If you’re looking for your first job, you may be wondering what to put on your resume. While you may not have any formal job experience yet, you almost certainly have gained skills and other experiences through your education and extracurricular activities. 

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how to write a resume for your first job when you have no experience. Learn how to identify your most marketable skills and experiences, and how to format your resume to show them off.

What is a resume?

A resume is a formal document that presents your background, accomplishments, and skills to potential employers. When you submit a job application, your resume is typically the first thing a recruiter or hiring manager looks at to evaluate whether you’re a good fit for the role.

Outside of the United States and in academic settings, a resume is often referred to as a Curriculum Vitae, or CV for short. The Latin term means “course of life.”

How to write a resume with no work experience

Many job listings ask for relevant experience. But just because you haven’t had a job before, doesn’t mean you don’t have experience. Your experience happens to come from outside the workplace. For a first job, your resume should concentrate on your academic achievements, as well as any informal work, volunteer experience, or extracurricular activities.

Here are some steps you can take to create a resume for your first job.

1. Pick the right layout.

The bulk of many resumes focuses on job experience, listed from latest to oldest. If you don’t have job experience to list, pick a resume format that includes an education section closer to the top.

2. Match your experiences to the job listing.

Writing a solid resume begins with studying the job description for the role you’re applying for. You want your resume to match up with what the company is looking for, so start by making a list of the key terms from the job description. 

Go through the job description, and write down or highlight all the abilities, skills, and values listed within. Pay close attention to those listed as required. 

Now, think about experiences in your own life that match up with the items on the list. If the job listing asks for someone with strong organizational skills, think about times when you’ve had to be particularly organized. Maybe you helped plan a school event or led a group project.

It’s okay if you don’t have something for every item. Keep this list nearby as you begin to fill in your resume template.  

3. Focus on your education.

You may find it helpful to start with the education section of your resume. List your school and dates attended, as well as:

Relevant coursework: Have you taken classes that relate to the job you’re applying for (or from your job description research)? Be sure to list them.

GPA: A strong GPA (typically a 3.5 or higher) can show employers that you have the skills and work ethic to succeed in the job.

Academic achievements: Also include anything else that demonstrates your ability to succeed academically—making the dean’s list or the National Honor Society for example.

Extracurricular activities: Focus on the activities that align with the job listing. Involvement in student council, for example, could demonstrate leadership skills, collaboration, and problem-solving. Playing a team sport shows that you can collaborate and manage your time.

Certifications or online courses: If you’ve taken any training, bootcamps, courses, or certification programs outside of school, include them here if relevant.

If you’re still enrolled in a program, list it as “in progress” with your anticipated graduation date.

4. Highlight volunteer work and extracurricular activities.

Next, add in an experience section. While you may not have formal work experience, you should include any volunteer work, community activities, internships, or informal work experience (like tutoring, blogging, or helping with a family business) that’s relevant to the job. 

As you fill in this section, refer back to the list you created in Step 2. You don’t have to include everything; instead, focus on your experiences that align with terms that appear higher up in the job description, or those listed as required rather than preferred.

5. List your technical and human skills.

Include a list of skills as bullet points on your resume that highlights both your human skills and any technical skills you may have.

Technical vs. workplace skills

Human skills, sometimes called soft skills or workplace skills, are those that apply to just about any job. Some examples include communication, decision making, leadership, time management, and problem-solving. Technical or hard skills tend to be more job specific. These might include programming languages, software proficiency, or knowledge of a foreign language.

The skills you list in your resume should reflect what’s listed in the job description. For technical skills , also include your level of proficiency. If you’re still developing a skill, for example, you could write, “Familiar with Excel spreadsheets.”

It’s okay if you don’t have many technical skills to list. A study from job site LinkedIn found that 80 percent of companies value candidates with better workplace or human skills, which can be harder to teach [ 1 ]. The five most in-demand human skills in 2020, according to LinkedIn, were [ 2 ]:

6. Write your resume objective.

This short statement goes at the top of your resume to summarize your skills. It’s usually a good idea to write this last once you have a better idea of what’s in your resume. Keep it to one or two sentences that state who you are, what you want, and what you can offer the employer.

Tips for preparing your first resume

Now that you’ve filled in most of your resume, here are some tips to help make it stand out:

Keep it to a single page. This is especially true if you’re not including work experience. Include what’s relevant to the job, and leave out the rest.

Use action verbs when describing your skills and experiences. Try to start sentences with verbs (e.g. designed, guided, led, improved, established, managed).

Include the same words and terms from the job listing. Many companies use what’s called an applicant tracking system (ATS) to sort applications by keywords. When you use the same words and phrases as the job description, you might increase your chances of getting your resume noticed.

Customize your resume for each job. Each job posting will have different keywords and requirements. You don’t have to start over each time, but make sure to adjust your resume for each job you apply to.

Proofread. Make sure your resume is free of any spelling, grammatical, or punctuation errors. If possible, ask a friend or family member to proofread for you as well.

Include your contact information , including your full name, phone number, and email address.

How to Write a Resume for Your First Job

If you are a current student or recent graduate, you may feel you lack enough experience to draft a resume for your first job. It is important to remember you can use personal life experience, skills and activities for your resume. By using those experiences, and emphasizing the skills employers are looking for, you can find writing your first resume easier than it may seem.  This article explains the steps to help draft your first resume along with some tips to get your resume noticed by the hiring manager.

How to write your first resume

When creating the first draft of your resume, you should get all of the information you can into each section and then edit it down to what is relevant. 

When writing your resume, you will need to include these items:

1. First, include contact information in your resume

The beginning of your resume should include all of your relevant contact information. Your contact information should be included below the header of the resume in case it is put through recruitment software, which may disregard headers and footers. Contact information should include:

  • Email address
  • Phone numbers
  • Home address, if you choose

2. Second, include an opening statement in your resume

Your opening statement will be a summary of who you are and briefly where you studied or worked that make you a good fit for the job you are applying for. This is the section where you will need to tailor each resume to the job you are applying for, making sure it is relevant to the industry or position.

This section should be between five and seven lines and written in the first person. The opening line will need to be a strong statement of who you are and why you are applying. The following sentences should be supporting information, such as skills and attributes you have that make you the ideal candidate.

3. Third, include strengths and skills in your resume

In this section, you should include between 10 and 15 skills you possess that make you a promising job candidate. Make sure you thoroughly read the job posting so you know the relevant skills to include. Make sure you address key skills that match the required or essential job skill list, then delve into skills that they desire in a potential candidate. If they have not listed many skills, choose skills you believe would make you the ideal candidate. 

You can draw on skills from:

  • Previous jobs you’ve had
  • Areas you’ve studied
  • Internships
  • Volunteer or community involvement

4. Fourth, include computer and software skills in your resume

Every position will require some level of technological, computer or software-related skills. In this section, you will need to list all programs and technologies you have experience and demonstrated use of, starting with the skills required for the job position. 

Some areas to include are:

  • Spreadsheet and word processing software
  • Accounting programs
  • Programming languages
  • Specialized equipment
  • Web and graphic design software
  • Technological tools

5. Fifth, include your educational history in your resume

When listing your educational history, you will only need to include your highest level of education and any advanced degrees you hold. If your highest level of education was a bachelor’s degree, there is no need to list your high school education. If you hold a master’s degree or doctorate, you should list them as well. If you have specific academic achievements, list them in bullet points below the earned degree.

6. Sixth, include your employment history in your resume

When completing the employment history section, you will start with your current or most recent employment and work backward. 

Each job listing should include:

  • The company’s name
  • Your position title 
  • The employment dates
  • The performed duties

With your first resume, you may have little or no employment history. 

If this is the case you can include:

  • Work experience that occurred during your education
  • Volunteer work and community service

With each job listing, you should list any achievements that you had while at the job. Focus on the key skills the new job requires when determining which achievements to highlight.

When listing your accomplishments and achievements, make sure they are quantified with facts and figures whenever possible. For example, instead of saying you increased social media interaction during your employment, say you increased viewership on social media channels by 30% over six months through your initiatives. If part of your experience is through volunteer work, you may discuss how your organization raised and contributed $50,000 to a charity’s fundraiser.

7. Seventh, include your certifications and licenses in your resume

If you had any additional training that resulted in professional licenses or certifications, or if the job requirements include certification, list all of your relevant licenses and certificates. In this section, list the certification and the date it was obtained.

8. Eighth, include your references in your resume

Your resume should always include at least two people who can provide you with a positive recommendation that would show why you would be a good employee. The best references are typically those who you have worked for, but if this is for your first job, educators or other volunteers who have worked with you can make strong references as well. Include their name, their position title and their best contact information.

9. Last, edit your resume thoroughly

The final step in your resume writing process is to review and proofread it with a discerning eye. Check for grammar and spelling mistakes, as well as structural issues that can make it difficult to read. Read each section aloud, and remove anything that is distracting or interrupts the flow of the information.

There are a few things that can help you get noticed in a positive way by a hiring manager and allow your resume to stand out. 

Here are a few tips for writing your resume:

Remove anything that is not relevant from your resume

It can be easy to get caught up in accomplishments when you are trying to make your resume stand out, but if any of the information is irrelevant to the job posting, remove it. For example, if you are applying for a job in the IT field, an award for football is hardly relevant and may seem distracting.

Keep your resume short and concise

Your resume is your introduction to the hiring manager and will hopefully pique their interest enough for them to call you in for an interview. Keep your resume to a short summary that fits on one page. If you want to delve deeper into your experience or specific skills, that is what you will bring to the interview.

Use action and power words in your resume whenever possible

A hiring manager will be more interested in resumes that focus on action, and using these words may help compel the manager to call you in for the interview process. Action and power words are direct, clear and concise. 

Some examples to include in your resume are:

  • Implemented
  • Streamlined

Create a professional design for your resume

Depending on how many people are applying for your specific position, you are likely to have 20 to 30 seconds for a hiring manager to see your resume. This means making your resume eye-catching and easy to read is crucial. Choose a design that is simple, elegant and professional, making sure to avoid any patterns that are too busy. 

Other ways to make your resume more visually appealing are: 

  • Use common, easy-to-read font styles such as Cambria, Calibri or Helvetica
  • Keep your font size at 12 or 14 point
  • Maintain appropriate spacing
  • Use bullet points when appropriate
  • Keep the margins at 1 inch all around

Add keywords to your resume

Keywords can be pretty significant when a company is using recruiting software to scan their applicants. Start by creating a list of keywords and skills that come up when searching for the type of job you are applying for. Try to use these keywords in various sections of your resume, making sure they sound natural. This can even be beneficial when resume software is not used as resumes are first typically scanned for certain skills and words by the hiring manager. Adding the right keywords can help you get to the next level in the hiring process.

Know the Purpose

Identify the goal of the resume. A resume to get a job as a lifeguard has a different purpose than one for getting a philanthropic academic scholarship. Review the job description or qualifications and make a list of the essential requirements and preferred requirements.

The essential requirements, or must-haves, are fixed or firm prerequisites such as: “Must have a clean driver’s license” if applying to be a delivery driver; or “Must have a GPA of 3.5” if applying for a specific academic program. These requirements are usually not flexible, and your resume should show that you meet them to be considered.

Preferred or ideal qualifications are nice to have, but may be flexible or could be satisfied a different way. A preferred qualification might be written as “Previous retail experience preferred” or “Applicants with volunteer work in social justice preferred.” If you have the preferred qualifications, be sure to include those qualifications. If you don’t have an exact preferred qualification but something similar, you can include it in your resume.

For example, while you may not have retail experience but have volunteered multiple times at the local thrift clothing store , that work can show you are interested in clothing and have some experience with a retail environment. The addition of similar experience is useful if it helps to make you more qualified than someone else who has no preferred or similar qualifications.

Choose a Simple Document Format

You can start with a blank document or use a resume template on Word or Google, but be sure to select one that is simple, without graphics, tables or other complex formatting styles. Often those templates do not load correctly or clearly into the Applicant Tracking Systems that are used as databases of candidates. Complex templates can also be difficult to update later. Most ATS do best with Word documents when submitted online via a posting portal.

Each resume section except for your contact information and your summary can have a title to separate it. You can use something as simple as: "Education, Experience, Skills" to designate each area. All caps, small caps, bold or just a little color and/or an underline can be effective ways to add some style to the section headings while still having a clean, easy to read appearance. A teen resume should almost always be one page, in 10-11 point font with standard page margins.

If emailing a resume, a PDF version works. If you're bringing it in-person, you can use anything that results in a professional and easy to read format on a clean, unfolded piece of white printer paper.

Professional Contact Information

In the body of the resume – not in a header – include your name as you would want it on a paycheck, your best contact phone number and a professional email address. This is not the time to use [email protected]. Instead, use an email address that is a combination of your first and last name or something else that is simple and professional. Be sure it is an email address that you check multiple times a day – including spam and clutter folders. You do not need to put in your full address, but having your city and state can be helpful if you are applying to a local neighborhood opportunity. For a more competitive or business-related opportunity, you can include a link to your LinkedIn profile, if you have one.

Summary or Objective Statement

Sometimes a resume may become separated from the pile of similar applicants. To ensure that the reader knows your target or goal in submitting a resume, include a statement of purpose. For example: “High school junior targeting a full-time summer job as a lifeguard. Able to start as of June 1 and available to work full time until Aug. 15. Can work part time during the school year.”

For many teenagers, your education is often your most significant accomplishment and qualification so far. List your school, your grade level and include additional information such as relevant classes. For example, you can list having an A in biology if you're applying to a biology program or your three years playing lacrosse if you are applying for a coaching job in your town's parks and recreation department. If you have a 3.0 GPA or above, you can include that too. You can also include any certifications or other training that is important for the role, such as CPR or a lifeguard certification.

Experience – whether it's paid, unpaid, part-time , full-time or on a volunteer basis – can do a lot to add to your credentials. Include any experience that shows you have done similar work, but also include any experience that shows you are reliable, trustworthy, hardworking or interested in the type of business or industry. To an employer, a candidate who has been hired or managed by someone else seems “less risky” than one who has never held responsibilities outside of the home or school. Some examples could be volunteering each week at the church nursery, watching your neighbor’s cats every time they go out of town or helping the drama teacher to set up and clean up after every performance at the high school.

Add Other Relevant Content

Some additional sections you can include are: skills , technology tools, awards/achievements, sports, clubs, hobbies and interests. The key here is to limit these to only things that will add value to your credentials. No need to include that you love playing Minecraft if you are not applying to a video game camp as a group leader, for example.

Review Your Work

Proof and edit online, print it out and proof it again. Then, ask a couple of other people – adults or people who have a vested interest in your resume representing you well – to review it too. You would much rather catch an error with a trusted contact than to miss out on an opportunity because of an autocorrect mistake.

When built correctly from the start, your resume can continue to evolve without much effort as you add more to your qualifications. See a sample teen resume below.

Writing your first-ever resume can be a challenge. How do you sell yourself to an employer when you’re a student who doesn’t have any experience in your targeted field?

When writing your first resume with no formal work experience, it's appropriate to include casual jobs like babysitting, pet sitting, lawn mowing, and shoveling snow. You can also include volunteering, internships, and school and community activities.

All experience counts, and the best way you present yourself, your skills, and your assets to a hiring manager is to provide them with a strong resume that showcases your own unique talents.

Here's how to write your first resume, what to include, how to show employers the skills you have, a sample resume to review, and a template you can use to get started writing your resume.

To get started, review information on the  different parts of a resume  and what is included in each element. It's a good idea to review high school resume examples to get an idea of what is appropriate. Even if you've never held a formal job, you still have important life experience that's applicable to the job search.

Don't forget to look at volunteer work, civic groups, and youth organizations (for example, the Scouts or 4-H). The skills you have developed doing these things have given you valuable experience that will impress employers.

The bottom line is that you actually have a lot more experience than you think you have.

Writing your first resume  can seem intimidating, but if you take it step-by-step, you will be able to put together a document that will highlight your abilities and show the hiring manager that you’re worth calling for an interview.

Start by mining your life experience and academic achievements to show that you'll be an asset to the company, despite the fact that you don't have any related job titles to show off at this stage in your career.

For your first resume, take the soft skills (also known as “people skills”) you have and show how they translate into success where you choose to apply them. Include volunteer experience, school achievements, sports, clubs, and organizations you belong to.

Scan the job descriptions for the positions to which you're applying. Look for keywords that indicate what the hiring manager values in a candidate.

For example, the job listing might say, "Successful candidate will be a self-starter who delivers on time and on budget." In that case, despite the fact that you don't have relevant work experience in the same field, you can get the hiring manager's attention by being sure to include (and emphasize) projects that you've successfully led, such as high school clubs in which you held a leadership role that required you to manage both your time and the team's money.

Other “ people skills ” that employers often seek in entry-level job applicants include traits like dependability, good communication and organizational skills, a solid work ethic, and teamwork.

If you start with the job listings instead of with the blank page, the hiring manager's keywords will guide you, and help you focus on which of your academic or after-school experiences have prepared you for this first step in your career.

Once you've compiled a list of what you need in your resume, it should include:

  • Contact information
  • Experience (casual work, volunteering, clubs, youth organizations, teams)
  • Skills (related to the job)
  • Awards and Achievements (academic and extracurricular)

Tips Preparing Your​​ First Resume

  • Don't lie.  No matter how tempting it might be to stretch the truth, lying on your resume is always a bad idea. You might make it through this round of interviews and even get the job, but you won't be able to deliver on the promises your resume offered. Plus, you'll probably be caught—and fired.
  • Don't pad.  You don't need to include the line "references upon request," or personal information beyond your contact information, or a bunch of unrelated hobbies. In fact, there's a lot of  stuff you don't need to put on your resume , even when it's your first one.
  • Proofread.  Nothing is less persuasive than a resume full of typos and inconsistencies. Have a trusted friend or family member  proofread your resume  before you submit it.

As an undergraduate student, you are probably thinking that the last three or four years at university have just flown by. You have been working, studying, burning the midnight oil, partying and generally having the best time of your life.

For some, your university experience might not be over yet, if you plan to do some postgraduate studies. For others, it can be an anxious and stressful time coming to the end of your years at university. You might be preparing for your final exams, while also beginning to think about what to do next.

Over the last few years, you might have had the chance to work part time. But now you might be starting to consider applying to your first “proper” job.

Here are my top tips for building a strong CV.  

1. Review your existing CV  

The first thing I would suggest is to open your current CV. Check that all the information is up to date, clear and concise and, most importantly, make sure it shows all the experience you have that is relevant for the type of jobs you are going to apply for.  

2. Compare qualifications  

Look at the job role, what is required of the applicant and the qualifications they are looking for. If these details are all relevant to you, revisit your CV and ensure that those required qualifications are clearly listed.  

3. Identify less quantifiable skills  

Look at real advertised jobs in your field to get an idea of what recruitment teams are looking for. A quick glance at a few graduate roles will not only highlight qualifications you can list on your CV but also less quantifiable skills. These are equally as important, as they will help you satisfy the companies’ requirements when you apply.

For example, one company might be looking for someone who wants to start their career in sales and business development. They will need someone who is a clear communicator, personable, outgoing and professional, someone who also has a strong work ethic and shows good stamina in the face of rejection.

4. Assess your skills  

Ask yourself which of these skills you have. Are you good at getting your point across in a discussion? Did you do some presentations at university? How were they received? Are you good at starting conversations, talkative and personable?

Even if you don’t have sales experience, you can use other experiences and jobs to show that you have these skills.  

You could mention what you did during a final-year project. Perhaps you worked in a team, gave a group presentation, received an A grade and so on. Or you might have been involved in a society or sports team where you showed examples of these skills.  

5. Stand out  

You want to try your best to stand out and gain the attention of a recruiter when you send in your CV. If an employer gets 50 job applications for just one job, then at best they will spend a few minutes glancing at all the applicants and choosing the best ones.  

Make sure you show that you meet all the criteria and have an interest in the role. This will put you in a strong position against other applicants.  

Do your research on the company and make sure that you make it very clear that you know exactly what the role involves and how you can contribute to it.

6. Complete a final review  

Now that you have done your research and edited your CV, do a final review. Make sure that your spelling and grammar are correct. Ensure you have included all the relevant information, such as dates and job titles where relevant, and your contact information is clearly included.  

7. Repeat  

Each time you find a job in which you are interested, it’s important to repeat this process each time and tailor your CV for each different role you apply for. This way you will have a strong CV that is relevant for every role you apply to. Not only will that make sure your CV is strong, but it will also show you have done your research into each job individually.  

This process can sometimes be quite daunting, because you think to yourself “do I have the right qualifications and the experience that an employer wants?”

Believe in yourself – you’ve come this far and getting the job is the next natural step.
