The book includes exclusive information about Blanchard’s time in prison, as well as personal photos, drawings, and illustrations from her past.
Even before the book’s release, Blanchard already opened up about the effect of her incarceration on her life. “I’m the type of person that, I will make a mistake, learn from it and move on, and hopefully never make it again,” she told The Hollywood Reporter . “So I definitely think that that level of maturity kicked in, and you can see the the transformation from when I first got to prison to me actually walking out of prison and feeling, as a confident woman, like I could stand my ground, say no when I need to, be my best advocate.”
Blanchard had amassed as many as 7.8 million followers on her public Instagram account ( @gypsyrose_a_blanchard ) following her release but recently deleted that page—as well as several others on social media, including her X ( @GypsyRose_B ) and TikTok accounts ( gypsyroseblanchard727 ).
Shortly before logging out of TikTok in March 2024, she explained in a series of videos that her father, Rod Blanchard, offered advice that sparked the decision. “That guidance was to show me that real life is something you can touch, something you can feel, people you can actually hug,” she said, according to Rolling Stone . “And with the public scrutiny as bad as it is, I just don’t want to live my life under a microscope.”
She continued: “I do my best to live my authentic life and what’s real to me, and what’s not real is social media. Social media is literally a doorway to hell.”
Her words mark a sharp departure from an initial flurry of posts celebrating her release. Only one day after leaving prison, Blanchard posted a photo to Instagram with a celebratory caption: “First selfie of freedom!” Then on New Year’s Eve, she revealed via TikTok she was celebrating the holiday with members of her family—including her father; her stepmother, Kristy; and her husband, Ryan—and had joined Snapchat ( gr_blanchard ).
Gypsy Rose isn’t totally gone from social media though. In her announcement on TikTok, she shared she set up a private verified Instagram account.
Years removed from her relationship with Godejohn, Blanchard found love while imprisoned. She married Ryan Scott Anderson, a teacher from Louisiana, in June 2022. Before gaining her freedom, Gypsy Rose told People , “When I’m at home with my family, with my husband’s arms around me and I’m surrounded by my loved ones, that is when I will be happy.”
According to People , Anderson, now 37, picked up Blanchard from prison when she was released. The couple initially kept details of their relationship, including how they met, private. However, Blanchard talked extensively about Anderson on the third night of the Lifetime docuseries and revealed the couple planned to have a bigger, more traditional wedding in the future.
On February 27, Anderson even sparked rumors Gypsy Rose might be pregnant by posting a photo to Instagram of himself embracing her belly as a dog lay nearby with the caption: “Me and my little family cuddling together.” However, neither publicly confirmed or denied the gossip.
Their wedding plans were not to be. Gypsy Rose announced in a March 2024 post to Facebook she had moved in with her father and stepmother in Louisiana amid a separation from Anderson.
After airing the three-night docuseries The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard in January 2024, the Lifetime network announced in February that Blanchard will be featured in a new series chronicling her life outside of prison . The new unscripted show will begin in the days leading up to her release on December 28. A premiere date hasn’t been announced.
Prison Confessions was a major hit for the network, averaging 1.1 million viewers with three days of delayed viewing, according to The Hollywood Reporter . “Millions have followed Gypsy’s story and are invested in seeing what is in store for her next,” said Elaine Frontain Bryant, executive vice president and head of programming for Lifetime.
