The Nehru family’s immense wealth helped him secure a good education and graduate in Natural Sciences. He studied many subjects such as politics, economics, literature, and history. He went to study law in London and went back to Allahabad High Court, following in his father’s footsteps as a barrister. However, he quickly realised that he was not interested in law and was more drawn to nationalist politics.

Speech 2 – Children’s Day: Chacha Nehru

Good Morning respected Principal Sir, honourable guest, teachers, parents, and my dear friends. I am happy to represent myself on the behalf of Ashoka House, I want to especially thank my house caption for giving me this opportunity to deliver my speech on this occasion.

Children’s day is celebrated on the 14th of November every year and we celebrate this occasion on the birth anniversary of Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru, who was a great leader as well as a person who loved children. He was the first Prime Minister of India and was also one of the best.

Nehru Ji loved children because of the freedom activities he lived many years in Jail when his daughter Indira Gandhi was born. When he came back, she was grown up and he missed her childhood. After some time, he had a son who died just after his birth. These were some reasons which attracted him more towards children. Once he also addressed that children are his biggest strength as well as his weakness. Therefore, he wished to celebrate his birthday with children and was also called Chacha (Uncle) by children.

He used to feel happy with them and his love for children was not hidden and after his death, it was decided to celebrate his birthday as Children’s Day. He was a great leader, father, writer, orator, freedom fighter, kind person, one of the best PM, good decision maker, intelligent, etc.

He was one of the most popular personalities not only in India but also in foreign countries. He also brought the concept of some of the best educational institutions like IIT’s, AIIMS, etc so that the students could get educated within their nation and they don’t have to travel abroad. He was the foundation of development in India and was the only Prime Minister to holds the position for 18 years.

I don’t think I am going to end this topic because there still a lot to tell about him but the time is forcing me to stop. So, I want to end with these words by Jawaharlal Nehru:

“Time is not measured by the passing of years but by what one does, what one feels, and what one achieves.”

He had two elder sisters and they were Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit and Krishna Hutheesing. Both were social activists and played an important role in freedom. He had his higher education from Trinity College, Cambridge and after his studies, he returned to India. Then he served in Allahabad High Court as an advocate.

Then he was married to Kamala Kaul in the year 1916, unfortunately, she died at an early age in the year 1936. Meanwhile, they had a daughter Indira.

World War – I also broke in between 1914–15 and he severed his best as a volunteer in St. John Ambulance in Allahabad itself. World War changed his views and forced him to raise his voice for his nation and as a result, he took part in a national movement for Home Rule.

This was his debut in the freedom struggle, although there were many acts performed before, he was never so serious. After this act, he became an active social reformer.

Slowly he has developed himself as a leader and also developed a good friendship with Gandhiji. After taking part in social activities he also started wearing a khadi kurta and a white Gandhi Topi, to express his respect for his nation. He took part in various moments like the Non-Cooperation movement, Home rule Movement, Quit India Movement, etc, and was also sent jail many times but he never stopped.

He faced lots of ups and downs still he never lied to anyone and was loyal to his nation as well as Gandhiji. Soon India was free in 1947 and this day has been carved with golden words in Indian history and Nehru Ji was one of the most prominent names in this freedom struggle.

In between, he also faced World War- II, the Partition of Pakistan, etc and finally after crossing all these hazards he was elected as the first Prime Minister of free India. It was a proud moment for him as well as for the country. He remained on the post for 18 years that was up to 1964, up to his death.

He has been marked as one of the best Prime Ministers of India and he brought a lot of policies and services for people and was the imitator of development in India. He developed many educational institutions as well as medical facilities in the country and tried his best to provide all kinds of facilities.

He was also interested in writing and when he was in Jail, he wrote many books like The Discovery of India, Glimpses of World History, Toward Freedom, Letters from a Father to His Daughter, His autobiography, etc. They are still read with great interest even today. He was awarded Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour of India, in the year 1955. He was best in many ways and we really feel proud to have his name in our history.

He is still alive in his books and when we read them, we can feel it. We should learn from his personality and this will be our true tribute to him.
