Ten Tips for Using 360 Videos in PowerPoint Presentations

I’m a regular speaker in front of large audiences and have used 360 videos and panoramas in my professional presentations for over five years.  I often get rave reviews and find that 360s engage audiences and make my presentations stand out.

Here are my top ten tips for incorporating 360 videos and panoramas into your PowerPoint slideshows.  These tips and techniques will take your presentations to the next level and will leave your audiences wanting more.

No Camera Crew?!  Use 360 Videos and Panoramas Instead

One of the most exciting things about using 360 videos and panoramas is that you get to choose your point of view (POV) after taking the shot.  With a 360 camera everything you see and experience is included in the shot.  Once you get home and start editing on your computer you can focus on the subjects and views that convey your message or create the impact you are seeking.

This is like having your own camera crew along, taking shots from various angles with multiple cameras!  Several top-notch editing programs can be used to edit 360 videos including Adobe Premier Pro, Cyberlink PowerDirector, and DaVinci Resolve which can be downloaded for free.

You might be interested in my related article How to Take Impossible Shots with Your 360 Camera , which delves into postproduction and choosing your point of view after taking the shot.

Don’t rely on the audio from your camera

Unless you are a pro film maker with the right microphone you will usually get poor audio quality – especially straight out of the camera.  There will be distracting rubbing and creaking sounds, wind noises, and barely audible voices that would just add stress and strain for your audience.  The last thing you want to do during a presentation is to make people want to get the hell out of there!  Irritating noise can do that, so do your best to avoid it!

I usually mute the audio track and speak to the audience during playback or add some appropriate background music.

If you need the audio, for an interview for example, use an external microphone during filming or put a “dead cat” or “wind muff” on your camera mic.  These awesome hairy little beasts help by blocking the wind and reducing wind noise.

Don’t Try to Embed 360 Videos into PowerPoint

You can embed a 360 video into your powerpoint, but it won’t look right. .

At the time of writing, PowerPoint doesn’t have the capability to view and spin a 360 video during a slideshow.  PowerPoint will run the video OK, but it will be shown in equirectangular format that spreads the entire 360 flat on the screen – as shown below.

Trust me, audiences would get tired of looking at a video like this for more than a few seconds.

presentation on 360

The best way to play a 360 in front of an audience is to link to an external file and play the video outside of PowerPoint – which brings me to my next tip!

Link to an external 360 file and play outside of PowerPoint

This is the best way to play a 360 video during a powerpoint presentation in front of a live audience. .

Here’s a quick and easy shortcut explanation on how to accomplish this:

  • Insert a shape anywhere on your PowerPoint slide – like this triangle

presentation on 360

  • Select the shape
  • Go to Insert and choose Action
  • In Action Settings , choose Hyperlink to: Other File

presentation on 360

  • Insert the path to your file and click OK
  • During your presentation, when you arrive at the right slide, click on the shape to launch the video in the default video player.
  • After the video is finished, exit the player and return to PowerPoint .

The main thing that I don’t like about this approach is the security warning that flashes up when you click on the shape to launch the video.

(If you ever discover a way to disable this security warning in PowerPoint, please let me know and I will make certain to include the solution!)

presentation on 360

The frustrating thing is that you can’t turn this off – believe me, I’ve tried everything including editing the registry.  Microsoft absolutely refuses to offer a way to disable this pop-up warning and it appears just when you are trying to impress your audience!

Even so, I still use this method for my presentations, because it is the quickest and most fool proof way that I know of for switching to an external video.  Alternatively, you could have the video already sitting in a separate window ready to play, but I hate fiddling with tabs and looking for the right window in front of an audience.  Doesn’t look very professional.

When you play a 360 video, you can spin and move the image as the video plays.  On my touchscreen laptop I can move the image with my finger which is much more intuitive than trying to use a mouse or keyboard in the dark!

Watch me use this approach for the first time in front of a live audience of about 300 people. I was glad it worked!

Fly around inside a 360 Panorama or Photosphere

Go from a static image to a dynamic video.

Here’s a good way to maximize the benefits of using a 360 still photo.

Motion captures people’s attention, so rather than showing a static image in PowerPoint, I like to create videos that make it feel like I’m flying around inside a 360 sphere.  You can easily go from showing a single image to creating a much more dynamic video sequence.

Example: Video created from a single 360 photo

One benefit of this approach is that you choose your point-of-view during the editing process before rendering the final version.  This gives you total control of the final output.

Imagine one character giving you the finger.  It can be a kind finger or a very rude finger.  Depending on the intent of your video, you can choose to omit the finger, or you can make it a focal point.  But at least you have a choice without creating a weird gap or jump cut.

You could even show different points-of-view using one piece of 360 footage, with each sequence focusing on a different character or object.  To continue with my finger example, you could show both the person giving the finger AND another person’s facial expression in response.

Go from 3D to 2D and Embed Your Video Directly in PowerPoint

Rather than showing a 360 video outside of powerpoint as i’ve discussed, you can use this approach to play a regular video within powerpoint. .

Continuing from the previous tip, once you have a regular 2D edited video version you can embed this directly into your slideshow.

This is relatively straightforward, and just means that you insert video as you would normally.  With my own high-resolution videos I prefer to set the Playback to Full Screen for maximum impact.

presentation on 360

Provide Live Commentary while playing your video

You can inject some personality into your presentation by providing live commentary as the video plays.  This is a good time to relate a story or add some humor, depending on the point you are trying to make.  It depends on the audio track, of course.  It would be confusing trying to talk over a taped conversation, for example.  Or to try and yell over loud background music.

Another approach would be to record your commentary beforehand, but in my experience this doesn’t sound as authentic.  If you can be loose and natural in your commentary, then go ahead.  But if you have to read from a prepared script, I think you would be better to go live during the presentation.  Of course, this wouldn’t be the best time to deliver a series of dates or dry statistics!

With proper planning, a short video with live commentary can make a big impression with audiences.

Intrigue Audiences by Adding Text to Your 360 Videos

The technical aspects are beyond the scope of this article, but if you have the editing know-how you can add titles and credits to your 360 videos.  You could even make it more intriguing by posing questions in various spots as the video plays.  This could spur audience participation, for example, if that was one of your goals.

presentation on 360

Fly Into Your Photosphere Using Google Maps

One good way of adding context to your presentation is to fly into an image or location using Google Maps or Google Earth.  This could be particularly effective if you have already posted 360 images or videos to your Google Maps account.

I highly recommend posting images to Google Maps – you could get millions of views! At the time of writing this, I have over 85 million views of my images on Google Maps. See my article: Get 1 Million Views of Your Photos with Little Effort and Big Results

You will have to become adept at using the right software for doing a screen capture.  Or my preferred solution is to use Google Earth to create a tour and then to save it as a video.

Check out my related article on using Google Earth to provide geographic context, compelling visuals, and some stunning images: How to Use Google Earth to Enhance Your Presentations

Visit a tiny planet to create some excitement.

You have probably seen tiny planets and might wonder how in the heck do they get that effect.  With 360 photos and videos it is relatively easy to create a tiny planet perspective.  A tiny planet looks like what you would expect; a tiny planet complete with buildings, people, trees, or other objects covering the surface and extending outwards.

Here’s an example:

presentation on 360

One interesting aspect with 360 videos is that you can change perspectives as the video is playing, from wide-angle, to fisheye… to tiny planet, and back again.

This is accomplished with suitable video editing software and can be worth exploring if you want to feature something quite unusual that will really grab your audience’s attention.

Good luck experimenting with 360 photos and videos to enhance your own presentations!

The Gear We Love to Travel With

We love to travel in search of exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities and for life-enhancing cultural experiences..

Here is the gear we love to travel with for recording our adventures in safety and comfort:

  • Action Camera: GoPro Hero10 Black – we find these waterproof cameras are invaluable for capturing the essence of our adventures in video format. Still photos are great, but video sequences with all the sights and sounds add an extra dimension. I use short video clips to spice up many of my audiovisual presentations .
  • Long Zoom Camera: Panasonic LUMIX FZ300 Long Zoom Digital Camera – I love this camera for its versatility. It goes from wide angle to 28X optical in a relatively compact design. On safari in Africa I’ve managed to get good shots of lions that the folks with long lenses kept missing – because the lions were too close! I also like the 120 fps slow-motion for action shots of birds flying and animals on the move. I call this my “bird camera.”
  • 360 Camera:  Insta360 X3 360 Degree Camera with Stabilization – see my article  How to Take Impossible Shots with Your 360 Camera . This camera is literally like taking your own camera crew with you when you travel! Read my article and you’ll see why.

Prepare your presentation with Copilot for Microsoft 365

You’ve been asked to give a new presentation and Copilot for Microsoft 365 can help! For this example, we’ll imagine you’re a professional landscaper and you’ve been asked to present to a local community organization about tulips.

Start from an outline

Often the best way to prepare a new presentation is to create an outline of what you plan to cover. For our example we’ll start with Copilot in OneNote.

Start OneNote.

Navigate to the section where you want your presentation outline to live.

Create a new page for your presentation.

Start Copilot from the ribbon.

The Copilot pane will open on the right, waiting for your prompt. You can use natural language, and the more details you can give Copilot the better your results will be.

You could just enter:

Create an outline for a 45-minute presentation on tulips.

But you’ll get better results if you do a couple more things.

Give it context

Start by telling it what role you want Copilot to play in creating this content.

Act as a professional landscaper. Create an outline for a 45-minute presentation on tulips.

By setting that context first, you let the AI know how you want the content framed.

Give it more details

Try adding to your prompt details about what you want it to cover, and who the audience is.

Act as a professional landscaper speaking to a group of interested community members. Create an outline for a 45-minute presentation on tulips. Include sections on the history of the flower, different types, best time to plant, care and feeding.

Now when you run the prompt, you’ll get a more detailed response.

Tip:  Don’t be afraid to play around with the specifics – add or remove details, change the order, try different contexts.

If you’re happy (or mostly happy) with the draft outline Copilot has created, select the copy button in the Copilot pane and paste the outline onto your OneNote page.

Review and edit

Now you’ll want to add your own touches. Go through the outline and add or remove things as you see fit.

Tip:  OneNote excels as a research tool. Don’t be afraid to add your own notes, copy in content from websites, or add other supporting materials to the page that will be helpful as you prepare your presentation.

Create your handout

When you’re happy with your outline it’s time to create some handouts for the audience. Select your outline in OneNote and copy it to the clipboard. Then open Microsoft Word to a new, blank, document.

Screenshot shows Draft with Copilot in Word.

When Word opens the Copilot dialog should appear. Let’s give it a prompt:

Act as a professional landscaper creating an article for an audience of interested community members. Make it clear, simple, and engaging. Base it off this outline: <paste outline from OneNote>.

Copilot will draft an article for you based on your presentation outline.

Save to OneDrive

Before you spend much time editing your handout, save it to OneDrive. This will make sure your work is saved as you go and it’s key to our final step in preparing the presentation.

Go through the article and make sure that what Copilot added is what you wanted. Edit for voice and tone and make sure any facts it’s added are accurate. Remove anything you don’t want and add anything it missed.

Tip:  You can ask Copilot to add more content if you like. Place the cursor where you want that content to be, then click the Copilot button on the ribbon. Tell it what you want. Add two paragraphs about other plants that look good with tulips.

Go to the Insert tab, select Pictures , and then Online Pictures . Search for “Tulips” and select one or more nice images to make your article more appealing.

Create the slide deck

Now it’s time to let Copilot in PowerPoint get to work.

Open PowerPoint to a new blank deck.

Select Copilot from the ribbon.

In the prompt box type Create presentation from  file.

Copy Link button in Word share tray

Copilot in PowerPoint will build a draft presentation based on your Word document, complete with images and speaker notes.

As always, it’s important that you review the draft Copilot has created. Add any additional slides or information you want, remove any that you don’t.  Add your own expertise where appropriate.

If you want to change any of the images Copilot has added just right-click the image and select Change picture .

Tip:  Practice with Speaker Coach When you’re happy with the presentation you might want to practice it once or twice with Speaker Coach before the big day. For more information see  Rehearse your slide show with Speaker Coach.

Give it a try!

Next time you have a presentation to create let Copilot for Microsoft 365 help you at each step of the way.

Use the Ribbon

Use the search bar to accomplish tasks quickly, get a jump-start on your presentations, try smart lookup for online research, tap designer for slide design ideas, add new types of charts, morph from one slide to the next.

  • Collaborate in real time
  • Use AutoSave as a safety net while you work
  • Review or restore earlier versions of a presentation

Need to create and share a presentation? If so, you probably turn to the most popular presentation application in the world, Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows.

Microsoft sells Office under two models: Individuals and businesses can pay for the software license up front and own it forever (what the company calls the “perpetual” version of the suite), or they can purchase a Microsoft 365 or Office 365 subscription, which means they have access to the software for only as long as they keep paying the subscription fee.

When you purchase a perpetual version of the suite — say, Office 2019 or Office 2021 — its applications will never get new features, whereas apps in the “365” subscriptions are continually updated with new features. For more details, see “Microsoft Office 2021 vs. Microsoft 365: How to choose ” Confusing matters even more, Microsoft has renamed most, but not all, of its Office 365 subscriptions under the “Microsoft 365” moniker, which generally means the plan includes everything from the old Office 365 plans plus some additional features and apps.

This cheat sheet gets you up to speed on the features that have been introduced in the Windows desktop client for PowerPoint in Office 365 and Microsoft 365 since 2015. We’ll periodically update this story as new features roll out. (If you’re using the perpetual-license PowerPoint 2016 or 2019, see our separate PowerPoint 2016 and 2019 cheat sheet .)

The Ribbon interface that you came to know and love (or perhaps hate) in earlier versions of PowerPoint hasn’t changed much in Microsoft 365/Office 365. Because the Ribbon has been included in Office suite applications since Office 2007, we assume you’re familiar with how it works. If you need a refresher, see our PowerPoint 2010 cheat sheet.

Over the years, Microsoft has tweaked the way the Ribbon looks several times, including a recent facelift that aligns with the look of Windows 11. It has a flattened look that’s cleaner and less cluttered than in previous versions of PowerPoint, and its high-contrast colors make the icons and text easier to see. But it still works in the same way, and you’ll find most of the commands in the same locations as in earlier versions.

The Ribbon in PowerPoint for Microsoft 365/Office 365 has been cleaned up, with text and icons that are easier to see. (Click image to enlarge it.)

To find out which commands live on which tabs on the Ribbon, download our PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 Ribbon quick reference. Also note that you can use the search bar on the Ribbon to find commands.

As in previous versions of PowerPoint, if you want the Ribbon commands to go away, press Ctrl-F1. (Note that the tabs above the Ribbon — File, Home, Insert, and so on — stay visible.) To make them appear again, press Ctrl-F1. You can also make the commands on the Ribbon go away by clicking the name of the tab you’re currently on. To make the commands reappear, click any tab.

You’ve got other options for displaying the Ribbon as well. To get to them, click the down arrow at the bottom right of the Ribbon. A drop-down menu appears with these four options:

  • Full-screen mode: This maximizes the content portion of PowerPoint, which now takes up the entire screen, eliminating the entire Ribbon as well as the Quick Access toolbar. To show the Ribbon again, click at the top of PowerPoint.
  • Show tabs only: This shows the tabs but hides the commands underneath them. It’s the same as pressing Ctrl-F1. To display the commands underneath the tabs when they’re hidden, press Ctrl-F1 or click a tab.
  • Always show Ribbon: Selecting this shows both the tabs and the commands.
  • Hide/Show Quick Access toolbar: This hides or shows the Quick Access toolbar, which gives you fast access to PowerPoint features you want to have always available, such as New, Undo, Repeat, and so on. It can appear above or below the Ribbon. To customize the toolbar, click the small down arrow at its right, and from the drop-down menu that appears, choose which features to put on it. If you don’t see a command you want, click More Commands , find the command you want on the left, and click Add .

To customize the title bar above the Ribbon, select File > Options > General . In the “Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office” section, click the down arrow next to Office Theme and select Dark Gray , Black , or White from the drop-down menu. To make the title bar red again, instead choose the Colorful option from the drop-down list. Just above the Office Theme menu is an Office Background drop-down menu — here you can choose to display a pattern such as a circuit board in the title bar.

When you click the File tab on the Ribbon, you get sent to a useful area that Microsoft calls backstage. If you click Open , Save a Copy , or Save As from the menu on the left, you can see the cloud-based services you’ve connected to your Office account, such as SharePoint and OneDrive. Each location now displays its associated email address underneath it. This is quite helpful if you use a cloud service with more than one account, such as if you have one OneDrive account for personal use and another one for business. You’ll be able to see at a glance which is which.

The backstage area (under the File tab) shows which cloud-based services you’ve connected to your Office account and lets you connect to additional ones. (Click image to enlarge it.)

You can also easily add new cloud-based services. From the screen that shows you your online locations, click Add a Place and choose which service to add. Note, though, that you’re limited to SharePoint and OneDrive.

Possibly in the works: A simplified Ribbon

Microsoft has been working for some time on a simplified version of the Ribbon for all Office applications. Like the existing Ribbon, it will have tabs across the top, and each tab will have commands on it. But it’s more streamlined and uses less space than the existing Ribbon.

For now, only Outlook for Windows is the only Microsoft 365 desktop app that uses the simplified Ribbon. However, you can get a preview of what it will look like in PowerPoint by going to the online version of PowerPoint. Click the down arrow at the bottom right of the Ribbon and choose Single Line Ribbon . To revert to the regular Ribbon, choose Classic Ribbon .

A cleaner, simpler Ribbon will be available in PowerPoint at some point. To try it now, head to the online version of PowerPoint, pictured here. (Click image to enlarge it.)

In the simplified Ribbon, all the commands are still there for each tab, but only the most commonly used are visible. Click the three-dot icon at the far right end of the Ribbon to show the rest of the commands in a drop-down menu.

All that said, the simplified version of the Ribbon has been in the works for years and still hasn’t made an appearance in the desktop app. We’re eagerly awaiting its appearance but are beginning to lose faith that it will ever arrive.

PowerPoint is so chock-full of powerful features that it can be tough to remember where to find them all. Microsoft 365/Office 365 has made it easier via the Search bar, which can put even buried tools or those you rarely use in easy reach. (Note that at one point, the feature was called Tell Me.)

To use it, click in the Search bar — it’s above the Ribbon in the title area. (Keyboard fans can instead press Alt-Q to go to the Search box.) Type in a task you want to do, such as change handout orientation . You’ll get a menu showing potential matches for the task.

In this instance, the top result is a Handout Orientation listing that when clicked gives you two options — one to set the orientation to horizontal and the other to vertical. Just click the one you want to use. If you’d like more information about your task, the last items that appear in the menu let you select from related Help topics or display additional search results.

The Search bar gives advice on changing the handout orientation (or any other task you query). (Click image to enlarge it.)

Even if you consider yourself a PowerPoint pro, give Search a try. It’ll save you lots of time and is much more efficient than hunting through the Ribbon to find a command. It also remembers the features you’ve previously clicked on in the box, so when you click in it, you first see a list of previous tasks you’ve searched for. That makes sure that tasks that you frequently perform are always within easy reach, while at the same time making tasks you rarely do easily accessible.

Search is gaining more capabilities, too. Some users of enterprise and education editions of the subscription version of Office are now able to use the Search box to find people in their organization, SharePoint resources, and other personalized results from within PowerPoint. (These features are being rolled out in stages, so you might not have them yet.)

QuickStarter is a great tool for anyone who hates being confronted with a blank slate when starting a presentation. It jump-starts your presentation by helping you with research and outline creation.

To use it, when you create a new presentation, select QuickStarter, type in the topic of your presentation, and then choose from a list of subtopics. QuickStarter suggests a set of slides you might want to use, based on Bing searches and information from Wikipedia. Choose which slide(s) to keep, and then select a look for your slides, including a theme complete with background graphics. You’ve now got a good start on your presentation.

QuickStarter recommends slides you might want to use for your presentation, based on Bing searches and information from Wikipedia. (Click image to enlarge it.)

When Microsoft releases its AI assistant Microsoft 365 Copilot this fall, you may get a far more powerful tool than QuickStarter to help create presentations. Microsoft claims that Copilot will be able create entire presentations from scratch, using your existing documents. It says you’ll be able to “create beautiful presentations with a simple prompt, adding relevant content from a document you made last week or last year.”

If you do research to gather information for presentations, you’ll want to check out another useful feature, Smart Lookup. It lets you do online research from right within PowerPoint while you’re working on a presentation, so there’s no need to fire up your browser, search the web, and then copy the information to your presentation.

To use Smart Lookup, right-click a word or group of words and select Search xxx (where xxx is the word or words you’ve highlighted) from the menu that appears. PowerPoint then uses Bing to do a web search on the word or phrase and displays definitions, any related Wikipedia entries, related media, and other results from the web in the pane that appears on the right.

You can do web research from right within PowerPoint. (Click image to enlarge it.)

Smart Lookup has been getting smarter over time. When the feature first launched, it wasn’t very good at finding specific, timely information such as the current inflation rate in the United States. It was much better at finding more general information, such as a biography of the artificial intelligence pioneer Arthur Samuel. But Microsoft has done a lot of work on it, and it now works well when finding granular information as well.

Keep in mind that in order to use Smart Lookup in PowerPoint or any other Microsoft 365/Office 365 app, you might first need to enable Microsoft’s intelligent services feature, which collects your search terms and some content from your presentations and other documents. (If you’re concerned about privacy, you’ll need to decide whether the privacy hit is worth the convenience of doing research from right within the app.) If you haven’t enabled it, you’ll see a screen when you click Smart Lookup asking you to turn it on. Once you do so, it will be turned on across all your Microsoft 365/Office 365 applications.

Also note that there’s a reasonably high likelihood that Smart Lookup (and all search functions in Office and Windows) will get a serious makeover when Microsoft 365 Copilot is released. Microsoft has indicated that Copilot’s features will generally live in the right pane of its apps and Windows itself. We’ll keep you updated when that happens and include all the details you need to know about how to use it.

PowerPoint’s Designer feature makes it easy to quickly create high-quality slides without you doing much work. When you insert an image into a slide, the Designer panel opens on the right side of the screen, offering you a choice of multiple layouts for the slide. Choose the layout you want and take it from there.

Microsoft claims the feature was built with the help of graphic designers and takes into account the content of the image. A Microsoft blog post about Designer claims that “if the visual contains a natural scene, Designer can zoom, crop and frame it. But if the image contains a chart, it focuses in on the relevant region to ensure the important data is highlighted.”

When you insert an image into a slide, the Designer panel offers suggestions for the best layouts to use. (Click image to enlarge it.)

To make sure your version of PowerPoint has enabled Designer, click File > Options , and at the bottom of the screen in the PowerPoint Designer section, click the box next to Automatically show me design ideas , then click OK .

In PowerPoint (as well as Excel and Word) for Microsoft 365/Office 365, you get eight new types of charts you can add to documents: Treemap, Sunburst, Waterfall, Histogram, Pareto, Box & Whisker, Funnel, and Map. Each provides a unique way to display data visually. See our Excel for Microsoft 365 cheat sheet for details about the new chart types, including what each one looks like and what type of data it’s best suited for.

To insert any of the new chart types (or any other chart) in a document, select Insert > Chart from the Ribbon or click the chart icon in the area that appears when you create a new slide — it’s in the box that also lets you add text, tables, graphics, and other content. Either way, you’ll be shown the full gallery of charts you can insert. Make a selection and click OK, and it appears in your document with placeholder data; at the same time a pop-up window appears that looks like a mini Excel spreadsheet. Enter or edit the data, or else click the Edit in Excel button to open it up in Excel and edit it there.

When you insert a chart, a window where you can edit the data pops up. (Click image to enlarge it.)

Note that the Pareto chart does not show up in the main list of chart types. To insert one, you’ll have to first select Histogram from the list of chart types, and at the top of the screen that appears, select the option to the right, Pareto .

This feature lets you show motion in transitions and inside slides, but without having to use the Animations tab. To use it, duplicate an existing slide: Select the slide, then, on the Home tab, click the down arrow next to New Slide and select Duplicate Selected Slides .

Then make changes to that duplicate, such as shrinking an element or elements in it, making them bigger, moving them to new locations, and/or rotating them. Now select Morph from the Transitions tab, and PowerPoint automatically creates an animated transition between the slides. Onscreen, they look like a single slide morphing.

Home Blog Business Using 360 Degree Feedback in Your Organization

Using 360 Degree Feedback in Your Organization

Using 360 Degree Feedback in Your Organization

Many organizations use 360 degree feedback to provide assessment for employees via multiple sources to analyze the knowledge, skill and behavior of employees. It is also known as multi-rater feedback, multi-source feedback, 360 Degree Review and multi-source assessment, since it is used frequently for assessing the performance of an employee and to determine his/her future prospects in the organization.

What is 360 Degree Feedback?

360 degree feedback is a measuring tool to gather feedback from different people for the objective assessment of an individual. The sources for 360 degree feedback include; colleagues, subordinates, supervisors, etc. There is also an element of self-assessment and in some cases, the source of feedback may also include external stakeholders such as customers, suppliers or other relevant stakeholders.

The feedback is gathered using a predefined appraisal form which is aimed at determining the performance of the employee against expected competencies. The mechanism helps organizations determine the performance of an employee, as well as to develop skills and behaviors which might help them improve.

When is 360 Degree Feedback Used?

360 degree feedback is commonly used for performance appraisals. Other uses of the tool include determining the pay and promotion prospects of an employee, as well as to determine the utility of employees in an organization. It goes without saying that employees who might be found less than adequate in their performance can easily face the ax for poor performance. This is why a 360 degree review is often unnerving for employees, even people from the senior management; since it can easily ruin their prospects or result in termination on the basis of poor performance.

360 Degree Feedback Advantages

Increases Accountability:  Regardless of the performance and ability of an employee, the need to be accountable, both in terms of performance and behavior towards other colleagues is important. The purpose of 360 degree feedback not only entails enhanced performance but also to help improve employee relationships at the workplace and to hold them accountable for bad behavior or recklessness. For example, aspects like bad behavior with subordinates, excessive use of company resources or limiting opportunities for people down the hierarchy are often commonly observed where there is an abuse of power by senior officials.  360 degree feedback

Can help bring such behavior to light and improve accountability; since there can be repercussions for an annual appraisal gone wrong.

Improves Performance:  A 360 degree evaluation can help employees improve their skills, relationship with peers, and to seek out improvements due to increased accountability, which can help them enhance performance.

Encourages Personal Development:  The 360 degree feedback tool ensures that employees can no longer continue working in isolation or get away with bad behavior with colleagues. The need to satisfy multiple stakeholders can help enhance performance and encourage personal development.

Improves Relationship between Colleagues:  It is inevitable that 360 degree feedback, if done correctly will lead to at least some improvement in relationships between colleagues. While this might not necessarily be due to the mere benevolence of individuals; a 360 degree evaluation can definitely make one think about how they will be evaluated by colleagues and help improve coordination and overall conduct.

Issues with 360 Degree Feedback

The Evaluation Mechanism can be Flawed:  A 360 degree feedback can be difficult to conduct properly. The indicators used can be flawed and the evaluation criteria can be marred by irrelevant aspects which might not even fit with the job description and organizational requirement. A 360 degree evaluation can require customization to cater to organizational needs and specific types of job types. The team at the helm of affairs might not be skilled enough to conduct the process effectively, rendering the 360 evaluation ineffective.

Time Consuming:  A 360 feedback can be time-consuming and can even be quite expensive. HR departments often don’t account for the cost of such an evaluation due to lost employee man-hours spent on the evaluation and the net result might even be zero gain in productivity for the organization. 360 degree feedback can be marred by tokenism and internal office politics, which can result in a mere waste of time and money.

Needs SMART Goals to be Effective:  To make 360 degree feedback effective, there should be SMART goals, i.e. goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. There can be a temptation of creating 360 degree feedback questionnaires which are not linked to SMART goals to get the process completed in haste. This can make the process futile.

Information Overload:  The available information after a 360 degree feedback can be overwhelming and difficult to analyze. It can also be hard to separate individual biases and vendettas of employees from facts to objectively assess an employee’s performance and conduct.

Automating 360 Degree Feedback

In order to make the 360 degree feedback process more robust there is always room for automation. Using customized applications information can be gathered quickly and easily using digital forms. Furthermore, it can also be easier to quantify the available information using online and offline applications. Even a small organization can use free tools such as Google Forms to create survey forms for this purpose. Similarly, large or medium size organizations can opt for getting a customized application designed or pick from a plethora of existing services.

The question regarding whether or not to automate the 360 degree review mechanism can be difficult to answer. While organizations can cut back on paper and manual processes; losing the human touch when gathering feedback can make the process too robotic to reflect the views and considerations of employees. Nonetheless, it can be difficult, not to mention too expensive to opt for a manual process for large organizations with hundreds or thousands of employees.

The decision of automating 360 degree feedback would largely depend upon the cost-effectiveness of the process for an organization. In most cases, at least some amount of human evaluation would be necessary to ensure the process is appropriately completed.

Final Words

360 degree feedback is by and large not a bad mechanism for gathering feedback and driving productivity within an organization. However, many organizations can end up simply following the bandwagon; making the process flawed and ineffective. One of the most important things needed to conduct a proper 360 review is to ensure that the individuals conducting it are competent enough to get the job done appropriately.

Furthermore, it can be argued that there will always be the threat of tokenism and internal politics within departments and employees which will have to be accounted for. This would be necessary to ensure that personal vendettas, politics and mere show of sincerity towards the process does not overcome the actual purpose of the process, i.e. to drive productivity and improvement at the organizational level, as well as the individual.

The Complete Guide to 360 Panoramas for Immersive Client Presentations

The Complete Guide to 360 Panoramas for Immersive Client Presentations - Image 1 of 4

  • Published on March 29, 2024

In the world of architecture and design, traditional methods of showcasing 3D designs via 2D floorplans, renders and video walkthroughs are standard practices. However, they lack one important thing: immersion. For clients, it is hard to visualize spaces by looking at 2D representations. This has led to a need to quickly create immersive environments that clients can understand better from existing 3D software like Enscape, V-Ray, Lumion or Twinmotion.

Using 360 panoramas, architects and designers can now bring existing designs into virtual reality (VR) within minutes. This article will serve as a guide on how to convert your 3D designs into lightweight web and VR experiences using 360 panoramas.

How to Create Panoramas?

Exporting 360 panoramas is a simple and direct process across all major 3D software like Lumion, Enscape, Twinmotion, Vray, and Unreal. These tools allow you to export panoramas directly to your desktop in JPG or PNG formats. Unlike standard renders, 360 panoramas provide a full, immersive view, offering a complete visual context of the design.

There are several 3D modeling software and rendering tools, whether they are standalone or plugins, that together are capable of creating high-quality photorealistic panoramas.

Here’s a snapshot of plugins and renders that are most commonly used with detailed tutorials on how to export 360 panoramas for VR experiences:

  • Enscape to VR
  • Lumion to VR
  • Twinmotion to VR
  • 3ds Max to VR

What Is the Correct Format for 360 Panoramas?

Choosing the right image format for 360 panoramas is important for ensuring a proper immersive experience. While different software provides different options for panorama formats, Sentio VR supports a wide range of image formats that are a good fit for VR experiences. For example, here are the major formats used for generating panorama-based experiences.

  • Spherical images with a 2:1 aspect ratio
  • 2. Stereo spherical images with a 4:1 aspect ratio
  • Cubemaps with a 6:1 aspect ratio
  • Stereo cubemaps with a 12:1 aspect ratio

Files should be in JPG, JPEG, or PNG formats.

The Complete Guide to 360 Panoramas for Immersive Client Presentations - Image 3 of 4

How to View 360 Panoramas on the Web?

One benefit of working with 360 panoramas is that they are very easy to share with clients. The output is a shareable link that you can view across all devices for reviews or even embed within your website. Since all clients and firms do not have VR headsets yet, this is a great way to showcase immersive presentations that go beyond traditional 2D drawings or renders.

Sharing a web link for immersive presentations is a simple 4 step process:

  • Export the panorama from your desired rendering softwares to your local PC
  • Drag-and-drop your 360 panoramas in Sentio VR
  • Edit your virtual tour and create a shareable URL
  • View in web from any anywhere on PC, mobile or tablets

How to View Panoramas in VR Headsets Like Meta Quest?

Experiencing high-quality 360 panoramas in a VR headset like Meta Quest 3 offers a completely immersive experience for clients, providing a spatial understanding that is hard to achieve in 2D. Customers can look around the entire space, switch images, and interact with floor plans, audio and video hotspots in order to provide accurate feedback early in the design review process, saving time and rework costs. To view your previously uploaded panoramas:

  • Install and download Sentio VR app for Meta Quest
  • Note down a 6 digit access code unique to your account
  • Select a 360 tour to experience in VR

Additionally, you can also invite other stakeholders to review in real-time for remote presentations or cast your VR view to a screen for in-person meetings. For meetings with unreliable internet, you can download the panoramas for offline viewing, ensuring a complete presentation platform that fits your firm's requirements.

In conclusion, elevating your presentation workflow to include 360 panoramas in addition to 2D images has huge benefits for improving client engagement and saving rework. By using a 360 virtual tour software like Sentio , you can easily create these presentations that can be shared on PC, mobile and tablets, while also bringing in fully immersive experiences using wireless VR headsets like Meta Quest. With advanced workflows like virtual tour editor, multi-user collaboration and offline viewing, it requires very little training to get started with incorporating VR into your design review and presentation workflow.

Learn how to make a slide show with PowerPoint

Discover how to make a slide show with photos, videos, music, and custom settings using a slide show app like PowerPoint.

What is a slide show maker?

To create a slide show, you’ll want to use a slide show maker—or slide show app—which is a software program or online service that enables you create digital slide shows with text, photos, videos, music, and other special effects. The full range of slide show features and functionality varies from program to program.

Once you’ve created a slide show, it can be published on the internet or shared with others as a video file. Additionally, you can use slide shows to create dynamic, interactive content on websites.

Slide show software can be used for a variety of purposes, such as creating presentations for work, school, and even your personal life. For instance, slide shows are often used to:

Enhance teaching, training, and public speaking

Slide shows can also provide helpful visuals in educational settings, classroom presentations, and public speaking forums.

What you need to make a slide show

When it comes to creating a slide show, there are a few things you'll need to get started. First and foremost, you'll need a device equipped with presentation software or access to an online slide show app. Secondly, you’ll need a way to display your slide show, which usually means connecting your device to a projector or big screen TV. Beyond that, you’ll need some visual aids and other media to bring your slide show to life.

Explore each of these slide show requirements in more detail:

Devices and equipment —To create a slide show, you’ll use a computer or other device—such as a tablet or mobile phone—with PowerPoint or a similar program installed. You will also need a way to project the slides onto a screen or wall. This can be done with a projector, but if you don't have one available, you can use your TV or computer monitor. Simply connect your device to the TV or monitor using an HDMI cable and select the correct input. Your slides will now be projected onto the screen.

Media —Of course, creating a slide show requires media that adds visual and even audio elements to your presentation. This can be anything from photos and videos to music and text. You can use search engines to find copyright-free media to use in your slide show.

Another option is to purchase royalty-free stock footage, images, and audio files from online media libraries. This could be a bit more expensive, but it guarantees that you have the legal right to use the media in your presentation.

Finally, you can also use your own videos, images, and even music. While this can be a time-consuming process, it does allow you to create custom content specifically for your slide show.

Slide show creator —To bring your slide show together, you’ll need a slide show creator. The slide show software you choose will depend on your presentation requirements and preferences. There are many slide show makers on the market, with Microsoft PowerPoint being one of the most popular and widely used programs globally.

How to choose a slide show maker

When choosing slide show software, it's important to consider the features and specifications that are most important to you. Some of the questions you might ask when choosing a slide show maker include:

  • How easy is the software to use?
  • Is the software Mac or PC compatible?
  • Can I access and edit my slide show on the cloud?
  • What kind of slide shows can be created with the software?
  • How many photos and/or videos can be included in a slide show?
  • Can text and other elements be added to slide shows?
  • Are transitions and effects available for slide shows?
  • Is music accompaniment an option?
  • What are the options for saving and sharing your slide show?

Building a slide show doesn't have to be difficult. With the right software, you can create an engaging presentation in no time.

Six steps for creating a slide show

presentation on 360

1. Plan your slide show

Before getting too deep into your slide show project, it’s a good idea to select and save the photos and videos you want to use. This helps you create a slide show more efficiently and purposefully, ensuring a better outcome.

presentation on 360

4. Import media

Start adding photos, videos, and other desired media to your slides. You can upload these from your device or online media libraries. If you planned your slide show in advance, you should have all your media saved in one place.

presentation on 360

2. Launch your slide show app

Once you’ve decided on a slide show maker, you’ll want to launch the app from whatever device you’ll be using to create your presentation.

3. Choose your theme

Most slide show software offers a variety of pre-set themes, colors, and designs. You can choose one that best suits your slide show or create a custom theme using the program’s various tools and features.

presentation on 360

6. Record, save, and share your slide show

Now you’re ready to record your slide show, which can include a voiceover or Cameo . Once your slide show is complete, you can save it as a video to your device or to the cloud, such as OneDrive . You can access your saved slide show at any time to display at events, use in meetings, share online, or send directly to other people.

How to make a slide show with photos

Adding photos to your slide show is a great way to enliven your presentation and make it more visually interesting. Here are a few different ways you can add photos to your slide show in PowerPoint.

A user adding photos to their PowerPoint presentation

Add photos from your device

Whether you’re using a computer, tablet, phone, or other device, you can use photos that are saved to your device to create your slide show. In PowerPoint, simply select “Insert” then “Pictures” from the program menu, then choose “This Device.” This will open your photo library and allow you to find the photos you want to use. Once you’ve selected the photos that you want to import, just click on the "Insert" button and they will be added to your slide show. If you’re using a pre-made theme, you can also right-click the image in the slide show and select “Change Picture.” Again, you will choose “This Device” to access your photo library. After inserting your photo, you can reposition it on your slide or resize it however you like.

Two people looking at a laptop and pointing at the screen

Use stock photos

Another way to add photos in PowerPoint is to follow the same process you would when adding photos from your device, but when prompted to choose your photo source, select “From Stock Images” instead of “This Device.” This will display a library of photos that you can use in your slide show without worrying about copyright infringement. There are thousands of stock images available in most slide show maker programs. Once the library is open, you can explore existing photo categories or use keywords to search for photos that fit your needs.

Two people in a conference room viewing a slideshow in PowerPoint on a large display

Explore online photo sources

Online photos are images you can insert into a PowerPoint slide show directly from the internet, as opposed to using those you have saved on your device. This is a convenient option if you don't have photos already prepared for your slide show, or if you can’t find the right kind of photo in the stock image library. However, there are some potential risks associated with using online photos, namely that you must be careful to use royalty-free images so not to infringe on any copyrights. In PowerPoint, there is a filtering option to ensure your search results only show royalty-free photos. Inserting photos from online sources follows the same process as the previous two methods, but this time, you’ll select “From Online Sources.”

How to add videos, music, and text

Two people in a meeting room viewing a PowerPoint presentation titled We Create Extra Ordinary Experiences.

How to add videos to PowerPoint slide shows

Adding videos to your slide show involves accessing videos from your device, a stock video library, or online video sources—just as you would when adding photos. In this case, however, you’ll navigate to the menu in PowerPoint and select “Insert,” followed by “Media,” then “Video.” Once your video appears on your slide, you can resize or reposition it to fit your presentation needs. You can also set your video to play automatically in the slide show by selecting “Playback” on the menu and choosing “Start Automatically.”

A person wearing headphones and using a laptop view a PowerPoint presentation

How to add music to PowerPoint slide shows

Much like adding videos, you can add music to individual slides in PowerPoint by navigating to “Insert” on the menu, then “Media,” and finally “Audio.” You can then import music from your device, or you can record your own audio directly in PowerPoint. However, if you want your audio to play across multiple slides in your presentation—for example, as background music for a slide show—you’ll have to take a couple of extra steps. Once you’ve imported your audio file, select “Playback” from the menu and choose the “Play in Background” option. Your music will now play across all slides. You can set one song to loop for the duration of the slide show, or you can add more songs to play continuously throughout the slide show.

A person using a pen and tablet to add text to a PowerPoint presentation being displayed on a desktop monitor

How to add text to PowerPoint slide shows

Premade themes in PowerPoint make adding text slide shows easy. On slides that already have templated content, you can simply click on the text and begin editing. In addition to changing what the text says, you can resize, recolor, reposition, and add special effects to the text. Of course, you can also change the font—or style—of the text. Most of this can be done from the “Home” tab on the menu while certain effects, such as shadows, can be found on the “Shape Format” tab. If you’re designing your presentation slides from scratch, or want to create additional text, find “Insert” on the menu, then choose “Text Box” or “Word Art,” depending on your desired text effect.

Discover custom slide show settings

Add even more effects to your PowerPoint slide show with custom settings like timing, transitions, and looping.

Four people in a meeting sitting around a circular table while a PowerPoint presentation is being given over a Teams call

Set slide show timing

Adding timing to your slide show is a great way to control the pacing and flow of your presentation. To add timing in PowerPoint, go to the "Transitions" tab on the menu and find the "Advance Slide" area. Make sure the box next to “After:” is checked, then input the amount of time you’d like each slide to appear on-screen. The slides will automatically advance, creating a movie-like effect that’s great for events and special occasions.

Three people in a conference room using tablets and laptops and a presentation is displayed on a large screen on the wall

Create slide show transitions

Now that you’ve added automatic timing to your slide show, you can make it more visually appealing by creating slide transitions. Transitions are special effects that allow you to animate the way your slides change from one to the next, and there are a variety of different transitions in PowerPoint that you can choose from. You can add these transitions to your slide show from the "Transitions” tab. From there, you’ll select the transition you want to add. To preview the transition, simply click on it. You can click “Apply To All” to automatically add the same transition to every slide in your slide show, or you can manually add different transitions to different slides.

A person standing over their desk and looking at a PowerPoint presentation being displayed on a desktop monitor

Loop your slide show

If you want your slide show to play continuously until you choose to turn it off, you can set your PowerPoint presentation to loop. This will ensure your slide show automatically starts over from the beginning once it reaches the end. To get started, navigate to the “Slide Show” tab on the menu and select “Set Up Slide Show.” When the settings window opens, check the box next to “Loop continuously until ‘ESC’” and then click “OK.” When you’re ready to turn your slide show off, simply press the Esc key on your keyboard.

Frequently asked questions

What are slide show apps and software.

Slide show apps and software are used to create and share slide shows. Slide show programs are typically used to communicate information, diagrams, plans, or processes. They can also be used to display photos and videos at events or retail stores. Usually, slide show makers have a range of built-in features and layouts, making them easy to use, regardless of technical skill levels.

What should a slide show include?

An effective slide show should be engaging, visually appealing, and informative. To achieve this, you'll want to make sure to include the following elements:

  • A catchy headline or title. This will help grab your audience's attention and set the tone for the rest of your presentation.
  • A variety of images. Don't just rely on text—incorporate photos, illustrations, or even video to maximize viewership.
  • Bullet points or short blocks of text. Keep your slide content concise and easy to digest; too much information will only overwhelm your viewers.

How do I make a picture slide show?

There are a few different ways to make picture slide shows. Some programs, such as Microsoft PowerPoint, can be accessed on your personal device and on the cloud.

How long should a slide show be?

The length of your slide show will depend on several factors, such as the topic of your presentation, the audience you're presenting to, and the amount of time you have. That said, slide shows are generally between five and ten minutes long.

How can I make a slide show better?

Here are a few tips to make your slide show more engaging:

  • Add images, videos, and music to bring your slide show to life.
  • Use a font that is easy to read from a distance.
  • Try not to use too many words on each slide.

AI presentation maker

When lack of inspiration or time constraints are something you’re worried about, it’s a good idea to seek help. Slidesgo comes to the rescue with its latest functionality—the AI presentation maker! With a few clicks, you’ll have wonderful slideshows that suit your own needs . And it’s totally free!

presentation on 360

Generate presentations in minutes

We humans make the world move, but we need to sleep, rest and so on. What if there were someone available 24/7 for you? It’s time to get out of your comfort zone and ask the AI presentation maker to give you a hand. The possibilities are endless : you choose the topic, the tone and the style, and the AI will do the rest. Now we’re talking!

Customize your AI-generated presentation online

Alright, your robotic pal has generated a presentation for you. But, for the time being, AIs can’t read minds, so it’s likely that you’ll want to modify the slides. Please do! We didn’t forget about those time constraints you’re facing, so thanks to the editing tools provided by one of our sister projects —shoutouts to Wepik — you can make changes on the fly without resorting to other programs or software. Add text, choose your own colors, rearrange elements, it’s up to you! Oh, and since we are a big family, you’ll be able to access many resources from big names, that is, Freepik and Flaticon . That means having a lot of images and icons at your disposal!

How does it work?

Think of your topic.

First things first, you’ll be talking about something in particular, right? A business meeting, a new medical breakthrough, the weather, your favorite songs, a basketball game, a pink elephant you saw last Sunday—you name it. Just type it out and let the AI know what the topic is.

Choose your preferred style and tone

They say that variety is the spice of life. That’s why we let you choose between different design styles, including doodle, simple, abstract, geometric, and elegant . What about the tone? Several of them: fun, creative, casual, professional, and formal. Each one will give you something unique, so which way of impressing your audience will it be this time? Mix and match!

Make any desired changes

You’ve got freshly generated slides. Oh, you wish they were in a different color? That text box would look better if it were placed on the right side? Run the online editor and use the tools to have the slides exactly your way.

Download the final result for free

Yes, just as envisioned those slides deserve to be on your storage device at once! You can export the presentation in .pdf format and download it for free . Can’t wait to show it to your best friend because you think they will love it? Generate a shareable link!

What is an AI-generated presentation?

It’s exactly “what it says on the cover”. AIs, or artificial intelligences, are in constant evolution, and they are now able to generate presentations in a short time, based on inputs from the user. This technology allows you to get a satisfactory presentation much faster by doing a big chunk of the work.

Can I customize the presentation generated by the AI?

Of course! That’s the point! Slidesgo is all for customization since day one, so you’ll be able to make any changes to presentations generated by the AI. We humans are irreplaceable, after all! Thanks to the online editor, you can do whatever modifications you may need, without having to install any software. Colors, text, images, icons, placement, the final decision concerning all of the elements is up to you.

Can I add my own images?

Absolutely. That’s a basic function, and we made sure to have it available. Would it make sense to have a portfolio template generated by an AI without a single picture of your own work? In any case, we also offer the possibility of asking the AI to generate images for you via prompts. Additionally, you can also check out the integrated gallery of images from Freepik and use them. If making an impression is your goal, you’ll have an easy time!

Is this new functionality free? As in “free of charge”? Do you mean it?

Yes, it is, and we mean it. We even asked our buddies at Wepik, who are the ones hosting this AI presentation maker, and they told us “yup, it’s on the house”.

Are there more presentation designs available?

From time to time, we’ll be adding more designs. The cool thing is that you’ll have at your disposal a lot of content from Freepik and Flaticon when using the AI presentation maker. Oh, and just as a reminder, if you feel like you want to do things yourself and don’t want to rely on an AI, you’re on Slidesgo, the leading website when it comes to presentation templates. We have thousands of them, and counting!.

How can I download my presentation?

The easiest way is to click on “Download” to get your presentation in .pdf format. But there are other options! You can click on “Present” to enter the presenter view and start presenting right away! There’s also the “Share” option, which gives you a shareable link. This way, any friend, relative, colleague—anyone, really—will be able to access your presentation in a moment.

Discover more content

This is just the beginning! Slidesgo has thousands of customizable templates for Google Slides and PowerPoint. Our designers have created them with much care and love, and the variety of topics, themes and styles is, how to put it, immense! We also have a blog, in which we post articles for those who want to find inspiration or need to learn a bit more about Google Slides or PowerPoint. Do you have kids?
