12 Best Chegg Alternatives 2024

As a student, you’ve probably heard of Chegg. It’s famous for helping many students find answers to questions, get homework assistance, and prepare for tests .

In addition to being able to browse previously asked questions, Chegg users can ask questions or even take a picture of a problem and upload it to the site for an expert to answer. Chegg also provides other resources to students, such as flashcards, a plagiarism checker , and cheap textbooks for rent.

There are several platforms like Chegg, namely Quizlet , Answers.com , and 24 Hour Answers . However the best Chegg alternative is Course Hero . Not only do you get plenty of study material and courses but Course Hero also offers expert assistance to your questions and assignments.

The need to explore Chegg alternatives

1. course hero, 3. stack exchange, 4. answers.com, 5. paul’s online math notes, 6. 24 hour answers, 7. bartleby, 8. r/domyhomeworkpaid (2.0), 9. tutor.com, 11. school solver, 12. studydaddy, wrapping it up: what is the best chegg alternative.

Chegg isn’t entirely free — you need a subscription to ask questions, and each subscription package only includes a certain amount of questions. After that, you’ll need to pay extra for additional questions.

Chegg Study costs $14.95/month (click here for updated pricing). That’s just out of the reach of many students who don’t have a source of income and are on a budget, especially since it doesn’t even let you ask unlimited questions.

In addition, many students are afraid to use Chegg because their professors frown upon it, thinking that it’s just a website for people who want to cheat.

In fact, professors have gotten pretty good at figuring out which students have used Chegg to cheat. Many professors have “secret” accounts on Chegg that they use to monitor questions similar to the ones they ask on their tests; they then see which students copied answers from Chegg.

It gets even better (or worse, depending on how you look at it). Professors can email Chegg about suspected cheating and violations of Chegg’s Code of Honor to find out if students have been using Chegg.

According to this Reddit thread on the r/professors subreddit, professors can conduct a “Code of Honor violation investigation.” They can receive information such as the username and email address of the student who uploaded a question, when the question was asked, the institution the student attends, and more.

Because some students use Chegg to cheat, many professors have banned their students from using Chegg entirely.

That’s why many students have been searching for alternatives that are not as well known, or not as pricey. Some of those alternatives are entirely free, so you won’t have to pay a monthly plan to ask questions and receive answers.

Finally, some great alternatives to Chegg that existed in the past were bought off by Chegg. For example, StudyBlue and Cramster were both acquired by Chegg.

If you don’t like Chegg’s attempt to monopolize the homework help industry, there are still other alternatives out there, as mentioned above.

Let’s find out more about them, but remember, regardless of why you’re looking for a Chegg alternative, you should never use them for cheating and only to aid in your studies.

Let’s get into it.

The best alternative to Chegg is Course Hero. It boasts over 60 million study materials.

Not only can you browse textbook problems and step-by-step solutions, but you can also ask a question yourself and get an answer in as little as 15 minutes.

It’s cheaper than Chegg — prices start at just $9.95 per month. While there is a free plan, you will have to pay per question, while a subscription gives you a certain amount of questions included per month.

Check this page for updated pricing.

Finding study materials is really easy. You can search by subject or school to find study materials most appropriate for the course you are taking.

You can also browse textbooks online — there are hundreds of textbooks in many subjects, such as biology, chemistry , and accounting. Likewise, you can find textbooks by title, author, or ISBN.

Course Hero is constantly adding new textbooks.

In addition to the textbooks, you can learn with expert-verified textbook solutions and explanations. You can also complete Course Hero exercises with hints and videos to practice your skills and learn new things .

Like Chegg, Course Hero allows you to ask questions and receive expert answers. However, you don’t need to pay to do it!

While premium plans will give you a set number of questions per month, you can also gain access to free questions by simply uploading study documents for others to enjoy or by referring friends.

Course Hero is extremely useful for test prep as well. You can browse exams and standardized tests on all levels, from high school tests to graduate school exams.

These tests allow you to practice for your upcoming exam, locate the areas you need to work on, and get a more rounded test prep.

Finally, Course Hero has a fantastic scholarship program that provides eligible students with a $5,000/year scholarship.

Quizlet is another awesome Chegg alternative for study aid, homework help, and reviewing your school coursework. It’s free to use, although there is a Quizlet Plus plan (more on that later).

Using Quizlet, you can:

  • Access a wide selection of free textbooks online
  • Browse questions on any topic and see expert explanations
  • Use flashcards to help guide your studies

You can organize your flashcards and notes into “study sets,” and you can take snapshots of your notes with your camera to add them to your sets. If you’d like to see recommended study materials, simply enter your school and course information, and Quizlet will show you the materials that are best for you.

With Quizlet Plus, you can generate custom study paths, create complex diagrams , learn step-by-step solutions, and a lot more. Quizlet Plus also lets you study offline using the mobile app.

Quizlet might be better than Chegg, since its free plan gives you access to most of the site, unlike Chegg. It’s best if you don’t need direct answers to your questions but just a place to browse or create flashcards for spaced repetition learning.

homework help like chegg

Stack Exchange is an excellent Chegg alternative if you’re looking for Q&A help. It’s one of the best places to go for answers on any topic, as there are over 170 sites and subdomains in the Stack Exchange network, each one dedicated to questions on a different topic.

There are a lot more topics than on Chegg, including simple topics like travel and advanced engineering topics.

For example, for answers to mathematical questions , you can go to math.stackexchange.com . You can either browse questions asked by others or ask your own question.

Unlike Chegg, you don’t need to pay any money to ask questions on Stack Exchange. However, do keep in mind that anyone can answer a question on Stack Exchange; you don’t need to be an expert to answer a question, and none of the questions are peer-reviewed.

In other words, take the answers with a grain of salt. Continue to do your own research and do not rely on them 100 percent.

However, people do get badges for providing answers that others find helpful. There are bronze, silver, and gold badges available; the more badges an expert has, the more likely their answer is to be correct and true.

For example, one particular badge is earned when an answer is bookmarked by 25 users. People also get badges and reputation points when users upvote their answers to questions.

Don’t confuse Stack Exchange with Stack Overflow. They are both parts of the same network, but Stack Overflow is a separate domain focused on programming Q&A.

Answers.com, or simply Answers, is a great alternative to Chegg. While it has a free plan that will be sufficient for many students, it has a premium plan, Answers+, which is a fraction of the price of Chegg Study.

There are a few plans available, starting at just $1.99/month (paid annually). Even if you pay monthly, pricing starts at just $9.99/month, and there are often flash sales where you can get any plan at 50 percent off.

homework help like chegg

Not only that, but with Answers+, you can ask unlimited questions! Answers.com promises to “run out of answers before you run out of questions.”

Chegg doesn’t let you ask unlimited questions on any plan, so you can save a lot of money by switching to Answers.com.

The downside of Answers.com is that anyone who is registered can answer questions. You earn points for answering questions, which incentivizes people to do so.

While that ensures you will get an answer quickly, it also means that you can’t take each answer at face value. Instead, continue doing your own research.

Before asking your own question, browse existing questions to see if someone asked it already.

Answers.com also has a pretty cool Math Solver tool . It is more than just a calculator; it breaks down each math solution for you and shows you how to solve it, step by step.

That way, you actually get to understand how to solve the problem instead of just memorizing the answer.

You may also find the Answers.com study guides helpful. The study guides group together common questions and answers on certain topics, so you can quickly patch up gaps in your knowledge.

Finally, download the mobile app if you would like to browse and ask questions while on the go.

If you need help with studying university-level math, Paul’s Online Math Notes will come in handy. While you can’t really ask questions on the site, the notes are designed to answer common questions that Paul’s students have.

Paul Dawkins, the site’s creator, is a math professor at Lamar University. However, he made the notes for students of all universities , not just for those learning in his classes.

Unlike Chegg, the site is entirely free to browse — you don’t even need to create an account to use it! It’s Paul’s personal project, and he wanted to make his notes and explanations available to all, free of charge.

Also, it focuses entirely on math, so you won’t get distracted with other topics like you might on Chegg.

In addition to notes, you can make use of the cheat sheets, assignment problems, and practice problems.

24 Hour Answers is one of the older Chegg alternatives. It’s been around since 2005. A chemistry professor founded it, so students can get micro tutoring on any subject, quickly and without paying exorbitant tutoring fees.

24 Hour Answers is not free, but you don’t have to pay a monthly subscription like you would have to if you used Chegg. Instead, after uploading your question, you will get a custom quote from a tutor.

That quote will be based on what the answering tutor deems appropriate for the question. Some questions are easier to answer than others and require less time.

Besides asking questions yourself, you can browse almost 25,000 answered questions that were asked by other students. To reveal an answer, you will have to pay a one-time fee; each answer will have a different price.

You can also find tutoring from experts at a set rate per hour. Tutoring isn’t always cheap, but these are real experts with advanced degrees, and you can find them quickly without committing to studying with the same tutor for months.

Bartleby is a homework help website that offers four main products:

  • Bartleby Learn
  • Bartleby Write
  • Bartleby Tutor

Bartleby Learn is very similar to Chegg, but it costs just $9.99/month, making it more affordable than Chegg Study. In addition, if you aren’t sure you want to commit to a full month, you can get your first week for just $4.99.

While it doesn’t include a proofreading tool like Chegg Study does, it’s an option to consider if you only need Q&A help.

With Bartleby Learn, you can ask up to 30 questions a month and browse the existing library of questions and answers. There are over five million textbook solutions and explanations in the Bartleby library.

However, you don’t need to sign up for Bartleby Learn to browse textbook answers. There is a nice selection of free answers as well.

Bartleby Write is for those who need help with their essays. It also costs $9.99/month, but you won’t actually get real humans writing your essays for you.

It’s just an online tool that uses AI to proofread and perfect your writing , check for plagiarism , and build citations.

Bartleby+ includes both Bartleby Learn and Bartleby Write, and it costs $14.99/month.

Finally, Bartleby Tutor lets you connect with tutors online and get one on one help . You don’t need to commit to lengthy contracts, and you even get a free 15-minute session when you first sign up.

On Chegg, you can get answers to questions, but you can’t get anyone to actually do your homework for you. The DoMyHomeworkPaid subreddit is a place where you can find and pay tutors to complete your homework assignments, essays, and more .

Here’s how it works: Browse the recent threads to find tutors who are offering their services.

Some will be physics experts, while others will be offering writing assistance. They’ll be giving you their contact information, so you can get in touch with them.

There is a list of banned scammers who have been reported by students.

Make sure to visit the 2.0 version of the subreddit (as linked above), as the original subreddit was restricted, and you can no longer post there.

Tutor.com is a first-class micro tutoring alternative to Chegg. It’s offered by The Princeton Review, a test prep company that offers tutoring, courses, books, and admissions resources.

However, Tutor.com isn’t just for test prep — it’s for students of all levels who need help with any subject.

The tutors at Tutor.com are the real deal. They are professors, Ivy League graduates, PhDs, and experts on a wide range of topics.

Finding a tutor is easy. Just select your subject and browse tutor profiles .

You’ll be able to read each tutor’s bio, see their education and degrees, and check the review rating they got from previous students. Then, you can send them a message with the topic you need help with and set up a session.

As a parent, you can use Tutor.com to find a professional mentor for your elementary school student.

After your first session with your tutor, you can request additional sessions — just bookmark a tutor if you like them. Alternatively, you can replay your tutoring session or read a transcript — that’s a great way to solidify your understanding of what your tutor taught you.

Tutor.com works 24/7, so it doesn’t matter what time zone you are in. However, there are four days a year on which the website is closed: New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

I’d say that if you’d like expert one-on-one tutoring from a professional mentor online, Tutor.com is superior to Chegg. It works on a pay-as-you-go model, and you can browse tutors’ profiles before even signing up.

Quora is a superb alternative to Chegg simply because it’s free. You can ask as many questions as you want on any topic, including controversial topics, and receive expert answers.

However, I didn’t put Quora earlier on in this list because some answers are not accurate. You have to check the profile of the person who is answering your question to see what their background is and whether they are qualified to answer your question.

Since anyone on the internet can answer questions on Quora, do not take any answer at face value, especially if the answerer does not have a filled-out profile.

Also, be wary of those who provide answers simply to drive traffic to their blogs; often, they will copy and paste their blog posts and use them as answers.

On the flip side, you will often get multiple answers, from multiple people, on a single question. By comparing different answers, you can figure out which ones are accurate, and it also allows you to learn about different viewpoints and perspectives.

Finally, you can browse existing questions on Quora to see if your question has been answered already.

One other advantage to using Quora is that it supports multiple languages. So, if English is not your native tongue, simply choose the language you are most comfortable with, so experts can answer you in that language.

As you may have noticed, many Chegg alternatives have one of two disadvantages.

The free ones are great if you are on a budget, but you can’t always tell if the person answering the question is a true expert and knows what they are talking about. On the other hand, the sites with true experts usually cost more than what many students can afford.

School Solver supplies some middle ground. All the people answering the questions are experts, but they’re not the ones giving you quotes for their time.

Instead, you decide how much you are willing to pay when you post the question. An expert can then decide if it’s worth their time or not.

If it isn’t, they can simply move on to a question with a higher price tag. However, sooner or later, you are likely to get an expert who is willing to answer your question.

On School Solver, you’ll find students willing to pay $100 for an answer, others willing to pay $15, and others willing to pay just $1 or even $0.50. It’s truly up to you, but paying a few more dollars can help speed up the length of time it takes to get an answer.

Unlike Chegg, you don’t need to sign up for a monthly subscription. If you only have one question a month, it’s fabulous — you just pay per question.

homework help like chegg

The final Chegg alternative on this list is StudyDaddy. Unlike Chegg, there are no monthly commitments; instead, you pay per question.

Simply post a question on one of over 40 subjects. Tutors will be able to submit proposals and quotes, based on the prices they think are appropriate.

Browse the proposals and pick a tutor. Then, pay and wait for the tutor to answer the question.

The tutor will not get their money until the question has been answered. You are also free to ask for revisions if needed.

The #1 Chegg alternative is Course Hero. It is the most similar to Chegg in terms of the wide range of resources it supplies, from textbook solutions to real-time Q&A expert help.

Not only that, but by uploading study documents and referring friends, you can unlock free Q&As and get expert help without paying a thing.

Listen: we know homework isn’t fun, but it is a good way to reinforce the ideas and concepts you’ve learned in class. But what if you’re really struggling with your homework assignments?

If you’ve looked online for a little extra help with your take-home assignments, you’ve probably stumbled across websites claiming to provide the homework help and answers students need to succeed . But can homework help sites really make a difference? And if so, which are the best homework help websites you can use?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help websites–free and paid. We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help websites
  • The cost of homework help websites
  • The five best homework websites out there
  • The pros and cons of using these websites for homework help
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using online homework help
  • Tips for getting the most out of a homework help website

So let’s get started!

The Basics About Homework Help Websites–Free and Paid

Homework help websites are designed to help you complete your homework assignments, plain and simple.

What Makes a Homework Help Site Worth Using

Most of the best sites allow users to ask questions and then provide an answer (or multiple possible answers) and explanation in seconds. In some instances, you can even send a photo of a particular assignment or problem instead of typing the whole thing out!

Homework help sites also offer more than just help answering homework questions. Common services provided are Q&A with experts, educational videos, lectures, practice tests and quizzes, learning modules, math solving tools, and proofreading help. Homework help sites can also provide textbook solutions (i.e. answers to problems in tons of different textbooks your school might be using), one-on-one tutoring, and peer-to-peer platforms that allow you to discuss subjects you’re learning about with your fellow students.

And best of all, nearly all of them offer their services 24/7, including tutoring!

What You Should Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of scam sites out there willing to prey on desperate students. Before you sign up for any service, make sure you read reviews to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

A word to the wise: the more a company advertises help that veers into the territory of cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. The best homework help websites are going to help you learn the concepts you’ll need to successfully complete your homework on your own. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” a little later!)

body-gold-piggy-bank-money

You don't need a golden piggy bank to use homework help websites. Some provide low or no cost help for students like you!

How Expensive Are the Best Homework Help Websites?

First of all, just because a homework help site costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. Likewise, just because a homework help website is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best websites, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

The 5 Best Homework Help Websites

So, what is the best homework help website you can use? The answer is that it depends on what you need help with.

The best homework help websites are the ones that are reliable and help you learn the material. They don’t just provide answers to homework questions–they actually help you learn the material.

That’s why we’ve broken down our favorite websites into categories based on who they’re best for . For instance, the best website for people struggling with math might not work for someone who needs a little extra help with science, and vice versa.

Keep reading to find the best homework help website for you!

Best Free Homework Help Site: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads.

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

  • Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school.

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects.

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers.

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

  • Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want
  • Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help.

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter!

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!

body-studtypool-logo

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

  • Best for: Science homework help
  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites

First, let’s take a look at the benefits.

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts.

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option.

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service!

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get.

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating.

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Tip 4: Set a Budget

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Tip 5: Read the Reviews

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

Why Do You Need a Chegg Alternative?

There are a few scenarios in which you would be better off with a Chegg alternative. In the end, it’s up to you to decide whether or not to choose an alternative to Chegg based on your own requirements and preferences.

  • Price: With various services needed, the cost of Chegg can add up quickly. Some advantages of competitors include lower costs or more adaptable payment schedules.
  • Limited availability: It is possible that Chegg’s services will not be made available outside of the United States. Such substitutes may reach a wider audience or provide material that is better appropriate to the target region.
  • Quality: Chegg provides a plethora of study tools and services, however, the quality of those tools and services may vary. Other options may offer more expertly curated content or higher-grade resources for a given topic.

Pros and Cons of TakeLessons

How much does takelessons cost.

TakeLessons offers a variety of pricing plans to accommodate different budgets, including both one-time lessons and ongoing lesson packages.

The price for in-person tutoring is not fixed as it depends on factors, like the number of subjects, location, and experience level of the tutor. TakeLessons also allow students to pay in installments for ongoing lessons packages. The installment plan options vary depending on the length of the package but typically involve three to six monthly payments. Some additional fees or interest is charged for using the installment plan option, which will be communicated with the students when they take the package.

Preply vs TakeLessons

Preply and TakeLessons are two online platforms that cater to different educational needs.

Preply is a global online tutoring platform that connects students with tutors for one-on-one lessons in over 50 languages and subjects. It provides customization options, a 100% satisfaction guarantee, and flexible pricing plans. Tutors on TakeLessons set their own prices, with the starting range of the sessions being from $10 per hour to $80 per hour.

In summary, while Preply focuses on language learning and allows students to choose their tutors, TakeLessons offers a wide variety of subjects and provides a flexible and customizable learning experience.

TakeLessons offers a  convenient and flexible platform  to connect with qualified instructors for a wide variety of subjects. *Pricing info retrieved from the Superprof website in November 2023.

Chegg vs Superprof

Chegg and Superprof are two online platforms that cater to students’ academic needs, but they offer different services.

Chegg is primarily a homework help service. It provides students with solutions to their academic questions. Students can upload a photo or screenshot of their question, and a ‘Chegg Expert’ will provide an answer. Chegg also offers a Study pack subscription, which includes homework help, quiz and exam help, math help, plagiarism checker, and writing help1. Additionally, Chegg offers some cool learning tools like videos, Math Solver, writing help, and flashcards.

Superprof, on the other hand, is a global online tutoring platform that connects students with tutors for one-on-one lessons in over 50 languages and subjects. It allows students to browse through tutors’ profiles and choose whom they want to learn with. Tutors on Superprof set their own prices, with the average price range being $15 to $40 per hour.

In summary, while Chegg provides solutions to academic questions and a variety of learning tools, Superprof offers personalized tutoring services.

Superprof is a good option for students who are looking for a personalized learning experience and have flexibility in their schedule. However, it is  important to note that there is a monthly subscription fee and tutor fees can vary depending on the tutor’s qualifications and experience.

Factors to keep in mind when selecting a tutoring site like Chegg

When choosing an online learning platform, there are several factors that people usually consider to ensure they find the right fit for their needs. These factors include:

  • Subject Coverage: Learners should look for a platform that offers courses or tutors in the subjects they want to learn. Some platforms may specialize in certain subjects, while others may offer a wider range.
  • Teacher Qualifications: It’s essential to choose a platform that has qualified and experienced teachers or tutors who can provide high-quality instruction. Platforms may provide information about teacher credentials or offer user reviews to help learners assess the quality of their educators.
  • Scheduling Flexibility: Online learners often have busy schedules and require flexibility in when they can access courses or tutoring. Platforms that offer flexible scheduling options such as 24/7 availability or self-paced learning may be attractive to learners.
  • Payment Options: Some platforms offer different payment options, such as subscription-based models, pay-per-session, or bundled packages. Learners should consider which payment option is most convenient for them and aligns with their budget.
  • Customer Support: Learners may require technical support, course or tutoring support, or assistance with billing or account management. Platforms that offer reliable and accessible customer support can provide learners with peace of mind and ensure that learners can get help when they need it.

It’s also important to consider that different learners have different needs and preferences, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for online learning platforms.

Therefore, learners should consider their unique requirements when choosing the right platform that best suits their goals and preferences.

Bonus section: Free alternatives to Chegg

Chegg is a well-known platform for homework help and academic resources. However, there are several alternatives available that cater to different educational needs.

  • Wiingy is an online tutoring platform that offers one-on-one online tutoring in a variety of subjects, including math, reading, writing, and test prep. It is a good option for students who are looking for a quality and affordable online tutoring service.

  • Pearson’s Smarthinking  provides a detailed, personalized critique of any written assignment.
  • TakeLessons  offers a wide variety of subjects and provides a flexible and customizable learning experience.
  • Superprof  is a global online tutoring platform that connects students with tutors for one-on-one lessons in over 50 languages and subjects.

Each of these platforms has its own unique features and strengths. The choice between them depends on the specific needs and preferences of the student. Whether you’re looking for homework help, one-on-one tutoring, writing review, or a platform to compare various tutoring services, there’s likely an alternative to Chegg that fits your needs.

15 Companies and Websites Like Chegg (Get Paid For Homework Help)

Looking for the best Chegg alternatives? Below you’ll find a collection of useful sites like Chegg to earn money as an online tutor providing homework help.

Of websites that offer homework help, Chegg might well be the most popular one. It has abundant work, offers great rates, and provides its tutors with flexible opportunities.

Getting started is easy too. As long as you are ready to verify your identity and provide qualification documents, you are only an interview-style exam away from becoming a tutor.

Unfortunately, passing the exam is not guaranteed. And even if you pass, the competition for work is often too high. You may not hit the ground running.

This article is for you if you are looking for websites like Chegg that pay tutors to provide homework assistance.

Read on for the top 15 Chegg alternatives.

The best websites like Chegg

1. course hero.

Course Hero is a learning platform with a vast library of crowdsourced resources that benefits millions of students worldwide. Like Chegg, Course Hero hires English-speaking freelance tutors to answer questions for around $3 a question.

No certification or proof of experience is required to join Course Hero. The platform gives you the benefit of the doubt and only locks you out if you do not pass the initial aptitude test.

As a Course Hero tutor, you can expect to make between $12 and $20 per hour, or up to $1,500 per month. Payments are made through PayPal.

2. SweetStudy

Formerly known as HomeworkMarket, SweetStudy is one of the oldest platforms in academic writing. It pays freelancers to do homework, proofread homework, and answer individual questions.

SweetStudy has a market-standard pay rate of $5-$20, though contractors have to forego 20% of their earnings, which the platform cuts as commission. The remainder can be withdrawn via PayPal, Western Union, Payoneer, or Wise.

You can become a freelancer at SweetStudy without any qualifications or experience. It’s, however, more lucrative if you have a college degree, as some assignments are strictly assigned to verified tutors.

To find work, you will first need to create a profile, showcasing your skills and rates, after which SweetStudy will give you access to their job pool.

Note that, unlike many websites like Chegg, SweetStudy won’t take down assignments once someone starts doing them. Instead, they will remain accessible to all eligible freelancers until the student finds a satisfying answer.

3. Studypool

Studypool is a great place if you are a college student or graduate looking to get paid to help other students do their homework.

The registration process is a short but tough one. Candidates write a 200-word essay and then go through an interview, which tests their English proficiency.

You will be eligible to do assignments and answer live questions immediately after your registration is approved.

Since Studypool is a bidding site, your ability to get assignments partly depends on your bidding language, profile history, and chosen pay rate.

According to Studypool, its highest earners pocket up to $7,500 per month.

Reddit may not be the dedicated homework help site we asked for, but some of its 48 million users are students looking for help with their homework.

Many of these are individuals dodging the high service fees of companies like Chegg or seeking direct unfiltered interaction with their helpers.

The r/hwforcash subreddit has over 16k followers. You can view it even without a Reddit account, but you must be logged in to interact with anyone.

Reddit has no specific rules regarding homework help. There is also no protection whatsoever from potential scammers either.

However, if you are looking for long-term clients, Reddit is your best bet. Other sites like Chegg don’t encourage sharing of contacts between users.

5. PaperCoach

PaperCoach offers homework help to students of all education levels. So it doesn’t matter whether your specialty is writing high school, college, or PhD assignments. If you know your thing, the platform welcomes you to submit your application.

The registration process involves CV submission followed by qualification verification. You can start working immediately after your account is approved, which, in many cases, takes several days to a few weeks.

The job pool is not always brimming with assignments, especially when schools are closed, but work will always be available for the most experienced and qualified writers. So while putting your all into earning decent money, ensure your clients are happy too.

PaperCoach’s minimum pay rate is $8 per page.

More sites and companies like Chegg

6. helpwithassignment.

Not many companies like Chegg pay their writers $9.50 per page. HelpWithAssignment offers that as the minimum rate.

But that doesn’t come on a silver platter. To join, tutors must have at least two years of teaching experience or a Master’s or Ph.D. They also have to take and pass an entrance test.

Approved tutors provide services such as:

  • Assignment assistance
  • Live tutoring
  • Answering questions in the platform’s solution library

While you can make good money bidding for random tasks on the job pool, creating bonds with repeat clients is your best bet to make HelpWithAssignment a primary income source.

7. 24hoursanswers

For $45 per hour on average, 24hoursanswers gives tutors an opportunity to work with college students seeking homework help and live online tutoring.

You need a Master’s degree or, if you are a student, an exceptional performance record to join 24hoursanswers as a tutor.

The job pool is open to everyone who gets the initial approval. Work postings may not be as orderly as in Chegg, but the platform counterbalances that by letting homework helpers give an estimate of the time it will take to complete an assignment.

As a helper, you also get to negotiate the pay rate directly with the student.

24hoursanswers pays freelancers via Payoneer, PayPal, ACH payments, and bank transfers. Payments are sent out monthly.

8. Schoolsolver

Schoolsolver is different from many websites like Chegg in that tutors and homework helpers can be paid several times for the same answer if it’s bought more than once. The platform also insists that helpers show their work so students can learn in the process.

What I like most about Schoolsolver is fancy academic papers are not part of the registration prerequisites. You can sign up with or without a degree and offer help in as many subjects as you wish.

Before that, however, you will need to get at least 90% on quizzes for the specific subjects you want to handle.

You can make an average of $15 per hour on Schoolsolver. The site will cut a 20% commission per answer and an additional 2% when withdrawing your cumulative earnings to your PayPal account.

TutorMe is one of my favorite Chegg alternatives for providing multiple ways for freelancers to make money.

You can teach virtually anything on the site, from Mathematics and Physics to coding, animation, and music. All you need is information about your educational background and work experience, and you’re good to go!

A requirement you may want to remember – although it’s an unlikely entry barrier – is that all tutors must be at least 18 years old. They must also reside in the US or Canada and have a degree or be a college sophomore.

If your application is approved, you can make at least $16 per hour.

If the 21-subject catalog at TutorMe shocked you, here is a site that assists students in more than 300 subjects. On Wyzant , anything goes.

No formal education is required, and there is no need to prepare for an interview because there is none.

You must be really good in at least one subject, though. The marketplace is too crowded to accommodate mediocrity, let alone give you a second chance.

What’s more, the commission over there is a whopping 25%. That is, if you make $100 from a subject, Wyzant will cut $25 for being the go-between.

Wyzant considers its tutors independent contractors and therefore lets them decide their pay rate, teaching method, and lesson frequency.

According to the site, most tutors charge between $35 and $63, which is a pretty competitive range compared to what other sites like Chegg have to offer.

Other sites similar to Chegg

11. oneclass.

How do you like being paid in redeemable credits? That’s what OneClass has in store for you.

You could be forgiven for thinking that’s the sole weird thing about the platform. Apparently, the company doesn’t just pay you for doing other people’s homework. It also pays you for uploading notes.

Basically, it is a student-to-student platform, although nothing formal and strict is in place to ensure only students access the site.

OneClass is not as lucrative as most of the sites on this list, but it can be an excellent income source if you have some tutoring experience and actually have notes to share.

Tutors earn 25 credits for every approved file they upload – or thrice that if they are an Elite Note Taker. The credits are redeemable for cash or gift cards at Domino’s Starbucks, Amazon, and other major stores.

12. Freelancer

Freelancer will appear anywhere online work is mentioned, and deservedly so. The site has over 61 million users and can be accessed from anywhere worldwide.

Many freelance workers fancy Freelancer.com because it is free to join, is friendly to beginners, and allows contractors to decide their own pay rates. Additionally, it offers multiple withdrawal options (PayPal, Skrill, Wire Transfer, Express Withdrawal).

To thrive on Freelancer providing homework help, make sure your profile stands out because that’s where everything begins. Proper use of keywords and a thorough self-marketing approach will suffice.

The bidding wars over at Upwork were not a reason enough to make me leave it out of the list.

The platform may be notorious for being overcrowded, but that is not exclusive to the contractors’ side. There is an astonishingly huge number of clients too.

Your work is to ensure you have a good profile, reasonable pay rates, and good work ethics, and you will stand out.

Many homework helpers do not sign up for Upwork because it is not dedicated to connecting tutors and students. That makes sense, of course, since the platform is not tailored for tutoring, but it’s also misleading.

Some of the highest freelance earners work on Upwork, and let’s face it; registration is free, and no experience is required to use it. Why not try it and form your own opinion?

14. Eduboard

Hiring US and Canadian graduates and senior students, Eduboard is a website similar to Chegg that helps students do their homework and prepare for exams and tests.

If you have never heard of it, that is because it is still a young company with few mentions here and there.

Subjects that you can help with include Science, Math, Computer Science, Languages, Journalism, Social Studies, and Arts.

It is possible that you may not find your area of expertise, but the company invites you to request its inclusion.

Eduboard simplifies tutoring and homework by providing three tutoring options – online sessions, video tutorials, and quick answers.

Online sessions pay $20 per half an hour, while quick answers and video tutorials start from $2 and $15 respectively. The student gets to decide how you will teach them.

Skooli invites you to join their team if you believe you have what it takes to teach and offer homework help. The Toronto-based company pays CAD$25 per hour and lets contractors to set their own schedule.

You can join Skooli from any region in the world, and it doesn’t matter whether you are a native or a non-native English speaker. All you need, according to the site, is expertise, a computer, and an internet connection.

By expertise we mean teaching certifications and proof of education. These you will provide during the initial registration. A representative will call you to discuss your qualifications and answer your questions only if you pass this stage.

Skooli pays its contractors via PayPal. You can request a payout anytime you cross the $100 threshold and expect the money in your account the following Friday.

Which site did you like most? Don’t shy from finding more information about it on the internet.

Offering online homework help can be a well-paying side hustle, and if you have what it takes, nothing should stop you from launching yourself into the game.

9 Best Homework Help Websites

July 22, 2023

homework help like chegg

When I was in high school, resources for extra homework help weren’t exactly abundant. If you were struggling with a Shakespeare sonnet, you could always run to the bookstore and pick up a CliffNotes guide. SparkNotes was also gaining in popularity. But these early homework help resources had limited catalogs and were focused primarily on literature. Today, I imagine students suffer from the opposite problem—having too many choices when it comes to homework help websites. When the options are seemingly endless, knowing what to look out for takes on an added importance. Below, I’ll go through a list of 9 stand-out homework help websites and briefly discuss what makes them worth a visit.

Homework Help Websites – The Basics

The best homework help websites do more than just spit out an answer to that tricky math problem. They actually help students learn the material. Common features of homework help websites are educational videos and lectures, practice tests and quizzes, study tools like flashcards, and Q&As with experts. Many sites offer features that allow students to ask specific questions and get real-time feedback. There are also a number of services that offer one-on-one tutoring. Some homework help sites are free, while others require a paid subscription.

1) Khan Academy

Khan Academy is an amazing resource for students of all ages. It’s free, and it really is an academy—it offers full courses in a wide array of subjects, from pre-K math to high school physics. The courses consist of readings, video lectures, practice exercises, and quizzes. The breadth of material is impressive. In math alone, I see course listings for Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Statistics, Multivariable calculus—you get the idea. Khan Academy also offers a wide variety of AP courses, state-specific curricula, test-prep programs, and life skill courses, like personal finance.

It’s important to note that Khan Academy isn’t a one-on-one tutoring platform. But because of their extensive library of material, the search function is especially powerful. Try it out. I did a search for argumentative essay help, and found a comprehensive guide to writing argumentative essays that was a part of a larger writing course.

Chegg is a paid homework help service. Unlike Khan Academy, Chegg isn’t built around specific courses. Rather, it offers a variety of homework-support resources. Among those resources are plagiarism and grammar checkers, a proofreading service, and a “math solver”, which allows students to enter a problem and get back both a solution and a detailed step-by-step explanation of how the problem was solved. Perhaps the most powerful tool Chegg offers is its “Expert Q&A” feature. This service allows students to take a picture of their homework problem, upload it to the site, and get a detailed response in return. Chegg’s emphasis on process and explanation make it a valuable educational resource for students—not just a way to get a quick answer.

Best Homework Help Websites (Continued)

Quizlet is a well-known and worthwhile study resource. It offers a variety of courses, and it also has an expert-response feature. But Quizlet’s best feature, in my option, is the flashcards tool. Students can create their own digital decks of cards and practice them on Quizlet—just like an old fashion set of index cards. I had a ton of success using Quizlet’s flash card feature to help me memorize words for my foreign language requirement in college. It’s a simple but powerful tool. Although often maligned as a learning method, rote rehearsal and spaced repetition are effective ways to encode information . Quizlet’s flashcard feature is a great way to put those techniques into practice.

4) Socratic

is an AI-powered homework support app that allows students to type or take pictures of questions and receive solutions right away. Since it works with AI, it relies on the web’s vast stores of accumulated knowledge—you’re not interacting with a human tutor. Nonetheless, I found it to be an extremely helpful tool. I tried it out first using a specific math problem. In just a few seconds I was provided with the solution and an explainer with relevant formulas, plus a graphic to help visualize the underlying logic. There were also suggested links to additional resources. For example, when I asked Socratic to explain how the German genitive case works, it suggested a YouTube video and a number of articles from blogs and other language-learning sites.

Since Socratic doesn’t feature courses or one-on-one tutoring support, I wouldn’t lean on it if I were really struggling in a particular class. But as a tool to check your work, make sure you’re on the right track, and become aware of additional resources, it’s worth a download.

5) Photomath

Photomath is, as you might have guessed, a site for math homework help. Like other homework help websites, Photomath allows students to take a picture of a problem and receive an instant, step-by-step solution. Included along with the solution is an explanation of relevant concepts and formulas, plus videos covering mathematical concepts. Photomath does offer a few basic courses, too. So if in addition to homework-specific help you want to brush up on the basics, they’ve got you covered in arithmetic, algebra, and calculus crash courses.

6) Studypool

Studypool is a paid homework support service that provides solutions to specific questions. Studypool offers support in all the major subjects, with a particular emphasis on science. Students can ask questions on everything from anatomy to physics. Like other services, students upload their exact questions or problems directly to the site. But Studypool’s payment model is a bit different: instead of paying for tutoring time or a monthly subscription, students pay for solutions to each question they submit. When a student submits a question, tutors submit bids to answer them. The student then can select which tutor/price option works best. After students select the price and tutor they want, they’re connected with the tutor and given the solution and explanation via messenger.

The draw of Studypool is that it gives students access to real (i.e., human) tutors who are experts in their field. The downside is that pricing isn’t transparent, and students pay per question.

7) College Info Geek

College Info Geek is the study-support website that I wish I knew about when I was in high school and college (they didn’t pay me to write that, I swear). The site focuses not on specific courses or questions, but on how to become a more effective learner. Here it’s all about “learning how to learn”—study tips, memorization and note-taking techniques, and much more. The articles are well-researched, clearly-communicated, practical, and comprehensive. For example, the article on how to improve your memory includes a breakdown of the different types of memory processes, memorization techniques, and even a discussion of how nutrition affects memory. College Info Geek is a great resource for everyone, not just high school and college students.

8) SparkNotes

Yes, Sparknotes made the list! The site offers lessons in a whole bunch of subjects—biology, chemistry, computer science, history, philosophy, math—but its specialty is literature. SparkNotes provides summaries and analyses of novels, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction, from The Canterbury Tales to Toni Morrison, Saul Bellow, and Junot Diaz. SparkNotes breaks down books into sub-sections and provides synopses and analyses for each section. There are also separate pages for character breakdowns, discussions of themes and motifs, and explanations of important quotes. I’d caution against using SparkNotes if you’re trying to “hack” a novel or poem and get simple answers about what it “means.” But as a way to supplement your own understanding and interpretation, it’s a great resource. Shmoop is also worth checking out for extra support in literature, poetry, mythology, and the history of literary movements.

9) Grammarly

I’m not sure if Grammarly is an obvious or unexpected choice to round out the list. Either way, it deserves a mention here. Grammarly is a writing tool. It checks and suggests corrections for incorrectly spelled words and misused punctuation. But Grammarly also scans and corrects for things like clarity and vocab usage. It flags sentences that are vague, or overly wordy, and alerts you if you’re using that flashy vocab word incorrectly. It even gives suggestions if it thinks your writing is a bit bland. I don’t see Grammarly as a crutch, but rather as a tool. It can help you master those pesky recurring grammar and usage issues. Always mix up effect and affect? Grammarly will continue to course correct until you’ve got it down yourself.

Homework Help Websites – Final Thoughts

None of the above homework help websites should be seen as a panacea. Each has benefits and drawbacks, strengths and weak points. The list is far from exhaustive. And the sites don’t have to be used in isolation. Try a few out, mix and match. College Info Geek is an excellent supplement to any study regimen. Socratic can be used as a tool to check answers for math homework, and at the same time you can use Grammarly to describe your problem to a tutor on Chegg. At their best, these sites are more than quick fixes to stubborn homework problems—they’re aids to genuine learning.

Other Websites Like Chegg That Every Professor Should Know

April 9, 2022.

As long as there’s been formal education, students have been looking for ways to cheat. While many students will do their best and honestly engage with the materials, some will always look for the easy way to get good grades. That means cheating, copying answers, and doing whatever they can to avoid learning the material.

The internet has made this much more straightforward. Dozens of websites offer students fast access to everything from study guides to entire filled-in tests. Some can be used for honest studying, but they can also be used to cheat.

Chegg is the best-known of these sites, but it’s not alone. Here’s what you need to know about Chegg and its competitors, how they help students cheat, and what you can do to prevent them from impacting the academic integrity of your classes.

What Is Chegg?

Chegg is intended to be a 24/7 homework help website . It’s built to act as a kind of digital tutor. Its original purpose was to be an accessible and inexpensive way for students to get help studying and understanding their homework. The site offers many services, including:

  • Homework help
  • Exam prep and practice
  • Topic breakdowns
  • Textbook rentals
  • Paper proofreading

Students can use all of these services in perfectly legitimate ways. However, the first two tools are also ripe for abuse.

Your students can go to Chegg and search or ask questions straight from your homework or online tests. They can use the answers they find as their own. Many Chegg “homework help” pages are simply answered homework sheets.

If you reuse your tests and homework assignments, your students may be able to search your exact questions and find answers from your past classes. Why? Because Chegg offers students money in exchange for homework sheets and answers. Yes, Chegg will pay your students to help your future classes cheat.

Of course, Chegg does offer anti-cheating tools for faculty, too. The site tracks IP addresses, emails, and account names to monitor who has accessed what materials. You can contact Chegg to determine whether your students have been accessing materials to cheat. Still, being able to track cheating after the fact is only necessary because Chegg enables it in the first place.

8 Sites Like Chegg That Students Use

Chegg is nowhere near the only site that offers students homework “help.” Plenty of other sites take advantage of the perennial student desire to study as little as possible. Like Chegg, many of these sites can be used to study honestly, but not all. Some of these sites are specifically built to help students cheat.

Knowing the different study “help” sites and how they work allows you to monitor them for leaked material. It can also help you spot and prevent cheating among your students, making it easier to maintain your courses’ academic integrity. Keep reading to discover the eight most common study “help” sites like Chegg and why you should care about their content.

Course Hero

Course Hero is a subscription-based service that offers 24/7 homework tutoring , just like Chegg. It also provides “Textbook Solutions & Explanations,” including step-by-step walkthroughs of homework problems in most common texts.

The tutoring element of Course Hero is valuable for any student that needs help. However, the step-by-step explanations make it difficult for professors to assign graded homework questions. Students can simply go on Course Hero and search for their textbook to discover the answer and turn it in as their own work.

Quizlet is a study website designed to help students quiz themselves on their courses. The site offers everything from flashcards to quizzes and multiple-choice tests. It’s an excellent way to memorize facts, such as dates, names, and medical terminology. Students can create their own Quizlet sets or use other students’ public sets.

The public sets are where problems with cheating arise. Students using standard textbooks, or even pupils from your previous courses, may put up entire Quizlet sets that include answers to homework questions and common definitions. Students can use Quizlet to quickly cheat on digital quizzes for classes like medical terminology .

OneClass brands itself as a personalized coursework help site based on community. It offers everything from homework help to class notes, study guides, textbook solutions, and more. The site actively offers current students “revenue” for uploading their notes and homework assignments.

Students can search the site to get help with their homework, but they can also get answers to any homework assignment that’s already been uploaded. They can even reach out to other students who’ve taken the class to get answers from them. OneClass is a one-stop shop for pupils who want someone else to do the work for them.

Bartleby is another textbook solution and homework help site. The platform brands itself as a way to study the questions professors haven’t assigned in a textbook. Still, students can absolutely look up answers to any questions in the books uploaded on the site.

Like other homework help sites, students can access tutors, homework helpers, and even an online writing center. However, the primary benefit of the site’s subscription service is the textbook solutions portion. Students who use Bartleby can access answers to the most common textbooks used by introductory courses nationwide.

Socratic is an app designed to help students study everything from math and biology to poetry. The program is an app powered by Google AI. The student takes a picture of the homework problem they’re struggling with, and the AI recognizes the subject and problem. Then it walks the student through the solution or explanation.

While Socratic is a helpful tool for learning on ungraded assignments, it presents problems on graded work. Students can use the app to solve their homework for them and use its explanations to “show their work.” That makes it difficult for teachers to identify that Socratic was used to do the homework unless the student uses a solution method different from what they were taught in class.

Photomath is specifically dedicated to helping students “learn” math. It’s both a digital platform and an app, so students can access it just about anywhere. Photomath allows you to upload a math question and walks you through the process of solving it. However, this also makes it a quick way for students to solve their homework problems without doing the work themselves.

Photomath is particularly tricky because it doesn’t rely on someone having uploaded answers to questions. The app can simply do the math itself. It even demonstrates how the student can show their work. The only way to genuinely prevent students from using Photomath is to require them to solve equations in a proctored environment without using their phones.

PaperCoach is specifically a homework completion service. People can use the service to have someone else write everything from essays to dissertations for them. The service allows lazy students to pay another writer to do their homework on their behalf. The tagline is even “We do your homework so that you don’t have to.” Obviously, this completely violates the concept of academic integrity.

School Solver

School Solver is an online tutoring website that markets itself as offering help, not solutions. However, the platform doesn’t monitor how tutors and students interact. Students offer an amount of money for help on a question, and tutors will answer depending on whether they think the pay is worth it. Students who are willing to pay more for “help” are more likely to find a tutor who’s willing to simply do the homework assignment for them.

Talking to Your Class About Homework “Help” Websites

It’s almost impossible for you to prevent your students from accessing so-called homework help websites. Furthermore, many of these sites do offer valuable materials for students who simply want to study. The best way to manage these sites is to talk to your students about academic integrity and how these sites violate it, then follow these tips:

  • Address academic integrity in your syllabus. Your syllabus should include a clear definition of academic integrity. Explain why cheating is bad: it prevents them from learning, so they won’t be prepared for future courses and are more likely to fail. You can also cover the social consequences of academic integrity.
  • Define cheating.  Next, explain what you consider cheating as opposed to using provided materials. Include an explanation of plagiarism, too.
  • Set clear expectations.  Once you’ve explained what you will treat as cheating, explain the consequences: automatic fails, a report to the Dean of Students, expulsion from the course, or anything else that you consider fair. Setting expectations early can help discourage pupils from considering cheating in the first place.
  • Don’t name cheating sites, but explain that they aren’t worth it.  Your students may take homework “help” sites at face value. Explain that copying answers from them is plagiarism or cheating just as much as copying an answer from a book. Don’t name any sites — they don’t need the advertisement — but make it clear that you can and will check to see if any students use answers from those platforms instead of doing the work themselves.
  • Talk about cheating in class.  Talk about everything mentioned above in class, too. Some pupils will simply ignore your syllabus. By going through these details during class time, you ensure that everyone is aware of your expectations, and no one will have the excuse that they “didn’t know.”

By including information about academic integrity in your syllabus and going over it in class, you reinforce that cheating is unacceptable. While you’ll never prevent it entirely, you can make sure that fewer students consider it a safe potential option.

Working with Students You Suspect Are Cheating

Even after you’ve had a class discussion about academic integrity, you’ll still run into students who prefer to cheat. When these people crop up, you’ll need to take steps to maintain the integrity of your courses yourself. Here’s how to manage students you believe are cheating through these sites:

  • Check their work against different “help” sites.  Many students will copy work word-for-word from homework sites. If you receive an answer that doesn’t match a student’s typical writing style, you can google their answer. You may see it pop up word for word, proving that they plagiarized it.
  • Reach out to the sites you believe they used. Some students are canny enough to change the wording of copied assignments enough to pass plagiarism checks. If you still think someone’s cheating, you can reach out to the sites you think they used. For instance, Chegg will help you double-check to see if your students have been accessing their practice resources to copy them.
  • Implement proctored tests.  If you can’t find evidence that a student is cheating, you have another possible solution. Either bring the student on-campus for their tests or implement proctored online exams . A proctored exam prevents students from using other resources, so they can’t simply copy and paste answers. If a student’s grade drops dramatically after proctored tests, you can trust that you’ve prevented cheating successfully.

You can also work with platforms like Caduceus International Publishing to generate unique homework assignments for every class. This helps you avoid having your materials leaked online in the first place. As a result, students are less likely to find easy answers with a simple Google search and more likely to put in the work and learn the materials.

Keep Your Course Integrity Safe From Homework “Help” Sites

Sites like Chegg and others are a permanent part of the internet. Even if some of these sites are closed, others will arise in their places. Having a plan to address sites that aid cheating is critical for educators both online and in person.

By talking to your students about academic integrity, implementing unique content, and proctoring exams , you can reduce the impact of cheating on your courses. By understanding the sites they use, you can also identify cheating after the fact. In combination, these actions let you protect your students’ education and your institution’s reputation at the same time.

In-Depth Chegg Review For 2023 — Is It Worth Trying?

Chegg is an online education platform based in California. Two businessmen, Osman Rashid and Aayush Phumbhra, founded the company. The initial goal was to rent, buy, and sell textbooks, but the platform expanded by offering tutoring, scholarships, and homework solutions.

Today, Chegg is well-known for providing services to students and helping them with their homework. The platform covers various subjects, from math and history to finance, computer science, and algebra. Some Chegg reviews claim that services are not legit, so we’ll discuss this further in the article.

Chegg started renting textbooks, but today, it’s well-known for its tutoring services. You can use the platform as a tutor or a student. If you’re having trouble with a particular subject, there are step-by-step explanations and over 22,000 solutions. Chegg tutors review.

Chegg Tutors is an online tutoring service for students of all ages. Students can pick their tutors based on their profiles. Classes are conducted in virtual classrooms and are mobile-friendly.

To become a tutor on Chegg, you’ll have to meet specific requirements, such as teaching experience and enrollment or graduation from a four-year university. Once you get accepted, you’ll be able to see tutoring requests from students. There is a practical set of tools you can use for interaction with students. In short, you can use a video chat tool, a virtual whiteboard, and a text window while conducting a class.

For example, use the whiteboard to present the problem (draw it on the board). Try to find a solution by asking students about their opinion. Help them work through the problem by giving them advice via video.

Some Chegg tutoring reviews mention the importance of the Chegg Tutors honor code. You are not allowed to help your students during online exams as a tutor. The result of this code violation is profile deactivation (you won’t be allowed to work).

This honor code states that tutors are strictly forbidden to cheat or plagiarize. Moreover, students cannot use the platform to cheat on their exams. Chegg is authorized to reveal all the information to students’ educational institutions if contacted by them. You can find the code on the official website.

Chegg Tutor Requirements

To become a Chegg tutor, you must fill out an online application and meet the requirements. You’ll need the following:

  • The photo of your diploma, ID card, and scanned copies of your transcripts
  • A picture of you holding your ID (passport or driver’s license)
  • To pass the proficiency test (in some cases)
  • Access to a computer, stable internet connection, a mic, and a camera
  • A PayPal account
  • A short introductory video (this is optional)

According to Chegg Tutors, it takes about one week for them to process your application. (However, it sometimes takes longer). You can log into your account and accept students’ requests when accepted.

Chegg Tutor Salary

The typical tutor on Chegg makes $20 per hour. The hourly rate can range from $20 to $22. You can earn an average annual salary of $44,170. Your pay depends on the number of minutes you work during the week; the minimum working time is five minutes.

That means you’ll always make at least $1.67 if you work at least five minutes daily. Payments will arrive in your PayPal account every Thursday morning.

Tips for Starting Chegg Careers

There are ways to boost your earnings and even start a career on Chegg. Here’s what you can do:

  • You can earn many bonuses if you’re teaching popular subjects.
  • You can earn $10 every time you use the referral system (refer a tutor).
  • If you want to make more money, ensure you’re available during midterm and final examination periods (midterms are in October and March, and finals are in December and May).
  • Your “available now” status must always be on.
  • Don’t forget to answer students’ questions whenever you can.

Chegg Solutions Reviews

Chegg offers several solutions to fix the problems students often face. You can choose between textbook solutions and expert Q&A. What is the difference?

If you choose to use textbook solutions, you’ll be able to use step-by-step guidelines and video tutorials. You’ll need to enter the ISBN (from your textbook) in the search tab to see the possible solution for your problem.

On the other hand, the Q&A option will get you in touch with an expert in the field who will answer your question in less than 30 minutes. To get this answer, you’ll have to take a picture (or screenshot) of your homework and send it to Chegg.

Chegg Study Review

As we mentioned above, there are two options: textbook solutions and expert Q&A.

If you’re having trouble with a particular subject, you can search for the answer using solutions for 22,000 ISBNs on this platform or step-by-step explanations.

How to use Chegg Study:

  • Go to Chegg Study, and click “Try Chegg Study.”
  • Enter your credit card information and click “Join Now.”
  • You’ll have to enter your phone number, after which you’ll receive a text containing the link to the app.
  • To find the solutions to your questions, click “Find Textbook Solutions” and enter the title or the textbook’s author’s name.
  • You’ll see a menu in the left corner with the textbook’s chapters. You can scroll to the section you need.
  • Click on the problem, and you’ll get a step-by-step solution.

Chegg Book Rental Reviews

On Chegg, you can rent ebooks and hard copies. If you rent a book, you’ll need to return it on the due date. If you’re late with your return, the platform will charge you an additional fee or the book’s full price.

To extend your due date and avoid paying an additional fee, you need to contact Chegg.

Benefits of renting textbooks :

  • Renting books saves money. You can compare prices and see if there are any discounts.
  • Flexible rental terms. You can contact Chegg for a free extension if you need to keep your book past the due date.
  • In addition to renting, you can purchase new and used editions or download textbooks.
  • You get a four-week free trial of Chegg Study.
  • Textbook deliveries include gifts and discounts.

Chegg Buyback Reviews

Chegg used to buy used textbooks from students, but now it outsources this service to GoTextbooks. You log in through your account and link through to GoTextbooks from there.

You just need to enter ISBN and send the book. After reviewing the book’s condition, they’ll pay you in one of several ways (gift card, Chegg credit system) within 15 days. Alternatively, you can donate low-value books.

The standard for selling books on GoTextbooks and buying books on Chegg differs. You can highlight the books you rent, but when you sell used books, the site is very fussy about the condition and may ship highlighted books back to you at your cost.

Moreover, some Chegg sell books reviews mentioned poor customer service, the lack of communication, and bad tracking service, while others praised the swiftness of its buyback service. However, Chegg doesn’t have this option anymore. It now only allows you to rent or buy books (hard and digital copies) and other solutions for students.

Other places to sell textbooks include BookScouter, Amazon, or TextbookRush.

Chegg Ebook Reviews

To read your ebooks, you need to download the Chegg eReader app, and then you can make a purchase.

How to purchase:

  • To make a purchase, you’ll need to sign in to your Chegg account and click on “Books.”
  • Scroll down to the book you want to buy and select it (if you’re going to buy more books, you’ll have to repeat all the steps).
  • You can choose between the “Extend” or “Purchase” button. This will transfer you to another page.
  • Click the “Select Here” (next to the book title) and select “Purchase.”
  • To complete the purchase, select the “Checkout” button and follow the next few steps.

Chegg Homework Help Reviews

On top of textbook solutions and expert Q&A, Chegg provides homework help services. Take a photo of your assignment, send it to Chegg, and they’ll get someone to help you.

You can also use the database to find similar homework problems and solutions or compare them. There are many video tutorials (walkthroughs) that can help you out as well.

The homework help allows you to:

  • Search for a solution to your homework assignment in a large library section. Find step-by-step textbook solutions for many subjects.
  • Use the help of experts in the field. They are available 24/7. Take a picture (or scan) of your homework, and send it to Chegg. You’ll get a detailed answer within 30 minutes.
  • If you’re a visual type, you can watch walkthrough videos.

Ease of Use

Chegg tutoring jobs are suitable for people who pass the requirements test. The site is user-friendly and easy to navigate, and most tutors enjoy it. There is only one disadvantage related to the company’s first-come-first-serve model . What does this mean?

In short, you’ll see many tutoring requests on your screen, but as soon as you click on them, the system will tell you they are not available anymore. This can be frustrating for most tutors.

Plans and Pricing

How much does chegg cost.

Chegg offers a one-week free trial that can be canceled during those seven days. The monthly subscription fee depends on the tools and packages you want to use. An annual subscription will cost you $74.95. You can reap many benefits if you choose an annual or monthly subscription.

In addition to the one-year subscription, the monthly cost of Chegg  is $14.95, and it includes basic services :

  • Standard shipping is free of charge if your order is $35 or more. It usually takes 7–10 business days. Keep in mind that this fee doesn’t include taxes.
  • You have 21 days to return a purchased book.
  • You can get up to 90% discount on textbooks.
  • You’ll get one month of free access to Chegg Study, which includes step-by-step solutions and expert Q&A.
  • As mentioned before in our Chegg review , rental extensions are free.
  • Each month, you’ll get detailed solutions for five different textbooks.
  • You are allowed to post 20 questions per month (to Q&A experts).
  • You’ll get unlimited view-only access to 25 million homework solutions answered by experts in their fields.
  • You’ll be able to use help from Chegg tutors (this service is free for the first 30 minutes) .

You can also purchase the Chegg Study Pack for $19.95 per month, including the services mentioned above, plus video walkthroughs, practice sets, and a plagiarism checker.

Chegg Membership Cost

Being a Chegg member provides many benefits, such as access to step-by-step textbook solutions for five different textbooks each month, posting 20 questions each month, and getting access to 25 million answered homework questions.

Everything except the practice problems, guided videos, math solver, and writing tool is at your disposal. To get full access to all the tools, you’ll need a Premium Chegg study subscription for $19.95 per month. You can also subscribe for Homework Help by itself for $14.95 per month.

Chegg Writing service costs $9.95 per month (individually). It gives you access to EasyBib (easy-to-use tools for creating proper citations), Plagiarism Checker, and Grammar Checker.

If you want to use the Chegg plagiarism checker, you have to upload your document (or copy and paste it) to the checker. When your scan is complete, you’ll see the option ”return to paper.” Click on this option to see your results. The matching sentences will be highlighted.

The Math Solver alone costs $9.95 per month. It offers step-by-step solutions to math problems in the following subjects :

  • Pre-Algebra
  • Precalculus
  • Trigonometry
  • Statistics and Probability
  • Advanced Math

If you cancel your Chegg subscription plans, you can still use its services until the next billing date. Monthly subscribers are allowed to pause their subscription at any time. If you use a free trial version, make sure to cancel it before the billing begins to avoid the charges going through.

You can switch your membership within the first 30 days of paying for your annual subscription. For more information, check out the help center. When it comes to the Chegg refund policy, you can get a full refund for your annual Chegg study subscription.

Account sharing is one more critical thing most customers complain about. You should know that Chegg doesn’t allow multiple users. You can have only one account and are not allowed to share it. If you share the account, Chegg will suspend it, and you won’t be able to use it for a specific period.

All the information you provide to create an account must be accurate and complete. As we already mentioned, it’s forbidden to share your Chegg account. To prevent suspension of your account, you need to log out after every use. Remember that you’ll need to use a single device to access your account.

Failing to do so can trigger account suspension. Your account can be suspended if you use different devices to log in or enter your account from multiple locations. These, and other factors, can indicate a shared account.

E.g., if you log into your account from another city (state) using a different device, Chegg will suspend your account.

Chegg Scholarship Reviews

Chegg began as an online textbook store for renting and selling books. But today, it hosts over $1 billion in scholarships, including its own scholarships. Chegg scholarships range from $500 to $12,500. You can win a monthly scholarship challenge that all US citizens are eligible to apply for. You must be at least 16 years old if you want to apply.

Chegg gives personalized scholarships depending on your profile. There are five awards available, each worth between $1,500 and $5,000 in scholarships.

According to many Chegg reviews, scholarships are also available for international students. To apply, you must show transcripts, write an essay, and get a reference form. There are 60 international scholarships available.

Overall, there are over 25,000 scholarships available on Chegg.

Refund Policy

As mentioned before, Chegg offers a refund policy that can be requested within 21 days of purchasing a book. To get the full refund (minus shipping), the book you send back must be in the same condition as it was when you received it.

When it comes to digital books (ebooks), you’ll have a full refund if you return the book within 14 days. You’ll see all the instructions on your Account page.

Online Ratings

There are a lot of Chegg complaints, and some people consider it to be a platform that helps students cheat on their exams, present plagiarized work as original, etc. It’s safe to say this platform is not for everyone.

Tutors benefit the most from it, even though they can’t rely on Chegg as their only source of income. Students can benefit from Chegg if they don’t use its services to cheat on exams.

According to Chegg customer service reviews, several problems are recurring on this platform:

  • Many people complain about the account suspension due to the alleged account sharing.
  • You won’t get a refund if your question is unanswered or incorrectly answered.
  • Many people complain about the non-responsive customer service and non-intuitive account ID.
  • Some hard copies are not in good condition.
  • Some people believe Chegg is an unethical platform that helps students cheat.

As opposed to these claims, Chegg employee reviews tell a different story. People seem to think this platform offers excellent service that people sometimes use for illegitimate purposes. That said, some colleges even banned their students from using it, which is to be expected as reviews cite Chegg as one of the best tutoring websites.

This brings us back to the importance of the honor code. Tutors are not allowed to cheat or plagiarize. Moreover, students mustn’t use Chegg to cheat on their exams. The platform is authorized to reveal all the information to educational institutions if requested.

Despite some Chegg ratings that are not as high, the tutors’ knowledge and credentials are indisputable (and Chegg offers many tutors). But when posting a question, be sure to double-check the facts. It seems that expert Q&A is probably Chegg’s drawback, together with the non-responsive customer service and non-intuitive account ID.

Overall, Chegg is a legit platform, not a scam, as some may think. In fact, when it comes to the Course Hero vs Chegg debate, Chegg comes out on top in most categories.

Final Verdict

In these Chegg reviews, we discussed the platform’s offers, solutions, pricing, tutoring, and customer service. Like other online learning platforms , it has its cons and pros. All things considered, Chegg can be useful to students who use it as an accessory and not a way to cheat. So is Chegg a scam? No. Is it legit? Yes. Many reviews on the internet prove that.

Is Chegg worth a try? If you’re looking for cheap college textbooks to buy or rent, Chegg is one of the best options out there, but when it comes to other services, it’s maybe better to check other alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Many reviews on the internet prove this platform is relatively reliable. It offers help to students through solutions, textbook materials, and assistance from online tutors. Chegg is known for letting some mistakes go unnoticed and occasionally providing incorrect information, but that doesn’t make it fake. The platform is legit and helpful if you use it the right way.  The most common issues people have are related to customer service, which is not as good as you would expect from a professional service provider.

The average tutor on Chegg can make $20 per hour. Hourly rates usually range from $20 to $22. An average annual salary is $44,170. The more you work, the more money you make since the payment depends on the exact number of minutes you work. You can work for a minimum of five minutes. In other words, you can always make at least $1.67 for five minutes of work.

Chegg Math Solver is an application that helps students solve math problems. You need to take a picture of the assignment (or a screenshot) or enter the problem using the keyboard.  Chegg Math Solver can handle numerous math problems, including the ones with integrals and basic matrices. When students get their answers, they can use the additional information to double-check the answer or understand it better. The cost of Chegg Math Solver is $9.99 per month. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android. We hope you enjoyed these Chegg reviews and that we managed to shed some light on the services of this platform.

Although Chegg provides useful resources for its users, there are some drawbacks associated with the platform. For instance, the app does not offer live games and challenges, which can be useful for learners looking to test their knowledge against others. Additionally, Chegg does not provide mindfulness modules, which have been proven to help reduce stress and anxiety levels, something that many college and university students can benefit from.

Chegg is a popular app for studying, which many students use in order to learn. However, it lacks features that the Shiken platform has such as live games and challenges, mindfulness, and being a school focused experience. On the other hand, Shiken can be used by professionals to further their higher education, creating content, selling learning content, and creating courses and questions with the help of AI.

Shiken's AI question generation and AI tutor make it easy for students to learn from. With Chegg, there are no AI-based tools to help you understand difficult concepts or answer tricky questions.

Some of the key benefits of Shiken compared to Chegg include:

  • Learners can create their own content
  • Teachers can sell their learning content and create video courses
  • Features AI question generation and an AI tutor to help students learn

Shiken AI vs Chegg

When comparing Shiken AI and Chegg, there are some key differences. Unlike Chegg, Shiken AI is not limited to school and college age users, but can be used by professionals looking to further their knowledge in specific fields. Additionally, Shiken AI allows its learners to create their own content, whilst providing AI question generation and AI tutor features to help guide their learning. Further, Shiken teachers can also create video courses and monetize their learning content through the platform.

Chegg is one of the most popular study apps available. It offers a variety of features such as flashcards, quizzes and practice tests. Nevertheless, it lacks some of the more advanced features that other study apps have, such as live games, mindfulness features, AI-based question generation, and more.
