How to Write a Sociology Assignment – Explained With Examples

What is a sociology assignment?

A sociology assignment is a task to find out the answer to unknown questions in society. It contributes to understanding, analyze as well to comparing, and contrasting the past, present as well as future. It helps the readers to understand society and its institutions.

Mastering Sociology Assignment Writing: A Step-by-Step Guide Illustrated with Examples

As a university student, the most critical skill to learn is how to write an assignment. More than half of a student’s life goes into writing and submitting assignments. Without learning this skill, one cannot simply graduate from a university. However, we call this a skill because it has to be cultivated and learned. Therefore, to write a sociology assignment, one must learn specific skills. It is not simply writing an essay; it takes a deeper understanding and hard work to write an academic assignment. Today in this article, we will discuss how you can write a sociology assignment and ace it!

The article will be divided into the following sections:

  • Understanding the Question asked
  • Selecting the resources to add to the assignment

To make this article more understandable, we will take a running example. Through the help of the example, we hope to provide an A to Z guidance about writing a sociology assignment.

Understanding the Sociology Assignment Question

How to do sociology assignment ? get help here

The first and essential part of any assignment is to make sure that you understand the question well. Students very often lose out on marks because they fail to understand the question asked. Understanding the question in the beginning itself leaves almost no margin for silly mistakes.

For example

The assignment given by the teacher asks you to review the following work: The viewer society. Michel Foucault’s ‘Panopticon’ revisited”, written by Thomas Mathiesen

This question is pretty straightforward, but that doesn’t mean that it’ll be easy. The one thing you can always count on in sociology is to offer simple questions with critical answers. For the question asked above, what needs to be done is to read the mentioned article critically and then reflect on it.

from the choices offered and read it in such a manner that you can answer all the sub-questions asked.

Selecting the Resources

Once you’ve understood the question, the next step is to search for resources. Your resources cannot be vague. They have to be directly related to the question that has been asked to you. Two conditions can emerge when it comes to resource research. The first condition can be that you have the exact material needed to complete the assignment. The second condition can be when you have been given a question and now have to gather material yourself. It is the second condition that is more tricky. To accumulate study material, you can refer to the following websites that are tried and tested by numerous students and scholars:

  • Google Scholar
  • Shodhganga

For example:

In our case, we already know the exact article that needs to be read in order to complete the review or reflexive assignment.

You will read the article thoroughly and in its entirety. Since the professor has asked for a review of the paper, we will focus on targeted reading. Follow the pointers mentioned below to make the most out of your reading.

  • While you read the article, underline or highlight the important lines. You can even color-code your highlighting by using different ink colors to distinguish between arguments and examples.
  • Once you have read the article fully, write down what is the main argument of the text according to you. The main argument is that one recurring question or theme is being discussed throughout the article.
  • While reading or after reading, make a note of how and why you agree or disagree with the author. It is always recommended to judge an article by evaluating its pros and cons .
  • While reading if any new ideas or examples emerge in your mind make sure to make a note of them. This personal contribution adds to the quality of an answer.

At this point, you are now clear with your question, and you have done the necessary reading to draft your assignment. The next step is to plan your answer. This planning happens before you sit to write your assignment. Before you attempt to write, make a rough outline. This rough outline should briefly mention what you plan to write in which section and in which order. The plan you create will only be a basic map that will guide you to write in detail.

For example:

In this assignment, your task is to review it. You have read the article and made notes by now. Now it is your turn to form a rough template determining how you wish to proceed with your answer. You can create a template similar to this one:

  • Introduction – 1 paragraph
  • The main argument made by the author along with examples offered by you to relate the writing with the reality – 4 or more paragraphs
  • Conclusion – 1 paragraph

The planning stage can also include a timeline. You can generate a timeline for yourself where you self-appoint deadlines. When you manage your time systematically, you write better. The work done with ease and time always has more quality than the work completed at the last moment.

Writing Sociology Assignment

All the efforts and the hard work you have done will now be applied. What is an assignment if not to convey what you have in your mind to the reader? A sociology assignment should be written in a concise and factually correct manner. Keep in mind that sociology is the scientific study of human society, and statements cannot be made lightly in passing. At this moment, you know what the question has asked. You also have designated a plan to complete the assignment. All that needs to be done now is to put all that background research into words.

Introduction

Start your review by giving a brief summary of what the paper really talks about. Give the reader a very broad idea about what this reading is about. In the introductory paragraph, you can leave out the finer details and focus on the main theme running across the piece of writing. Additionally, you can also provide an overview to the reader telling them what and how you plan to tackle this review. Inform the reader what to expect from this assignment.

For example, you could write something like this:

The article by Thomas Mathiesen is a critique of Foucault’s concept of the “Panopticon”. The concept and idea of the Panopticon which Foucault borrowed from Jeremy Bentham is one of the most important concepts included in his book Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison. Through the medium of this article, Mathiesen has shown how Panopticon is present in today’s society. He shows that Panopticon is not the only reality of the modern state like Foucault suggested, but it has grown alongside another phenomenon of “Synopticon”. The paper throughout its length aims to exhibit the developmental parallels and relationships between Panopticon and Synopticon, as well as their reciprocal functions.

Main Body (the arguments presented by the author and the examples offered by you)

This will be the largest and the most significant portion of your answer. In this section, you have to now dwell on finer details and curate an answer that flows naturally discussing all the aspects that Mathiesen pointed out. Here you critically reflect back on what the author had to say and agree or disagree with them by providing examples from contemporary scenarios. Make sure that you divide your arguments in different paragraphs. Ideally, the Sociology Group recommends that you allocate two paragraphs to explain one argument. The first paragraph should give the summary of what the author said and the following paragraph should reflect your view of things.

Arguments made by Mathiesen:-

Thomas Mathiesen talks about another concept that is leading society today, Synopticism. This is also a critique of Panopticism. Mathiesen suggests that unlike what Foucault said, today we are living in a ‘viewer society’, where the many see a few. This is possible because of the ever-growing prevalence of mass media. He asserts that while talking about Panopticism, Foucault completely omitted to mention mass media even when both these functions were growing simultaneously. The reason for this, Mathiesen states, can be because if Foucault did include mass media in the analysis, then his entire argument of Panopticon would have changed (Mathiesen, 1997, 219).

Your reflection and examples put forth:-

Today we do live in a society that is guided by surveillance. Wherever we go we are faced with different forms of surveillance, the most common of which is the use of CCTV cameras. If I talk about myself and my daily routine, it is filled with me being captured in a CCTV camera. A camera which I do not know who has access to, or who watches me. I live in a big colony which is filled with cameras. The floor on which I live has two CCTVs, there’s one in the lift, then there are cameras all over the society and even in the market area. Outside, the dominant mode of travel is the metro, which again has CCTV cameras installed after every ten steps. Foucault through his work also suggests that it is this invisible surveillance that controls our body by controlling the soul. I think this is true to a lot of extents as well. In many public places, people only subject themselves to discipline because of the threat of “being seen”. CCTVs are the biggest reason for this.

Conclusion

This will be the final section of your assignment. A conclusion is an important section that summarizes all that you’ve written. It is similar to writing an introduction. You must include an abbreviated version of the numerous arguments and points that you have mentioned in detail above. As a result, a conclusion is a section in which you have one last chance to inform your reader of what you’ve said in your piece.

Also Check: Compare and Contrast Essay – Guide

In conclusion, I would say that this was a fairly well-written article, but it did have its own shortcomings. First of all, the concept of the Panopticon used by Foucault could have been explained in a more detailed way. For the people who do not know this theory, it gets a little generic and vague to understand what Panopticon is and how it is related to surveillance and discipline. Secondly, the section written on the use of the Internet and its significance in the Synoptic system was described very poorly. It is not justified, and its placement in the article broke the flow. Lastly, I would reiterate that this article was easy to understand for those who know what Panopticon means in the Foucauldian sense. And it was interesting to see how both the systems of Panopticon and Synopticon operate simultaneously and shape the society we live in today.

Academic writing is impossible to complete in a single sitting. You should revise, rewrite, and reread your material several times. Do not revise your essay immediately after completing the first draft. Allow for a period of time, at least four hours. Then go back over your essay and make changes based on three criteria. The first thing you should look for is any grammatical or spelling errors. The second criterion is to examine the arguments you’ve made and whether or not the examples you’ve provided are related. The third criterion is to read the article objectively and as a reader. The more you modify, the better your results will be. However, the Sociology Group believes that your third iteration is the most important. Draft 1 is a raw version, Draft 2 is an updated version, and Draft 3 is the final version.

When you are done writing and reviewing the assignment, make sure that you add proper citations and references to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism should be avoided in any academic article. However, how can one avoid plagiarism when their essay is based on research conducted by others? Giving acknowledgment to the original author for their work is the solution. This is accomplished in academics through the Citation and Referencing processes (sometimes also called Bibliography).

There are many different styles of citations and you can determine which you want to follow. Some of the most common styles of citation and referencing are MLA, APA, and Chicago styles. If you are working on Google Docs or Word then the application makes your work easier because they help you curate your citations.

How to add citations in Google Doc: Tools → Citation

How to add citations in Word Document: References → Insert Citations

But for those who want to cite manually, this is the basic format to follow:

  • Author’s Name with Surname mentioned first, then initials
  • Article’s Title in single or double quotes
  • Journal Title in Italics
  • Volume, issue number
  • Year of Publication

The Acknowledgements Section

How to write the acknowledgements for your thesis or dissertation

By: Derek Jansen (MBA) | Reviewers: Dr Eunice Rautenbach | January 2024

Writing the acknowledgements section of your thesis might seem straightforward, but it’s more than just a list of names . In this post, we’ll unpack everything you need to know to write up a rock-solid acknowledgements section for your dissertation or thesis.

Overview: The Acknowledgements

  • What (exactly) is the acknowledgements section?

Who should you acknowledge?

  • How to write the section
  • Practical example
  • Free acknowledgements template
  • Key takeaways

What is the acknowledgements section?

The acknowledgements section of your thesis or dissertation is where you give thanks to the people who contributed to your project’s success. Generally speaking, this is a relatively brief, less formal section.

With the acknowledgements section, you have the opportunity to show appreciation for the guidance, support, and resources provided by others during your research journey. We’ll unpack the exact contents, order and structure of this section in this post.

Need a helping hand?

acknowledgement for sociology assignment

Although this is a less “academic” section, acknowledging the right people in the correct order is still important. Typically, you’ll start with the most formal (academic) support received, before moving on to other types of support.

Here’s a suggested order that you can follow when writing up your acknowledgements:

Level 1: Supervisors and academic staff

Start with those who have provided you with academic guidance, including your supervisor, advisors, and other faculty members.

Level 2: Funding bodies or sponsors

If your research was funded, acknowledging these organisations is essential. You don’t need to get into the specifics of the funding, but you should recognise the important role that this made in bringing your project to life.

Level 3: Colleagues and peers

Next you’ll want to mention those who contributed intellectually to your work, including your fellow cohort members and researchers.

Level 4: Family, friends and pets

Last but certainly not least, you should acknowledge your personal (non-academic) support system – those who have provided emotional and moral support. If Fido kept you company during those long nights hunched over the keyboard, you can also thank him here 🙂

As you can see, the order of the acknowledgements goes from the most academic to the least . Importantly, your thesis or dissertation supervisor (sometimes also called an advisor) generally comes first . This is because they are typically the person most involved in shaping your project (or at least, they should be). Plus, they’re oftentimes involved in marking your final work and so a kind word never hurts…

All that said, remember that your acknowledgements section is personal . So, feel free to adjust this order, but do pay close attention to any guidelines or rules provided by your university. If they specify a certain order or set of contents, follow their instructions to the letter.

How to write the acknowledgements section

In terms of style, try to strike a balance between conveying a formal tone and a personal touch . In practical terms, this means that you should use plain, straightforward language (this isn’t the time for heavy academic jargon), but avoid using any slang, nicknames, etc.

As a guide, you’ll typically use some of the following phrases in the acknowledgements section:

I would like to express my appreciation to… for their help with… I’m particularly grateful to… as they provided… I could not have completed this project without… as this allowed me to… Special thanks to… who did… I had the pleasure of working with… who helped me… I’d also like to recognise… who assisted me with…

In terms of positioning, the acknowledgements section is typically in the preliminary matter , most commonly after the abstract and before the table of contents. In terms of length, this section usually spans one to three paragraphs , but there’s no strict word limit (unless your university’s brief states otherwise, of course).

If you’re unsure where to place your acknowledgements or what length to make this section, it’s a good idea to have a look at past dissertations and theses from your university and/or department to get a clearer view of what the norms are.

Aim to use plain, straightforward language with as little jargon as possible. At the same time, avoid using any slang or nicknames.

Practical Example

Alright, let’s look at an example to give you a better idea of what this section looks like in practice.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Professor Smith, whose expertise and knowledge were invaluable during this research. My sincere thanks also go to the University Research Fund for their financial support.   I am deeply thankful to my colleagues, John and Jane, for their insightful discussions and moral support. Lastly, I must acknowledge my family for their unwavering love and encouragement. Without your support, this project would not have been possible.

As you can see in this example, the section is short and to the point , working from formal support through to personal support.

To simplify the process, we’ve created a free template for the acknowledgements section. If you’re interested, you can download a copy here .

FAQs: Acknowledgements

Can i include some humour in my acknowledgements.

A touch of light humour is okay, but keep it appropriate and professional. Remember that this is still part of an academic document.

Can I acknowledge someone who provided informal or emotional support?

Yes, you can thank anyone who offered emotional support, motivation, or even informal advice that helped you during your studies. This can include friends, family members, or a mentor/coach who provided guidance outside of an academic setting.

Should I mention any challenges or difficulties I faced during my research?

While the acknowledgements section is primarily for expressing gratitude, briefly mentioning significant challenges you overcame can highlight the importance of the support you received. That said, you’ll want to keep the focus on the gratitude aspect and avoid delving too deeply into the challenges themselves.

Can I acknowledge the contribution of participants in my research?

Absolutely. If your research involved participants, especially in fields like social sciences or human studies, acknowledging their contribution is not only courteous but also an ethical practice. It shows respect for their participation and contribution to your research.

How do I acknowledge posthumous gratitude, for someone who passed away during my study period?

Acknowledging a deceased individual who played a significant role in your academic journey can be done respectfully. Mention them in the same way you would a living contributor, perhaps adding a note of remembrance.

For example, “I would like to posthumously acknowledge John McAnders for their invaluable advice and support in the early stages of this research.”.

Is there a limit to the number of people I can acknowledge?

How do i acknowledge a group or organisation.

When thanking a group or organization, mention the entity by name and, if applicable, include specific individuals within the organization who were particularly helpful.

For example, “I extend my thanks to The Speakers Foundation for their support, particularly Mr Joe Wilkins, for their guidance.”

Thesis & Dissertation Acknowledgements | Tips & Examples

Published on May 3, 2022 by Tegan George . Revised on July 18, 2023.

Acknowledgements-section

The acknowledgements section is your opportunity to thank those who have helped and supported you personally and professionally during your thesis or dissertation process.

Thesis or dissertation acknowledgements appear between your title page and abstract  and should be no longer than one page.

In your acknowledgements, it’s okay to use a more informal style than is usually permitted in academic writing , as well as first-person pronouns . Acknowledgements are not considered part of the academic work itself, but rather your chance to write something more personal.

To get started, download our step-by-step template in the format of your choice below. We’ve also included sample sentence starters to help you construct your acknowledgments section from scratch.

Who to thank in your acknowledgements, how to write acknowledgements, acknowledgements section example, acknowledgements dos and don’ts, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about the acknowledgements section.

Generally, there are two main categories of acknowledgements: professional and personal .

A good first step is to check your university’s guidelines, as they may have rules or preferences about the order, phrasing, or layout of acknowledgements. Some institutions prefer that you keep your acknowledgements strictly professional.

Regardless, it’s usually a good idea to place professional acknowledgements first, followed by any personal ones. You can then proceed by ranking who you’d like to thank from most formal to least.

  • Chairs, supervisors, or defense committees
  • Funding bodies
  • Other academics (e.g., colleagues or cohort members)
  • Editors or proofreaders
  • Librarians, research/laboratory assistants, or study participants
  • Family, friends, or pets

Typically, it’s only necessary to mention people who directly supported you during your thesis or dissertation. However, if you feel that someone like a high school physics teacher was a great inspiration on the path to your current research, feel free to include them as well.

Professional acknowledgements

It is crucial to avoid overlooking anyone who helped you professionally as you completed your thesis or dissertation. As a rule of thumb, anyone who directly contributed to your research process, from figuring out your dissertation topic to your final proofread, should be mentioned.

A few things to keep in mind include:

  • Even if you feel your chair didn’t help you very much, you should still thank them first to avoid looking like you’re snubbing them.
  • Be sure to follow academic conventions, using full names with titles where appropriate.
  • If several members of a group or organization assisted you, mention the collective name only.
  • Remember the ethical considerations around anonymized data. If you wish to protect someone’s privacy, use only their first name or a generic identifier (such as “the interviewees”)/

Personal acknowledgements

There is no need to mention every member of your family or friend group. However, if someone was particularly inspiring or supportive, you may wish to mention them specifically. Many people choose to thank parents, partners, children, friends, and even pets, but you can mention anyone who offered moral support or encouragement, or helped you in a tangible or intangible way.

Some students may wish to dedicate their dissertation to a deceased influential person in their personal life. In this case, it’s okay to mention them first, before any professional acknowledgements.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

After you’ve compiled a list of who you’d like to thank, you can then sort your list into rank order. Separate everyone you listed into “major thanks,” “big thanks,” and “minor thanks” categories.

  • “Major thanks” are given to people who your project would be impossible without. These are often predominantly professional acknowledgements, such as your advisor, chair, and committee, as well as any funders.
  • “Big thanks” are an in-between, for those who helped you along the way or helped you grow intellectually, such as classmates, peers, or librarians.
  • “Minor thanks” can be a catch-all for everyone else, especially those who offered moral support or encouragement. This can include personal acknowledgements, such as parents, partners, children, friends, or even pets.

How to phrase your acknowledgements

To avoid acknowledgements that sound repetitive or dull, consider changing up your phrasing. Here are some examples of common sentence starters you can use for each category.

Note that you do not need to write any sort of conclusion or summary at the end. You can simply end the acknowledgements with your last thank you.

Here’s an example of how you can combine the different sentences to write your acknowledgements.

A simple construction consists of a sentence starter (in purple highlight ), followed by the person or entity mentioned (in green highlight ), followed by what you’re thanking them for (in yellow highlight .)

Acknowledgements

Words cannot express my gratitude to my professor and chair of my committee for her invaluable patience and feedback. I also could not have undertaken this journey without my defense committee, who generously provided knowledge and expertise. Additionally, this endeavor would not have been possible without the generous support from the MacArthur Foundation, who financed my research .

I am also grateful to my classmates and cohort members, especially my office mates, for their editing help, late-night feedback sessions, and moral support. Thanks should also go to the librarians, research assistants, and study participants from the university, who impacted and inspired me.

Lastly, I would be remiss in not mentioning my family, especially my parents, spouse, and children. Their belief in me has kept my spirits and motivation high during this process. I would also like to thank my cat for all the entertainment and emotional support.

  • Write in first-person, professional language
  • Thank your professional contacts first
  • Include full names, titles, and roles of professional acknowledgements
  • Include personal or intangible supporters, like friends, family, or even pets
  • Mention funding bodies and what they funded
  • Appropriately anonymize or group research participants or non-individual acknowledgments

Don’t:

  • Use informal language or slang
  • Go over one page in length
  • Mention people who had only a peripheral or minor impact on your work

Acknowledgement for Assignment (6 Sampels with PDF)

Acknowledgement is a pivotal aspect of any assignment, showcasing gratitude towards those who have contributed to its completion. Acknowledgements are often overlooked or deemed unimportant, but they play a significant role in giving credit where it is due. Whether it be mentors, classmates, or even friends and family, everyone deserves recognition for their support and assistance during the assignment process.

Acknowledgement reflects the collaborative nature of learning and research. By acknowledging the help and guidance received, we not only show appreciation but also emphasize the importance of teamwork and community in achieving goals. It is a way to recognize the contributions of others and strengthen relationships within the academic community.

How to Write Acknowledgement for Assignment

Writing an acknowledgement for an assignment is a great way to express gratitude to those who have helped you along the way. Follow these steps to craft a perfect acknowledgement for your assignment.

  • The first step is to identify the people you want to acknowledge. This could be your professors, classmates, librarians, family members, or even authors of books or articles that were particularly helpful.
  • The purpose of an acknowledgement is to express gratitude and recognize the contributions of others to your work. It’s not about flattery, but about giving credit where it’s due.
  • Begin by jotting down all the people you want to thank and why. This will help you organize your thoughts and ensure you don’t miss anyone.
  • It’s crucial to spell the names of the people you’re acknowledging correctly. If you are unsure, double-check. For formal titles, use “Prof.” for professors, “Dr.” for doctors, and “Mr./Ms.” for others, followed by their last name.
  • Start with a brief introduction about the purpose of your acknowledgement. Then, thank each person or group separately. Be specific about their contributions. Example:

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to [Name and Title], whose guidance and support have been instrumental in the completion of this assignment. I am particularly grateful for [specific help or guidance they provided].”

  • The acknowledgement section is typically placed at the beginning of the assignment, after the title page and before the table of contents (if there is one).
  • proofread your acknowledgement for any grammatical errors or typos. It’s important to show the same level of professionalism in your acknowledgement as in the rest of your assignment.

Do and Don’ts

Do’s:

  • Do be sincere : Write from the heart and express genuine gratitude.
  • Do be specific : Mention specific instances of help or guidance that you received.
  • Do use formal language : Even though you’re expressing personal gratitude, maintain a professional tone.
  • Do proofread : Check for spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and punctuation.
  • Do respect privacy : If someone has helped you but prefers not to be acknowledged, respect their wishes.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t overdo it : Keep your acknowledgement concise and to the point.
  • Don’t forget anyone : Make sure to acknowledge all those who have contributed to your work.
  • Don’t use informal language or slang : Maintain a professional tone throughout.
  • Don’t make it about you : The focus should be on thanking others, not on your own achievements.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute : Write your acknowledgement with as much care and thought as the rest of your assignment. This will give you time to reflect on who has helped you and how.

Can You Define an Acknowledgement in an Academic Paper?

An acknowledgement is a crucial part of any college paper, research project, or dissertation. Students get the chance to express their appreciation to the academic advisors and other individuals who helped make the research effort feasible. Even though it could appear rather simple to write, it's important to give it careful thought and arrange the people listed according to their significance and the impact they have had. Most college papers urge you to express your gratitude concisely. Developing your writing skills, maintaining an official tone, and avoiding being overly sentimental (unless applicable).

As you write this section of your research paper, keep in mind that you are permitted to utilize personal pronouns because they are always referenced in this area. Except in personal reflective research, where the use of personal pronouns is permitted, the remainder of your work should avoid using them. Consult an academic advisor first if you are unsure of the writing style. Think again before you begin and omit those who have not contributed to your work from your list of persons to mention when you already know your subject and them. If the circumstance permits, start by bringing up your family or a high school teacher. In the majority of cases, you may include:

  • Academic supervisor.
  • Secondary supervisor.
  • Academic helpers in your university department.
  • Technical staff.
  • Academic advisors from other university departments.
  • Relevant institutions, organizations, or charity organizations.
  • Former students.
  • Family members and friends.

When Should Acknowledgements Be Used?

While there are no strict rules that must be used regarding academic acknowledgements, these are mostly used when you are planning to start a final year project or work on a dissertation. In terms of structure, as you write an acknowledgement letter, this section must be placed right after your Table of Contents section. As for the length, there are no strict guidelines in this regard and no minimum length, yet it is recommended to avoid going beyond one page. You can sort your mentions in an outline before adding them to your final paper to calculate an approximate length.

Regarding when to use acknowledgements, most educators recommend focusing on the objectives that you would like to achieve and seeing how you can support your argument by turning to authorities, the academic community, or individuals that are well-respected. At the same time, when you are working on a social project, you may thank your parents and educators who have contributed to your personality. It is also necessary to consider specific references and mentions that will help your target audience see the list of individuals you may have consulted or worked with to achieve academic success and clarity of your ideas. It should work exactly the same way as composing an assignment abstract, where you consider various ideas and take notes before shaping things. Since this section of your research can be edited later, most academic specialists recommend finishing your work first and then making a list of those people who have helped you by taking relevant notes.

Types of Acknowledgements

When you are trying to determine what type of academic assignment you might require, consider an evaluation to see if you only need a simple thank-you acknowledgement to mention your primary academic helper or would like to point out that you have taken an interdisciplinary approach and researched your subject by turning to several university departments. It is an important point to consider! In addition to the general “thank you” type of writing, there are also:

  • Scientific Journal Acknowledgements.  It means that you should thank the publishers and mention your academic advisor/college professor as a way to show the person behind your academic success.
  • Public Research Projects Gratitude . Public research requires mentioning your community, university, state, or the list of countries if it is a global project.
  • Personal (Reflective) Acknowledgement.  This type of acknowledgement is where you can mention your family and people that have influenced you.
  • Sponsorship / Academic Grant Acknowledgement.  If you are working on a grant, you may mention the sponsors that have contributed to your work financially.

Focus on the type of your research to see what contributions might be most applicable, based on your case. There may be thesis help that has been provided, or you may have worked with the support staff on a complex laboratory project. It all depends on the situation, yet when you are working on a dissertation, the list of important contributors should be there as an obligatory section. It shows what type of work has been done and who has helped to make the research outcome possible by guiding you.

How to Write an Acknowledgement for College

When you want to write an acknowledgement page, it is essential to take the following steps to keep things narrowed down:

Step 1:  Use an appropriate tone. Depending on whether you want to thank a college professor in a typical term paper or a dissertation, your writing form may be different. You may have to mention the challenges of a technical project and explain what kind of contributions have been made. Keep your tone professional!

For example:  “I would like to thank for the laboratory equipment assistance to Dr. Jones, whose experience and patience have helped me to avoid delays”.

Step 2:  Start with the list of important teachers and individuals who have been paramount to your research. Explain why.

Step 3:  Mention other helpers, depending on your type of work, institution, organizations, etc.

Step 4:  Talk about the grants and financial help you have received.

Step 5:  If applicable, the next section should be more personal and friendly.

For example:  “I would like to thank my family and friends for their constant support, listening to my drafts, and helping me to go through the challenges”.

Step 6:  You may consider a special speech that should be around 3-4 minutes. Remember that your acknowledgement text should be around 100-150 words (no more than one page).

Step 7:  Proofread and edit your acknowledgement.

When you brainstorm the list of people and funds to include in your acknowledgement, it is also recommended to start by looking through your executive summary for assignment. It is where most students have to mention those people, sources, or organizations that have helped them achieve success. When you are in doubt regarding this section, talk to your academic advisor and see what mentions are applicable based on your particular case.

A well-written acknowledgement can show your gratitude, build relationships, and reflect well on you and your work. When crafting your acknowledgment, be specific, mentioning names and detailing their impact.

Sociology IGNOU

A guide for Sociology students

Assignment Format – IGNOU

Presenting your assignment is as much important as writing quality answers. You can use “A4 sheets” or “Foolscap papers” to write IGNOU assignments. Take a look at the following steps to get an idea on assignments submission.

You should attach question paper to assignment.

Write your details and the assignment details. You can write in this sequence – Enrollment no., Name, Address, Course Code, Course Title, Assignment No., Study Centre , and finally Date of submission .

Sheet 3 & Onwards :-

You can write answers on both sides of the paper. Some students write just question number while writing the answers. You can follow like that. But, it’s always a best practice to write the question along with its number in the question paper. So that there is no need for evaluator to turn the pages to check the question that corresponds to the question number. Less irritation to evaluator means more marks for you. 😉

Submitting the assignments :-

Finally tie the loose papers with treasury tag. I couldn’t find free image of treasury tag online. To avoid copyright issues, I’m not uploading the image here. You can check this link to see how the treasury tag looks like.

Make separate bundle for each assignment. That means MSO-001 assignment bundle, MSO-002 assignment bundle etc.

Final Step :-

You can submit assignments by post or in hand at your Study Center. Do not forget to receive Acknowledgement slip.  In general, while submitting exam fee, they will ask you to show acknowledgement slip to make sure assignments are submitted. Even if you pay the exam fee online, it’s always safe side to keep your acknowledgement slip with you till your course is over.

Good Luck with your assignments. 🙂

After finishing with the course, if you are attending Group Discussion round as a process of your job hunt, Group Discussion Ideas will help you in your preparation.
