phd salaries in austria

Based on a full-time position, doctoral students in austria receive a gross annual salary of 3,277.30 euros. it should be noted that an employment relationship often has a job scope of only 30 hours per week or less..

  • The pay scale structure for the salary of scientists is transparently regulated in Austria. If a doctoral student is a scientific employee at a state university, his or her salary is automatically regulated by the collective agreement for scientific university staff.
  • In the salary scheme of the collective agreement for scientific university staff, the subdivision is made into different salary groups - A1, A2, B1, B2 and C. Doctoral students are located in the B1 salary group. Here, the gross monthly salary is 3,277.30 euros . The figures refer to an employment 40 hours / week. after three years of employment, the salary rises to 3,885.20 euros.
  • Not every doctoral student, however, is automatically also employed as a research assistant at a university. Many PhD students have to take care of the financing of their doctorate themselves. On the page of the University of Vienna you will find important information about funding programs. Since funding opportunities are limited, many doctoral students finance their dissertations through outside university employment.

Financing your Ph.D. study

The admission to the doctoral program does not imply that your Ph.D. studies are also fully funded because the resources of the project to which you are applying determine the amount of funds available for financing. Therefore, we encourage you to become well informed about your financing options before the start of your doctorate. However, our faculty do their absolute best to secure full funding for all their Ph.D. students.

If you sign your contract as a Ph.D. student with MedUni Vienna, you will be employed as a scientific employee and remunerated in accordance with the  collective agreement  for academic university staff (Level B1, equal to 30 hours per week). Projects funded by the FWF grant have their own funding regulations; please consult their  website  for more detailed information. Your supervisor can inform you about your contract and salary terms once you’ve reached a supervision agreement. To give you a better understanding of how much income you might need to live in Vienna, we recommend you to read  OeAD's article on living costs.

Health insurance and pension

Due to your employment in Austria, you are automatically covered with health insurance and a pension.  Austria has a good and safe health system to which you have full access with your e-card . There is also the option to co-insure your partner and children if necessary.

If you have no employment contract, it is your responsibility to ensure you are covered by  health insurance.

Financial support for PhD students and interns is a key priority for ISTA.

Status of our students.

PhD students are employed by ISTA . Prior to the Qualifying Exam , their activities consist of coursework, rotation projects within research groups, and preparation for the Qualifying Exam. Once the students have successfully passed the Qualifying Exam, they perform research on their PhD thesis project within one or more research groups, and they may assist in teaching activities.

All our PhD students receive internationally competitive salaries and full social security coverage. Students also receive  financial support  to attend scientific conferences and workshops during their studies.

Scientific interns are employed by ISTA. They are enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in good standing at a degree granting institution (other than ISTA) while performing a research project within a research group of ISTA for a period of up to 1 year.

ISTerns receive a monthly compensation. The ISTernship program is developed in cooperation with the OeAD, the Austrian Agency for International Cooperation in Education and Research. The OeAD handles the scholarship payments for a period of up to 3 months between May 15 and September 15.

PhD student salaries depend on whether the student is holding a bachelor’s or a master’s degree at the time of admission. When students pass their Qualifying Exam (about 1.5 years into their degree), they receive a salary raise. Gross salaries in the year 2023 for PhD students range – dependent on the criteria above – from 2471 EUR/month to 3003 EUR/month (paid 14 times a year: once per month plus double payments in June and November).

ISTA offers scientific interns a minimum salary of EUR 1,184 gross per month.

Admission Costs and Tuition Fees

ISTA does not charge any tuition fees . No application fee is required to apply to our PhD and internship programs.

Research Funding and Awards

In all fields of research, funding is of paramount importance to sustain the resources needed by scientists. ISTA relies on diverse funding sources to support all its researchers.

The Grant Office is there to support applicants wishing to apply for external funding. PhD students at ISTA are no exception since it is best to acquire grant writing skills early on in one’s scientific career. For academic job applications, competitive peer-reviewed fellowships can be a powerful indicator that 1) you’re a scientist worth investing in, and 2) that your research projects are of the highest quality.

Fellowships which have been awarded to PhD students and interns at ISTA include:

  • DOC fellowships from the Austrian Academy of Science
  • Böhringer Ingelheim Foundation fellowships
  • IBM PhD Fellowship
  • FEMTech Stipends of the FFG, and
  • ISTernships (internally funded).

Students can also be part of larger projects within their research groups. ISTA has been particularly successful in receiving a large number of prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grants which reward innovative projects for their research excellence.

In addition, students may be involved in projects funded by more local sources such as:

  • the Austrian Science Fund (FWF)
  • the Land Niederösterreich (NFB)

The opportunity to network with other institutions is one of the highlights of the cooperative grants currently running at ISTA. These bring together eminent scientists (and sometimes companies) from across Europe and beyond to work on challenges in a specific field. They can also be specifically aimed at PhD student training, as is the case with:

  • Doktoratskollegs from the FWF
  • Initial Training Networks (ITN) from the European Commission

All scientists at ISTA are supported by the Grant Office in all matters related to external funding : from application, implementation, to reporting to the relevant funding organizations.

Postdocs in Austria Post-doctorate fellowships in Austria for foreigners

In Austria, universities and research institutions have strict requirements and high expectations for postdoc fellowships. This article will give you an insight into postdoc fellowships in Austria, as well as what you may expect to receive in terms of salary and financial remuneration.

Stairs metaphor postdoc in Austria

A brief introduction to postdoc fellowships in Austria

Getting a postdoc position, career prospects, postdocs in austria: salaries.

Austria is home to many respected and prestigious research institutions and universities. This includes the University of Graz, TU Wien and the University of Vienna.

Post-doctoral studies are the phase between a doctorate and a professorship. This is a qualification phase, during which postdocs delve deeper into their specialist areas. It does depend on the institution, but positions are generally between two and three years in length but can be up to four. Candidates are selected by the head of the research group – generally the professor or assistant professor and is subjected to sufficient funds. Applications are on a continuous basis.

Entry into such programmes are highly sought after and therefore competitive. However, there are a growing number of courses with institutions in Austria, particularly with science institutions, so there is a good chance of gaining a position with the relevant academic qualification.

Post-doctorate studies are conducted on specific topics. It depends on the course, but positions may also come attached with teaching duties.

Again, it does depend on the institution, as each varies its requirements for entry, but the emphasis on recruitment is based on the highest standard of doctorate previously achieved.

Outside of academic success, universities and institutions place an emphasis on so-called ‘soft skills’. These can be obvious personality traits such as ambition or enthusiasm; spending time abroad and a good grasp of a foreign language, particularly English, is seen as desirable. In addition, knowledge of the German language would be a plus.

Applicants must check the eligibility requirements for post-doctorate positions if coming from abroad. While this varies depending on the institution, applicants may be asked to fulfil or commit to varying different requirements. It is not unusual to commit to relocating to Austria for the period of appointment. Some institutions ask that candidates have previously lived in Austria, and some are only eligible if they have lived in the country for a set period.

It is important to take note of job announcements such as those listed on academics.com . These should be read carefully and you should ask yourself how the role that interests you fits into your research career. The tasks and duties must be appropriate to what you may want to do. What requirements do you feel you meet – and do not meet?

Applicants are frequently asked for their list of publications, so be prepared to cite examples of your work. Applicants are also asked to provide a “motivation” letter – explaining why you are applying, what your ambitions are and why the institution to which you are applying appeals.

It would not be unusual for the institution to ask to see a copy of the thesis from your highest obtained degree.

In a survey taken by Viennese post-doctorates the following was found:

  • 50 per cent of post-doctorates are forced to leave academia
  • 30 per cent leave voluntarily
  • 19 per cent think they can get a job outside academia

There was found to be a gender bias, with female postdocs being less confident in their career options. More females had been unemployed and for longer when compared to males. There was found to be limited social mobility due to the social background of academics. Work/life balance made a career in academia for women more difficult, with the prospect of starting a family.

Having said this, the general view is more positive. Many institutions are keen to highlight a variety of family services on offer, to attract candidates of the highest calibre. On-site day care for children is not uncommon. Equally, a variety of accommodation, including apartments and guesthouses can be offered on campus.

Career paths and the challenges around these positions are highly individual for each scientist and researcher and there is no one standard route for the academic.

Typically, as part of your post-doctoral studies in Austria, you will be offered four areas as part of your modules. There is a heavy emphasis on self-determination when it comes to study.

With our Job-Mail, you will receive suitable job ads as well as interesting content matching your search profile  on a weekly basis.

Candidates for postdoc fellowships are often highly qualified and have often recently completed a PhD or equivalent qualification.

Many postdocs are academic staff working at universities or at research institutions. Their salary falls within the job group of A2, according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement of sections 98 and 99 of the 2002 Universities Act.

The gross monthly pay of the A2 salary group is typically in the range of an entry-level post-doctoral graduate. Under law the salary amounts to a maximum of €3,772.60. The figure offered varies from institution to institution, but this is a typical offer.

For positions such as senior post-doctorate level, monthly gross salaries can expect to be even higher, and salaries of around €4,080 not uncommon. The maximum allowed under this seniority is €4,388.70 under article 27 of the 2002 Universities Act.

Permanent staff members of institutions in this band grade can expect that figure to increase over time.

Grants, whilst available, are very highly targeted and in different academic fields. Grants are primarily aimed at foreign students to aid and assist their stay in Austria. They are often targeted at people from specific countries and are financed either by the state, the institution, a foreign government, or a mixture of these income streams. A comprehensive guide for available grants can be found here .

Remarks about the salary of PhD students in Germany and the UK

Regarding the table above, there are a few remarks. Germany does not have a minimum salary for PhD students, so they could do their PhD without a salary. Furthermore, if PhD students receive a stipend or scholarship, the numbers might be very different (generally lower than the salaries listed above). Throughout the UK, the values in the table represent the annual stipend of PhD students. Since this is a stipend, the student does not pay any taxes on it, so we can also call it after-tax income. The last thing to note is that the maximum value is more reserved for exceptional cases (especially in Switzerland). We recommend you read the salary pages of each country if you want to know the exact salary allocation and the details.

The following text has been automatically translated! How to use the practical gross-net calculator for Austria 2023: Enter your income in the top line. You can specify this either as a monthly or annual amount. Indicate whether this amount is gross or net. At the end you will see a net income when entering gross. If you change the specification to net, the calculator carries out a reverse calculation process (net gross calculator). No further information is required for a simple calculation of your gross or net income, provided you are in the "Employee" contribution group. Otherwise select "worker", "pensioner" (ASVG/civil servants) or "apprentice". You want a more precise result? For an accurate result, you can tailor the calculator to your personal situation with additional information. The gross-net calculator also includes your family circumstances in the calculation. In the second line of additional information, indicate whether the single-earner or single-parent tax credit is to be applied. For the family bonus+, simply enter the number of children for whom you receive family allowance (for children up to 17 or from 18 years of age). In the case of "commuter allowance", the tax deduction on travel expenses is determined. The small commuter flat rate here means a distance of 20 kilometers or more, which can be easily covered by public transport. The large commuter flat rate applies from a distance of 2 kilometers or more, which has no or insufficient public transport connections. Enter the exact number of your commuter kilometers below. If the costs of an Öffi ticket (weekly, monthly or annual ticket for public transport) are covered in whole or in part by the employer, please state this. Normal working hours must be entered to calculate the hourly wage (normal hour or hour of attendance). The field "benefits in kind" requires information on benefits in kind that you as an employee receive from the employer. It is best to ask your employer which of your benefits in kind are subject to income tax. Under "Exemption amount", enter which part of your income is tax-free. With the special payments, you can choose whether the holiday bonus or the Christmas bonus should be calculated. In addition, under "Other" (special payments), you can specify a further reference, e.g. 15th salary, balance sheet allowance, bonus, anniversary bonus, bonus, .... This remuneration is taxed taking into account the sixth of the year. Finally, the gross-net calculator needs information about the federal state and the tax year. The result, with all the details on income tax, social security and special payments, also provides you with information on employer costs. If you would like the employer costs to be calculated, tick the "Display non-wage labor costs" box. Then click on "Calculate" at the end of the form to start the calculation process and display your personal net or gross income.
