How to Change Your Microsoft Teams Background
Update your background on Microsoft Teams

Want to make your meetings more exciting by changing your Microsoft Teams background?
Changing your background could be just the thing. Microsoft Teams, one of the market leaders in the collaboration landscape, offers one of two ways for users to transform their backgrounds . You can blur out what’s happening behind you, smudging your messy office into a grey mess. Or, if you prefer, you can choose from a series of custom backgrounds to replace your real-life office.
- Discover more Microsoft 365 news on our sister website, Office Today
- Read the latest Microsoft Teams news here
While the blurred background option was acceptable for a while, most of today’s users will much prefer the custom route. What could be better than being on the beach or the moon during your end-of-week meeting?
Changing your Background with Microsoft Teams
There are two options for changing your background on Microsoft Teams. The first is to add your background before starting the meeting, ensuring everything looks great before you jump into a call. However, if you want to test the waters first and see what kind of backgrounds other people are using before you do anything, you can add a background during a meeting too.
To add your background before you start the meeting, start your video conversation as usual, and you should find yourself at the “joining” screen, where you can see what your video feed looks like and fiddle with the settings.
- Make sure your video is turned on, then toggle your background settings control, located between the audio and video control buttons.
- The “Background settings” column will appear on the right of the screen. Use this to blur your background or choose a stock background.
- You can also add “custom backgrounds by uploading your images or choosing from a collection online. We’ll cover how to do this later
- Your background change will stay in effect throughout your meeting until you decide to change it again. You can change your background multiple times throughout your meeting

There’s no need for a greenscreen or anything similar with Microsoft Teams custom backgrounds. The highly-trained intelligent model will automatically separate you from your background.
Remember, you can also choose to “blur” your background, but this doesn’t look as attractive as a picture offered by a virtual background.

Changing Your Background In-Meeting
If you join a meeting and discover that everyone has beautiful backgrounds – but you have a messy bookcase behind you, you can change things mid-meeting. Within your meeting, click on the three dots in the middle of the button bar at the top of your screen. Next:
- Select the “Show background effects” option”, and you’ll be taken to the background settings column on the right of your screen we mentioned above. This bar will allow you to blur or change your background. Again, you can also upload custom backgrounds.
- If you’re in the middle of a meeting and want to make sure your background looks excellent before committing to it, click the “Preview” button. This will show what other people will likely see when you apply your new background.
- Once you’re happy with how your background looks, click the “Apply” button or “Stop preview” if you want to go back to the previous background.

Again, you can apply a custom background to a meeting. There’s also the option to “blur” if you want to keep the feel of your natural environment without as much detail.
How to Change Meeting Backgrounds on Mobile
The options above show you how to apply new backgrounds to your meeting video on the standard desktop version of Teams (or the web-based app). However, if you’re joining from mobile, there are slightly different processes to go through.
Once again, you can change your background in or before the meeting. If you want to change the background before your meeting, set up the video conversation as usual, and select the “Background effects” button at the top of the screen:
- When the background options appear below your video stream, you can click on “blur” to make the mess behind you disappear or click on one of the images provided
- If you want to upload a background of your own, click the “plus” sign, and upload your image from your device. You’ll need a .BMP, .PNG, or .JPG file
- Click on “done”. Your new background should continue in all of your calls and meetings until you decide to change it again
If you want to change your background mid-meeting, the process is very similar to what it would be on the desktop. Click on your meeting or call controls and:
- Select “More Options” (…), then “Background Effects.”
- Choose whether you want to blur your image, add a background offered by Microsoft, or upload your background.
- Use the “Done” button to confirm the background you want to use. You’ll also be able to check your background before committing to it.
How to Add Backgrounds
Microsoft has since introduced the opportunity to implement custom background effects for all Teams users.
You must follow the above steps to “Show background effects” in your meeting. At the top of the list of options you’re given from Microsoft, including the “blur” feature, you should see a button that says: “+ Add New”.
Microsoft will allow you to either upload background effects directly from your computer or access a wide variety of high-quality images from the web. If you’re adding a picture from your computer, ensure it’s high-quality, you only use JPG, PNG, or BMP files.
Visit the “ Explore Backgrounds ” page on Microsoft’s website if you want to see some of the latest options provided by the company. Everything from FOX backgrounds taken from your favorite shows and sporting events to NBC backgrounds, Black history month, Pride, and Xbox. You can even place yourself in front of a nostalgic scene.

The Xbox backgrounds available are all free to use, so you should be able to download a wide selection whenever you feel like shaking things up.
Remember to preview your background before applying it.
Are There Any Other Ways to Change Your Background?
Although not technically the same as changing your background, there is an alternative option if you want to unify your entire team with the same background effect. Together Mode allows users to feel like they share the same common space, like an auditorium. This feature is helpful if you want to create a sense of community in a hybrid space.
You can switch on “Together Mode” in Teams by clicking on your profile before you start the meeting and selecting the “Settings” option. Next, select:
- Enable the toggle for “New Meeting Experience”.
- Place a call or start a meeting (With at least five people). You can add up to 49 people in total.
- Click the three dots at the top of the screen and select “Together Mode”
Make the Most of Your Custom Backgrounds
Adding custom backgrounds to your meetings with Microsoft Teams has never been easier.
We also recommend ensuring that you have an extremely high-quality image as your background if you want it to look awesome. Stick to something with a high resolution and avoid anything that might have a copyright attached to it ( see our article ). If in doubt, use the Microsoft-approved backgrounds.
Next time you join a meeting, you should be able to easily select your Background Effects tab and choose between a custom background or blur option!

How To Change Background On Microsoft Teams

Knowing how to change the background on Microsoft Teams is one of the most important things to learn if you use this platform for meetings.
We all know what it’s like to have a background that you need to hide. Maybe you’re in a busy coffee shop that will cause a distraction or maybe your house is particularly messy. Whatever the case, you can change your background to help you look more professional.
You can also create your own background, which is a great way to represent your brand during meetings.

Changing your background during a virtual meeting can help you look more professional. Here’s how to change background on Microsoft Teams.
It’s certainly not ideal to join a meeting with a busy background, only to change your background five minutes into the meeting. The best approach is to join the meeting with the background of your choice.
Follow these steps to change your background on Microsoft Teams before joining a meeting:
- When you set up your video and audio preferences before joining a meeting, select the Background filters button. You can find this button below the video preview image.

*Note: If you aren’t sure which to choose, opting to blur your background is always a good move. This keeps your image in good focus, with your background blurred. It’s not distracting, but it hides whatever is behind you.

In many cases, you will join a meeting and only then find that your background is too distracting. Here are the steps you can take to change your background in Microsoft Teams while you are in a meeting:

You can select Preview once you have chosen your background. This lets you see what the background will look like before you apply it. Nobody else in the meeting will see this.
When you are happy with your background, select Apply. Now your new background is in action.
When you want to remove your background, select the button to turn off background effects. This is the button that depicts a circle with a diagonal line through it.
How To Change Your Teams Meeting Background On Mobile
Changing your Microsoft Teams background on a mobile device follows the same general process. This won’t change whether you are on an Android or iOS device.
Follow these five simple steps for all mobile devices
- Select the Settings button while you are getting ready for the meeting.
- Tap on Background effects .
- A range of background options will appear below your image. Select the option you like the most.
- Press Done .
- Select the No background option (circle with a diagonal line going through it) button to turn off your background.
Here’s how to change your background while you’re in a meeting on your mobile device:
- Go to your meeting controls buttons and tap on More options (the three dots).
- Tap on the Background effects button.
- Choose the background you like.
- Tap Done . Now your background has been changed.
If you don’t want to use the generic Microsoft Teams backgrounds, you can always upload your own. This is can be a great way to customize your meetings with your brand colors or logo.
Start by creating your own background image. Save this in a .JPG, .PNG, or .BMP file on your device. Then, when changing your background, navigate to the background effects options and then select Add new.
Now you can choose the background image file from your device and use this as your background. The file will save into your selected background options, so you can use it again if you ever need to change to a custom background.
Linux users aren’t able to access the background changing feature on Microsoft Teams. If you’re using Microsoft teams through optimized virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) then you won’t be able to access background effects either.
Some devices don’t have the option to change background effects. You will know this if you do not see the Background filters option in your menu.
It’s always best to test out backgrounds before using them in important meetings. In some cases, parts of a user’s face or hair might get distorted or blurred in the background. If you struggle to find a background that works, using the blur feature is generally the most effective.
Background filters are one of the best features of Microsoft Teams. The great thing is that there are so many different background options that you can choose from. This can make meetings fun, or it can help you to look more professional if your actual background needs to be hidden.
Follow the strategies listed above, and you will be able to change your background on any kind of device. This can help you take your Teams meetings to a whole new level.

While Zoom remains popular for its ease of use and features such as the ability to pop in different backgrounds , it’s not the only video meeting app out there that lets you do those things. For example, Microsoft’s Teams office communications app also allows you to tweak your meeting background. Here, we’ll show you how to change your background for a Teams videoconference.
If you want to select a background before you officially begin the meeting:
- Start your Teams video meeting . You’ll find yourself at the intermediate screen.
- Make sure that video is toggled on in the button bar near the bottom of the screen, then toggle on the background settings control (located between the video and audio controls)
- A “Background settings” column will appear on the right. Use that to blur your real background or choose from several different images to provide a false background.
:format(webp)/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/22215492/Screen_Shot_2021_01_05_at_1.19.21_PM.png)
- If you want to add your own image, click the “Add new” link at the top of the column. You can then choose an image from your computer’s files, which will be added to the available backgrounds.
- When you do change your background, the change will stay in effect through your other meetings until you change it again.
If you’ve already started the meeting (or you’ve joined somebody else’s meeting), you can still change your background.
- Click on the three dots in the middle of the button bar at the bottom of the screen and select “Show background effects.” You’ll get the same “Background settings” column on the right, with the same ability to blur your background, change it, or add a new one.
:format(webp)/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/22215496/Screen_Shot_2021_01_05_at_1.22.51_PM.png)
- If you’re in the middle of a meeting and want to test the background, click on “Preview” in the “Background settings” column. You’ll be able to see the effect in a small window at the bottom of the column; nobody else in your meeting will see it.
- Once you’re happy with your new background, click on “Apply” (or just select “Stop preview” if you want to go back to your previous background)

How to change your background on Microsoft Teams before or during a meeting
- You can change your background on Microsoft Teams both before and during meetings, similar to many other video-conferencing apps.
- Microsoft Teams is a video-conferencing app, like Zoom, that allows people and teams to meet face-to-face while working remotely.
Microsoft Teams , like Zoom , is an app that allows people to connect face-to-face remotely, in one-on-one conversations as well as in groups.
This app is particularly useful for workplaces, especially since remote work has become the norm and people have had to find other ways to hold meetings with their coworkers.
If you fall into this category, you've no doubt already faced some of the perils and pitfalls of the virtual meeting. Microphone not working, forgetting to mute yourself, forgetting to unmute yourself, strange objects in the background, letting everyone see you're wearing sweatpants with your work shirt, etc.
While not all of these issues are ones that can be avoided, the background issue is. You can change your background in a Microsoft Teams meeting before you even join — so if you have a cluttered or messy background, or something else you'd rather your coworkers not see, they don't have to.
How to change your background on Microsoft Teams before a meeting
To change your background before a meeting, all you need to do is toggle the switch between the video and microphone switches — which should appear next to an icon of a person with a striped background — to the on position. Background options will appear in the right-hand sidebar, if you have any. You can either blur your background or replace it with an image. If using your own image, select "Add new."
Note: If you're a Linux user or are using the virtual desktop optimized (VDI) version of Teams, background options won't be accessible.
How to change your background on Microsoft Teams during a meeting
There may also be cause for you to change your background after the meeting begins — maybe to get rid of a distracting element that just appeared, or to make the other people in the meeting laugh or smile. To do this:
1. In the toolbar, click the ellipsis to bring up a "More actions" menu.
2. Select "Show background effects" to bring up a sidebar menu on the right of your screen.
3. Choose a background from the sidebar menu. You will be given the option to blur your background or use a custom image. To upload a default image, select "Add new."
Note that when this menu appears, your video will stop being visible to others in your group until you click "Apply and turn on video."
When you find one you like, you can either simply click that button right away, or you can preview it first to make sure it's up to par.

On Microsoft Teams , it’s possible to change the background appearance of a video call or meeting with a blur, images with different scenes, or custom images, whether you use the app on Windows 11 , 10, macOS, Linux, Android, or iOS.
This feature is perfect for hiding the mess in your office, location, or for whatever other reason. (Since this functionality is not perfect, blurring or replacing the background might not prevent sensitive information from being visible to other people.)
This guide will teach you the different ways you use to change the background appearance of a video call using Microsoft Teams.
