It is branch of mathematics in which we use literal numbers and statements symbolically. Literal numbers can be positive or negative, they are variables.

In algebra, we use two types of symbols, that is constants and variables.

A symbol which has a fixed value is known as Constant . For example 5, -2, 0, 2 ⁄ 5 , 5 ⁄ 3 , etc. are constant.

A symbol (letter) which can be given various numerical values is known as variable . As variables are usually denoted by letters, so it is also known as literal / literal numbers . Let's have a look at some examples.

In 2n, 2 is constant and 'n' is variable. But, together 2n is a variable. When n = 1, 2n = 2 x 1 = 2 When n = 2, 2n = 2 x 2 = 4 When n = 3, 2n = 2 x 3 = 6 So, when 'n' takes various values , 2n also change accordingly.

Similarly, n + 2, n −3, 5 −n , 2 ⁄ n and n ⁄ 5 are variables.

Hence a combination of constant and variable is also a variable.

A collection of constants and literals (variables) connected by one or more arithmetic operations is called an algebraic expression. Let's see some examples.

The various part of an algebraic expression separated by + / − sign are known as terms of the algebraic expression. Let's have a look at some examples.

Any factor of a term of an algebraic expression is called coefficient of the remaining factor of the term. Let's see some examples.

Let's consider the below given expression. 6abc + 4ab² − 4 In the term 6abc, Numerical coefficient = 6 Literal coefficient = abc Coefficient of a = 6bc

The terms having same literal coefficients are called like terms, otherwise, the terms are called unlike terms. Let's see some examples.

2xy, 3xy, 4xy, 5xy, −xy, 2 ⁄ 3 xy are like terms. 2m, 4mn, 3m²n are unlike terms.

An algebraic expression of the form a + bx + cx² + ..., where a, b, c, ... are constants and 'x' is a variable, is known as a polynomial in the variable 'x'. Let's see some examples.

i) 3 + 4x is a polynomial in 'x' of degree 1. ii) 2 − 3y + 5y² is a polynomial in 'y' of degree 2.

The degree of each term in a polynomial is the sum of the exponents of variables of the term and the degree of the polynomials is the greatest of the degrees of its terms. Let's see some examples.

Example 1. Find out the degree in the given polynomial.         3 + 4x Solution. In 3 + 4x, the degree of two terms 3 and 4x are 0 and 1 respectively. The degree of the polynomials is 1.

Example 2. Find out the degree in the given polynomial.         5y² + 3y − 2 Solution. In 5 y² + 3y −2, the degree of 3 terms 2, 1 and 0 respectively. So, the degree of the polynomial is 2.

Everything about Algebra

We have become acquainted with arithmetic operations on numbers, integers, and fractions. We have also studied different 2 dimensional and 3-dimensional figures. This was geometry which deals with the study of shapes now let us study another branch of Mathematics and that is algebra. Algebra is the branch of mathematics that deals with the study of mathematical symbols and rules for manipulating these symbols. Algebra Class 6 will help you get acquainted with the basics of algebra.

Algebra generally deals with letters that are expressed in the general form.it will help you to find the unknown values easily without computing the whole equation every time. Letters are treated as numbers so that all the operations can be carried out on them. So let us understand algebra class 6 in more detail.

Introduction to Algebra Class 6

We will be discussing the basics of algebra in the introduction to algebra class 6. Let us see some important concepts used in Algebra class 6,

Consider,

____ + 4 = 9

here we get 5 as the answer in the place of blank, but in algebra, we cannot write such blank space so we consider a letter x or y or a or b any letter in place of unknown values. Such that

So this letter x which is unknown to us is said to be a variable . A variable can be any letter from a to z. Using letters instead of unknown values makes it easier to find more unknown values either by writing blank spaces.

Variables are the letters used to express the unknown values. It keeps on changing.

Constants are the values that remain constant or a symbol that has any fixed numeric value .

Algebraic Expression:

A set of variables, constants, and mathematical operations forms an algebraic expression.

We know that variables have different values, they have no fixed value. They are numbers, that is why operations of addition,  subtraction,  multiplication, and division can be done on them.

Example:  3x + 4

Algebraic Equation

An equation is the set of variables, constants, and mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division balanced by an equal sign.

On the left side of the equation is the left-hand side(LHS) and the right side of the equation is the right-hand side(RHS). LHS and RHS are balanced by the same values.

Example: x + 4 = 7, where x = 3.

Algebra Formula Class 6

Here is the list of all the algebra formula class 6. It will make you solve your algebraic equations more easily.

Operations Used in Algebra

In algebra different operations used are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

Let a and b are two variables they can be written as-

Addition : a + b

Subtraction: a – b

Multiplication: a x b or a*b or ab

Division: x/y or x÷y

Some Common Rules for Algebraic Expressions

Algebraic expression class 6 have some common rules they are commutative property of addition when adding two variables the order of adding the variable doesn't change the sum of the equation. let a and b are two variables the commutative property states that, a + b = b + a. commutative property of multiplication interchanging the order of numbers in multiplication does not change the product. consider  variables a and b as in the case of addition, we can express the commutativity of multiplication of two numbers as- a x b = b x a distributive multiplication over the addition of numbers.  let a,b, and c be three variables, then, a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c let us see some examples for algebraic expressions class 6, solved examples.

Algebra is one the most important aspects of the discipline of Maths. Many fundamental problems of Maths are solved by Algebra, and hence the students are required to learn Algebra from the early Classes. Because many things that happen in our day-to-day life can easily be understood by Algebra, even the small things like profit and loss are somehow related to Algebra. And hence, the same topics are included in the Class 6 Maths syllabus.

Though Algebra is a completely practical subject, it still has theories to understand, because theories lead to practice. And hence it is important for the students to learn the theories of Algebra. But more often than not students may find the theories rather difficult to understand, and therefore decide to skip them, which ultimately results in poor understanding of the subject. And since the Algebra of Class 6 plays a fundamental role in the life of the students, skipping it, that is to say, Algebra is not a good idea at all.

To avoid all these problems, it is important for the students to have a good explanation of all the topics of Algebra in a simple and lucid language, that can be easily understood by the Class 6 Maths students. And hence Vedantu provides the same to the students of Class 6.

An Overview of the Algebra

To explain Algebra in the simplest manner possible, then we can say that Algebra is the study of the symbols of Mathematics and the rules that can manipulate these symbols. Algebra is the thread that unifies almost the whole of Mathematics. From elementary equation solving to the study of abstraction, Algebra includes all. The basic part of Algebra is known as elementary Algebra. And this elementary Algebra is an essential part of not only Mathematics, but also science, Engineering, and even medicines and economics.

Elementary Algebra also differs from arithmetic, specifically in the use of abstractions, because Algebra uses symbols or letters to represent a number that is unknown. We can take the example of here the letters x is unknown but by using the simple knowledge of Algebra we can substitute the 2 from the 6, and hence we can determine the value of x which is in this case 4. Algebra also provides a way for writing the formulas in such a manner that it becomes easy to understand and solve.

The word Algebra comes from the Arabic word “al-jabr” it means “the reunion of the parts which are broken” it was first used in the book title of the Persian Mathematician by the name of Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, who is also regarded as the father of Algebra.

2. We already know the rule for the pattern of letters L, C and F. Some of the letters from Q.1 (given above) give us the same rule as that given by L. Which are these? Why does this happen?

We know that T require only two matchsticks. So, the pattern for the letter T is 2n. Among all the letters given in question 1, only T and V are the letters which require two matchsticks. Hence, (a) and (d).

3. Cadets are marching in a parade. There are 5 cadets in a row. What is the rule which gives the number of cadets, given the number of rows? (Use n for the number of rows)

Let n be the number of rows

Number of cadets in a row = 5

Total number of cadets = number of cadets in a row × number of rows

4. If there are 50 mangoes in a box, how will you write the total number of mangoes in terms of the number of boxes? (Use b for the number of boxes.)

Let b be the number of boxes

Number of mangoes in a box = 50

Total number of mangoes = number of mangoes in a box × number of boxes

5. The teacher distributes 5 pencils per students. Can you tell how many pencils are needed, given the number of students? (Use s for the number of students.)

Let s be the number of students

Pencils given to each student = 5

Total number of pencils = number of pencils given to each student × number of students

6. A bird flies 1 kilometer in one minute. Can you express the distance covered by the birds in terms of its flying time in minutes? (Use t for flying time in minutes.)

Let t minutes be the flying times

Distance covered in one minute = 1 km

Distance covered in t minutes = Distance covered in one minute × Flying time

7. Radha is drawing a dot Rangoli (a beautiful pattern of lines joining dots) with chalk powder. She has 9 dots in a row. How many dots will her Rangoli have for r rows? How many dots are there if there are 8 rows? If there are 10 rows?

Number of dots in a row = 9

Number of rows = r

Total number of dots in r rows = Number of dots in a row × number of rows

Number of dots in 8 rows = 8 × 9

Number of dots in 10 rows = 10 × 9

8. Leela is Radha’s younger sister. Leela is 4 years younger than Radha. Can you write Leela’s age in terms of Radha’s age? Take Radha’s age to be x years.

Let Radha’s age be x years

Leela’s age = 4 years younger than Radha

= (x – 4) years

9. Mother has made laddus. She gives some laddus to guests and family members; still 5 laddus remain. If the number of laddus mother gave away is l, how many laddus did she make?

Number of laddus mother gave = l

Remaining laddus = 5

Total number of laddus = number of laddus given away by mother + number of laddus remaining

= (l + 5) laddus

10. Oranges are to be transferred from larger boxes into smaller boxes. When a large box is emptied, the oranges from it fill two smaller boxes and still 10 oranges remain outside. If the number of oranges in a small box are taken to be x, what is the number of oranges in the larger box?

Number of oranges in a small box = x

Number of oranges in two small boxes = 2x

Number of oranges remaining = 10

Number of oranges in large box = number of oranges in two small boxes + number of oranges remained

11. (a) Look at the following matchstick pattern of squares (Fig 11.6). The squares are not separate. Two neighbouring squares have a common matchstick. Observe the patterns and find the rule that gives the number of matchsticks

NCERT Solutions for Class 6 Maths Chapter 11 Exercise 11.1 - 15

in terms of the number of squares. (Hint: If you remove vertical stick at the end, you will get a pattern of Cs)

(b) Fig 11.7 gives a matchstick pattern of triangles. As in Exercise 11 (a) above, find the general rule that gives the number of matchsticks in terms of the number of triangles.

NCERT Solutions for Class 6 Maths Chapter 11 Exercise 11.1 - 16

(a) We may observe that in the given matchstick pattern, the number of matchsticks are 4, 7, 10 and 13, which is 1 more than thrice the number of squares in the pattern

Therefore, the pattern is 3x + 1, where x is the number of squares

(b) We may observe that in the given matchstick pattern, the number of matchsticks are 3, 5, 7 and 9, which is 1 more than twice the number of triangles in the pattern.

Therefore, the pattern is 2x + 1, where x is the number of triangles.
