Introduction

The UC Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a research-only degree, carried out under expert supervision and using world-class facilities. At UC you can complete a PhD in over 70 subjects, joining over 1,000 students from more than 60 nations.

A PhD involves extensive, sustained, and original research in your chosen subject, with the results being presented in a thesis that will contribute to intellectual knowledge of the field. It is a mark of intellectual ability, self-discipline, and commitment. A PhD prepares you for a number of careers, including as an academic.

Entry requirements.

Enrolment in a PhD requires completion of a research-focused honours or master’s degree, at First or Second Class (Division I) Honours or Distinction level (or equivalent qualifications).

Applicants with qualifications from outside Aotearoa New Zealand must have been granted admission to the University. Our admissions team, in consultation with the host department, look at your qualifications and transcripts to ensure that you have the background required to complete a PhD. It is possible that you may be required to complete preparatory courses prior to or after admission into a PhD programme.

In exceptional circumstances applicants without the typical academic background, but who can demonstrate the ability to pursue a PhD, may be admitted at the discretion of the Dean of Postgraduate Research.

If English is your additional language, you are also required to meet UC's English language requirements .

One or more courses or research may require vaccination

The government has announced new vaccination requirements for the health and education sectors. At UC, our programmes are strongly connected to our communities of practice. For many of our programmes, you will not be able to complete research or practice-oriented courses if you are not vaccinated. This is due to research/practice taking place in health centres and schools/kura where all employees and volunteers are required to be vaccinated.

For enrolment in the Health Sciences major, you will be required to be vaccinated in line with the  NZ Government regulations , and supply evidence of your vaccination status.

You may begin your PhD on the first day of any month of the year. Study and research for the PhD is regarded as a full-time occupation throughout the calendar year.

The minimum period of enrolment for full-time study is 3 years and the maximum period 4 years. There are provisions to apply for part-time study, in which case the minimum period is 4.5 years, and you should complete your thesis within 6 years.

PhD Study in New Zealand

A PhD is the highest degree awarded at global universities. The study is based on a substantial research project in an area of academic interest, typically up to 100,000 words in length, written as a thesis which must be defended in an oral examination at the end of the program. All PhD students are assigned a supervisor, and the duration of a PhD is typically three years full-time and six years part-time.

Very few research degrees feature taught modules, and as such a, student is expected to take more responsibility for their work and schedule. Universities in New Zealand are known for their academic excellence and state-of-the-art research infrastructure, along with their support for enterprise partnerships.  

PhD Entry Requirements

New Zealand institutions are free to admit anyone to a PhD program, with admission generally conditional on the prospective student having completed an undergraduate degree with at least upper second-class honours, as well as a master's degree. English language ability proof is a must, and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is generally required. There is usually a first-year assessment to remain in study, and the thesis is submitted at the end of the completed program.

Once you have decided on an area of research and have looked into how you will fund your study, there are a number of documents required when submitting your application. They include:

• Academic transcripts
• Academic references
• Personal statement
• Research proposal

A research proposal is required by all students when applying to study for a PhD. The proposal should address the research you wish to undertake, how you will do it, and why it is important. A panel of experts must accept the proposal before your program can begin.

How much does a PhD cost in New Zealand?

Funding and researching a PhD can be expensive. Candidates can cost between $5,000-$20,000 per year, although this is still considerably cheaper than US or UK equivalents. Dedicated scholarships can help support your PhD, and it is rare for a PhD student not to be supported by some form of bursary, grant or scholarship.

You can apply for a doctoral programme anytime during the year. Follow these steps to submit your application.

1 , Check you meet the entry requirements

To be accepted into a PhD or professional doctorate at Massey, you need to meet the academic and English-language entry requirements.

Academic entry requirements

You need to have the following to apply for a doctoral degree.

• An honours or master’s degree, or equivalent qualification, in a relevant subject with a 75 per cent or a B+ average. If you have an international qualification, Admissions with Equivalent Status (AES) will be used to assess your qualification.
• A completed research project, dissertation, or thesis of at least 30 credits or a minimum of 25 per cent of your honours or master’s degree, with a B+ or higher grade.
• Two academic references, including one from your research supervisor for your honours or master’s degree. Referees should not be personal friends or relatives. It’s a good idea to contact your referees before you submit your application and follow up to make sure they’ve received the request.

English language entry requirements

You also need to meet the English language requirements for study at Massey. You need one of the following:

• to be from, or have completed your qualifying degree from, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, or the United States
• an Academic International English Language Test (IELTS) score of at least 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 (Note: The Institute of Education requires an overall score of 6.5, with a minimum of 7 in Reading and Writing and a minimum of 6 in Listening and Speaking)
• an internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) score of at least 90 overall and 20 in writing
• a Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 58 overall and a minimum of 50 in each communicative skill.

All English evidence is valid for 2 years from the date of completion.

For professional doctorates, there may be other requirements such as relevant work experience.

For PhDs in the creative or performing arts, you may need to submit a portfolio of your creative work with your application.

2 , Research your area of interest

Before you apply for a doctoral degree, you need to think about what you want to research. Remember your research will be a big part of your life for the next three to four years – so it’s important to choose something that you’re passionate about and that will hold your interest.

Take these steps to come up with a research topic.

• Think about what kind of doctorate you want to do.
• Choose a topic you’re knowledgeable about and that fits with your long-term career goals.
• Read other theses and research on the topic. You can find theses and research by Massey staff and students at Massey Research Online .

3 , Find a supervisor

After you’ve thought about the topic you want to focus on, you need to find a supervisor. Your supervisor’s research and skills should match your area of interest.

Search for supervisors

When you find someone who you think might be a good fit, it’s a good idea to:

• look at other students they have supervised
• read their published research
• see if they have any current projects listed.

Then, contact them to discuss your ideas. You should email them and set up a meeting. You want to find out if they’re available, interested and willing to supervise you.

To act as a supervisor, a Massey staff member needs to have relevant experience and be engaged in professional development. Massey’s Supervisor Accreditation ensures you will have qualified supervisors for your research.

4 , Get your documents ready

Make sure you have the following documents ready before you apply:

• transcripts for all your tertiary qualifications, including those you haven’t completed
• graduation certificates for all your tertiary qualifications
• your CV, including references to any publications you have
• a portfolio of your creative work if you’re applying for a PhD in the creative or performing arts
• evidence that you meet the English language requirements
• evidence of your citizenship
• the contact details of two academic references who have agreed to act as referees for you. Your admission application will not progress without both referee reports.

5 , Pay the AES fee

If your honours or master’s degree is from a university outside New Zealand, you will need to pay the AES fee. This will be refunded when you enrol in your qualification.

6 , Complete the online application

Once you’ve completed all the steps above, you’re ready to put in your application. Go to the page for the doctoral degree you want to apply for and click ‘Apply now’. Follow the instructions to apply.

After you submit your online application, you will be able to track the progress of your application in your Student Portal.

If you are successful in your application, we will send you an Offer of Place. After you have accepted your Offer of Place, you are ready to enrol. If you are an international student you need to pay your fees and apply for a visa before enrolling.

To enrol, you need to:

• meet any conditions outlined on your Offer of Place
• complete your application for doctoral enrolment.

Once your enrolment is complete, you become a current student and have access to university resources including the library, support services, learning and development opportunities and our doctoral community network.

School of Design Innovation Te Kura Hoahoa

Doctor of Philosophy in Design

A PhD is an advanced research qualification carried out under academic supervision and is the highest degree offered by the Wellington Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation.

The PhD thesis is a major piece of original research that demonstrates the candidate’s ability to carry out independent research and constitutes a significant and original contribution to knowledge or understanding in a field of study as well as intelligence and an aptitude for research, the degree requires considerable dedication and tenacity.

The minimum period of registration before a PhD thesis can be submitted for examination is 36 months full-time (or equivalent).

Faculty of Graduate Research

The Faculty of Graduate Research (FGR) is the best place to start if you are interested in doctoral study at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. Its website will link you to the online application process, provide you with details of available funding, application dates, and answers to questions you may have about what is involved in undertaking a PhD.

Your acceptance will depend on a number of factors, including your previous qualifications and experience, the suitability of your topic for PhD studies and our capacity to supervise you and your topic.

Supervision

Each PhD candidate will have at least two academic supervisors. You are advised to contact prospective supervisors prior to applying. Please be aware that the final allocation of supervisors is made by the School.

Members of the Wellington Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation have a wide variety of research interests that may align with your area of interest for PhD study.

Portfolio requirement

A portfolio of work is required as part of the PhD application process for students wanting to complete design-based research at the Wellington Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation.

A portfolio should showcase work that indicates your skill level, interests and strengths in design or related creative discipline. Up to 10 pieces of work is sufficient. If you are sending work you have completed for an employer, please clearly state what your role in the project was—design, drawing, project management.

• You cannot hold citizenship or permanent residency status in New Zealand or Australia
• You must be from a developing country.

This scholarship offers:

• New Zealand University annual tuition fees and associated student levies up to a total of NZ $10,000 NZD per year 
• An annual living stipend of NZ $40,696 NZD per year (tax free)
• Medical insurance cover up to NZ $700 NZD per year 
• Visa application costs to a maximum of NZ $1,000 NZD
