What are the disadvantages of using a computer?

Although there are many advantages to using a computer, there are also dangers and disadvantages (like most things in life). Computers pose several potential health concerns if not used properly. Below are many of the negative impacts of using digital technology and computers and what type of problems you may personally experience.

Carpal tunnel and eye strain

Carpal Tunnel wrist brace

A computer requires a lot of repetitive movement that often leads to carpal tunnel syndrome. For example, moving your hand from your keyboard to a mouse and typing are all repetitive and inflict injuries.

In addition to repetitive movements, staring at a bright screen for hours can cause a lot of eye strain and CVS (computer vision syndrome).

Taking breaks, keeping the proper posture , and understanding computer ergonomics help prevent or delay these injuries.

  • How to protect your eyes when using a computer.

Too much sitting

Too much of anything is bad, and too much sitting for a long time and becoming a mouse potato can lead to health problems. Also, substituting a traditional desk for a standing desk is not a perfect solution. Studies show that standing for long periods of time is not healthy but is better than sitting. The best solution is to take frequent breaks to move around, stretch, and exercise.

Short attention span and too much multitasking

With today's computers, computer devices, and the Internet, humans have become hooked on instant gratification. As you use a computer and the Internet and get immediate answers to your questions and requests, you become accustomed to getting that quick dopamine fix. You can become easily frustrated when something doesn't work or is not answered in a timely matter.

With a reduced attention span, it is also not uncommon to multitask more and work on more than one thing at the same time. Many studies show that multitasking is less productive, can cause more mistakes, and may even be bad for your brain.

Can limit learning and create a dependency

If you can remain focused, a computer with the Internet can be one of the greatest tools in history to learn about anything. It's also easy to become overly reliant on a computer and other electronic devices. For example, a spell checker is a great tool for finding spelling errors. However, if you never learn the proper spelling of a word and rely on a spell checker or autocorrect , you're more likely to make spelling errors.

Other tools like grammar checkers, GPS (Global Positioning System), and calculators are also extremely helpful. However, if you become too reliant on these tools, you may be helpless when they're not available.

Potential of loss of privacy

Anonymous individual using a laptop.

With computers storing so much personal information, it's at risk of getting into the hands of others. Once a malicious person has your information, they could access your online accounts or use identity theft to open other accounts, such as a new credit card under your name.

  • How to protect yourself while on the Internet.

Time sink and distractions

Although a computer can increase your productivity, it also can waste a lot of your time. For example, you could be trying to learn more about computers and see an interesting link on cooking spaghetti, spending a few minutes reading that page. Then, you read a page about the best pot to use, which leads to reading about healthy eating. Two hours later, you realize you never achieved your original goal.

Also, with the popularity of social networks and notifications, you can become easily distracted while you are trying to work.

Increases waste and impacts the environment

Pile of electronic waste.

With the speed that computers and other electronics get replaced, older devices get thrown away frequently. These disposed of electronics can significantly impact the environment and be a hazard to humans and other life if disposed of improperly.

  • Computer disposal and recycling information and help.

Can reduce jobs

As computers become smarter and more capable, they also replace the need for many jobs. In the future, it is also not inconceivable that computers can carry out any job.

  • What jobs are being taken over by robots and computers?

Trolls, abuse, stalking, and exploitation

Face of a troll figurine.

Anyone who has spent time on the Internet has encountered trolls or abusive people, intentionally inflicting pain and suffering on others. Unfortunately, with the anonymous nature of the Internet, it's easier to encounter these people.

With more people sharing information on the Internet, it is also easier for stalkers to find personal information about people and their family. They can also use online services to find information about people.

Finally, the Internet also makes it easier for those who prey on others to find people to exploit. For safety tips, see: How to protect yourself while on the Internet.

You could become anti-social or depressed

With all the possibilities available on a computer, it is easy to get obsessed to the point you become anti-social. For example, many online games (e.g., World of Warcraft ) are designed to be addictive, causing you to play the game more than being around others. Others may find online shopping so beneficial that they rarely go out to shop.

See our computer addiction page for further information about and help with computer addiction.

Social networks can also be an escape from the real world by socializing with friends and family over social networks, like Facebook . Many studies are showing social network sites can be depressing because they only show all the good, fun, and interesting things friends and family are doing. It can result in people believing that other people's lives and experiences are better than theirs.

They allow schools to maximize online resources, foster student engagement, and make it easier for teachers and students to perform school-related tasks. However, they may make students lazy to check mistakes, thinking that the computers will automatically check them. Ultimately, the pros outweigh the cons.

“As far as I concerned, computer is a great invention and it is useful to human life. It should be impossible to live without computer as we get too much used of computers nowadays. However, we should use it wisely. We know the fact that the more we rely on computer, the more we will lose in our life. So, we should also find ways to make our dependence on computers less dangerous to us, so that we will not rely on computer completely.”

Fox discusses the state of society today where we rely far too much on computers. They help us greatly in our daily lives, but they have made us depend on technology for information rather than thinking for ourselves. And if something goes wrong, like the servers crash, the world is at a standstill. Computers are a net good for society, but we must avoid revolving our lives around technology.

“In data science terms, this phase is somewhat akin to ‘Model Training’ — the more things a child is exposed to the more the synapses associated with it get built. A good example is language — the more a child is exposed to linguistics in early years, the more evolved the area of her brain that is associated with languages would get. Ditto for other cognitive and non-cognitive abilities.”

Prakash discusses the different ways in which our brains operate as computers. An information processing system has five components: input, output, storage, processing, and program. The human brain does have all of these components, which are used to perform our daily functions. She looks into how human intelligence can be “trained,” like computers are developed.

5. The Human Brain vs. Supercomputers… Which One Wins? By John Staughton

“When the brain identifies a more efficient or effective way to compute and function, it can morph and alter its physical and neuronal structure, hence the term “plasticity“. Until we achieve true Artificial Intelligence (in which computers should theoretically be able to re-wire themselves), neuroplasticity will always keep the human brain at least one step ahead of “static” supercomputers.”

Staughton writes about how much more advanced computers have become in recent decades, with some of them being able to outsmart humans in tasks such as chess. However, he explains that our brains are very different from technology and are inherently superior to even the most powerful computers in terms of efficiency, adaptability, and many other factors. However, he keeps the door on computers, eventually developing beyond our capabilities in the future.

There was a time when we had to do calculations and solve problems manually. Nowadays, a computer can do the same in a fraction of a second. Computers have now become a necessity in our lives. From learning about new things to making new friends, from students doing their school projects to multinational companies storing their employee data, these days everything is done on computers. Using computers has made work easier and faster.

However, computers do have some disadvantages. As computers are doing all the work, the need for human employees has reduced which has added to the problem of unemployment. Online hacking, fraud and cyber crimes have also increased. But if we take a few measures to keep ourselves safe, computers are indeed great!

Today, as the world is modernising, computers have become a necessity in our lives. Computers can process instructions and solve problems in just a fraction of a second. They can store a huge amount of data and thus, help banks, hospitals, government organisations as well as other companies to store all their data digitally which makes work a lot easier.

Computers also allow us to access the internet and connect with the world. Because of computers, we can now watch movies at home, order groceries, book cabs, buses, trains and flights, and send and receive money online. We can learn new things, make new friends and talk to different people using the internet.

However, computers do have some disadvantages. Because computers are so fast and versatile, the need for human employees has reduced which has led to the loss of jobs and added to the problem of unemployment. Online hacking, fraud and stealing of personal information have also become common as so much of our information is stored online.

A lot of people have also gotten addicted to playing games or binge-watching movies and shows on their computers. This is harmful to their health and can lead to physical issues in the long run. That’s why we must use computers in a way that is good for us and doesn’t cause us any harm.

Today, computers have become an important part of our lives. This machine has made many complicated tasks a lot easier and faster for people and organisations like banks, hospitals, post offices, government organisations as well as small and large companies.

Computers allow us to access the internet and connect with the world. Because of computers, we can now watch movies and dramas from all over the world while sitting at home. We can order groceries, and book cabs, buses, trains and flights online. We can also send and receive money via online banking without ever having to set foot in a bank.

Computers have also helped people learn new things which wouldn’t have been possible in an era when computers didn’t exist. One no longer needs to go to the library and search for books. Now, one can simply borrow a book from any online library as well as buy online copies of those books at a much cheaper price.

This has reduced the need for physical books and copies which in turn has reduced the need for paper production. Computers have also helped us connect with people from different parts of the world and make friends with them. It has helped us learn about different countries, cultures, and people and has helped us become more understanding and welcoming.

Computers have a lot of advantages but they do come with a few disadvantages as well. Because computers are so fast and versatile, the need for human employees has reduced which has led to the loss of jobs and added to the problem of unemployment. This problem is only going to escalate in the future as more and more advancements are made in the field of computer technology.

Online hacking, fraud and stealing of personal information have also become common as so much of our information is stored online. One wrong click and we can lose a lot of our hard-earned money. What’s worse is that such hackers and scammers target old and illiterate people who are not very familiar with the technology. Many youngsters today spend a lot of their time playing computer games or binge-watching shows full of negativity online. This affects their physical and mental health in the long run.

Nowadays, computers have become a necessity in our lives and we cannot deny that. And as is the case with everything else, computers do have their own advantages and disadvantages. We must be mindful and use computers in a way that is good for us and doesn’t cause us any harm.

I have adopted a simplistic approach to writing essays on the topic for a better understanding of all kinds of students. If you still have any doubts regarding this context, kindly let me know through the comment section below. Keep browsing our website for more such sessions.

Advantages and disadvantages of a computer

Computers have both advantages and disadvantages. This is a complete point by point essay in which we will read all the advantages and disadvantages of a computer, mainly in the field of technology and education. But before we move on to the advantages and disadvantages of a computer, we will read a little definition.

The word computer comes from the Latin word “computare”, which means to compute or programmable machine. A computer is an electronic device that receives information and processes its various commands in a software product and gives us a result.

The result is based on information provided by users. It is used to automatically execute arbitrary sequences of arithmetic and logical operations. He cannot do anything without programs. The computer has many advantages and disadvantages, let’s read them point by point.

Computer advantages

Medical departments.

A computer is not just a combination of a processor, monitor, mouse, and keyboard. Apparatus in medical and medical departments and hospitals, such as X-ray machines, pathology machines, electrocardiograph machines, transport monitors, blood gas machines and transport ventilators, etc.

, All these and thousands of other machines are computerized.

State bodies

In the list of advantages, the item comes in second place. The government of the country uses a computerized system in every department to keep records of people over time. These are the greatest benefits of a computer system to the world. Because we can easily find a person in the area using the issued conditional personality condition. And second, that it is very difficult to keep records of the entire country in books and registers.

essay disadvantages of computer

Proficient in: Computers

“ Amazing as always, gave her a week to finish a big assignment and came through way ahead of time. ”

Computers have many advantages and disadvantages, but we can get all the benefits of a computer in the education department. Computers are used very often in all areas of education. We can use it in schools to pay for student cards, photos, documents, scorecards, etc., and also use it for merit lists. … Students on the screen of your device solve their problems.

Job opportunities

Another important item on the list for the unemployed. Because unemployed people can easily find work on the Internet using a computer. For comparison: buy a newspaper from the market and search every page in all newspapers. You can easily specify a job according to your education and experience.

Computer sports

This essay isn’t just about the general benefits of a computer. For people who love sports, using the Internet, it is easy to find the score on the monitor screen or laptop screen.

You are free, no work and nothing bothers you. Let’s get on you (PC) and enjoy the fun of video games. Several games such as soccer, cricket, racing, arcades, brawls and video missions are more interesting and entertaining.

Presentation

Presentations play a big role in all areas to learn more about things. And learn something quickly and easily through a presentation. Power Point software is used to create presentations. These presentations can be for events, products, projects, etc.

Business Departments

The latest pros and cons of computer essay paragraphs relate to the use of computers in business departments. Every company in the world, small or large, should need at least one or two computers for documentation, employee records, online communication, and more.

Disadvantages of a computer

Environmental pollution.

Computers are not just about CPUs, monitors, mice and keyboards. Heavy machines, laptops, mobile phones, tablets, and many machines that work on command are called computers. In the manufacture of these machines and components, there are environmental pollution causes such as air pollution, water pollution and soil pollution. There are many of them too.

Data security

The second disadvantage and disadvantage of a PC is the insecurity of data on the hard drive. In the office, someone can steal your files in a minimum of time while you are away. Because the processors are very fast now and it doesn’t take time to transfer data to USB.

Reduce employment opportunities

On the one hand, the computer creates job opportunities, but on the other hand, it also reduces job opportunities. Because many machines today work automatically, work that used to be done by five or ten people now does this work machine alone with one command.

The word “virus” sounds good, but it kills your computer and can damage your files and data on your hard drive. A virus is the enemy of a PC, as soon as it enters the system, the number of viruses automatically increases daily, and in the end you will lose all important information and data.

Need a qualified person

There are no five points in “Disadvantages of a computer” – a qualified specialist is needed to solve each special problem. And a specialist in a specific software will charge a high salary. For example, design needs a graphic designer, an architect needs someone who can work in AutoCAD, and computerized accounting needs someone who can work in Peachtree or QuickBooks software.

Waste of time

Another disadvantage of a PC is a waste of time. People in offices use it for business or personal work. Because of this, other peoples have problems.

As we discussed above, misusing a computer is a waste of time, as well as a waste of money. People buy it for games, watching movies and music – a waste of money.

Short circuit

In case of any problem with the power cable, less or more power of electricity or more load on the computer may cause a short circuit or explosion. In such cases, you may lose data and files, and in other cases, you will have to lose your entire system.

Away from family

The biggest disadvantage of the computer system is that it is more often used for persuasion and play, as well as other abuses to keep people away from their families. The father cannot understand the children better, the husband cannot understand the wife, and many other relationships go far.

Automatic operation

This is the last point of “the advantages and disadvantages of computer technology in our life.” These are the most serious and dangerous moments, because some of the automatic operations and functions of computer software sometimes stop working for one reason or another, leading to death. For example, in an elevator, if the power goes out or the load is cut off, you can stop the elevator. Many other machines that have no sense of thinking operate only in teams.

Charles Babbage was the one who invented the first mechanical computer in 1837. But due to limited finance and other reasons he was not able to complete his work.

Later his son Henry Babbage completed his work and made it into a simplified version of the analytical engine’s computing unit.

Computer is one of the most important inventions of our age, we can say that is a wonderful gift of science to the humankind.

Today computers are found in almost every house and computers are getting more advanced as the demand for a better computer is increasing day by day.

A computer consists of a central processing unit (CPU), monitor, keyboard, printer, UPS and mouse. Between the years 1940 and 1945 when the first electronic digital computers were developed.

Initially the sizes of the computers were as big as a room and consumed a lot of power.

The main motive behind inventing a computer was to create a fast calculating machine having the capability to complete more than task in small amount of time. It is designed in such a way that it can do work of many human beings alone.

During the World War II, it was very important to calculate the speed of the enemy’s weapons and their location to defend them. And these calculations can be done only with the help of advanced machine as these calculations had to be done accurately and mathematically.

Firing tables are required by the soldiers so as to defend the enemy and only computer can produce such tables with speed and accuracy.

And to create such technology in that time was a huge task. It requires a lot of brain power and money. ENIAC was the first computer produced by the Moore School for the US Army in 1946. ENIAC was used to produce the firing tables for the US Army which helped them in defending their enemies.

As the time has passed computers are evolved and because of artificial intelligence we are using the most advanced form of computer that has helped the humankind in very sector of life.

Each time a lighter, speedier, smaller and more powerful computer is launched compared to its previous models. Today computers have conquered almost all walks of life and have been a dominating factor since 1970.

They are almost used in every sector like weather forecasting, machinery operations, spacecraft etc. Apart from this they also play a vital role in the medical sector as they can be used to store important information that can be referred later on.

We can play games on computer, book tickets through the internet .

Computers are necessary in printing newspaper and books. Traffic of the big cities are also controlled by the computers and the police use computers to keep a track of the criminals.

They are also by the MNC’s companies for maintaining their accounts, stocks, payroll and invoice etc. We can even shop online, pay our bills, video chat, email, messaging etc. anywhere around the world using computer.

Computer is considered as a large storage device and a big dictionary where we store huge amount of data like the photos, images, movies, songs, information, videos, audio, games and many more.

It also provides a wide variety of tools like the paint tool, snipping tool, calculator, notepad etc. which are very beneficial for us.

Many institutions, schools and colleges emphasize on computer education as it helps in enhancing the skills and learning through computer a bit easier and a lot of fun.

In higher education, there are subjects related to networking, hardware and software etc. so it would be great if the students are familiar to such things in their early stage of life.

There is nothing wrong in saying that it is the backbone of the Information Technology with the internet. But having said that it has also negatively affected the human lives because like a coin has two faces to it Heads and Tails, everything in this world has two sides to it good and bad and the same is with the computer.

The negative side includes the cybercrime, false identity leading to trapping the victim, pornographic websites that can be easily accessed by the children’s that can spoil their life.

On the other hand, students can use to prepare their notes, learn poems and programming languages learn to paint and draw and many more which helps them to enhance their skills. At the end, it totally depends on us how we use it.

Table of Contents

Essay 311 – Advantages and disadvantages of using computer technology in education

Gt writing task 2 / essay sample # 311.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Computers are becoming an essential part of education. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using computer technology in education and give your opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Computers have become a vital tool in educational institutions. Although the phenomenon suffers from a few drawbacks like varied computer literacy levels and academic dishonesty, I believe that it is more beneficial as it provides enormous resources and an effective teaching tool.

One of the major drawbacks of technology in education is varied computer literacy among teachers and learners. Put simply, computers pose an extra challenge to teachers because they have to deal with learners of varying computer literacy levels. Some pupils come into the classroom well versed in computer literacy, yet others enter with no prior knowledge. It is therefore difficult for educators to handle this vast difference. On top of that, not all teachers are technologically sound when it comes to teaching using computers and the internet. Another primary disadvantage is academic dishonesty. Students who intend to plagiarize can simply copy and paste information into their assignments. For example, at least 20%-25% of students got involved in academic dishonesty, according to a recent college survey, due to the ease of cheating when they took tests from home during the Covid-19 pandemic.

On the other hand, the benefits of using computer technology in education are enormous. To begin with, the main advantage is that students get access to video tutorials, e-books, course materials and online collaboration platforms where they can grasp difficult concepts easily and flexibly. For instance, “Padlet” is a collaboration platform where pupils can ask questions, share ideas as well as continue class discussions beyond the classroom. Even though varied computer literacy and academic dishonesty negatively impact learning, I believe that using computers in education is more advantageous. This is because computers prove to be highly effective teaching tools. For example, teachers, with the help of computers, can show videos, images and texts that are interesting and relevant to what they are teaching.

In conclusion, employing computer technology in education poses some challenges but it offers students a large resource for learning and is proved to be an effective teaching tool. It is expected that teachers would use technology to make education more interesting, engaging and intuitive.

One Comment to “Essay 311 – Advantages and disadvantages of using computer technology in education”

With the advent of modern technology and globalization, schools have started to use various digital technologies in order to improve the teaching and learning processes and make lessons more interactive. However, such trends, in my perspective, have their own drawbacks. This essay will consider both perspectives but will focus on the negative impacts of cutting-edge digital devices on the education process.

On the one hand, the advantages of using the internet, computers and other portable devices in the current educational process are enormous. Computers have a database of a range of educational materials such as video tutorials, e-books, and other materials that help students learn better. The interactive platforms that computers enable teachers and students to use are highly beneficial. It connects learners from anywhere in the world and offers updated information and educational games, which makes the educational process more interactive and fun, while at the same time helping students to obtain more useful and newest information in a more relaxed atmosphere.

While computers might seem like a useful instrument in the studying process, it has severe drawbacks on the quality of education and students’ mental health. Nowadays, many tutors use computers to provide their lessons and the whole process is done online. It lacks the personal touch and in-person motivation in the classroom. Some lessons are prepared without a detailed explanation and they contain some fuzziest points. Such a method of teaching, using computers leads to surface learning, useful only to pass formal exams but unfortunately fail to provide comprehensive knowledge. Moreover, modern, educational-social platforms and portable digital devices are often fulfilled with tons of useless information, and gullible students who watch all educational-interactive videos often overload their brain with useless and useful information and damage their brain cells. In the short term, it might create anxiety and stress, but in the long term, it might lead to various neurological disorders such as delirium and suicidal tendency due to the unstructured neuro-bonds.

In conclusion, despite some tangible benefits of using electronic devices in contemporary schools, they have many disadvantages. Their benefits pale in comparison to the tremendous negative impacts of this process. It is expected that real teachers would teach students in classroom-based education settings.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Computer Essay

The education sector has evolved a great deal since the introduction of computers to classes. Computers, used in conjunction with the Internet and specialized training, have made a significant impact on education, especially in the area of research. While computers have exposed learners to limitless information, it has both advantages and disadvantages.

Computer Advantages

With computers, learners today can access a lot of valuable information concerning their research projects. There are some sites providing free access to academic resources for them. These sites include Khan’s Academy, Byte-Notes, Codecademy, and the most popular of them all, Wikipedia.

Photo of Woman Lying on Bed While Using Laptop

Research students make their research relevant and of high quality with the use of related sites, since they can compare what they are delving into with what other researchers are doing. Also, instead of doing one round of research with the same results, they can view what others have done in their research areas and focus on new ideas. This novel approach boosts research quality since the focus on real-life problems is enhanced. The output of their study increases in relevance to their target audience as a result.

Computers also help students save time. Before the introduction of computers, they had to go through large volumes of books and research journals to get the information they needed. Today, with these smart machines, they get their information with just a click.

By saving time, learners make room for other academic work, which improves their academic performance overall. This then raises the quality of education in learning institutions.

Learners become more creative with computers as opposed to just the use of books. With computers, students learn programming languages such as C++. In learning these programming languages, they create programs that are useful to companies or even the institutions where they are learning. These individuals see what others have created, hence, increasing the desire of others to likewise create.

The Challenges of Computer Technology

Despite the benefits of having computers, these intelligent machines can also be harmful to students. The use of computers without a primary purpose leads to time and energy wastage. Some of them spend a substantial amount of time playing games on computers and chatting.

Photo of Couple Talking While Holding Laptop and Ipad

Gaming consumes time and energy, leaving learners unmotivated to focus on their current requirements. Also, some of these computer activities influence how one thinks, such as those that are violence- and war-themed. These can actually affect a gamer’s mental state.

In a similar fashion, spending time chatting with friends on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter make the user lose complete track of time. Not only that, constant exposure to blue light from a screen is damaging to the eyes.

Even worse, students accidentally or willingly gain access to inappropriate sites, such as pornographic websites. These poison their minds and may even lead to decreased morale amongst the student population. Pornography increases the likelihood of sexual objectification in both genders.

In the classroom, tech-savvy learners use computers to cheat in their homework, tests, and research papers. Since almost all the information needed by the students can be found on the Internet, people download and present pre-fabricated solutions to their assignments as their own. Downloading and submitting an answer as yours is actually a form of plagiarism. Not only is it an academic offense, plagiarizing robs a learner of the potential to excel on his or her own terms.

Computers are important to students and they must be oriented on their correct usage right off the bat. Before using these machines, learners must define the purpose of using them to avoid wasting time and energy and making inappropriate mistakes.

Network administrators should also block unwanted or inappropriate sites. Preventing people from accessing these will help them concentrate and focus on their academic work. The combination of interest and diligence, multiplied by the power and speed of computers, can increase the quality of student life and the actual performance of the user.

Regardless of sector, computers have certainly enhanced our way of life. As with all innovations, it’s not so much the machine that is good or bad; it is really our usage of it that determines its role in our lives.

Short Essay On Advantages And Disadvantages Of Computers In Education (Short Essay Sample)

Let’s face it, we can no longer imagine life without the nifty computer. Whether business people, employees, or even family members, every kind of individual or group needs this intelligent machine to go about everyday life. We process financial transactions, play games, connect to services, create documents, communicate, and yes, even waste time, on them.

But for this essay, let’s focus on the impact of computers on the education system. Gone are the days when learners would have to troop to the school or public library and learn the Dewey Decimal System by heart. With the computer and online services, you gain entry to more than just the physical resources available in your library. You also get a network of free and vast resources to complement your current research. This results not only in greater data consolidation; it also means a reduced time span for those working against a tight deadline.

There is no doubt in my mind that the computer has revolutionized the way people, young and old alike, learn today. Libraries have learned not to compete with it, and instead, wisely integrate it into their facilities.

Why Are Computer Classes Important For Students?

Computer classes are a typical prerequisite in most universities during freshman year. It is important for a learner to know how to navigate a computer system in order to maximize the many advantages it presents. Used wisely and strategically, the computer, coupled with the speed of the Internet, can be your ally for those long nights of trying to beat the deadline. Research has become that much faster (albeit sometimes overwhelming, with the amount of data out there) and all you have to do is reformat the information on your machine.

What Are The Disadvantages Of A Computer?

While there are numerous good aspects to owning a computer, like any piece of technology, it can turn into a weapon against you if you aren’t able to use it properly. Being able to connect to huge amounts of data at warp speeds can be addictive to some. There is a phenomenon called “sidebar-hopping,” where a user keeps on clicking related links because of the obsession to find more data to no end. This can cause you to lose track of present time and lose precious energy to do what you were really supposed to do online. While it helps you communicate faster with loved ones, getting overly consumed by chatting can put your important tasks on hold. It also adversely affects your health, with prolonged exposure to blue light weakening eyesight. It can be especially harmful to children whose brains are still developing.

Short Essay on Advantages and Disadvantages of Computer

Introduction

The computer is an electronic device, that receives information from the source, process the information and delivers the processed information to the destination. In today’s world, each and every mechanism involves the use of computers. Thinking an age without computers is now a hardship. Almost, in each and every department, we are using computers in one way or another. Be it medicine, teaching, defense or Finance, use of a computer is vast. With the help of computers and well developed technology, we have also automated many functionalities, that were difficult for humans.

Initially, computers were large in size and were designed to hold only the minimum amount of data, however, in today’s world, people have invented much smaller and easier to handle computers that are capable of storing large amount of information. Even though, we are using computers, vastly in many fields, there are many pros and cons, while using computers. In this essay, we are going to discuss about the advantages and disadvantages of using computers

Advantages of Computer

Computers are used widely in many fields, since they can quickly process large amount of information, in a small time. They are also known to complete tasks more efficiently and there is a minimum chance for errors. It can perform complex functionality and complete them in few seconds. When some tasks are tedious for men, computers can perform them with ease. Some of the advantages of computers are as follows:

  • Data Storage: Computers are known to store a large amount of data and we can search the data without any hassle. The data can also be found in the minimum amount of time. However, when we store data in files or as hard copies, it is difficult to maintain and when we are searching for information, it takes a lot of time.
  • Data Protection: In computers we can store sensitive data like customer information, financial details can be stored securely. In addition to this, the data can be protected from loss. However, on the other hand, if data are stored manually, there is a chance of data loss and also data privacy is also questionable.
  • Documentation and Presentation: Computers are used for creating official document and creating presentations. Even though, these can be done manually, when we create Power point presentations online, we can present it neatly and in a more understandable manner. Calculations can also be done with the help of spreadsheets, since this are having inbuilt mathematical functionalities.

  • Cost Effective: Since maintaining the data are done online and there is reduced need for paperwork, which reduces cost and increases efficiency.

Disadvantages of Computer

Even though, in today’s world we will face many difficulties without the use of computer, there are also few cons of this upcoming technology, They are as follows:

  • Changing technology: Due to many upcoming technology, the technology or functionality which is considered to be new today, may soon face the threat of becoming obsolete.
  • Increased Manpower Cost: Even though, there are machines to do the jobs online, these tasks need to be monitored by manpower. And at times, the system may stop responding and may require human attention.
  • Virus and Data Loss: Computers are preferred for Data storage and protection, however, when the virus attacks the computer there is a chance of losing precious data and may not be able to retrieve those back.

Even though, there are many advantages and disadvantages of computers, we cannot deny the fact that the computer is most need technology in today’s world.

Randomness in computation wins computer-science ‘Nobel’

A leader in the field of computational theory is the latest winner of the A. M. Turing Award, sometimes described as the ‘Nobel Prize’ of computer science.

Avi Wigderson at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton, New Jersey, is known for work straddling several disciplines, and had already won a share of the Abel Prize , a top mathematics award, three years ago.

He receives the Turing Award “for foundational contributions to the theory of computation, including reshaping our understanding of the role of randomness in computation, and for his decades of intellectual leadership in theoretical computer science”, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in New York City announced on 10 April.

“I was extremely happy, and I didn’t expect this at all,” Wigderson tells Nature . “I’m getting so much love and appreciation from my community that I don’t need prizes.”

‘A towering intellectual force’

Wigderson was born in Haifa, Israel, in 1956. He studied at Technion — Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa and later at Princeton University; he has been at the IAS since 1999. He is known for his work on computational complexity — which studies how certain problems are inherently slow to solve, even in principle — and on randomness in computation. Many practical algorithms make random choices to achieve their objectives more efficiently; in a series of groundbreaking studies in the 1990s, Wigderson and his collaborators showed that conventional, deterministic algorithms can, in principle, be roughly as efficient as ‘randomized’ ones 1 . The results helped to confirm that random algorithms can be as accurate as deterministic ones are.

“Wigderson is a towering intellectual force in theoretical computer science,” said ACM president Yannis Ioannidis in a statement. In addition to Wigderson’s academic achievements, the ACS cited his “friendliness, enthusiasm, and generosity”, which have led him to be a mentor to or collaborate with hundreds of researchers worldwide. Wigderson admits that he is a “big proselytizer” of the intellectual pleasures of his discipline — he wrote a popular book about it and made it freely available on his website . “I think this field is great, and I am happy to explain it to anybody.”

The Turing Award is named after the celebrated British mathematician and code-breaker Alan Turing (1912–54), who in the 1930s laid the conceptual foundations of modern computing. “I feel completely at home with mathematics,” says Wigderson, adding that as an intellectual endeavour, theoretical computer science is indistinguishable from maths. “We prove theorems, like mathematicians.”

IELTS essay about the advantages and disadvantages of computer games

by Manjusha Nambiar · Published November 1, 2015 · Updated May 12, 2023

IELTS essay

Some people think that computer games are bad for children, while others believe that they are useful. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of computer games and give your own opinion.

Sample response

Computer games are addictive. That is the main reason children play them for hours on end. There are several disadvantages to spending a lot of time in front of the computer.

Computer games merely provide entertainment. Children who are addicted to computer games tend to have poor grades because they do not get enough time to focus on their studies. Also, they have reduced social skills. They are constantly glued to their screens and show hardly any interest in interacting with their family members or peers. This can lead to social isolation and serious behavioural problems.

Some popular computer games glorify violence and crime. Children who grow up playing these games may get into anti-social activities. Even if they don’t become criminals in the future, they may still exhibit a disregard for values. Computer games also cause vision problems in children. Children are not supposed to stare at the computer screen for hours on end. If they do, they will develop serious eye strain which may also affect their studies.

On the bright side, computer games make children competitive. Games that require them to play against virtual or real opponents living in another part of the world improve their concentration and ability to take decisions quickly. These are definitely positive aspects but a child does not have to play computer games to develop these skills.

To conclude, after analysing the advantages and disadvantages of playing computer games it is not hard to see that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. In my opinion, parents should restrict the amount of time their children spend in front of the computers. That said, there is no harm in playing a game or two every now and then, but addiction is definitely a problem.

The computer is one of the most important inventions among all inventions that we use or view in this world but the computer still got various kind of demerits in it. The computer has been the major factor due to which there arise various kinds of problems. The computer got various kinds of applications and programs in it such as games, internet browsers, editors, etc and these things attract people to use the computer continuously but mostly it is seen in the youngster’s and in growing children due to this nature of people, they suffer from eye problem’s and they mostly try to get involved in such thing and ignore various other things like: – their studies, works and various other activities.

The computers had made people very lazy just because of the facilities that the computer had provided them. As the computer had made various kind of work far easier than it should have been due to which people have to contribute less effort to do various kind of work and mostly dependent on computers to perform various kind of work and all these makes people lazy and on absence of computer there would be inefficiency n job and consume long time to perform the same work. Computer as computer has also many demerits individually and in the society. Computer can destroy the culture of a certain group of people in the society, especially youths. Many of the youth uses internet computers to watch destructive programs stored in the computer. Also some People can use computer for a long time, without protection people can suffer eyes problem The disadvantages of computer in human life.

As we see above, we got many advantages of Computer in Human Life. But, the computer also has its negative side. The rise of cyber crime, the use of chat rooms for indecent discussion, certain websites, which deal in pornographic material have been noticed. If a student is using a computer and if he hasn’t subject of the computer then it is very bad for a student because student will just hear songs and also missing time on games and there for by the cause of computer he cannot study and he will anytime using computer and any time we will be playing and hearing songs.

The children play the games for a long time by this they cannot concentrate in there studies and 7 to 10 years children get eye sight. Advantages are nothing but we have lot of use. But the use of it should be limited. Statistical data of the interview conducted by the American Research Company below will show the disadvantages of computer in human life. If you have to write an essay on the advantages and disadvantages of a computer, this statistics can turn much useful to you….:) •65% of Americans spend more time sitting in front of their PC than with their wives and husbands; •84% of them are already addicted to computers;

•52% of PC users take their PC system failure as their personal failure; •19% of people have a strong desire to punch PC in order to “punish” it for “misbehavior.” •Only 18 percent of televisions and computers were recycled. Many parts inside computer are hazardous. Computers have a harmful impact on people’s health. Many computers are thrown away due to the users’ needs exceeding the processing power and features of the computer. Computers contain potentially harmful toxic materials in much of their inner working parts. For example, cadmium, which is a known carcinogen, can be found in chip resistors. Mercury is found in LCD and laptop screens, and can cause serious health issues in children, as well as organ damage in adults. Mercury can also cause damage to the environment if not disposed of properly. Lead is found in computer screens as well as circuit boards, and may cause serious health problems including nervous system damage, kidney damage, blood problems and birth defects. Another disadvantage of compter is also the speed its spread the bad news. Bad news from USA can be immediately felt in this computer age. Power of Human Academic Assistance vs. AI

R apid advancements in technology have simplified almost every aspect of our lives. From how we work to how we communicate, machines play an increasingly crucial role.

Writing, too, especially in the realm of academia, has been touched by the hands of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and we’re observing a flip of the proverbial pen between humans and bots in real time.

So, when it comes to writing a well-done essay, crafting poetry, or even storytelling, an inevitable question arises: who does it better?

As AI and humans engage in a literary battle, let’s explore their prowess and ponder which of the two reigns supreme concerning academic assistance.

Advantages of Human-Academic Assistance

You can benefit much more from human writers, If you’re a college student, go online and purchase essays for cheap while maintaining high levels of quality and reliability.

Here are some additional benefits that you’ll get when you buy an essay from a human writer:

Creativity and originality

Originality and creativity are two distinct characteristics that are specific to human writers that distinguish their work. These qualities entail:

Voice and tone

A human writer has a distinct personality, tone, and style that shine through their work. When writing your academic paper, you must present your ideas in a way that demonstrates your uniqueness, uses humor and conveys your emotions by showing how you feel about the topic.

Human writers are the only ones capable of achieving that personal touch. It is crucial in writing, as it helps establish a personal connection with your professor and adds authenticity to your work.

Unique ideas

Buying your essays from human writers is a good idea because they can generate innovative and fresh ideas that AI may not. They will infuse the essay with unique observations, insights, and perspectives, making it stand out from the generic content generated by AI, thus earning you high grades.

Emotional intelligence

Human writers have emotional intelligence and can create papers that resonate deeply with your target audience or professor.

Contextual adaptation

Human writers can adapt their work to various purposes, contexts, and audiences. They do this by adjusting their style, language, and tone accordingly. In this way, they can make the academic paper more effective and relatable in conveying varying messages to different groups of people.

Understanding of human nuances

Human beings have the ability to empathize with, comprehend, and perceive cultural contexts, emotions, and the subtle intricacies associated with human communication. Let's breakdown this concept further:

Cultural awareness

Human writers possess cultural knowledge and awareness that shape their understanding of norms, customs, and communication styles across diverse communities.

This understanding allows them to tailor their research and writing to an academic setting and produce content that doesn’t inadvertently cause offense to other students or readers.

Reliability and empathy

Human writers have an innate ability to convey and experience empathy. Such an emotional connection allows the writer to create relatable and engaging work that resonates with other academics at a deeper level.

Adaptability to contexts

Human writers are better skilled at adapting their tone and style to suit the intended medium, audience, and purpose. They can use different writing styles, like informative, persuasive, conversational, or formal, to provide specific instructions that will effectively assist you with any assignment you have.

Limits of Human-Academic Assistance

Despite its many benefits, human assistance in academia has a couple of disadvantages compared to AI, especially with hardware advances that have made AI writing more accessible. They include:

Limited processing capacity

Compared to AI, human writers have limitations like:

  • Time constraints where they need to rest and take breaks
  • Memory limitations (the inability to retain extensive amounts of data or attain perfect recall);
  • Multitasking challenges mean that humans are slower
  • Analytical limitations make it hard for human writers to analyze complex data sets accurately and fast
  • Humans are also prone to making errors like grammatical mistakes and typos, which take time to edit and proofread.

Subject to human biases

Human writers have biases, either consciously or unconsciously, which can influence how they interpret your instructions or the way they present findings. Such biases can affect the objectivity, clarity, and accuracy of their writing, making them less reliable than AI assistance.

Time demanding

It takes human writers a significant amount of time to develop well-thought-out arguments and ideas. Gathering information, fact-checking, and looking for reliable sources is also time-consuming, especially when writing in specialized fields.

Sticking to a balance between efficiency and quality requires time, and so does perfectionism, which is a characteristic of human writing.

Advantages of AI-Academic Assistance

Speed and efficiency.

If you need speedy assistance with your academic work, then AI is the right tool for you. It boasts rapid processing that lets it generate content in a matter of seconds or minutes, unlike much slower humans.

AI does instantaneous analysis, saving you effort and time by eliminating manual analysis. It also performs automated tasks like formatting, grammar checks, and proofreading, which will free you up to focus on the more creative parts of your assignment.

Lack of human biases

AI is unaffected by prejudices, opinions, or personal beliefs, meaning that it can generate unbiased content and offer balanced perspectives on various tasks. This means that your work will reflect inclusivity and fairness, making it suitable for a wide audience.

Ability to process massive volumes of data

AI can process vast amounts of data, something humans simply cannot do. With algorithms and computing power, AI can go through a lot of data and make sense of it. This makes it possible for AI to draw connections and generate insights from data that will enrich your work in a way that human assistance cannot match.

Disadvantages of AI-Academic Assistance

AI is very powerful, but it has certain limitations when using it for academic work. Such limitations include the following:

Inability to understand cultural nuances

AI is severely limited in accurately interpreting and comprehending human emotions and the cultural variations that influence any piece of writing, including academic work.

AI lacks emotional intelligence and cannot empathize with humans, meaning that the work it generates doesn’t capture the sentiment and essence that would make it remarkable. It cannot incorporate irony, sarcasm, and humor, which are all powerful and important for engagement.

Additionally, because AI cannot fully understand historical contexts, societal norms, and cultural backgrounds, it may generate content with inaccuracies or misinterpretations.

Lack of originality and creativity

AI cannot generate truly unique or creative content. AI lacks the imaginative capacity needed to think outside the box and come up with an entirely new thing.

AI also has the potential to spread fake news and misinformation obtained from its training data that may reinforce harmful narratives or perpetuate inaccuracies. This will undermine your school work’s reliability and credibility, which may lead to poor grades.

Finding the Compromise

We’ve established that both AI and humans have unique abilities. Let’s now talk about how you can use these two powerful resources for the best possible academic assistance:

  • You can use AI for research, ideas, and suggestions while you provide creativity, critical thinking skills, and unique perspectives. This will result in high-quality and well-rounded essays.
  • You can also use AI as a tool to enhance your writing’s efficiency and accuracy, making it polished and error-free.

In the current age of technology, the debate between human and AI assistance in academics is a hot topic. While both have distinct merits and demerits, it’s difficult to determine which is superior.

However, if you want to play it safe, you can always order essay paper online. All in all, when making such a decision, you can base it on the purpose of the writing.

If your assignment requires efficiency and speed, seek AI assistance, and when a personal connection, authenticity, and depth are required, go for human-academic assistance.

Get tech out of the classroom before it’s too late.

An illustration of a large open laptop computer with many teeth, biting down on a small schoolhouse.

By Jessica Grose

Opinion Writer

Jaime Lewis noticed that her eighth-grade son’s grades were slipping several months ago. She suspected it was because he was watching YouTube during class on his school-issued laptop, and her suspicions were validated. “I heard this from two of his teachers and confirmed with my son: Yes, he watches YouTube during class, and no, he doesn’t think he can stop. In fact, he opted out of retaking a math test he’d failed, just so he could watch YouTube,” she said.

She decided to do something about it. Lewis told me that she got together with other parents who were concerned about the unfettered use of school-sanctioned technology in San Luis Coastal Unified School District, their district in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Because they knew that it wasn’t realistic to ask for the removal of the laptops entirely, they went for what they saw as an achievable win: blocking YouTube from students’ devices. A few weeks ago, they had a meeting with the district superintendent and several other administrators, including the tech director.

To bolster their case, Lewis and her allies put together a video compilation of clips that elementary and middle school children had gotten past the district’s content filters.

Their video opens on images of nooses being fitted around the necks of the terrified women in the TV adaptation of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” It ends with the notoriously violent “Singin’ in the Rain” sequence from “A Clockwork Orange.” (Several versions of this scene are available on YouTube. The one she pointed me to included “rape scene” in the title.) Their video was part of a PowerPoint presentation filled with statements from other parents and school staff members, including one from a middle school assistant principal, who said, “I don’t know how often teachers are using YouTube in their curriculum.”

That acknowledgment gets to the heart of the problem with screens in schools. I heard from many parents who said that even when they asked district leaders how much time kids were spending on their screens, they couldn’t get straight answers; no one seemed to know, and no one seemed to be keeping track.

Eric Prater, the superintendent of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, told me that he didn’t realize how much was getting through the schools’ content filters until Lewis and her fellow parents raised concerns. “Our tech department, as I found out from the meeting, spends quite a lot of time blocking certain websites,” he said. “It’s a quite time-consuming situation that I personally was not aware of.” He added that he’s grateful this was brought to his attention.

I don’t think educators are the bad guys here. Neither does Lewis. In general, educators want the best for students. The bad guys, as I see it, are tech companies.

One way or another, we’ve allowed Big Tech’s tentacles into absolutely every aspect of our children’s education, with very little oversight and no real proof that their devices or programs improve educational outcomes. Last year Collin Binkley at The Associated Press analyzed public records and found that “many of the largest school systems spent tens of millions of dollars in pandemic money on software and services from tech companies, including licenses for apps, games and tutoring websites.” However, he continued, schools “have little or no evidence the programs helped students.”

It’s not just waste, very likely, of taxpayer money that’s at issue. After reading many of the over 900 responses from parents and educators to my questionnaire about tech in schools and from the many conversations I had over the past few weeks with readers, I’m convinced that the downsides of tech in schools far outweigh the benefits.

Though tech’s incursion into America’s public schools — particularly our overreliance on devices — hyperaccelerated in 2020, it started well before the Covid-19 pandemic. Google, which provides the operating system for lower-cost Chromebooks and is owned by the same parent company as YouTube, is a big player in the school laptop space, though I also heard from many parents and teachers whose schools supply students with other types and brands of devices.

As my newsroom colleague Natasha Singer reported in 2017 (by which point “half the nation’s primary- and secondary-school students” were, according to Google, using its education apps), “Google makes $30 per device by selling management services for the millions of Chromebooks that ship to schools. But by habituating students to its offerings at a young age, Google obtains something much more valuable”: potential lifetime customers.

The issue goes beyond access to age-inappropriate clips or general distraction during school hours. Several parents related stories of even kindergartners reading almost exclusively on iPads because their school districts had phased out hard-copy books and writing materials after shifting to digital-only curriculums. There’s evidence that this is harmful: A 2019 analysis of the literature concluded that “readers may be more efficient and aware of their performance when reading from paper compared to screens.”

“It seems to be a constant battle between fighting for the students’ active attention (because their brains are now hard-wired for the instant gratification of TikTok and YouTube videos) and making sure they aren’t going to sites outside of the dozens they should be,” Nicole Post, who teaches at a public elementary school in Missouri, wrote to me. “It took months for students to listen to me tell a story or engage in a read-aloud. I’m distressed at the level of technology we’ve socialized them to believe is normal. I would give anything for a math or social studies textbook.”

I’ve heard about kids disregarding teachers who tried to limit tech use, fine motor skills atrophying because students rarely used pencils and children whose learning was ultimately stymied by the tech that initially helped them — for example, students learning English as a second language becoming too reliant on translation apps rather than becoming fluent.

Some teachers said they have programs that block certain sites and games, but those programs can be cumbersome. Some said they have software, like GoGuardian, that allows them to see the screens of all the students in their classes at once. But classroom time is zero sum: Teachers are either teaching or acting like prison wardens; they can’t do both at the same time.

Resources are finite. Software costs money . Replacing defunct or outdated laptops costs money . When it comes to I.T., many schools are understaffed . More of the money being spent on tech and the maintenance and training around the use of that tech could be spent on other things, like actual books. And badly monitored and used tech has the most potential for harm.

I’ve considered the counterarguments: Kids who’d be distracted by tech would find something else to distract them; K-12 students need to gain familiarity with tech to instill some vague work force readiness.

But on the first point, I think other forms of distraction — like talking to friends, doodling and daydreaming — are better than playing video games or watching YouTube because they at least involve children engaging with other children or their own minds. And there’s research that suggests laptops are uniquely distracting . One 2013 study found that even being next to a student who is multitasking on a computer can hurt a student’s test scores.

On the second point, you can have designated classes to teach children how to keyboard, code or use software that don’t require them to have laptops in their hands throughout the school day. And considering that various tech companies are developing artificial intelligence that, we’re meant to understand, will upend work as we know it , whatever tech skills we’re currently teaching will probably be obsolete by the time students enter the work force anyway. By then, it’ll be too late to claw back the brain space of our nation’s children that we’ve already ceded. And for what? So today’s grade schoolers can be really, really good at making PowerPoint presentations like the ones they might one day make as white-collar adults?

That’s the part that I can’t shake: We’ve let tech companies and their products set the terms of the argument about what education should be, and too many people, myself included, didn’t initially realize it. Companies never had to prove that devices or software, broadly speaking, helped students learn before those devices had wormed their way into America’s public schools. And now the onus is on parents to marshal arguments about the detriments of tech in schools.

Holly Coleman, a parent of two who lives in Kansas and is a substitute teacher in her district, describes what students are losing:

They can type quickly but struggle to write legibly. They can find info about any topic on the internet but can’t discuss that topic using recall, creativity or critical thinking. They can make a beautiful PowerPoint or Keynote in 20 minutes but can’t write a three-page paper or hand-make a poster board. Their textbooks are all online, which is great for the seams on their backpack, but tangible pages under your fingers literally connect you to the material you’re reading and learning. These kids do not know how to move through their day without a device in their hand and under their fingertips. They never even get the chance to disconnect from their tech and reconnect with one another through eye contact and conversation.

Jonathan Haidt’s new book, “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness,” prescribes phone-free schools as a way to remedy some of the challenges facing America’s children. I agree that there’s no place for smartphones on a K-12 campus. But if you take away the phones and the kids still have near-constant internet connectivity on devices they have with them in every class, the problem won’t go away.

When Covid hit and screens became the only way for millions of kids to “attend” school, not having a personal device became an equity issue. But we’re getting to a point where the opposite may be true. According to the responses to my questionnaire, during the remote-school era, private schools seemed to rely far less on screens than public schools, and many educators said that they deliberately chose lower-tech school environments for their own children — much the same way that some tech workers intentionally send their kids to screen-free schools.

We need to reframe the entire conversation around tech in schools because it’s far from clear that we’re getting the results we want as a society and because parents are in a defensive crouch, afraid to appear anti-progress or unwilling to prepare the next generation for the future. “I feel like a baby boomer attacking like this,” said Lewis.

But the drawbacks of constant screen time in schools go beyond data privacy, job security and whether a specific app increases math performance by a standard deviation. As Lewis put it, using tech in the classroom makes students “so passive, and it requires so little agency and initiative.” She added, “I’m very concerned about the species’ ability to survive and the ability to think critically and the importance of critical thinking outside of getting a job.”

If we don’t hit pause now and try to roll back some of the excesses, we’ll be doing our children — and society — a profound disservice.

The good news is that sometimes when the stakes become clear, educators respond: In May, Dr. Prater said, “we’re going to remove access to YouTube from our district devices for students.” He added that teachers will still be able to get access to YouTube if they want to show instructional videos. The district is also rethinking its phone policy to cut down on personal device use in the classroom. “For me,” he said, “it’s all about how do you find the common-sense approach, going forward, and match that up with good old-fashioned hands-on learning?” He knows technology can cause “a great deal of harm if we’re not careful.”

Admitted students talk role of ChatGPT in essays amid changing admissions policies

White circle lights over white chairs around low tables on a carpeted floor. There are stairs in the background against a yellow wall.

Princeton admitted students to the Class of 2028 on Dec. 14 as part of its Single Choice Early Action round.

Louisa gheorghita / the daily princetonian.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is receiving a growing focus at Princeton, serving as the subject of the Class of 2028 Pre-Read and spurring the creation of the Princeton Language and Intelligence Initiative (PLI) in September 2023. ChatGPT’s growing popularity has recently sparked conversation about its place in the classroom and whether it can be accurately detected .

Questions about the role of AI in essay writing and the weight essays should hold in the admissions process remain, during an admissions cycle already upturned by the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down affirmative action. These concerns have already resulted in Duke University’s decision to abandon the practice of scoring applicant essays.

The newly admitted Class of 2028 is the first Princeton class to have access to this controversial technology during the admissions process. The Daily Princetonian spoke to admits on their perspective on the usage of generative AI during the college application process, and a professor with expertise in the field.

All three incoming members of the Class of 2028 interviewed by the ‘Prince’ said that they had not used any form of AI in their essays, though one student experimented with AI during the essay-writing process.

They expressed that they felt the personal focus of the essay made it an ill-fit for AI assistance.

“I don’t really know what it would help with because you’re supposed to write about yourself, and it doesn’t know anything about you,” Jacob Emerson ’28 said.

Jamie Creasi ’28 expressed a similar sentiment. “There’s no way for it to communicate the challenges I’ve experienced, or what kind of life I have,” she said.

Hemant Sharma ’28 described his experience with attempting to use AI. He found that his essay “lost its emotional touch” so he ended up reverting to his old essay. “[ChatGPT] just made everything worse,” he said.

The University shares this position. In a written statement to the ‘Prince,’ University Spokesperson Jennifer Morrill wrote, “An essay generated by an AI platform is unlikely to be as rich and nuanced as a student’s own words.”

The ‘Prince’ spoke with Associate Professor of Computer Science Arvind Narayanan about ChatGPT's writing abilities. Professor Narayanan said that while AI may be capable of writing a passable essay, it likely would not be any easier than writing an essay without AI assistance.

Professor Narayanan said, “If the use of AI assistance causes [the college admissions essay] to matter even less, I see it as an entirely positive development,” finding the essay to be “an exercise in performative authenticity.”

The new admits differed in opinion about regulating generative AI use in the college admissions process. Creasi likened the usage of ChatGPT to a calculator which helps conduct simple calculations in order to allow a focus on more complex tasks.

Subscribe

“At first, people saw calculators as a way of cheating because you don’t have to do a lot of the equations that you once did or use your mind in the same sort of way. But since then, we’ve adapted to calculators … we can do higher level math or physics,” he said.

Conversely, Sharma felt that detection of AI usage in a college essay should be allowed, stating, “I think there should be at least a minor punishment because it’s easier if we curb it now so that it doesn’t hurt anyone later in the future.”

However, even if schools agreed to take action against students suspected of unauthorized AI use, Professor Narayanan believes AI-identification technology is not at the “level of accuracy that would make it justifiable to penalize applicants for using AI assistance.”

Although the University did not respond with explicit rules about the use of generative AI in the college application process, Morrill wrote that all applicants “sign a statement acknowledging all information in the application (including the essays) is their own work.”
