The movie was written by Dustin Lance Black, who also won an Oscar for his work.

'Ip Man' (2008)

biography movies on netflix

"Ip Man" and its three sequels are the ultimate compendium of the life and times of Ip Man, the grandmaster of Wing Chun and the teacher of Bruce Lee.

The stunning cinematography and choreography help to bring a unique visual style to these biographical films.

Good news, too. "Ip Man" two, three, and four are all also on Netflix, so you can watch the entire saga.

'The Social Network' (2010)

biography movies on netflix

Aaron Sorkin's masterful screenplay served as the basis for this film, which explores how Mark Zuckerberg created what would later be known as Facebook.

Jesse Eisenberg plays Zuckerberg, while Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, and Rooney Mara chip in with outstanding supporting performances, too. The movie competed for multiple Oscars, but ultimately only won for Sorkin's script despite David Fincher being a hot contender for best director.

'My Week With Marylin' (2011)

biography movies on netflix

There have been many biographical films and TV shows that have explored the life of Marilyn Monroe , but none match up to Michelle Williams' performance as the iconic actress.

This movie cleverly focuses on one week in 1956, when Monroe was shooting the 1957 film "The Prince and the Showgirl" with Laurence Olivier (played in this film by Kenneth Branagh).

While shooting the film in London, Monroe is escorted around the town by a young, hopeful filmmaker (Eddie Redmayne).

'The Iron Lady' (2011)

biography movies on netflix

Meryl Streep won her third Oscar for this biopic, winning best actress for playing Margaret Thatcher .

While the movie itself received luke-warm reviews, this is worth a watch for Streep's powerhouse performance alone as we are shown Thatcher's life from a young politician to her days as Prime Minister to the years when her health began to decline.

'Get on Up' (2011)

biography movies on netflix

The late, great Chadwick Boseman starred in multiple biopics, but his performance as James Brown in "Get on Up" is one of his very best.

This biopic tells the complete story of Brown's life as he rose from poverty to become one of the most iconic musicians of all time.

'Fruitvale Station' (2013)

biography movies on netflix

Michael B. Jordan made a name for himself with this heartbreaking and tragic movie following the story of Oscar Grant III.

The movie, which also stars fellow future MCU star Brie Larson, follows Oscar on the last day of 2008, which detailed how he was killed at the hands of police.

'Philomena' (2013)

biography movies on netflix

Steve Coogan traded in his comedy chops for more drama with this movie, which he also wrote (with Jeff Pope).

Coogan plays a journalist who agrees to take on the story of an elderly Irish woman's (Judi Dench) search for her long-lost son, who was taken away from her by nuns when she was forced to live in a convent.

Dench earned an Oscar nomination for her funny and moving performance.

'The Theory of Everything' (2014)

biography movies on netflix

This movie explores the lives of Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his now ex-wife Jane Hawking (Felicity Jones), from their times as university students to Hawking's diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and onwards.

Jones earned an Oscar nomination for her role while Redmayne won the Oscar for best actor.

'Legend' (2015)

biography movies on netflix

Another case of an actor's performance outshining their own film. In "Legend," Tom Hardy takes on the dual role of Kray twins, Ronnie and Reggie, as the film follows the rise and fall of the infamous gangsters.

Hardy is unrecognizable in both roles and this film is worth watching for him alone.

'Trumbo' (2015)

biography movies on netflix

Bryan Cranston earned his first and (so far) only Oscar nomination for his portrayal of blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, the man who wrote "Spartacus," "Roman Holiday" and "The Brave One."

This biopic follows Trumbo's early success in the industry to his eventual blacklisting in Hollywood for being a member of the USA's communist party and his career thereafter.

'Steve Jobs' (2015)

biography movies on netflix

Another killer script from Aaron Sorkin served as the basis for this quietly-thrilling look at Steve Jobs, the late creative who built Apple.

The movie cleverly focuses on three separate product launches in different years, showing the sort of person Jobs was at work and at home.

Despite a troubled production history, which saw a change of actors and directors more than once, the movie soars with Michael Fassbender in the lead role of Jobs. He and Kate Winslet were both nominated for Oscars.

'The Founder' (2016)

biography movies on netflix

This is the story of how one of the largest and most recognizable brands in the world was made: McDonald's.

Michael Keaton stars as the shady, ruthless, and ambitious businessman Ray Kroc, who stole the McDonald brothers' fast food business out from under them.

'The Two Popes' (2019)

biography movies on netflix

While a movie about two Popes chatting for two hours might not sound thrilling, it actually is.

Written by "The Theory of Everything" scribe Anthony McCarten, Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins star as the future Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI, respectively.

The two men engage in conversational battles of wit, principles, and conflicting opinions as Pope Benedict's time as the head of the Catholic Church comes to an end.

'Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile' (2019)

biography movies on netflix

In Zac Efron's darkest ever role , the "High School Musical" alum plays serial killer Ted Bundy.

Told from the point of view of his longtime girlfriend Liz (Lily Collins), who refused to believe the truth about Bundy, we learn of the horrific nature of one of America's most infamous killers.

'Mank' (2020)

biography movies on netflix

Nominated for 10 Oscars and winning two , David Fincher's expertly-crafted movie explores the life of Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and how he wrote "Citizen Kane."

Oldman earned an Oscar nomination for playing Mankiewicz, while Amanda Seyfried landed her first-ever Oscar nod for her supporting performance as actress Marion Davies.

Fincher presents this story in the format of a 1940s movie itself, complete with reel-change cigarette burns, which indicate when a film reel needs to be changed.

Disclosure: Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Business Insider's parent company, Axel Springer, is a Netflix board member.

10 Biographical Documentaries to Watch on Netflix Now That You’ve Finished ‘Harry & Meghan'

A different kind of reality program.

Everyone has their own story: in the fast-paced and glamorized world of film and TV, authenticity is needed. Where dramatizations make good entertainment, sometimes a story is best told by the person who lived through it. Biographical documentaries encourage this. They have allowed people who have lived in extraordinary circumstances to claim agency over their narratives.

RELATED: 8 Filmmakers Who Have Made Both Great Fictional Films & Great Documentaries

These kinds of documentaries give us an intimate look into the truth of human lives, regardless of how exposed they may be. Where Harry & Meghan is a recent example of this, public figures are not the only ones whose stories deserve to be told. The beauty of Netflix is that there's a wide spectrum of biographical documentaries at the audience's fingertips that are guaranteed to captivate, entertain and move all.

'Sr' (2022)

Where the world may know Robert Downey Jr. , this story is about his late father, Robert Downey Sr. , the visionary filmmaker who made waves in Hollywood in the 1960s with his absurdist and non-conventional art. Filmed during his final years, Sr. pays tribute to all aspects of this artist's life and expansive career.

A picture set in black and white, this movie is an intimate and deeply personal story of a father and son. Where it features Downey Sr.'s journey through Parkinson's disease, this isn't a gloom-ridden watch but one filled with heart . With quippy banter between the duo and comedic attempts of Downey Sr. taking control over the camera work, audiences are given an inside look at their poignant discussions of addiction, fatherhood, and grief.

'Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey' (2022)

Similar to the key message in her book, she hopes to encourage the future generation to find their voice and use it.

'Ladies First' (2018)

Deepika Kumari was a girl born in poverty who found a love for archery in her youth. Ladies First chronicles her inspirational journey to success as she joined the Tata Archery Academy and ultimately became one of the world's greatest archers.

Where this documentary comments on rural India's economic hardships, it's mainly the story of a woman who broke the social barriers of her deeply patriarchal culture. Showing the highs and lows of her career, this documentary celebrates how Kumari's path actively challenged the ingrained cultural perception of a woman's inferiority to men. Ladies First honors her ground-breaking achievements and highlights how she has inspired many more.

'Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond' (2017)

With hours of behind-the-scenes footage from the set of the 1999 biopic Man On The Moon , this documentary centers around Jim Carey reflecting on his dedication to absorbing the persona of legendary comedian Andy Kauffman .

An incredibly moving and heartfelt love story, this documentary tackles the historical struggles of the LGBTQ+ community and its long-lasting effects of the years of ingrained shame. Documenting the process behind Beyoncé 's renowned Coachella performance in 2018, Homecoming: A Film By Beyoncé is a celebration and homage to Black culture , particularly Black feminism.

Canonized as "Beychella" by her fan base, this performance was praised for its quality and power and its historical nature as Beyoncé was the first Black woman to headline the iconic music festival. As a result, this documentary features an amalgamation of behind-the-scenes footage, with an assortment of music styles and voice-over monologues that quotes legends from the likes of Nina Simone and Maya Angelou . It's a deeply poignant story that may make viewers weep yet still leave them smiling.

'The Defiant Ones' (2017')

5 best Netflix biopics to watch right now

Real people get the spotlight in these great biographical movies

Woman with popcorn bowl holding remote to watch Netflix on television

Netflix has dominated the biopic market for quite a while. Between dramatized movies of well-known figures, little-known moments in history, and true crime, there are plenty of real-life events and figures to draw from. Though Netflix originals have made a splash in the past decade, the streaming site also boasts a number of blockbuster biopics that fans are still talking about years later.

Many biopic movies are adapted from primary or secondary sources, like Maestro and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. So while these movies are fictionalized to some extent, deriving them from reliable accounts helps add a moderate level of authenticity. However, it’s best to take these movies with a grain of salt and do research before taking them too seriously. Here are some of the best biopics on Netflix you can stream right now.

The Imitation Game

The 2014 movie The Imitation Game takes viewers back to 1939. The film focuses on Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch): a mathematical genius tasked with breaking seemingly uncrackable Nazi codes for M16 (a British intelligence agency). Kiera Knightley also stars in the movie as Joan Clarke, Turing’s fellow analyst.

On top of tackling the brutality of Nazi Germany, there’s an LGBTQ+ component to the film that sheds light on the homophobia of the time period. Many people might not realize that Hitler went after LGBTQ+ and disabled individuals along with the Jewish population. This particular story points out that criminalizing identities didn’t end when the war did — not even in Britain. - XH

Maestro is Bradley Cooper's return to the director's chair ( if he believed in such things ) following the smash success that was A Star Is Born. In this biopic, Cooper also stars as the acclaimed American conductor/composer/multihyphenate Leonard Bernstein.

While the movie is certainly an examination of Bernstein's life, it's largely about Bernstein's relationship with his wife Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). Maestro has been nominated for four  Golden Globe awards  including nominations for Cooper and Mulligan's performances, so don't miss it now that it's free on Netflix. - MM

This biopic centers on Bayard Rustin, the architect of the momentous 1963 March on Washington — where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I have a dream” speech. Yet, Rustin was relegated to a footnote in history, mostly due to his homosexuality. As the activist, Colman Domingo gives a fiery performance that will likely draw many accolades during awards season.

The film chronicles how Rustin conceives and plans the largest nonviolent protest in the United States, joining forces with King (Aml Ameen) and other civil rights moment leaders like A. Philip Randolph (Glynn Turman) and Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. (Jeffrey Wright). - KW

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Netflix original Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom marked Chadwick Boseman’s last film — and it didn’t disappoint. Viola Davis plays Ma Rainey alongside Boseman’s Levee in this movie that centers on a recording session with Rainey and her band.

The 1927 movie spans one single day as blues singer Rainey records the song the film is named after. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom illustrates the insidious 1920s racism in both the music industry and society as a whole. Glynn Turman (Toledo), Colman Domingo (Cutler), and Michael Potts (Slow Drag) also star in the George C. Wolfe-directed movie. August Wilson wrote the original play that Ruben Santiago-Hudson adapted into the movie. - XH

The inspiring true story of athlete Diana Nyad is fictionalized and brought to life. Decades after giving up marathon swimming, 60-year-old Diana (Annette Bening) decides to take on an epic challenge that always eluded her: the 110 mile trek from Cuba to Florida, often referred to as the Mount Everest of swims.

Determined to become the first person to complete the swim without a shark cage, Diana begins a four-year training journey with the help of best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll (Jodie Foster) and a dedicated sailing team. - KW

14. The Angel (2018)

biography movies on netflix

Speaking of historical films always conjures up the image of the times that lie at least a hundred years prior to one’s own era. To be honest, what happened a decade ago is history too, though the most recent one. But let’s not get into that debate. My point is that if I tell you to watch a film that is set in the early 70s, it is historical, too, no matter how different it is from the rest of the films on this list. You must watch this one because it is more of a spy thriller. Based on the book of the same name by Uri Bar-Joseph, the film focuses on the story of an Egyptian man who served as a spy for Israeli intelligence. Set in the aftermath of the Six Days War, it shows the Egyptian Prime Minister and his cabinet talking about how they can get back at Israel after their recent loss. Ashraf Marwan, the son-in-law of the Prime Minister, is let in on the discussion. However, he is harshly rebuked when he makes a substantial suggestion. This throws him towards the Israeli intelligence, and the rest that happened was history! You can watch ‘The Angel’ here .

13. Outlaw King (2018)

biography movies on netflix

The name of Robert Bruce is held in high regard in Scottish history. He is known as one of the fiercest warriors and led the First War of Scottish Independence. ‘Outlaw King’ focuses on the events after the besieging of Stirling Castle, where the Scottish nobles surrendered to the King of England. Acting in subordination to the King continued for some time, but not long after, Robert Bruce led a rebellion against the British, motivated by sensing the unrest among the masses for the regime and the public display of William Wallace’s mutilated body. Chris Pine played the role of the titular king, while Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Florence Pugh, Billy Howle, and Tony Curran appeared in other important roles. Like any other Hollywood film, you can expect some historical inaccuracies. But you will get the overall gist of all the events that led him to become a leader and, eventually, the King of Scots. You may watch the film here .

12. Mudbound (2017)

biography movies on netflix

One of the year’s best films, ‘Mudbound,’ is set in the post-Second World War era. Two soldiers return home from the War, but all they were before is washed away by what they experienced. Jamie McAllan served as an army pilot, while Ronsel Jackson was in the infantry. Back home, Jamie’s elder brother, Henry, shares a loving marriage with Laura. Ronsel’s family, on the other hand, works in the McAllans’ fields. On returning home, Jamie and Ronsel strike a friendship, sharing their experiences of the War. However, the assimilation of blacks and whites wasn’t a common thing yet, not where they lived, and both of them faced trouble because of that. The film focuses on PTSD, which mainly haunts Jamie, and the racism that Ronsel has to bear witness to, something that he isn’t used to after becoming a part of the army. You may watch ‘Mudbound’ here .

11. The Red Sea Diving Resort (2019)

biography movies on netflix

A Netflix original film, ‘ The Red Sea Diving Resort ,’ is based on how Mossad (Israeli intelligence department) managed to smuggle Ethiopian Jews living in the country to Israel. Mossad agent Ari Levinson suggests to his seniors that they buy a beach resort and use it as a cover to carry out their covert mission. They carry out their mission in Sudan, but it is not long before some secrets are spilled, and the lives of the agents and the people they are protecting get shrouded in danger. The film had enough elements to make a compelling thriller, but writer-director Gideon Raff completely squanders away the opportunity by coming up with poorly written characters and not giving the actors enough material to work with. The film’s “white savior complex” has also been widely criticized. You can stream it here .

10. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny (2016)

biography movies on netflix

While ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny’ might not be a historical film in the truest sense of the term, it is a brilliant historical fiction that deserves our attention. The film is a sequel to the 2000 film ‘ Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon ,’ directed by Ang Lee . Michelle Yeoh reprises her role as warrior-maiden Shu Lien in this film. After being away for around eighteen years, she is eager to find the magical sword Green Destiny, which once belonged to her lover, Li Mu Bai. As a dangerous criminal called Hades Dai gets eager to claim the sword, Shu Lien is hell-bent on saving it. In her quest, she is joined by a young woman and a mysterious warrior called Silent Wolf. ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny’ is a wuxia film that tells us a lot about the medieval Chinese culture of martial arts. While we get to see some brilliantly choreographed action sequences, we are also made privy to the philosophy of the era. You can stream ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny’ here .

9. The King (2019)

biography movies on netflix

This Netflix original film is based on several plays by Shakespeare and mainly chronicles the early life of English ruler King Henry “Hal” V. The film begins with Hal being completely disinterested in the affairs of the state, and later when his brother Thomas passes away in a battle, he is suddenly made the King of England. Many people around him presumed that he was weak, and his coronation was openly mocked by King Charles VI of France. When Hal comes to know that Charles VI has sent an assassin to kill him, he declares war and marches on toward France to show his enemies his true powers. The boy who was always against politics and violence now gets molded into the image he always despised. Timothée Chalamet has established himself as a major talent, and this film again reminds us of his ability to do justice to any role he has been given. This film’s production design, costumes, and cinematography also deserve our admiration. You can watch it here .

8. First They Killed My Father (2017)

biography movies on netflix

The narrative is set in 1975 and follows a 7-year-old Loung as she is forced to become a child soldier during the Khmer Rouge regime. Loung is one of the seven children of her father, a Khmer National Armed Forces officer who is referred to in the film as “Pa.” After the Khmer Rouge emerges victorious in the Cambodian Civil War, Loung’s family leaves Phnom Pen as refugees and eventually ends up in a labor camp. Following her father’s death, Loung is recruited as a child soldier in a different camp just as the Vietnamese forces launch an operation to liberate Cambodia. You may watch the film here .

5. Society of the Snow (2024)

biography movies on netflix

This Spanish film showcases the tragedy that is the Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster. The flight crashed in the middle of the Andes Mountains on October 13, 1972, and only 14 out of the total 45 made it out alive after spending 72 days in a freezing, inaccessible, and hostile terrain made worse by cold, starvation, and avalanches. For days without any sign of rescue or help, the survivors resorted to cannibalism to keep themselves alive while using the front part of the plane, which had survived the crash, as their shelter. One of the worst disasters in human history and a miracle of the highest order, the Andes flight disaster/the Miracle of the Andes is a reminder of two things: the unforgiving nature of Nature and the strength of the human spirit. Directed by J. A. Bayona, ‘Society of the Snow’ can be streamed here .

But as the film progresses, and Paul becomes closely acquainted with the horrors of war, he realizes that glory is rarely found on the battlefield. The best he can hope for is to survive until the carnage around him stops. Remarque’s book also inspired the classic 1930 namesake film directed by Lewis Milestone. The villagers burdened by drought and taxes (Lagaan) from the British Government are challenged by an arrogant British officer to a cricket match to evade oppressive taxes. Produced amidst multiple challenges, the film was India’s priciest at its release time and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. 2. The Irishman (2019)

biography movies on netflix

Directed by the great Martin Scorsese, ‘The Irishman’ has some of the biggest stars in Hollywood, all of whom are among Scorsese’s go-to actors for his films. These include Robert De Niro , Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel. Adding to this stellar cast is Al Pacino . The film is based on the 2004 nonfiction book ‘I Heard You Paint Houses’ by Charles Brandt. It is set in Philadelphia during the 1950s and onwards and centers on war-veteran-turned-hitman Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, who worked under mobster Russell Bufalino of the Bufalino crime family and then for Jimmy Hoffa, the then-president of the labor union Teamsters (International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT)). A true-to-form portrayal of the politics and organized crime of the time in a way that is both open-world and intimate at the same time in signature Scorsese style, ‘The Irishman’ is, as they say, cinema. BioShock: everything we know about the Netflix adaptation

BioShock is headed to the small screen. Would you kindly stay tuned?

Bioshock Netflix

BioShock is the latest video game to get a live-action adaptation after Netflix confirmed that a film is currently in the works and that they'll be bringing the dystopian world of Rapture to life on screen.

The streaming service will be partnering with 2K and Take-Two on the project, which will join the likes of The Witcher , The Last of Us and Halo as the next gaming-inspired story to hit our screens.

In a statement, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said: "Netflix is among the best and most forward-thinking storytellers in all of entertainment today. We are thrilled that they share our vision and commitment to the BioShock franchise, which is beloved by millions of fans around the world."

He added: "2K’s Cloud Chamber studio is deep in active development on the next iteration of the series, and coupled with our partnership with Netflix, we remain highly confident that BioShock will continue to captivate and engage audiences like never before."

Here's everything we know about the BioShock film so far...

Would you kindly…get excited because Netflix is partnering with 2K and Take-Two Interactive to produce a film adaptation of the renowned video game franchise BIOSHOCK! pic.twitter.com/lUqfaNlbc4 February 15, 2022

BioShock release date

We may have to wait a while before BioShock arrives on Netflix, as so far we've had no confirmation of a release date. But we'll keep you updated as soon as we know!

Who is directing BioShock?

Film director Francis Lawrence

I Am Legend and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes director Francis Lawrence is at the helm of the BioShock movie and recently told Collider that he wants to keep the adaptation as close to the video games as possible.

He said: "Me and Cameron [MacConomy] who works with me, and Michael [Green] are getting to do what we want to do, which is great. A lot of it is staying really true to the game itself, and we're talking to Take-Two and Ken Levine."

In an interview with Games Radar, he said: "Oh, we have some new little bits in there, yes. I mean, the truth is it's game one, so we're being very true to a lot of it, right? So, we're not breaking canon in any way. But we do have some new little twists that will surprise fans, but that all fit in. We have a really good script, I'm really excited about it."

What is the plot?

Blade Runner 2049  writer Michael Green is writing the script, but right now we don't have exact plot details for the new adaptation. However, according to an interview with Collider, they already know how it's going to go down.

Director Francis Lawrence said: "Well, Michael Green, who wrote Blade Runner 2049, among other things, and who's been a friend of mine for years, he's writing it, and he's in the middle of writing it right now. We already have our take, outline, and all that kind of stuff, so that's all done. He's now just actually writing."

The first BioShock video game was released in 2007 and introduced players to a fictional, underwater city called Rapture, where they uncovered the dark secrets about how a city intended to be a safe haven became a hellish environment, constantly stalked by suited giants called Big Daddies.

A Big Daddy in BioShock

It is likely that it will focus on the events of the first game and take viewers on a journey through Rapture, and how citizens are encouraged to biologically modify their own bodies in order to survive.

There's a lot of philosophy attached to the game, and it has notably been inspired by the philosophy, architecture, and society featured in Ayn Rand's novels, so viewers should see some deeper themes explored too. We'll have to wait for confirmation!

In a press release, Netflix added: "The original  BioShock  is more than just a superb first-person shooter game. It’s also a sneakily compelling morality tale, told deep under the surface of the ocean in a creepy underwater city called Rapture.

In between blasting through hordes of Splicers, players are able to simply explore the rotting hallways and dilapidated storefronts of an entire mysterious world, meant as an Ayn Rand-inspired fantasyland for a mysterious historical figure. There’s more to discover than simple shotgun blasts — although those shotgun blasts are obviously more than satisfying. It’s no wonder the games have sold a combined 39 million copies worldwide. "

Who's in the cast?

Casting for the BioShock film has not been confirmed, as production on the film is still in the early stages. But when casting news comes in we will update this guide with everyone who'll be taking on the roles.

Is there a trailer?

No, it's too early for any trailers yet!

Music biopics have exploded in recent years, with the biggest of the bunch being Rocketman about Elton John and Bohemian Rhapsody documenting Queen. Netflix’s biggest swing in the genre has been their 2019 movie The Dirt , looking into the history of Motley Crue.

This biopic (expected to release in 2024) will focus on Gene and Paul, the two kids from Queens who formed KISS and a life-long friendship after enlisting guitarist Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss.

White Mountains

Still yet to be confirmed by Netflix itself is White Mountains, a new production from Higher Ground Productions (the production company founded and helmed by Barack and Michelle Obama).

Netflix picked up the script after it featured on The Blacklist with the movie retelling the story of Barney and Betty Hill who claim they were abducted by a UFO in the 1960s.

Rounding out the preview, here are a few more announced projects in the past, but we’ve had little to no information since:

  • Janet – From Janet Mock, this feature film was announced back in 2020 and would tell the story of a young black woman at the Washington Post and her ambitious and complicated quest to make the front page.
  • Tenzing – A feature film from Higher Ground Productions based on the life of Tenzing Norgay, the first man to reach the summit of Mt. Everest.
  • The Ice Bucket Challenge – Produced by Casey Affleck, this biopic would’ve looked into the activist behind the viral sensation.

The True Story Behind the Surprise Netflix Hit Baby Reindeer

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Netflix series Baby Reindeer .

In his one-man play-turned-hit Netflix series Baby Reindeer , Scottish comedian Richard Gadd recounts the harrowing true story of how his experience with being stalked forced him to confront a buried trauma.

Playing a fictionalized version of himself named Donny Dunn, Gadd unpacks the years-long stalking and harassment campaign he endured at the hands of a middle-aged woman he refers to by the pseudonym Martha (played with a chilling intensity by Jessica Gunning) while struggling to make it as a stand-up and writer in London. As is depicted in the show, the stalking began in the wake of Gadd being groomed, repeatedly sexually assaulted, and raped by an older male TV industry mentor (named Darrien in the show and played by Tom Goodman-Hill)—an ordeal that left him reeling emotionally, questioning his sexuality, and wrestling with extreme self-loathing. Still, Gadd doesn't shy away from his own complicity in what transpired with Martha, frequently painting himself in a negative light as the story unfolds over the course of seven episodes.

“It would be unfair to say she was an awful person and I was a victim. That didn’t feel true,” he told The Guardian in 2019 following the sold-out inaugural run of the Baby Reindeer play. "I did loads of things wrong and made the situation worse. I wasn’t a perfect person [back then], so there’s no point saying I was."

When Gadd debuted his one-man show at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, it had been two years since he had seen or heard from Martha. Three years earlier, while the stalking was still in full swing, he had won the festival's top prize for his comedy show Monkey See, Monkey Do , which explored his experience as a survivor of sexual violence. The Baby Reindeer Netflix series, which is currently at number two on the streamer's most-watched charts following its release last week, is an amalgam of the two stage shows.

"It felt like a risky thing—to do a 'warts and all' version of the story where I held my hands up to the mistakes I had made with Martha," Gadd wrote in a piece that accompanied the show's debut . "The foolish flirting. The cowardly excuses as to why we could not be together. Not to mention the themes of internalized prejudice and sexual shame that underpinned it all. The graphic details of the drugging and grooming and sexual violence I had experienced only a few years before...But equally I could not shy away from the truth of what had happened to me. This was a messy, complicated situation. But one that needed to be told, regardless."

Here's what to know about the true story behind Baby Reindeer .

What happened with Martha?

Jessica Gunning as Martha in Baby Reindeer

Similar to how the show begins, Gadd has said that the stalking started after he gave Martha a free cup of tea when she came into the London pub where he was working in 2015. “At first everyone at the pub thought it was funny that I had an admirer,” he told The Times . "Then she started to invade my life, following me, turning up at my gigs, waiting outside my house, sending thousands of voicemails and emails."

Over the next four and a half years, Gadd recounts that Martha sent him 41,071 emails, 350 hours' worth of voicemails, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook messages, 106 pages of letters, and a variety of strange gifts. Every email that appears in the Netflix series is a message that Gaad received in real life. She also harassed a number of people who were close to Gaad, including his parents and a trans woman (named Teri in the show and played by Nava Mau) whom he had begun dating shortly before the stalking began.

When Gadd tried to go to the police, he discovered that the laws surrounding harassment and abuse are, in his own words, "so stupid." Despite the fact that the show presents Martha as having been previously convicted on similar charges, Gadd was told he needed concrete evidence of direct threats for authorities to take any action.

"They look for black and white, good and evil, and that’s not how it works," he told The Independent . "You can really affect someone’s life within the parameters of legality, and that is sort of mad."

How do things stand today?

Richard Gaad as Donny Dunn in Baby Reindeer

In the show, Martha ultimately receives a nine-month prison sentence and five-year restraining order for stalking Donny. In real life, Gaad has never disclosed the details of how the situation was resolved beyond the fact that he had "mixed feelings" about it.

"I can’t emphasize enough how much of a victim she is in all this," he told The Independent . "Stalking and harassment is a form of mental illness. It would have been wrong to paint her as a monster, because she’s unwell, and the system’s failed her."

As for how Gaad's sexual assault has continued to impact his life, the finale culminates in a closing sequence in which Donny shows up at Darrien's home to confront him only to accept an offer to work on his new show instead. A distressed Donny then finds himself at a bar where he is offered a drink on the house in a moment that flips his first interaction with Martha on its head.

"I think that was almost the most truthful scene of the entire show. What abuse does is it creates psychological damage as well as physical damage," Gadd told GQ . "There’s a pattern where a lot of people who have been abused feel like they need their abusers. I don’t think it was a cynical ending, it was showing an element of abuse that hadn’t been seen on television before, which is, unfortunately, the deeply entrenched, negative, psychological effects of attachment you can sometimes have with your abuser."

‘Baby Reindeer’: What Happened to Richard Gadd's Stalker and Abuser?

The acclaimed Netflix show is based on a series of horrifying real-life ordeals

preview for Baby Reindeer: Official Trailer (Netflix)

Spoilers for Baby Reindeer ahead

Baby Reindeer might just be one of the most brilliant yet devastating things you’ll see on TV all year.

What makes it even more affecting is that it’s a true story, based on the life of the comedian Richard Gadd. Much like Michaela Coel in I May Destroy You , Gadd plays himself, reenacting and reliving his own real-life sexual assault, and the depths of PTSD that follow. While Gadd plays a fictional version of himself, a mid-Fringe comedian called Donny Dunn, and he renames his real-life stalker, most of what viewers see on screen happened to Gadd in real life.

The show provides a somewhat ambiguous ending. But what happened in reality to his stalker, represented in the show by the character Martha Scott (played by Jessica Gunning) and his industry abuser, the so-called Darrien (played by Tom Goodman-Hill)?

The backstory

In the series, Gadd details how a chance encounter with a crying woman at the pub he worked in led to a years-long obsession and campaign of stalking and harassment.

Over a three-year period from 2015, she sent him more than 40,000 emails and 350 hours worth of voicemails. She also turned up repeatedly to his work, when he was on stage in comedy clubs and also harassed his parents, falsely telling police that Gadd’s dad was a paedophile.

The police dismissed Gadd’s ordeal with his stalker – as happened in real life, as he told The Guardian in 2019 during the original theatre show of Baby Reindeer : “I was getting told off for harassing the police about being harassed… I’ve been through two police investigations in my life and they’ve both been hilarious, fly-on-the-wall terrible. Honestly my advice to someone who ever thought of pressing charges would be: it’s a fucking nightmare process, and it takes years.”

In the show, Martha eventually gets arrested and ends up in court for leaving a threatening voicemail on Donny’s phone. She is charged with three counts of stalking and harassment, of which she pleads guilty, and receives nine months in prison and a five-year restraining order.

Gadd, however, is at pains to point out that his stalker isn’t an evil monster, but a vulnerable person with extreme mental health issues. Speaking with The Independent in 2019, he said: “I can’t emphasise enough how much of a victim she is in all this. When we think of stalkers, we always think of films like Misery and Fatal Attraction , where the stalker is a monstrous figure in the night down an alleyway. But usually, it’s a prior relationship or someone you know or a work colleague. Stalking and harassment is a form of mental illness. It would have been wrong to paint her as a monster, because she’s unwell, and the system’s failed her.”

In reality, he hasn’t revealed the fate of his own stalker – other than he managed to get a restraining order out against her – and, according to an interview with The Times , “It is resolved. I had mixed feelings about it — I didn’t want to throw someone who was that level of mentally unwell in prison.”

Perhaps the most shocking incident in the series doesn’t feature Martha the stalker though, and instead happens in episode four, where Donny is groomed, loaded with mind-altering drugs and then raped by an older male TV industry mentor.

This also happened to Gadd in real life, and he previously attempted to process the sexual violation through another theatre show, improbably a comedy, Monkey See Monkey Do , which won the Edinburgh Comedy award in 2016.

In 2012, as he described in the theatre show, he met a man at a party who drugged and then sexually attacked him. In the series, Darrien – a writer on the fictional show Cotton Mouth – draws him in by offering him industry contacts, and says he’ll help him get his own TV show commissioned. The pair meet frequently at Darrien’s flat, where he plies Donny with harder and harder drugs, including GHB and acid, and in a graphic scene, rapes him.

In the series, Donny eventually goes back, seemingly to confront Darrien, but when Darrien acts like nothing’s wrong – he makes him a cup of tea and offers him a writing position on his TV show – Donny leaves, without saying anything.

It’s unknown what happened to Gadd’s real abuser. But in an interview with The Guardian he said that he worked to channel his experiences into his creative theatre and TV show: “Keeping this in was really hard. And I knew the only way I’d be free of it is if I start to tell people. I don’t think anyone knows how bad it is until it happens. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, I think.”

Commenting on Instagram on the release of Baby Reindeer – which charted at number one on Netflix’s most watched in the UK and US – Gadd added: “‘I am okay, for those asking. I promise.”
