Aspiring engineers in Alabama (AL) enjoy a state with abundant educational programs and a relatively promising employment outlook in the field. By illustration, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2016) reported that there were 42,800 engineers and architectural professionals currently working in Alabama, which comprises just over two percent of all occupations statewide. Furthermore, job openings will likely only continue to grow in the future. Bachelor of Science in Information Systems – University of Alabama at Birmingham

At the University of Alabama at Birmingham , aspiring computer or software engineers can pursue an online BS in information systems. This program requires 24 credit-hours of information systems core courses and 21 credit-hours of upper level core courses, along with a number of other classes; overall, students can expect to study subjects such as business programming, database management, enterprise systems, systems analysis, and project management, to name a few. This program can be completed in as few as four years and tuition is set at $437 per semester-hour of classes.

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering – University of Alabama

The University of Alabama of Tuscaloosa provides an online BS in mechanical engineering through its College of Continuing Studies. This 128-credit hour program costs approximately $45,440, although this does not include any associated costs or fees. Notably, this program is accredited by ABET and includes courses on statics, mechanics of materials, heat transfer, engineering analysis, and dynamic systems, among a wide array of others. Tuition for all graduate students is set at $325 per credit-hour, making the total cost of the program $4,875.

Graduate Certificate in Environmental Health and Safety Management – University of Alabama

The University of Alabama College of Continuing Studies allows current environmental or civil engineers to pursue a degree in a complementary discipline to hone one’s leadership potential. This online graduate certificate in environmental health and safety management comprises 15 credit-hours and costs $375 per credit, or $5,625 altogether. It includes courses such as the introduction to environmental health and safety management; occupational health and safety law; health and safety regulations and regulatory compliance; practical statistics for safety professionals; and environmental law. Furthermore, students may apply their completed coursework toward a master of science in environmental health and safety management.

Online Engineering Programs – What to Consider

For many, the prospects of a growing industry and a competitive salary are enough to pursue a career in this field, but all prospective students are advised to thoroughly research their online programs of interest prior to applying. Among other questions, here are some of the most important considerations:

• Can the program be completed entirely online? Some programs require attendance, while others allow students to complete the entire program from a distance.
• What is the cost of the program? Prospective students should be aware that some programs charge additional costs and fees on top of tuition.
• How long does it take to complete the program? Can it be completed part-time? A majority of programs have an expected completion window.
• Is a thesis required? Those students who have an opinion on writing a thesis should ensure they are fully aware of the requirements before enrolling.
• What have past graduates accomplished or where have they secured employment? Examining past students’ outcomes is important to determine whether a given program can help enrollees meet their own professional objectives.

Additionally, applicants should search for programs that are accredited and that retain appropriate state authorization status.

Accreditation

In general, attending an accredited engineering program is not necessary to begin working as an engineer; however, many employers only offer positions to those applicants whose program was accredited. Also, students in unaccredited programs may not qualify for financial aid opportunities or professional certification following graduation. As such, prospective students should search for programs that have been accredited by one of the following organizations, which are broken down by national, programmatic, and regional levels:

State Authorization

While searching for an accredited engineering program is highly suggested, finding a program that retains proper state authorization status is necessary. To elaborate, students are only allowed to study at programs that are eligible to operate in their state of residence; this information is typically listed on state authorization pages (e.g., University of Alabama ), and for those which don’t, interested students should contact admissions offices to determine eligibility.

Admissions Requirements

Prospective students should be encouraged to learn that admissions requirements are similar across on-campus and distance-based programs, albeit with variations by degree level. Specifically, many online undergraduate engineering degrees will have fairly similar requirements, and the same can be said for graduate and certificate programs.

For example, here are the admissions requirements for online engineering degree programs (undergraduate) at the University of Alabama :

• A high school diploma or GED
• A GPA of 2.5 for those who graduate four years before the enrollment date, or 3.0 for those who graduated within four years

Auburn Engineering to offer new artificial intelligence programs beginning this fall

Auburn Engineering’s Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) will offer three artificial intelligence (AI) engineering degree and certificate programs beginning in Fall 2024.

The programs — master’s degree in AI engineering, graduate certificate in AI engineering and undergraduate certificate in AI engineering — will provide various levels of technical depth to broaden students’ skillsets as they enter the workforce, CSSE Chair Hari Narayanan, said.

“Having a solid artificial intelligence education is a growing demand for the engineering workforce and we look forward to supplying organizations with highly skilled graduates,” Narayanan said. “Employers are looking for people with AI-related skills… even in the most unlikely places. Artificial intelligence promises to revolutionize sectors such as business, defense, education, government and health care. To succeed in these roles, people need to understand how to utilize AI systems productively and efficiently. We aim to meet that need.”

The 30-hour master’s degree curriculum in AI engineering, which can be taken online or on-campus, is open to all students who have already earned a baccalaureate degree from an institution of recognized standing, either in computer science, software engineering, or another STEM discipline, and to those who have professional experience related to computing or IT and familiarity with mathematics. This program requires students to take three core courses — artificial intelligence, machine learning and data mining — and seven technical electives related to AI.

“The graduate program provides in-depth training, including the possibility for students to specialize,” Narayanan said. “For example, a student could say, ‘I want in-depth training in AI, but I also want to know how to use it within cyber security, computer networks, or something else.’”

In the graduate program, students will learn how to:

• Develop algorithms and methodologies for AI and machine learning systems and technologies.
• Incorporate software engineering principles to analyze, design and implement AI and machine learning software.
• Apply AI and machine learning techniques to solve complex engineering problems and problems of societal importance.
• Deliver written and oral presentations to non-technical and technical audiences.

Like the standard graduate degree program, admission into the graduate certificate program in AI engineering is open to all students with a baccalaureate degree from an institution of recognized standing, either in computer science, software engineering, another STEM discipline or have relevant professional experience and background knowledge.

“The graduate certificate might be appealing to students who have been working within industry for a while and want to upskill,” Narayanan said. “Maybe not enough to design and build a new AI system, but enough to make decisions about what AI technologies and tools to use and how best to use them.”

This 12-hour program, available on-campus or online, includes courses in AI, machine learning and data mining, along with an approved AI-related elective.

Narayaran said the undergraduate certificate in AI engineering is currently open only to CSSE majors.

“Students in this program will develop the deep technical knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems and issues faced by government, industry and society,” he said. “Blending this AI certificate with their chosen CSSE major in computer science or software engineering can be very advantageous for these students.”

The undergraduate certificate program’s 12-hour curriculum models the graduate certificate and includes courses in AI, machine learning and data mining with an approved AI-related elective.

“Developing cutting-edge programs like these — and meeting the growing needs of industry — is expected of leading engineering colleges in the nation,” Narayanan said. “In fact, these programs on engineering AI systems are the first of their kind in Alabama.”

Among the largest departments at Auburn University, CSSE currently offers a variety of degree and certificate programs, including B.S. in Computer Science, Bachelor of Software Engineering, Bachelor of Computer Science (online), Computer Science Minor, Undergraduate Cyber Defense Certificate, M.S. in Computer Science and Software Engineering (thesis or non-thesis options), M.S. in Cybersecurity Engineering, Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity Engineering, M.S. in Data Science and Engineering (data science or data engineering options), Graduate Certificate in Data Engineering, and Doctor of Philosophy.

UGA launches new online M.S. in civil engineering

The fully online program spans several distinctive areas within civil engineering, including structural and geotechnical engineering, project and construction management, and more. Students are offered a wealth of opportunities to hone their skills and experience real-world cases and projects facilitated by seasoned industry professionals. 

“The online M.S. degree in civil engineering mirrors the rigorous curriculum of our esteemed campus-based program, is taught by the same distinguished faculty, and can be completed in as little as two years, without affecting full-time work schedules,” said Mi G. Chorzepa, faculty director of the new online program. “I hope that my classes will allow students to gain real-world project experiences while also mastering a commitment strategy.”

The program’s industry collaborators represent a variety of sectors, including bridge engineering, fabrication, contractoring, state DOT, non-destructive testing, structural and geotechnical modeling, and the comprehensive integration of infrastructure systems. The diverse range of expertise equips students with a broad spectrum of knowledge and skills in engineering services.

UGA’s online M.S. in civil engineering cultivates a collaborative learning environment with close interaction among peers, faculty, and industry professionals. The curriculum follows a block format, with one course every eight weeks, including innovative studio courses. Johns Hopkins graduate programs again ranked among nation's best

'u.s. news & world report' includes 38 jhu programs among the top 10 in the u.s. in its annual rankings, including no. 1 ranked programs in nursing and public health.

Johns Hopkins University has 38 graduate schools, academic programs, and specialties ranked among the top 10 in the nation, including nine with No. 1 rankings, according to the latest edition of "Best Graduate Schools" from U.S. News & World Report , published earlier today.

Two schools at Hopkins—the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the School of Nursing —earned No. 1 rankings overall, and the School of Education entered the top 10, according to U.S. News & World Report .

Portions of the publication's annual list were released today but rankings for schools of medicine and engineering were delayed and will be released at a later date.

Among the new rankings released today:

The School of Nursing's DNP program ranked No. 1 for the third year in a row. Its master's degree programs tied at No. 1, up from No. 2 last year. In gerontology, the school moved up two spots to No. 1 for primary care, and up one spot to No. 2 for acute care. In other specialty areas, the School of Nursing's doctoral programs ranked:

• Psychiatric/mental health: No. 1
• Family: No. 3 (tied)
• Leadership: No. 4 (tied)
• Nursing Anesthesia: No. 36 (tie)

Public Health

The Bloomberg School retained its longtime No. 1 overall ranking among public health programs—it has held the top spot since 1994, the year the rankings began. In specialty areas, the Bloomberg School ranked:

• Environmental Health Sciences: No. 1
• Epidemiology: No. 1
• Health Policy and Management (Public Health): No. 1
• Social and Behavioral Sciences: No. 1
• Biostatistics: No. 2

Johns Hopkins tied at No. 8 in the Education category, up from No. 13 last year. The school also tied at No. 23 in higher education administration programs.

Public Affairs

Overall, Johns Hopkins programs in public affairs tied at No. 39. In subcategories, Johns Hopkins tied at No. 6 in Health Policy and Management (Public Affairs), No. 11 in International/Global Policy and Administration, and tied at No. 35 in Public Policy Analysis.

U.S. News & World Report updates some of its rankings each year and republishes the most recent rankings in other areas. Among the republished rankings for Hopkins, which are still current:

Biological Sciences

Hopkins is tied for No. 6 overall with six top 10 specialty rankings:

• Molecular biology: No. 3 (tie)
• Cell biology: No. 4
• Neuroscience: No. 4 (tie)
• Immunology: No. 5
• Genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics: No. 6 (tie)
• Biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology: No. 8

Biostatistics

Hopkins is ranked No. 1 (tie) for Biostatistics at the doctoral level. (Note: U.S. News & World Report also ranks biostatistics as a sub-category of public health, where Hopkins is No. 2.)

The university is tied at No. 20 in Chemistry and ranks No. 9 in the Biochemistry subcategory.

Computer Science

The university is tied for No. 24 overall and tied at No. 21 in the specialty of Artificial Intelligence.

Earth Sciences

The university is tied at No. 30 in Earth Sciences.

Johns Hopkins' program in economics is tied at No. 22.

English tied at No. 13 overall with the following specialty rankings:

• Literary criticism and theory: No. 3
• British literature: No. 10 (tie)
• American literature after 1865: No. 17

Health Care Management

The university is No. 7.

Johns Hopkins ranks No. 10 overall, with the following specialty rankings:

• African-American history: No. 3 (tie)
• Cultural history: No. 4 (tie)
• U.S. Colonial history: No. 5 (tie)
• Women's history: No. 6 (tie)
• African history: No. 7 (tie)
• European history: No. 7 (tie)
• Modern U.S. history: No. 16 (tie)

Mathematics

Johns Hopkins is tied at No. 20 in Mathematics with the following specialty rankings: + Analysis: No. 18 (tie) + Algebra: No. 23 (tie) + Applied Math: No. 25

Overall, the university is tied at No. 13 with the following specialty rankings: + Living Systems: No. 5 (tie) + Cosmology: No. 7 + Condensed Matter: No. 13 (tie)

Political science

Overall, political science is tied at No. 41. In sub-categories, Johns Hopkins ranked: + Political theory: No. 8 (tie) + International politics: No. 24 (tie)

The university's graduate program in psychology is tied at No. 12 overall and tied at No. 5 in the subcategory of behavioral neuroscience.

Overall, sociology is tied at No. 29. The sub-category of sociology of population is tied at No. 17.

U.S. News & World Report Ranks UH Graduate Programs Among Nation’s Best in 2024

Four UH Graduate Programs Rank in Top 10, 17 in Top 50

The University of Houston is once again proving that it is a powerhouse in graduate education, with 13 of its programs securing spots among the top 50 nationwide in the 2024 U.S. News & World Report graduate program rankings, released today. Three engineering programs maintain their top 50 rank pending the release of 2024 engineering rankings, which have been delayed. In total, UH has 17 programs in the top 50.

A total of four UH graduate programs rank in the top 10 nationwide, including three from the UH Law Center: Health Care Law (No. 7), Part-Time Law (No. 8) and Intellectual Property Law (No. 8). The Petroleum Engineering program in the Cullen College of Engineering maintains its No. 9 ranking pending forthcoming rankings in the discipline. Since 2020, UH has seen a 70% increase in the number of graduate programs earning a top 50 ranking.

“Being acknowledged among the nation's top performers in these vital fields is truly gratifying and affirms the national prestige of these programs and the caliber of faculty, staff and students,” said Diane Z. Chase, UH senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.  “Delivering top-tier professional and graduate programs and positioning students for success in their respective fields of graduate study is integral to our vision of ascending as a top 50 public university.”

This year, nine UH Law Center specialty programs are ranked among the Top 50 in the country, with three ranked No. 1 in the state of Texas.

Each year, U.S. News ranks professional school programs in business, education, engineering, law, medicine, and nursing, including specialties in each area. The rankings are based on enrollment numbers, job placement rates, faculty statistics, and other essential quality indicators designed to help prospective students make informed decisions.

“Deciding where to attend graduate school can be formidable, considering the wealth of schools with distinctive and quality programs,” said LaMont Jones, Ed.D., managing editor for Education at U.S. News. “The Best Graduate Schools rankings and related content empower prospective students to choose the best fi t for their educational needs and ultimately achieve career success.”

The top programs in the nation earn “best of” recognition by U.S. News. UH made the following 2024 graduate program lists:

• Best Health Schools
• Best Public Affairs Schools
• Best Science Schools
• Best Law Schools
• Best Education Schools
