Rocky Handsome movie review: John Abraham's action does all the talking

At its core, john abraham's rocky handsome is a tale of emotion and action. and it is in the action part that this nishikant kamat-directed film shines..

Listen to Story

John Abraham in a poster of Rocky Handsome

John Abraham (L) and Nishikant Kamat at the Delhi promotions of Rocky Handsome

Diya manages to impress as the girl who dreams to open her own nail paint parlour. But that's about it, really. Nishikant Kamat, in most of his scenes, does a good job of being the bad guy. The scene with Maantu, where Kamat spits blood, deserves a mention for its brilliance. Teddy Maura is over the top. Tuning his psychotic Luke down a few notches would have been a sensible task. Sharad Kelkar shines in his cop act. Shanker Raman's cinematography is a treat for the eyes. Despite the numerous Hindi films shot in Goa in the recent past, Rocky Handsome manages to deliver on screen the underbelly of the state in all its darkness. Inder and Sunny Bawra's music grows on you. Alfazon Ki Tarah, Rehnuma, Rock Tha Party are all hummable, easy-on-the-ears tracks. However, underneath all the stylised action sequences and slick long shots in the rain, Rocky Handsome is not all flawless. The crispness of the story is lost in parts, and it is a bit difficult to keep your attention from swaying through the course of the film. In all, Rocky Handsome is a decent one-time watch for non-fans of Abraham. For a John Abraham fan, the film clicks several boxes. Above all, Rocky Handsome is a sumptuous feast for action-lovers. Watch it if you swear by punches and kicks and special, hitherto-unseen-in-Hindi-films martial arts. Published By: AtMigration Published On: Mar 25, 2016 --- ENDS ---

The Man From Nowhere is a decent action film from Korea, made back in 2010. Rocky Handsome is just a cheap knock off, made in India.

How long can you watch a handsome face with all the expressiveness of a rock? That question will haunt you as you sit through John Abraham's new action thriller, Rocky Handsome.

Rocky Handsome has had to trim back the ultraviolence that marks South Korean crime dramas but at least the movie comes to life when the death count is ticking. It's a pity that the survivors are not as interesting as the corpses.

Rocky Handsome has a lazy script but for a brawny action film that can be excused. What's unforgivable is action sequences being diluted of their potential to make way for ill-timed drama.

Rocky Handsome movie review: Pulsating action and a treat for only John Abraham fans

rocky handsome movie review john abraham

Director: Nishikant Kamat

Cast: John Abraham, Sharad Kelkar, Nishikant, Shruti Haasan

An official remake of The Man From No Where, Nishikant Kamat has presented John Abraham in a very different manner. From the raw and rusty locations to the fight sequences, Rocky Handsome is a well-detailed film. In a violence-fuelled action fest, John Abraham has effortlessly managed to pull off sequences, which are a mix of various art forms. He flawlessly slips into the shoes of his character, Kabir Ahlawat.

However, despite good performances from the leading cast, the film fails to hold the viewers' interest. The pace in which the story moves ahead and the combination of many situations fail to leave an impact. In fact, cinematographer Shankar Raman has shot the film so well that you are always telling yourself, ‘okay wait the film will get better’. Then there is the background music, which again hits on the right note. The tracks really stand out in scenes bringing the boring screenplay of Ritesh Shah to life.

Exploring the world of drug trafficking, Nishikant sets the story in Goa with the villains running the show successfully. Kevin (Nishikant) and Luke Ferreira (Teddy Maurya) are struggling to overpower a local don Maanto. This one scene, where Maanto continuously slaps Kevin, remarkably stands out. But there were only few of them that could hold the film in entirety.

The scenes on how kids are being used as soft targets to supply drugs are certainly an eye-opener. But overall, the film doesn’t emotionally connect despite having the right intention to show an emotional journey of Nayomi (Diya Chalwad). The kid also has stood to her part really well. Sharad Kelkar as a cop left his mark with the screen time that he was given.

Shruti Haasan has a special appearance in the film but looks like it was only during the editing of the film that the makers realized that her role has nothing to offer.

Overall the film will appeal to those who love to see action and want to see John doing it. And yes, he is more bulky this time around.

Rocky Handsome review: Good action scenes can’t save a weak story

John abraham’s rocky handsome is a very average film with some finely executed action sequences on display. but, make no mistake: don’t expect anything more from this film..

Rocky Handsome

John Abraham plays a mystery man Kabir Ahlawat in Rocky Handsome. (YouTube)

Cast: John Abraham, Nishikant Kamat, Diya Chalwad, Nathalia Kaur, Sharad Kelkar, Teddy Maurya, Shruti Haasan

Director: Nishikant Kamat

Rating: 2/5

Goa is the new north India for the Hindi film industry. Filmmakers know the formula: Sinister-looking foreigners, local gangsters wearing floral shirts, drug trafficking and bars with Russian boards. All they need to throw in is one or two peppy dance numbers and slow motion action sequences. And yes, that old Goa church is mandatory. Mix the ingredients according to your choice and you’re ready with another morally upright, vengeful hero ready to take on the world. The director’s job gets even more defined if he is a fan of Korean films or secretly loves Jason Bourne.

Read: Action in Rocky Handsome is world-class, says John Abraham

Kabir Ahlawat (John Abraham) likes body-hugging suits and runs a Pawn shop in Goa. Anna (a super sultry Nathalia Kaur) and her daughter Nayomi (Diya Chalwad) are his neighbours, but drugs are ruining their lives. Brothers Kevin (Nishikant Kamat) and Luke Ferreira (Teddy Maurya) are the force behind this racket, and they won’t let go of their empire at any cost. As expected, the little child gets trapped in the middle of this chaos and all hell breaks loose.

Watch: John Abraham’s Rocky Handsome fails to impress

Is it just me or you also are reminded of Leon The Professional (1994)? You’re still getting settled in your seat while watching lovey-dovey wife Rukshida (Shruti Haasan) pouting with Kabir in Seychelles, and it begins abruptly. The moment Kabir lands on a car’s bonnet like a true Batman fan, you know what you are up to.

Rocky Handsome is loosely based on Korean film The Man From Nowhere. (YouTube)

Here’s a child who loves nail art, a club dancer mother and a man with no apparent history. Basically, a fast and furious guy has stood up to the dreaded traffickers for reasons extremely personal, but can a predictable, video game-inspired actioner hold your attention for 130-minutes? Looks like a daunting task after the first 30 minutes.

There are moments when you see director Kamat bringing out a different side of the gangsters. In one of the most captivating scenes of Rocky Handsome, we see local don Maanto sadistically slapping Kevin, and the latter not flinching a bit. He spits blood only after everybody leaves the scene and the ordeal is over. The bad guy’s grit is visible. But then, it all goes in vein when too much focus gets attached to choreographing a Kill Bil-style action sequence with one person against the whole army. And, you know how weird it looks when in the middle of a showdown everybody throws their weapon away and resorts to a fistfight. They don’t forget to tear apart their own shirts. In short, masala takes over the centre-stage.

Watch: John Abraham, Shruti Haasan in Rocky Handsome trailer

Some slow motion long shots are worth watching, especially those taken in the rain. But how can these supplement for the lack of a coherent theme?

Abraham’s Kabir is a silent and strong guy who cannot paddle a rehashed film forward just on his own. Madras Café and Force gave him the chance to explore a similar territory but those roles were way more nuanced. Here, too many players make his stroll bumpy. Luke, Maantu and other over-the-top gangsters simply stop you from taking the proceedings seriously. Goa isn’t Mexico.

Nishikant Kamat had earlier directed Mumbai Meri Jaan, Force and Drishyam. (YouTube)

Read: John won’t watch Batman v Superman, prefers Bale over Affleck

A great affection for drama and theatrics dilutes the most interesting parts of the film: The inside view of the drugs business in Goa. Just when you start noticing the detailed research, it again goes back to illogical bloodshed and miming, over hyped assassins.

Shanker Raman’s breathtaking cinematography or Sharad Kelkar’s supporting hands are not expected to rescue an average film. There is a limit to putting the guns and goons to task, no? And just how much of Abraham’s murderous rage can you tolerate? But who is to blame for the weak storyline? Abraham himself is the producer of the film.

Rocky Handsome may seem a jumbled up version of John Abraham to some, and this is the third time he is playing Kabir. Too much of self-introspection and alter ego, eh?

John Abraham … err … Rocky Handsome is a very average film with some finely executed action sequences on display. But, make no mistake: Don’t expect anything more from this film.

Film review: ‘Rocky Handsome’ is an amateurish remake of a South Korean hit

‘the man from nowhere’ gets the bollywood treatment ‒ to its peril..

Film review: ‘Rocky Handsome’ is an amateurish remake of a South Korean hit

Rocky Handsome proves that it is possible to pay good money for an official remake of a South Korean hit rather than pilfer the plot, as Bollywood has done in the past, and still botch it up.

Nishikant Kamat’s movie is a remake of The Man From Nowhere (2010), in which a laconic loner with floppy hair and boyish features turns out to be a deadly special forces soldier who retired after the death of his pregnant wife. Plagued by her memory, the former soldier’s only friend in the world is a precocious young girl next door whose mother is a drug addict and a stripper. The mother sets events in motion when she steals a stash of drugs from a club and tries to sell it in the open market. As the drug dealers come to claim their produce, they get a true measure of the ruthlessness of the girl’s tender-skinned neighbour, and when they kidnap the girl to traffic her organs, they invite a fate worse than death.

John Abraham is co-producer and lead who plays the brooder from across the landing who dotes on Naomi (Diya Chalwad), and on the surface of it, he seems apt for the role. His combination of a severely limited acting range and striking looks have been successfully exploited in exactly one movie: Anurag Kashyap’s No Smoking (2007). Abraham has never been convincing as a leading man who can express himself with anything more than his fists. Rocky Handsome should have been a shoo-in for Abraham, since he is required to do little more than look pensive and fight at will, but the movie is too ineptly adapted (by Ritesh Shah) and directed to count as a comeback for Abraham as a leading man.

Director Kamat is something of a remake specialist. Every one of his films except the Marathi movie Lai Bhaari (2014) is an unofficial or official adaptation of somebody else’s vision. Force (2011) and Drishyam (2015) were remakes that missed the fundamental essence of the original films. Rocky Handsome suffers the same fate. The complicated plot is sluggishly narrated and tackily rendered, the humour forced, the Goa setting convenient and lazy, and the villains, including Kamat and Teddy Maurya as sadistic brothers named Kevin and Luke, too buffoonish to be menacing. The overall slickness of the original and the sharply edited and beautifully lensed blood-letting are completely missing in the flat Hindi translation. Besides, no movie that sells itself as a remorseless action thriller can allow Rahat Fateh Ali Khan to rip out his vocal cords in the background.

The movie’s highlights are three action sequences that have been faithfully replicated from the original. Hamstrung by local censorship laws, Rocky Handsome has had to trim back the ultraviolence that marks South Korean crime dramas¸ but at least the movie comes to life when the death count is ticking. It’s a pity that the survivors are not as interesting as the corpses.

Rocky Handsome - Preview

Rocky Handsome 's trailer opens with a romantic track and it plays long enough for you to wonder if Rocky Handsome is only about John Abraham being handsome. As the track switches, you see the romance fade away into gloom and you wonder if it is yet another revenge saga. And then, everything you have seen so far seems to have no bearing to what you are currently watching.

Thankfully, this last bit is the longest and most interesting part of the trailer and makes me look forward to the film. The action to go along with it is stylish, gruesome and leaves a mark. Add to that, the name of a director who has a decent record with thrillers and you wish to forget the apprehension that the first half of the trailer brought. Maybe it was just a tool to get the viewer watching. But then again, what does it say about the film, if they have to use tools for engagement tactics, play games with the audience?

Music Reviews : Bollywood Hungama – "2.5/5" glamsham – "3/5" Milliblog - "Sunny and Inder definitely show promise!" rediff - "2/5"

- meeta, a part of the audience

Even if it mostly involved thorough research and referencing to put together a bunch of choreographed action sequences, it is a job well done. It is brutal, it is gruesome and it is well-edited. That is about the only good thing you can say about Rocky Handsome . Other than it attempts a sensitive track without engaging emotionally even for a bit; and tries its hand at thrilling with little to surprise you.

The big reveal is no reveal because you are expecting it and because it is unfolded rather mechanically. The issues addressed are way too many from drug-trafficking to human-trafficking to organ-trafficking. If the idea was to just display the brutality of the said “businesses”, it came through alright. However, none of it is not new. Except for the numbers maybe. It was cute the way the writers introduced the statistics involved in the movie instead of having them run as end credits.

Yes, this is trying to grasp any visible straw. The performances are wooden, this despite cute Baby Diya Chalwad . John Abraham broods and manages a smile here or there. The villains instill fear but it is more because of the way in which they operate rather than their performances. Those seem more comic than villainous. Shruti Haasan 's special appearance seems to exist only to add some oomph to a story that didn't have it. It is another matter that the story didn't need it either.

This is where the film suffers further. Use of slow-motion under the garb of “stylization” is bad enough, it is used rather randomly too. Same goes for the background music. It takes special effort to ignore the music so that you can somehow stay connected to the story and what's on the screen.

The story itself is all over the place in terms of the issues it wishes to take on. The cartels have a familiar hierarchy and the changes within are predictable too. The caricatures trotting around as menacing villains because of their quirks get annoying really soon.

Rocky Handsome came out as rather poorly written than anything else. Maybe, we could have excused the lapses in execution and narrative had it been for a gripping story or even if it had somewhat interesting characters. Pure action it wanted to show you and that it does well.

  • Movie Name: Rocky Handsome Review: A ripped John Abraham and slick action in a soulless film
  • Critics Rating: 1.5 / 5
  • Release Date: March 25, 2016
  • Director: Nishikant Kamat
  • Genre: Action -Thriller

Action, boredom and repetition – this sums up the John Abraham-starrer directed by Nishikant Kamat, who also features as an actor in the film. A remake of the 2010 South Korean thriller - The Man from Nowhere, Rocky Handsome delivers nothing that adds value to the retelling.

It is the story of Kabir Ahlawat (John Abraham), who runs a pawn shop in Goa and a seven-year-old girl Nayomi (Divya Chalwad) living in his neighbourhood. The two share a special bond and find solace in each other’s company, owing to their respective unbalanced lives.

Nayomi is an ignored child whose mother Anna (Nathalia Kaur) is a bar dancer/sex-worker and a drug addict. On the other hand, John Abraham has a troubled past, a predictable one, which you should better discover while watching the flick.

Action kicks off when Anna and Nayomi are kidnapped by the drug mafia over a drug theft. John Abraham embarks on a murderous rampage and butchers everyone who comes in the way. He has two sides Rocky (code name), and Handsome (which everyone calls him), which you get to know in the interval.

The crime story is filmed in Goa which is portrayed as being infested with drug dealers and ruthless gangsters, child traffickers and not the salubrious land of fun and froth that Bollywood shows. The plot has many colourful baddies – drug mafia Maantu, his aides - two brothers Kevin Pereira (Nishikant Kamat) – and Luke Ferreira (Teddy Maurya) – one with a ponytail, who also run an organ trafficking racket.

Every time the baddies and John meet on screen, there is a blast and an overdose of relentless bloodshed. Action does the talking for Abraham, who has merely recited dialogues during the entire course.

Amid the nerve chilling action and dark scenes, child artist Diya is the sunshine in disguise. She brightens the mood every time she appears on screen. But unfortunately, the weak narration, predictable twists and turns and action driving the movie, the plot never really connects to you.

Director Nishikant Kamat as Kevin has done a decent job as the main villain of the movie. The scene where he doesn’t blink an eye while repeatedly punched by Maantu is worth the applause. Though, in course of polishing his acting skills, the movie lost its direction.

Rest of the cast is average. Shurti Haasan’s work was just to change 10 dresses in a song and romance John for two minutes. Nora Fatehi fills in for the skin show and repetitive moves in the only dance number – Rock The Party. Nathalia Kaur is sizzling as a bar dancer. Teddy Maurya overdoes the acting part and ends up looking a joker than anything else. Sharad Kelkar, as Mumbai ATC cop, impresses in crucial supporting role. Suhasini Mulay has just two scenes and her character of ‘child lifter’ doesn’t have any depth.

Cinematographer Shanker Raman has done a wonderful job in filming all the merciless and breathtaking action sequences, which bring you to the edge of your seats. There are two-three rain sequences in the movie which have looked classy. Editing by Aarif Shaikh is also done expertly.

Music is one of the positive points of the movie. Situational songs and good lyrics make it soothing for your ears amid too much of Bang Boom.

This tale of a surly protagonist who takes on an entire army of gangsters to rescue a kidnapped seven-year-old girl is over-dependent on graphic violence for effect. The film is literally more body than soul. Its focus is entirely on Abraham’s chiseled muscular frame.

Rock Handsome, with nothing new to offer, is strictly for the John Abraham fans who will enjoy his rock solid body and never-seen-before action. There is less or no scope for people looking for anything else. Action is the soul of the movie but the movie has no soul.

The movie runs for just 126 minutes but seems stretched and you wait for it to end soon. Thankfully, it does.

Movie Review: Rocky Handsome

By rachit gupta | march 23, 2016, 20:02 ist.

Movie Review: Rocky Handsome

The Man From Nowhere is a decent action film from Korea, made back in 2010. Rocky Handsome is just a cheap knock off, made in India. It's literally the same film, complete with almost the same screenplay sequences, shot again in Indian locations. The little liberties taken at adapting this film to its current setting are just stupid. The one decent thing about Rocky Handsome is its hand-to-hand combat sequences. They're not as good as the original, but in terms of action quality they are leagues ahead of the usual cable-inspired stunts you get in Hindi films. Watching this film can be a test in your ability to suspend disbelief. Even when you are a John Abraham fan. You can watch him kick ass like a Hollywood hero, but you'll have pay a collateral of dealing with a mind numbing film.

Rocky Handsome is a scene to scene rework of its Korean inspiration. By logic, that should translate into a decent story. But the reason it does not, is bad dialogue. Some of the lines on offer in Rocky Handsome are so clunky and random, you'd think Manoj Kumar's Clerk or Mithun Chakraborty's Gunda were classics. Sadly, even the so-bad-it's-good moniker doesn't quite apply to Rocky Handsome. The premise deals with a reclusive fellow named Kabir (John Abraham) and his fight with gangsters and organ gangs and drug trafficking gangs, because of a young girl named Naomi. Naomi's mother gets embroiled in the drug trade and the mafia kidnap the mother and daughter to get back stuff that was stolen from them. Kabir gets involved because Naomi is his only friend. Also he has massive guilt about not being nice to her when it mattered. There are a few unexpected twists and turns that are supposed to shock you. You're being taken into a dark world where human bodies, organs and life itself is just a product. Kidnapped children are tools of ease for gangsters. But the treatment for such a dark subject is grossly inconsistent. Nishikant Kamat and his writing team try to sneak in humour and pun, when it's not needed, at all. That's something the original film did well. It kept a grim tone. It made things serious to a point where character intensity and emotions became an uneasy experience. But there's no such feeling of gloom in Rocky Handsome because it tries to be too cool, too gritty, too smart all at the same time.

Part of the blame goes to performances that should've been dialled down, but are tuned up instead. The bad guys are behaving like psychos trying to convince you that they're evil. Cops are behaving like men on testosterone. The entire acting effort in Rocky Handsome seems like a desperate effort to be theatrical and shocking. The only person who passes muster is John Abraham, playing the stone cold hero devoid of expressions. And to an extent, Sharad Kelkar, who refrains from being a tough cop and stands out from the crowd.

Style and stunts play a big role in action movies. But you can't discount other aspects of filmmaking just to make an action film that looks sexy. The biggest mistake Rocky Handsome makes is to give it's lead character an emotional and patriotic back story. It just turns him into another caricature and it never quite justifies his appetite for killing. John Abraham's training in martial arts is evident in the scenes featuring him in hand-to-hand combat. There the effort is 100 per cent. But rest of the way, this is one rocky film trying a little too hard to be handsome.

'Rocky Handsome' review round-up: What critics have to say about John Abraham-starrer

The john-starrer will be released in theatres march 25..

Rocky Handsome first look

Nishikant Kamat's action thriller "Rocky Handsome" has received mixed response from critics. The film, which will be released in theatres March 25, features John Abraham in the lead role and Shruti Haasan, Nishikant Kamat and Sharad Kelkar as supporting characters.

"Rocky Handsome" is based on South Korean film "The Man from Nowhere" starring Won Bin. The storyline revolves around Kabir Ahlawat (John) and an eight-year-old girl with whom he shares a special bond. The South Korean film had opened to good reviews when released in 2010, but "Rocky Handsome" has failed to impress Bollywood critics.

Read on to find what critics have said about "Rocky Handsome."

Bollywood Hungama 's review read: "ROCKY HANDSOME is for people who like action films. Despite the film having a simple plot, it has been garnished with engrossing drama and action stunningly. One can find the right mix of tension, action, emotion under one roof. A well-made action thriller!"

Rachit Gupta of Filmfare said: "The biggest mistake Rocky Handsome makes is to give it's lead character an emotional and patriotic back story. It just turns him into another caricature and it never quite justifies his appetite for killing."

Abhijit Badgujar of Koimoi.com  said: "Only if you love action flicks but if you want the movie to interest you to the core, please avoid it."

Rahul Desai of Catch News  said: "A depressingly faithful adaptation of the Korean hit 'The Man From Nowhere,' Rocky Handsome revolves around a sullen, sunken John Wick wannabe who roams around Goa (Ramoji FilmCity) like he can't decide whether he is Undertaker or Batman."

Subhash K Jha  in his review said: "Nishikant Kamat maintains an almost-demented momentum till the end of the proceedings. The item songs inter-cutting into the drug dealings seem quaintly archaic in a film that captivates us with its Korean brand of stunts."

IANS review read: "'Rocky Handsome' is bound to appeal only to those fond of action films."

Rohit Vats of Hindustan Times  said: "John Abraham ... err ... Rocky Handsome is a very average film with some finely executed action sequences on display."

Khalid Mohamed of Spotboye said: "Evidently, Rocky Handsome was calculated as an ode to the jism and josh of John Handsome. Alas, even a perfect body needs soul."

Kunal Guha of Mumbai Mirror said: "Given the film's single-minded obsession with crime and given the setting, it could've well been titled Madgaon Vice. But since the lead here is also the producer, we'll let this pass."

Shubha Shetty-Saha of Mid-Day  said: "The only good part is its action sequences, which might have been directly borrowed from the original Korean film."

John Abraham’s movie Rocky Handsome, which released on Friday (March 25), has already collected Rs 1.84 cr thanks to its previews held a day before it release. The movie, which has been receiving mixed response from all over, seems to be doing well at the box office.

Directed by Nishikant Kamat, the film features Shruti Haasan opposite John. The duo have earlier been seen together in Welcome Back. Also Nishikant himself has played an antagonist in this movie. Eight-year-old Diya Chalwad is also in a pivotal role.

The film, which picked up pace even before the release, has definitely something good waiting for it over the weekend. During the promotions of the film John Abraham had said that women are going to enjoy the film as its action has its own rhythm.

Indian Express critic Shubhra Gupta gave one star to the movie and wrote, “A drug-mafia infested Goa plus menacing mobsters plus a little girl who goes missing plus a muscled man on a mission is equal to ‘Rocky Handsome’. What all of it basically comes down to is this: a sculpted John Abraham donning a black singlet–pajamas–combat cap, walking slo-mo down corridors, beating the c—p out of sundry bad guys. Or slashing holes into ‘em. Same difference. That is the sole purpose of this film."

The storyline of the new release – “Rocky Handsome” starring John Abraham  revolves around Kabir Ahlawat (John) and an eight-year-old girl with whom he shares a special bond. But it has failed to impress Bollywood critics.

Rachit Gupta of Filmfare said: “The biggest mistake Rocky Handsome makes is to give its lead character an emotional and patriotic back story. It just turns him into another caricature and it never quite justifies his appetite for killing.”

Abhijit Badgujar of Koimoi.com said: “Only if you love action flicks but if you want the movie to interest you to the core , please avoid it.”

Rahul Desai of Catch News said: “A depressingly faithful adaptation of the Korean hit ‘The Man From Nowhere,’ Rocky Handsome revolves around a sullen , sunken John Wick wannabe who roams around Goa (Ramoji FilmCity) like he can’t decide whether he is Undertaker or Batman.”

Subhash K Jha in his review said: “Nishikant Kamat maintains an almost-  momentum till the end of the proceedings. The item songs inter-cutting into the drug dealings seem quaintly archaic in a film that captivates us with its Korean brand of stunts.”

Rohit Vats of Hindustan Times said: “John Abraham … err … Rocky Handsome is a very average film with some finely executed action sequences on display.”

Your tolerance for the new Peter Farrelly comedy “ Ricky Stanicky ” may come down to whether or not you think the idea of accidentally miming a certain sex act is funny. The concept is of little consequence to the plot. It’s something that a few of the leads notice that the buttoned-up leader of a financial company (William H. Macy) does when he makes speeches. They decide that that’s why he’s unable to close a deal, giving it a name that is repeated so many times it could be a new drinking game. The movie thinks this is just comedy gold. You might too.

“Ricky Stanicky” (it is meant to rhyme) is a name chosen in haste by three pre-teen boys who have just accidentally lit a house on fire. They didn’t mean to commit arson, they simply wanted to burn some dog poop on the doorstep of a house that didn’t give out any Halloween candy. When the fire gets out of control, they leave behind a jacket with a fake name inscribed in it: Ricky Stanicky. He becomes their imaginary fourth friend and forever fall guy even into adulthood (in which they’re played by Zac Efron , Andrew Santino and Jermaine Fowler). But their house of alibis is in danger of crumbling when suspicious partners and one nagging mother-in-law demand that the elusive Ricky materialize. So, the guys decide to hire a washed up Atlantic City celebrity impressionist who goes by “Rock Hard” Rod (John Cena) to play Ricky for a day.

This idea did not originate with Farrelly, who, of course, with his brother defined a moment in broad 1990s comedy with movies like “Dumb & Dumber,” “Kingpin” and “There’s Something About Mary.” The sensibility was always more than a bit juvenile — but done so gleefully and with such unabashed commitment that it was hard not to just laugh along with the antics. Some of their comedies have aged poorly, a fate that is not unique to them, but again, they were of a moment that long ago passed (they were like the younger, sweeter sibling of the frat guy mentality of the early aughts).

And unfortunately, “Ricky Stanicky” feels like one of those lesser 2000 comedies that wanted so badly to be “There’s Something About Mary.” It makes a certain amount of sense when you consider that the script has been circling Hollywood for about 15 years . At one point, James Franco was attached to the title role. A few years later, it was going to be Jim Carrey. This development journey is one of the reasons why there are six credited screenwriters on the version that finally got made (Jeff Bushell and Brian Jarvis & James Lee Freeman & Peter Farrelly & Pete Jones & Mike Cerrone). It’s impossible to tell where the (I assume) good ended and the bad started to creep in, but three ampersands are rarely a good sign in film credits.

It has stamps of a Farrelly romp – a bit with a dog and a duck, a little accidental drugging, a comedic circumcision and an album’s worth of pop songs reworked to be about masturbation — but little of the charm. Is this, perhaps, a piece of comedy that should have been made when it was written? Was it doomed to be revived for 2024 audiences?

One of the problems is that it is filmed with all the artfulness of a yogurt commercial. Everything looks like a set. Everyone looks like an actor. The women are all surface. Nothing seems remotely real, ever, not even the blindingly bright lighting.

The one bright spot is Cena , who is quite good. Like his character, who goes above and beyond to adeptly play Ricky Stanicky, Cena really and truly commits and brings a kind of unexpected depth and pathos to Rock Hard Rod. He’s flexed his comedy muscles before and should again, soon. Is it enough to save the movie? Not for me.

“Ricky Stanicky,” an MGM/Amazon Studios release streaming on Prime Video Thursday, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for “language throughout, some drug content and sexual material.” Running time: 112 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.
