Before you interview, it's essential to draft a great cover letter that shows off your skills and what you'll bring to the job. We'll help you write one that'll catch any hotel employer's eye, from researching the hotel to opening and closing your letter.

How do you write an application letter for a hotel job?

  • Start your letter with your contact information. Then, introduce yourself and say why you want to work at the hotel.
  • Include any relevant skills or experience from your resume in your cover letter, emphasizing those found in the job description.
  • Close the letter by thanking the hiring staff for their time, and reiterating your enthusiasm for the position.

  • What the hotel will require will vary by position. For instance, if you're at the front desk, you'll need good people skills, as well as good organizations skills. If you're in housekeeping, you'll need good time management skills.

Step 4 Research the hotel.

  • Another way you can research the hotel is to walk around the hotel. Try to observe the employees in the department you'll be working and watch how they interact with each other. Step 1 Begin with your header and contact information.

  • Your date should look like the following example: December 3, 2015

Step 3 Add the company's contact information.

  • As an example, you could write, "My name is Joe Jeffries, and I heard about this front desk position on Indeed.com. I'm excited to be applying for it, as I have read how much Rattle Hotels values customer service and I am a people-person who loves putting the customer first."
  • This paragraph, as well as the last paragraph, are good places to include bits of information connected to what you found out about the culture. For instance, if you noticed that the people working at the hotel are close-knit, you could write, "I can see your hotel values its employees, as well, and I look forward to working with this great group of people."

Step 2 Lay out your skills to show your relevancy.

  • For instance, maybe you've noted that one of the required skills is interpersonal skills. You could write, "In the past, I've worked with many different types of people at a variety of retail jobs, which helped to develop my interpersonal skills. I learned to stay calm when dealing with stressful situations by taking a deep breath and thinking about the best possible solution to the problem, which I think will be a huge asset when working the front desk at Rattle Hotel."

Step 3 Include the keywords.

  • As an example, you could write, "I have noticed that you encourage a professional culture, and my experience as a front desk clerk in Regalia Hotels has given me the needed experience to be the professional you need at the front desk. I would be a good fit for your hotel, and I request that you give me the chance to prove that in person at an interview."

Step 2 Thank the person for his or her time.

The letter you draft in conjunction with your job application should demonstrate that you're articulate, knowledgeable and have the ability to be engaging with customers and staff.

Introduce Yourself

The opening of your letter should both introduce you and demonstrate your enthusiasm for the potential of working with the hotel or restaurant. You want to sound knowledgeable and genuine in your approach. Example:

I'm delighted to submit my application for the role of manager of the Elegant Hotel Company. My family has been a patron of this wonderful establishment for more than 30 years, and I'm enamored at the prospect of building on the legacy and reputation of a business I have such fond personal memories of.

Outline Your Qualifications

While you should lead with and emphasize your specific experience in the hotel or restaurant management industries, other areas to focus on include customer service, employee and vendor relations and event planning. Example:

In addition to the eight years I spent managing The Fine Dining restaurant in New York City, I also have substantial experience in catering and event planning, having worked my way through college for a major convention planning company. I pride myself on providing exceptional degrees of customer service, and I place high value on creating the best possible working relationships with my staffers.

If you have specific education, experience or training related to the industry, make note of that as well. This is especially important if the job description asks for specific skill sets.

Showcase Your Personality

Hotel and restaurant hospitality is all about creating a memorable experience for customers, so make sure your application letter showcases your personality. Example:

I’m a big believer in creating enjoyable experiences for every guest. It’s my job to ensure every person not only has everything they want or need during their stay, I want them to feel catered to and appreciated. This attitude is something I try to weave through every element of my management role.

Conclude your letter by referencing any attachments, such as resume, letters of recommendation or even industry awards you won yourself or on behalf of previous employers. Finish with a call to action, such as requesting an interview or noting some other type of next step. Example:

Attached, please find my resume, a copy of the International Hotel Association Customer Service Excellence award I received in 2016 and three letters of recommendation from past employers.   • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

After you have greeted the recruiter, it’s important to state the job you are applying to.

Recruiters are often managing multiple vacancies, so they need to know exactly which job you are referring to.

Be as specific as possible and use a reference number if you can find one.

This was the question posed to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as he visited Warwickshire today, as speculation mounts about when the election could be.

He did not rule out the idea of a summer election, and has previously said it was his "working assumption" that the UK will go to the polls in the second half of the year.

Refusing to be drawn on when an election would be called, Mr Sunak laughed and said: "I spoke about this last week (referring to him ruling out the election being in May) and many times before.

"What matters is the choice at that election - the substance."

The prime minister then repeated his "our plan is working" mantra, and pointed to measures announced in the budget like the national insurance cut and an increase to the state pension.

He said Channel crossings and NHS waiting lists were also coming down.

He added: "If we stick with that plan I can deliver a brighter future for everyone in our country. 

"That's the choice at the election and that's what we will deliver."

Many in Westminster still don't expect an election until October or November.

Sadiq Khan has suggested he is "partial" to Diane Abbott having the Labour whip reinstated.

The London mayor told reporters he had not spoken with Sir Keir Starmer about the Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP returning to the party, despite the Labour leader joining him at the launch of his campaign for re-election today.

Mr Khan said he had "cheered when he was a 16-year-old boy" when Ms Abbott was elected, describing her as having been a "fighter against racial injustice and social injustice".

"The problem is if I say publicly what should happen, my concern is that will influence what the complaints process does," he said.

Asked whether his preference for Ms Abbott having the whip reinstated was what was holding him back, he said: "Listen, I'm partial. That's why I'm the wrong person to talk about this."

Ms Abbott was suspended by Labour last April after suggesting Jews don't face racism ( read more ).

The comments were widely criticised as antisemitic and Mr Khan said it was right that she was punished for them.

Mr Khan's remarks come after crowds of people gathered outside the Home Office to show support for Ms Abbott, who was the subject of racist comments reportedly made by a major Tory donor ( read more ).

Artist Banksy has confirmed he is the creator of a large green mural of a tree with apparent environmental overtones which appeared in north London over the weekend.

Residents said they woke up on Sunday to the massive mural on the side of a block of flats in Hornsey Road near Finsbury Park.

Jeremy Corbyn, the MP for Islington North, today visited the new artwork, dubbing it "wonderful".

He said: "Banksy has come to Islington! 

"What wonderful artwork, proving there is hope for our natural world everywhere."

Last week, the US moved a step closer to an outright TikTok ban after politicians backed legislation that would see it forced out unless its Chinese owner - ByteDance - sold it off.

The House of Representatives voted in favour of the plan, and now it heads for the Senate.

It's one of the few issues that has support among both Democrats and Republicans and Joe Biden has indicated he's in favour, too.

So could the same thing happen in the UK? Many of the concerns around user privacy and the Chinese government being able to exert influence over the app's owner exist in Westminster, too.

And this time last year, the app was banned from government devices.

The prime minister's spokesperson has said the potential US ban is "a matter for US lawmakers", but said the UK government "keeps these things constantly under review".

They refused to say whether Rishi Sunak would support a ban.

Earlier this morning we brought you the news that Ofcom has taken issue with programmes presented by Tory MPs on GB News - and the broadcaster's response (see previous post).

The media watchdog found five episodes had broken impartiality rules, including two instalments of Jacob Rees-Mogg's State Of The Nation.

Our deputy political editor Sam Coates says it could be a sign that the regulator is about to "get a bit tougher" on the idea of serving politicians hosting their own TV shows.

Sam says: "Over the decades there have always been politicians appearing on programmes, and in some cases they have played minor roles hosting them.

"But with the arrival of GB News, there's been a big shift towards having serving politicians being paid large sums to do Ofcom-regulated TV work and host shows."

Sam says there has been pressure on Ofcom to look at this for a while, and today's ruling makes it clear it doesn't like the trend.

But there are no immediate sanctions, he notes.

Sam adds: "This is the regulator going to the next level to get a bit tougher on this issue - let's see whether it ends this practice or there's just another fight to be had."

We've just had some reaction from GB News to Ofcom's ruling against Tory MP presenters on their channel "acting as newsreaders" ( see 10.46 post ).

The broadcaster said it is "deeply concerned" about the ruling, and will meet with the media watchdog to raise concerns.

GB News added: "Ofcom is obliged by law to promote free speech and media plurality, and to ensure that alternative voices are heard.

"Its latest decisions, in some cases a year after the programme aired, contravene those duties.

"Extraordinarily, Ofcom has determined that a programme which it acknowledges was impartial and lacking in any expression of opinion, still somehow breaches its impartiality rules just because an imaginary viewer might think otherwise."

GB News claimed Ofcom has "arbitrarily changed the test" and this ruling was a "chilling development for all broadcasters, for freedom of speech, and for everyone in the United Kingdom".

It said it "takes its obligations very seriously" and is committed to having politicians as presenters on the channel.

Our deputy political editor Sam Coates has described this morning's business-centric speech by the prime minister as "slightly odd".

At just over seven minutes, Sam suggests it hardly met the criteria of a "big speech on the economy" that Downing Street had said it would be.

Sam says the speech's length speaks the key problem the PM has in making any big addresses at the moment - "a lack of coherent narrative".

It's not helped by his rhetoric on the economy not quite matching reality.

With the UK still in a technical recession, Sam says it's "quite a hard argument to make" that things are looking up - as the PM tried to do by pointing to growth being higher than expected.

"You do have to slightly check your change when you're listening to the prime minister and his claims about the economy," he adds.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has insisted "all Conservatives are united in wanting to deliver a brighter future" for Britain.

It comes following reports that some Tory MPs want to oust him before the general election, expected in the autumn.

Asked during a visit to the West Midlands why he did not let one of his "disloyal colleagues" have the "poisoned chalice" of being prime minister, Mr Sunak said: "I'm not interested in all Westminster politics. 

"It doesn't matter. What matters is the future of our country. 

"And that's what I am squarely focused on."

Mr Sunak said he was determined to measures like tax cuts, increasing the state pension, and - as outlined in his speech this morning  - increasing the number of apprenticeships and helping small businesses.

"Those are the things that matter to people," he added. "And as we have seen over the last few weeks, our plan is working. 

"Inflation is coming down, wages are growing, and the economy is back to growing again."

One year ago, Rishi Sunak made five pledges for voters to judge him on.

The prime minister met his pledge to halve inflation by the end of 2023, leaving four pledges outstanding.

However, he is faring less well with his other pledges.

It has been confirmed the UK is now in recession, which means the PM's pledge to grow the economy is not being met.
