We’re All in This Together: Teamwork and Unity

Mike Krzyewski is college basketball’s all-time winningest coach. Duke basketball fans know him as Coach K because he has been head basketball coach at Duke University since 1980. And he knows a few things about teamwork and unity.

“When you first assemble a group,” he once said , “it’s not a team right off the bat. It’s only a collection of individuals.”

And each of those individuals is … well … individual.

So, how do you get a gaggle of formerly disconnected individuals to become a team, working together successfully toward a common goal? Psychologists recently proposed the existence of a “ collective intelligence factor ” for teams. They call it the c-factor, for short. A recent New York Times opinion piece summarized the studies. Here’s what those studies uncovered: When seeking the characteristics of successful teams, researchers discovered that a team’s success correlates with three common attributes:

All members contribute equally to group discussions, without allowing one or two individuals to dominate.

Team members can read emotions in the eyes of their teammates.

The team is composed of more women than men.

I know. One of these things is not like the others. Why do teams work better with women? The scientists suspect that women, on average, are better at reading emotions, one of the key correlations of successful teams.

Teamwork can seem like a bit of a tired buzzword these days, but it is extremely important to us at The High Calling and the H. E. Butt Family Foundation. David Rogers, president of the H. E. Butt Family Foundation, has made it one of our core expectations. He unpacks the idea like this:

“Through shared responsibility, we serve others well. Departments and individuals respect and help one another as challenges and opportunities arise.”

In other words, we’re here for each other. Respecting others means allowing members to contribute equally to group discussions. It means reading each other’s emotions.

In a culture that encourages us to think about “me first,” it’s refreshing to remember we are, indeed, stronger together. Just like the old African proverb states, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Maybe all we really need to know about teamwork comes down to this advice:

“ … no matter how significant you are, it is only because of what you are a part of … What we have is one body with many parts, each its proper size and in its proper place. No part is important on its own … When it’s a part of your own body you are concerned with, it makes no difference whether the part is visible or clothed, higher or lower. You give it dignity and honor just as it is, without comparisons.” (See 1 Cor. 12:19-24 )

And so, there it is again: We are here for one another. Extroverts. Introverts. Word people. Numbers people. Visionaries. Detail people. Speech writers. Speech givers. Leaders. Followers. And everyone in between.

Bring what you’ve got to the table, and recognize the important role you play as part of the team. Resist the urge to assign more value to one personality type over another—whether your own or someone else’s. We’ve all seen teams get distracted when one person hogs the ball or the spotlight. In contrast, we’ve seen the beauty of a team that works really well together, while at the same time serving one another with humility.

Humility creates space for everyone to contribute. Humility values others enough to tune in to their emotions. In an NPR interview , David Brooks, author of The Road to Character , reminds us to keep a balanced perspective, without allowing space for boasting. Here’s an excerpt from that interview:

The day after Japan surrendered in 1945 and World War II ended, singer Bing Crosby appeared on the radio program Command Performance. "Well it looks like this is it," he said. "What can you say at a time like this? You can't throw your skimmer in the air—that's for a run-of-the-mill holiday. I guess all anybody can do is thank God it's over."

New York Times columnist David Brooks cites this and other aspects of that 70-year-old radio program as evidence that America once marked triumph without boasting.

"I was really struck at this supreme moment of American triumph that they weren't beating their chests," he tells NPR's Audie Cornish. "They weren't super proud of themselves; they were deeply humble. And I found that so beautiful and so moving. And I thought there's really something to admire in that public culture."

This is our goal as people of faith: serving one another with humility and working together as a unified group. That doesn’t mean we’ll always agree or see the world the same way. But, we can live into the role we’ve been given, recognize and honor the significance of each person’s contributions, and serve one another with respect as challenges arise.

But the tree was huge and wouldn’t budge. So the monkey climbed up the tree and plucked the fruit. He climbed down, sat on the elephant’s back, and they reached the wise owl.

The owl then asked, “Of the two of you, who brings this fruit to me?” The monkey said he did because he plucked the fruit from the tree and the elephant said he did because he helped the monkey get onto the other side of the river. At this point, the wise owl stopped the argument and said, “Each one of us has unique abilities and strengths. Collectively as a team, we can achieve the impossible. All because we used your strength at the right time to do the right thing.”

Teamwork is the collective effort made by each member of a team to achieve the team goal. Individually, we all have certain skills, and we are good in one area. If all of us come together and use our strength and expertise in the right direction, then it will give the best result. There is no perfect team. But there is a recipe for success – many similar characteristics shared by effective teams, independent of industry or function. Throughout this blog series, we will take a closer look at each of these characteristics, explore why each is important, and provide you with ways to instill and improve each characteristic within your own team.

Part Two: Many Voices, But One Message

American poet Mattie Stepanek once said, “Unity is strength…when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.” But what exactly is unity and how do you ensure your team, whether a sports team or group of coworkers, is united?

What is Unity and Why is it Important?

  • The state of being in full agreement
  • The quality or state of not being multiple
  • A condition of harmony
  • The quality or state of being made one
  • A totality of related parts:  an entity that is a complex or systematic whole

With any team, unity or teamwork is important. It is what allows a team to run like a well-oiled machine and achieve success. As the title of this section says, “Many Voices, But One Message.” Without such unity, your team – ANY team – is doomed for failure. This is perhaps never more important than in the workplace, where you throw a group of unrelated individuals together and expect them to easily communicate and work together to achieve a common goal. In fact, according to Talent Management, 86% of employees blame lack of collaboration for workplace failures. So, it is up to senior leadership to breed unity, encourage collaboration, and ensure the team works together and not against itself.

How to Encourage Unity

As Andrew Carnegie once said, “Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision.” But how do you get everyone on the same page, working together?

  • Clearly Define Goals: It is important that every member of the team knows and understands the company’s goals. Without a clearly-defined finish line and plan to reach that finish line, everyone will ultimately run in different directions.
  • Clearly Define Roles: It is also incredibly important that everyone knows their place within the team. As the old saying goes, “Too many cooks spoil the broth.” similarly, in the workplace, too many leaders – too many voices – slow the process, lead to missed deadlines, unproductive behavior, errors, and ultimately failure.
  • Choose Strong Leadership: Poor leadership prevents teams from coming together and realizing their full potential. So, it is of the utmost importance that managers, as well as team and project leaders, are chosen carefully, according to their strengths and abilities to motivate others.
  • Reward Success: Along the way, you should let your team know how they are doing by rewarding teamwork and unity – send a congratulatory email, buy your employees breakfast, plan a team happy hour. There are numerous fun and creative ways to reward your team and let them know you appreciate their hard work.
  • Encourage Open Communication: Unity is also achieved by listening and being open to other points of view. Dissenting opinions during the brainstorming process creates buy in by team members even if the selected path is different than what an individual suggested. Allowing people to share their points of view also fosters better decision making and avoids “group think.”
  • Work at It: Finally, teamwork – unity – takes practice. And, sometimes, it is best to get out of the office to improve in-office productivity.

Today, we live in a world where the competition is becoming more and more fierce, and everyone is part of the rat race. There is no dearth of elements in the news that describes people stabbing their friends in the back- metaphorically and often literally- to get ahead in the race, and to eliminate competition. It has of course never been easy to be successful, and today, success does seem like a particularly high branched fruit to reach in the face of all the competition. As a result, we see almost no one standing together. And, consequently, we seem to have forgotten the simple matter of standing united. However, it is extremely important to keep in mind that unity and teamwork are the mantras of a successful life and career. In this article, let us see how unity can help us in every sphere of life.

We will come across adversity in every sphere of our lives, and there is no saying when we shall come face to face with a person who has none but malice in their hearts for us. It is alright to say and believe that we are capable of handling such disturbances on our own, and we may very well be, but if we are united with a friend, the task will be much easier. It is only through the strength of unity that we can fight off an attacker of ourselves. Let us take an instance from the animal world. Even lions hunt in packs; the lion is the leader of a pack of females who engage in the hunting and defend the pride when it is threatened. If the lion had to fly solo, the task of getting food and protecting its existence would be a far more daunting task indeed.

Unity is all important in an organization. If every person in the workplace is not united by the common goal of improving the position and business of the company, it would be very hard for the company to be successful indeed. When everyone strives toward the common goal, they are able to put their mutual discords aside and join hands to achieve that common dream. It is understood and accepted that humans will have differences of opinion, but as long as the goal is a common one, it is far easier to solve such disputes when they arise and instead come to a compromise. This makes the company more efficient and more productive.

Unity is indispensable in any team. It is important for a team to work together in order to be able to complete a task efficiently. Each member of the team must work together toward a common goal in order to be successful. If any member of the team does not comply with the organizational structure, it will weaken the team as a whole, and hence the entire team will fall behind on its task. Every member of the team is assigned a particular task, and each task is an important part of the whole. If one task is not completed efficiently and on time, there will be a squeaky cog in the wheel, and it will not run smoothly.

Increases sportsmanship

In an organized sport such as baseball, volleyball, or soccer, each player must work as a team. If every member of the team is focused only on performing their best and one-upping the other members of the team, they would be busy competing against each other and never be able to perform well as an entire team. While healthy completion is necessary and welcome, it should never turn to professional rivalry within a team when it is supposed to work as a whole. As the common saying goes, there is no I in the team, and a team that performs best is one in which all the members are united toward the achievement of a common goal.

Better for the country

Even politically speaking, teamwork and unity is essential. A country truly goes to the dogs where each political leader is busy earning profits from their position, without bothering about what the other leaders have to say and what the country wants and needs. A country has a successful government only when each political leader is united in their desire to make the country a truly prosperous and healthy nation.

The age old saying goes: ‘United we stand, divided we fall’. Today, more than ever, this saying is relevant and quite positively an edict to be followed. In trying times such as these, it is essential for mankind to stand together as one and fight against the evils that threaten to disintegrate its principles.
