St. John’s is an ideal place for students to pursue their post-secondary education

Home to almost 19,000 students from over 127 countries, and with a diverse choice of what to study and where, Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) students are learning, researching, creating and engaging at Atlantic Canada’s most affordable university.

VIDEO: We Are Here: Cold Ocean and Arctic at Memorial

In 2022 alone, Memorial conferred 1,059 graduate degrees, including 120 PhD’s. That’s MUN’s highest numbers ever and an important milestone, “as graduate students are key to future regional prosperity and crucial in advancing knowledge, driving innovation, and making Canada more productive and globally competitive,” says Andrew Kim, Director, Graduate Enrolment Services for the School of Graduate Studies at Memorial University.

MUN also opened their new $350 million Core Science Facility in September 2021. Built to house both the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, the building is a centrepiece of MUN’s increased efforts to recruit both domestically and internationally.

MUN has recently announced new master of applied science in software engineering, master of artificial intelligence, and master of data science programs, to meet a growing demand across technology sectors in the province, particularly in the high-tech industry.

Their new mechatronics engineering program, the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada, provides students an opportunity to meet the demands of the growing high-tech sector in careers such as advanced manufacturing systems, robotics, autonomous driving, unmanned aerial vehicles and remotely operated underwater vehicles, among others.

With some 7,000 students, and nearly 100 full-time and 300 part-time courses at 17 campus locations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, College of the North Atlantic (CNA) is one of the largest post-secondary education skills training centres in Atlantic Canada. With a history dating back 50 years, CNA continues to have the lowest tuition fees of any post-secondary institution in Atlantic Canada.

With an affordable cost of living and world-class education opportunities, St. John’s is the ideal place for dedicated students to pursue their post-secondary education. And the natural, majestic wonders combined with the unique, vibrant culture of our province make for the perfect ‘campus.’

N.L. government announces education review, PCs dismiss 'another study'

Education accord is expected to be in by end of the year.

The N.L. government has tapped two Memorial University professors to create a road map by the end of the year to modernize education.

The Education Accord advisory team chairs are Karen Goodnough and Anne Burke, who both teach in the education faculty.

"We're at a very pivotal time, we feel, here in this province, in terms of education. And it's a time where we want to take a step forward in modernizing and transforming education," Education Minister Krista Lynn Howell told reporters Thursday.

"So we've got some, some big plans and some lofty goals for these ladies, but know that they're up for the challenge."

The government says the accord will encompass early learning and childhood development; education engagement and transformation, health and well-being in education environments, and post-secondary education and learning across the life span.

Goodnough said it's an opportunity to take all the past reports and documents on education and act on them, while also working with other partners and stakeholders to improve both economic and social goals.

"This is a big task, we recognize that. But it's about creating a shared vision for K-12, post-secondary, formal learning and informal learning. It's very exciting, extremely exciting," said Goodnough.

Burke said the work will look at education from "birth to, say, 105," adding that it's important to include seniors and opportunities for continuing education.

Aggressive timeline

There have been past attempts by the government to reconfigure the education system — under former premier Dwight Ball there was an education action plan — and Howell said they have a lot of good information from that previous research.

"But I think now we're at a point where the ground has really shifted under us, over the last few years, during the pandemic and coming out of the pandemic," said Howell. "So we want to take that in consideration with all the information that we've been given before, take an evaluation of that and continue to see what opportunities there are to move forward."

Funding for the accord will be absorbed by the Department of Education, she said.

  • Underfunded school inclusion model is 'creating a monster,' says retired teacher
  • Public exams are soon to be a thing of the past in N.L. For some, it's cause for excitement

The accord is due to be delivered to the government by Dec. 31.

"We've given these ladies a very aggressive timeline," she said.

More studies

PC education critic Paul Dinn wasn't impressed by the announcement, listing past initiatives like the public post-secondary education review report, the premier's task force on education, and the symposium on learning loss due to COVID 19.

"The minister's desk is full of announcements, studies and reports outlining the problems facing the education system in our province," said Dinn in a statement.

"Teachers, parents, child-care workers and other stakeholders have been calling for action for years. Yet the Liberal government wants to do another study and kick the can down the road."

Dinn said vision and action are needed but he doesn't see that in the Liberal government.

John Harris, executive director of external affairs of Memorial University's students' union, also wasn't impressed with the plan.

"We don't need a yearlong study to tell us that this government has made education unaccessible for post-secondary students," he said, pointing to a recent tuition increase.

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program is a Newfoundland and Labrador provincial program for adults to achieve a high school equivalency diploma, or to upgrade specific subject areas to meet entrance requirements to post-secondary programs.

The ABE program is composed of three levels:

  • Level I:  Basic literacy (K-6)
  • Level II: Equivalent to grades 7-9
  • Level III: Corresponds to grades 10-12

The Murphy Centre offers Level II and Level III ABE at our Prince Philip Drive location.  However, if it is determined that an applicant needs to complete Level I, the Murphy Centre will refer to an organization who offers it.

There are three profiles offered in Level III ABE, depending on the individual’s post secondary goals:

  • Degree and Technical Profile:  This profile corresponds to the academic high school credit program.  It is intended for participants planning to attend University or other post secondary programs which require an academic graduation.
  • Business-Related College Profile: This profile is for participants who plan to attend a business related college program.  With the exception of science, all courses completed are academic.
  • General College Profile: This profile corresponds to the general high school credit program and is intended for participants who plan to enter programs which require this profile.

As per guidelines developed by the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour in Newfoundland and Labrador, to complete Level II/ III ABE:

  • Applicants must be 19 years old and residents of Canada. (This includes permanent residents, landed immigrants or persons with refugee status.)
  • Applicants may be given special permission to enrol if they are 18, have been out of school for six months and extenuating circumstances prevent them from attending the K-12 system. The Murphy Centre can provide a copy of the application for special permission or it may be found here . The application must be submitted to the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour.
  • Applicants younger than 18 will not be considered for the ABE program.

ABE is a funded program. To check if you are eligible for funding, or if you have further questions about ABE, please contact our academic outreach coordinator (Sondria) at 709-753-2830 or by email: [email protected] or call our intake coordinator (Trudy) at 709-576-6606 or email trudymorgancole @murphycentre.ca
