PPT Slide Design for Essay Outline

The Essay Outline PowerPoint Template is designed with the objective of helping writers present their essay. The Essay outline is a skeleton, a platform on which you can build your own writing and come up with your own thoughts. These outlines help you (the presenter) structure ideas and thoughts logically to build towards a meaningful and strong conclusion, which is the main point of presenting an essay. In fact, the outline is the main aspect towards writing an effective essay too.

This essay outline template is ideal for content writers and ghost writers when they need to present an essay pitch. It follows best practices structure and provides professional presentation layouts to accommodate content (texts, images, visuals and videos) in a way that make it easy to create a document style presentation.

The Essay Outline Template sections included are:

  • Introduction : Containing Background and Thesis statement slides, this section should get the reader’s attention – intended to ask a leading question; relay something enticing about the subject in a manner that commands attention. Then State the thesis – what you are going to discuss.
  • Essay Body : The body is the largest part of the essay. While creating your Essay outline, list down the supporting points you are supposed to cover when writing the essay. Make sure that you provide the main idea of the topic you will be discussing. Each Body supporting paragraph should reveal an argument that support the thesis statement and ague with Evidence and Examples.
  • Conclusions : The conclusions section summarizes the essay idea. It is the evaluation of the statements made and the arguments given. The conclusion therefore refers to the thesis statement of the work.
  • References : Referencing is a system that allows you to acknowledge the contributions and work of others in your writing by citing your sources. A feature of academic writing is that it contains references to the words, information and ideas of others. A well done research always includes investigating other authors about the state of the art of the topic or thoughts about the thesis statement.

Writing an essay implies a formal writing technique that can be mapped to more professional con complicated works, for example an academic thesis. Check our thesis presentation tips in the article  How To Do a Proper Thesis Defense Using the Right PowerPoint Presentation.

Impress professional audiences with the Essay Outline PowerPoint Template. User the structure as your base and transmit your message with the proper visual support and documentation. Check out our wide variety of Education PowerPoint Templates .

This editable PowerPoint lesson (17 slides in PPT format) covers the notion of academic argument, audience awareness, and the structure of a 5-paragraph essay (an introduction, three body paragraphs with well-developed topic sentences and key details that support the main idea, and a conclusion). It introduces the idea that English academic writing is direct in nature and should use formal language. Students will evaluate two model essays. They will also use a graphic organizer to brainstorm ideas for an essay of their own where they will have to argue an opinion.

The Zip Folder contains the PPT file, as well as the terms of use with a link to a copy of the resource in google drive.

  • When my sister and I were growing up, my grandmother always had chickens, turkeys, and guineas in her backyard. She usually kept them penned up, but sometimes she let them out to peck in the dirt. One day my sister discovered they were not as harmless as they looked. She was reading on the back steps and not paying attention to the yard birds. Suddenly she felt something land on her head. As she began screaming
  • I remember making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every day after school when I was younger. I loved peanut butter and jelly sandwiches because they were tasty and easy to make. I made my sandwich when I came home from school every day.
  • The first thing I did to make my peanut butter and jelly sandwich was to get out all the ingredients and utensils that I would need. I pulled out the peanut butter
  • Expository writing explains or informs by giving reasons, information, explanations, or steps in a process.
  • Expository writing should clearly explain the topic.
  • Expository should always include a main idea, sufficient supporting details, and a conclusion.
  • Key words EXPLAIN or HOW TO
  • We need school rules because they are important. Rules help to keep us safe and promote responsibility. They should be designed to benefit all students and to help the school be a better place to learn. However, some of the rules we have do not fit into either category, and they need to be changed. If I could change some of the school rules, I would change the tardy rule, the book bag rule, and the fifteen minute rule.
  • On Monday morning last week, I got to school as usual and was listening to the end of my favorite song on my CD player in my car. I had only been there a few minutes when an assistant principal opened my door to my car and told me that I could not sit in the car once I got to school. I tried to explain to him that I was just listening to a CD, but he got all huffy and told me to get out of my car and go to the office.
  • Persuasive writing is designed to persuade.
  • The goal for this type of writing is to influence the actions or thoughts of others by giving examples, reasons, or opinions.
  • To be effective, persuasive writing must provide a clear position on an issue and then include logical reasons and/or examples that fully support that position.
  • Key words CONVINCE or PERSUADE
  • Dear Mom and Dad, I need your help. I want to buy a car, but I dont have enough money of my own to buy the one I want. I realize that owning a car would be a big responsibility for me, but it is one that I readily accept. Having more responsibility will make me a better person and allow me to prove that I can handle important obligations. If you will help me to buy the car, I will take full responsibility for servicing and maintaining it, buying gas, and paying required fees involved in owning a car.
  • Dear Mom and Dad, My friend Johnny just got a new car, and it is really cool. The car is a red Mustang with a new paint job and new leather upholstery. The car is not new, but it is new to Johnny. He took me for a ride, and it was fun. The car is also a convertible. We had the top down until it started raining, and we had to stop to put the top up. One of the snaps that is supposed to hold the top came off, and Johnny got really wet driving home. I would love to have a car like this.
  • ____Think of an incident when you were proud of yourself. Tell the story of what happened and include the details and results.
  • ____ Some friends are going to the beach for a week this summer and have invited you. There will be no adults going, so you need to convince your parents to allow you to go. Write an essay giving your reasons to persuade them.
  • ____ Think about a time when you did something that you knew was wrong. Explain the reasons you did it anyway.
  • _____ My first day of high school was awful for several reasons. I kept getting lost because I did not know the buildings. I was late to classes and was embarrassed to enter late. I spilled my food on my new top and had to walk around all day with that spot. I did not know what to expect, and everything seemed wrong.
  • _____ I heard the sound when I woke that morning. I lay in the bed and tried to decide what it was. I had never heard it before, so I decided to get out of bed and investigate. I went into the bathroom to take a shower, but when I turned on the water, the sound got even louder.
  • _____ Smoking should be illegal in restaurants and other enclosed areas. Because second-hand smoke is more harmful to those who inhale it than the actual act of smoking is to the smoker, it should not be allowed, especially in buildings. Allowing smoking in enclosed areas is the equivalent to signing the death warrants for those who are forced to inhale the toxic fumes of others.
  • It is very important to understand what mode you are writing in, but it is just as important to stay on task or topic.
  • First, ask yourself what the prompt wants you to write about.
  • Second, keep that the focus of your brainstorming and planning.
  • Third, write your essay making sure you are doing what the prompt ask of you.
  • Finally, revise to make sure you have taken out any sentences that get off task or topic.
  • I will never forget the Christmas of 1994 when I was only eight years old. My older sister, younger brother, and I had been wanting bicycles for months. We made our wishes for Christmas clear often. I even remember our discussing it during Thanksgiving dinner however, the day after Thanksgiving something happened to make us forget about our material desires for Christmas.
  • Growing up was fun for me because I came from a large family with many sisters and brothers. As the third of eight children, I was very proud of my family. A family as large as ours was unusual in our fairly small town. Our unusual last name added to our being well-known in our town.
  • At my school, we have many rules for students to follow. We have rules telling us what we can and cannot do in the classroom. We have rules telling us what we can and cannot do in the halls. We even have rules telling us what we can and cannot do outside the school building on the school grounds. Of all these rules, I do not agree with the rules that tell us what we can and cannot do in the halls and on school grounds.
  • Out of all the rules at our school, the ones that I dislike the most concern the dress code. We should be allowed to dress any way that we like. The dress code does not allow us to dress individually and express our creativity. I think most teachers would agree that creativity is important and should not be suppressed. Just think about what would happen if students could no longer be creative.
  • Dear Mom and Dad, Since I have been saving my money for so long to buy a car, I hope you will agree to help me. I dont have quite enough saved yet, and I would be forever in your debt if you will help me buy the car I wantI have worked very hard to save the money, and I will continue to work to be able to pay for the upkeep on my car. I will be very responsible and buy my own gas and oil
  • Dear Mom and Dad, I really want a car. I have saved my money, but I dont have enough. My friend Susie got her parents to help her buy a car. Susie has proven to be a really careful driver. She obeys all the traffic signals and is careful to look both ways before pulling out into traffic. She got a job, and I want to get a job too. A job would help me buy the things I want and need so I want have to be dependent on you
  • Friends are important to everyone. A friend is someone who keeps my confidences. She would not repeat things I have told her to others. When I am talking to a friend, I do not worry about what I am saying. I should be able to say what I think and how I feel. I do not tell others what my friends tell me, and I do not want them to share my feelings to others
  • Friends are special people, and I pick mine carefully. A friend does not have to be perfect, but there are some important qualities they should have. A friend should be someone who can listen, someone who is positive, and someone who is loyal
  • Wearing seatbelts should be required in all private vehicles because they keep all the occupants much safer during an accident. Wearing seatbelts keeps the occupants from being thrown from the car and being killed by something outside the car
  • Wearing seatbelts should be required, but I cannot stand them. They do not fit properly, so they are grossly uncomfortable. Seatbelts are constructed so that they fit too close to my neck, and they have rubbed me raw by the time I get to my destination.
  • Purpose Writing always has a purpose to entertain, to inform, to persuade.
  • Audience Who is reading what you are writing.
  • Appropriate Language Formal language is the type of language you use in writing. Conversational English is not acceptable in written English.
  • Uses complete sentences
  • Uses complex sentence structure and proper punctuation.
  • Uses correct spelling and standard words.
  • Does not usually contain contractions.
  • Uses clear, precise words.
  • Another vicious fowl was my grandmothers bantam rooster. He was a tiny rooster, but he had big, sharp spurs on his legs, and part of his legs were covered with feathers. He did not like anyone buy my grandmother. He would try to flog anyone who got separated from Grandmother while he was loose in the yard. My sister was terrified of the rooster. When she went into the yard, she would hang onto the pocket of my grandmothers apron. However, she loved to collect feathers
  • Another bird mean as a snake was my grandmaws bantie rooster. He has big old spurs on his legs. Part of his legs was covered with feathers. He didnt like noboby but Grandmaw. Hed try to get everybody while he be loose. My sister were scared to death of him. When she had went in the yard she would hang on grandmaw. One day she was fixin to pick up a feather
  • I wont go to the bask your homeboy is throwing.
  • I didnt expect to lay eyes on you when I got back.
  • Hes no dummy hes got lots of smarts.
  • When he run in front on the car, we had thought that dog was a goner.
  • Yall come to see us.
  • If I come by McDonalds, will you hook me up with chow?
  • I aint going nowhere with you.
  • Brainstorming using a web.
  • Brainstorming using a list.
  • Narrowing the details.
  • The magic number is three.
  • Expository Three good details or examples that explain your topic.
  • Narrative Three main events to form your story.
  • Persuasive Three good reasons supported with examples or data.
  • For a narrative essay, you want to give general information that leads into your story, or you may choose to use the introductory paragraph to begin your story.
  • Leading I have many pleasant memories of growing up.
  • Beginning One autumn day, I got the idea to play cops and robbers when I found two really long sticks in the woods behind my grandparents house.
  • The next sentences should tell more about the students memory.
  • I have many pleasant memories of growing up. Most center around playing at home with my brother and sister.
  • The last sentence of your introductory paragraph should be your thesis statement.
  • A thesis statement is the controlling idea for the entire essay.
  • To write a thesis statement, you must first determine the focus of your essay.

How to Check Word Count for Your Essays in Word [For Students]

Many academic programs require you to write essays, and it's crucial to perform well because essays play a significant role in your overall assessment. Whether applying to college or completing assignments in your courses, writing strong essays is essential. You'll need to craft compelling essays throughout your academic journey, from admission essays that make you stand out to course assignments that contribute to your grades. These essays often come with a word limit that you must meet. In this article, we will guide you on how to check the word count in Word for students.

How many Words do you need in an Essay?

Throughout your academic journey, you'll be expected to write essays that vary greatly in length and complexity. From high school assignments requiring a concise 300-word response to graduate school theses that may reach 5,000 words or more, you'll find yourself adapting to a range of word limits and formats.

Here's an overview of typical word count ranges for various academic essays:

High School Essay : 300–1,000 words

College Admission Essay : 200–650 words

Undergraduate College Essay : 1,500–5,000 words

Graduate School Admission Essay : 500–1,000 words

Graduate School Essay/Thesis : 2,500–6,000 words

While these word count ranges provide a general guideline, it's essential to remember that the content's quality is more important than the quantity. Essays that meet or exceed the word limit may still fall short if they lack clarity, coherence, or depth. Conversely, a shorter essay that's well-organized and thoughtfully written can make a stronger impression.

When considering essay length, keep these factors in mind:

Purpose and Scope : Short essays usually focus on a specific topic, while longer essays require more comprehensive analysis and discussion. Determine the purpose of your essay to guide its length.

Intended Audience : Consider who will be reading your essay. Some readers may prefer detailed exploration, while others may only need a brief summary.

Format and Guidelines : Academic essays often come with specific guidelines for length. For instance, high school English essays may be around 400–600 words, while undergraduate essays in the social sciences and humanities often range from 2,500 to 3,000 words.

While the number of words can indicate an essay's scope, it's crucial to focus on structure, relevance, and engagement. Essays that are well-crafted, with a clear thesis, supporting evidence, and thoughtful analysis, are more likely to earn higher marks, regardless of the word count.

How to Check Word Count in Word for Students Writing Essay Assignments

Working on a thesis or research paper is already a challenging and intellectually demanding task, especially with specific rules and regulations regarding word counts for different academic styles. Some academic styles require you to report the number of words including or excluding certain parts of your work. Students often struggle with figuring out how to calculate word count, whether to include the abstract or combine footnotes. However, there's no need to stress over this, as Microsoft Word offers a feature to assist with this. It may be a bit tricky, but it's available. Let's take a look at a few examples.

How to Check the Word Count in Word Excluding the Abstract of the Paper:

Now, let's say your professor asks you to remove the in-text citations from your document, which are also included in the original word count. In such a case, manually going through each citation and removing them from the word count can be time-consuming. However, with some wildcards and the replace tool in Microsoft Word, this task can be done quickly.

Step 1 : Open the research paper in Microsoft Word.

Step 2 : To access the Replace feature, go to the Home tab and click on "Replace" to open the Find and Replace dialog. Alternatively, use the "CTRL + H" shortcut key.

Step 3 : In the Find and Replace dialog, click on "More > >" to view more options available.

Step 4 : In the Search options section, check the "Use wildcards" option.

Step 5 : Now, go back to the "Find what" field and enter the following:  \(*\)

Step 6 : Leave the "Replace with" field blank and then click on the "Replace All" button.

Step 7 : Microsoft Word will notify you about the number of replacements that were made. Click on "OK".

Step 8 : Once completed, exit the Find and Replace dialog box by clicking on "Close".

Step 9 : Now, you can view the word count either at the bottom left in the Status Bar or visit the Reference tab and click on "Word Count" to get a more comprehensive view of the word count of your document.

How to Check Word Count in Word Including Footnotes,Endnotes and Text Boxes in a Paper:

To ensure the inclusion of footnotes, endnotes, and text boxes in the word count, follow these steps:

Step 1 : Open your essay in Microsoft Word and navigate to the "Review" tab.

Step 2 : Click on the "Word Count" button in the reference ribbon menu.

Step 3 : The Word Count dialog box will appear, displaying all the statistics of your essay.

Step 4 : Check the "Include textboxes, footnotes, and endnotes" checkbox to ensure that the word counter considers textboxes, footnotes, and endnotes as well.

If you need to perform a simple word count for a selection, use your mouse to highlight the text you want to count, and you'll see the word count of the selected text at the bottom left in the Status Bar.

How to Check Word Count in Word Using Shortcuts

Need to quickly check your word count in Word ? There's a handy shortcut! Simply press Ctrl + Shift + G on your keyboard, and a window will pop up displaying your document's word count, character count.

As a student, it's essential to pay attention to word count, not just to ensure you meet the minimum requirement but also because some professors penalize you for exceeding it. Thanks to advanced writing tools, keeping track of word count has become quite easy. Simply glancing at the status bar gives me a glimpse of the word count, but if I ever need more detailed statistics, using a keyboard shortcut provides quick access to the word count. Then, simply press the "ESC" key to exit and continue writing. Having a word counter in your writing software provides great convenience.

Tips to Write Essays within the Word Limit

Reducing an essay's word count while maintaining its impact can be challenging, especially when we consider that humans now officially have the attention span of a goldfish. According to a Microsoft study, we lose concentration after eight seconds—shorter than the nine-second attention span of a goldfish. Given this, communication must adapt to capture the reader's attention quickly. If you need to shorten your essay to meet a specific word limit, here are some practical techniques to help:

Start with AI Assistance

WPS AI : This AI tool can be your first step in writing or rewriting content to meet word count limits. If your essay is too long, WPS AI can suggest rewording or condensing, allowing you to maintain clarity and coherence while reducing the overall length.

Tips for Cutting Words

Reword Sentences: Look for long-winded sentences and find ways to reword them more succinctly. For example, "This means methods of communication must adapt in order for us to capture our audience’s attention" can be shortened to "Communication methods must adapt to capture our audience’s attention."

Remove Redundancy : Identify repetitive information or phrases and remove them. If you're saying the same thing in different ways, consolidate.

Eliminate Extraneous Words : Words like "very," "extremely," "actually," and others can often be removed without changing the meaning of a sentence. Similarly, phrases like "in order to" can be shortened to "to."

Focus on Active Voice : Active voice generally requires fewer words and is more direct. Rewrite passive voice sentences to make them more concise and impactful.

Use Abbreviations : In many cases, abbreviations can help reduce word count without sacrificing clarity. Common examples include "MD" for "Managing Director," "e.g." for "for example," and "SEO" for "Search Engine Optimization."

Check for Unnecessary Spacing and Hyphenation : Sometimes, words can be shortened by eliminating extra spaces or using hyphenation. For instance, "year on year" can be hyphenated to "year-on-year," reducing word count without losing meaning.

Edit Ruthlessly : Read through your essay with a critical eye. Cut out anything that doesn't add value to your argument or that deviates from the main topic. Be willing to remove content, even if you like it, if it doesn't serve the essay's purpose.

Reducing word count while maintaining content quality requires a combination of techniques. From rewording sentences to removing redundancy, many strategies can help you meet word limits without sacrificing the essay's impact. Remember that the goal is not just to meet the word count but to create an engaging, clear, and effective piece of writing. Whether using AI tools like WPS AI or manually editing your content, the key is to be concise, focused, and clear.

Organisation An essay has three main parts: • 1. An introductory paragraph • 2. A body (at least one, but usually two or more paragraphs) • 3. A concluding paragraph

The introductory paragraph An introduction has four purposes: • 1. It introduces the topic of the essay. • 2. It gives a general background of the topic • 3. It often indicates the overall “plan” of the essay • 4. It should arouse the reader’s interest in the topic. Consists of two parts: • 1. A few general statements • 2. A thesis statement

General statements • Introduce the topic of the essay • Give background information on the topic

The thesis statement The most important sentence in the introduction. • States the main topic • Often lists the subdivisions of the topic or subtopics • May indicate the method of organisation of the entire paper • Is usually the last sentence in the introductory paragraph

Introduction Any person who has lived in the twentieth century has seen a lot of changes take place in almost all areas of human existence. Some people are excited by the challenges that these changes offer; others want to return to the simpler life-style of the past. The twentieth century had certain advantages such as a higher standard of living for many, but it also had some disadvantages such as a polluted environment, the depersonalisation of human relationships and the weakening of spiritual values.

Examples of thesis statements with no subtopics mentioned • Being the oldest son has more disadvantages than advantages • Young people in my culture have less freedom than young people in the United States. • The large movement of people from rural to urban areas has major effects on cities.

A thesis statement with subtopics • The large movement of people from rural to urban areas has major effects on a city’s ability to provide housing, employment and adequate sanitation services.

Devices used when listing subtopics in a thesis statement • Colon (:) Prejudice arises from three basic causes: childhood conditioning, ignorance and fear. • Correlative conjunctions (both...and, not only...but also, neither...nor, either...or) Young people in my culture have less freedom than young people in the United States not only in their choice of life-style but also in their choice of careers.

Put the sentences in the following introductory paragraphs in the right order

Which method of organisation, chronological or comparison and contrast is indicated? • Beginning in World War II and continuing through the period of economic boom, the status of women in Xanadu has changed remarkably. • Although the status of women in Xanadu has improved in recent years, it is still very low when compared to the status of women in the countries of the industrialised world.

Thesis statements where both the method of organisation and the major subdivisions of the topic are indicated: • The status of women in Xanadu has changed remarkably in recent years due to increased educational opportunities and change in the country’s laws. • The status of women in Xanadu has improved in recent years in the areas of economic independence, political rights, educational opportunities and social status. How many paragraphs? Which topics?

Analyse the following thesis statements. 1. Locate the main topic and subtopics in each of the thesis statements 2. Underline the subtopics. 3. Draw a circle around the words or punctuation marks that are used to introduce the subtopics.

Paragraph Consists of 1. a topic sentence 2. supporting sentences

Task • 1. Decide which of the following sentences is the topic sentence. • 2. Decide the order of supporting sentences.

Unity • Every good paragraph has unity, i.e. only onemain idea is discussed, which is introduced in the topic sentence. • Every supporting sentence must directly explain or prove the main idea that is stated in the topic sentence. • Do not write supporting sentences that are ̎off the topic ̎, i.e. irrelevant sentences.

Task • 1. Find paragraphs. • 2. Underline the first sentence of each paragraph.

Coherence • Latin verb cohere means ̎hold together ̎. Coherence in writing means: • Logical and smooth movement from one sentence/paragraph to the next. • No sudden jumps.

Four ways to achieve coherence • 1. repeat key nouns • 2. use pronouns • 3. use transition signals • 4. arrange sentences in logical order

Cohesion 1. Well constructed sentences 2. No unnecessary repetition

Task • Read through both paragraphs about gold: one with and the other one without coherence. • Read through the paragraph and replace the pronoun with the key noun English wherever needed • Read through the third paragraph and replace some of the pronouns with nouns.

Transitions signals • Words : first, second, next, finally, therefore, however, etc. • Phrases: in conclusion, on the other hand, as a result, etc. • Traffic signs that tell the reader when to go forward, turn, slow down and stop.

They tell the reader when you are giving • a similar idea (similarly, moreover, furthermore, in addition); • an opposite idea ( on the other hand, however, in contrast); • an example (for example); • a result (as a result); • a conclusion (in conclusion).

Task: add transition signals • Paragraph • A difference among the world’s seas and oceans is that the salinity varies in different climate zones. The baltic Sea in Northern Europe is only one-fourth as saline as the Red Sea in the Middle East. There are reasons for this. In warm climates water evaporates rapidly. The concentration of salt is greater. The surrounding land is dry and does not contribute much fresh water to dilute the salty sea water. In cold climate zones, water evaporates slowly. The runoff created by melting snow adds a considerable amount of fresh water to dilute the saline sea water.

The Concluding Paragraph • 1. A summary of the main points or restatement of your thesis in different words • 2. Your final comment on the subject, based on the information you have provided

An example of a concluding paragraph • In short, although the twentieth century has indeed given some of us a lot of advantages by making us richer, healthier and freer to enjoy our lives, it has, in my opinion, not made us wiser. The twentieth century has also made our earth dirtier, our people less humane and our spiritual lives poorer. We wish to continue to enjoy the benefits of technological advancement because they free us to pursue our other interests and goals. However, we must make a concerted effort to preserve our natuaral environment for future generations.

Correct the mistakes • Parallel structure with correlative conjunctions 1 My sister not only gives the dog treats but she also brushes him twice a day.
