FIFA World Cup: History and Future

Introduction, the nature of the competition as a spectacle, significance to the participating soccer teams and their fans.

Generally, spectacle refers to a memorable event due to the appearance it creates. Also, the word spectacle has been used in the seventeenth-century art in theater in English drama. On the other hand, the FIFA World cup is a soccer competition that is contested internationally by national soccer teams composed exclusively of male players. The competition is also referred to as Football World Cup or simply the World Cup. The countries of the national teams must be members of the worldwide soccer governing association known as Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). The first FIFA World Cup tournament took place in nineteen thirty whereafter; the contest has been conducted after an interval of four years. However, during World War Two, the competition did not take place. Recently, FIFA has been organizing women’s competitions which are officially known as FIFA Women World Cup. As with the men’s contests, the women’s competitions are also held after four years and take the format of the men’s competition.

The FIFA World Cup is a memorable event for all the stakeholders. Starting with the participating players, they have a lifetime experience where first-time players get a chance to play with veteran footballers. Also, the veteran and experienced players interact with their counterparts during the matches. Furthermore, these interactions are limited to the playing ground but rather also happen informally on a more personal basis. To the fans, the competition is an entertainment medium (Kim, 56). It creates all the excitement to both the people watching it live as well as those viewing it on electronic media. The event accommodates all types of people, including the young and the old.

The event is of grand nature. For instance, the preparation for the event is characterized by the improvement of the host nation(s) infrastructure, particularly in cities where the event takes place (Horne, 21). The tournaments venue is usually at full capacity, especially during the matches that approach the finals. Some people willing to watch the event are sometimes not able to secure a space due to a large number of people. The World Cup is internationally broadcast electronic as well as covered by print media. Through television and the internet, the event reaches almost all corners of the world; every country in all the continents of the world has a chance to watch the World Cup. However, some countries that are at war or where their governments restrict the broadcasting may fail to get the World Cup experience.

The FIFA World Cup is of commercial interest to many stakeholders. The organizers sell the rights to film and broadcast to a bidding international media organization that in turn gives local media houses the right to broadcast. This broadcasting of the event alone promotes many business establishments both directly and indirectly (Torgler, 290). In some countries, some matches are not broadcast on the national channels but rather on the subscription channels. Therefore, to watch the match, the viewer pays a fee depending on the match being played. Also, many businesses in the host nation(s) thrive during this period due to the presence of a large number of potential buyers. Moreover, the tourism sector in the host nation(s) experiences an upward turn in revenue (Torgler, 288). The event is also characterized by gambling and betting where individuals, as well as organizations, are involved. Individuals bet on the winning teams for money as well as other valuable things. Business establishments, including the media houses, promote their businesses by offering the audience a chance to win gifts and/or holidays by predicting the outcome of the World Cup tournaments.

The event is also characterized by the presence of dignitaries. Diplomats, including the head of state, are sometimes present, especially when the teams from their country are playing. Therefore, the World Cup is of importance to the governments of participating teams (Horne. 18).

The FIFA World Cup competition enhances the status of the participating teams. On top of the financial benefits that the teams gain, the teams’ position in the “FIFA World Rankings” is improved; this system is useful in decision-making within the soccer field (Horne, 56). Moreover, the participating teams gain more professional experience, which is a vital factor, especially to players who play in commercial settings. The World Cup allows football club managers to scout for good players. Therefore, the competition gives players a chance to improve their careers.

The World Cup competition also has some negative effects. A team or a player might lose a good reputation out of failure to meet the expectations of the stakeholders. Moreover, teams that lost during the initial phases of the competition end up incurring a lot of expenses.

To the fans, the World Cup is a form of entertainment and leisure. The fans celebrate their favorite team’s participation and success. Moreover, the competition gives an opportunity to soccer fanatics to bet. Furthermore, the event supports a number of economic activities.

The only sporting event that rivals the Olympics is FIFA World Cup, held every four years. Thus, it is no surprise that countries bid aggressively against each other to host FIFA World Cup because hosting the event allows them to demonstrate their economic and cultural prowess and also increases their profile and stature on the global stage. When Qatar was awarded the rights to host the 2022 World Cup, it was perceived as a historic moment because it is the first time a country in the Middle East will be home to such a high profile sports event. Hosting FIFA World Cup is a great honor for any country and it comes with certain obligations and high expectations. The recent news of hundreds of deaths among construction workers highlights the fact that Qatar has failed to fulfill the responsibilities that come with hosting a global event like FIFA World Cup, thus, the country should be stripped of the right to host the World Cup.

Mega sports events like FIFA World Cup also represent the collective progress mankind has made on social and cultural issues, thus, it is not a surprise that the deaths of construction workers has sparked a global outrage. If this had happened few hundred years ago, no soul would have been bothered by the news because different socioeconomic groups had different rights. But we have come a long way in terms of basic human rights. If organizations like FIFA choose to ignore ethical aspects in pursuit of economic interests, it sets a wrong precedent for other commercial organizations of all types. Today, organizations of all types are expected to fulfill their ethical obligations because the definition of stakeholders is much broader now.

If Qatar is allowed to keep the hosting right, it would set a wrong precedent for future hosts. By allowing Qatar to keep its right, FIFA will send the message that hosting countries can afford to ignore their ethical obligations as long as they are not exposed. And even if they are exposed, the damage could be contained with little or no consequences. FIFA President Sepp Blatter’s recent remark that there is plenty of time to deal with the issue (Gibson) only hurt’s FIFA’s ethical credentials. Stripping Qatar of hosting rights will send a strong message to future hosts that they cannot afford to ignore their social and ethical responsibilities because hosting right is not inalienable and if the situation warrants, FIFA will not hesitate from considering even the most extreme steps.

Qatar has been given the right to host World Cup in 2022 which still leaves us with nine years. Thus, FIFA cannot even hide behind the excuse of lack of time because many countries who bid against Qatar have the economical and technological prowess to complete preparations even if they are given the hosting right today. FIFA holds tremendous influence as a governing body of the most popular sport on the planet and it should display the courage to stand up to its obligations. Sports are meant to unite people and the current global sentiments against Qatar hosting the World Cup will only promote negative goodwill towards the event.

FIFA had responsibility to monitor preparations for the World Cup in Qatar and it failed so early. If the media didn’t highlight the issue, FIFA might never have taken notice. Thus, the right thing for FIFA is to make up for its failure because there is much more at stake than its economic interests or its ties with the Qatari Government. It’s still not late and FIFA may even enhance its reputation if it strips Qatar of the hosting right.

Essay: For the first time, I won’t be tuning in to the FIFA World Cup

Starting Sunday, the most talented soccer players will travel to Qatar to compete in the world’s most-watched sporting event – the FIFA World Cup. And while the United States is still relatively new to soccer, anticipation is at an all-time high with a hopeful new generation led by players Christian Pulisic and Brenden Aaronson representing the country. This year’s World Cup is especially meaningful to me because a series of legends I grew up watching in Germany are ready to retire, including Thomas Müller, Lionel Messi and Karim Benzema. Watching the World Cup is usually never out of the question for me, but for the first time, I won’t be tuning in.

After FIFA selected Qatar as the host back in 2010, U.S. federal prosecutors charged and arrested about two dozen FIFA officials in 2015 for arranging payments to secure Qatar’s 2022 World Cup bid . Even Sepp Blatter, the former president of FIFA who resigned in 2015 over charges of criminal mismanagement, acknowledged the organization’s mishandling in assigning the World Cup to Qatar in 2014 because of “social considerations” and “human rights” concerns. Qatar’s unfair and inhumane treatment of migrant workers is reflective of the overall corruption in the FIFA organization, overshadowing the joys of this event and exposing the true cost of this so-called “beautiful game.”

The 2022 World Cup was nearly entirely built on the exploitation of South Asian, low-income and male migrant workers . Thirty thousand workers were recruited for the World Cup alone – all former subjects of the now-outlawed Kafala system. The system requires migrant workers to have a sponsor, oftentimes European or American corporations who exploited Qatar’s callousness and withheld workers’ passports to keep them from leaving the country.

At least 6,500 estimated workers died building the Qatar World Cup stadium, mostly from heatstroke while working 12 hours a day, seven days a week sometimes without drinking water. If fans held a minute of silence for each of those who died, they would have to remain quiet for the entirety of each of the tournament’s 64 games. When asked about these deaths, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said , “the workers have gained dignity and pride” because of the minor labor reforms their deaths brought to Qatar. While it is one thing to minimize the role FIFA played in these deaths, sarcastically labeling their deaths as dignifying speaks to FIFA’s general disregard for human rights and commitment to sweeping issues under the rug.

Qatar also outlaws all same sex-relations and punishes sexual acts between men as sodomy with up to three years of imprisonment, a law discouraging  fans, journalists, sports agents, sponsor representatives and more from attending due to their sexual orientation. Ten team captains from countries including the Netherlands and Germany will wear pride armbands to raise awareness about the mistreatment of the LGBTQ+ community in the country, but because FIFA has not yet approved them, they will bear colors duller and nontraditional compared to the iconic rainbow pride colors to fit with organization regulations. FIFA also  vowed to keep politics out of soccer, proving that this form of activism is simply performative.

Western countries have voiced their outrage over Qatar’s human rights abuses after conveniently ignoring the state of basic civil liberties in other World Cup host countries in past years. When Brazil hosted the tournament in 2014, there was little protest over the forced removal of hundreds of thousands of people from their homes to make way for stadiums. Instead, World Cup fans pointed to Brazil’s general passion for the sport to justify their support. Similarly, when Russia hosted the tournament in 2018 while bombing Syria and annexing parts of the Ukraine in 2014, protests were scarce. But people in countries like France are boycotting this year’s event, the first World Cup to be held in the Middle East. And while France is not wrong to question Qatar for its human rights violations, Qataris are asking when France – where islamophobia is on the rise – will begin to defend the human rights of the asylum seekers from Africa and the Middle East on its very own shores or when it will end its exploitation of former colonies.

Granted, some believe that hosting the World Cup in Qatar has led the country to implement a minimum wage and abolish the Kafala system due to international attention and pressure from other countries. But the fear remains that such reforms are only a result of international attention, not a long-term commitment to progress. And the wealth of Qatar and other countries in the Persian Gulf continue to fund popular football clubs like Manchester City and Bayern Munich, showing how wealth still corrupts football on the world stage despite small efforts to bring reform to Qatar.

A boycott at this point will likely not change the fact that Qatar will host the 2022 World Cup – it certainly won’t bring back the lives lost in the building of the stadiums. But dissociating from brands sponsoring the World Cup, avoiding broadcasters charging subscription fees for the matches and not buying official merchandise are some of the many ways to truly change the way FIFA plans its renowned tournaments. Under even the slightest threat of reduced fan revenues, FIFA may pay more attention to such issues in the future.

What defines the World Cup are the communal events it creates for friends to watch the games and enjoy the suspense, arguments and joy all at once together. That can still be found elsewhere. You can hit bars, play pool, do trivia or watch many other sporting events – but the 2022 World Cup shouldn’t be one of them. Come late November, this tournament I’ve grown up loving won’t have my support.

The World Cup Essay

  • 5 Works Cited

It happens once every four years, 32 countries, 352 players, 150 staff and millions of fans. That is the World Cup, thirty two nations will come together as one to support their country, tears will be shed, hearts will be broken, and spirits will be lifted as the nations battle it out for the trophy. The World Cup is truly the biggest sporting event in the world, not only by the fact that it has the most viewers, but also by the amount of money put towards hosting the match stadiums, ticket purchases, and merchandise purchases. According to The Fédération Internationale de Football Association A.K.A FIFA , the World Cup in 2010 hosted in South Africa had in-home television coverage of the competition reached above 3.2 billion! That is …show more content…

(Jerrad Peters) Some can argue that this is too much money being spent on useless investments when you could put towards all that money into helping out Brazils economy. A massive amount of money is spent just on this solo event, but this event is expected to boost Brazil’s economy by $90 billion, Not only that, but there are already 3.6 million jobs both short term and long term the competition is expected to generate. (Zimbalist) That is identical to the number of jobs the Olympics has created. This is not just entertainment; this can benefit Brazil in many ways. There is one thing you can say about the World cup that you cannot compare with other sporting events, and that is the amount of passion put in towards the game, the emotion, and the joy. “The World Cup brings together not just 11 soccer players from one nation as a team, not just a country in support of their side, not just 32 nations, not just hundreds of thousands of fans in stadiums across South Africa. The World Cup brings together the world.” (Farzard Mashoood) June 12, 2009 it was Ivory Coast first time ever qualifying for the world cup. It was the countries first time ever going to the games, somehow in the middle of a bloody civil war they found a reason to put down their guns. When all chaos was at loose, when all hell was raining down, when all peace seemed inevitable somehow this simple event was enough for them to put aside their differences

What Does Soccer Mean To Me Essay

Since 1863 when the first ever professional soccer game was played in London, soccer has become the most played and watched sport throughout the world. The game is played by two teams with eleven players on each side. Each team has a goalkeeper, who is the only player on the field able to use their hands. A game lasts ninety minutes with the objective of kicking the ball into the other team's net, and the winner is whoever scores the most goals. Soccer Community Description Of Soccer Essay

Soccer consists of many important text and lexis, the first being the rulebook for soccer. It consists of how to play soccer, what you can and cannot do during a game, and the setup for the team: 11 players on the field, 2 teams, 3-4 referees, and as many backup players on the bench. The importance of this text is how the lexis is incorporated into literacy. The goal of the rulebook is to guide a new player on how to play the game, but most importantly it will build how they interpret the game and how those interpretation of the rules spread into their life. Players learn how to be more perceptive of what is happening around them and this helps to stimulate their brains. But how do players perceive what going on on the field? They read a playbook. Playbooks contain names and descriptions of many common and intricate soccer plays. This may consist of: bicycle kicks- a player throwing both feet in the air as a ball is approaching on the fly, while moving the legs with a pedaling motion to kick the ball in the opposite direction to which the player is facing, with the player usually ending up sprawled on the ground, chip- kicking the ball right over the goalies head, or volley- strike or kick (the ball) before it touches the ground. These types of plays help players connect their minds with the ball, building their knowledge and eventually, literacy. The last important text is motivating speeches. These are so important because they help

Narrative Essay About Soccer

Ever since I could remember, I have always had love for the game of soccer ever since I first laid eyes on the sport. As a kid, I would spend countless hours in the backyard by myself; I would juggle, kick around the ball and doing drills. When I wasn't in the yard pretending to be Lionel Messi I would watch Ronaldinho videos on Youtube dreaming I will one day play against him. Call me crazy, but I was addicted, even as a young boy, to the beautiful sport itself, soccer.

The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ represented a large part of FIFA’s work throughout 2022 – with groundbreaking firsts not only taking place on the pitches in Qatar, but in the stands too.

Positively impacting society through the power of football is a key goal in The Vision 2020-2023. Throughout the past 12 months, FIFA has played an active role in improving matters in a wide range of sustainability, anti-discrimination and safeguarding initiatives.

Delivery of the Sustainability Strategy in Qatar

The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ was a game changer in terms of organising a sustainable tournament. As well as there being no need for internal air travel, innovations that will have a lasting influence on the way similar events are planned and delivered in the future were everywhere to be seen in Qatar.

For example, a dedicated programme managed stadium energy and water impacts through efficient design, construction and operations.

All stadiums were 30% more energy efficient and consumed less water than international benchmarks.

Recycled water vapour from cooling systems in stadiums was used to irrigate the surrounding stadium landscape.

90% of temporary diesel generators were replaced by electric sub- stations providing greener grid power and reducing air pollution.

All five energy centres at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums had GSAS Seasonal Energy Efficiency certification.

In addition to no internal air travel, the state-of-the-art metro, a fleet of 311 eco-friendly hybrid and electric vehicles and ten electric buses were provided by sponsors Hyundai and Kia for use as ground transport for teams, officials and VIPs at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. This marked the first time that electric vehicles were deployed in such numbers to service event organisers, a precedent which is sure to be followed as FIFA continues to emphasise the need for clean mobility.

The ecological imperative to avoid, reduce, re-use and recycle was a defining policy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 from the early planning stages, reflecting the organisers’ leadership and commitment to divert all tournament waste from landfill, including: • Tournament-wide recycling of plastic, aluminium, cardboard, paper and glass and composting of waste food and compostable tableware at all stadiums, training camps and other official sites. • All uniforms for workforce staff and 20,000 volunteers were made from recycled materials and distributed in bags converted from signage and stadium dressing from previous events. • Local charity Hifz Al Naema redistributed leftover food from stadiums and events to people in need. Inclusivity was also high on the agenda when it came to delivering the sustainability promises made. Not only was this edition the most sustainable in tournament history, it was also the most accessible. • Mobility assistance, accessible transport, parking, facilities and five ticket types for people with disabilities and people with limited mobility. • Audio-descriptive commentary in English, and for the first time Arabic, for blind and partially sighted people to enjoy matches in the live stadium atmosphere. • For the first time at a FIFA World Cup™, sensory rooms for people with sensory access requirements to allow them to attend a match without becoming overwhelmed by the sounds and stimuli of matchday.

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ Sustainability Strategy launched

In September 2022, FIFA published the sustainability strategy for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™. The commitments it includes are aligned with FIFA’s long-standing sustainability framework and ambitions, as well as with the social, economic and environmental priorities in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

The actions and measures for the tournament will cover the key topics of accessibility, safeguarding, human rights, workers’ rights, gender equality, health, climate action, waste minimisation, green buildings and procurement.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ is a co-hosted tournament and recognises the unique stories and cultures of First Nations people in Australia, and Māori as mana whenua in Aotearoa New Zealand. In Australia, the organisers acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the Lands and pay respect to Elders, past, present and future. In Aotearoa New Zealand, the organisers acknowledge Māori as tangata whenua and te tiriti o waitangi partners.

Key pillars of the Strategy

Accessible venues

An accessible event for disabled people and people with limited mobility across tournament site infrastructure, overlay and services.

Human rights and workers’ rights

Proper policies, procedures, grievance mechanisms and training programmes will all be in place to identify and address negative impacts and structural discrimination.

Safeguard and protect

Ensure smooth engagement and collaboration with the local safeguarding stakeholders in the host countries and Host Cities.

Minimise waste

Avoid and reduce waste as per the FIFA Sustainable Sourcing Code and all other relevant standards.

Develop women’s football

Promote gender equality and equity

Identify key issues affecting women and girls in the host countries and region and develop joint initiatives with key partners.

Reduce climate impact

Estimate and reduce the competition’s greenhouse gas emissions, mitigate emissions, and use the platform to education fans on climate change.

Foster more sustainable buildings

Promote sustainable building design, construction and operations of event-related venues.

Ensure sustainable procurement

Establish and apply a sustainable procurement policy and sourcing code across the competition.

Human rights − key focus for FIFA World Cup 2026™

Following the announcement of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Host Cities in June 2022, FIFA also published its evaluation reports for each of the cities selected to stage matches during the 23rd edition of the tournament. FIFA is committed to ensuring that the tournament has a positive and lasting impact. Human rights have been a key consideration from the outset. FIFA’s new human rights requirements for tournaments, which were developed in consultation with a wide range of stakeholders and with the technical support of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, were implemented for the first time for a major event during the bidding process for the FIFA World Cup in 2026. As part of the bidding process, candidate host countries and host cities were required to commit, amongst other things, to their obligations under the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and to develop respective strategies. Over the past two years, human rights have also featured in the host city selection process. FIFA required candidate host cities to engage with local stakeholders and develop detailed human rights plans.

Anti-discrimination measures at the FIFA World Cup™

Discrimination – in all its possible forms and expressions – is one of the most common forms of human rights violations and abuse. It affects millions of people every day, stifling opportunities, harming physical and mental health, wasting human talent and accentuating social tensions and inequalities. Anti-discrimination has been a core principle in the implementation of new measures to transform FIFA since 2016. A policy of zero tolerance towards racism and discrimination was incorporated into the FIFA Disciplinary Code in 2019, and FIFA has introduced a monitoring system to report incidents of discrimination at matches in FIFA competitions. Guidance has been provided for the 211 member associations, supported by the principles outlined in the FIFA Statutes (article 4). At the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and in accordance with this statutory commitment, a vast number of measures were planned, delivered and implemented in Qatar.

Procedures for discriminatory incidents implemented at all matches

All FIFA match officials received subject-specific training

Proactive anti-discrimination message displayed before every match

Reactive stadium announcement initiated for the first time in FIFA World Cup history

Three-step procedure in place

Anti-discrimination monitoring system

36 fully trained match observers worked throughout the tournament

Risk assessment for each match shared with relevant FIFA match officials and security workforce

Ten incidents at group stage reported to the secretariat of FIFA Disciplinary Committee (full numbers of reports to follow after the tournament)

Assessors checking 374 pre-applied flags and banners and more than 10,000 flags, banners and other fan items at the gates and in the stadium bowl at each match

Workforce training

Cultural sensitivity workshop for FIFA employees delivered

Workshop for FIFA employees delivered

All relevant safety and security workforce at venues received an anti-discrimination and cross-cultural training element

All volunteers received training element

FIFA joins forces with World Trade Organization to further economic inclusion

In September 2022, FIFA joined forces with the World Trade Organization (WTO) to look at ways of using football to promote economic inclusion, particularly in the developing world.

The partnership is established in a memorandum of understanding signed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala where the two sides agreed to collaborate by exchanging views on their respective activities and by preparing and implementing common strategies and projects.

“ We believe that there is still more than football can do, especially for the youth in the developing world. ”

The two organisations committed to work together to analyse the economic impact of football and its role in unlocking global economic growth potential and will explore options for the development of capacity-building activities that support the use of football as a tool for women’s economic empowerment.

“FIFA redistributes its revenue among our 211 member associations to help them develop football in their countries by notably investing in infrastructure, facilities, competitions, refereeing and coaching,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“Yet, we believe that there is still more than football can do, especially for the youth in the developing world. This important partnership can help us find ways of ensuring that football can further promote sustainable development for everyone to benefit from the global football economy.”

FIFA’s safeguarding commitment continues

In 2022, FIFA Guardians™ Safeguarding in Sport Diploma celebrated reaching nearly 5,000 learners, since its launch – together with the Open University – in 2021. FIFA is committed to bringing about child protection at all levels of football and, to that end, the FIFA Guardians™ Safeguarding in Sport Diploma provides an educational pathway not only enhances the protection of children, but also that of other at-risk groups, such as young elite players, women, LGBT players and people with disabilities, against all forms of harassment, abuse and exploitation.

For the first online course, launched on 28 January 2021, more than 3,000 digital learners registered from member associations, confederations, regional associations and from the football family in general.

Thanks to the webinars and other educational resources made available to them, learners from member associations were able to become familiar with the tasks and various responsibilities involved in the role of a safeguarding professional in football.

New safeguarding courses delivered

In May and December 2022 respectively, courses three – Developing your Safeguarding Effectiveness-; four –Embedding Safeguarding Practice-; and five –Promoting Wider Safeguarding Change- were launched, completing the full suite of courses.

This online learning content was complemented by two additional webinars on how Member Associations and clubs can collaborate to strengthen safeguarding processes and procedures in February 2022, ending the year discussing Safeguarding in Competition Time (November).

FIFA teams up with leading UK university

In April 2022, FIFA entered into a formal multi-year partnership with the School of Sport, Exercise, and Health Sciences of Loughborough University to conduct an independent evaluation of the impact of its FIFA Guardians programme on the 211 member associations.

Key stakeholder relationships developed

In 2022, active engagement with external stakeholders continued to advocate for the enhancement of a safeguarding culture within football globally through among others, fruitful exchanges on this and other topics, during the visit at the Home of FIFA of a delegation of the ASEAN Committee in Bern (May 2022) and a delegation of Members of the European Parliament and members of the European Parliament Sports Group (July 2022).

FIFA's New 32-Team Club World Cup: Format Changes & Teams Qualified

  • Manchester City and Chelsea will be present at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Liverpool and Manchester United will miss out.
  • Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have qualified automatically due to their Champions League triumphs, while others have also secured spots based on UEFA coefficient points.
  • Arsenal still have a chance to enter the tournament by winning the 2023/24 Champions League, joining Barcelona, RB Leipzig, and Juventus as contenders for the remaining European slots.

The first nine European teams to take part in a newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 have been revealed and some very big names miss out. 32 teams will participate in the tournament in total, with two teams from each nation being allowed to enter.

There will be 12 European clubs, six South American teams, four clubs from each of Asia, Africa and America, one team from Oceania and a final spot for a club from the host nation - which will be the USA.

This has led to a couple of Premier League giants being ruled out of the tournament completely. While only ninr teams have been confirmed as things stand, there are sure to be some other big clubs that miss out on the new competition that will be played every four years. But which Premier League clubs are certain to miss out on the Club World Cup in 2025, and which teams still have a chance to make it based on the 2023/24 Champions League ?

Manchester City and Chelsea Will Represent the Premier League

Liverpool and manchester united miss out.

Liverpool and Manchester United are to miss out on a newly-formatted tournament. Despite being known as the two biggest clubs in the country, the two juggernauts will miss out on the tournament with only two clubs from each nation permitted entry, as previously mentioned.

Chelsea and Manchester City are the two Premier League clubs that will make it into the competition. This is due to the fact that Pep Guardiola's treble-winning side from last season, and Thomas Tuchel's triumphant Blues in 2021 both lifted the Champions League in a dedicated period from 2020 that would see the winners of the biggest European trophy around automatically qualify.

The elephant in the room when discussing England's biggest clubs is Arsenal . The Gunners are still in with a chance of being the third English team to gain entry. To do so, Mikel Arteta's side will have the task of winning the 2023/24 Champions League. This makes it a very difficult task, but not an impossible one. Man United's early exit from European competition and Liverpool's failure to qualify for this season's Champions League are the reasons behind their definite exclusions.

The 10 best players in the 2023/24 Champions League based on stats

The other six european clubs announced for the club world cup, dortmund dortmund the latest to qualify.

Real Madrid also lifted the Champions League trophy in the specified years, meaning the Spanish giants gain automatic qualification. It is fitting that the most successful clubs in European history will be at the big tournament.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Real Madrid had won the Club World Cup more than any other team, lifting the trophy on five occasions.

The remaining spots are decided by the highest-ranking teams in terms of UEFA coefficient points. This means that Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Porto, and Benfica are the other five teams to have sealed a place in the Club World Cup.

Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig were both vying for the ninth spot in the tournament but after the latter were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in March 2024, this left Dortmund as the only remaining Bundesliga outfit (beyond the already qualified Bayern Munich) in the competition. Leipzig needed to go as far as the semi-finals to have a chance of overtaking Dortmund in the UEFA four-year rankings.

Barcelona and Juventus are among the names in contention to complete the final four European slots available. Arsenal will take one of these places should they go all the way in the Champions League.

The current iteration of the FIFA Club World Cup came to an end in December 2023. Manchester City were the European representative in the competition. As the reigning European champions. Guardiola's men entered at the semi-final stage, beating Urawa Reds and then Fluminese to lift the trophy .

The money Man City will earn if they win the Club World Cup

How the tournament will work, no third-place play-off.

In a similar fashion to the Champions League format that fans will be familiar with, the Club World Cup will have a group stage that will be composed of eight groups of four teams. The top two teams from each group will then progress to the knockout rounds of the competition.

There is a significant difference from the top European competition, however, as there will be no double-legged games in the knockout rounds. A single match will decide who moves into the next round.

Unlike in the FIFA World Cup, no third-place play-off will be played. It will be interesting to see how the first version of the tournament plays out in 2025.
