"The Patriot'' is a fable arguing the futility of pacifism, set against the backdrop of the Revolutionary War. It is rousing and entertaining, and you get your money's worth, but there isn't an idea in it that will stand up to thoughtful scrutiny.

The British are seen as gentlemanly fops or sadistic monsters, and the Americans come in two categories: brave or braver. Those who have a serious interest in the period will find it a cartoon; those raised on summer action movies will find it more stimulating than most.

Mel Gibson stars, in a powerful and effective performance, as a widower named Benjamin Martin with seven children. He saw enough of battle in the French and Indian Wars, and was frightened by what he learned about himself. He counsels a treaty with King George. Asked about his principles by an old comrade in arms ( Chris Cooper ), he replies, "I'm a parent. I haven't got the luxury of principles.'' But he gets some in a hurry, after the monstrous British Col. William Tavington ( Jason Isaacs ), arrests Martin's eldest son Gabriel ( Heath Ledger ) and takes him away to be hanged, after first shooting another of Martin's sons just for the hell of it and burning down his house.

Since Martin had merely been treating the wounded of both sides in his home, this seems excessive, and in the long run turns out to be extremely unwise for the British, since Martin goes on to more or less single-handedly mastermind their defeat. There must have been many British officers less cruel--but none would have served the screenplay's purpose, which is to show Martin driven berserk by grief, rage and the need for revenge.

The following sequence is the film's most disturbing. Martin and his sons hide in the woods and ambush Tavington and his soldiers; eventually the battle comes down to hand-to-hand fighting (with Martin wielding a tomahawk). Gabriel is freed, and the younger boys get a taste for blood ("I'm glad I killed them!'' one of the tykes cries. "I'm glad!''). The movie's scenes of carnage have more impact than the multiple killings in a film like "Shaft,'' because they are personal, not technical; individual soldiers, frightened and ill-prepared, are fighting for their lives, while in the modern action movies, most of the victims are pop-up arcade targets.

The big players in the war (George Washington, King George) are far offscreen, although we do meet Gen. Cornwallis ( Tom Wilkinson ), a British leader who promotes a "gentlemanly'' conduct of the war and rebukes Tavington for his brutality. Still, when the Americans refuse to "fight fair'' and adopt hit-and-run guerrilla tactics against the British (who march in orderly ranks into gunfire), Cornwallis bends enough to authorize the evil colonel to take what steps are necessary to bring down Martin (by now legendary as "the Ghost'').

The movie's battle scenes come in two flavors--harrowing and unlikely. Two battles near the beginning of the film are conveniently fought in open fields visible from the upper windows of houses, so onlookers have excellent seats for the show and can supply a running narration. No doubt revolutionary battles were fought right there in the pasture, but would Benjamin Martin allow his kids to stand in the windows, or tell them to hide in the barn? The "real'' battles are grueling tests of men and horses, as soldiers march into withering fire, and the survivors draw their swords or fix their bayonets for blood-soaked combat in close quarters. These battles seem anarchic and pitiless, and respect the movie convention that bitter rivals will sooner or later find themselves face to face. The scenes are well-staged by the director, Roland Emmerich , working from a script by Robert Rodat , the same man who wrote "Saving Private Ryan,'' with its equally appalling battle scenes.

Hollywood movies are at pains these days to provide a role for a heroic African-American or two. A role for a black sailor was found in the segregated U.S. Navy submarine corps in "U-571'' (he was a mess orderly). Now we have a black slave who fights beside white men (even those who hate him) because Gen. Washington has promised freedom for all slaves who fight for a year. Good enough, but why not go all the way and give this character dialogue and a real role to play--instead of demeaningly using him only to count down the months and days until his freedom? When the former slave finally gets two whole sentences in a row, at the end, he quotes Martin's son: "Gabriel said if we won the war, we could build a whole new world. We could get started right here with your home.'' Uh-huh. Why not get started with your own home? The movie offers light comic relief to ease the tension (Martin's handmade chairs keep collapsing beneath him), and a love story (Gabriel falls for Ann, a plucky colonial girl who catches his eye with a patriotic speech). Ann's father is a deaf man who misunderstands things. When Gabriel asks permission to write Ann, the old man at first takes offense. Then he says, "Oh ... write her! Of course you may.'' What did he think Gabriel had asked? Meanwhile, there's even female company for the hard-bitten Benjamin Martin, who asks the sister of his dead wife, "May I sit here?'' Her answer got laughs in the screening I attended: "It's a free country--or at least, it will be.'' These passages and others (including the Dead Man Who Is Not Really Dead) have been trucked directly into "The Patriot'' from the warehouse of timeless cliches. They betray the movie's lack of serious intentions. It basically wants to be a summer action movie, with a historical gloss. At that, it succeeds. I enjoyed the strength and conviction of Gibson's performance, the sweep of the battle scenes, and the absurdity of the British caricatures. None of it has much to do with the historical reality of the Revolutionary War, but with such an enormous budget at risk, how could it?

The patriot true story: what really happened in mel gibson's movie.

Roland Emmerich's 2000 film The Patriot is an entertaining Revolutionary War epic, but it's more historical fiction than fact. Here's the true story.

Roland Emmerich's 2000 historical war epic The Patriot , which stars Mel Gibson as an American revolutionary leader called Benjamin Martin, has become classic Independence Day viewing - but how much of what's shown in the movie happened in real life?

In The Patriot , Benjamin Martin is a veteran of the French and Indian War who is called upon to vote for South Carolina joining the American War of Independence . Martin is initially impartial, explaining that he believes in the cause but is not willing to fight in a war for it. Because he is not willing to fight himself, he is not willing to vote to send others to fight. However, his neutral stance comes crashing down when a group of Redcoats attack his home and their leader, Colonel William Tavington, murders one of his sons. Regretting his earlier inaction and determined to get revenge, Martin recruits a militia and leads them in a highly effective guerrilla campaign against the British forces in South Carolina.

The Patriot has been widely criticized for its unfair villainizing of the British, its invention of a war atrocity that didn't happen, and its sugarcoating of slavery. But while it may be more historical fiction than historical fact, the movie is partly based on true events and people. And when it comes to depicting the battle strategies used by both sides in the War of Independence, The Patriot demonstrates some impressive historical accuracy. Here's a breakdown of what parts of the Mel Gibson movie really happened, and what parts definitely didn't happen.

Benjamin Martin Is Mainly Based on Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion

There was no Patriot militia leader called Benjamin Martin who fought in the Revolutionary War, and the details of Benjamin's life and family are fictionalized. However, in the DVD featurette "True Patriots," screenwriter Robert Rodat explains that Benjamin is based on several different real historical figures: Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion, Thomas Sumter, Nathanael Greene, Andrew Pickens and Daniel Morgan. Francis Marion appears to have been the primary influence, since many details of Benjamin's character - including his role in the French and Indian War, his use of guerrilla warfare tactics, his gathering and leadership of militiamen, and his use of ambushes to gather intelligence - are lifted straight from Marion's biography.

Creating a fictional character rather than using any one historical figure gives The Patriot an excuse to leave out details that would have been harder for modern audiences to tolerate in a supposed hero. For example, the African-American characters who work in Benjamin's home and fields are said to be freed slaves who are devastated when they're forcibly taken away to fight for the British. Francis Marion, however, was a slaveowner who had a reputation for raping his female slaves, and during the war he targeted and executed freed slaves who were suspected of working with the British. He was also known for his persecution and slaughter of Cherokee Indians, which in the movie is rewritten as a single wartime incident that Benjamin Martin considers his greatest shame and regret. An anonymous source from Sony Pictures told The Guardian that the movie was originally supposed to be a factual biography of Marion, but " They couldn't go ahead once historians had given them chapter and verse on the Swamp Fox, so they had to change his name ."

William Tavington Is Loosely Based On Banastre Tarleton

The Patriot 's main villain is the cartoonishly evil William Tavington, played by Jason Isaacs, who is based on the real British soldier and politician Sir Banastre Tarleton. The real Tarleton led British forces at the Battle of Cowpens (the focus of The Patriot 's third act), and was charged with the task of rooting out and capturing the "Swamp Fox" when Marion proved troublesome to British forces in South Carolina. Like Tavington in the movie, he was unsuccessful. Tarleton was given the nickname "the Butcher," but it wasn't because of a pattern of brutal treatment of civilians.

Related:  Mad Max: The True Story Behind Mel Gibson's Audition

The nickname stemmed from a single battle, the Battle of Waxhaws, during which Tarleton was shot down from his horse and trapped underneath it. While he was unable to give orders, his temporarily leaderless men continued to kill Continental soldiers, many of whom were surrendering or not resisting. The Continental Army used the "Waxhaws massacre" in a propaganda campaign against the British, with a focus on Tarleton as the villain of the story. The campaign was very successful, and "Tarleton's Quarter" caught on as a saying that meant taking no prisoners. However, Tarleton was not the child-murdering monster that William Tavington is portrayed as in The Patriot , and Tavington's most monstrous act definitely never happened.

The British Did Not Burn A Church Full Of Civilians

Easily the most controversial scene in The Patriot is when Tavington corners a group of townspeople - including women and children - who have gathered to pray in church, and orders his men to padlock the doors and burn the church down with them inside it. While there were civilian casualties and buildings burned in the Revolutionary War, there is no record of anything like this being committed by either side. The Patriot has been heavily criticized for this scene, both because it misleadingly villainizes the British army and because it cheapens the horror of a similar real-life atrocity.

A version of this church-burning was committed almost 200 years later by an SS Panzer Divison during World War II , when the villagers of Oradour-sur-Glane in Nazi-occupied France were rounded up and massacred. At one point people were herded into the local church and grenades were then thrown in after them, with machine gun fire used to cut down anyone trying to escape through the windows. The victims included 247 women, 205 children and three priests.

The Patriot Heavily Sugarcoats Slavery

The other main area where The Patriot 's historical inaccuracy is considered particularly egregious is its sugarcoating of how slaves and freed slaves were treated by the Continental Army in general, and Francis Marion specifically. The black characters in The Patriot are portrayed as freed men and women who earn a living by working Benjamin Martin's land, and who love his family and are treated like family themselves. As mentioned earlier, this was definitely not the reality for Francis Marion's slaves.

Related:  Harriet True Story: What The Underground Railroad Movie Gets Right & Changes

Both the British and the American armies tried to motivate slaves to fight on their behalf by offering them their freedom and even some payment after a period of service, and many slaves fled to fight for the British against their former owners. In The Patriot , however, the Martin family's freed slaves being rounded up to fight for the British is treated as a sad moment, whereas Occam being donated to Benjamin Martin's militia by his owner and earning his freedom through service is framed as a triumphant storyline. Director Spike Lee was particularly vocal about his disgust at how The Patriot " dodged around, skirted about or completely ignored slavery ," calling it " pure, blatant American Hollywood propaganda. A complete whitewashing of history ."

The Patriot Is Most Historically Accurate In Its Battle Scenes

Ironically, the aspect of The Patriot that might seem the most ridiculous is actually where it shines the most in terms of historical accuracy. The film portrays two key battles of the Revolutionary War: the Battle of Camden (which Gabriel and Benjamin observe from a distance) and the Battle of Cowpens (the final battle of the movie). The sight of the American and British forces stiffly marching towards each other across a field and then standing still and fully exposed in regimented columns while firing their rifles may seem strange compared to more modern tactics of trench warfare and defensive fighting positions. However, at the time firearms took a long time to reload (at best, a soldier could fire around three shots per minute) and were not particularly accurate even when aimed perfectly (the scene of Benjamin and his two sons sniping Redcoats with pinpoint precision is very unrealistic).

This meant that the key to victory in open battle was holding formation and firing as quickly as possible, because in formation soldiers became greater than the sum of their parts. Forty men standing in formation and firing in the same general direction would land more shots than those same forty men scattered across the battlefield and trying to aim at specific targets. And while one line of soldiers dropped down to reload, the line standing behind them could take aim and fire the next volley of shots. Victory could also be won by forcing the opposing side to break their own formation, which in the Battle of Camden was achieved through a bayonet charge that the American forces were unprepared for, and which caused them to panic and scatter.

The American soldiers at the Battle of Cowpens were led by General Daniel Morgan, one of the men that Benjamin Martin is based on, and the scene in which militia members are asked to fire only two shots and then feign a retreat really did happen. The plan was designed to draw the British forces forward, believing they had the Americans on the run, only to lead them into a prepared volley of musket fire immediately followed by a bayonet charge. The actual deaths and injuries inflicted by this surprise attack were arguably less important than the emotional shock of it, which broke the already strained morale of the British soldiers and caused many of them to flee, surrender, or simply collapse to the ground. While The Patriot 's actual story may be largely fictionalized, the movie does a great job of showing the effectiveness of both line formations and guerrilla tactics during the Revolutionary War.

Summary of the Movie “Patriot” by Roland Emmerich Essay

The events in the film “Patriot” are happening during the period of the American Revolution. The main theme of the movie is uselessness of pacifism, as demonstrated in the setting of the American Revolution. As such, growing hostilities between citizens of Great Britain’s thirteen colonies and the local administration, which served the British crown, led to the Revolutionary War, commonly known as the American Revolution. All the colonies rebelled against its imperial rule, sparking a historic political and military conflict known as the American Revolution. The British crown and Parliament’s imposition of taxes without the consent of the colonial population sparked the initial revolt. Therefore, the paper aims to summarize the plot and the characters of the film “Patriot” in the framework of those historical events.

The main character Captain Benjamin Martin represents a collective image of the person of that time. It evolves around the contradictory feelings and desires for safety and peace along with the rage and desire for revenge. His older sons, Gabriel and Thomas, are young and ambitious men who, due to their lack of experience, are willing to get into the war and fight despite their fear. Charlotte Selton, the second wife of Benjamin, represents the women’s position during the war, their struggles, and the terror of losing their husbands, sons, and brothers. While Benjamin Martin is at war, she takes care of the children and remains strong to keep the most important family safe.

The Revolutionary War serves as the backdrop for the story, which explores the pointlessness of passivity. Namely, the movie is set in colonial South Carolina is in the year 1776 (Minow, 2000). Benjamin Martin, a military hero of French and Indian descent who is plagued by his history, now desires only to live in peace and harmony on his modest property and avoid involvement in a conflict with Great Britain, the most powerful country in the world. Gabriel and Thomas, his two eldest children, are eager to join the “Continental Army,” which has just been created (Minow, 2000). Gabriel instantly enlists to fight when South Carolina chooses to join the revolt against England.

The crucial moment of the film happens when a notoriously vicious British dragoon arrives and burns the plantation of Charlotte Selton, Benjamin Martin’s friend and close woman, to the ground. Gabriel decides to intrude in this situation, expecting to avoid possible punishment for his family since he previously let the wounded soldier into the house. Still, Tavington, the arch-enemy of the main character and leader of the Green Dragoons, gives the order to execute the injured Continental soldiers and burn the home for having hosted the enemy (Minow, 2000). As Gabriel is being led away, Benjamin cries out for mercy but is ignored. Tavington mercilessly shoots Thomas as he rushes forward to try to rescue Gabriel out of his grasp. The home workers, especially housekeeper Abigail, are compelled to work for the British government while Gabriel is carried away in a different convoy.

Benjamin soon discovers that he must choose between taking retribution, defending his family, and taking part in the creation of a brand-new, young, and ambitious country. Benjamin reluctantly decides to accompany Gabriel as he decides to re-join the Continentals, citing his decision as a soldier’s duty. Eventually, driven by anger, grief, and desire to revenge, the main characters engage in the war but take it as personal retribution. After the battle, Benjamin returns home to his family while Charlotte, now his lover, is still pregnant with their new child. He finds that his previous militia unit has begun to rebuild his farmstead on their former town road.

To conclude, the movie’s events demonstrate the reality of the people’s lives during the American revolution. In the framework of the historical events, the film demonstrates the general timeline and key moments and the war from the perspective of regular people. The losses and battles of the main characters are depicted to present the motivation behind the different attitudes towards war and the rationale behind the choices to fight or not to fight.

essay on the patriot movie

“The Patriot”: Historical Film Analysis

Introduction, works cited.

“The Patriot” is an epic war film which illustrates the relationships of loved ones. The movie is half-way realistic movie and the attempt to address the war-fares. In the analysis of this movie, we will observe the successful measures as well as flaws of the movie and the costumes, accents, locations and other important factors have helped the movie portray the history.

The Patriot is a movie that is not larger than life. This movie not even stands out to comparison with Brave heart . But to the extent it’s successful in portraying the history. Mel Gibson in the movie plays the character of Benjamin Martin. He has been portrayed as the protagonist in the movie who loves his family. His wife died during the child birth and lives with his children. The movie centralized the character of Mel Gibson in different range of roles; in the first place he plays a role of a father who becomes a war hero in order to take care of his children and for the future. This movie starts off from the scene of independence declaration o South Carolina in 1776. This movie’s star power is on the shoulder of Mel Gibson (Emmerich).

The cast includes Heath Ledger, Joely Richardson, Jason Isaacs, Chris Cooper, Adam Baldwin, Rene Auberjonois, Donal Logue, Tcheky Karyo, and Tom Wilkinson. Mel Gibson in this mellow dramatic movie is shown as a man of honor and family. Benjamin Martin holds arms with his young son Gabriel and joins the persistent red coat army. The reason behind his attainment of arms and the transformation to another character is the risk and danger his family enters when the war broke out. He found out that the only way-out for him to save his family is to fight in the honor of family. Benjamin Martin was fearful about his brutal past (Emmerich).

The movie also holds the trait of the protagonist as a character of a warrior, who is made a hero of the war by the comrades but he leaves his past behind and moves to South Carolina where he is married to a woman and lives with his 7 children. This movie also introduces the war of French and Indians in which the Britain was divided into 12 colonies. These colonies were required to pay taxes in the form of sugar, currency and other charges, but they denied paying the taxes because they were not able to do so for this imposition (Emmerich).

Benjamin attains the nature of war once again despite of his hatred of warfare. Mel Gibson has remarkably played the role of the father in this movie. Later on, in the movie Benjamin Martin is put in decisive situation where he has to look into the consequences and step ahead. It is complicated for him to go back to the life of a warrior because now he has the responsibility of his family. The brutal past, the responsibility of the family he holds and the tragedy that enters in his life again, altogether makes him a solemn and controlled man. At the point where father has to think about the family and decide, his son is free from doubts and he is sure of what to do. Gabriel is young and enthusiastic to enter into the fight and serve the young country (Emmerich).

The attire worn by the actors are well-suited and completely the way it was back in 70’s but the accents are not the true accents of the 70’s. When the colonies were made back in the war period, European people were more industrialized and were spread all over the world. Even literature was greatly under the European influence. The accents didn’t greatly possess the European mode. The locations and the sets are sharply visible in the movie for a petite period of time. The locations and the sets are successfully altered to fit the movie’s backdrop. The placements of the historical event in the movie are not overlapping which is a great success of the director and the screenplay.

The relationship of a father and the responsibility of a father towards the family have been beautifully portrayed. The good guys in the movie are Mel Gibson himself who acts as a father and a responsible man who experiences changes in life and the bad guy of the story is Isaac who plays as the villain in the story as he has killed Martin’s second son.

The Patriot is a produced by metropolis Entertainment production. The movie directed by Roland Emmerich. The screenplay is written by Oscar winner the Robert Rodat. Dean Devlin, Mark Gordon and Gary Levinson are the producers. The photography of the film is three times Academy award winner Caleb Deschanel. More over the creative team of the movie includes many great names. The editor of the movie is Oscar award winner David Berner The location where the movie has been shot is South Carolina. The costumes designer whose role has been really important for the success of the movie claimed by the critics is Deborah Scott (Emmerich).

By the analysis of the movie, it has been clarified that there are countless other movies dealing with the history of the world which were successful to portray the history. This movie is one of those movies. This movie greatly and easily without complicated suspense and the catchy screenplay adds in the historical knowledge of the viewers. The movie completely injects the message to the viewers to serve the family and land bravely and passionately.

The Patriot. Dir. R Emmerich. 2000.

The award winning movie, “The Patriot”, starring Mel Gibson as the main character Benjamin Martin, Heath Ledger as Benjamin Martin’s son Gabreil Martin and Jason Issacs as Colonel William Tavington, was directed by Roland Emmerich and later released in 2000. I watched this movie on a Saturday night with my step-dad who is a history fanatic. I chose to watch this film because of how much positive feedback I was given from fellow friends and family members who have watched the movie themselves, which all reassured me that this movie would tie perfectly with the historical theme of my paper, and simply be a “really good one.” They weren’t wrong! The historical theme displayed throughout the movie, “The Patriot”, covers the Revolutionary War ear, focusing primarily on the tactics used by the colonial militias, as well as atrocities. By watching this movie, I think it’s going to benefit me on my AP exam because not only am I a visual learner, but this movie was genuinely intriguing and in its own way the scenes throughout the movie were educational, giving me things to remember it by. This movie definitely emphasized the role that colonial militias played in the war effort. I wasn’t aware of just how much the French aided the colonists, not only by sending over weapons and troops, but by sending prized military leaders that would come to train some of the colonial militias. Before watching, “The Patriot”, I had no idea what great amounts of effort, blood, and time was put into the Revolutionary War.

The movie begins with the main character, Benjamin Martin, and his family partaking in their normal routine on their plantation. Benjamin is a widowed veteran that is well known for his actions during the French and Indian War. Faced with war once more, the start of the Revolutionary War calls upon him to guide, lead, and take on such a challenge, but with all that he’s been through Begamin is well opposed to it and would rather not be involved whatsoever. Despite Benjamin’s strong feelings toward the war his oldest child, Gabriel Martin, decides he wants to fight for the cause of independence goes against his father’s wishes by joining the war. It is later on that Gabriel returns home wounded, followed by a group of redcoats who come in search for him trying to convict him of treason with a sentence of dead, more specifically hanged. Gabriel’s little brother, Thomas Matin, acts out in opposition and runs to Gabriel trying to save him and sadly, while doing, Thomas ends up shot and dead by Colonel Tavington. The result of such events and the loss of his very own son sparks overwhelming feelings of hatred, anger, and frustration in Benjamin Martin.

As a result of such loss, though Benjamin had previously convinced himself that he wanted nothing to do with the war before, he now finds himself wanting to fight against, and he goes on to do so. Benjamin strategically plans an attack on a group of redcoats, the ones that killed Thomas, which become the major turning point in the movie because it marks Benjamin transition of opposition towards war to his determined involvement in it. After sending the rest of his children to live on their aunt’s plantation, Benjamin and Gabriel put together a militia. While recruiting men for the militia Gabriel sees Ann, his childhood friend, and the two quickly form a loving bond. Meanwhile, the militia under Benjamin Martin’s leadership soon completed numerous successful attacks on using unorthodox tactics to catch them off guard resulting in Benjamin earning the title of “The Ghost” by. Later, during one of the militia’s attacks, they realize Colonel Taviington has come more prepared than what they expected as a couple members of the militia were killed and others taken as prisoners, while the rest narrowly escape Tavington and his army. In attempts to save the men that were captured and regain power, Benjamin makes a peaceful agreement with Cornwallis to give him back his dogs and release the lieutenants and other persons of power in army that Benjamin Martin’s militia “captured.” Cornwallis agrees but realizes that Marin tricked him after it was too late.

With much rage, Cornwallis tells Tavington that he wants him to capture and kill Benjamin Martin along with his militia, which then becomes another turning point as it establishes the intense rivalry between Tavington and Benjamin Martin, as Tavington now truly has it out for Benjamin. Tavington’s army begins killing innocent townsfolk including the loved ones and families of many of the men in the militia. When Benjamin realizes this, he orders a week long intermission for the militia. During this time Gabriel and Ann get married. Shortly after Ann returns home but is killed when Tavington and his army burned the church while she was being held in. This infuriates Gabriel, and he starts a movement with a few other members of the militia and they go off to fight Tavington’s army. Towards the end of the battle the only two left are Tavington and Gabriel. Gabriel makes a move and thinks he killed Tavington’s chances, but Tavington was fooling him and Gabriel, falling for it took his time finishing off Tavington, allowing him to make the first move and turn the tables killing Gabriel. Benjamin arrives too late to save his beloved son, Gabriel, and seemingly loses hope for a little while, but he soon decides that he will keep fighting for the cause so that can’t have the satisfaction of taking anything or anyone else away from him. Benjamin soon meets with the continental army and engages in a grueling and damaging battle, the militia suffers, but soon regains power with Benjamin Martin’s leadership and determination. Benjamin and Tavington are both out for each other, and eventually meet and engage in fierce battle using swords, Benjamin heroically defeats Tavington and Cornwallis retreats allowing for huge surge of optimism and nationalism for the cause for independence. The movie ends with Benjamin returning home to find his freed slaves and family working on rebuilding his home.

Though all the characters are fictional, Benjamin Martin, the main character, seems like he could be loosely based off many real historical figures from the Revolutionary War like Daniel Morgan, Elijah Clark, Thomas Sumter, Andrew Pickens, and more specifically Francis Marion. This is partly historically accurate as Benjamin Martin was a heroic militia leader in South Carolina in the movie, and Francis Marion too was a heroic militia leader in South Carolina reality. There were many real events portrayed in “The Patriot”, however many of these are not completely historically accurate as a result of Hollywood propaganda. For example, towards the end of the movie, the Battle of Cowpens and Battle of Guilford Courthouse as the tactics used and the results align with actual tactics and results from those battle in reality, but was highly influenced by Hollywood propaganda in the movie. There were many things that were not historically accurate in “The Patriot” because it was dramatized and a result of Hollywood propaganda. The most criticized example of this is a misrepresentation of atrocities during the war. In the movie, killed prisoners of war, children, and women. They burned down a church filled with people in the movie. Though in reality may have killed innocent women, children, and prisoners of war, but it was undocumented that it was not to the extent decepticed in the movie, there was also no record of actually burning a church full of innocent townsfolk.

It seems that the director, Roland Emmerich’s, point of view regarding “The Patriot” is that American history should be celebrated, and we should be thankful for those that endure and fought through the Revolutionary War to establish America as an independent nation. I think that this movie was made a time of general stability in America to show and remind Americans of what these people did and went through to establish the independent America we know today, in an effort to promote and create a spark of patriotism and nationalism across the nation.

The Patriot Movie Summary Essay

The Patriot is a historical fiction film released in 2000. The movie is about the American Revolution, and stars Mel Gibson as Benjamin Martin. The film was directed by Roland Emmerich.

The Patriot received mixed reviews from critics, but was a box office success. The film earned over $120 million domestically and over $180 million worldwide. The Patriot was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Sound Editing and Best Cinematography.

Overall, The Patriot is an enjoyable film to watch. The story is well-told and the acting is good. The only downside to the film is that it is a bit long at over two hours. However, if you are interested in history or are just looking for a good movie to watch, The Patriot is definitely worth a watch.

“The Patriot” is set in the Revolutionary War. It’s 1776 and fierce fighting is raging in the north while people in the south are scrambling to gather anybody who would join their side of the conflict. Benjamin Martin, a veteran of the French and Indian War who desires freedom from Britain, but is unwilling to put his already motherless children at risk by going to war, is the main character. His son Gabriel, on the other hand, has a different perspective on the conflict and joins up with the Continental Army against his father’s wishes.

Benjamin Martin is left with a difficult choice, to follow his son and fight for the country he believes in or stay behind and protect his family. The movie follows the journey of Benjamin Martin as he tries to make this decision while also trying to stay alive in a war that is not going well for the Americans.

The Patriot is an excellent movie. It has great acting, story, and character development. The only thing I didn’t like about it was that it was a little bit too patriotic for my taste. Other than that, I thought it was an amazing film. If you want to see a good war movie, then I definitely recommend The Patriot. It’s one of my favorite films of all time.

Soon Benjamin is forced into action whether he wanted to be or not. When helping out hurt and wounded soldiers from both sides at his home he is viewed as a traitor, and Gabriel is ordered to be hanged. Benjamin’s son Thomas tries to help Gabriel, but is shot and killed by the brutal and nasty Colonel William Tavington, who also orders the Martin’s house to be burned to the ground. This understandably pushes Benjamin over the edge. He and his two younger sons then by themselves gun down over 20 redcoats and rescue Gabriel.

The film then culminates with the epic Battle of Cowpens where Benjamin, Gabriel and Colonel Andrew Pickens (played by The Rock) lead the Americans to a stunning victory against the British.

The Patriot is a movie about the American Revolution. It follows Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a man who doesn’t want to get involved in the war, but eventually does. The beginning of the movie shows how bad things have gotten for the colonists, with British soldiers terrorizing the people and doing whatever they want. Soon enough, Benjamin is forced into action and starts fighting back.

The film does a good job of showing the brutality of war, as well as the courage and heroism of the American patriots. The ending is very patriotic and inspiring, and is sure to leave viewers feeling proud to be American. The Patriot is a great movie for anyone interested in history or the American Revolution. It is also an excellent family film, with plenty of action and suspense to keep viewers engaged.

Benjamin is known as “The Ghost” since to his quickness and stealth. He then leaves his children with their aunt Charlotte, builds a small militia group comprised of locals to assist in the fight against the British, and seeks personal revenge. Martin’s militia kills a large number of redcoats and causes significant havoc for the British. Col. Tavington, on the other hand, resorts to brutal measures against Martin’s militia members’ families and loved ones.

The Ghost is able to kill him, but only after Martin suffers a devastating loss. The Patriot is an excellent film that will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. The Patriot is an excellent film that tells the story of the American Revolution in a very realistic way. The acting by Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger is superb, and the battle scenes are extremely well done. The film does a great job of portraying both the good and bad aspects of war, and it is sure to leave you with a greater appreciation for the sacrifices made by our Founding Fathers.

Tavington is to blame for the deaths of Gabriel’s wife, most of their SC town’s population, and eventually Gabriel himself. However, Martin’s army overcomes several challenges and plays a crucial role in the Continental effort. They join up with the main Continental Army later on and, together with the long-awaited arrival of the French, help Cornwallis and the British to surrender at Yorktown. Benjamin also obtains vengeance by murdering Tavington in battle. This spells victory for the Americans and personal success for Benjamin Martin.

The Patriot is a film about the American Revolution and one man’s fight to avenge his loved ones. The story follows Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a widower with seven children, who is drafted into the war against Britain despite his reluctance to fight. The British are led by Colonel Tavington (Jason Isaacs), a ruthless officer who has been ordered to crush the rebellion at all costs.

The Patriot is a great movie. It has everything, including action, adventure, and romance. The acting is good and the characters are believable. The plot is also very interesting and well-done. The only thing that could make it better is if it were longer. The Patriot tells the story of how the American Revolution began, and it is definitely worth watching. The Patriot is an excellent movie and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in history or the American Revolution.

It is also a great choice for families because it is not too violent and has a good message. The Patriot received mixed reviews from critics, but the majority of them agreed that it was a great movie. The Patriot currently has a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty good. I would give The Patriot 4 out of 5 stars.

The patriot: movie review.

621 words | 3 page(s)

The Patriot recounts the life of a single hero during the Revolutionary War. Mel Gibson stars as a fictional historical figure who loses his home at the outset of the film and fights against the British as a renegade soldier. Along the way he gathers followers, faces the pain of losing his family, and finding vengeance against his arch enemy. Cinematically, the film uses historical realism, fashioning costumes and sets that reflect the 18th century Americas. Furthermore, we hear British accents and southern American accents from the characters. Yet the narrative of the film is historical fiction. Mel Gibson’s character may have been based on a real person, but in the film, he is not aligned with a particular man from the Revolutionary War. Many of the events, though, occurred in that time, and other characters act as historical persons, such as General Cornwallis.

The director encourages the viewer to identify with the militia, the protagonists of the film, who fight against the British with guerilla tactics. They appear as a rag-tag and rough bunch, but likable and most of all noble. They do not conceded to the “formal” practices of warfare but seek to kill quickly and effectively. The director portrays the British army, especially its generals, as unlikable, proud, and oppressive. The battle between the British and the settlers manifests itself in a representative scale through Mel Gibson and his enemy Tavington, who killed his wife and robbed his home. We see the entire conflict between two countries in the conflict between two individuals.

The most famous scenes center on the tension between these two men. First, the “axe hacking scene,” where Gibson and his gang sneak attack a squad of troops in the woods, shows Gibson chopping into the back of a dead soldier, clearly to an excessive extent. At the end, he is covered in blood, unaware of his mania, and stands off the body in a daze. The viewer knows this reaction stems from the loss of his family, thanks to Tavington, and expresses the character’s rage. Furthermore, it seems both justified and right but also excessive, as the scene makes most people uncomfortable.

The humor of Gibson and his militia lightens up the film, especially when they use it against the enemy. Blowing up their ship, stealing the general’s dogs, and confusing the troops all garners a laugh that eases the mood and satisfies the viewer. Yet the movie contains real violence too. We see the British remains in a town of woman and children killed and hanged. While we do not actually see their murders, the director shows the results of the attack and leaves violence to the imagination. This is an interesting tactic, and move the viewer in ways that explicit battle does not.

The final scene during the Battle of Cowpens marks the climax of the film, the point of ultimate justice. Who will win, Gibson or Tavington? The suspense builds as the two fight their way through the bloody battle field and finally confront one another. Tavington on horse back, charges Gibson who thrusts the bayonet through Tavington’s neck and kills him. In this scene, Gibson also runs with an American flag, representing the victory and pride of the favored country. The movie thus employs classic narrative elements of conflict on a macro and micro scale, yet includes an underdog aspect that viewers enjoy. The violence appears both real and excessive but the latter, I think, contributes to the story and the characters. It is not violence for violence’s sake. This film would benefit a humanities study most by analyzing its nationalistic message and questions of morality in the light of a man losing his family.

American Revolution Dbq Essay

By the eve of the revolution the colonists had developed a sense of identity and unity as Americans, but suspicions in each other prolonged their ability to unify as colonists. Never the less these suspicions were removed when the colonists band together to fight for independence and the preservation of their right. To gain and preserve their freedom it was essential that the colonists put aside their differences to unite in the unlikeliest of events, like the French and Indian War, when they allied with the British. In1754, the first year of the war, a cartoon published in Philadelphia by Benjamin Franklin depicting a disbanded snake, it was meant to encourage the colonies to unify(Document A).

Argumentative Essay On Patriots

Argument Essay Have you ever heard of the New England Patriots? I’m sure you have and I’m sure you know that they are good but do you know the key to their success? Well unfortunately it’s cheating. THe Patriots have been playing unfairly in the NFL for years.

A challenging question to answer as an American Christian is whether the American Revolution was biblical or not. It is clear in the Bible the expectations God put forth as being the roles of both the government and obedient citizens. The big question is if the founding fathers of America were biblically justified by the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. There is a difference between being obedient to a government and being in a position where the government expects its people to commit sin.

Themes In My Brother Sam Is Dead

The majority of people during the American Revolution fought for liberty without realizing the actual cost and brutal reality of war. In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead, the Meeker family consisting of a Father name Life, a Mother named Susannah, a rebellious teen named Sam, and a conflicted teen named Tim, journey through the life of colonists owning a tavern during the Revolutionary War. Sam departs from his family to fight alongside the Patriots going against his Father, a Tory. War brings a lot of terrible things, but some examples are families splitting, clash of generation, and an overall theme of principle vs reality. The soldiers who fought in the war thought they were fighting for liberty, when really they caused havoc and awfulness.

The American President Movie Essay

The movie, The American President, depicts several reliable roles that the president performs, as well as, some of the aspects of our political system. It is a romantic comedy that takes place in the White House, during primary season. The president, Andrew Shepperd, is a widower, with a daughter, who is hoping to be reelected and pass two bills. One related to gun control and the other on fuel restrictions. While watching the movie, I noticed several key roles that the president played; all of which gave him the qualities of a realistic president.

Sons Of Liberty

In fact, most people believe that the Sons of Liberty were very deceitful, and destroyed economy in Boston, as well as property. To further prove the point that many people dislike the Sons of Liberty, the British soldiers often referred to the Sons of Liberty as the “Sons of Violence” to give them an inauspicious reputation. The Sons of Liberty even had the audacity to defy the king, which was seen as treason back then. However, the outcome of what the Sons of Liberty fought for, far outweighed any wrongdoings they may have committed. The Sons of Liberty were fighting for a sapient cause which was the liberty of the colonists.

Historical Accuracy In The Patriot

The Patriot is a movie filmed displaying the time of the American Revolution, it is a very historically inaccurate film that features few historical accuracies. The Patriot offers inaccurate character portrayal, cultural details and social details. The few dainty accuracies of the film include apparel, battle occurence, and gun usage. As the movie progresses many parts throughout the film do not align with proper historical accuracy. The inaccuracies may seem true to the common eye but with proper intel it is clearly seen to be erroneous.

The Patriot Movie Analysis

J.D. Vance: The Math on Ukraine Doesn’t Add Up

A photograph of a large stack of tube-shaped artillery shells, stretching out of the frame in every direction.

By J. D. Vance

Mr. Vance, a Republican, is the junior senator from Ohio.

President Biden wants the world to believe that the biggest obstacle facing Ukraine is Republicans and our lack of commitment to the global community. This is wrong.

Ukraine’s challenge is not the G.O.P.; it’s math. Ukraine needs more soldiers than it can field, even with draconian conscription policies. And it needs more matériel than the United States can provide. This reality must inform any future Ukraine policy, from further congressional aid to the diplomatic course set by the president.

The Biden administration has applied increasing pressure on Republicans to pass a supplemental aid package of more than $60 billion to Ukraine. I voted against this package in the Senate and remain opposed to virtually any proposal for the United States to continue funding this war. Mr. Biden has failed to articulate even basic facts about what Ukraine needs and how this aid will change the reality on the ground.

The most fundamental question: How much does Ukraine need and how much can we actually provide? Mr. Biden suggests that a $60 billion supplemental means the difference between victory and defeat in a major war between Russia and Ukraine. That is also wrong. $60 billion is a fraction of what it would take to turn the tide in Ukraine’s favor. But this is not just a matter of dollars. Fundamentally, we lack the capacity to manufacture the amount of weapons Ukraine needs us to supply to win the war.

Consider our ability to produce 155-millimeter artillery shells. Last year, Ukraine’s then defense minister assessed that their base line requirement for these shells is over four million per year, but said they could fire up to seven million if that many were available. Since the start of the conflict, the United States has gone to great lengths to ramp up production of 155-millimeter shells. We’ve roughly doubled our capacity and can now produce 360,000 per year — less than a tenth of what Ukraine says it needs. The administration’s goal is to get this to 1.2 million — 30 percent of what’s needed — by the end of 2025. This would cost the American taxpayers dearly while yielding an unpleasantly familiar result: failure abroad.

Just this week, the top American military commander in Europe argued that absent further security assistance, Russia could soon have a 10-to-1 artillery advantage over Ukraine. What didn’t gather as many headlines is that Russia’s current advantage is at least 5 to 1, even after all the money we have poured into the conflict. Neither of these ratios plausibly lead to Ukrainian victory.

Proponents of American aid to Ukraine have argued that our approach has been a boon to our own economy, creating jobs here in the factories that manufacture weapons. But our national security interests can be — and often are — separate from our economic interests. The notion that we should prolong a bloody and gruesome war because it’s been good for American business is grotesque. We can and should rebuild our industrial base without shipping its products to a foreign conflict.

The story is the same when we look at other munitions. Take the Patriot missile system — our premier air defense weapon. It’s of such importance in this war that Ukraine’s foreign minister has specifically demanded them. That’s because in March alone, Russia reportedly launched over 3,000 guided aerial bombs, 600 drones and 400 missiles at Ukraine. To fend off these attacks, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and others have indicated they need thousands of Patriot interceptors per year. The problem is this: The United States only manufactures 550 every year. If we pass the supplemental aid package currently being considered in Congress, we could potentially increase annual production to 650, but that’s still less than a third of what Ukraine requires.

These weapons are not only needed by Ukraine. If China were to set its sights on Taiwan, the Patriot missile system would be critical to its defense. In fact, the United States has promised to send Taiwan nearly $900 million worth of Patriot missiles, but delivery of those weapons and other essential resources has been severely delayed, partly because of shortages caused by the war.

If that sounds bad, Ukraine’s manpower situation is even worse. Here are the basics: Russia has nearly four times the population of Ukraine. Ukraine needs upward of half a million new recruits, but hundreds of thousands of fighting-age men have already fled the country. The average Ukrainian soldier is roughly 43 years old , and many soldiers have already served two years at the front with few, if any, opportunities to stop fighting. After two years of conflict, there are some villages with almost no men left. The Ukrainian military has resorted to coercing men into service, and women have staged protests to demand the return of their husbands and fathers after long years of service at the front. This newspaper reported one instance in which the Ukrainian military attempted to conscript a man with diagnosed mental disability.

Many in Washington seem to think that hundreds of thousands of young Ukrainians have gone to war with a song in their heart and are happy to label any thought to the contrary Russian propaganda. But major newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic are reporting that the situation on the ground in Ukraine is grim.

These basic mathematical realities were true, but contestable, at the outset of the war. They were obvious and incontestable a year ago, when American leadership worked closely with Mr. Zelensky to undertake a disastrous counteroffensive. The bad news is that accepting brute reality would have been most useful last spring, before the Ukrainians launched that extremely costly and unsuccessful military campaign. The good news is that even now, a defensive strategy can work. Digging in with old-fashioned ditches, cement and land mines are what enabled Russia to weather Ukraine’s 2023 counteroffensive. Our allies in Europe could better support such a strategy, as well. While some European countries have provided considerable resources, the burden of military support has thus far fallen heaviest on the United States.

By committing to a defensive strategy, Ukraine can preserve its precious military manpower, stop the bleeding and provide time for negotiations to commence. But this would require both American and Ukrainian leadership to accept that Mr. Zelensky’s stated goals for the war — a return to 1991 boundaries — are fantastical.

The White House has said time and again that they can’t negotiate with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. This is absurd. The Biden administration has no viable plan for the Ukrainians to win this war. The sooner Americans confront this truth, the sooner we can fix this mess and broker for peace.
