Respect for teachers key to growing the profession: Chan Chun Sing

SINGAPORE – Respect for teachers is crucial to attract and retain them, and grow the profession, and is more important than monetary factors and work environment, said Education Minister Chan Chun Sing. 

“The quality of the teaching force is the most important determinant of the outcomes of our education system,” Mr Chan said in his speech at the opening of the 14th International Summit on the Teaching Profession on April 22.

It is one of the fundamentals that should not change amid shifts in the education sector, he said, adding that students should also develop beyond academic foundations so that their diverse strengths will contribute to a society’s collective good.

Hosted by Singapore for the first time, the summit from April 22 to 24 has drawn 140 delegates from 18 countries, including education ministers.

During the summit at Raffles City Convention Centre, these leaders of global education systems will discuss the future of learning, the role of technology in education and training, and the importance of partnerships in supporting lifelong learning.

They will also visit Singapore’s primary and secondary schools, as well as institutes of higher learning and other training institutes.

Mr Chan said that education is at a turning point, citing how knowledge is becoming more commoditised.

Teaching should not just be about sharing information, but also focus on preparing students to anticipate challenges and create solutions, he added.

Other shifts in education include the introduction of artificial intelligence to meet diverse learner needs, and ensuring that foundational academic skills are complemented with skills and individual dispositions such as adaptability and curiosity, and the ability to learn in teams, he said. 

Societies and the global environment are also becoming more fragmented, Mr Chan noted, and it is important to nurture empathy, understanding, and the ability to build connections across diverse perspectives, so students can contribute positively to society.

“They must learn to create new value propositions, so that their company or country can continue to be competitive, as well as to shape a better world,” he said. 

This requires Singapore to go beyond the traditional metrics of success, where students should be encouraged to become creators to contribute to the collective good, and connectors to create a safe environment for ideas to thrive. 

Students should also be pushed to be lifelong learners and contributors, he added.

This is “where success is defined not by personal accomplishments alone but by their contributions to the collective; where respect for diverse strengths engenders a meritocracy that encourages all to pay it forward; and where every generation can aspire to be better than the one before”, Mr Chan said. 

For success to be achieved beyond conventional metrics, there is a greater need to understand more about how learners learn, he said, listing various approaches to support students to go beyond academic benchmarks. 

“We should use assessment mindfully to help our students discover their strengths and interests, and to identify the most appropriate setting for their next lap of education, and empower students to constantly surpass themselves throughout life, rather than strive to surpass others in a test.

“It is about doing our best, rather than beating the rest,” he said. 

Mr Chan added that a strong socio-emotional foundation and stable family environment are also key factors, as well as building a lifelong learning ecosystem that cultivates individual skills beyond individual desires, but curated for the needs of the future. 

The summit, held every year since 2011, brings together education ministers, union leaders and teacher leaders worldwide to review how to improve the quality of teachers, teaching, and learning. 

In 2023, Mr Chan attended the summit’s 13th edition in Washington from April 25 to 27.

Also speaking during the opening of the summit were Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development deputy secretary-general Yoshiki Takeuchi and Education International president Susan Hopgood.

Both speakers touched on topics such as the well-being of teachers, navigating technology in education, and nurturing the skills in students for continuous learning.

Mr Takeuchi said: “As policymakers and educators, our responsibility is to prepare future generations to navigate the challenges of the future.”

What You Can Do with Just Five Minutes

Classroom management can be a struggle for teachers. Not just for new teachers, but veteran teachers may also face challenges with managing their classrooms as well. One major portion of managing a classroom is student discipline. When I talk to teachers about their classroom management, the conversation of dealing with student behavior typically comes up.

The reality is students respect teachers who they feel respect them. The more students respect you and believe that you have their best interest at heart, the easier it is to facilitate a culturally sustaining learning environment.

I have had conversations with teachers who are frustrated that their students do not respect them. They start with blaming students with comments like, “Kids these days are so disrespectful” or “My students come to class just to play and need to learn how to listen to instructions.” My question is always, “What have you done to earn your students’ trust and respect?”

If we haven’t done the work to build relationships with our students, we might find it difficult to manage our class.

Building relationships with students takes time. One way to develop relationships with students is by finding time within the classroom to make personal connections with them. I know that this is easier said than done in many cases as the minutes in a class period are so crucial in the learning process. I’m going to provide you with four ways you can use five minutes of class time to help you get to know your students.

Incorporate circles in your classroom—This activity may be a little hard to do within five minutes; however, it is a great way to develop a community within your classroom. It is something that I do at my school and it has really helped with community building in our resource room.

Schedule time for one-on-one engagement—As you begin to get to know your students, you will learn their normal behavior, and if something seems a little off, use those five minutes to see if they will open up to you by letting them know that you care. Then you can offer things like, “Let’s talk more during lunch or after school.” Gestures like these help to develop relationships.

Find out what makes your students unique—You will quickly learn that your classroom is filled with various personalities all meshed into one class. Learning about the different personalities represented in your room will help you gain a better understanding of how students will interact with each other. Understanding personalities will help you when planning group assignments, de-escalating conflicts, and helping students with personal challenges.

• Make time to show students that you care about what is happening in their lives—I really want to highlight that this doesn’t pertain to just students who appear to be having a bad day. I am also talking about students who appear to be having a good day and those in between.

Don’t give up on any of your students. Get to know them as human beings, as individuals and not just another student. You might find yourself intrigued with all the amazing thoughts and talents that your students have. You may also notice a change in your classroom atmosphere as less instances of student behavior occurs.

(ASCD), Inviting Students to Learn: 100 Tips for Talking Effectively with Your Students (ASCD), and Research on Habits of Mind (2014, Institute for Habits of Mind International):

My best tips for managing the classroom come from Michael Grinder (2019). He developed nonverbal methods for managing the classroom. Some of his techniques appear below.

Grinder (2019) recommends that teachers stand in the same place in the classroom, preferably in the front of the room, to get students’ attention. Students will know that when we are there, we will be asking for their attention. They will tend to get quiet as we are moving into place and they are anticipating that we will be calling them together. Grinder recommends asking for their attention when their voices are going down so that they will be more likely to turn and look at us.

As the students’ voices go down, we can raise our hand (B. Garmston, personal communication, June 5, 1997). They know this is the signal for them to also raise their hand, complete their sentence (not their paragraph), and turn toward the teacher. According to Garmston, it is a respectful way to ask for attention.

Grinder (2019) also talks about modulating students’ metabolism. When we are excitable and talking in a loud voice, our students will do the same. According to Grinder, we are raising their metabolism. On the other hand, when we slow our voice down and talk quietly, we can lower their metabolism. I learned this lesson when I was supervising an intern who was teaching 3rd grade. She moved around the room slowly and spoke in a quiet voice. I tend to move more quickly, so I started moving slowly and speaking softly when I entered her room. The change was almost magical.

Grinder (2019) identified two types of voices: the approachable voice and the credible voice. When we use the credible voice, our chin goes up and down, and our palms tend to be up. We bob our head. This is the friendly voice. Teachers of younger students will naturally use more approachable voices than teachers of older students.

When we use the credible voice, the chin stays flat and goes down at the end of what we are saying, and palms are facing down (Grinder, 2019). This is the voice of authority, and our students know we mean what we say. They also know we know what we are talking about.

According to Grinder (personal communication, Sept. 8, 1995), it is important for us to be breathing when we use these voices. If we are upset or holding our breath, the approachable voice can come across as whining. We can come across as being angry when we use the credible if we are holding our breath.

If we can get our students’ attention by using the approachable voice, it is great (Grinder, 2019). We may be able to get their attention with an approachable voice in the morning, while we may need to use the credible voice later in the day. The day before a holiday, we definitely need to use a credible voice.

Grinder (2019) recommended that teachers “go visual.” This means that when we give instructions, we always have them written so that if students have questions, they can look at the board, on the PowerPoint, on the chart paper, or on a piece of paper we give them. He recommended that teachers look at the visual while giving instructions so that students will look there, as well. When a student has a question about the assignment, we can point to the written instructions and look at it. This also helps students to become more independent.

Each classroom has its own identity and culture, one that is developed throughout the year by the teacher and students. These are a few ways to help create an environment where all learners can thrive.

Be clear and consistent

Our brains can only process a certain amount of new content at any one time. During class, we want our students focusing as much on learning new content as possible. We want the flow and function of the classroom to become “muscle memory,” so that students don’t even need to think about what is expected of them and how to behave. To accomplish this, we must set clear expectations so that the rules and procedures fade into the background and become a routine part of engaging in learning.

General best practice recommends three to six classroom rules or procedures, framed in positive language (e.g., “Treat our room with respect” rather than “Don’t be disruptive”). Students should have these rules and procedures available to them visibly at all times. They should also know that your procedures will be implemented all day, every day. Spending time at the beginning of the year teaching, modeling, and practicing examples and nonexamples will help set and maintain behavioral habits throughout the year.

Make every minute matter

A healthy learning environment is often a busy, bustling place, with students moving from one activity to the next. Each time there is a transition between activities, students need to be ready to transition so that they can move from one activity to the next in under a minute. It can be done! Start the school year by practicing transition routines, such as moving from one location to the next in the classroom, handing in papers, or getting materials. Make it a game for students to see how quickly they can complete the transition. Have a visible timer and set the goal for a one-minute (or 30-second!) transition. Some educators find it helpful to use energetic music to get the students moving with efficiency. Flight of the Bumblebee is a popular choice.

Praise the positive

When students are given a task to accomplish, rather than calling out students who are not following procedures, flip your focus and instead verbally recognize students who are correctly following instructions. “I like the way Zane is getting out his book without talking,” or “Shanice is doing an excellent job putting away her writing materials” accomplishes two goals at once: It gives praise to students who are following instructions AND it is a small verbal cue for others to follow suit.

Use nonverbal communication (silent signals)

Teachers are fantastic at multitasking! We have to keep our eye on 25 or more wiggly students at any given time, while still keeping our feet moving in teaching our lessons. To increase the efficiency of your multitasking, incorporate the use of nonverbal communication, both from you and from your students. For students who are struggling to follow instructions, sometimes merely standing next to them or placing a hand on their desk is enough to redirect behavior. A quick nod or shake of the head accompanied by direct eye contact with the student is another way to communicate quickly and effectively. You and your students can also create a system of nonverbal hand signals--asking to go to the bathroom, for a pencil, a tissue, or even signals to thank or show gratitude.

Check for understanding

After giving a set of instructions, it’s a good idea to check to ensure that students correctly heard and understood what is expected. Begin your instructions by letting students know you’re about to explain a process, then will have them repeat it back to you. Share the steps of your process, then call on a student to repeat the expectations and instructions. Ask others in the class to agree or add to what they heard. If students can’t correctly repeat what’s expected of them, it’s time to go back and explain in a different way.

Structure classroom discussions

A trusting, respectful classroom is a two-way street. Set aside time at the end of a week, or twice a month, to gather feedback from students. What’s working for them in the classroom? What areas could be improved? Allow students to self-reflect and evaluate where they can strengthen their participation, then talk about what structures and procedures will best support that effort. For classrooms new to this experience, you may wish to have students complete an independent survey first, to build a sense of safety and security that their answers will be respected and appreciated.

A recent Primary Source (2012) survey indicated that 62 percent of teachers said behaviors are interfering with their ability to teach. Wow! That number clearly shows that we are in need of new ways to help support student engagement and overall behavior. When we hear “classroom management,” we often think the educators are the managers. Teachers and related service providers find new techniques and ideas to help kids stay on task. This often involves whole-class behavior-modification programs and different reinforcers to support positive behaviors. For some students, this may mean individualized behavior plans and programs which need to be managed throughout the day. As we know, these often get stale so a great deal of time is given to changing and updating our various modification programs so kids don’t get bored with them. But is this really the best way?

We like to look at the whole concept of classroom behavior from a slightly different vantage point. To do this, we need to change the way we look at behavior in our students. Let’s make the students the classroom managers and teach them how to manage their own behaviors. Here is a three-step plan to student-driven classroom management.

―Teach students about their emotions. When you can’t identify, understand, or manage your own emotions, you are unable to manage your behavior. We make the assumption that students know their emotions. Many don’t or have a limited understanding of them. Explicitly teaching different emotions and giving them context helps kids not only understand how they feel but why.

―Once kids have identified how they feel, they are able to look at how that emotion connects to how they behave. Emotions aren’t always connected to negative behaviors. A student who is excited and unable to focus on a math worksheet can be helped to understand that the feeling of emotion is driving the off-task behavior.

• Teach Strategies (replacement behaviors) to Manage Emotions ―Once students understand the connection between emotions and behaviors, we can begin to teach them to use different behaviors to manage the emotions that they feel. An anxious student can be taught to get a drink of water instead of wandering around the classroom or climbing under their desk. A frustrated student can be taught to do three jumping jacks when faced with a difficult math problem instead of crumpling her paper and refusing to work.

Using this process, we aren’t teaching kids to manage their behaviors―we are teaching them how to regulate their emotions. In turn, we are giving them the tools to manage themselves in the classroom. That’s classroom management for real. What? You’re suggesting this will take too much time to teach and there is so much else on the plate of our teachers that this isn’t possible? With these strategies, it can be done efficiently, and its importance is undeniable: 62 percent of teachers are saying that behavior is interfering with their ability to teach.

We are already spending time managing behavior, and it isn’t really helping with classroom management. There is a positive impact on everyone w hen we help kids to help themselves . Student-led classroom management takes the same amount of time as a whole-class-management system initially, and then actually takes less time as students learn to manage themselves. It’s time to put the keys to management in the hands of our students.

When we think about classroom-management tips, we often think about the role of transitions. Most teachers name transitions as the most challenging part of the day. There are countless transitions across a typical school day, particularly in the early grades, and smoothly navigating transitions is an essential part of effective classroom management.

Teachers and children both play a role in classroom management. Effective teachers help children regulate their behavior by preparing children for transitions and orienting them to where they are going (“Remember when we talked about ...? We’re going to do an activity about... next.”).

For children, an important developmental task is practicing self-regulation so they can effectively manage their emotions and behaviors. Children with strong self-regulation are more successful in school compared with peers who struggle with these skills. Strong self-regulation relates to positive outcomes like better academic achievement, college completion, and stable employment.

There are many ways that educators help children practice these skills while also helping their classrooms run more smoothly. Here are a few of our favorite classroom-management strategies:

Children thrive on routine, and having a consistent pattern from one day to the next helps children know what is coming, supporting their ability to self-regulate. As you plan your schedule, carefully choose activities that match children’s energy levels at different times of day.

Post your classroom schedule where children can see it (include pictures for younger children). Refer to the schedule regularly. In addition, use oral and visual cues to let children know that a transition is coming and explain what is coming next. Dim the lights and turn on soft music before a quiet activity. Turn up the lights and get children moving before outdoor time to help them use their energy outdoors.

Be sure to explain to children what to do (not just what not to do) so that they learn the rules of the classroom and why these rules are important. Place pictures and descriptions around the classroom to help children self-regulate and to remind them of classroom rules and guidelines. Make sure children can reach supplies that they need and keep supplies that they should not have out of reach (e.g., teacher scissors).

Traditional classroom games, such as the Freeze Game (dancing when music plays and freezing when it stops), can be made more complex with a simple twist—dance quickly to fast music, slowly to slow music, and then try doing the opposite! Teach children songs or games that they can sing and play while transitioning or waiting.

Children and adults alike have different emotions throughout the day. These feelings can help children feel safe, supported, and ready to learn or make it hard to focus. Check in with your class as well as with individual children. Ask children how they are feeling, help them name their emotions, and brainstorm strategies to manage different feelings (e.g., “What could you do to help a friend who is feeling sad?”).

Self-regulation is a set of skills that needs to be practiced. If children have a breakdown in self-regulation, talk about it outside of emotionally charged moments (e.g., “It seems like you had a hard time when we had to put materials away. What could we do differently next time that would be helpful?”). Foster supportive relationships by helping children view one another as learners (e.g., “I didn’t like that he pushed you, either. It’s not OK to do that. He is still learning, just like we all are.”).

• Model your own self-regulation skills. Look for ways that you can model self-regulation throughout the day. As you do, explain what you are doing and why (e.g., “I’m going to stand in line just like you and wait for a turn to wash my hands.”).

These classroom-management strategies can be embedded into any classroom setting to support better classroom management and ultimately strengthen children’s self-regulation.

Teacher Appreciation Day – Why We Should Respect Teachers

I am from a family full of teachers and educators. I married a School Counselor and Special Education expert, My mom was a teacher, I proudly can say that I have a daughter and a son who are teachers, numerous aunts, sisters-in-law, nieces and friends are teachers. Much of my professional life has been spent working with teachers- supporting them and providing training and consultation to them. So it is no wonder that on Teacher Appreciation Day I am deeply proud and thankful for the teachers in my life.

Most of us can remember at least one teacher who had a profound effect on our life at some point in our development- someone who had a positive impact on us and contributed to making us the person we are today.

Yet teachers in America have been made to feel belittled and underappreciated. In many ways teachers are vilified- the profession disparaged. This trend in thinking over the past couple of decades has prompted a teacher shortage in America- a shortage likely to grow worse over the next decade. Because of this negative messaging about teachers and the teaching profession, college students are significantly less likely than their parents to see teaching as a viable way to become agents of social change. Of all age groups, voters 18-29 are the most pessimistic about the teaching profession. Only 24 percent are “very likely” to encourage a friend or family member to become a K-12 teacher today.

I recently read an essay on the teaching profession where the researchers were asking people to name another profession which they felt had a comparable status to teaching. In the West, teachers were overwhelmingly thought of in the same bracket as librarians or social workers. Compare that to China, where teachers were considered to have an equal status to that of doctors.

There is a definitive societal lack of respect for teachers in the West. The media is a huge source of fueling the demise of the teaching profession. When teachers get a mention in the media they are often blamed for a vast array of society’s ills: from the loss of manners to the decline in academic performance to the shortage of viably trained professionals and vocational workers.

My feeling is that this attitude towards teachers is not just morally wrong, it’s sabotaging the education system. If we constantly attack teachers, we will miss out on generations of talented graduates who will not want to join a profession that is constantly derided.

If our culture so richly rewards celebrities, actors, reality TV personalities and sports stars, heaping praise and riches on them, why should not outstanding teachers be equally celebrated? The moniker “hero” is thrown around so haphazardly today that we often fail to see the true heroes standing right amongst us- and every teacher that I know has worn that proverbial cape more than once in some child’s life.

Teachers wear so many hats today in the classroom- they are educator, nurse, counselor, protector, facilitator, monitor…sometimes they provide the only love and encouragement that a child gets. Teachers work countless hours and have sleepless nights with concerns about their children that they hold close in their hearts. They are as proud as a child’s parent when celebrating accomplishments and as devastated as a parent when a child is hurt in any way.

If you are wondering why we should respect teachers- it is because they hold the future in their hands. There was a teacher behind every great inventor, every great philosopher and every great idea in history. Fierce independent minds – from Nelson Mandela to Steve Jobs – have paid tribute to the influence of a teacher during their early years. Countless future leaders and society contributors will one day credit their teachers as well. If it’s your love of reading, your interest in space, your love of thought and debate- I know that there was a teacher in your past that sparked your interests and fed your self-worth to help make you the adult you are today.

As I look ahead to fiendishly complex challenges of the modern age – from climate change to frenetic technological change to global conflict – I know it will require better ideas, and better teachers, now more than ever. Teachers need our respect and they need it every single day. This current generation is in a better place than most of us to reclaim the teaching profession…and they have a chance to remind us what once made teaching beautiful in a million different ways but, we have to model that kind of respect for teaching in order for them to commit to the profession.

Thank you to the teachers in my life when I was a student- Thank you to the teachers among my family and friends- Thank you to the fabulous group of teachers that I get to work with each and every day at Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center- and thank you to teachers everywhere!

Trust me on this…I know that teachers do not work for prestige or income – Teachers teach for the outcome…They work for “their” children’s success and future.

If we respect ourselves and our decisions, people will respect us.

Every person in our country deserves respect, regardless of their differences.

We should cherish our siblings and friends and show respect to our parents, teachers, and other senior citizens.

The ability to value your individuality and traits comes first from having self-respect.

Our parents and elders have taught us to respect others since childhood.

Respect for the laws and rules of our country is also crucial.

People in our country come from various religious, cultural, and moral backgrounds. However, we should respect everyone regardless of all the facts.

Respect is crucial for effective teamwork and consideration for others.

Respect is earned through an individual's traits, skills, and accomplishments.

“Respect is a two-way street; if you want to get it, you’ve got to give it.” -R.G. Risch . In daily life, we use the term "respect" frequently. But what does it mean? It denotes a respect for someone's worth or quality.

First and foremost, self-respect is vital. You won't be able to earn the respect of others if you don't respect yourself. Each of us has certain qualities that we should treasure. It boosts our value to both ourselves and other people.

Second, we ought to respect our seniors at all times. Our teachers and parents deserve our respect. We appreciate them because of their age, experience, and contribution to our way of life and society. It is very important for all of us to respect the choices and thoughts of others. Something which may not be right in our eyes may be correct according to someone else. If we respect others' choices and decisions, ours will be appreciated too.

Third, we must uphold the laws that govern our nation. Respect for our national flag, national anthem, government, and other aspects of our country is crucial. Finally, I want to add that if we all work together with mutual love and respect, our nation will have a lot of opportunities.

Respect, also called appreciation, is a positive feeling or action shown toward a person or thing that is considered important, highly valued, or respected. Different cultures have different ways of expressing respect. In our nation, India, when we greet one another, we say Namaste while bowing or touching feet to demonstrate respect.

Because of the significance and value it carries, everyone in the world has adopted this ancient cultural tradition. All people, regardless of their age, class, profession, race, or gender, are deserving of respect. Namaste also conveys the same meaning, which is that we are equals and that I respect you by bending down. We can communicate in schools and colleges as well.

Self-Respect

Self-respect is a type of self-love in which an individual values his or her own particular and distinctive path of living life. Accepting one's Real Self's natural character traits and, more importantly, acting on those traits when making decisions about one's own life are what it necessarily involves. Self-respect is crucial because it is the gift we give ourselves when we stop trying to please others in order to win their approval and start acting authentically and with integrity no matter what anyone else thinks.

Why is respecting others important?

For instance, it works the same way as if I wanted to give someone money; I would need to have cash on hand before I could do so. Respect is not different. Only if I already have it inside of me for myself then only I can give it to someone else.

It goes beyond simple manners or etiquette. It's something that's fundamental to being human and required for any type of healthy relationship, whether it be with your family, other people, or even yourself. Additionally, when everyone in the community respects one another, it makes it simpler for people to trust and depend on one another when they need help.

A recent incident occurred while I was hospitalized due to a minor accident. It was a big private hospital, and the medical staff appeared to be very busy. The elderly patient next to my bed appeared scared and uneasy with her surroundings. She seemed to be from a rural area and not very educated. .

She was troubling the nurses with inquiries, but they appeared to be doing their best to ignore her as they went about their work. After a short while, a doctor came over and spoke with me about my situation before going over to the elderly woman to inquire about how her patient was feeling. She was the only member of the staff to respect her and use the proper greeting when addressing her. She didn't appear to mind that the patient wasn't particularly wealthy or from a respectable background, but she still displayed courtesy by answering the questions in a low voice.

The older patient smiled at her because of her modest smile, and she was now more at ease. It helped me realize that it doesn't matter how highly educated or how high up on the higher positions you are. All that is required to demonstrate your character to others is the respect and kindness you show them.

Good Morning everyone Respected the Principal, Teachers and my dear friends. I am here to speak about Respect. Since childhood, we hear from everybody about how it is important to show Respect to everyone in the family, grandparents, elders and teachers. Respect is basically a language that one expresses differently for every one they hold in high regard and feel Respectful towards. 

Respect is shown differently in different cultures. In our country, India we say Namaste with our hands folded and bow or touch the feet to show Respect when we greet each other. This cultural tradition is an ancient one and everyone around the world also has adopted this way because of the meaning and value it holds. 

Each and every individual is worthy of Respect regardless of their age, class, profession, color or gender. 

And the meaning of Namaste also conveys the same, which means we are equal, and I Respect you by bowing down. 

In the schools and colleges, we can also convey Respect by addressing our teachers as Sir and Ma’am instead of calling them by their first names. Whereas this form of addressing does not hold true for the corporate culture. In offices, it is encouraged to call each other by their first names to develop a healthy working relationship without any biasedness. 

So much Respect is shown by physical gestures but much more can be conveyed by body language. One can also be Respectful to their friends and loved ones, by giving them undivided attention when they are speaking, being helpful, not using harsh words, opening the door for the one behind you, being kind is also a sign of Respect. Apologizing for one’s mistakes, saying sorry, please, and thank you is also a sign of Respecting the other person as well as yourself. 

The other form of Respectful behavior also holds true as to how we behave with ourselves and that is called self-Respect. Self-Respect is basically leading your life with grace and dignity without hurting others in the journey. Self-Respect has nothing to do with humiliating others for fulfilling our own agendas. It means showing care towards self and others equally and living a fulfilling life.

In conclusion, I would like to say one need not be loud when being Respectful, these subtle gestures are enough to convey your admiration and love for the person. Respecting and honoring someone is truly a great sign of love; it makes the day positive. It also makes you feel better about yourself so choose your way of Respecting others and yourself and do not indulge in negativity.

Short Speech on Respect for Students

Short Speech on Respect can also be presented as Short Speech on Self Respect and this will be extremely useful for students in grades 4-7 that will help them learn about this topic in simple words.

Good morning everyone, I Abc (mention your name) feel very honored to speak on the topic of Respect which is something that is so important, universal and yet so personal. Respect is a sign language that conveys what you feel for the other person in a simple and positive way. There is a saying that goes, “treat others the way you wish to be treated”, and if you wish to be Respected it is important that you also treat others with equal Respect. 

When you admire someone and hold them in high esteem it is natural that you tend to be more Respectful towards them. Being Respectful to others and treating them in an equal manner also means being Respectful to yourself. As anyone who displays Respectful behavior imparts positivity in everyday life and this way of leading life is more peaceful and less complex.

Being Respectful doesn’t require a lot of effort, rather one needs to do it with just good intentions and value the presence of another person and acknowledge their view. And the world would be a much better place if we just accepted and Respected our differences.

The trait of Respecting is very admired on a professional and personal level. It helps in building healthy and consistent relations with our peers and friends. 

Respecting others and being others also affirms the stature of a person as a human in the society. It establishes the presence of intellect, modesty and decency in a person. It is always very loved and admired by others also, a person who Respects others is always Respected by others as well. When we Respect or disRespect others, we are reflecting the parenting and guidance that we have received from others and as such can be the cause of pride or prejudice to the Respect and dignity of our parents. Proper parenting and proper guidance is very important for the development of a great personality. Education also plays a very important role in our ability and understanding of Respect for others. However it is not necessary that only educated people will Respect others or an illiterate person will not Respect others. 

Respect is not based on the amount of money one has or on the position of power that one may hold. IrRespective of the social hierarchical position, Respect should be equal to everyone and doesn’t discriminate on the basis of social differences. Often doctors, politicians and rich people are seen to be Respected but the others with low wealth, no power and doing menial jobs equally deserve the same level of Respect. 

Humiliation and disRespect to a person on the basis of any distinctions is injustice. Not Respecting others may restrict the person from enjoying his fundamental rights and thus account for a violation of law. Our constitution also directs us to maintain the dignity of every individual and not violate the integrity and dignity of an individual. The constitution makes no discrimination in this regard and thus mandates that we Respect all people. The fundamental duties in our constitution also direct to maintain the Respect of ourselves and others and not to bias on any ground.As a citizen, it thus is our duty to Respect all people and make them feel equally safe and secure in their country. 

Most of the traditions and cultures around the world very precisely put forward the regards to Respect others and to seek Respect. The traditions also don’t discriminate on any ground here. The societal stigmas present in society may sometimes not be in line with our constitutional principles or traditional directions. There are certain societal dogmas like caste distinctions, wealth differences, age etc that come out to be derogatory and disRespectful to other people. These dogmas and beliefs, caste distinction  and wealth differences, age need to be put aside and minds should be enlightened that humans are equal. 

Age is also not a factor in deciding whether a person should be Respected or not, children also deserve to be Respected and appreciated. It falls upon the shoulders of their parents to make sure that they Respect their children and also make sure that others also don’t disRespect them. Wherever such an event comes up where the parents feel that their children are not Respected well, they must act accordingly and make sure their children don’t feel disRespected and insulted. Children are very vulnerable to negative effects and disRespecting them can have physical and mental effects on them.

People can be seen disRespecting other people in front of them or behind their backs, that is not Respect, that is hypocrisy. Respect for others should be deeply embedded in the hearts and minds. Be it for a sweeper or a cobbler, politician or a doctor, all deserve equal Respect as a human and no one deserves to be humiliated and disRespected. Not Respecting others may also have effects on the children of these people because they’ll feel as if they are someone at a lower level, of a lower kind or less human. This is not a proper direction to move in and may lead to severe consequences on these children. 

A person who Respects others is very much loved and cared for by all people. A Respectful person also becomes a role model for other people, especially for the students and hence we must strive to become better of ourselves and always be in the form to Respect others.

Lack of self-respect brings negative concerns and attitude for the person. A person who lacks self-respect is the one who does not get respect from any other person. In addition, such an individual has a higher chance of indulging in bad activities. Also, the person who lacks self-respect suffers through a major lack of self-confidence in himself\herself.

First of all, thank you for being a part of this celebration. We have gathered here to celebrate the annual day of our school and like every year, we will try our best to make this celebration the most memorable for all of you.

I would also like to thank the organizers for giving me the opportunity to host the program. As you all know our school is highly recognized on the international platform and it is one the top 10 schools in the state. The students who pass out from our school get admission in popular colleges and universities and hold quite decent positions in the highly recognized organizations.

The intelligence and general knowledge of our students are highly commendable. I would also urge each of the students of this school to cultivate respect for others. Respect as you all know is an encouraging feeling of admiration for an individual or entity. It shows the honor and kindness shown by a person towards others. It is very important that we respect each other for bringing harmony in the society and always remember that respect cannot be demanded, but earned. And, this respect is earned through our noble deeds and actions.

While it is important that we respect everyone we meet in our lives, it is equally important that we perform such deeds that can help us earn respect. Respect is the greatest asset which a person earns through his behavior and activities done for the office, home or for the community.

It is important that parents teach their kids to respect their elders, grandparents, teachers, their fellow friends and everyone living in their surroundings. Only then we will be able to build a positive society. Nowadays, people lose temper on small issues and indulge into altercations which turn out to be violent sometimes. If children are taught to forgive negligible matters and learn to respect the people around, they would grow up to be happier children.

It is also important for all of us to respect our atmosphere. We should be mindful not to throw garbage in the public place such as roads, parks, footpaths, etc. Children learn what they see; thus good habits must be inculcated by their respective parents and relatives of the children.

I would also like to focus on ‘respect for culture’. I understand that the world is getting globalized and countries are exchanging art, talents, culture, and traditions with each other. But that doesn’t allow anyone to disrespect our Indian culture. Indian culture is the oldest and one of the richest in the world. Today’s children are the future of our nation and thus they must ensure that people across the world respect India.

There is no specific definition of the term ‘respect’ nor is there any formula that would help you respect others. We respect those whom we love. But at times, we come across such people whom we must show respect without expecting anything in return. For e.g. if you are sitting while traveling in a public transport and you come across a disabled person; you must show respect and offer your seat to that person.

Such small deeds would help you earn a lot of respect in the society. Above all, you would start respecting yourself which would always help you lead your life positively.

I welcome all of you to the program titled ‘Give respect in order to earn respect’. Great thanks to the organizers and supporters; without your support, this wouldn’t have been possible.

As you all know, our organization is a charity organization and we work for the old-age people who are outcasts, overlooked or left behind by their relatives. I have been associated with this organization for the last 10 years, since its inception. In these 10 years, the majority of the cases I have come across are related to the senior citizens disowned by their own son/s and family. This sounds strange in a country like India where we talk about preserving our culture, tradition, religion, and ethnicity.

We share numerous messages and quotations on the Parents’ Day, Father’s Day or Mother’s Day, but in reality we lack miserably on the basic ethics and morality. Respecting your parents is not a duty or obligation, it must, in fact, be your religion. Our parents apart from bringing us in this world do so much for us. They fulfill every need of their children and struggle every day to bring a smile on their faces. But when they grow old and when they need us the most, we get so occupied with ourselves that we hardly have time for them and this is the reason why there are so many old-age homes across the world.

My father always says that youngsters gave a lot of respect for seniors in the earlier days. In those days, the youngsters would not sit in front of their elders, forget about smoking or drinking. Sadly, the culture and consciousness of respecting one another are vanishing rapidly in our society in the present times.

In the name of privacy, we indulge in petty activities such as smoking, intoxication, drinking, etc. In the name of freedom, we stay out the entire night, don’t bother to inform our elders, skip meals and vanish for days and weeks without keeping anyone in the loop. This all happen because a majority of us have lost the sense of responsibility. We are becoming more and more impatient and have created a shell around us. If our elders try to knock that shell, we lose patience and behave irrationally like shouting, throwing objects, etc.

I would also like to point out the role of social media towards this transformation. Not that I am blaming the social platform for anything, but the fact remains that majority of people who use social media have become ‘disturb me not’ kind of people. Most of the men who come back home from a tiring day prefer checking out their instant chat messages and profiles of friends on social media instead of spending time with their family. Slowly this is becoming the tradition of almost every home and children today are growing up in this environment. Such children when grow older would not have respect for the real, but virtual people.

Until we develop a sense of love and responsibility towards others, we will not be able to respect others. Respecting others is not a favor you would do to anyone; in fact, you must give respect to others for getting respect in return. The sooner we realize it, the better.

First of all, I would like to welcome all of you to this inspirational program and thank to all the team members who helped each other for organizing this event. I am Vaani from class XII and it is my honor to host this event. Today, this event has been organized especially for the students and their parents. This event is based on the importance of respect in our lives. For today students have prepared play, speeches and many more activities. So before beginning with their performances I would like to deliver a speech on respect as the starting of this event.

As we all know that in today’s world everybody is running after money. Everybody knows that money plays an important role in fulfilling our requirements but, money is also a mode of acquiring a good status in the society and a good status is a mode of acquiring respect among people. So, we can say that respect is a main objective that most of the people have in their whole lives. But we could not consider money as the only means of attaining respect because our behavior and what we do with other people tells us about our respect among them.

Almost everybody in this world wants to get respect. If we want to gain respect then it is very important other people respect also. For gaining respect, a person should understand that he could not ask everybody for respect but he has to earn it because respect can only be earned. A person could gain respect by doing good deeds or by such activities that have the potential of creating respect for him into another’s mind.

If we are talking about respect, then there are some important people in everyone’s life to whom we give so much respect such as our respected parents, grandparents, teachers, etc. These people hold a very important place in our life and in the heart as well. They are the most respected people in our lives.

Despite all these respected people in our lives, there are some people who by their inspirational lives and good deeds forces us to give them respect. Yes! I am talking about our respected soldiers and police because they are the reason for how our country is retaining freedom and independence. They are risking their lives for saving our lives. It is truly not an easy task of protecting such a huge country like ours. They are one of the biggest reasons behind our country’s respect in the entire world.

On this note, I would like conclude my speech and extend special thanks to our Hon’ble Principal ma’am, Teachers for supporting us for organizing this event as well as to all the parents who joined us in this event and for giving this event a great success. I would also like to thank my team members who organized this event with a unity.

But before moving further, I want to say a few words about respect.

As everybody knows that respect is something that almost everybody wants to have. The very important thing that every person should know is that if we want respect than we have to give respect to others also. Every person in this world gains respect on the basis of his/her deeds. If a person has a good behavior or a helping nature then it automatically forces other people to give him respect.

As we know that there are few most important people in our life to whom we should give respect. Yes, I am talking about our parents, teachers, grandparents and many other respected people around us. They are the one who teaches us how to give respect and how to gain respect. We respect our parents because they are the reason for our existence in this world and they do every possible struggle for us to keep us happy. Grandparents also play an important role in our lives. They are known as the most respective people in the house. Most of the grandparents are used to and also loves to take care of their grandchildren. During childhood, mostly children get more attached with their grandparents. But unfortunately, most of the parents and grandparents are neglected by their own children or grandchildren and they have to live their life in the old age homes. This is one of the most painful behave of the children who overlook their parents and grandparents at the time they need their support. Apart from getting respect from their children, they are overlooked and have to go to the old age homes.

Among all these respected people in our life, teachers also hold a very important place. A teacher shows the correct path to his student that leads the student to success. It is quite impossible to attain success without anybody’s guidance and there is no big guide in this world then a teacher. A good teacher makes his best possible efforts to make his student’s future bright. But after having a bright future, most of the students forget to thank their teachers. One should never forget his/her parents, teachers and every person from whom they supported.

So, if we really want to gain respect then firstly we have to respect others and especially our elders including parents, teachers and other elder people.

On this note, I would like to conclude my speech and extend special thanks to our hon’ble principal ma’am for giving us this opportunity to express our views in front of everybody.

MTA webinar wades into, gets mired in, Israel-Palestinian debate

Re “Don’t count on an MCAS compromise” (Opinion, April 10): Thanks to Scot Lehigh for mentioning that a recent webinar on addressing anti-Palestinian racism, hosted by the Massachusetts Teachers Association, “spent the better part of two hours proffering anti-Israel and antisemitic political propaganda,” according to a letter from two Massachusetts state lawmakers.

Merrie Najimy, the former MTA president who facilitated the event, opened by saying, “For most of our career as educators, K-12, we’ve not enjoyed the professional respect to exercise academic freedom. Rather, higher authorities determine our standards and our curriculum. They demand that we teach under the shackles of fidelity, and now broader political forces with their disingenuous motives are attacking education at all levels, especially higher ed.”

Academic freedom, as a general concept, is crucial in higher education because it allows academics to experiment with new ideas, shift old paradigms, and do research that could benefit humanity, all without interference from political appointees or others seeking to turn colleges and universities into propaganda factories. However, the same principles are not appropriate in K-12 education. Despite what the MTA might hope, teachers do not enjoy free speech in their classrooms. On the contrary, what they say in front of their students — a captive audience — is a form of government speech.

One of the first slides in the MTA’s webinar was titled, “Questions to Guide Critical Thinking.” It asked, “Does this statement shame and blame the oppressed?” Further bullets asked, “Is this designed to intimidate me from standing in solidarity? Who does the statement advantage? Who does it disadvantage?” “Norms” such as these were essentially weaponized to discourage webinar participants from challenging whatever bigotry or bias they were about to hear.

If this reflects the MTA’s understanding of critical thinking, we should be wary that the MTA board of directors is said to be developing a curriculum on Israel and Palestinians for Massachusetts teachers and students.

Jill biden rallies women, teachers for the biden-harris ticket in bloomington speeches.

First Lady Jill Biden highlighted her husband's plans for education and rallied with teachers and women voters Friday night in Bloomington, putting a focus on women's rights and the protection of reproductive rights in the United States.

Delivering a campaign speech to a crowd of about 200 at Nine Mile Brewing, Biden said it was important to re-elect President Joe Biden to protect and restore reproductive rights following the 2022 Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

"It's heartbreaking to see that your generation has to re-fight battles that we thought we had settled so many decades ago," Biden said. "Post-Roe America isn't the future that we should be handing down to our daughters and our sons, and I promise you, Joe and I are by your side in this fight, and we're not going to rest until we right every wrong."

She took aim several times at former President Donald Trump, warning that there is "no guarantee that access to reproductive health care will remain" if Trump wins in November.

Biden took time to praise Minnesota's women in high-ranking elected positions, saying that the president has placed women "at the center of his agenda" with his selections of Vice President Kamala Harris and Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

"Joe has spent his entire career lifting up women, but that other guy, Trump, he spent a lifetime tearing us down and devaluing our existence," she said.

The brewery crowd of mostly women included a mix of young and middle-aged people and seniors from an array of professions, including teachers, legislators, students and representatives of reproductive rights advocacy groups.

Following her 12-minute speech at the brewery, Biden — a community college educator who has worked in classrooms for more than three decades — left for Education Minnesota's annual convention at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington. She kicked off "Educators for Biden-Harris," a national organizing program to "engage and mobilize teachers, school staff, and parents" in the presidential election, according to a news release from the campaign.

Education Minnesota is the state's largest union representing the state's teachers, and its political action committee is consistently one of the biggest backers of Democratic campaigns in Minnesota, spending $5.2 million in the 2022 midterm election.

Outside the hotel, about 100 pro-Palestine protesters chanted and held signs as Biden's motorcade swept by. They expressed anger about the president's handling of the Israel-Hamas war and U.S. aid to Israel.

"Jill Biden's campaign to ask educators to vote for Biden is against my values as a teacher who believes that all humans have a right to education, and who thinks the money that is spent on this genocide should be spent on our underfunded schools here in the U.S.," said Meredith Aby Keirstead, a member of the MN Free Palestine Coalition, in a statement.

Jill Biden made several trips to Minnesota during her husband's 2020 election campaign, when Joe Biden decisively beat Donald Trump in Minnesota by more than 7 percentage points. Recent polling from KSTP-TV shows Biden and Trump in a statistical dead heat this cycle, with Biden's lead over the former president falling within the poll's margin of error.

That could force Biden and his surrogates to campaign in Minnesota this year, despite the state's long track record of supporting Democratic presidential candidates.

Biden has hired three veteran political operatives to manage his campaign in Minnesota. U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer is serving as Trump's Minnesota campaign chair and is developing a plan intended to flip the state for Republicans this fall.

A retired Pennsylvania teacher is suing his local government after he was convicted of a criminal charge for putting a “For Sale” sign in his truck window.

Will Cramer teamed up with the Institute for Justice last week to take legal action against the borough of Nazareth over its ordinance, claiming that it’s a violation of his First Amendment rights, according to the nonprofit law firm.

Cramer had put the sign in his 1987 Chevy Deluxe last October and received a ticket stating that parking a vehicle in public “for the purposes” of selling it was illegal.

“It made no sense to me that I could park my truck on the street legally, but as soon as I put a ‘For Sale’ sign in the window, it became illegal,” said Cramer, who was found guilty by a judge after trying to fight his ticket.

“This lawsuit is bigger than me, it’s about standing up for the free speech rights of everybody in Nazareth.” 

Cramer had decided to sell his truck while planning to retire from his job teaching high school geometry and teach English in the Philippines for a year, he told Fox News Digital Thursday.

“I was retiring, and I was finally going to move to another country, so there was urgency to sell my truck,” Cramer said. “I wanted to sell some of my items and not take them with me. I didn’t want to store them.” 

After failing to immediately sell the truck online, he parked it on the street outside his house and put the sign on the window.

“When I pulled the ticket out from underneath the windshield wiper blade and I looked at it, I was actually receiving a ticket for putting a ‘For Sale’ sign and then advertising my car for sale,” Cramer said. “I wasn’t angry, I wasn’t mad, I was just trying to take it in.”

“Like, is this for real? Am I getting a ticket for putting a ‘For Sale’ sign on my truck?” he added. 

Indeed, Nazareth ordinance 15-411 specifically prohibits parking a vehicle on the street for “Displaying the same for sale,” according to the borough’s bylaws .

Cramer did actually end up selling the truck to someone who had seen the sign, and he decided to just pay the fine by mail.

“I just paid it, I wanted to get it over with,” he said. “And then I went back home to try to finish the rest of the things that I had to do to complete before I could leave.”

However, his check was reportedly returned by the town with a letter saying he owed additional late fees.

“At this point I got kind of angry because I thought it was bad enough that they violated my freedom of speech,” he told the outlet. “Now they want more money because they didn’t get the ticket exactly on the date that they needed it.”

Cramer then pleaded not guilty and represented himself in court — citing the Constitution — to no avail.

He was convicted and ordered to pay $123.75 in fines and court costs, according to the report.

Cramer is fighting for a permanent injunction that would bar the township of about 6,000 from enforcing the ordinance “against a traditional, low-cost, and effective form of personal commercial speech.”

The Post reached out to Nazareth’s top lawmaker for clarification on the now-controversial ordinance.

“People have put ‘For Sale’ signs in car windows for as long as cars have been around, and there is no legitimate reason for the government to ban doing so,” said IJ Litigation fellow Bobbi Taylor, one of the attorneys representing Cramer.

“Americans have a First Amendment right to truthfully advertise things they are selling, and that includes putting a ‘For Sale’ sign in their car window.”

All 12 jurors, plus an alternate, were selected this week to serve on the jury in former President Donald Trump’s  hush money trial  in New York after they made it clear to both sides that they could render a fair and impartial verdict.

Prosecutors and the defense team whittled down a pool of nearly 200 people to 12 jurors and an alternate after grilling them on their personal history, political views, social media posts, and ability to remain impartial despite any opinions they might have about the polarizing former president.

Seven people were sworn in Tuesday but two of them ended up being removed on Thursday for possible conflicts. Later Thursday, the remaining seven jurors were sworn in, plus one alternate.

The trial is expected to last as long as eight weeks.
