How to Get Your Family to Do Chores

Getting your family to do chores can be a challenge, but it’s an important step in teaching responsibility and teamwork. Here are some tips to get your family to do chores:

By making chores a positive and enjoyable experience, and setting clear expectations and consistent routines, you can encourage your family to take an active role in household tasks and develop a sense of responsibility and teamwork.

How to make a chore chart for the whole family

You might decide on chores that everyone has to do and additional optional chores for kids to earn money. Chores for money could be those beyond what you would expect your child to do and chores that you might otherwise have paid someone to do. Here are some chores to do around the house for money: mow the lawn, clean the car, etc.

If you decide to use this system you can use two chore charts: one for the family chores and one for chores for money (see the money chore chart below).

How to decide on the family chore list

It is important to take into account both the chores that your child can do and the time they have. For example, for a teenager allowance chart, your teenagers might be capable of doing pretty much any chore but depending on their school schedule and the time of the year they might not have too much time. For a young kid’s allowance chart, the situation is very different. The children are not capable of doing as many chores but they probably have more time on their hands. Select any allowance chore chart template below.

Here are some tips on how to decide on the family chore list:

By involving everyone in the process and creating a fair and manageable chore list, you can help build a sense of teamwork and responsibility in your family.

If you are into chore rotation you can fill out a blank chore chart with a chore list and change the names each week.

Allowance chore chart for kids

A kids allowance chart can be used when you give an allowance for chores. There are three ways to do this:

Which method should you choose? It’s a matter of personal preference and parenting style. All approaches can be effective and ultimately, it depends on what works best for each individual family.

Printable Money Chore Chart for Kids

This is a chore chart with prices for kids who want to do chores to do for money. A chore chart with money value for each optional chore gives your kids the opportunity to see how they can earn extra money when they want to save up to buy something. Each time a child completes a chore he will mark the chore payment chart. At the end of the week or month, you will pay each child however much they have earned according to the chore price list.

This is a printable chore chart with money earned for some chores. Add the chore list with allowance in the left column. Add the amount that you will pay for each chore for each child.

Giving your child an allowance for age-appropriate chores

As your child gets older, they will probably want to have a bit of their own spending money. And, while an allowance is one way to give them money of their own, there are both pros and cons to giving your child an allowance for age-appropriate chores. Here are a few things to consider before you decide.

Should you pay your child for chores?

It’s a matter of personal preference and parenting style. Some parents believe that paying children for chores teaches the value of money and work, while others believe that chores are part of household responsibilities and should be completed without compensation. Ultimately, it depends on what works best for each individual family. I personally think that kids should not be paid for doing their basic chores. However, I do think that they should have the option to do extra chores for money because of the benefits it provides (see below).

By combining both free and paid chores, you can help children develop a sense of responsibility and financial literacy, while also making household tasks more manageable and efficient.

Why you shouldn’t pay your child for chores

Household chores like making your bed, doing laundry, and helping to prepare meals should be done because you’re part of the family. If you’re wearing clothes and eating food, there is no reason that your child shouldn’t be expected to help for free.

As part of the family, it’s important that your child learns that helping out is expected. And, paying them to do what’s expected can help raise an entitled child who feels they need to be given things they should simply be doing for free.

Paying your child an allowance for every chore makes them think that all work should be paid. Instead, teach them that responsibilities aren’t always paid for.

Benefits of paying for chores

There are several ways kids can benefit from doing chores for money:

Financial literacy : By earning money through chores, children learn about the value of money and can start to understand the basics of budgeting, saving, and spending. Giving your child money to spend can teach them financial responsibility. Since it’s unlikely they will be able to earn money from a job at 12, giving them chores to do is a simple way to teach them to manage money.

Responsibility : Assigning and completing chores helps children develop a sense of responsibility and ownership for their own actions.

Work Ethic : Doing chores for money can instill a strong work ethic and the idea that effort is rewarded.

Independence : Allowing children to earn money through chores can give them a sense of independence and self-sufficiency.

Preparing for the future : Preparing children for financial responsibilities in adulthood can set them up for success later in life.

Learning the importance of giving : When kids earn their own money, it’s a wonderful opportunity to include lessons on giving and helping those that are less fortunate than they are. You could suggest they donate some of the money. This can be to any charity, a homeless shelter, or the local Humane Society. It will help them to learn to give back.

Why are these chore charts for girls?

These charts have characters that girls typically like. There is no other difference between a chore chart for girls and boys.

What are “girls chores”?

There are some chores that are traditional female chores but I do not think that this is something that we should necessarily pass down to our kids. If my daughter wanted to mow the lawn then I would encourage it. I would like her to know that she can do anything she wants to.

I think that we should expose our kids to all of the chores and let them choose the chores that they are interested in doing (from the chore list that has to be done – otherwise certain chores would never be chosen). If we use a rotation system for chores then kids get to try different things and learn how to perform different chores. This will also help them later on in life. There is absolutely no reason that a girl can’t take out the garbage and a boy can’t set the table.

Is it a girl’s / woman’s responsibility to clean the home?

I personally think that it is a chore that should be shared by both the woman and man. If one partner has more time on her/his hands then he/she should do more but it isn’t related to gender.

I always get mad when a friend tells me how much her husband “helps her” at home. He isn’t helping her. He is doing his share. It’s not her responsibility just because she is a women. It is a joint responsibility that should be divided up fairly. Chores should be divided up fairly (not necessarily equally) between all family members. Some family members work more than others, have medical conditions, other obligations (this did not include their social life), etc. These should be taken into account. Gender is not related.

We often refer to chores as being something we expect our kids to do but if there are family members who are not doing enough chores you might want to try to refer to them as family chores. We offer family chore charts to keep track of each family member’s chores.

In many homes chores are divided up and all family members help out. Chores are done in less time and family members have more time to spend as a family (in a nice clean home).

Sticker Chore Chart | Free Printable

a young girl who is learning to use sticker chore charts to manage her tasks

As parents, we want our kids to understand responsibility and become more independent. One way to achieve this is by introducing chore charts. Chore charts are visual aids that help kids track and accomplish their tasks. Specifically, using sticker chore charts can be a fun way to motivate your kids to complete their chores on their own. Download our free printable sticker chore charts below!

Sticker chore charts are a great way to visually track your child’s progress. You can find these charts in stores or even create your own at home. The charts typically have a list of chores or tasks that kids need to complete. As your child completes each one, they can add a sticker to the chore chart and mark their progress. The visual feedback of seeing their progress in a tangible way is a great motivator for kids.

But why is it important to have kids learn chores at a young age? For starters, it helps them develop a sense of responsibility. Completing tasks such as cleaning their room, taking out the trash, or feeding the family pet shows them that they are capable of contributing to the household. Learning how to complete these chores from a younger age sets them up for success in the future. When they become adults, they will have the skills and knowledge to manage a household on their own. Download your sticker chore charts below!

Benefits of Using Sticker Chore Charts

Adding structure to a child’s routine can also be incredibly beneficial. Structure helps create consistency and gives kids a sense of security. When they know what you expect of them, they are less likely to feel overwhelmed or anxious. Sticker chore charts provide a clear outline of what kids need to do. Which can help reduce stress for both parents and kids.

Using sticker charts to track chores is a great way to make the process more fun and engaging for kids. They can choose their own stickers and customize their chart to make it their own. You could even create a reward system where they earn something special for completing all their tasks for a week or a month.

Introducing chore charts, especially sticker chore charts, is a great way to teach kids responsibility, add structure to their routines and make the process more fun and engaging. So give it a try! It may surprise you how much your child enjoys the process and how much it benefits them in the long run. And who knows, you may even find yourself getting in on the fun by adding your own stickers to your own chart.

Toddler Chore Charts

Printable-Toddler-Chore-Charts-Feature-Image

As adults, we may find household chores to be boring, unexciting, laborious tasks. But if you have a toddler in your home, you will have noticed that they love to mimick our actions and be “big helpers” whenever they can! Believe it or not, toddlers love to have some responsibility! While they still need help and a lot of guidance to start, they really enjoy the feeling of contributing in a way that will make mom and dad proud. Toddlers are more than happy to grab the broom and attempt to sweep the kitchen, or to climb up to the kitchen sink and “wash” dishes in the water with a little bit of soap. We’ve even caught our toddlers with a kitchen towel “wiping down” the seats of the chairs without being asked!

The older children get the more responsibility they can handle and the better able they are to accomplish the chore on their own. Giving children age-appropriate chores is a wonderful way to allow them to learn and grow and become a contributing member of the family.

Below, we have plenty of toddler chore charts that are perfect for toddlers between the ages of 2-5. Just like our morning routine charts and bedtime routine charts , these toddler chore charts have a lot of different options from checking things off a list, moving cards from the “to-do” side to the “done” side, and even placing the picture of the completed chore on top of the chore to be done. The hardest thing you’ll have to do is decide which one you want to try first! After you’ve decided, click on the image, download the file to your computer, and print!
