It may seem counter intuitive to have weight gain goals but there are often very legitimate reasons for establishing them. Weight gain goals are not just about putting on more pounds but putting on the right kind of pounds for fitness enthusiasts meaning lean body mass. This does not happen overnight and often requires a great amount of dedication and determination. The science behind weight gain goals is to intake more calories than you expend. Effective Weight Gain

Weight gain is not just about gaining weight but gaining the right kind of weight. Eating the rights foods with the right kinds of protein and the healthy kinds of fat is highly important. Also, maintaining your exercise regime is incredibly important. One should not sacrifice muscle mass or cardiovascular strength in efforts to reduce caloric expenditure.

To effectively gain weight, meals should be predetermined and measured so one can gauge a near exact amount of calories being consumed. Much like weight loss goals , weight gain goals is a science and requires planning and preparation. Timelines should be defined and weight gain should be measured regularly.

Weight Gain for Physical Appearance

Whether you are a female or a male that is underweight, you have probably been ridiculed sometime in your life about being skinny. Society has imbued an image of what we should all look like and this is what drives the goal of weight gain for those that are deemed underweight. Often this is not just measured by the actual weight of the individual but how the individual looks. For this kind of weight gain, a large amount of focus is put on increasing quality proteins and quality fats as well as visual results.

Weight Gain for Health Reasons

A doctor prescribed weight gain program can be established if the doctor feels their patient is underweight. One of the more frequent reasons for this is with pregnant women who are urged to gain weight during pregnancy to ensure the baby develops properly. See " fats " for more information about gaining weight while still eating healthy. This kind of weight gain is measured by stepping on the scale, not from a visual of one's bodily appearance.

Having fat reserves is also a healthier way to live because the body is able to better regulate chemicals and hormones being released.

When in Doubt, Aim Higher: What I Wish I’d Known About Target Weights in Recovery

I wish I’d been given a higher weight goal at the start of recovery. 

If you’d told me five years ago that I’d someday write that sentence, I would have laughed in disbelief. 

Like most patients with restrictive eating disorders, my recovery from anorexia was marked by fear, anxiety, and resistance to the very idea of weight gain. My personal mantra—reinforced by many doctors and dietitians—was, “Gain as little as possible to restore basic physical function.” 

In the years since my recovery (2015-18, the majority of my time in college), numerous studies and articles have addressed the nuances of target weights in illuminating, empowering ways. Some points of emerging consensus:

  • Set a weight minimum, not a maximum . A wide range is better than a single number. 
  • Focus on “ state, not weight ”: a person’s mental and emotional wellbeing are just as vital as physical markers when measuring recovery. 
  • Weight goals must be highly individualized , cognizant of a patient’s lifetime growth curves , family history, body type, and size-inclusive definitions of “health.” 
  • In present treatment, weight goals are consistently set too low for full psychological recovery . The farther below their ideal body weight a patient remains, the greater the risk of relapse . 

Each time I read these articles, I find myself deeply moved, torn between tears of frustration, gratitude, and determination. 

Frustration about the years that I lingered at the minimum BMI threshold, trying to will my way to recovery without the physical foundation. 

Gratitude that eventually, thanks to articles, blogs, and better-informed providers, I broke through years of stasis and finally gained the weight my body needs. 

Determination to ensure that no one stays trapped in limbo like I did, resigned to a life of mental anguish in a partly-recovered body, when science and personal experience repeatedly show that full recovery may lie only a few extra pounds away. 

My goal isn’t to summarize the current recommendations on target weight ranges, which others ( Eva Musby , Jennifer Gaudiani, Julie O’Toole ) do excellently. Instead, I want to speak to the inner experience of this topic—to show how and why I’ve changed from someone who insisted on gaining the bare minimum, to someone who advocates with total certainty, “When in doubt, set a higher target weight.” I write from my firsthand experience of four things: 

  • The immense cost, physical and psychological, of staying at a weight too low for my body;

      2. The unparalleled freedom, joy, and sustainability I find when I let my body settle in its own unique range;

      3. The narrow but paradigm-changing margin—just a handful of pounds, in many cases— that separates one state from the other; 

      4. And the vital role that parents play in inviting their loved one across this threshold, helping build bodies equipped to sustain a life of freedom rather than fear.  

When I’m recovered—eating consistently, moving for pleasure, maintaining the weight range that’s right for my body—I live in a different world than when I was ill. I like to think about it through a simple visual: a hill-and-valley diagram, with a little ball—me—travelling in between.

On the right side of the diagram, there’s the valley of full recovery. In this world, I feel comfortable in my body. I look in the mirror and observe the changes between my appearance now and my appearance in illness, and I greet this difference as a symbol of life and strength. I listen to cravings. I have no trouble cooking independently, traveling, going out for meals, eating desserts. All of the signals of my body—my cues for hunger, rest, or movement, my mental state and thought-patterns—are in tune with the goal of maintaining this healthy equilibrium. The valley of recovery is vivid and constant, a self-sustaining, holistic worldview. 

On the left side of the diagram—the valley of the eating disorder—the rules are completely different. In this state of energy deficit (long-term or short term, dramatic weight loss or not), I experience a basic distrust of my body, a rigidity that makes me regard any changes in weight, diet, or routine with paralyzing fear. I can’t trust my body’s signals, because my sensations of hunger and fullness, distorted by malnutrition, paradoxically push me to restrict even more . I’m unable to recognize the danger of what I’m doing; restriction feels comfortable, anxiety-quelling, habitual. This isn’t a choice or a weakness. It’s a biological fact, a result of the physiological and metabolic changes (genetically based) that happen to a brain and body when you take in less energy than you need. 

But here’s the tricky part, and the crucial thing to remember. A person in a state of energy deficit experiences their illness as the real, true, logically consistent way of things. From the valley of the eating disorder, anorexia’s biological and mental distortions feel just as “natural” and compelling to me as the healthy instincts that form my recovered world. And from the vantage point of illness, I can barely remember, much less act on, my recovered-world values. It’s impossible to sit in the valley of anorexia, inhabiting an underweight body, and truly envision or desire the valley of health on the other side. 

What does all of this have to do with target weight goals? Nearly everything. I’ve found that the single most important variable—the safeguard that separates the valley of recovery from the valley of illness—is maintaining the weight range that’s right for me. 

I didn’t realize this the first time through recovery. The process of finally reaching my body’s ideal weight zone—helped by an expert dietitian—was slow and painstaking. I couldn’t fully appreciate the mental and biological improvement as it was taking place. Instead, I learned about the value of staying in this higher weight zone later, through an experience of partial relapse. 

Some months ago, a perfect storm of factors—pressure from grad school, a move across the country, anxiety about covid-19—caused me to slip into patterns I thought I’d long left behind. A skipped snack here, a few extra miles of running there—nothing drastic, nothing intentional, just enough to fall subtly short of my energy needs. Before I realized it, one lost pound became several, and I slowly slipped out of the range where my body likes to stay. 

Luckily, I caught it quickly. Because I’d spent years in full recovery, I was able to notice something which, in earlier stages of healing, I couldn’t access: the striking difference in quality of life between illness and health. I became hyper-attuned to the incremental ways that my body and mind alter as my weight drops lower. A few pounds in, it suddenly felt more comfortable to be hungry than full. A meal that seemed normal two weeks ago looked huge and daunting. I couldn’t focus; my brain spun with calorie counts and exercise plans. When I’m in energy balance, I wake up every morning eager for breakfast. During my relapse, I wasn’t even interested in food. When I did eat, I got full quickly, and the sensation sent my mind in guilty spirals that seemed impossible to ignore.

 In short, within a few weeks of inadvertent weight loss, my body and mind slipped back to the valley of the eating disorder. The change was all-or-nothing. In this alternate state, anorexia’s rules dominated, leaving no room for the hard-earned values of my recovered world. And the central factor behind this shift in worldviews? A BMI point or two in the wrong direction. Merely a handful of crucial, life-changing pounds. 

I’m not the only one who’s had this experience. Many caregivers, describing a loved one’s descent into illness, marvel, “It was like a switch had been flipped.” Parents describe watching their children, flexible and boisterous one day, turn unrecognizably rigid and withdrawn within just a few weeks of undereating. Recent genetic science supports the notion of a “ metabolic tipping point ”—a critical threshold of energy intake and body weight—below which, for people with certain genes, the biological pull of restriction becomes nearly impossible to avoid. My experience of relapse, on the heels of a strong and long-held recovery, showed me just how dramatic and out-of-control this tipping point can feel.

This experience profoundly shaped my philosophy of target weight goals. It altered the advice I give to the parents and teenagers I mentor, and the practices I put in place to maintain my own recovery. 

First, I realized just how impossible it is to fully recover at a weight too low for one’s body—and how often professionals inadvertently give weight goals that condemn a patient to settle for less than full health. I don’t like using numbers (everyone’s recovering body is different), but I’ll do so loosely here, to make a point. 

When I first showed up for treatment in college, doctors and dietitians gave me a BMI goal of X—a single number, right on the lowest edge of “health.” When I reached that goal, life felt slightly better; my vital signs improved, my symptoms faded, I ate a little more. But now that I know my true metabolic threshold—now that I’ve felt, through my experience of relapse, the precise weight at which my eating-disorder-world melds into my recovered one—I see just how far off that first weight goal really was. For my body (like most bodies), a BMI of X falls squarely on the wrong side of the hill-and-valley diagram. For as long as I stayed there, I was fighting an uphill battle against my own biology, unable to see or desire true health. Continued weight gain—to X+2 BMI points, at the bare minimum—was the missing ingredient that put full recovery in the realm of possibility. 

Second, I see the importance of treating target weight as an iterative experiment, constantly asking whether the fullest holistic recovery has been reached. The low goal a doctor first gave stuck with me. It became a static ceiling, an absolute maximum, a number I used to resignedly accept how things were. “The scale says I’m technically healthy—clearly, I don’t need to eat any more,” I reasoned. The illusion that I’d “arrived” at recovery, then, kept me from seeking the help (professionals trained in eating disorders) and the changes (flexibility around food groups, less exercise, a shift to more intuitive eating) that I needed to experience the benefits of recovery with pleasure and pride. How much easier it would have been if my goal weight were flexible from the outset, wide enough to accommodate the vast range of choices and bodies that constitute “health”! 

Finally, I believe that an adequate “weight buffer” is an indispensable ingredient for sustained recovery. My relapse taught me that for my own body, the difference between health and illness can be quite a narrow margin, just a handful of pounds. The simplest solution? Don’t live so close to the boundary. Pick a weight that gives me some room for error, so that even through small perturbations—travel, stress, a stomach bug—I stay in the recovered zone. 

Once upon a time, I would have seen this buffer as unwelcome and unnecessary. (“Why go above the bare minimum? No one is forcing you!” anorexia liked to claim). Now, I have evidence to talk back. I’ve witnessed how discouraging it feels to re-enter the valley of illness, how wonderful recovery feels by contrast, and how difficult it is to fight your way back from relapse to health. I don’t want to spend my life re-living this struggle; I’d rather stand firmly in the valley of recovery. A few extra pounds in the right direction—unnoticeable to an outsider, but vital for my body—seems a small price to pay. 

Not everyone likes to hear this. At the suggestion of a higher weight goal, I’ve heard parents protest, “My child is already anxious enough! If they can’t accept their body at its current weight, how on Earth will they feel if they have to gain more?” I hear the weariness and discouragement (so natural—recovery is a marathon!), and the well-meaning desire to avoid further pain. 

To these worries, I say: remember the hill-and-valley diagram. Of course your child fears weight gain! They’re still in the valley of anorexia, subject to mental and physical symptoms that only re-nourishment can assuage! A person’s resistance to reaching a higher weight is strong evidence that that’s exactly what they need to do. For what it’s worth, I can say with total certainty that when (and only when) someone reaches their own recovered valley, the anxiety quiets, fades, and all but disappears. Weight gain unlocks a mindset that’s literally unimaginable until you arrive there. I couldn’t have foreseen it (and neither could my parents or my dietitian, in those months of rage and resentment and anxiety and distrust), but it’s true. Today, I have nothing but gratitude for those who pushed me to take this more difficult route. 

I write this to parents deliberately, because I see a profound invitation. You are the people who know your children best, who understand the gap between where they are now and the vision you hold for their future. You are the voices in the doctors’ and dietitians’ offices, in conference rooms and online forums, who are willing to push past the weight stigma that colors current treatment and advocate for individualized, inclusive definitions of health. 

Trust your intuition. Refuse to settle for the bare minimum. Don’t let anyone convince you that recovery is one-size-fits all, or that health can be measured by a single pre-determined number on a scale. 

I’m not a parent, but I know how it feels to see someone you care for trapped in stasis, unable to envision a life of greater pleasure or peace. I look at the teenagers I mentor— young people who are creative, sensitive, compassionate, and driven, whose challenges have wrought incredible maturity and depth—and I see extraordinary potential. I see their roadblocks and anxieties, yes—challenges I vividly remember. But I also see what they can’t quite glimpse yet: the radical freedom that’s waiting just around the corner, a few BMI points away. I think, “What would happen if you let your weight climb just a little bit higher? What new thresholds of liberation and joy and confidence could you unlock?” 

Consider it this way. The cost of weight gain is fleeting—a couple weeks or months of effort and anxiety, as you push past anorexia’s fears. The cost of never achieving full recovery is long-term, tragic, and profound. A few weeks of discomfort, or a lifetime stuck in limbo? Weight gain isn’t easy (believe me, I’ve been there), but I know which option I’ll always choose. 

Full recovery is possible—the return of your loved one, with all their pre-illness energy, their humor, hobbies, passions, and character traits (and many more markers of growth and selfhood that this journey of healing invites). If this hasn’t yet happened, consider that the thing that must yield is not your hope for full recovery, but the static, narrow number your loved one has been given, which may not be quite what their unique body needs to thrive.

His life and mood are great but he still serves himself portions that are too small for someone with ED genes. This is the most insightful and true article I have read, and I’ve read a lot. My D was AN for years. Always just eating enough and weighing enough for function. She stayed in school. But she was miserable. Now recovered it was only a handful of pounds different. People do notice. They say she looks gorgeous. She gets her period. She has a boyfriend. One of you asked about the idea of sharing this with your loved one in the process of recovery. Though this is a very individualized question (and though I’m not a professional, and you should certainly defer to your team!), I want to provide my two cents:

In my experience, the voice of an eating disorder is so loud– the rules of the “valley of illness” so rigid and strong– that any message that directly contradicts these voices can only be helpful. Likely, your loved one has a loud tape playing in their head that says, “Weight gain = bad and shameful. When in doubt, gain less.” When I heard professionals err on the side of a lower weight goal, I heard a subtle and unintentional reinforcement of these ED beliefs. What I needed to hear (and what, beneath the surface, I actually longed for) was a glimpse of a world-view radically different, freeing, and revolutionary. I needed people over and over again to remind me that there is a valley in which weight gain is life-saving, good, and worthy of celebration, and to give me permission to inhabit it–a counter-message proportional in strength and frequency to the ED voice in my mind. If you think this article will be an effective tool to deliver this message to your loved one, then yes– by all means share it! Even if they’re not in a place to believe it just yet, it may plant an important seed. Finally, throughout my recovery, I longed for information. I wanted to understand what was happening, physiologically and metabolically, in my body. (Even if I didn’t love the answer at first– a clear biological imperative to eat more!– I would rather have known than remain in the dark). So any article grounded in science, I’ve tried to do in this one, may be welcome as a way to assuage uncertainty and fear.

Thanks for this fantastic article. Our granddaughter has been given a minimum weight target by the hospital and a higher one from the specialized clinic. I now understand how important the higher one is. I also felt the descriptions of the valley and the opposite joy-filled recovery very helpful. I listened to your podcast on ED Matters 2 days ago and it has changed everything for our family. My daughter is 16 and we are now in our 4th year of battling anorexia. We have tried so many things and will continue to do so, but your podcast hit me and my husband like a ton of bricks. We shared both parts of your podcasts with our daughter’s therapist, doctor, and nutritionist. Our daughter continues to be in the valley of the illness and we have allowed her to continue her place on the cross country team and mountain biking team. We live in Colorado and wanted her to mentally have some release. We have asked her to put a pause on cardio and jump into recovery. We will share your podcast with her soon. Right now she is super angry and my husband and I are going to lean in and support her any way we can. Thank you for your inspiration and story. I know this is years after this comment was posted, and it’s kind of a shot in the dark to expect a response, but here goes nothing:

I’m a 17 year old who seems to have a lot in common with your daughter – one mountain biker to another :). I’ve always lived a very active lifestyle, which had to be put on hold in 2020 when I first was hospitalized with anorexia. Now, years later, I’m in a bit of a relapse. I’m not sure of my actual weight, just that I’m at a “normal” BMI and I’m still not allowed to partake in any of the exercise that I love so much. My doctors and parents want me to gain more, but the idea of gaining without doing any exercise scares me so badly. I just want to stay at this weight and keep doing the activities I love. I’ve said some horrible stuff out of anger to my parents lately in relation to the exercise ban. I desperately miss my activities and friends that I had through those activities. Things are looking really bad and I think this is the lowest I’ve been mentally since my initial diagnosis.

On this note, how did your daughter cope with the cut in exercise? Where/how is she now? I’m so so scared because it feels like I’ll never get better – and I guess I’m hoping that a story about someone who seems similar to myself will help me see the light on the other side of recovery (which to be dead honest, I don’t really want to do. I only want to be allowed to participate in biking and physical activity again).

Do you or your daughter have any advice for someone who wants to succeed and improve athletically? Right now my only motivation is just getting back onto my team, but I can’t help but feel total rage towards my parents and doctors for making me gain more than the minimum.

My 9-year-old son has ANR, and each time I think we are making progress, we have a “recovery setback.” I come to this post to remind myself that we are still climbing up the hill out of the disordered valley, as he is very close to being weight restored. I read this in early 2022 when I was ill and it made me furious. I insisted to my treatment team (who shared this with me) that it was different for me. I’d cycled from underweight to the bare minimum “x” for 6 years and felt that recovery wasn’t really realistic for me because I could not sustain it and felt so miserable at the supposed “healthy” minimum weight. Over the past few months I have surpassed the minimum x and re read the above and it rings more true than almost anything related to recovery that I’ve ever read. I wish there was a way to help those in the midst of struggle to see it. It’s really true. Higher than the minimum is better. The difference is so mentally significant.

I reached my goal weight, but I'm still not happy. What now?

What happens when you realize your goal weight was a just a silly number?

I don’t own a scale. I dieted enough times when I was younger to know that, for me, not having one is an act of self-care. Not fixating on a number: how freeing!

So when I stepped on the scale during my annual physical last year, I was seeing my recent weight loss quantified for the first time. At the beginning of the pandemic, I, like many, set out to shed some pounds by taking up running. (Believe me, this was not my first choice among quarantine activities; my “Vanderpump Rules” binge came to an end and so did my patience with puzzles.)

At the doctor’s office, a brief dialogue took place with the nurse. She fiddled with the tipping thing at the top of the scale and then said, “146.”

“146?” I remember repeating back.

“146,” she said again. Then she turned her attention to her tablet with all my information.

This was a bit of a milestone moment. When I went on my very first diet 10 years ago, I aimed to lose 50 pounds, my goal weight being 150. I abandoned that diet ultimately — and many others after that — yo-yo-ing between 175 and 185. But look at me now, wow, I finally got there, under 150 pounds! 

Except I didn’t feel all that happy. My only thought was, weird, this is not how I envisioned myself looking or feeling at my goal weight. For one, there’s a sense of finality to the term “goal weight,” like it’s an end game, and in this end game, I can finally believe I’m at a place where I don’t need to lose any more weight. But when I looked in the mirror, I didn’t believe that. I still thought I had work to do.

I also fantasized about the ways changing my body would impact my spirit. I thought I’d be more confident and comfortable in my skin, therefore moving through life with ease. Turns out, when you’re as critical of your body as I am, especially when it started during adolescence, your self-esteem can’t just magically change.

Of course, anyone who’s ever lost weight will tell you that weight loss doesn’t fix you. It doesn’t lead to a more fulfilling life or a happily ever after. Your other problems are still your other problems.

But maybe I found it hard to truly grasp that.

To dive a little deeper, I spoke to two women who underwent health transformations and have been vocal about how weight loss can impact what’s going on in your brain. Leaving my conversations with them, the same takeaway emerged.

Your mental well-being is just as important as your physical well-being.

Jacqueline Adan, 34, is a preschool teacher from San Francisco who’s been updating her now 135,000 Instagram followers on her weight-loss progress for more than five years now. She was 510 pounds in 2012 when she set out to lose weight after what she called a “rock bottom” moment at Disneyland when she got stuck in a turnstile. By 2016, she dropped 350 pounds and made headlines — appearing on TODAY — as she opened up about her journey.

In the years since, Adan had faced some struggles with weight gain, which also led to some health issues. She’s been open about all of that too, with many of her Instagram posts championing mental health awareness and self-love. She started seeing an eating disorder specialist and is recovering from a binge-eating disorder . 

In hindsight, she told me, she saw how being so critical of herself took its toll.

“I never took the time to be proud of all those accomplishments and actually work on some of that disordered thinking,” she shared. “When I looked in the mirror it’s like yeah, I think I did a great job. But it was always a ‘but’ — but it could be better, but I could have lost more.”

Now, being informed about and aware of her headspace has changed her approach to weight loss. 

“Along the journey, I think I didn’t make my mental health a priority,” she told me. “Everything I did was centered around weight loss. And then the more I lost, the more it became an obsession to see how small I can get. It went from being like, ‘I want to be healthy and live my life,’ to now, ‘I’m going to start restricting food, I’m going to start killing myself in the gym and try to get as small as possible.’ I didn’t really realize how damaging that was.”

Arielle Calderon, 31, had a similar reflection when sharing her weight-loss journey with me. She was a BuzzFeed writer in 2015 when she, by that point, lost 85 pounds on Weight Watchers, now known as WW . She started to write about weight loss for BuzzFeed, and posted about her recipes and fitness endeavors on Instagram, where she now has 157,000 followers. 

Fast forward to July 2018, when Calderon then wrote a blog on her personal website titled “ I Quit Weight Watchers And Here’s Why ,” a post I told her I still think about to this day.

“What started out as ‘balanced’ quickly turned into an obsessive routine that robbed me of my life,” she wrote in her post. Another line later reads, “I was happy with the physical outcome, but the toll this took on my mental health was not worth weighing and measuring everything I ate. It was a facade. This was not unconditional love with myself.”

In 2017, Calderon had been in and out of the hospital for a gallbladder issue, which eventually led to surgery. Being immobile and restricting certain foods on the doctor’s orders, she said, “triggered this extreme mental break.”

“I was crying all the time and binging, and I just wanted to not be on a diet, but then I felt like there was no way I couldn’t be on a diet because my whole social presence was about that,” she said. “There was pressure to keep it up and it was not good for me.”

She entered a 12-step anonymous program, found a therapist and later began seeing an intuitive-eating dietitian (more on intuitive eating later), who was insistent that Calderon stop dieting to recover. She quit WW in early 2018.

“It was months of agony in terms of debating with myself if I could do this or not, if I could stop dieting, and then it was like, because she just kept drilling it in me, I finally decided to stop.”

She gained back weight, she said, but is much happier now even though “it definitely was not an overnight shift.”

“I think if I were to do it all again, I would go to an intuitive-eating dietitian and talk it through — that way of like, how can I do this without mentally stretching myself to a horrible point?”

So what now? Start by finding the ‘why’ behind your journey. 

So what does taking care of your mental and emotional health actually look like? For those answers, I turned to the experts. The first among their do's and don’ts: Get to the root of why weight loss matters to you.

Candice Seti, a San Diego-based licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in weight management, put it this way: Focus on your “why” or “the goals of your goal.”

“If we were to fast forward to a year from now, and you’ve achieved that (weight-loss) goal, what’s different in your life? What’s better? What’s changed? How are you feeling? What advantages do you have that you didn’t have before? What negative things have gone away?” she said. “Just having them get a feel for why they want this and what it’s really about. So many times people go into it without a real understanding of that.”

The two other experts I spoke two — Emily Hemendinger, a licensed clinical social worker in Denver who works primarily with eating disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder patients, and Lindo Bacon, who holds a doctorate in physiology and authored the book “Health at Every Size” — also stressed the importance of reframing your mindset away from achieving a strictly physical transformation.

“Take the focus off of an aesthetic goal,” Hemendinger said. Instead, she promotes “body neutrality.” “If we can start to shift the focus away from changing our bodies and more on like, again, how we feel in our bodies, and having more of a neutral approach, like we don’t have to love our bodies. We can respect our bodies we can (be) grateful for what our bodies can do.”

“​​For people who are interested in weight loss, one of the biggest and most helpful things that they could do is to challenge that focus,” Bacon added. “Recognize that if they want to achieve better health and more satisfaction, feel more comfortable with food and (their) body, the idea is to focus more on appreciation of your body rather than changing your body and body acceptance.”

If you’re struggling to reframe your mindset, this advice can help. 

In her 2018 blog about quitting WW, Calderon wrote that she would skip social events in fear of facing certain foods. Adan told me that a nutritionist advised her to drop her calorie consumption to 800 per day when her weight loss started plateauing. It’s not news to anyone that diet culture is “about making you feel bad,” said Seti. 

“So much of the dieting world is so negative and so restrictive and so punitive,” Seti said. “That whole aspect of dieting just sets us up to have this really negative relationship with our body and ourselves and our capabilities.”

It’s no wonder so many people are caught in an unhappy headspace while trying to reach their weight-loss goals.

In my case, I struggled with the role of exercise in my life. When I didn’t run five days a week, I felt like I was letting myself down — which is easy in a pandemic when there’s nothing but time to work out. And when I didn’t exercise one day, it then became a slippery slope of ditching on all the other days too.

CANDICE SETI, A PSYCHOLOGIST

Seti offered some advice.

“You need to kind of break the all-or-nothing thinking — I’m either doing this 100% or I’m not doing it at all,” Seti said. “One of the most effective thinking changes you can have is kind of embracing a more 80-20 mentality, where there really are no failures, just an attempt to reach your goals 80% of the time.”

Between Adan, Calderon and the three experts, a common practice discussed was intuitive eating. This is a concept that brings eating back to the basics. You’re listening to your body and eating when you’re hungry and stopping when you’re full. Think less calorie counting and measuring and more general awareness of the food groups that should be on your plate.

Hemendinger offered another way to look at it: “I’m more about mindful eating and focusing on eating foods that feel good. So if you want chocolate, eat the chocolate, but how does it make you feel emotionally? Do you feel sluggish afterwards? Or do you have energy?”

Calderon and Adan both said they would seek out a regular therapist or intuitive-eating dietician if they were to embark on their journeys all over again. But when help from a professional isn’t an option, there are other resources, like online support groups, journals and workbooks. The book “Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program that Works,” by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, was also a favorite among this group.

For those along for the journey, here’s how to help.

The cheerleaders out there can make a massive difference in someone’s weight-loss experience, but be mindful of the messages you’re putting out there. Calderon, for example, said she’d often hear from friends, “Keep going!” 

“I was like, what does that mean? I felt so weird about it,” she shared. “It gives you the validation that the fact that I’m losing all this weight so quickly is like totally fine. Because to most people I look better, or I’m healthier, even though I wasn’t healthy because I was starving. And I was mentally definitely not OK.”

Commenting on another person’s body, whether positive or negative, makes an impact on that person no matter what.

“It’s external validation. Weight loss is making you valuable,” Seti said. “If somebody has lost a lot of weight, I mean, that’s something that certainly could deserve recognition. But it’s about making it so that that’s not everything, and finding ways to recognize and acknowledge people all the time anyway, for whatever they’re doing, for whatever they’re bringing, for whatever their beauty may be.”

Hemendinger even offered a script for next time the subject comes up.

“If my friend comes to me and says, 'Oh, I lost five pounds this week,' and they’re looking for kind of that reassurance of, 'You look great!' I won’t say that. Instead I’ll say, 'So, then how do you feel?'”

Wellness Goal: Diets and Exercises for Gaining Lean Body Mass Essay

Exercising and fitness are among the most popular activities in the contemporary world. Even though many individuals are involved into them, not all are aware about the proper ways of achieving the best results in the shortest periods of time. For this paper, I conducted a research and located the studies describing some of the most effective diets and exercise types for gaining lean body mass.

In the contemporary world exercising and being fit is gaining more popularity, especially among younger people. Millennials are focused on physical and aesthetical benefits of frequent exercises and often choose high protein diets in order to enhance the results. Both men and women are interested in gaining lean mass, developing prominent muscle and fitter bodies. This is why my wellness goal for this paper was to test the myths and realities of exercising. My objective was to gain five pounds of lean body mass by April by means of exercising and keeping to a high-protein diet.

Developing a plan considering the ways to achieve my wellness goal I chose a combination of several strategies. First of all, in order to gain lean mass an individual is to exercise regularly. I compiled a training schedule which included two or three workout sessions a week, the average length of one session was one hour. The exercises I did included weight lifting, squats, and bench press. This way, my target groups of muscles were leg, chest and arm muscles.

In order to enhance the results of my training sessions and speed up the development of my muscles I decided to employ special diet rich in protein. I made this decision based on the study by Brown, DiSilvestro, Babaknia and Devor (2004), which tested the effects of soy and whey protein bars on the development of lean body mass during the exercise sessions of the participants and compared the results to the data collected from the control group which had the same training program but consumed no protein bars at all. According to the study, the participants who had 33 grams of protein a day during the training period gained lean body mass, while the control group’s results showed no changes in lean body mass.

Another study written by Hartman, Tang, Wilkinson, Tarnopolsky, Lawrence, Fullerton, and Phillips (2007) compared the changes of lean body mass between the groups of participants consuming soy milk, no fat fluid milk and carbohydrate sports drinks (control group) right after the training sessions and one hour after that. The research demonstrated that the group of participants keeping to fluid milk diet showed the best results. The control group demonstrated 2.3 % change in lean body mass, the group consuming soy milk showed 3.1% change and the group keeping to fluid milk diet had 3.9% body mass change (Hartman, Tang, Wilkinson, Tarnopolsky, Lawrence, Fullerton, & Phillips, 2007).

The selection of my exercises also came from these two studies as both of them employed weight lifting leg, chest and arm exercises as the most effective ones for gaining lean body mass. Based on the research results I chose to include soy protein bars into my diet during the training period and to consume no fat fluid milk as the best lean body mass enhancer. I must admit, these results were a bit surprising because I was sure that carbohydrate sports drinks were the most efficient products for gaining lean body mass.

In conclusion, many individuals today are pursuing the goal of developing athletic and fit bodies with prominent muscles, yet many are convinced that regular and intense training is enough for the achievement of this objective. The scientific researches show that plain exercising does not help to gain lean body mass and dietary enhancers rich in protein are required.

Reader Essay: Why My Weight Is Not A Reflection Of My Lifestyle

I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t shamed for the size of my body.

Family, friends, classmates, and even strangers felt it was their place to provide their opinion about my weight and offer unsolicited suggestions on how to lose it. When I was five years old, the responses to my weight painted a clear picture that I was ugly, unworthy, and unacceptable. All the negative attention to my body made me feel less than human and like I needed to change my body to earn my place in society. If I wasn’t skinny, I felt like an outcast, subhuman, and a failure.

The summer before I started high school, puberty changed the shape of my body. I was no longer fat. I wasn’t skinny, but I wasn’t fat. I adored how my hip bones protruded through my jeans. For the first time, I felt I belonged.

After college, I married and got pregnant with my first child. My OB-GYN told me not to gain more than 20 pounds during my pregnancy. He said, ideally, I shouldn’t gain any weight since I was already overweight. Out of fear, I starved myself and went to aerobic dance classes until I went into labor. I gained 10 pounds during my pregnancy. But when my son was born, he had a few medical issues, which he overcame, but I blamed myself for being more concerned about gaining weight than my baby’s health.

My doctors drove home that my weight was due to my being inactive and overeating. At 10 years old, my pediatrician told me not to go over 100 pounds until I was in eighth grade—what could a 10-year-old do with that information? In college, I went to a nearby doctor. When my appointment was over, I quickly crossed the waiting room and was just steps from the exit door when I heard the doctor yell across the waiting room full of patients. His words felt like a knife thrown at my back: “And get that weight off!”

Shame was a cruel but commanding motivator. When a diet said to take in 1200 calories a day, I would take in 600 calories per day. When the diet program said to exercise one hour every day, I exercised for two. Although I was under-eating and over-exercising, I still wasn’t skinny, so I bought diet pills and regularly took over-the-counter diuretics and laxatives to take more weight off. 

“ I religiously adhered to no-fat and low-fat foods because the diet industry told us fat of any sort was the enemy. ”

And I learned how to purge. While my kids had burgers and fries, I’d order a salad with lemon juice as a dressing. I walked, rode my bike, and read hundreds of books about exercise and weight loss. I focused on cooking and eating mostly vegetables. When we’d go to a restaurant, I’d scrutinize the menu ahead of time, looking for calorie counts of potential menu items I could eat. I ordered sandwiches wrapped in lettuce instead of bread. If I got a baked potato, I’d ask for no butter, cheese, or sour cream to reduce the calories from fat. I religiously adhered to no-fat and low-fat foods because the diet industry told us fat of any sort was the enemy.

By the time I was 50, I had mastered yo-yo dieting. Despite a mostly healthy diet, my body looked like one most would think had been sitting around watching TV and eating chips and cookies. Although my family’s diet was primarily healthy, I knew by looking at my body that most would not believe me if I told them we never had junk food at home. 

One year, when tornadoes knocked out power to our house for over a week while we were on vacation, a friend went to clean out our refrigerator before the food rotted from lack of refrigeration. When I returned, I thanked my friend for saving us from a disgusting mess. She replied, “I was surprised! You really do eat healthy! I thought I’d find at least some ice cream in your house, but there was none.” It was validating to hear, but to the outside world, I still was unacceptably fat.

When I turned 60, I once again was able to lose weight. It first came off when I single-handedly landscaped our new home’s front and back yards, hauling 30, 40, and 50-pound native stones to line the beds, lifting sacks of mulch, and digging out the flower beds. With that bit of weight loss, I was inspired to start tracking my calories and ride my bike more. I was happier and more confident, and it felt good to be in control. Yet it was hard to dismiss that nagging voice reminding me I could just as quickly gain the weight back.

Today, I keep striving to lose weight. My motivation is my health, but shame still influences how I feel about my body and why I want to be thinner. Fat bias exists, especially for women. And too many in the medical field still believe being overweight or obese means one is unhealthy. 

I’d love for others to know that few overweight people are sedentary, eat junk food while watching TV, and are clueless about healthy lifestyles. Some of us eat a healthy diet and get regular, meaningful exercise. I adore cycling, hiking, and kayaking. I’m a total nature nerd in need of identifying every plant, tree, snake, bird, and bug. These activities allow me to learn about and experience nature. 

I also belong to a Facebook group for women triathletes in the Athena class who are 160+ lbs. Many of these women complete Ironman triathlons. Every day, they prove that being overweight does not equal being unhealthy.

We don’t need advice on losing weight or being told about the best new exercise fad. Some of us are just 64-year-olds who eat vegetarian meals and go gravel cycling and kayaking several times a week. 

What we do need is respect and understanding. Fat bias contributes to the shaming, blaming, and injustices many of us endure. Some of us trying to lose weight get down on ourselves when shamed, and it’s hard to stay motivated. And many of us who are not-so-thin love our healthy, strong bodies just as they are! Recently, I was cycling with a friend, wearing my favorite biking t-shirt with Cycologist blazed across the front. Despite being cute and comfy, I openly admitted my hesitation with my shirt. 

“I just know if I go out in public with this shirt on, others will read my shirt, then look at me, and sarcastically think, ‘Yeah, I bet she rides a bike!’” I said.

My friend simply replied: “I wouldn’t care what others say.” 

I say many of us do live a healthy lifestyle, and some of us do ride a bike.
