Neuromotor Control & Rehab Core Concentration: This core concentration area of study consists of two facets: neuromotor science and motor control. Relevant techniques for research might include brain imaging, transcranial magnetic stimulation, startle probes, peripheral nerve stimulation or electroencephalography each of which are available to the trainees. Motor control refers to knowledge about the principles of interaction between neural/physiological, biomechanical, behavioral and developmental systems underlying movement function and dysfunction that can inform rehabilitation assessments and interventions. Relevant techniques for research might include physiological and biomechanical analyses, adaptation and learning paradigms, and clinical tests of movement function. Students are expected to have a knowledge-base in both areas but the specific applications will depend on their research questions.

Human Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences PhD

Our doctoral students conduct research that address several factors in human movement, rehabilitation, cognition, behavior and communication science, including but not limited to: 

  • Health promotion across the lifespan from early childhood to aging 
  • Psychology of human movement and communication 
  • Exercise, speech and cognitive neuroscience  
  • Rehabilitation and assistive technology 
  • Virtual environments for rehabilitation 
  • Biomechanics and ergonomics 
  • Science of human communication and neurodevelopment 

Students must complete 32 credit hours of courses, complete a comprehensive exam, and publish a doctoral dissertation. The course requirements include five required courses and then a set of electives determined by the student and their research advisor to provide the individual set of skills needed for their research project and career.

Our graduates are well-prepared to enter into a number of post-doctoral career paths including:

  • Industrial research positions
  • Government consultants
  • Post-doctoral or junior faculty positions in academic institutions in either technology programs or schools of health science, public health, or medicine

Our program does not have specific requirements with regard to classes applicants must take or have taken prior to applying. While competitive applicants typically already possess an advanced degree, we will consider exceptionally qualified applicants with a bachelor’s degree, as well.

Completed application All applications must be submitted through the University PhD application system. In addition to the application, applicants must submit a resume and a personal statement.

Personal statement Your personal statement should discuss how your background informs your research interests. It should demonstrate how your training and experience motivates you to pursue a type of research. The type of research doesn’t have to be specific, but it should also not be too general (e.g. movement and rehabilitation sciences). Prospective students are highly encouraged to reach out to research faculty in the program with overlapping areas of interest.

Our program focuses on research within a highly interdisciplinary setting using multidisciplinary and multidimensional concepts of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health model (ICF). It operates with the support of University based research activities at the interface of rehabilitation, neuroscience, and movement sciences that span the colleges of the university. All students will have exposure to basic, translational, and applied research training since these are considered hallmarks of the program. Can i transfer credits and can i waive submitting official test scores.

A maximum of 9 semester/12 quarter hours of credit obtained at another institution may be accepted towards the degree, provided the credits consist of work taken at the graduate level for graduate credit, carry grades of 3.000 (B) or better, and have not been used toward any other degree. These courses must have been taken within 5 years prior to the transfer.

How much does the program cost and what kind of funding is available?

Doctoral students in the Human Movement and Rehabilitation Science PhD program pay per credit taken. The latest cost per credit for Bouve College of Health Sciences programs can be found on Northeastern’s Student Financial Services webpage.

Our program offers a select number of graduate assistantships for doctoral students, which covers tuition and includes a yearly stipend in exchange for 20 hours of work each week. You do not need to do anything further than submitting an application to the Program to be considered for a graduate assistantship.

Can I be waived from submitting official test scores?

Applications to the Human Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences PhD program must include GRE scores (taken within the past five years) from all applicants. This requirement cannot be waived.

In addition, TOEFL scores are required from all international applicants who have received degrees from institutions outside the United States. Guidelines for submitting a request to waive the TOEFL requirement are outlined in the Admissions section.

The PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science prepares researchers, educators, and leaders in Rehabilitation Science to contribute to the development of rehabilitation practice, research, and policy. Rehabilitation Science is an interdisciplinary field that includes basic and applied research from health sciences, social sciences, engineering, and related fields.

Learning Objectives

Graduates of the PhD program will be expected to demonstrate competence relative to the following goals:

  • Understand Rehabilitation Science and biopsychosocial constructs of disability, and apply this information to develop excellence in research, education, service delivery, and policy development and interpretation.
  • Understand the unique role and contribution to Rehabilitation Science of entering disciplines (e.g., physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, prosthetics and orthotics, rehabilitation counseling, and other rehabilitation-related professions); as well as appreciating integration and synergy across these disciplines.
  • Engage in preparation as a teacher of rehabilitation science and in the student’s respective discipline.
  • Critically evaluate and synthesize research in Rehabilitation Science.
  • Understand research methods relevant to Rehabilitation Science.
  • Design and implement innovative research relevant to Rehabilitation Science.
  • Take a leadership role in team science.
  • Design and deliver scholarly presentations and facilitate effective discussions.
  • Disseminate research and other scholarly products/manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and other venues appropriate to the field of rehabilitation science.
  • Effectively design, implement and evaluate instruction related to a focused area of study and reflecting a Rehabilitation Science perspective.

The PhD in Rehabilitation Science curriculum is founded on a biopsychosocial framework and a commitment to interdisciplinary research and interprofessional practice. Though we expect each student's pathway to be highly individualized, all students will complete specific requirements:

  • A seven-quarter core course series (21 credits)
  • A seven-quarter professional development seminar series (7 credits)
  • Extensive coursework and/or independent study in research methods, including research ethics (minimum of 18 credits)
  • Coursework and practicum experiences in teaching (minimum of 5 credits)
  • Three cognates (areas of study) specific to the student’s individual interests and or goals (minimum of 6 credits each). Each cognate will include a series of courses and/or independent studies.

In addition to these requirements, the curriculum for each student will include 1) an early research experience, including participation in a mentor’s research culminating in the completion of a manuscript and scholarly presentation, 2) completion of the General Examination, and 3) successful defense of the Dissertation. 

Credit from other universities

Credits from other universities cannot be transferred to UW to count towards these requirements; however, some coursework pursued to fulfill these requirements can be adjusted to ensure students are moving beyond their current knowledge and skill set.

The PhD program admits a new cohort of students every other year on even-numbered years. The application deadline is January 15 of even-numbered years for entry into the program in September of that year. Potential applicants may reach out to  faculty  if they are interested in talking with faculty members to learn about their research. Applicants do not need to have identified a mentor prior to application. Matching students with mentors is completed as part of the application process.

(We recommend September, October, or November). This informational meeting does not have to be in person but must be completed for your application to be considered. Additional interviews with the PhD Program Core Faculty and/or potential mentors may be scheduled during the application review phase. Eligibility criteria

Prospective students typically have backgrounds in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, rehabilitation counseling, prosthetics & orthotics, medicine, nursing, engineering, or other fields related to Rehabilitation Science.

In addition, all applicants will be required to have outstanding academic records and, in most cases, documentation of clinical expertise and leadership. Factors considered in admission to this degree are:

  • Previous background, including work experience (preferred) and licensure and/or certification to practice (as appropriate) in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, rehabilitation counseling, prosthetics and orthotics, medicine, nursing, engineering, or other field related to rehabilitation science. Applicants with bachelor's, master's, and clinical doctoral degrees will be considered.
  • Undergraduate and/or graduate minimum GPA of 3.0 in their field of study.
  • Letters of reference from both academic and clinical settings (as appropriate).
  • Evidence of certification and licensure to practice (if applicable)

Selection process

The PhD Administrative Core Faculty reviews all applications to the PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science and considers potential mentors for the applicants. Selection decisions weigh the strength of an application and the availability of an appropriate program mentor.

Applications received by the application deadline are given first consideration.  If there is space available in the program after this initial round, applications received after the deadline may be considered.

Program Costs

Resident and non-resident tuition for the PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science are based on Tier I  Graduate Tuition & Fees  for the Seattle campus, available from the University of Washington Office of Planning & Budgeting. 

In addition to living expenses, other expenses associated with doctoral study may include books, computer hardware and software, transportation, costs related to conducting dissertation research, and dissertation preparation.

Although we cannot guarantee financial assistance in the form of graduate student appointments to all students, we make every effort to find financial support within the Department’s ongoing teaching and research activities, training grants, and other funding opportunities.  We will also facilitate funding support and graduate student appointments through other campus departments when available and appropriate.   • Kartin Fund:  This fund was named in honor of Deborah Kartin, PT, PhD.  Dr. Kartin, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, was the inaugural Director of the University of Washington PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science.
  • Wang/Robinson Fund:   The Wang/Robinson endowed fund was initiated by Leilei Wang, PhD, MD, and Lawrence R. Robinson, MD. Dr. Wang, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, and Dr. Robinson, Professor, and the Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine when the PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science was established, all co-founded this endowed fund to support students in the PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science.
  • Anderson Fund:   The Anderson endowed fund was established by Marjorie E. Anderson, PhD, Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Washington.  Dr. Anderson served as Director of Rehabilitation Research, Vice-Chair of the Department, and twice as interim Chair, and endowed this fund to support students in the PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science.

The NYU Steinhardt Doctor of Philosophy, Research in Physical Therapy prepares physical therapists who have attained clinical doctorate (DPT) or master’s (MA, MS) degrees for rigorous, independent research careers that advance science and practice. Statement of Purpose

You are required to upload a typed, double-spaced, two- to three-page statement explaining your purpose in undertaking graduate study in this particular program as part of your application. This is your opportunity to introduce yourself and to inform the admissions committee about your goals, interests, and career plans as they relate to your intended academic pursuits.

Letters of Recommendation

Submit  three  letters of recommendation. Be sure to request them well in advance of the deadline. Read  detailed instructions .

Transcripts

Upload one official copy of transcripts from every postsecondary school you have attended or are attending. Make sure to request them in advance of the deadline.

If you completed or are completing a degree at an institution outside of the US or Canada, you are required to provide a WES or ECE evaluation. Please review our requirements for translation and a course-by-course evaluation of your transcripts.

Although the GRE is typically required for this program, for the 2024 admissions cycle GRE scores will not be required. For more information see  testing requirements .

After you fill in and upload the required information, you can submit your completed application.  Your application must be completed, dated, electronically signed, and submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST of the stated deadline.

Application Fee

You will be prompted to pay a $75 application fee, payable by major credit card only. After submitting your payment, you will see your application status change from “saved” to “submitted.” Please print this screen for your records, as it confirms that your application has been successfully sent to our school. If you have problems submitting your payment, please contact the Office of Graduate Admissions. Mailing Additional Items

If any application materials need to be mailed to our office, mail the materials to NYU Steinhardt, Office of Graduate Admissions, 82 Washington Square East, 3rd Floor New York, NY 10003-6680.  Please do not mail your materials in binders or folders. Any mailed materials must be  received by, not postmarked by, the stated deadline . Only completed applications will be considered and reviewed by the Admissions Committee. Due to high volume, we are unable to confirm receipt of mailed materials.

Application Policies

Application deadlines are "in-office" deadlines, not postmark deadlines.  It is your responsibility to ensure that all materials are in the Office of Graduate Admissions by the appropriate deadline, and we reserve the right to return any application that arrives after the deadline. Only completed applications will be considered. Should a deadline fall on a weekend, the in-office deadline will be the next business day. We advise you to apply early.

Please check the online system to confirm that you have successfully submitted your application.  Due to the volume of applications and related materials received, the Office of Graduate Admissions will only contact you if your application was successfully submitted and is deemed incomplete because of missing required materials. Otherwise, you will hear from us when the admissions committee has made its decision.

Deferral policy:  NYU Steinhardt does not allow deferrals. Applicants who wish to be considered for a future semester must reapply by submitting a new application with all supporting materials, including letters of recommendation, by the application deadline.

3. Receive Your Admission Decision

You will be notified about your decision by email. Typically, decisions will start going out in late March or early April for fall enrollment. You may learn of your decision before or after this timeline.

A PhD in Physiotherapy allows you to extend your body of knowledge about physiotherapy as you become a successful independent research within this field of study.

Our research is carried out in collaboration with clinical partners, global research centres and healthcare organisations. We have a dedicated Centre for Evidence Based Healthcare that works with our research groups and healthcare partners to provide methodological input, evidence synthesis and training.

A PhD in Physiotherapy allows you to extend your body of knowledge about an area of physiotherapy and rehabilitation sciences as you become a successful independent researcher within this field of study.

We welcome all applications that align with the research interests of our staff and research groups.

All modules are optional and bespoke to you. Modules will be chosen based on your discussions with academics.

Entry requirements

All candidates are considered on an individual basis and we accept a broad range of qualifications. The entrance requirements below apply to 2024 entry.

Meeting our English language requirements

If you need support to meet the required level, you may be able to attend a presessional English course. Presessional courses teach you academic skills in addition to English language. Our  Centre for English Language Education is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK.

If you successfully complete your presessional course to the required level, you can then progress to your degree course. This means that you won't need to retake IELTS or equivalent.

For on-campus presessional English courses, you must take IELTS for UKVI to meet visa regulations. For online presessional courses, see our CELE webpages for guidance.

Visa restrictions

International students must have valid UK immigration permissions for any courses or study period where teaching takes place in the UK. Student route visas can be issued for eligible students studying full-time courses. The University of Nottingham does not sponsor a student visa for students studying part-time courses. The Standard Visitor visa route is not appropriate in all cases. Please contact the university’s Visa and Immigration team if you need advice about your visa options.

Additional information for international students

If you are a student from the EU, EEA or Switzerland, you may be asked to complete a fee status questionnaire and your answers will be assessed using guidance issued by the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) .

These fees are for full-time study. If you are studying part-time, you will be charged a proportion of this fee each year (subject to inflation).

Additional costs

All students will need at least one device to approve security access requests via Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). We also recommend students have a suitable laptop to work both on and off-campus. For more information, please check the equipment advice .

As a student on this course, you should factor some additional costs into your personal budget, including any running costs for your project such as printing or equipment, alongside your tuition fees and living expenses. You should be able to access most of the books you’ll need through our libraries, though you may wish to purchase your own copies or more specific titles.

The school contributes to some costs relating to conference/course attendance and some research consumables. The full cost of your course will vary depending on the nature of your research project, for example there may be additional costs for projects which require specific equipment or travel and you’ll need to have sourced funds for this.

Our Medical School is based in Queen’s Medical Centre, one of the UK’s largest hospitals.

There are dedicated clinical skills facilities including a dissection suite and teaching laboratories for medicine and healthcare students.

PhD in Neuroscience - Movement and Rehabilitation Science Program

The PhD in Neuroscience with specialization in Movement and Rehabilitation Science (NUIN-MRS) program combines a solid training in fundamental neurobiology with training in basic quantitative methods to help development the scientific knowledge base required for the construction of more effective rehabilitation interventions. Students in the NUIN-MRS program receive a broad education, from cellular/molecular to systems neuroscience, and are expected to approach the study of movement disorders in a rigorous and fundamental way, whether the work is focused on basic, translational or clinical research.

We encourage students to apply if they are interested in pursuing a career in Movement and Rehabilitation Science research with an emphasis on quantitative methods and techniques. We welcome applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds, including physical therapy, occupational therapy and other health professions, exercise science, biomechanics, engineering and the basic sciences. Prior research experience is highly valued in the admissions process.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Dissertation Grant Program (R36): This award will fund 9-17 months of the dissertation phase of PhD training for research that focuses on topical areas unique to AHRQ, demonstrating how expected results can be used or made available for use to enhance patient safety and quality of care. Results should be directly relevant to customers, such as providers and practitioners, administrators, payers, consumers, policymakers, and insurers. The strategic research goals are:

Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I & II Scholarships : Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I & II Scholarships, part of the Foundation's Doctoral Opportunities for Clinicians and Scholars (DOCS) program, are to fund doctoral students, who having completed one full year of coursework , wish to continue their studies or have entered the dissertation phase of their doctoral program.

Two scholarship categories within the PODS program have been established for the two distinct phases of education and training:

PODS I  - Up to $7,500 per year in support of the coursework phase of post-professional doctoral studies prior to candidacy (as defined by the applicant's institution).

PODS II  - Up to $15,000 in support of the post-candidacy phase of post-professional doctoral studies (as defined by the applicant's institution).

AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION

Pre-doctoral Fellowship:  Helps students initiate careers in cardiovascular or stroke research by providing research assistance and training. Please see the  AHA webpage  for further information.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN

Dissertation Fellowships are available to women who will complete their dissertations within a specified period of time. To qualify, applicants must have completed all course work, passed all required preliminary examinations, and received approval for their research proposal or plan by a pre-set deadline. Students holding any fellowship for writing a dissertation in the year prior to the AAUW Educational Foundation fellowship year are not eligible. Open to applicants in all fields of study, except engineering. Scholars engaged in researching gender issues are encouraged to apply.

UCF Grads Shape Emergency Responses Nationwide

UCF has a proven track record in emergency management. The university’s Master of Emergency and Crisis Management program — which is offered the College of Community Innovation and Education — has climbed the rankings over seven consecutive years. The homeland security program and its faculty researchers enable students to navigate increasingly complex manmade and natural disasters, while learning from past disasters to improve their preparedness and response in the future.

Graduates of the program go on to become leaders in directing and implementing emergency responses in Florida and throughout the country, including in Boston and Washington, D.C. UCF students who have graduated from the nonprofit management program have gone on to make a big impact by helping communities in Florida and beyond. In one example, more than 12 years ago, program graduate Eric Camarillo ’16 ’19MNM launched faith-based nonprofit organization SALT Outreach Inc. in Central Florida to help provide services to the homeless, including mobile shower trailers, laundry, clothing, haircuts, mail services and help with employment. SALT has grown to more than 30 staff members who help hundreds of people every day.

The Best Graduate Education Schools category includes graduate-level educator preparation and advancement programs, such as teacher education, school counseling and psychology, educational leadership, and curriculum and instruction, all offered through the College of Community Innovation and Education. Us news & world report ranks iowa audiology, speech-language pathology among the top in the nation.

Two UIowa programs in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) are once again recognized among the best in their field according to the U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings for 2024 .  

Iowa’s audiology program is again ranked second best in the nation and remains the top public institution training audiologists. The speech-language pathology program climbed in the rankings to fifth and is now the third-ranked public institution. CSD is housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.   

New rankings of nation-wide  Audiology and  Speech-Language Pathology graduate programs is available on the USNWR website.

“We are focused on training outstanding audiologists and speech-language pathologists,” said Eric Hunter , DEO and Harriet B. and Harold S. Brady Chair in Liberal Arts and Sciences. “These rankings recognize the daily efforts of our remarkable faculty and staff, who consistently strive to provide exceptional education to our students.”  

“Together, we are shaping the future of audiology and speech-language pathology, and we will continue to lead the way in delivering excellence,” Hunter added.  

Hunter, who has been at Iowa since August 2023 and is a nationally recognized expert in the field, was the first hire under the University of Iowa’s Transformational Faculty Hiring Program, which is aimed at attracting world-class faculty to strategic programs and areas of excellence. He received a PhD from Iowa’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders program in 2001.  

Iowa has long been a leader in communication sciences and disorders dating back to 1897, when the university, led by Carl Seashore’s pioneering work, developed speech pathology as a discipline of study.  

“CLAS is proud of our faculty and staff who continue to guide this storied program into the future,” said Dean Sara Sanders. “Because of their tremendous talent and dedication to their research and teaching, CSD continues to be at the forefront of audiology and speech-language pathology.”   

The university, college, and department continue to lead, ensuring students access to unparalleled opportunities. Construction has started on a new $249 million building that will provide a state-of-the-art learning space for Iowa students studying in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Department of Health and Human Physiology, and the Carver College of Medicine’s Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.  

Substantial completion of the building is anticipated in 2025.

Biden Announces New Plan for Student Debt Relief

President biden announced a large-scale effort to help pay off federal student loans for more than 20 million borrowers..

Today, I’m proud to announce five major actions to continue to relieve student debt for more than 30 million Americans since I started my administration. And starting this fall, we plan to deliver up to $20,000 in interest relief to over 20 million borrowers and full forgiveness for millions more. [applause] I will never stop to deliver student debt relief and hardworking Americans. And it’s only in the interest of America that we do it. And again, it’s for the good of our economy that’s growing stronger and stronger, and it is, by freeing millions of Americans from this crushing debt of student debt. It means they can finally get on with their lives instead of being put — their lives being put on hold.

President Biden released details on Monday of his new student loan debt forgiveness plan for nearly 30 million borrowers.

The proposal still needs to be finalized and will have to withstand expected legal challenges, like the ones that doomed Mr. Biden’s first attempt to wipe out student debt on a large scale last year.

Biden administration officials said they could begin handing out some of the debt relief — including the canceling of up to $20,000 in interest — as soon as this fall if the new effort moves forward after the required, monthslong comment period.

Here’s what is known so far about the program:

Who would benefit from the new plan?

The plan would reduce payments for 25 million borrowers and erase all debt for more than four million Americans. Altogether, 10 million borrowers would see debt relief of $5,000 or more, officials said.

The groups affected include:

— Borrowers whose loan balances have ballooned because of interest would have up to $20,000 of their interest balance canceled. The plan would waive the entire interest balance for borrowers considered “low- and middle-income” who are enrolled in the administration’s income-driven repayment plans.

The interest forgiveness would be a one-time benefit, but would be the largest relief valve in the plan. The administration estimates that of the 25 million borrowers that could see relief under this waiver, 23 million would see their entire interest balance wiped out.

— Borrowers who are eligible for, but have not yet applied for, loan forgiveness under existing programs like Public Service Loan Forgiveness or the administration’s new repayment program, called SAVE, would have their debts automatically canceled.

— Borrowers with undergraduate student debt who started repaying their loans more than 20 years ago, and graduate students who started paying their debt 25 or more years ago, would have their debts canceled.

— Borrowers who enrolled in programs or colleges that lost federal funding because they cheated or defrauded students would have their debts waived. Students who attended institutions or programs that left them with mounds of debt but bleak earning or job prospects would also be eligible for relief.

— Borrowers who are experiencing “hardship” paying back their loans because of medical or child care costs would also be eligible for some type of relief. The administration has not yet determined how these borrowers would be identified, but is considering automatic forgiveness for those at risk of defaulting.

How is this different from the last plan?

Mr. Biden initially tried to grant $400 billion in debt relief for 40 million borrowers by using the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act of 2003, or HEROES Act, which the administration argued allowed the government to waive student debt during a national emergency like the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Supreme Court blocked that move , saying that Mr. Biden had exceeded his authority.

The new plan would forgive some or all loan debt for nearly 30 million borrowers under the Higher Education Act, the federal law that regulates student loan and grant programs. By targeting specific groups of borrowers — instead of offering broad loan forgiveness — the administration believes it can act within the narrower confines of that law.

The Biden administration said lawyers for the White House and the Education Department studied last year’s Supreme Court ruling and designed the new program to make sure it did not violate the principles laid out by the justices.

Still, there could be questions about whether the borrowers under the latest plan would be considered “limited,” as the Supreme Court said the Higher Education Act requires, or whether the administration again overstepped its authority.

What’s the timeline?

The new plan still needs to be published in the Federal Register, which then will start a monthslong public comment period. Administration officials have said they hoped some of the provisions would begin going into effect in “early fall.”

That could leave the debt relief plan unresolved as voters go to the polls in November to choose between Mr. Biden and former President Donald J. Trump.

But Biden campaign officials hope the latest effort will help rally voters who were sorely disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision last year.
