What Is A Project Management Research Paper?

It is an assignment that requires students to integrate the different processes to achieve a particular goal and deliverables. Project management is based on the principle that all tasks are special, and thus, you should not treat two tasks as the same.

In this type of assignment, students have to develop many coordination skills and fairness in dealing with various projects. Since various tasks differ in line with their functional procedures, you have to dig deeper to determine how each yields direct and proportional earnings in the end. Does all these sound like rocket science to you? Well, the next few lines will make you understand this subject better.

Key Points About A Project Management Thesis

There are different steps involved in writing a project management paper. These will contribute to the body paragraphs’ overall quality, length, and depth. The various practices involved in project management include:

Initiating Planning Executing Controlling Closing the work of a team

When you bring all these processes together, you can achieve a particular goal or specific success within the set time. That brings us to a critical component of project management – time! Every project has a given time frame within which it is complete. It is the primary challenge as time constraints are always when unexpected issues arise. However, with practice, time will not be a factor anymore; it will be the motivation for completing a particular project. How To Do Good Research For A Thesis

If you want to succeed in your thesis, research project, or dissertation, you need to put your best foot forward. However, you will first need to consult your professor to see whether your chosen topic is adequate for your thesis.

Choose A Topic: The first thing is browsing through a wide variety of topics and finding the right one for your thesis. Let’s say you want to get an ideal project management topic. You can browse through all these topics and find the best that you can use. However, remember, you need to be interested in that field so that you can feel excited while doing the research. Furthermore, try to select a topic that has also been researched before by other scholars. It doesn’t necessarily need to be the same topic but at least something similar. Search For Research Sources: Once you have known the topic you want to do. Try and search for the topic’s sources. Try and see whether you can find valuable information regarding the same. Your research needs to be based on proven facts and statistics. Hence, make use of Google Scholar, Google Books, or Microsoft Academic. You can’t miss finding something similar to what you are actively looking for. Also, remember to use numerous websites, online libraries, and much more. Remember to create short notes for the same. Create A Thesis Statement: Once you have gotten as much background information as you wish, you can now create a thesis statement. Continue adding short notes with all the new information that you are getting. The purpose of the thesis statement is to explain what the entire research paper will be dedicated to. The thesis helps to explain the subject of your research, how you will reach your goal methods to justify your point, and what you expect to obtain as a result. Also, remember, your thesis statement needs to be approved by your professor. Write A Draft: By now you should have gotten some valuable information. You can then use that to write a draft or a rough outline. This draft is equally important as the final version. The advantage is that you can add as many points as you wish and then simplify them as you go on. Know what to include and what to omit. Write The Final Version: Use all the resources and try to write the final version. Remember to have your references, sources cited, and bibliography formatted. Remember, the final version should be presentable. You wouldn’t want to repeat your thesis all over again. Give it your best shot. Also, remember to proofread to ensure that the grammar is correct. That’s it.

Hottest project management trends in 2024: What does the future look like

Project management trends

Just think of what the project management industry looked like ten years ago. Fewer methodologies, fewer tools, smaller teams, and simpler projects. Cut to 2024, and things have changed tremendously as the teams are no longer smaller and the projects are no longer simpler.

As the saying goes, “Change is the only constant.” It seems so true for the project management industry. The project management landscape is changing rapidly with evolving technologies, tools, and the latest trends. And, the change doesn’t seem to slow down.

Let’s cut the chase and take a look at the emerging trends in project management happening all around the world.

6 Project management trends you should know

1. the expansion of artificial intelligence (ai) and automation.

project management research topics 2022

There is a lot of buzz around artificial intelligence and its implications. Just like software development, aerospace, healthcare, and finance, the impact of artificial intelligence and automation can also be seen and felt in the project management.

Impact: Many companies have already started using AI in project management to perform their daily tasks that require human effort through task automation. The effect goes beyond automating simple tasks but is also quite helpful in obtaining performance insights.

Project managers can use automation to perform complex tasks ranging from scheduling to data visualization and make informed decisions based on the captured insights.

What can you do to adapt:

First and foremost, project managers should embrace AI in project management and then learn how to leverage it for successful project completion.

Once you’ve learned to leverage AI to automate data, project execution will be much easier than before. It also makes way for building meaningful relationships with your team members and clients.

Let’s see how AI has enabled better risk estimation: We all know how deadlines are pushed ahead either due to bad estimation or unknown external factors.

With artificial intelligence, you can get the right estimation of a project’s duration, costs, and progress helping you predict realistic timelines for your project.

2. Inclusion of hybrid project management approach

Inclusion of hybrid project management approaches

Not all projects are equal and not all teams can stick to one specific methodology.

That’s why hybrid project management has been gaining attention and the number of project managers and Scrum masters combining more than one methodology is increasing.

In simple words, hybrid project management refers to methods combining approaches from the traditional PM environment, agile, scrum, and lean to drive project success.

Impact : When you implement the hybrid model, you can bring all your projects, tasks, people, and communications to one place helping you make the right business choices.

For instance, by mixing the traditional approach with the Agile methodology, team members with different views, and working styles can work together for more stability, engagement, and efficiency.

Use discretion to understand which methodology works best for a specific project. Smart project managers are opting for a mix of agile and traditional methodology to get the best of both worlds.

Tip: We recommend using a traditional approach for simple and clear parts and agile for complex ones while working in a multi-project environment.

3. The impact of emotional intelligence (EQ)

The impact of emotional intelligence (EQ)

You might be wondering how the ability to understand and recognize emotions has something to do with project success. Well, it does play a vital role.

When TeleSmart took a survey, it was found that 58% of respondents believe that emotional intelligence is one of the strongest predictors of performance irrespective of the nature of your job.

Impact: Managing projects goes beyond defining the scope, making deadlines, and deciding the budget. Project managers have to manage people as well and that means more complications , which requires emotional intelligence and soft skills.

Failing to understand team members’ emotions could lead to a lot of emotional activity in a team. The result isn’t always all hunky-dory.

To deal with different personalities and ensuring project success, a proper understanding of emotions (both yours and others) is required – making it a necessary leadership skill for project managers all over the globe.

Thus, learning the art of emotions and what drives people is becoming more important than ever to predict project success in the future.

4. More focus on data analytics and numbers

More focus on data analytics and numbers

Project management involves a lot of data. Project managers are increasingly leveraging data insights to make informed decisions to handle projects better and increase business growth.

Impact : Whether it’s project planning , quality management, or risk estimation, the use of big data and data analysis has already started shaping the project management world. The collected data is useful for learning how to form teams, the size of a team, how to include and position team members, and the skill sets needed to manage projects better.

The smart and wise ones leverage the technological advancements to stay relevant. Data analytics, if used the right way has the power to produce a lot of business value.

“What gets measured, gets managed” — Peter Drucker, management guru

If you’re someone who doesn’t like numbers, find the tools that can do the work for you. Project analytics tools offer strategic parameters that could help you get the complete picture of all project activities. Get high-level data and custom reports with tech tools such as Google Data Studio, Tableau to visualize data.

5. Advanced project management tools and solutions

Advanced project management tools and solutions

In today’s digital era, project management tools have become an indispensable part of project management. It has long been one of the most effective project management trend The numbers tell the same story. According to research , 77 percent of high-performing projects use project management software to plan, execute, and control all aspects of project management.

Impact : Project management tools and solutions have always been the game-changing factor. Below are some ways in which these tools are making positive changes in project management.

6 Project Management Trends to Expect in 2022

December 20, 2021 - 10 min read

Maria Waida

Project management will undergo significant changes this coming year. Worldwide physical and cultural events are shaping every new project management trend happening in the industry. They may even be transforming the entire project management discipline. Keep reading to stay in the know about some of the most notable changes, alongside our predictions for what to expect in the near future.

What are the current trends in project management?

While we all want to see into the future of project management trends, these current industry ideas are sure to influence project management teams for months to come:

Improving communication across blended teams

Effective communication skills are required to stay motivated during and after the pandemic. This means having the necessary tools and expertise to work remotely. Today’s project managers must learn how to use systems that overcome the challenges of working from home . Not only does improving communication increase productivity, but it may also improve mental health in the workplace after the pandemic .

Maximizing the effectiveness of hybrid and remote work

Even after the global pandemic has subsided, the hybrid work model will still be a staple of business moving forward. There are many advantages to having face-to-face interaction with employees. However, this interaction will require the use of new technology and strategies to manage it properly.

Embracing Agile as a means to combine strategy with output

In 2022, companies will need to ensure that their teams are Agile and fast-moving. Instead of having a one-size-fits-all framework, teams will need to have the knowledge and experience necessary to choose strategic frameworks that fit their needs.

Over the past year, more companies have started using Agile methods to improve their project management processes . We would expect them to increase their usage in the coming years.

A prediction of future trends in project management

Based on our experience and research, we believe that the following future trends in project management are worth exploring. Use each one to better understand your goals for the upcoming year and what the industry may look like in a few months' time.

1. Fully remote project teams

The onset of the coronavirus pandemic forced many organizations to rethink their work-from-home policies . As a result, many workers in the US have shifted to working from home full- or part-time. That means project management is no longer confined to the typical office.

Some tasks are more easily carried out when team members are located close to one another. For instance, team building exercises are less time-consuming when done face-to-face. Despite the challenges, remote work has many advantages that can help organizations attract and retain top talent. For instance, it allows employees to work from anywhere in the world.

Alongside that, full-time employees are increasingly working as members of dispersed, global teams, communicating and coordinating via online software and apps. Technology plays a huge role in that. Meetings are held via Zoom, tasks are tracked in a project management tool, and schedules are developed and delivered to team members entirely online.

Since the rise of remote work is likely to continue, project managers need to find ways to reduce friction and make their work more efficient. So the question to ask yourself is: can you improve your projects by bringing on freelancers or remote workers ? If the answer is yes, don't hold back because of technology complications — the right tech exists to support you.

2. An increased dependency on project management tools

Project management has always been a tool for carrying out goals and managing risk. Over the years, however, its scope has broadened to encompass a wide range of activities and initiatives.

Project management tools help organizations execute their strategy but they can also be used to manage the portfolio and the various tasks related to that strategy. Doing so will help them make more informed decisions and improve their organizations' progress on key goals while providing more value .

There are external project management trends affecting our dependence on these tools too. As the world changes due to the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning , project management will be affected by the need to collect and analyze vast amounts of data. Exactly how this will play out is difficult to predict but most experts agree that it will be unavoidable.

3. A focus on enhanced collaboration

The true digital transformation of project management should be complete by the end of 2022. We’re referring to relying on online tools for collaboration and coordination between teams, and not just complex back-and-forth email exchanges.

New remote, hybrid, and flexible working options allow employees to work wherever they want, while employers benefit from the higher quality output of their workers. Despite the advantages of distributed teams, it can be very challenging to promote collaboration among the employees.

In an effort to solve this issue, many companies have started implementing online project management tools. For example, some teams use multimedia conferencing so that remote workers can still meet and communicate with their in-house counterparts. Others use project management software such as Wrike to plan, schedule, and monitor progress across all active initiatives.

No matter which tools you choose to use in 2022, one thing is clear: learning how to work well with others despite physical barriers will continue to be essential as we continue to deal with the global pandemic.

4. Understanding different types of soft skills

Project managers typically need a certain level of expertise in various areas of operations in order to be successful in their roles. However, without the right combination of soft skills, they may not be able to effectively manage people and produce the best results.

First and foremost, the ability to communicate expectations and work well with all parties involved is very important. This is why soft skills such as empathy, decision-making, and leadership are critical to a project's success. A project manager who has these abilities plays a critical role in improving the entire team’s performance as both a model for behavior and setting the tone for workplace culture.

Because at the end of the day, the project manager will determine the level of cooperation between the team members until the project is finished.

Wondering how to stay ahead of the curve and improve your own soft skills? Here are some tips to practice:

  • Don’t make assumptions about what others are thinking and feeling. Encourage discussion and always get important project details in writing.
  • Encourage employees to be themselves, contribute to project planning, and express their personalities.
  • Connect on a deeper level with individual team members by asking questions about their life outside of work.
  • Learn how to properly apologize and resolve an argument for yourself and for others.
  • Be open to feedback. You can always learn and improve.

5. Emphasis on avoiding physical and mental stress

In 2022, we predict you'll be more challenged by employee development than employee retention, requiring your new team members to settle in faster with optimized training programs and work delegated to new team members sooner. Avoiding physical and mental stress will be a large part of keeping employees happy, healthy, and on your team.

You may not realize it but there are a lot of ways you can make work smoother for your entire team. Here’s how:

  • Set clear expectations with goals and deadlines This method would allow your team members to focus on the things that they're good at and not on the things that they're not good at. It would also prevent them from accidentally repeating the same exercises or processes.
  • Offer schedule flexibility Everyone wants to work more flexible hours. This is why it is important to allow your team members to work without being monitored often. They can only complete their work once specific deadlines have been met. Address issues, if they ever come up, and focus on making work easier for everyone involved. You can also provide more freedom in terms of where employees can work from. Offer at least one work from home day per week or month. Or, if your employees are local and have been entirely remote, give them a desk to come in and work from if they ever need it.
  • Make fitness part of workplace culture Your staff members should take time to exercise. Some ways to ensure this include offering some assistance through onsite yoga classes, walking meetings, or even small activities such as a group stretching session every morning.
  • Offer more praise than criticism Great managers recognize the efforts of their team members. They can either congratulate them on a great job in private or make a small announcement about their achievements during a weekly meeting. Even a small acknowledgment of someone’s hard work can make a big difference in how they feel about the project so far.

6. A continued concentration on Agile methodology

Agile development is a set of principles that enables developers to get started with projects without having to learn how to manage traditional tasks and processes. With Agile, teams can easily break down a project into multiple stages, allowing them to manage the work seamlessly. It also allows them to collaborate more effectively with project stakeholders.

Not only is it more adaptable—a must now that we’re seeing a renewed importance on remote work flexibility and increased attention on how we collaborate—but it’s also completely customizable.

5 project management trends to look out for in 2022

For the past years, project management has become an essential part of a series of industry segments, because it crosses corporate and geographic boundaries, adapting to different businesses and teams’ particularities. And, due to its ever-expanding nature, every year we can foresee upcoming project management trends and predictions that are expected to bring even more advantages for the field. Understanding these predictions is what gives project managers and their employees the ability to be well-prepared for what comes and make smarter decisions.

But, which project management trends can we expect for 2022? In this article, we chose 5 big tendencies that can help professionals stay ahead of the game, meet new technologies and see where to invest in their professional development. Use this content as an opportunity to analyze how the predictions can affect your organization, and how you can prepare for these changes.

Trend nº 1: Project management for hybrid teams

In 2020, the world stopped and went into quarantine. Several businesses had to change their operations to fit the “work from home” format , and we had to go through a very complex and hard process of adaptation. This scenario continued until around the middle of 2021, when the advent of the vaccine was able to bring us a growing sense of normality again. But, the catch was that remote work became the new normal : People didn’t want to go back to the office , but some companies still wanted them there.

To please both parties, the hybrid system seemed to be the perfect alternative. A Fall 2021 study conducted by Google revealed that over 75% of survey respondents expect hybrid work to become a standard practice within their organization within the next three years. This is why, in 2022, it is predicted that the hybrid system will begin to be implemented, thus, remote project managers will now have to adapt their approaches and perspective to contemplate hybrid workers.

In a hybrid system, workers are able to choose their environment for the day. If you’re a manager, for example, your job is to know how to lead considering this change of circumstances. And as for hybrid project management, it will be necessary to blend approaches from a traditional PM environment and the remote world. In other words, all projects, tasks, data, and communication channels must be in one place, available for everyone in any given situation, whether they’re at the office or at home. For this, while working in a multi-project environment, it’s recommended to use a traditional approach for simple and clear parts and agile methodologies for more complex ones.

You may notice that this work format has encouraged more cross-team collaboration than ever before, and that is because, in order to make it work, employers and employees must overcome all the different circumstances, making clear integration and access to information their main focuses. The good news is that the tools required for effective collaboration are more affordable and available than ever. Apps like Slack and Google Chat make it easy to communicate with your team, and other messaging apps also have voice calling and video chat features.

Trend nº 2: Becoming data-oriented with BI and BA

As technology advances, project managers are increasing their use of data insights to make informed decisions to handle projects in a better way and escalate business growth. In 2022, data has a high chance of becoming a major protagonist when it comes to guiding project management measures and activities. Our prediction is that project professionals will rely even more on relevant insights through the use of Business Intelligence (BI) and Business Analysis (BA).

BI is considered a descriptive form of data analytics, responsible for presenting past and present insights into what has happened or what is currently happening in a particular process. These pieces of information give managers access to realistic metrics to operate with, as well as better visibility into projects, processes, and their results. On the other hand, BA is aimed at the future, it analyzes data to better predict challenges and adapt to provide improved outcomes.

Proper use of data can significantly reduce the guesswork out of the decision-making process and provide substantial support to guide teams and actions. D ata analysis also helps to create better project planning , risk estimation, and quality management, which means, if used correctly, all that data has the power to produce a lot of business value.

Project managers can use the collected data to be more assertive when forming teams, deciding the number of members, how to include and position each employee, what are the skill sets needed for a certain project, or the usual duration of each step and the project itself. Data can also prove valuable in helping project managers schedule work, allocate resources, increase efficiency, reduce costs, and more effectively manage risks . Great assistance, right?

Trend nº 3: Globally attracting remote and flexible workers

With globalization and the recent experience with remote work , companies realized they can reach more professionals than ever. Currently, there’s a growing tendency to hire out-of-state employees under free schedules, adapting the work to their necessities. Aside from that, the traditional 8-hour working day is gradually losing its relevance since it can be less effective depending on the employee’s habits or preferences.

However, by expanding even more hiring opportunities to remote and flexible workers, project managers can attract different types of professionals, for example, ambitious and active students who need to combine work shifts with their study time. Another great advantage is the opportunity of going global. With the advance of project management in different fields for different purposes, some projects require such specific skills that finding a professional in your city, state, or even country can be a real challenge. Luckily, remote work allows companies to look for that specialist anywhere in the world.

Still on the subject of remote work benefits, we know that 2022 is a promised year for the launch of new businesses that had to be put on hold due to the uncertainty of the past two years. We also know that, when companies are first created, they tend to invest their budget into promoting the brand’s services or products, which results in a lack of resources to cover and maintain other costs. Hiring remote workers can be a life-savior solution for these brand new companies since it prevents them from spending money to keep employees in the office when they are able to execute the same work from anywhere else.

Also, the freedom made possible by the work-from-home culture affects the productivity of work. The creation of projects, especially creative ones, is not routine work. Here, creators need freedom and more comfortable conditions in order to work more efficiently and show good results. For example, a remote employee can calmly wake up in the morning and plan an enjoyable, yet productive day, distributing tasks at will, only having to complete the work within a specified time frame. Thus, when creative people work with freedom, they don’t feel overstrained, using their brains to generate fresh ideas and direct them to the development of the project.

Trend nº 4: Automation, artificial intelligence and bots

In 2022, artificial intelligence in project management will be key to help automate the execution of daily operational tasks that don’t necessarily require human effort. This prediction is more of a long-awaited scenario for project professionals, but, it was necessary to wait until technology could turn it into reality. But, it’s important to clarify something: For companies to leverage AI to its fullest extent, it needs to be paired with human collaboration . Project management is not only about miscalculations, reporting and documentation. It’s also about human relationships that robots cannot build.

Project managers can use automation to perform actions from scheduling tasks to data visualization with the help of digital systems. Operations can be planned online, contributing to a quicker adaptation of employees to any changes. Machines also make more consistent decisions, therefore they organize processes faster.

Once project managers learn to leverage AI to automate processes, project execution will be much easier than before. It will be possible to create the right estimation of a project’s duration, costs, and progress, helping PMs predict realistic timelines for their project . Not only AI but machine learning and bots can have a big impact on project development. For example, it’s possible to configure a bot to send you daily reports about your projects or flag potential risks.

However, this influence goes beyond automating assignments, AI can also be quite helpful in obtaining performance insights, helping PMs make informed decisions based on the captured data. An example of a tech solution to implement in 2022 are chatbots, they are capable of conducting a dialogue with clients, directing them to the next step in their journey, whether it’s to acquire the product/service, just accessing helpful information, or solving issues without the participation of the manager directly, which makes it possible to free them from overload.

Trend nº 5: Higher demand for trained project management professionals

Since the popularization of project management, some professionals ended up becoming project managers “by accident”, this happens when they’re routinely expected to coordinate and manage projects in their workplace, yet, they’re not formally trained in such management. But, with the reset of habits caused by the pandemic, these unofficial PMs, and people in general, had more time to develop new skills and seek expertise in the field, consequently becoming trained professionals who are ready for the job market. With this increased offer in a skilled workforce, in 2022, companies will be able to demand more skilled and experienced project managers.

But, these higher demands are also due to technology becoming more and more complex, with project managers turning to advanced applications and tools to help them remain on top of their workflow. In  2022 businesses will likely be extra challenged by employee development, requiring new team members to settle in faster with optimized programs and managers to delegate tasks sooner.
