  • Google , founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, started as a revolutionary new search engine, which spurred the growth of one of the world’s most valuable brands (worth $309 billion in 2019, according to statistics reported by CNBC). Google has become a massive, multinational technology company, developing all things internet-related, including its own web browser (Chrome), laptops (Chromebooks), smart glasses, and internet television streams (Chromecast). In 2015, Google announced that it was forming the parent company Alphabet to run the organization’s diverse departments with Google existing as a subsidiary.
  • Netflix  launched in 1997 as an online-based movie rental service, where people could order DVDs and have them delivered to their home.   • Facebook and Twitter  are two of the biggest social media websites. Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok also have substantial user bases in the hundreds of millions or more. According to a 2018 Pew Research Survey, 75% of all U.S. adults use YouTube and 68% use Facebook. Over 94% of 18- to 24-year-olds use YouTube, and 80% of them use Facebook. Major players in the business world own these brands. For example, Facebook owns Instagram and other platforms such as WhatsApp. Additionally, Google owns multiple web ventures including YouTube. The further along students are in their undergraduate career and the more skills they possess, the more they’ll be able to do in their internships.

Narration:  Pick out your favorite  recording software  or DAW (digital audio workstation) and hop to it! For a professional presentation, you want to make sure your audio is fairly high quality. Use a large closet or other audio-friendly space for recording if you don’t have an audio setup.

Music:  You can use any music you want for an internal presentation, but for a public conference, you should definitely seek out some  royalty-free audio .

Video:  Whether you’re using pre-recorded or live video, you’ll want to make sure you have the right setup. As with narration, you’ll want high-quality sound, along with a decent camera. For live video, try to use an area with a strong internet connection to ensure you don’t suffer technical difficulties.

Interactive elements:  Creating these can be part of the slide design process (for instance, if you’re incorporating a game into your presentation). Creating these from scratch requires a great deal of technical know-how, but you can also find lots of pre-made  templates  out there.

GIFs and animations:  These are also included in many templates, since they’re such a vital part of creating a dynamic multimedia presentation. You may consider using animations for clever transitions, to spice up  infographics , or just to add color to your slides.

5) Write, write, write!

Once you have a thorough outline, writing text for your presentation should be a breeze. Remember, most of the words should come out of your mouth, with only the bare fundamentals on your slides.

Still, this is the step where you’re actually using your software and creating your presentation. However much prep you’ve done, it can feel like a momentous occasion.

Don’t be afraid to make changes at this point in the process. It’s good to have a thorough outline, but you’re not bound by it. If you made space for an infographic but you feel your data would be better served with a text slide, feel free to make changes.

In terms of  writing  style, while your presentation will likely be structured like an essay, it should be written like ad copy. Keep everything short, sweet, and punchy, conveying your concepts as concisely as possible. You can actually be even less specific than you would in an ad, since you’ll be delivering the presentation yourself. But remember to include any details you want to stick in your audience’s head.

Beyond that, play around with style. Try to use writing that suits your brand or the meaning behind your presentation. A jovial, meme-y style might be perfect for a team-building meeting, while an inspirational, important tone better suits a keynote address.

6) Add your multimedia elements

Once you’ve got everything laid out, it’s time to add the fun stuff. Keynote, PowerPoint, and Google Slides all have accessible tools for adding multimedia elements, as do the other software examples listed above.

While preparing your media is a challenge, you’ll also have to spend some time figuring out the best way to integrate them. Technical difficulties can be a death sentence for any presentation, so you’ll want to prepare in advance to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Typically, you’ll be able to control what settings cause the media to play. For instance, Google Slides lets you set elements to play automatically, manually, or with a click. Regardless, you should be sure to preview your slideshow and make sure that everything looks right and plays on cue.

7) Review, revise, and present

First, let’s clarify  attribution  and  citation  . As you learned earlier, different disciplines have different citation conventions. Both MLA and APA styles have specific guidelines for visual and audio media citations. You should always cite sources that you use in your research. In a Power Point presentation, this would typically be a Works Cited or References slide at the end. You would use in-text or parenthetical citations as appropriate in other slides.

An  attribution  is used to give credit to the creator of an image or other digital content. There isn’t one correct way to give an attribution, but there are best practices. Often, the creator will specify on their website how they wish for you to give attribution.

Creative Commons  has also developed best practice guidelines when crediting digital media sources. For example, you will notice that images in this Learning Unit have a source link and a link to the license deed in the caption.

In addition to a bibliography slide, you could provide an “Image Credits” or “Attributions” slide at the end that lists all of the media used in the presentation. This would allow for a longer citation that the creator requested, and could be used in addition to (or) in lieu of the brief caption attribution.

How Does the Master of Digital Media Program Help You Become a Producer of Digital Media Products?

Organizations that build digital media products rely on multi-skilled teams and manage those teams with business processes designed to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness. For example, making a game requires storytellers, programmers, artists, data analysts, user experience designers, project managers and animators. "Throwing things over the wall" between siloed groups of experts is not an effective way to manage things. The Master of Digital Media (MDM) program educates students on these two aspects – working in multi-skilled teams and engaging with a wide range of modern, creative business processes – while making digital media products that deliver value for people. The MDM program is designed to help graduates develop six core competencies that will serve them well in their careers.

Students acquire these skills partly through classroom learning but mostly in experiential learning, working on multiple  projects . Projects at MDM run throughout the three semesters. These projects require students to collaborate with colleagues with different skill sets, and they also get to practise the business processes they learn. Projects in semesters two and three are industry projects for real-world clients looking for digital media solutions.

The MDM caters to students with an entrepreneurial vision. In addition to developing their business skills, they also hone their abilities to pitch, seek the right partners and investors, and manage resources. Looking back on the "Women and the Digital Economy" event

A key priority for policymakers, researchers, and the larger development community in India is to close the digital gender divide and identify investments to bridge other gender gaps in access and opportunity. On February 26, 2024, Inclusion Economics India Centre and Yale Inclusion Economics convened nearly 70 members of government, academia, philanthropy, and private sector organizations in Delhi, India, to assess available evidence on women and the digital economy.

Charting out pathways to close digital gender gaps

For the past decade, the Inclusion Economics India Centre (IEIC) and Inclusion Economics at Yale University (YIE) have conducted rigorous research to address the multifaceted challenges Indian women face, ranging from lack of job opportunities in rural areas to women’s limited digital and financial inclusion. In that time, India has made impressive progress in improving women’s opportunities along many fronts. For example, it has entirely closed its gender gap in bank account ownership, with over 282 million women now owning their own bank accounts . Nearly all women have digital IDs, and increasingly, women are gaining access to mobile phones, which are important access points for financial tools, information, and connection with others. 

Yet despite this progress, significant digital gender gaps persist, and Indian women are still 40% less likely than men to access mobile internet . What can we do to close these gaps? On 26 February 2024, IEIC convened researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to share research on policy levers to bridge India’s digital divide and provide a platform for cross-sectoral leaders and decision-makers to reflect on insights and discuss future research and intervention priority areas to close last-mile gender gaps in digital access.

Session 1  – Mapping Digital Gender Gaps: What Do We Know?

Dr Charity Troyer Moore (Scientific Director of Inclusion Economics) began the day by introducing YIE’s and IEIC’s ongoing research on digital gender gaps. Initiated seven years ago, this research has focussed on understanding critical questions around the digital gender divide, including what gaps exist, why they exist, why they matter, and how they can be closed. At the onset of this research, India had one of the world’s highest gender gaps in mobile ownership. Since 2017, the number of women accessing smartphones has increased, but gender gaps have persisted. Economic barriers – due to women’s more limited access to jobs and resources – as well as normative barriers, including the view that phones are not appropriate for women, are both drivers of this persistent gap. Moore’s presentation delved deeper into some of the restrictive norms that limit women’s access to mobile phones, fuelled by beliefs that phones threaten women’s purity and reputation, and they may distract women from caregiving duties. Moore ended her presentation by inviting the room to interrogate how we conceptualize digital inclusion and reflect on the extent to which individual ownership is required to enable women to engage meaningfully with digital technology.

Session 2 –  What Works to Close Digital Gender Gaps and Challenge Restrictive Gender Norms?

Dr Simone Schaner (Scientific Director, Gender of Inclusion Economics) shared findings from Inclusion Economics’ studies assessing the impact of two inter-related interventions aimed at closing digital gender gaps. In 2018, under the Sanchaar Kranti Yojana (SKY) program, the Government of Chhattisgarh distributed free smartphones to over 2 million rural women, providing 1GB of free data for the first six months, while ensuring all program villages had LTE network coverage. The IE research team conducted a quasi-experimental study based on the program eligibility rules to understand the program's impacts. The team also provided group-based digital literacy training to a subset of SKY beneficiaries living in the capital district in a randomized control trial (RCT). Schaner’s presentation outlined a critical emerging insight from these studies. Despite the program being well implemented and initially reversing the gender gap, the longer-run follow-up shows that it did not close gender gaps in ownership and smartphone usage. Drawing on evidence from the complementary RCT, however, the research team found that attending the 45-minute digital training significantly increased women’s smartphone usage ( 82.3% in the treated group, compared to 77.5% in the control ) two years after the training took place. Further, training improved women’s mental health, potentially driven by enhanced social networks facilitated through phones, highlighting the broader value of closing digital gender gaps on other essential aspects of women’s well-being .

Alex Paul Menon , the former Chief Executive Officer of the Chhattisgarh Infotech Promotion Society (CHIPS), reflected on his leadership experience driving the SKY program. His talk centred on the underlying motivation for the program and the research partnership and how the local political economy affected the ability to adhere to SKY’s original vision. The program began with the objective of empowering each household with a mobile phone, and then deploying digital tools to help recipients access the state through those new phones, to provide government services digitally at citizens' doorsteps, creating a key access point for the government and a use case for women who had received the phones. Menon noted several challenges during program rollout, which could have impeded the program’s success in keeping phones in the hands of women, and ways they addressed it.

Session 3 –  Lightning Innovation Round

Representatives of four organizations working to enable digital inclusion presented their work.

Presentation 1: Working Within Norms Constraints to Increase Women’s Phone Use: Mor Awaaz by Inclusion Economics India Centre and Inclusion Economics at Yale University

Dr  Charity Troyer Moore (Scientific Director of YIE) returned to share insights from an Inclusion Economics experimental study investigating a program they launched called ‘Mor Awaaz’. Through weekly automated calls, the study focused on providing useful information to women who recently received free smartphones through the SKY program. These entertaining, informational calls covered various topics spanning government benefits to women’s health. In addition to these calls, Mor Awaaz collected information through short phone surveys where women’s opinions and experiences were shared with the government. The Mor Awaaz service effectively disseminated information to these women, who reported sharing it with others. It was valued as an opportunity to share their experiences, but it did not result in greater phone ownership and use when compared to other women who had received SKY phones and training.

Presentation 2: AI for Dignified Livelihoods by Karya Inc

Safiya Husain (Co-Founder, Karya Inc.) introduced Karya’s work, which focuses on providing well-paid, flexible, and remote data work to individuals living in rural India (of which 50% are women) by connecting them to the global Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem. Husain also described Karya’s efforts to couple financial literacy education with the existing speech data generation work to promote skill development in tandem with income generation. Qualitative interviews revealed the popularity of their new story-based tasks curriculum, which facilitated easy learning, sparked community discussions and fostered financial hope and dialogue among family members. Comparing  pre- and post-tests from this trial group of participants, they found a large increase in measures of financial literacy.

Presentation 3: “What does digital mean to women in the world of unorganised work?” by Self Employed Women’s Association ( SEWA )

Sonal Sharma (Coordinator, SEWA) presented SEWA’s work on providing digital and financial literacy training to women in the informal sector. The presentation focussed on sharing insights from a SEWA study titled “ Impact of Access to Smartphones for Women in the Informal Sector ”, which studied 90 beneficiaries of a SEWA and USAID collaborative programme titled ‘Udyami’, wherein beneficiaries were provided with smartphones to contribute to their holistic development as grassroots micro-entrepreneurs, business owners and women in the informal economy. These women were based in Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Nagaland. Drawing on their study, Sharma shared that only 2% of women were using 15 or more applications, while 41% used less than 10 applications on their smartphones, and the majority of women fell somewhere in between (10-14 applications). Sharma further shared that SEWA’s recent approach to digital inclusion has four priorities: leveraging digital technology to boost livelihoods, accessing social security provisions, increasing the efficiency of routine operations and raising awareness and outreach for online selling.

Presentation 4: Gender Norms in Mobile Phone Ownership & Usage in India by BBC Media Action

Meghana Parik  (Research Manager, BBC Media Action) shared the results of BBC Media Action’s immersive primary research activities across nine cities in India. Compared to young men, young women’s phone use was much more closely restricted and monitored, with females reporting 42 percentage points higher levels of phone-related supervision. The research identified high adherence to gender-based expected roles and responsibilities and limited voice and agency for women and girls. Sexuality and marriage norms underpin all areas of girls and women’s lives and contribute to women’s vulnerability online. Some emergent themes to inform their ongoing work include distinguishing between protection and control, focusing on the transition to adulthood, and gender socialization, which also underline the observations around the interplay between digital gender gaps and norms. As a next step, the research team is exploring to identify enablers and barriers to digital use. This will feed into plans to develop pathways to change and operationalize gender-equal digital outcomes in India.

Session 4 –  Panel Discussion: Policy and Practitioner Perspectives on Closing Digital Gender Gaps

Kamya Chandra (Chief Strategy Officer, Center for Digital Public Infrastructure), Roshan Nair (Digital Specialist, Development Innovation Ventures-United States Agency for International Development), Meghana Parik (Research Manager, BBC Media Action) and Arjun Venkatraman (Program Officer (Digital), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) then joined the stage for a panel moderated by Dr. Urmi Bhattacharya (Research Lead, IEIC). The discussion began by asking what role policy should play in addressing mobile gender gaps.  Venkatraman outlined the fundamental need to deconstruct how digital gaps are conceptualized to understand corporate and consumer perspectives better. Chandra suggested that the digital divide is best addressed by focusing on the underlying infrastructure and using this as a platform to aid other policies and projects rather than seeking to close gaps through standalone service interventions. Panelists also reflected on missing elements in ongoing conversations around mainstreaming. Parik emphasized the need to update the law to reflect the digital environment. Despite technology-enabled sexual and gender-based violence being a prevalent concern for women in the digital space, there is currently a lack of legislation promoting protection. Nair added to this discussion by asking us to step back and think about digital inclusion for women extending beyond phone ownership and ensuring that women can participate in the underlying tech and infrastructure development.

Hoping to continue building on the momentum from this event, Vinay Nagaraju, the Executive Director of IEIC, shared that the Inclusion Economics team will focus on ways to collaborate with individuals and organizations with this shared vision and work towards finding research-backed recommendations to encourage women’s mobile access in the Indian landscape.

Trump’s Media Company Worth Nearly $8 Billion on First Trading Day

Trump Media & Technology Group, fresh from a merger with a cash-rich shell company, started trading on the Nasdaq, adding billions of dollars to the former president’s wealth.

Former President Donald J. Trump’s social media company jumped on its first day of trading on the Nasdaq on Tuesday, giving the company an estimated market value of close to $8 billion, larger than established corporations like Mattel, Alaska Airlines and Western Union.

The biggest beneficiary of the market action has been Mr. Trump, who owns about 60 percent of Trump Media, making him the largest shareholder. His stake in the company — the parent of Truth Social, the online platform that is Mr. Trump’s main megaphone for reaching supporters and attacking critics — is worth about $4.6 billion on paper.

For many investors, investing is as much as a sign of support for Mr. Trump personally as it is for his relatively small, loss-making social media company, which describes itself as a platform that stands against censorship by Big Tech. Such was the frenzy on Tuesday that trading in Trump Media’s shares was briefly halted by the stock exchange shortly after it opened because of extreme volatility. After gaining as much as 40 percent, the stock eased toward the close, ending the day 16 percent higher.

Trump Media closed its merger with Digital World Acquisition Corporation, a cash-rich public shell company, on Monday.

“We do appreciate President Trump but it’s more about free speech,” said Mark Willis, 63, who lives in Indian Trail, N.C. and has been buying shares in the public shell company that merged with Trump Media ever since the merger plan was proposed in 2021. “We believe this is the only social media platform that is not heavily influenced by the government.”

Scott Lewczak, a graphic designer in Nokesville, Va., and another longtime shareholder, said he is going to make money on the big surge in the price of Trump Media, but that is not the point. He said his investment was to support Truth Social and Mr. Trump.

“Even if I lose every penny, I will fight to the end,” Mr. Lewczak said.

The investors who have piled into the stock of Digital World, and now Trump Media, have tended to be individuals, rather than investment firms and hedge funds.

By most traditional measures, Trump Media’s valuation is inordinately high. The company took in just $3.3 million in revenue during the first nine months of last year, all from advertising on Truth Social, and recorded a loss of $49 million.

That means Trump Media’s market value is nearly 2,000 times its estimated annual revenue. Investors sometimes assign lofty valuations to small, loss-making companies in anticipation of rapid growth — or a belief that other investors will continue to bid up a company’s shares, for whatever reason — but typically not on this scale.

Other social media companies trade at far smaller price-to-sales ratios than Trump Media: Reddit is around 10, Meta is 7 and Snap is 6, according to FactSet. High-flying tech stocks like the chipmakers Nvidia and ARM trade at price-to-sales ratios of about 25.

On a message board on Truth Social, created by supporters of the merger, some of these investors cheered on the stock-market debut of Trump Media.

“If anyone deserves to be a trillionaire, it is Donald J Trump,” one poster said. “Never bet against a billionaire with over a hundred million supporters who are determined to fix America and preserve freedom for all” said another.

Chad Nedohin, 40, who has been a vocal supporter of the merger on Truth Social, said in an interview that most people buying Trump Media’s stock are not focused on the valuation of the company but making sure Truth Social remains viable.

“You are looking at people who are investors and not traders,” said Mr. Nedohin, who lives in Canada and works as an engineer and a Christian worship leader. “We are seeing long-term holders who are MAGA and they are Trump’s base.”

Still, based on its trading patterns, Trump Media looks a lot like the so-called meme stocks — GameStop, AMC Entertainment and others — that were propelled to dizzying heights by armies of amateur investors during the pandemic. Meme stocks tend to trade more on emotion than fundamentals.

“It’s difficult to say how this will trade, but it definitely has the DNA of a meme stock, so we might see some extreme volatility,” said Kristi Marvin, a former investment banker and editor of SPACInsider, which gathers data on the market for special purpose acquisition companies.

Trump Media’s prospects met with skepticism on popular investment boards on the social media platform Reddit. “Do people really dare to buy this stock?” asked one poster.

Many of the publicly listed holders of the stock, with most filings dating to the end of 2023, are retail investment advisers who help facilitate trading on behalf of individual clients, and those contacted by The New York Times were broadly unwilling to express a view on Trump Media themselves.

“Our typical advice to our clients is that you are best owning a diversified portfolio,” said Kevin Grogan, chief investment officer for Buckingham Wealth Partners.

Digital World was founded as a special purpose acquisition company. The sole purpose of a SPAC is to raise money from investors and then merge with an operating business, which then becomes the publicly traded entity.

Any big investors that bought shares of Digital World or Trump Media would not be required to publicly disclose their holdings until the middle of May. Some big investors have shorted, or bet against, Trump Media shares, on the assumption that the company cannot continue to trade at such a heady price.

Trump Media, according to S3 Partners, a financial data company, is now the most shorted company to merge with a SPAC in the United States.

The merger between Trump Media and Digital World this week was completed as Mr. Trump faced a deadline to secure a bond to cover a big penalty imposed by a judge in a civil fraud case. But in a break for Mr. Trump, an appellate court reduced the amount that he would need to post, to $175 million from $454 million, and gave him more time to raise the money.

The appellate court’s action seemed to ease the pressure on Mr. Trump to try to tap his newfound Trump Media wealth. To do so, he would need the company’s new seven-member board to remove a restriction that prevents him from selling shares or using shares as collateral for six months.

The board may still vote to loosen that restriction if that is what Mr. Trump wants. He holds tremendous sway over the company: Besides owning about 60 percent of Trump Media’s stock, he owns a separate class of shares that gives him at least 55 percent voting power over any measure presented for a shareholder vote. And the company’s seven-member board is stacked with loyalists, including his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.

But now that Mr. Trump no longer faces an urgent need to raise a large amount of cash, he might be content to let the six-month restriction on selling shares remain. From Mr. Trump’s perspective, the surging price of Trump Media’s shares gives him bragging rights on the campaign trail. One of his political calling cards has been to talk about his success as a businessman and his enormous wealth — something that’s easier for him to do since the merger.

The bigger challenge for Trump Media’s board is coming up with a strategy to increase the company’s business and expand the reach of Truth Social in order to justify the company’s valuation. Truth Social is a relative minnow in the social media universe and largely dependent on Mr. Trump’s posts for drawing traffic.

In merging with Digital World, Trump Media got a badly needed infusion of roughly $300 million in cash that Digital World had raised from investors. Without that infusion, Trump Media and Truth Social were looking at potentially shutting down.

And as a public company, Trump Media will be required to file periodic financial reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission and reveal in detail any deals it may strike with Mr. Trump.

“In a public company you have the scrutiny now of investors and regulators,” said Usha Rodrigues, a professor of corporate law at the University of Georgia School of Law. “Any stockholder now has standing to bring a lawsuit if they claim one of the company’s statements is misleading.”
