Free Essay – How I Spent my Mid-Term Holiday

What i did during my mid-term break.

The midterm break is a great time to relax from the hectic academic schedule and do something that will help you feel refreshed mentally and physically.

For days, I had been anticipating this break as an opportunity to reconnect with loved ones while also engaging in some restorative pursuits. I went home for the first few days of the vacation to be with my loved ones. We took day trips to some of our favorite spots in the city. We hiked to a neighboring hill for a bird’s-eye view of the metropolis. My mood was elevated, and I had a sense of renewal, when I spent time with my loved ones. I had hoped to use this time to hone my culinary chops while relaxing and rejuvenating.

I experimented with different recipes with the aid of my mum, who is a fantastic cook. I tried my hand at a wide variety of cuisines, from Italian pasta to Chinese dumplings, all in the name of perfecting my culinary skills. By the conclusion of the vacation, I felt confident enough to add many new dishes to my repertoire of expertise. I also intended to read some backlog I’d accumulated.

Unfortunately, my busy academic schedule leaves me little opportunity to indulge in my passion for reading books for pleasure. During the break between semesters, I caught up on some of my favorite novels and found some new authors to love. When I read, I could forget about my problems and focus entirely on the plot and characters. Over the break, I also made time for regular workouts.

I joined up for several online fitness courses and tried out some new exercise routines. Not only did it keep me physically active, but it also helped me relax and feel better about myself. Last but not least,

I indulged my artistic side. I wish I had more time to devote to my artistic pursuits, since I truly enjoy doing so. In my free time, I did a lot of drawing and painting. I even took an online course to improve my skills as an artist and apply what I’ve learnt in the future.

In summary, I was quite relieved to get a few weeks off in the middle of the semester. I made the most of my vacation by spending time with loved ones, exploring new culinary possibilities, and engaging in my favorite pastimes. Now that the break is over, I’m raring to get back to school with all of my usual vigor and excitement.

Mid -Term Break Essay

The poem ‘Mid-Term Break’ by Seamus Heaney is a first person ballad concerning the death of a boy’s 4-year-old brother while he was away at boarding school, and the individual reactions of each of his family members towards the tragedy. Poet Seamus Heaney did well at taking the extremely heavy subject of a child’s death, and producing a substantially lighter poem that still resonated the right emotions for the theme of the poem. In my opinion, ‘Mid-Term Break’ can be broken up into three different sections.

The first of these sections includes Stanza 1, where the boy is still at school. The first section of the poem describes the main character waiting in the sick bay for someone to drive him home, which tells the reader that something bad has happened before the poem has begun, because the main character is being sent home because of some kind of misfortune or tragedy. The second section of ‘Mid-Term Break’ is the largest, and lasts from stanza two to stanza five. This section is also the darkest and most vibrant in imagery of the poem.

The second section talks about the boy being greeted by a house full of strangers after the death of his younger brother, and the different ways each of his family members are handling the situation. The tone changes from section one to a deeper, more sad feel, as the writer is describing things like the main characters father crying, and old men offering their condolences to a child. Stanzas two, three and four develop the storyline in the form of the writer leading the reader through the house, as the main character is made uneasy by things like his father crying, the baby laughing in the pram, and people whispering about him.

The Essay on Main Character Poe Romantic Man

Romantic literature is such that an author writes in an attempt to convey his feelings on what the world should be like. It is unrealistic, unreasoning, and imaginative writing. William Cullen Bryant and Edgar Allen Poe are two examples of romantic writers. Though Poe fits the mold of a romantic writer it is obvious that his writings do not mirror those of Bryant or many other known romantic ...

Stanza five is where the poem begins to explain the tragedy, through the last two lines “at ten o’clock the ambulance arrived, with the corpse, stanched and bandaged by the nurses. ” The third part of the poem is begins at stanza six and goes all the way until the finish. This part, for me, was the most emotional of the three, and really defines the theme and feel of the poem. The ending sentence of stanza six, “I saw him for the first time in six weeks, paler now… ” tells the reader that the boy had been away for an extended period of time, and in theory, didn’t get to say goodbye to his little brother.

The third section also ties up the poem, as it takes the storyline from the previous waiting at school to grieving with his family, and finishes with a simple explanation of the tragedy, and brief feeling of regret that the boy didn’t spend more time with his brother. A Mid-Term Break usually means holidays, time off school or fun, which is the complete opposite to the themes of the poem. Although the title suggests that the poem is going to be revolving around a holiday, the reader soon discovers that the poem is dealing with a much darker subject, a death in the family.

In the opening part of the poem there is a worrying atmosphere, which for me is clear through the line “knelling classes to a close. ” This line suggests that the main character hasn’t been made aware of what has happened, but leads the reader to imagine that whatever has happened, cannot be good. The second section is where the reader knows that someone has died, and that it is an immense heartbreak for the family. This is clear through the first two lines of stanza two, where the strong, solid fatherly figure of the boy is rendered distraught and upset by the tragedy, leaving the main character virtually helpless in his own grief.

The second section also starts to introduce the reader to the deeper meaning of the poem, which is the main character becoming an adult, as the main character is feeling uneasy, and partially numb, as he doesn’t know how to react to the situation as a child. The sentence “as my mother held my hand in hers and coughed out angry tearless sighs” also gives the reader an insight into just how shattered the family is after the death, as his mother is described as being ‘too upset to cry,’ and that the main character feels that he now has to step up, being the oldest child, and comfort his family as an adult.

The Essay on Decorum Est Poem Reader Frost

Death is something that every person will have to deal with at some point in his or her life. The poems 'Dulce et Decorum Est' and 'Nothing Gold Can Stay' both deal with the concept of death, but in very different ways. They provide views of what death can be like from opposite ends of the proverbial spectrum. Death can be a very hard thing to experience, and the emotions that it evokes can be ...

The final part of the poem is the boy goes to the room where his brothers body is being is laid out. This is the event that the entire poem has been moving towards, essentially the climax of the whole poem. The final stanzas of the poem emphasise how tragic the event is, by leading the reader to imagine the younger brother as a helpless, pure, and peaceful child. Through the line “He lay in the four foot box as in his cot,” the younger brothers youth and purity is better exemplified.

The imagery used in the third section of ‘Mid-Term Break’ is the ‘last goodbye’ when the main character goes to visit his younger brother, as he hasn’t seen him in six weeks. This ‘final goodbye’ is the peak of emotion in the poem, and takes the awkward subject of peace and gives it a form of peace and serenity. The final goodbye also refers back to the deeper meaning of becoming an adult, as the main character is not only saying goodbye to his baby brother, but also his childhood. Seamus Heaney’s choice of words in this poem is what made it so emotionally raw.

The central feeling of loss and sadness in the poem is expressed through phrases like “I met my father crying,” “angry tearless sighs” and “old men standing up to shake my hand. ” The phrase “I met my father crying” tells the reader that the main character feels as though his father had been transformed into a different person by the tragedy, and he was ‘meeting’ him for the first time. The lines “it was a hard blow,” “the baby cooed and laughed and rocked in the pram” and “whispers informed strangers I was the eldest” all add a second feeling of a certain awkwardness to the poem, which defines a child reacting to death brilliantly.

The Essay on Brother Allie Holden People Reader

In J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, a young man named Holden Caulfield goes through many misadventures during a three day stay in New York. Holden acts like a careless teenager but the reader gets the feeling that he cared once and wishes that he could again. He has what is almost an obsession with death and is constantly dwelling on the death of his brother Allie, who died of leukemia. He ...

The description of the dead brother at the end of the poem uses a warm and peaceful semantic field to contrast the previous emotions and feeling of the poem, and leave the reader with the idea that while the death of a child is ugly and horrific, that doesn’t mean that is the way the baby brother should be remembered. The grammatical features of ‘Mid-Term Break’ are used to emphasise the misery and numbness of death. The phrase “Counting bells knelling classes to a close” suggests that the writer is describing the knelling of a church bell rather than the ringing of a school bell, which refers to the idea of a funeral.

The whole poems use of first person view gives the main character a feeling of detachment and isolation, as he is describing other people’s reactions to the tragedy throughout the poem, but he never describes how he feels. This feeling of isolation is also reflected through the form of rift that the death has caused through the main characters family. The main character seems to be detached from his family upon arriving home from school as he notices people talking about him being away at school, and in the same line that “his mother held his hand in hers and coughed out angry tearless sighs. The disconnection of the one sentence, split into two stanzas, shows the reader the disconnection between the boy and his mother, and his family in general. He does not feel the closeness or comfort of holding her hand; he feels a kind of awkward numbness to the situation and doesn’t know how to react. The final description of the corpse uses calm nouns and adjectives, instead of the gory description of the horrific accident.

For example, Seamus Heaney used expressions like “I saw him for the first time in six weeks, paler now,” “wearing a poppy bruise,” “he lay in a four foot box” and “the bumper knocked him clear” to leave the reader with the idea that the dead brother is nothing but a vulnerable, pure child. In ‘Mid-Term Break’ there is no concrete rhyme scheme, which says to the reader that the lack of rhythm makes the poem less optimistic and enjoyable. The general sounds of the poem are blank or free verse, therefore the poem tells the story without the use of rhyme.

The Essay on Death Penalty for Children

The death penalty issue has always been one of the most important issues of the contemporary system of justice. Years ago the majority of the criminals were male over 20 years old, but nowadays the situation has changed. Not only adults are sentenced but children who are under 18 years old nowadays they commit murders and other terrible crimes. However, a child is always a child and if he commits ...

The free verse style suits the poem well, as the story being told is so raw with emotion and has such a sad feeling to it that the abrupt style of the poet tells the story well. This also meant that the one line at the end of the poem that did rhyme was emphasised even more. This line is important to the poem as it reflects the appalling subject of a four year olds death. The fact that he was only four stresses the tragedy the family if faced with. Seamus Heaney vividly represented a child’s journey into maturity through the form of a death in the family in ‘Mid-Term Break. The writer used the perfect combination of sounds, words and syntax to express how he felt during the series of events that occur for a child after a death in the family, and did well at letting the audience live through the experience. Not only did Seamus tell the story of a boy’s baby brother’s death, but he also explained the feeling of isolation and detachment that a child has to experience when his/her parents are struck with a tragedy. The poem leaves the reader with the feeling or idea that a child is isolated on his journey

That’s why I always become excited. There are lots of things to do and see. My father spent his whole life in that village. Spending holidays in the village is really fun for me.

My Holidays at Home: We arrived in the village at noon. it took 5 hours car journey. The road was pretty good. The government is working on these local areas. My uncles, cousins, and grandparents were ready to welcome us. They were really happy to see us visiting them. My younger sister was really excited to see everyone.

When she came here a few years ago she was a kid, she can’t remember anything and that’s why she has to learn everything again. I find all of my cousins and went to our home with them. My cousins are really helpful. They love me a lot. Whenever I visit the village, they try to spend all of the time with me. They really care about me. I was really tired because of that long journey.

I took a bath and ate some ‘pitha’ made by aunties. They were amazing. I loved the taste. Then I asked every uncles and aunty about their life. Few neighbors also came to meet my family. Most of them were female.  I met with so many peoples. I was feeling really good to know such loving peoples in my own village.

Visiting the Village: After taking some rest and meeting with people, one of my cousins Bhuvan asked me to go out. I was agreed and few of us planned to take a little walk through the village. I wanted to see the entire village. We met lots of people on the road. I know some of them and don’t know some.

It’s a really great experience to see the village from so close. Lots of things have been changed but the beauty of an Indian village was still there. Villagers are really easy people and peace-loving. They love living together without having any problem. I loved their lifestyle. Most of them are fisherman, farmers.

But in this generation, lots of kids are educated and lots of them are studying in school and college. We have a college near our village and two schools in the village. That’s a really good thing that my village is progressing.

My Grandparents: The most important reason for visiting the village is my grandparents. I love them so much and I always wanted to spend some time with them. They were really excited to see us. Especially my grandmother really loves and she loves me a lot. She shared lots of stories with us. I still listen to her stories and loved them.

Conclusion: It was an amazing experience to spend time in my village . These holidays were the best holidays of my life.

How Long is an Essay? Guidelines for Different Types of Essay

Published on January 28, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on July 23, 2023.

The length of an academic essay varies depending on your level and subject of study, departmental guidelines, and specific course requirements. In general, an essay is a shorter piece of writing than a research paper  or thesis .

In most cases, your assignment will include clear guidelines on the number of words or pages you are expected to write. Often this will be a range rather than an exact number (for example, 2500–3000 words, or 10–12 pages). If you’re not sure, always check with your instructor.

In this article you’ll find some general guidelines for the length of different types of essay. But keep in mind that quality is more important than quantity – focus on making a strong argument or analysis, not on hitting a specific word count.

In an academic essay, the main body should always take up the most space. This is where you make your arguments, give your evidence, and develop your ideas.

The introduction should be proportional to the essay’s length. In an essay under 3000 words, the introduction is usually just one paragraph. In longer and more complex essays, you might need to lay out the background and introduce your argument over two or three paragraphs.

The conclusion of an essay is often a single paragraph, even in longer essays. It doesn’t have to summarize every step of your essay, but should tie together your main points in a concise, convincing way.

The suggested word count doesn’t only tell you how long your essay should be – it also helps you work out how much information and complexity you can fit into the given space. This should guide the development of your thesis statement , which identifies the main topic of your essay and sets the boundaries of your overall argument.

A short essay will need a focused, specific topic and a clear, straightforward line of argument. A longer essay should still be focused, but it might call for a broader approach to the topic or a more complex, ambitious argument.

As you make an outline of your essay , make sure you have a clear idea of how much evidence, detail and argumentation will be needed to support your thesis. If you find that you don’t have enough ideas to fill out the word count, or that you need more space to make a convincing case, then consider revising your thesis to be more general or more specific.

The length of the essay also influences how much time you will need to spend on editing and proofreading .

You should always aim to meet the minimum length given in your assignment. If you are struggling to reach the word count:

  • Add more evidence and examples to each paragraph to clarify or strengthen your points.
  • Make sure you have fully explained or analyzed each example, and try to develop your points in more detail.
  • Address a different aspect of your topic in a new paragraph. This might involve revising your thesis statement to make a more ambitious argument.
  • Don’t use filler. Adding unnecessary words or complicated sentences will make your essay weaker and your argument less clear.
  • Don’t fixate on an exact number. Your marker probably won’t care about 50 or 100 words – it’s more important that your argument is convincing and adequately developed for an essay of the suggested length.

In some cases, you are allowed to exceed the upper word limit by 10% – so for an assignment of 2500–3000 words, you could write an absolute maximum of 3300 words. However, the rules depend on your course and institution, so always check with your instructor if you’re unsure.

Only exceed the word count if it’s really necessary to complete your argument. Longer essays take longer to grade, so avoid annoying your marker with extra work! If you are struggling to edit down:

  • Check that every paragraph is relevant to your argument, and cut out irrelevant or out-of-place information.
  • Make sure each paragraph focuses on one point and doesn’t meander.
  • Cut out filler words and make sure each sentence is clear, concise, and related to the paragraph’s point.
  • Don’t cut anything that is necessary to the logic of your argument. If you remove a paragraph, make sure to revise your transitions and fit all your points together.
  • Don’t sacrifice the introduction or conclusion . These paragraphs are crucial to an effective essay –make sure you leave enough space to thoroughly introduce your topic and decisively wrap up your argument.

how i spent my mid term break 450 words essay

‘Mid Term Break Critical Essay – Due 24/11/2015

Choose a poem which describes an emotional situation. Give a brief description of the situation and show how the poet explains the emotions involved.

Introduction following TARTSS structure

Paragraph 1 – Describe the situation (Referring to first part of essay question)

  • Shows the irony of the poem
  • Expect a normal, happy school holiday
  • Reality is a forced break caused by his brother’s death

Paragraph 2 – First emotion – isolation

Seamus Heaney’s poem deals with a range of emotions but the theme of isolation is present from the beginning of the poem. The speaker has to spend most of his day seemingly waiting alone:

‘I sat all morning in the college sick bay’

Heaney’s use of the first person pronoun ‘I’ instead of ‘we’ instantly establishes the notion of the boy waiting alone. As this is the first word in the whole poem, it places a focus on the speaker as isolated. As we know ‘Midterm Break’ is an autobiographical poem, we can surmise that the speaker is male. He is not only waiting alone but waiting in the ‘college sick bay’ connotes the idea of sickness and unpleasantness; this foreshadows what is to come later in the poem. The bells are ‘knelling’ and Heaney’s word choice here is significant. Knelling bells are normally heard at funerals and have connotations of death. As the boy is sitting alone, in an unpleasant surrounding, hearing funereal bells, the reader is immediately alerted to not only the theme of grief, but also the theme of isolation. We feel sympathetic to the boy as he waits, picked up by neighbours, to be taken home where the body of his little brother awaits him.

The theme of isolation is further strengthened later in the poem when the speaker finally learns about the death of his brother. Heaney’s word choice is suggestive of isolation when he writes:

‘With the corpse, stanched and bandaged by the                                               nurses’

The poet’s use of the word ‘corpse’ has connotations of death and decay. These are unusual connotations to give to a sibling so it suggests that the speaker feels a sense of detachment towards the body of his brother – perhaps he is in disbelief about his death. Ultimately, the detachment the speaker feels towards ‘the corpse’ is emblematic of the emotion of isolation and suggests not only the literal distance between the two brothers – one dead, one alive, but also the emotional disconnection as he seems to be detached from his grief.

Paragraph 3 – reader (and speaker) in suspense as ignorant as to who has died

Paragraph 4 – inexperience / uncertainty (About the way adults treat him)

Paragraph 5 – grief – Parents’ grief

Paragraph 6 – speaker’s grief/loss – goes from controlled/detached to guilt?

How I Spent My Summer Vacation: 500 Words Essay

Spent My Summer Vacation

Who does not love summer vacations? All students look forward to this time of the year. We have different plans to spend this time of the year through different activities. While some of us love to go on tours, some would love to spend time at home. But, no matter how you spend your summer vacation, it helps create memories we treasure.

Importance Of Summer Vacation

Summer vacations are the most awaited time of the year. It is the time when students finally get to spend some time away from the monotony of school and regular classes. Education and schooling are essential indeed. However, we all need a break so that the healthy process of learning and developing ourselves does not feel tiring. Summer vacation is the best opportunity for a rejuvenating experience. So, here is how I spent my summer vacation –

How I Spent My Summer Vacation

This summer vacation, I spent my time in the city with my aunt. Being a village student, I never had the opportunity to explore the cities until this summer vacation. This summer vacation, I spent time with my aunt, who lives in Kolkata. My Aunt is a doctor in Kolkata. This summer vacation, I came to live with her for a few days.

Since my aunt had to work the night shift, she could spend the day with me. During the, we would take the public bus and take a tour of the City of Joy, Kolkata. She used to take me to some of the historical places and local attractions.

Kolkata is known for its vivacity, culture, and colors. Located in the eastern part of India, it is the center of many historical events and home to diverse cultures. This summer vacation, I spent time visiting some of the most prestigious places in Kolkata.

Places I Visited

I went to Victoria Memorial, a famous landmark in Kolkata housing some of the most famous sculptures, and paintings, artifacts from the colonial era in India. I also saw the magnificent Howrah Bridge over the Hooghly river in Kolkata. This is one of the busiest bridges in the world and stores the unique engineering marvel of the city of joy.

Memory I Made

What I loved the most during this trip was going to M. P. Birla Planetarium . It is one of the finest astrological observatories, and I cannot stop thinking about all the collections of their astronomy gallery. I also enjoyed my trip to the Alipur zoo with my aunt.

This is where I saw the tiger, the lion, and the python. We also tasted different street foods with my aunt during our trips. She used to treat me to the best street foods available in Kolkata. Sometimes we were late to return home, and my aunt had to go to work during the evening. However, I loved the experience of traveling around the city with my aunt. It was a thrilling experience for me.

Once the summer vacation was over, I had to return home and go back to school again. Although I returned, my mind was filled with the memories of the busy city streets, historical places, and vibrant city life. This summer vacation was full of great experiences I will never forget.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation: 400-450 Word Essay

It is true that for a student, summer vacations are one of the most anticipated times of the year. I used to look forward to summer vacations too till last year. But now that I am in my final year of school, the realization slowly started sinking in that summer vacations won’t be a carefree time for me as this year I have to spend the vacation preparing for my school final examinations. Because of this, I was not really looking forward to summer vacation this year. Almost all of my friends were also feeling the same way as the vacations were drawing near.

The Surprise

So you can well understand the happiness I felt when my parents announced that they had planned a trip for me to go on during summer vacation. But Little did I know that more surprises awaited me. My parents along with my friends’ parents have decided that since this is our final summer vacation in school, they will allow us to go on a trip together alone with no parental supervision. We will all be going to Shimla and staying at the house of one of my friend’s relatives.

Imagine the happiness and excitement that my friends and I felt upon hearing this news. Since all our parents decided to break the news on the same evening, we all got to know around the same time. Since we will be leaving in three days, the next few days were spent simultaneously packing and planning with our friends on the phone. On the day, a car driven by a friend’s older brother picked all of us up from our homes. It took us around 9 hours to reach Shimla.

What we did in Shimla

We were tired and fell asleep. But the next day, we rose early to explore Shimla. We went on a short trek to visit Jakhu Temple and enjoyed the panoramic view from the hilltop. The next day, we went on a day trip to Kufri, a hill station near Shimla where we tried various adventurous activities like skiing and horse riding. The adrenaline rush I felt was simply amazing. We also visited several historical landmarks, strolled down the Mall road, visited local markets and apple farms, rode the toy train, and took a walk in the pine forests.

We were in Shimla for 15 days and I think we tried out all the activities for tourists and visited almost every part of Shimla. All the time we were in Shimla, we were in awe of the beautiful natural scenery surrounding us. Needless to say, I immensely enjoyed my very first trip with friends. I will forever cherish the memories I made on this trip.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation: 200 Words Essay

Spent My Summer Vacation

Summer vacations are my most awaited time of the year. Every year, My school arranges small trips to different places with students of different classes. This year, they did not have any plan like that. So, I, and other students of my school, had to spend the vacation at home.

Unexpectedly, this summer vacation was different for me. I spent most of the time of the day indoors. But this was one of the best experiences since I got to spend lots of time with my friends and family.

During this summer vacation, I spent lots of time on my hobbies and favorite activities. I love drawing, so this summer vacation, I picked up on it and spent most of the time of my days drawing. I also love to read science fiction, so I indulged in this hobby as well.

But, when I was not spending my time in these activities, I was playing Chess with my father. Once we had lunch, we used to watch movies together. In the afternoon, I used to go out with my friends from the village . Sometimes we played cricket, and sometimes we only strolled around the riverside.

The summer vacation was fun, relaxing, and full of fond memories for me. The different experience I had this year makes me look forward to the summer vacation in the coming years.

Essays About Myself | How I Spend My Mid-Term Holiday The climate of Murree suits me well, but there is a time in the year, usually when the rainy season is well advanced. When I begin to feel tired. This year I was feeling slack and not inclined for work, so I was quite pleased when my cousin Asim who had come down to have his eyes tested by an oculist asked me to come back to Murree for a few days with him. My father gave permission so I went off gladly.

I shall never forget my first impressions of the lovely scenery of the hills. I had never before been far from Murree and pictures of hill scenery had altogether failed to convey to me a true picture of the beauty and majesty of the lofty. Slowly the bus puffed its way up the slopes. There were other boys in the bus and they agreed that the engine was saying I think I can. Slowly and with effort. When it reached the top of the hill and started to produce smoke fast again it was saying " I knew I could I knew I could".

But the hills covered with noble trees and picturesque rocks and great valley lying in between all combined to fill my mind with a sense of awe and admiration. I am told that there is more impressive scenery in the New Murree Hills but nothing will make me forget the rapture of that first sight of the deodar trees. My uncle's house is just outside Murree and we went frequently for walks across the open country.

I found at once a great difference in the air. It seemed to be Murree stimulating more refreshing. Frequently I was not content to walk but had to run a little from pure joy of living. The splendid apples of Murree were no longer available the season being too late for them but I tasted some of the finest figs have ever enjoyed. Murree is a fresh clean city and the pure airs always sweep through the streets.

I thought of the olden times now people used to live in these snow covered hills, I went to enjoy Kashmir Point. There I had beautiful scenery. Later I went to Pindi Point. There I enjoyed the chair lift. All it looked wonderful. It was as if the week I spent there passed like a cinema film which had been shown much too fast and I regretted having to leave, though cheered with a promise that I should return in the coming summer and perhaps even visit the neighbouring beauty spot of Murree Hills. Here is a basic outline that will help you to write a good composition about how you spent your last holiday:

Introduction

You need to begin your essay with a catchy opening sentence that would grab your reader’s attention. Then quickly introduce the topic or purpose of your essay, and say where you went for the holiday and what you did.

Body Paragraphs

Just like you would do in the body of any other essay, divide your holiday experience into several key events or activities.

You can tell whether the holiday experience met your expectations, and how you feel about it even at the point of penning down your essay. Then state whether you plan to do anything in the future drawing inspiration from your holiday experience.

My Relaxing Holiday 200 Words

My last holiday was amazing! I did not travel to any new or interesting location, but I had a lot of fun staying home. I took time to enjoy early morning sleep every day. This alone felt like a treat after waking up early for school the entire term.

In the afternoons, I went outside to play with my friends. We played the soccer ball around in the park, and would enjoy pretending to famous athletes.

Sometimes during the holiday, it would rain. And when that happened, I just stayed inside and got cozy. I got a good book and devoured it with a mug of hot chocolate by my side. I also liked watching funny movies with my family and munching on popcorn.

In some evenings, we had barbecues in the backyard. We grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, while Dad told us stories about when he was a kid. I don’t think that anything can feel more special than spending so much time together.

Although I did not travel anywhere, my holiday was full of fun and relaxation. I feel recharged and ready to go back to school now!

My Last Holiday Adventure 250 Words

Since I have been spending my holidays, none had been as enjoyable as the last one. When we vacated last term, I spent two weeks at home in order to assist my parents in farm work. After this, I left for Onitsha in order to visit some places of interest.

I visited the modern and popular Niger bridge which links Onitsha and Asaba, Mid-West. I also visited the famous Onitsha Main Market. It has no rival in comparison in West Africa just as Ibadan Liberty Stadium has no comparison in West Africa. When I was being taken round the great Onitsha Main Market by a friend, I observed that traders in their respective stalls felt at home. Some of them tuned in their radio sets. They were happy.

I spent one week at Onitsha and departed for Enugu. When I was at Enugu I visited the Eastern Nigeria Parliament, and I saw Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe’s Statue just close to the house of Assembly. I also visited Enugu Airport and several other places of interest. I spent five days in Enugu and departed for Lagos by a train. “Lagos Limited”, and that was my first time of entering train. When I reached Lagos, I hardly believed that it was a town in Nigeria. It was very beautiful indeed just like London.

When I was in Lagos, I went to the House of Representatives, the Senate, National Stadium, Air- port, Tinubu Square and other places of interest.

I spent 5 days in Lagos and returned home to resume School. I wrote a story on all my observations in the journey.

My Last Holiday Essay 300 Words

Last summer, I went on a trip that I will not easily forget. This is because it meant much more to me than just a vacation; rather, my perception was changed.

I had never been in Thailand before the holiday but only heard of its beauty. Finally visiting the country made my holiday worthwhile. The place was so different from home! Their market was busy with many colorful items for sale and their food was so delicious. I tried several new and amazing dishes, and they were all lovely. While in Thailand, I couldn’t fail to notice how beautiful their temples are with roofs gold plated and other carvings done wonderfully.

I am an outdoor kind of person. That is why spending time in nature during my holiday made me very happy. Some days I would hike through forests while others would find me relaxing at the beach. On one fine morning, I woke up early to witness sunrise over New Zealand’s mountains. It was simply breathtaking and that made me feel alive.

Lastly, to add some holiday fun into it; i did some daring activities too. For instance, skydiving and bungee jumping were included in my itinerary. Although at first scared, it turned out pretty awesome! I learned that it’s good to challenge yourself and try new things sometimes.

Looking back on my last holiday, I feel very grateful for all the experiences I had. I discovered a lot of new things and also made new friends. Yes, the holiday is over, but the memories I made will stay with me forever.

From the samples above, you can see that the key to writing a good essay about your holiday is to engage your readers with descriptive details and thoughtful reflections.

How I Spent My Holiday Break

Rest. Relaxation. Rejuvenation. We look forward to our holiday breaks as a way to refresh ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually. We look forward to spending time with our families and staying at home adjusting to a new routine of no alarm clocks, no papers to grade, no lessons to plan.

When we come back from our holiday break, we’re ready. We’re going to begin a new unit plan, or we’ve adjusted an old one, or our guest speaker has been scheduled. The point is, we’re ready to be with our students and begin again.

Why then did students seem so tense, so anxious before their most recent holiday break? It wasn’t a sense of impending joy they were feeling, but more a sense of impending doom.

I noticed that many students’ trepidation was on overdrive. About a week before our scheduled break, I stood outside my office during passing time. But this particular morning I noticed the hallway language. Sure, every once in a while one might hear a curse word said by a negligent student. But, one “bomb” after another was exploding in my little corner of the world. I found myself encouraging students to be aware of their language, be courteous to their peers, and be on their way to their next class. When I mentioned to a colleague that something must be up, he quipped, “Just a full moon.”

However, as the days wore on, it became evident there was more to this than just a full moon. The students were surly and fretful, and some were downright sad. While I was looking forward to all the wonderful things that come with time off, what could some of my students be looking forward to? I began to wonder.

As much as our students might complain about school, about teachers, and about homework, let’s not forget about all of the things that we do provide, things that can’t be measured in data-driven reports and standardized tests. Schools provide a routine, a scheduled haven from life’s curveballs. We provide directions, both written and verbal, on what to do. And let’s face it, on some days that may be all a student can do. We provide socialization, the opportunity to see friends and catch up on the latest news. We give students a reason to get up in the morning.

Therefore, the holiday break could be a stinging slap of change from the warm embrace of their reality. Their routine has now changed. A routine created by a bell system now allows students to do whatever they want; they are making decisions and perhaps allowing temptations too challenging to overcome. Directions are no longer clear to them, and it’s quite possible that no adult is home to offer important directives. Now the student becomes the adult taking care of siblings and in charge of household chores. Finally, socialization is cut off. Being at home may be a stressful—it may be a violent place where basic social skills are nonexistent.

As we move into second semester and into third quarter, I know another break is looming in the not too distant future. I can’t help but feel a little worried for some of them. How can one offer a sense of calm before what could be considered a storm of change?

I don’t have all the answers; none of us do. We don’t have control over our students’ parents, their households, or their friends. But we do have power over our words and actions. Here are some suggestions to help our students slide into a smooth transition that may not be too jarring or too sudden.

First, don’t oversell the break. Are you consistently referring to time off? “After break,” “don’t forget about the break,” “when we get back from break.” Perhaps too much “breaking” will cause our students to break beyond their limits. While we might need to refer to the time, let’s try to put it in the proper perspective.

Next, let’s offer students a list of pertinent websites or movies that they might enjoy reading and watching during this time. Appeal to your students—after all, you know their likes and dislikes. Also, offer students some hopeful, inspiring films you think they may want to watch. A positive message lets them know you care.

Also, the value of reading could allow them to escape to another time and place. Offering some contemporary poetry anthologies to take home sends the message that you’ll be thinking of them.

Finally, a brief handwritten message offers a sense of belonging and connectedness. Let them know that you will be thinking about them with a personalized note.

As we move on toward third quarter, excited over all the possibilities of progress, we know how quickly time moves. Let’s take a few moments to reflect on those students who won’t be fortunate enough to enjoy what some of us might take for granted. Be mindful of our language in creating a sense of departure. Create those lists and compose those notes.

Hopefully, instead of hearing curses in the hallways, we might hear a joyful noise. What was once anxiety might be replaced by a sense of assurance that we will be together again, very soon—rested, relaxed, and rejuvenated.

Mid-Term Break Analysis

Mid-Term Break Analysis

Analysis of Mid-Term Break Poem by Seamus Heaney. There are stories in the poem and story in the poem “Mid- Term Break” by Seamus Heaney is about a young boy who just come back from boarding school had loss his brother in an accident. The death of the brother had give difference emotional respond by the family member about the death . Literary device make poem better and make it interesting to read . Furthermore, there are a lot of literary devices that use by Seamus in this poem.

He use personification in this poem . Personification is a figure of speech in which human characteristics are attributed to an abstract quality, animal, or inanimate objects (Personification, Encyclopedia Britannica eb. com). For examples that related to the poem is  “Counting bells knelling classes to a close”, the bells being attributed to human characteristic which is “knelling”. The word knelling is often associated with death (as with the “knelling” of a funeral bell) so this adds a morbid tone to the opening of the poem (Mid Term Break , Teachnet).

He also uses metaphor in this poem. Metaphor is a figure of speech in which an implied comparison is made between two unlike things that actually have something in common (About. com). Examples for the metaphor is “the corpse stanched” and “candles soothed the bedside. ”. The candles is use to create the image of sorrow and with the uses of metaphor the writer will create the visual imagery in our mind which is the candles produce a dim light that put the numb situation in that house. By reading the poem also we can see that Seamus Heaney only use simile once to compare the coffin to a cot, “He lay in the four foot box as in a cot. ” Simile is a figure of speech in which two fundamentally unlike things are explicitly compared, usually in a phrase introduced by “like” or “as. ” . This tells us that the boy is four years old as they had mentioned that A four foot box, a foot for every year meaning that the boy has grown to four foot which is four years. This poem is organised with three lines per stanza, almost like an unrhymed tercet with the exception of the last line.

This structure make the last line stand out more so than the rest which shows the readers the importance of this line. In this poem there is no specific rhythm or rhyme pattern. However the last word in the poem rhymes with the last word in the stanza before. As mentioned before, Heaney used structure to outline the importance of the last line, but poems are often not read but heard and so this rhyme allows listeners to notice the emphasis on the last line. ( Analysis of “Mid-Term Break” by Seamus Heaney, Bukisa). In this poem there are several important themes such as time, age, family, pain, love and most of all death.

Death is an awkward subject that most want to avoid in life but it is also one that dominates people lives the most. We live because we don’t want to die. However there are times when unexpected death occurs, and in those times it’s the victim’s family that suffers the most. This poem takes the audience along on the speaker’s journey to accepting his beloved little brother’s death. Though family, age and love seems to be opposites of death and pain, one side cannot exist without the other. Therefore, in this poem family, love and age are all crucial themes. .( Analysis of “Mid-Term Break” by Seamus Heaney, Bukisa).

Conclusion, this poem contain show that the dead of family member cannot be easily accepted by other family member because loss of the love one is something sad and sorrow . The death can be happen every time and everywhere . The choices of language and literary devices are very appropriate and served their purpose, especially in emphasising the last line which wraps up the poem on one bitter sweet note. Mid-term Break ————————————————- BY MICHAEL WOODS MID-TERM BREAK The subject of this poem is the death of Seamus Heaney’s younger brother, Christopher who was killed by a car at the age of four. It is a tremendously poignant poem and its emotional power derives in large measure form the fact that Heaney is very muted and understated with respect to his own emotional response. He chooses to focus more upon the reaction of his parents in order to convey the shocking impact of the death of their little boy. Usually, we must careful not to assume the “I” in a poem is, in fact, the poet.

In this case, though, we may be sure that Mid-Term Break is purely and intensely autobiographical. This beautiful lyric poem is certainly enormously moving. It presents an elder brother having to deal with a terrible trauma. As is frequently the case with Heaney, there is an arresting amalgam of manliness and tenderness in the writing that lends it both warmth and astringency at the same time. This poem is powerfully moving because of its emotional restraint and control of tone. Heaney concentrates on observed details and it is the accumulation of these details that helps to make the poem so memorable.

An elegiac tone is established at the beginning of the poem. An elegy is a poem written to commemorate a dead person who is traditionally resurrected in a benign landscape. Here, though, the little boy is recalled with clarity and realism; Heaney finishes with the rueful and terrible equation “A four foot box, a foot for every year”, which starkly conveys the shocking loss of a young child. The poem opens with a line that might easily describe any child but the second line introduces a darkly foreboding atmosphere: “I sat all morning in the college sick bay Counting bells knelling classes to a close. The word “knell” is appropriate in the context of a poem about death because it is the sound of a funeral bell. We do not normally associate school bells with death but this day was to prove horrifically different for the poet. The rhythm and alliteration also reinforce the mournful tone. The ‘c’ an ‘l’ sounda, as well as the internal rhyme of “bells” and “knelling” help to suggest both the idea of finality and of time seeming to slow down. The poet is driven home by his neighbours and not his parents, another unusual event preparing the reader for the idea that something is terribly wrong.

The fact that Heaney remembers the precise time, “two o’clock” is convincing as we all tend to remember precise timings when recalling traumatic, like changing events. Stanza two concentrates on the poet’s father’s emotional response who is “crying”. Heaney tells us that his father “had always taken funerals in his stride” but this death is unnatural as well as personal. The be bereft of a little child is unbearable for the normally rock solid father who would, we assume, be the sort of man to offer words of comfort to others just as “Big Jim Evans” offers his to Heaney’s family in “saying it was a hard blow. (line 6) There is a terrible double meaning in the phrase “hard blow” because Jim Evans, by referring to the emotional impact of Christopher’s death, also unwittingly uses language that recalls the impact of the car that killed him. The third stanza presents us with another contrast, the baby’s innocent joy at seeing his elder brother. Remembering the title of the poem, we might be tempted to hope, along with the Heaney family that this event is some terrible nightmare that might be woken up from. The baby’s normal behaviour, though, only accentuates the reality of the situation.

From a technical point of view, Heaney’s skilful use of the iambic pentameter helps to emphasise the family drama that is played out in the poem. The baby’s innocent obliviousness to the tragic circumstance of his elder brother’s return from school is captured in, “The baby cooed and laughed and rocked the pram. ”  The bouncy emphatic rhythm is in direct contrast to the opening stanza’s measured pace. The unusual aspect of the situation is developed further in lines 8-11 as the young Heaney is “embarrassed” by the proffering of sympathy from “old men”.

Their awkwardness is economically conveyed through their euphemistic use of language in telling him that “there were sorry” for his “trouble” (line10). The sibilant alliteration in “Whispers informed strangers I was the eldest” (line 11) captures the hushed, muted atmosphere in the house. Heaney goes on to concentrate upon his mother’s reaction to her little boys’ death who says nothing but holds his hand in her own as she “coughed out angry tearless sighs” (line 13).

The implication here is that she has cried so much that there is nothing more to cry but incensed by the driver’s failure to avoid her son. Line 14 begins with another precise time reference and the reality of the family having to receive “the corpse”. This is the first time that we know that the “trouble” is connected with. The sixth stanza recounts the poet’s visit to his brother’s room. Heaney conveys the feeling of being unable to name the reality of the situation: “Next morning I went up into the room. ” (LINE 16)

He does not go on to say that this is where his little brother is lying dead. Instead the surrounding details emphasise the atmosphere of quiet as the boys are reunited after “six weeks”. The snowdrops and candles are symbolic of life but they are also ritualistically funereal. The word “soothed” may be applicable to both the idea that the flowers and candles are placed as a comfort to the dead boy but they are also for the solace of the grieving family. Unable to articulate the reality of his brother’s death, the poet chooses to present his earlier self, noticing that he was “Paler” (line 18).

Another flower image draws attention to the apparently insignificant injury that had such a devastating effect, as well as the fragility of life with which the poppy is traditionally associated: “Wearing a poppy bruise on his left temple, He lay in the four foot box as in his cot. No gaudy scars, the bumper knocked him clear. A four foot box, a foot for every year. ” The description here becomes almost unbearably powerful because of the restraint Heaney exercises. The young boy could easily be asleep but, tragically, it is only as if he were asleep.

He will never wake up again. The word “cot”, along with the earlier use of “pram” in stanza three emphasises the unnatural eruption of death into the life of a family with very young children. It also helps to highlight the horror faced by any parent who is predeceased by a child. The final couplet is consistent in tone with the remainder of the poem. Heaney chooses to add a single line stanza to complete the poem that has seven three line stanzas preceding it. The effect of this is to present a terrible equation on its own, something that stands out baldly and inescapably.

Just as there are “No gaudy scars” visible on the poor child’s body, so too there is no lurid concentration upon injury or any self-indulgent displays of grief. The final line is, in a sense, “knocked clear” of the rest of the poem through Heaney’s decision to separate it. There is a heartbreaking logic in the statement that reminds us both of the small stature of the child and the brevity of his young life. As a lyric poem commemorating a terrible event, it is difficult to imagine anything to surpass it for control, truthfulness and austere reverential beauty. http://minwookang. wordpress. om/2011/06/19/poem-analysis-on-mid-term-break-by-seamus-heaney/   Seamus Heaney’s “Mid-term Break” portrays the speaker’s experience of confronting his little brother’s death. Understanding this poem is not as hard as other poems since the meaning is not so complicated. This poem flows similar to a narrative since it is written in first person perspective and continuously describes the scene of the funeral. Through a gloomy tone, the poet depicts two major themes; death and family love. The theme of death is prevalent in this poem. The plot itself is about a younger brother dying by a car accident.

Phrases like “my father was crying” and “sorry for my trouble” show that the dead person is one of the family members and the last line, “A four foot box, a foot for every year,” tells us that the dead one is only four years old. From these two facts readers can possibly assume that this poem is describing the death of a four-year-old brother of the speaker and conveying the tragic emotion. Also, “The baby cooed and laughed and rocked the pram” is ironical yet even more tragic. While all others are serious and crying, the baby doesn’t understand the situation but laughs as playing with the pram.

The child will realize the gravity and sorrow later on, which makes the poem more tragic. Family love is also an important theme in “Mid-term Break. ” Coming back home the speaker meets his family members, who are also having a hard time overcoming the agony. Death is devastating force that drives people into deep depression. However family love is what cures the wounds and stimulates the will to regain energy for living. Here in this poem the speaker says “my mother held my hand” and “In hers and coughed out angry tearless sighs. ” The speaker must have felt a lot of responsibility as the “eldest” mentioned on the previous line.

Even though his heart was tearing apart, he couldn’t wail like kids. Though, in his mother’s hands he could feel relief and cry. Family love becomes a great support whenever there are heart-breaking incidents, as explained in this poem. “Mid-term Break” has many interesting points, obviously Heaney’s elaborations, even from the title. A “mid-term break” is period of a school year when students are relaxed and enjoying their leisure times. A short yet rejoicing respite in the middle of the semester, a mid-term break as the title gives an impression that this poem will have a happy and active mood.

Though, ironically, the poem turns out to be completely sad and also extremely calm. Heaney used visual imageries like “the corpse, stanched” and “candles soothed the bedside” that depict a dark, static picture to create a gloomy mood. Skimming through, one can notice that the structure of the poem is straightforward. Each stanza, except the last one, consists of three lines. At the first glimpse, the poem seems uniform. However, this poem doesn’t follow the ordinary form of tercets since there aren’t any rhymes. For example, “bay,” “close” and “home” of the first stanza doesn’t rhyme at all.

This free verse style enabled Heaney to convey the theme more clearly. If he had used the traiditional form with apparent rhyme schemes, the poem would have sounded a bit more playful and readers would be distracted by the ‘sound’ the poem is presenting. However, since there aren’t any rhymes, readers focus on the words themselves and also the tone is more like a narrative or thorough description rather than a mere poem. There is one more point very exceptional in this poem, which is the last line. The last line has only nine words, “A four foot box, a foot for every year. And it is the last stanza. This structure visually emphasizes the last line, showing that it has much importance. Also, in this poem there is no specific rhythm or rhyme pattern. However the last word in the poem rhymes with the last word of the previous stanza. Hence, it is clear that Heaney gave variation on the poem’s structure to outline the importance of the last line. Moreover, the very last line sums up the much of the whole poem; illustrating the coffin, the speaker is conveying the ambience of extreme sadness. Everyone feels sorrowful when confronting a death of a person.

One would be especially sad when it is a person whom you know, and even more if it is your family. And lastly, if it’s a death of a really young boy who lived only for four years and got killed by an accident, the death is much more tragic. So Heaney used alliteration, assonance and also repetition to add even greater emphasis on the “four foot box,” suggesting how important this line is. This poem, however, has more significance if the poet Seamus Heaney’s life and literary works are put into consideration. Seamus Heaney is an Irish poet who was eeply concerned about his national identity. His literary works in his earlier years are mostly about the identity of Irish people, fighting against the oppression of English influence. Many of his poems were even political in its purpose. Later on, his poems changed its theme to cultural diversity. On the other hand, this poem is different from Heaney’s typical poems. Not about nationalism or about overcoming nationalism, this poem focuses on universal topics: death and family. These themes do not really reflect societal issues.

In some ways, this poem, “Mid-term Break,” isn’t that influential probably why it is less well-known than his other poems. However, universal themes like death are what human beings have been questioning for centuries or even millenniums. Because of this, any one from any culture can understand and appreciate this poem, the reason why this poem is significant. Therefore, “Mid-term Break” by Seamus Heaney is a valuable literary piece because it has deeply and accurately explored the feelings of death and beautifully conveyed the emotion through written language.

Also, the poem shows that love and death cannot be really separated with each other. The more one loves, the more the death of the person hurts. This poem effectively delivered this heartbreaking reality and provided the readers a chance to ponder on meanings of death and family love. http://www. stmonicas. co. uk/Resources/user/docs/English/KS4%20-%20Literature%20Revision/Literature%20Revision/Mid%20Term%20Break%20notes. pdf Mid Term Break Meaning The poem is about the death of Heaney’s infant brother (Christopher) and how people (including himself) reacted to this.

The poem’s title suggests a holiday but this “break” does not happen for pleasant reasons. Metaphorical meaning In the poem Heaney explores people’s unnatural reactions to death. Attitudes and ideas This is an incredibly sad poem. The word ‘break’ suggests holiday but in this case it is far from any happy holiday we can imagine. Heaney talks about his father, who is apparently always strong at other funerals, but is distraught (very upset) by his child’s death, while the mother is too angry to cry. The young Seamus is made uneasy by hand shaking and euphemisms (like “Sorry for my trouble”), and by whispers about him.

When late at night the child’s body is returned Heaney sees this as “the corpse” (not a person). This contrasts wonderfully with the final section of the poem, where he is alone with his brother. Note the personal pronouns “him”, “his”, “he” – as opposed to “the corpse” – this brings a sense of closeness between the two brothers. The calm mood is beautifully shown in the imagery (“Snowdrops/And candles soothed the bedside” – literally they soothed the young Heaney). The flowers are a symbol in the poem, but also in reality for the family (a symbol of new life, after death).

The bruise is seen as not really part of the boy – he is “wearing” it (a metaphor), as if it could come off. Heaney likens the bruise to the poppy, a flower linked with death and soothing of pain (opiates come from poppies). The child appears as if sleeping (a simile). We contrast the ugly “corpse, stanched and bandaged”, which becomes a sleeping child – dead. The last line of the poem is most poignant and skilful – the size of the coffin is the measure of the child’s life. Language As stated above: imagery, metaphors, and similes.

Also, assonance and alliteration are used to emphasise sounds and feelings. For example ‘bells knelling’ is assonance and emphasises the sound of funeral bells and the idea of time dragging on. Themes Life/Death, sadness and relationships. Structure The poem has a clear formal structure, in three line stanzas. There are occasional rhymes but the poem’s last two lines form a rhyming couplet, and emphasizes the shortness of the child’s life. Many of the lines run on (enjambement) – they are stopped only in the last line of a stanza, and in three cases the lines run on from one stanza to the next. ttp://www. studymode. com/essays/Mid-Term-Break-Poetry-Analysi-466146. html Mid Term Break Poetry Analysis By erikamuldoon, Nov 2010 | 4 Pages (829 Words) | 517 Views The poem ‘Mid- Term Break’ describes the phenomenal loss that a family is suffering from the death of a child and brother. It is written from a young boy’s perspective as it continues to inform the audience of the grieve suffering that the family is currently enduring. It focuses on the feelings of the family and the funeral being the first time that the young boy has seen his brother since a car accident.

The structure of the poem ‘Mid-Term Break’ positions its audiences in a specific way throughout the use of structure. The following poem includes 8 stanzas each 3 sentences long. However, towards the end of the poem standing alone is the last stanza, it includes only 1 sentence. This was separated from the rest of the text to emphasize the ending of the poem as it is possibly the most important line. It reinforces the devastation of the event that has occurred whilst highlighting the impact that the death has had on the family. Additionally, each stanza has only 2 sentence most.

This allows the author to move time quickly. This is important within the poem as it often changes scenery quite quickly and due to the stanza’s being short, this allows the author to do so. It is clear that the poem has a slight lack of punctuation as the sentence structure is incorrect. Each doesn’t end with a full stop although, starts with a capital letter. This demonstrates that the boy may not have learnt much punctuation whilst at the same time gives its audience an insight into the young age of the boy. The overall tone of the poem is sombre and depressing.

Although we are soothed throughout mid way of the poem through Heaney’s use of language, the majority of the poem is filled with deep sadness due to the life of the infant that is cut short. Moreover, the title of the poem is slightly confusing as it suggests a ‘break’ meaning holidays or happiness however; reading the poem it contradicts in the fact that this ‘break’ was not filled with happiness or joy. http://www. helium. com/items/1778745-a-poignant-poem-by-seamus-heaney Poetry analysis: Mid-Term Break, by Seamus Heaney by Liz Allen Created on: March 20, 2010   Last Updated: July 02, 2012

With the title ‘Mid-Term Break’ Seamus Heaney suggests that this is a poem focusing on a childhood memory. This was, however, no happy break from school. The first stanza does not explain what the reason for the break was, but Heaney’s wait in the sick bay sets up a feeling that something is wrong. The use of the word ‘knelling’ rather than ‘tolling’ for the school bell has connotations of death. We discover during the course of the poem that Heaney was returning home for the funeral of his younger brother who had been killed in a road accident.

The second stanza shows how devastating this tragic accident was for Heaney’s family. Heaney remembers that he met his father ‘crying- / He had always taken funerals in his stride’. The third stanza, in contrast, opens with a description of the baby of the family that ‘cooed and laughed and rocked the pram’, showing that in some aspects family life went on as usual amid the grief. The third and fourth stanzas are linked by enjambment and by the description of Heaney’s feelings on confronting those who had come to pay their respects.

Heaney felt ’embarrassed / By old men’ as they stood up, shook his hand and expressed their sorrow. It must indeed have been strange and probably uncomfortable for a young boy to find himself in a situation of reversed roles. He was aware of ‘whispers’ as acquaintances told strangers that he was the eldest child of the family and attended boarding school. The fourth and fifth stanzas are also linked by enjambment and show how different Heaney’s mother’s reaction to the event was from his father’s.

As she held his hand she ‘coughed out angry tearless sighs’, conveying the sense that she was too upset to cry but sensitive to the need of her eldest child for comfort. In the fifth stanza Heaney describes in a matter-of-fact way that the ambulance brought the ‘corpse’, giving a sense that at first Heaney could perhaps not think of the body as being that of his brother. The tone changes, however, in the sixth stanza as Heaney goes up alone to see his brother’s body the following morning. He describes the presence of snowdrops and candles as soothing the bedside; this is a transferred epithet, as they actually soothed his feelings.

Heaney again uses enjambment to link this stanza with the seventh, mentioning that his brother now looked paler than the last time he had seen him six weeks previously. He uses the metaphor ‘Wearing a poppy bruise on his left temple’, poppies being the colour of blood as well as a symbol of the dead. Heaney uses the word ‘box’ rather than coffin, and is reminded as he looks at his brother of the way he saw him in his cot. The final line of the seventh stanza tells us that the little boy had no ‘gaudy
