Find a supervisor, admission to doctoral studies, requirements for admission and procedures, content and requirements, individual phd and phd programs, procedures at uzh faculties, employment and funding, for international students and scholars.

First of all, get in contact with a UZH professor who is willing and able to supervise your doctoral project. If you are interested in participating in a PhD program, you should first of all carefully read through the application procedures for the program in question. Doctoral programs at UZH

The doctorate is comprised of a PhD thesis as well as coursework. It serves as a qualification for an academic career or other demanding professions.

As a general rule, a Master's degree or an equivalent degree from an accredited university is the prerequisite for admission to the doctorate. Certain criteria regarding content as well as formal conditions (e.g. grade-point average, qualification phases) are also considered when processing applications.

Admission to Doctoral Studies

The requirements for admission and the admission procedures are set out in the ordinance for obtaining a doctoral degree at the faculty in question. Some faculties also offer a  fast-track  doctoral program, a program for particularly talented students in which the Master's degree and PhD are integrated in a single program of study. The individual programs define their PhD programs' admission procedures – which, as a rule, are highly competitive.

Please note that PhD candidates must be matriculated at the University for the duration of their doctorate, i.e. until they have been conferred the final degree.

Application and admission Application period

Writing a PhD thesis – independent and original academic work – forms the core part of the doctorate. The thesis can take the form of a monograph or consist of several publications on a single subject which have been published in scientific journals (a cumulative PhD thesis). You can find more information about the formal requirements in the doctoral program regulations for your subject area. As a general rule, however, the thesis should be of such scope and content that it can be completed within three years.

The required coursework serves to enhance subject-specific skills, but also goes toward developing transferable skills. All coursework will be recorded in your final transcript of records and Academic Record. Coursework requirements can be fulfilled by attending courses in your subject area, by visiting classes from the main pool of courses in transferable skills (transferable skills and university-level teaching), or, in some cases by attending courses at another institution. Alongside the required coursework (including transferable skills), it is highly recommended that PhD candidates develop their teaching skills. Transferable skills courses University-level teaching

In many disciplines at UZH there are two types of doctoral programs offered: the individual doctorate and the structured doctoral programs . Moreover there are also interdisciplinary and inter-university schools or programs, partly financed by third-party funds. Doctoral Programs

Because the various faculties at UZH are thematically and structurally so diverse, each faculty is in charge of designing its own PhD program.

Be sure to read about the specific requirements at the faculty in question.

Various types of academic employment opportunities at UZH are open to junior scholars. During doctoral study, you can find employment as a «PhD candidate» or an «academic assistant»; postdocs receive positions as «postdocs» or «senior research and teaching assistants». These junior academic positions are an integral part of the procedure when pursuing an academic career. Junior academic positions are by nature temporary and are funded either by the university department in question or by a third party. Junior academic positions give young scholars the opportunity to achieve their next professional goal and to further qualify themselves for a career in academia. The main requirement for earning the necessary academic qualifications is performing individual research, but junior researchers are also given the opportunity to qualify themselves for teaching roles. In 2003 the guidelines for specifications at UZH faculties for employees holding junior academic positions were issued to define the rights and duties of UZH employees in junior academic positions. These were revised in fall 2023 and a new employment model was defined, which will come into effect on January 1, 2024. Employees with the status of a junior academic receive individual specifications which refer explicitly to their job description.

Taking a doctorate at ETH Zurich is an excellent investment for your future scientific career.

university of zurich phd in finance

With 4500 doctoral students out of a total of over 25'000 students, ETH Zurich is one of the universities in Europe which focuses most intensively on research. Doctorates make a significant, fundamental contribution to that research work. They are based on research projects that are carried out independently, with the support of a professor.

Apart from a few exceptional cases, all doctoral students at ETH Zurich are employed as scientific assistants. However, they are not only employees but also students, and they are obliged in the course of their doctoral study to continue their education, inside and outside their specialist area. Another important component of a doctorate is learning how to educate others. That is why every doctoral student plays an active part in the teaching work of their department.

At the end of their research project, the results are compiled in a thesis that is defended in an oral examination. On successful completion of their doctorate, students are awarded the title “Doctor of Sciences (Dr. sc. ETH Zurich)”.

A Master's study program in Banking and Finance provides an in-depth insight into the world of banks and financial markets, addressing questions such as: How do you value stocks and other securities? Where do companies obtain the capital for takeovers worth billions, and how do they decide where to invest? To what extent can turbulence affecting financial markets be attributed to psychological factors?

The Master's study program contains four areas of concentration. In Banking, you will take a more intensive look at the structures of credit institutions and how they work. Corporate Finance examines company finance and investment economics. In Financial Economics, you will deal with resource allocation as well as pricing on capital and financial markets, and in Quantitative Finance, you will use applied mathematical methods to analyze financial market-related subjects.

As a business and financial center with a strong international profile, Zurich offers an outstanding environment for studying Banking and Finance. Thanks to guest lectures from business representatives and seminars offered in cooperation with companies, you will come into contact with the professional world right from an early stage.

Good knowledge of English is required for the Master's program in Banking and Finance as the majority of courses are taught in English.

Career prospects and further degree programs

Graduates are ideally qualified to assume specialized or management roles of significant responsibility in the banking, insurance and consulting industries and in the public sector. Careers as an investment banker, financial analyst, risk manager, portfolio manager or financial consultant represent only a small selection of a broad array of professional options.

Moreover, graduates with the right aptitude have the opportunity to pursue academic research by completing a doctorate.

Vantage Data Centers unveils plans for second Zurich campus

ZRH2 will provide an additional 24MW of critical IT capacity to help meet the rising demand fuelled by AI and high-performance applications

A server rack inside a data center. The entire shot is lit in stark, blue light.

Vantage Data Centers has announced that it will expand its EMEA portfolio with the opening of a second Zurich data center campus this summer in a bid to meet growing regional demand.

Dubbed ZRH2, the highly secure and carrier-neutral campus will feature a total of 226,000 square ft at its location in Glattfelden, 30km north of Zurich’s city center. It is expected to deliver an additional 24MW of critical IT capacity.

Combined with the firm’s existing flagship ZRH1 campus, located just over 20km away in Winterthur, the pair will deliver a total capacity of 64MW to meet the computing requirements of hyperscalers , cloud providers, and large enterprises.

Vantage said it will employ more than 400 workers during peak construction, while the campus itself will provide a total of 25 jobs once operational.

Sustainable by design

The new campus follows Vantage’s “Sustainable by Design” blueprint, as it works to achieve its target of net zero carbon emissions across its global portfolio by 2030. The company said ZRH2 will deliver industry-leading power usage effectiveness (PUE) and water usage effectiveness (WUE).

To this end, the campus will include several green data center features. These include air source (ASHP) and water source (WSHP) heat pumps to condition administrative spaces using repurposed waste heat and reduce reliance on external energy, while also providing heat to a nearby hotel and seminar center.

To help minimize its impact on the environment, the site will also feature rainwater infiltration and a ‘green roof’ containing plants. Vantage said the roof will be finished with a facade capable of withstanding harsh seasonal weather, while also blending with the aesthetic of the surrounding community.

Black text that say serious about sustainability?

What you must consider when building a data center

In an announcement, Vantage said the new Zurich campus will help it to meet the increased performance and energy demands being fuelled by the adoption of AI and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads.

“Zurich is a rapidly growing data center market due to its strategic central location and its global financial leadership and we expect to continue developing in this market based on customer demand,” said David Howson, EMEA president at Vantage Data Centers. “Across Europe and the globe, the demand for highly efficient, hyperscale data centers is booming to meet the needs of next-generation applications, from powerful AI models to high-performance computing and cloud transformation .

“Vantage is prepared to meet that demand for current and new customers, and we look forward to opening the doors of our latest data center this summer.”

Seventeen years after studying at Sam Houston State University as part of a master’s exchange program, Swiss criminal justice professor Nora Markwalder returned to Huntsville for her sabbatical during the spring semester. Her story highlights the importance of global understanding in an ever-changing field as well as the university’s commitment to fostering international relations.

“I have always encouraged people to travel abroad and participate in an exchange semester or year if they can,” Markwalder said. “For me, it is very important to compare other countries’ systems and identify the differences. It enlarges your vision of the social phenomenon of crime.”

While Markwalder pursued her Master of Law in Criminal Justice at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland in 2005, SHSU Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology Jurg Gerber was teaching a one-week intensive seminar in white collar crime at the Swiss university. Markwalder happened to be a student in this course.

“Thanks to Dr. Gerber, my university had an exchange agreement with SHSU,” Markwalder said. “I always wanted to participate in an exchange year during my studies and decided to go to Sam since I already had a relationship with him. I also thought it would be more interesting to go to Texas than New York or California, as other colleagues of mine did, because I wanted to have an authentic American feel.”

Gerber, who is also from Switzerland, has taught at SHSU since 1990. Throughout his tenure, he has been instrumental in establishing and growing the university’s global reach. He serves as director of International Initiatives for the College of Criminal Justice and was director of International Programs for the entire university from 2001-05. He has also held a number of administrative roles, including chair of the Department of Security Studies (2014-16), associate dean for Academic Administration (1998-2000), assistant dean for Graduate Programs (1997-98) and assistant dean for Undergraduate Programs (1994-97).

“I am a firm believer in the idea that in order to understand your own system well, you have to understand other systems,” Gerber said. “There are both academic and professional exchanges going on in our criminal justice program at the same time and there is a lot of support for the idea that they can learn from us and we can learn from them.”

Gerber served as Markwalder’s unofficial adviser during her first stint at SHSU as a student. The two kept in touch over the years and reconnected at conferences for the American Society of Criminology as well as Gerber’s summer stints in Switzerland.

Since finishing her master’s at Sam during the 2006-07 academic year, Markwalder completed her Doctor of Laws degree at the University of Zurich in 2012 and was admitted to the Zurich Bar in 2014. After working as a defense attorney, she accepted an assistant professorship at the University of St. Gallen. She has since been promoted to a full-time professor at St. Gallen and chiefly focuses on criminal law and procedures, white collar crime and criminology.

“When I told Dr. Gerber that I would have my sabbatical and wanted to go back to the U.S., he suggested I come back to SHSU,” Markwalder said. “I thought it would be a great idea because I loved it here and wanted to see how everything changed.”

Her unique perspective offers insight into how much the campus, and Huntsville as a whole, has transformed in 17 years.

“I hardly recognized it; it has grown immensely,” Markwalder said. “But I am very happy and thankful that I could come back for another great experience.”

During her sabbatical semester, Markwalder has mainly focused on updating her mentor’s German-language textbook, which focuses on the generalities of crime and requires heavy research. She has also spent the time focusing on other projects, such as updating Swiss homicide databases and researching future articles, including a special issue for the Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice.

Markwalder will return to Switzerland in July to resume her role at the University of St.Gallen.
