I have noticed that tourism and hospitality are closely-related areas of an economic and social phenomenon that have developed a critical role in the world economy. The industry has become one of the major players in international commerce, and represents at the same time one of the main income sources for many developing countries with economic and employment benefits. The profession is not only profit oriented but also interesting and full of colourful funs and challenges. I am highly impressed with the growth of the industry and the prospects of careers development in the sector – a master degree in International Tourism and Hospitality Management can prepare me for this.

I think, from the course, I will develop a critical capacity for understanding knowledge and being able to act upon it, and I will develop the positive and proactive attitudes of management that are necessary in the international tourism and hospitality industry. In fact this course emphasises the development and enhancement of transferable intellectual and study skills that are highly relevant to contemporary business and management careers in this booming industry.

From the course, I expect to learn in-depth knowledge of modern approaches to Tourism and Hospitality business and management, an understanding of the relationship between people & Tourist, organisations, and business and management in different organisational structures, published modern financial techniques,  an understanding of the central importance of innovation in a range of different Tourism and Hospitality organisational contexts – entrepreneurial start-up firms, large business corporations, an understanding of the broader social context of the Tourism and Hospitality world, and the opportunity to assess my own personal development needs to help me focus my career in the Tourism and Hospitality field.

Prior to my current visa, I studied a general MBA - this study has enabled me gaining typical knowledge in general business administration. These were purely theoretical common knowledge combining bit of everything. Today’s businesses are more tailored and personalised. Managers in the ever competitive global arena are now specialising in different segments of industry and then within functional areas of organisations and departments. General MBA occasionally does not attract head-hunters attentions. I have felt this every moment of my PSW visa while looking to build a career and ended up realising that I must gain expertise in area that has individual identity rather than a generic name, and after thorough research I have found Tourism and Hospitality Management is the area where my heart responds and mind concentrates to match my academic tastes.

To me studying tourism & hospitality is about trying to understand the problems and opportunities raised by developing and operating a major sector of the economy that has major effects on the destinations themselves. The philosophy underlying the Tourism and Hospitality Scheme is that of the contextualised management degree. These contextual matters primarily include strategic tourism and hospitality management, international marketing, human resource management, financial management for the hospitality industry, social issues, political issues, environmental issues, global issues, and a range of specialist areas of interest to the sector (sport, event management, environment and hotel management).

In this MSc at the University of Bedfordshire, I will be expected to be able to read about, understand, and articulate a very wide range of academic and industry sources, case studies and resources. In the University of Bedfordshire This MSc is one of the most robust, challenging, relevant and industry-focused of its kind in the UK. The course is underpinned by world-leading research and experts from several disciplinary departments within the University; real-life industry case studies and examples; draws on an impressive range of specialist and more generalist core and optional units; builds on a very popular and successful portfolio of tourism Masters awards; and equips students with the skills, knowledge and experience to ensure they can confidently embark (and develop) a career in tourism and/or hospitality management. And this marks the difference between my MBA and this MSc – the MSc would equip me with applied and technical knowledge along with vocational skills and professionalism. This would develop and enhance my ability and skills while earn significant progressions in knowledge and potential successful career.

It is not hard to see that my past studies in the areas of business and management including my MBA would have positive and close impact and effects to complement knowledge of the this MSc programme. Due to the similarities of the business and management part of this MSc with my previous studies, in particular the most recently completed MBA, I will have the advantages to transferring the related part of the knowledge to strengthen the understanding and performance. I aim to introduce new dimension in the class and contribute extra towards the research and practical attachment part of the course.

Hospitality is one of the fastest-growing, job-creating sectors in my home country, India and abroad, offering the opportunity of careers with rapid progression at management level in hotels, restaurants, pubs, clubs, bars, contract catering, hospitality services within other organisations or self-employed. The hospitality business is a worldwide industry, with many different working environments. There’s enormous scope for travel – from working at a ski resort in Canada to cruising in the Caribbean.

On the other hand, Tourism provides a wide range of job opportunities, including: tourism marketing officer; tour leader/trek leader; travel consultant; travel agency manager; tour operator resort representative; tour operator product manager; tour operator contracts manager; tour operator product development co-ordinator; tourist information centre manager; events manager or sales executive; attractions sales and marketing administrator; public relations officer; hotel marketing executive; arts administrator; conference organiser; lifestyle consultant; magazine journalist; FE college lecturer; catering manager; retail manager; Human Resources/Training officer; passenger service agents; airline and airport management; ferry or cruise manager and many others.

Therefore, there would a whole range of career opportunities for me once I qualify with this life-changing course that offers practical life-skills for the industry along with industry related contemporary knowledge. I do not see a better place to study this course other than University of Bedfordshire that are so down to the industry and demands of the sector.

The idea of pursuing a career within the tourist sector has really appealed to me and fired my imagination ever since I completed a BTEC in Travel and Tourism. I found the course very rewarding because it made it opened my mind to the fact that working in tourism offers an unparalleled chance to combine together two subjects that have always been of great interest to me: business and travel. The idea of running a business speaks to my very hands-on approach to life and my love of problem solving, and through completing the BTEC I discovered that the tourist sector offers a wealth of managerial opportunities to people with the right skills, yet unlike many other industries the product on offer–travel and vacations–is one that cannot fail to be exciting. I am now relishing the possibility of being able to return to being involved in this area academically through studying it at university in preparation for a career in the sector.

I have always believed in the value of preparation when attempting to achieve goals. For this reason I decided to take a gap year, during which time I have been completing further study and gaining professional work experience to prepare me for the demands of a degree in tourism. I am enjoying having the chance to improve my mathematics skills through completing the Key Skills Level 2 in mathematics. I have also been avidly studying travel publications aimed at those working in the industry and tourists themselves. Among my favourite publications are Destinations Travel Magazine, which has helped me to focus my mind on the marketing aspects of tourism and concepts such as different target markets, and National Geographic Traveller, whose thoughtful articles have prompted me to think about some of the conceptual aspects of the industry, such as the differences between inquisitive and acquisitive travel.

However, gaining work experience in the travel industry has been the most rewarding part of my gap year so far. Since September I have been working for a specialist travel agent that offers tailor-made holiday experiences. I am responsible for the company’s destination research and web content, with these two areas requiring me to carried out detailed research on different worldwide destinations and turn that research into engaging web content designed to attract and inspire potential holidaymakers who are looking for a more original and authentic holiday experience. The work has made me more interested in the marketing aspects of the tourism sector and has focused my mind on issues such as what motivates different people to travel and how different holiday experiences can be presented.

As part of my work I attended the World Travel Market event, an experience that helped me to gain insight into the economic importance that different countries attach to their tourist sectors and the techniques they attempt to use to differentiate their tourist experience from the competition. During the event I also attended several different business meetings on behalf of my company, through which I came to be aware of the many different types of organisations that collectively make up the industry. I also enjoyed these meetings because it gave me a chance to put into practice the negotiating and communicating skills I gained at school through serving as a member of the sixth-form council. Overall the work experience I have completed so far has really made me appreciate the breadth of subjects that tourism encompasses, from economics and the environment to management and marketing, and this has in turn given me cause to look forward to the multi-disciplinary content of a tourism degree.

As a passionate traveller with an endless enthusiasm for discovering new places, the tourism sector is undoubtedly the area in which I want to build a career, with the areas of destination management or marketing particularly appealing to me. I see a degree in tourism as the ideal first step in making this goal become a reality.

I have always been a keen traveller and from an early age I knew that I wanted a career that enabled me to be involved in the travel industry. At secondary school I enjoyed learning French and German and taught myself Spanish after a particularly exciting holiday to Barcelona.

The majority of my travels have been in Europe although I am planning a six week tour of America next summer. I also hope to explore Asia in the future, possibly by teaching English as a foreign language.

To help me achieve my career goals I studied Travel and Tourism at college by taking the AVCE Travel and Tourism course. This gave me the chance to put my love of travel into an industry context and develop my knowledge of the business aspects of travel and tourism.

I have always been business minded and my course taught me the valuable leadership and organisational skills I will need to succeed in this highly competitive industry.

As well as completing written work for the course I also had to take part in practical exercises, such as organising a competition with school children based around a local tourist attractive.

Another aspect of the course was taking part in a two week work placement and for this I was lucky enough to secure a place at the Tower of London. During this time I acted as a tour guide, showed the Events Department, and got to work with the Marketing Department on a future exhibition.

When I am not fulfilling my academic responsibilities I like to keep fit, particularly by running. I am a Committee Member for my local running club and regularly organise both competitive and fun running events.

I am also a keen cook and enjoy trying recipes from other parts of the world.

I hope that my strong organisational and team work skills will make me a valuable and useful member of my course. After graduation I hope to spend some more time abroad and then take up a role within the travel and tourism industry.

How to Write a Strong Personal Statement

A few adjustments can get your application noticed.

Whether applying for a summer internship, a professional development opportunity, such as a Fulbright, an executive MBA program, or a senior leadership development course, a personal statement threads the ideas of your CV, and is longer and has a different tone and purpose than a traditional cover letter. A few adjustments to your personal statement can get your application noticed by the reviewer.

  • Make sure you’re writing what they want to hear. Most organizations that offer a fellowship or internship are using the experience as a pipeline: It’s smart to spend 10 weeks and $15,000 on someone before committing five years and $300,000. Rarely are the organizations being charitable or altruistic, so align your stated goals with theirs
  • Know when to bury the lead, and when to get to the point. It’s hard to paint a picture and explain your motivations in 200 words, but if you have two pages, give the reader a story arc or ease into your point by setting the scene.
  • Recognize that the reviewer will be reading your statement subjectively, meaning you’re being assessed on unknowable criteria. Most people on evaluation committees are reading for whether or not you’re interesting. Stated differently, do they want to go out to dinner with you to hear more? Write it so that the person reading it wants to hear more.
  • Address the elephant in the room (if there is one). Maybe your grades weren’t great in core courses, or perhaps you’ve never worked in the field you’re applying to. Make sure to address the deficiency rather than hoping the reader ignores it because they won’t. A few sentences suffice. Deficiencies do not need to be the cornerstone of the application.

At multiple points in your life, you will need to take action to transition from where you are to where you want to be. This process is layered and time-consuming, and getting yourself to stand out among the masses is an arduous but not impossible task. Having a polished resume that explains what you’ve done is the common first step. But, when an application asks for it, a personal statement can add color and depth to your list of accomplishments. It moves you from a one-dimensional indistinguishable candidate to someone with drive, interest, and nuance.

This GBS course will provide you with opportunities to test your knowledge and understanding through informal formative assessments. Formative assessments will be completed before your formal summative assessment, which will determine your final marks.

Each module normally contains at least one piece of formative assessment from which you will receive feedback from your course team. Formative assessments are purely for developmental purposes and do not count towards your final module mark. They are designed to help you to gain more knowledge and confidence in the module material and approaches to formal assessment. Students who do not engage with informal assessments often struggle with Foundation Year progression, as well as with the academic levels above.

The formal summative assessment usually occurs towards the end of each module. Assessment methods may include written examinations and a range of coursework, including reports, portfolios, essays, and presentations. The marks awarded for summative assessments count towards your final module mark. Assessment methods at GBS are reviewed annually and may be updated in consultation with students, for example in response to student or External Examiner feedback. An External Examiner is an independent academic expert from another higher education provider, and they are appointed by Canterbury Christ Church University to provide external assurance regarding the academic standards of your course.

Standard Entry Requirements (Under 21 years old) Minimum 80 UCAS tariff points or 60 Credit Ofqual qualification at level 3.

  If applicants aged 21+ do not meet the standard entry requirements, we will also consider those with life/work skills which would make them suitable for undergraduate study with our Foundation programme.

Funding your study You can apply for help with your fees from the government by visiting gov.uk/studentfinance . This could take the form of a Tuition Fee Loan, Maintenance Loan or Maintenance Grant.

A Tuition Fee Loan will cover the cost of your up-front fees and will be paid to your university or college. The Loan must be repaid once you have finished your course and are earning £26,575 a year or more. Both full and part-time learners can apply.

If you are eligible, you can apply for a Maintenance Loan too. The Loan is paid directly into your bank account at the start of term. The loan repayments only start once you leave your course and when your earnings are more than £26,575. For more information, please visit Student Finance.

Maintenance Grants are paid into your bank account at the start of term. You don’t have to pay it back, but any funds you get will reduce the amount of Maintenance Loan you are eligible for.

Dear Fellow Stockholder:

At Xperi Inc.’s (“Xperi” or the “Company”) upcoming 2024 Annual Meeting of Stockholders, which is scheduled to be held on May 24, 2024, you will be presented with a choice: maintain the status quo of underperformance by voting for an incumbent Board of Directors (the “Board”) which has overseen years of stockholder value destruction, or elect to the Board two new directors with the perspectives, skills and expertise to help set Xperi on a trajectory of sustained growth and profitability. As a large, long-term Xperi stockholder who, like you, has seen the value of our investment deteriorate, we urge you to choose the latter by voting FOR our director nominees – Thomas A. Lacey and Deborah S. Conrad – on the enclosed WHITE proxy card today.

RUBRIC IS ALIGNED WITH YOU AND HAS A PLAN FOR CHANGE

Rubric Capital Management LP (“Rubric”) manages funds and accounts which collectively own approximately 9.0% of Xperi’s common stock, making us the Company’s third largest stockholder. We have been stockholders of Xperi since its spin-off from its predecessor company on October 1, 2022, and we were stockholders of Xperi’s predecessor company since 2017.

We invested in the Company due to its attractive portfolio of innovative enablement technologies and our firm belief in their significant monetization potential. Unfortunately, from our perspective, this potential has been squandered under the oversight of the current Board, and stockholders have paid the price.

We take no pleasure in publicly criticizing companies or directors and prefer to spend our time working collaboratively with the boards and management teams of our portfolio companies to help drive sustained value. We have taken this same constructive approach to our engagement with Xperi’s Board and management team across the duration of our investment. Unfortunately, in our view, this Board has shown that it is more focused on granting excessive compensation to executives than it is engaging with stockholders to improve the Company’s performance. Simply put, the direction of the Company is untenable, and we believe meaningful change is required in the boardroom to ensure stockholder value is not eroded further.

Rubric has a clear roadmap for change and value creation that benefits all stakeholders. We have identified two highly qualified, independent director candidates – Thomas A. Lacey and Deborah S. Conrad – with the leadership experience, marketing knowledge, and financial and corporate strategy expertise that is urgently needed to stem the tide of losses at Xperi and drive long-term stockholder value. We are confident that Mr. Lacey and Ms. Conrad will act as dedicated advocates for the interests of ALL Xperi stockholders, and will work tirelessly to address the poor operational performance, egregious insider compensation and reckless capital allocation practices that we believe have continued to plague the Company.

XPERI AND THE CURRENT BOARD HAVE A HISTORY OF UNDERPERFORMANCE

Underperformance has been idiomatic to Xperi throughout its life as a standalone company – and earlier. Since the completion of Xperi’s spin-off, the Company’s shares have materially underperformed any comparable benchmark, declining by approximately 28% . During this same period, the S&P Software Index (GICS: 451030) had a total return of approximately 74% and the Russell 3000 returned approximately 42%. 1

While this underperformance is alarming, the duration of measurement is too short to warrant censure on its own. Xperi’s former parent company, Xperi Holding Corporation (“Xperi Holding”) (n/k/a Adeia Inc. (“Adeia”)), which shared all but one director from the Company’s current Board, similarly underperformed comparable benchmarks on both an absolute and relative basis. Xperi Holding shares were down approximately 27% on a trailing 3-year total return basis coming into the spin-off, underperforming the Russell 3000 by 52% and the S&P Software Index (GICS: 451030) by 81%. 2

Contrast this with the performance of Xperi’s predecessor company under Rubric director nominee Thomas A. Lacey, who served as CEO of the business from 2013 to 2017 and oversaw stockholder returns that were double the rate of the Russell 3000 (21% vs 10% CAGR), 3 and it becomes clear to us what – or who – is responsible for the destruction of stockholder value.

XPERI’S POOR MARGINS HAVE LED TO UNACCEPTABLE UNDERPERFORMANCE

Xperi’s margin performance has been similarly underwhelming when compared to peers, and points to an excessive expense structure that desperately needs to be addressed in order to unlock stockholder value.

The facts speak for themselves. Despite operating at a similar revenue scale to, and having higher gross margins than, its Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. (“ISS”) peer group, 4 Xperi’s LTM Adjusted EBITDA margins are ~1,700 basis points below peers . 5

To put Xperi’s level of operational underperformance in context for stockholders, simply achieving peer margins (which are within the target ranges Xperi provided at its 2022 Analyst Day), and valued using a median 2024 peer group multiple of 11.0x EBITDA, Xperi would be worth approximately $29 per share , representing an increase of approximately 170% over its current price . 6

XPERI’S BOARD SEEMINGLY REWARDS INSIDERS TO THE DISADVANTAGE OF STOCKHOLDERS

To make matters worse, Xperi has instituted a compensation program that seemingly rewards insiders to the disadvantage of stockholders. In 2023, the Company issued over 4.2 million RSUs to insiders (approximately 76% of which are not subject to any performance-based vesting), representing approximately 9% of the Company’s diluted share count, and recognized a stock-based compensation expense of approximately $70 million . 7 This dilution occurred while Xperi grew revenue by only 4% in 2023, and reduced the midpoint of its EBITDA guidance in the third quarter.

To drive this point home, during 2023, Xperi’s former parent, Adeia, which has over twice as many shares outstanding and twice the market capitalization of Xperi, issued only 2.9 million RSUs, or approximately a 2.7% dilution, less than 33% of that experienced by Xperi stockholders. 8 Adeia’s stock-based compensation expense was only roughly $18 million for the full year (nearly $52 million less than Xperi). 9

Unsurprisingly, Xperi’s stock-based compensation expense is similarly bloated when compared to its ISS peer group. 10

The fact that this Board deems such an unsustainable and misaligned compensation scheme appropriate, despite Xperi’s staggeringly poor returns, is, in our view, indefensible. It is for this reason that we are seeking to replace two of the three members of the Board’s Compensation Committee – Darcy Antonellis and David C. Habiger – with new independent directors who are committed to prioritizing the best interests of stockholders.

WE BELIEVE XPERI’S RECKLESS CAPITAL ALLOCATION HIGHLIGHTS THE BOARD’S POOR DECISION MAKING AND THREATENS THE PRESERVATION OF STOCKHOLDER VALUE

We have watched and grown increasingly concerned about the capital allocation decisions being made at Xperi. These concerns began when Xperi’s former parent disclosed the existence of its investment in Perceive Corporation (“Perceive”) in 2020. Unbeknownst to stockholders, Xperi’s former parent had been spending upwards of $20 million per year to incubate an AI startup, apparently without regard to cost of capital. At the time (and many times since), we recommended that the Company (and its former parent) sell a partial stake in Perceive in order to provide investors with a metric by which to value Perceive’s potential, while derisking some of the financial drag. Despite those repeatedly stated concerns, it was not until February 28, 2024 that the Company announced that it had hired Centerview Partners LLC to finally conduct a strategic review for Perceive.

Moreover, in December 2023, the Company announced that it agreed to sell its AutoSense division to Tobii AB (“Tobii”) for approximately $42.7 million. Despite what we believe to be a long runway of potential growth driven by regulatory changes requiring additional in-cabin monitoring, Xperi elected to divest this business for zero upfront consideration , instead accepting a $27.7 million promissory note paid in three tranches starting in 2027, and $15 million in future cash payments made over four years starting in 2028. 11 In other words, Xperi sold a business it incubated and understands well, and instead became the primary creditor to Tobii, a company that has had negative operating profit in 10 of the last 11 quarters and currently has an enterprise value of approximately $35 million. 12

These actions are, in our view, emblematic of the Board’s repeated poor decision making and capital mismanagement, which we fear are a grave threat to the preservation of stockholder value.

RUBRIC’S NOMINEES BRING THE EXPERIENCE AND OVERSIGHT REQUIRED IN XPERI’S BOARDROOM

It is apparent that Xperi’s Board as currently constituted cannot be trusted to effectively lead the Company forward and create value for stockholders. Accordingly, we have nominated two highly qualified, independent directors – Thomas A. Lacey and Deborah S. Conrad – who will help bring the necessary rigor and skillset to improve the Board for the benefit of all stakeholders. Our nominees have proven track records of value creation and possess relevant operating and capital allocation expertise that we believe is needed to help Xperi reach its full potential.

If elected, our nominees are committed to working alongside the incumbent directors to:

  • Address the operational underperformance which has directly contributed to the Company’s declining stock price;
  • Design a compensation plan that is aligned with stockholders and truly pays for performance; and
  • Allocate capital in a more efficient and results-oriented manner.
